ow time flies – the second season in the Schiller Theater has come to an end and what a successful season it was too. Janácek’s Aus einem Totenhaus, Smetana’s Die verkaufte Braut, Offenbach’s Orpheus, Händel’s Il trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno and Nono’s Al gran sole carico d’amore! Also, at the Werkstatt studio with many modern pieces, there are still more premieres to come: Manfred Stahnke’s Wahnsinn das ist die Seele der Handlung, works by Hindemith and Shostakovich – names like these go to prove how broad the range of our musical programme is, brought to you by the admirable Staatskapelle orchestra and the splendid Staatsopernchor (opera choir). And you, dear audience, flocked to our performances in droves. However there is still more waiting to enthral you. Alban Berg’s Lulu with Daniel Barenboim and Andrea Breth will have its premiere soon, as will Emilio de’ Cavalieri’s Rappresentatione di Anima et di Corpo, conducted by René Jacobs and staged by Achim Freyer. And on the occasion of Wolfgang Rihm’s 60th birthday we will perform his Dionysos at the end of the season during the INFEKTION! Festival. So what’s in store for the new season? Find out by reading this booklet, in which we whet your appetite with news of our great projects for the Wagner year – Siegfried, Götterdämmerung, Der fliegende Holländer – and during our Easter FESTTAGE festival, the Ring cycle together with full cast and instrumentation, as well as Daniel Barenboim, the outstanding Wagner conductor of our time, on the rostrum. Mozart’s La finta giardiniera will be staged by Hans Neuenfels, with the support of Christopher Moulds, a very successful young conductor, and after this will be Le vin herbé, staged by Katie Mitchell and conducted by Franck Ollu. Swiss composer Frank Martin wrote this work in 1938 as a version on the Tristan und Isolde theme. Our INFEKTION! Festival for Modern Musical Theatre features Purcell’s The Fairy Queen adapted by Helmut Oehring and staged by Claus Guth, with Michael Boder conducting. Hot on its heels comes Hanjo by Toshio Hosokawa. Our diverse repertoire will also include new operas for children and young people and of course we mustn’t forget to mention our Staatsballett with their premiere of Boris Eifman’s Tschaikowsky – Das Mysterium von Leben und Tod and Onegin, Caravaggio and more. Or the successful concerts of the Staatskapelle in the Philharmonie, the Konzerthaus building, in the Bode-Museum and in Berlin’s Rotes Rathaus. We are delighted to greet our new colleagues at the Deutsche Oper and the Komische Oper, managers Dietmar Schwarz and Barrie Kosky. We wish them much success in their work and are looking forward to working side by side with them. But most of all dear audience and friends we are particularly looking forward to seeing you; to hearing your applause and, it goes without saying, to noting your criticism too! See you soon in the Schiller Theater!

»I thought that everyone played the piano.«

Daniel Barenboim turns 70. For more than six decades he has been at home on concert stages and in opera houses all over the world, as a pianist as well as a conductor. Artistic director Jürgen Flimm talks with »his« general musical director on his childhood and youth, on experience having moulded his character, on music and of course also on the upcoming anniversary.

What would you play? DANIEL BARENBOIM: Well, probably one of

Mozart’s works. You know, I asked the American composer Elliott Carter in New York a similar question on his 100th birthday. After the concert a small reception was held at Carnegie Hall, and I asked him: »Elliott, how did you spend your birthday?« After all, I was very much interested to know what a 100 year old person does. »I stayed in bed a bit longer«, he said. I went on joking: »Well, you have grown a bit old by now, haven’t you?« And he answered: »No, not at all. I never get up before knowing exactly what I want to write. And I had such a wealth of ideas in my head this morning. This is why I stayed in bed longer. I got up at 11 o’clock, had coffee and sat down to start composing.« This is the best birthday story I can tell you. JÜRGEN FLIMM: Really a great story. And when

festtage cycle

The performance of the entire cycle of Wagner’s Ring des Nibelungen marked the start of the FESTTAGE festival of Staatsoper Unter den Linden under Daniel Barenboim in 1996. 17 years later it is again this singular tetralogy which takes centre stage in the festival. With a cast of international stars, Staatskapelle Berlin and, of course, Daniel Barenboim as the stimulating and inspiring musical director, four outstanding opera evenings are in store.
