Vladimir Jurowski & London philharmonic orchestra

Principal conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Vladimir Jurowski, brings the music of his home country together with the music of Britain in three powerful concerts. Resident at Southbank Centre, the London Philharmonic Orchestra are joined by the Russian National Orchestra in performing Russian and British symphonies that evoke the triumph of the human spirit in times of war.

Vladimir Jurowski conductor Laurence Power viola Britten Sinfonia da Requiem Walton Viola Concerto Prokofiev War and Peace excerpts Britten’s Sinfonia da Requiem is a dramatic, menacing work written during the Second World War. It ends with a soaring, romantic movement bursting with a sense of poignant regret. Prokofiev’s morale-boosting opera based on Tolstoy’s War and Peace is a probing exploration of rejuvenation through love. An immense evening for orchestra lovers – this is the first opportunity to hear these two orchestras combine forces. Opening the concert is the blazing triumph of Tchaikovsky’s portrait of human victory, followed by a solemn, mournful lamentation for strings from the pen of Benjamin Britten. The relentless crescendo of Shostakovich’s Seventh Symphony paints a musical picture of Leningrad under siege between 1941 and 1943. Presiding over this evening’s intoxicating entertainment are singer Dagmar Manzel and narrator Robert Gallinowski. They weave cabaret songs by composers such as Weill, Erman, Heymann, Schoenberg and Hindemith around ironic observations, political interjections and menacing bohemian wit. Schoenberg for orchestra Famed for their refined sound, the Vienna Philharmonic explore the relationship between Schoenberg – one of the 20th century’s greatest artistic radicals – and his musical hero Brahms, the arch German Romantic. Schoenberg’s Theme and Variations is a late testament to his love of 19th century music. Brahms’ glorious Piano Concerto No.2, symphonic in scale and ambition, is juxtaposed with his early Piano Quartet No.1 in an opulent orchestral arrangement by Schoenberg.
