Commodore’s Message I hope everyone had a great Easter and enjoyed our inaugural Hong Kong to Puerto Galera Yacht Race – either making your own safe passage or via ‘armchair sailing’ with the YellowBrick tracker. With a distance of 650nm, the race is now Asia’s second longest offshore race behind the Hong Kong to Vietnam Race which stands at 673nm – also by Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club. My congratulations go to everyone who participated in the Hong Kong to Puerto Galera Yacht Race, especially those boats which won their divisions.

The Bridge

If offshore sailing is not really your cup of tea, you might well have sailed in our Tomes Cup, the finale of the Old Mutual Top Dog Trophy Series, the HKRNVR Memorial Vase or the Nations’ Cup – the latter for the photo opportunities of your dressed up team and the honour of having your nation’s flag behind our Main Bar. Here we are! The last month of what has been another successful sailing and rowing season for the Club despite the setback we suffered from Typhoon Mangkhut last September.

Commodore John Woo

會長胡祖榮

Early this month we have the Luxury Lodges of New Zealand Ladies Helm on 4 May, an event that we very much hope to see grow to its fullest potential. The following weekend we would like to welcome everyone to the Club for the Spring Regatta taking place on 11 and 12 May. Whilst the Spring Regatta marks the formal end to the sailing season, the on the water action will continue through the summer with the St. James’s Place Sunset Series which will in fact start earlier than usual (on Friday 31 May), as the following week is a public holiday. We also of course have the school summer holiday sail training courses at Middle Island from 17 June until the end of August. The major event for the rowing and paddle sport section in May is the Deep Water Bay Regatta dragon boat race on 19 May. This event is a highlight of a busy dragon boat season and provides the opportunity for our Club team to beat the Victoria Recreation Club in their own back yard! I would like to wish the Club team the best of luck in the competition. For the rowers, the Middle Island Youth Rowing Series will culminate with their final race at Middle Island on 25 May.

Luxury Lodges of New Zealand

Commodore John Woo was on hand to accept the awards on behalf of the Club. Thank you to all of our members, staff and volunteers and to everyone who has taken part in our races and regattas, particularly of course China Coast Race Week! Achieving these awards is testament to the hard work of everyone involved and their commitment to developing our core sports for the benefit of Hong Kong and to ensuring that the Club fulfills its vision of being a premier international yachting and rowing club of which our members can be proud.

General Manager’s Message

The Bridge

For many years now our tradition has been that the very first of May is always Middle Island Big Day Out. It is a celebration of everything we are as a sporting Club committed to developing our core sports in a fun and family friendly way. Members, together with your families and friends get to try out the latest boats for sailing, rowing and paddling, as well as enjoying what F&B has on offer with some competition, fun, games and other activities thrown in for good measure. By the time you are reading this, the day will be well under way, so I hope you managed to get your registration in on time! Please see page 33. On 2 May we welcome Bernard Hooley and Steven Paul, owners of Oadkene Estate, a boutique vineyard located in Wallingon on the Bellarine Peninsula, situated south-west of Melbourne in Victoria, Australia. A fairly young vineyard having only been established in 2001, they are already producing excellent results and winning a myriad awards at major wine shows. This is a winery to watch for the future, so be sure to be one of the first in Hong Kong to give their wines a try.

The following week, our popular Michelin Chef Series continues with the arrival of our first ever three star Michelin Chef to take up residence in the Compass Room. Chef Heinz Beck is one of Europe’s most respected and award winning Chefs and his restaurant in Rome, La Pergola, is the only restaurant in Rome to carry the highly coveted 3 Michelin stars. Chef Beck and his team will be in the Compass Room for lunch and dinner for three days, 9 to 11 May, including a special Italian Wine Dinner being held on Thursday 9 May. Be sure to book up and don’t miss out on what will undoubtedly be a truly special experience. It’s all go on the wine front with too with yet another wine dinner – this time it’s the turn of New Zealand’s Misha’s Vineyard in Central Otago to come and share with you what makes their wines so special. Misha herself will be her along with her husband and co-owner, Andy Wilkinson. Misha’s Vineyard Wines is committed to best practices in all levels of vineyard management and wine production. The vineyard is fully certified “Sustainable” under the New Zealand Winegrowers certification programme and Misha and her husband are committed to ensuring that as well as making fabulous wines, they are responsible stewards of their land and protect it for future generations. And no, that isn’t all; there is yet another wine dinner on 23 May and this one from yet another continent! Located in Stellenbosch, Spier is one of South Africa’s oldest wine farms with a recorded history dating back to 1692 and we welcome Spier Wine Farm’s Winemaker, Johan Jordaan to the Compass Room on Thursday 23 May. More details about these fantastic events can be found on pages 37. The new Sports Bar and Bowling Alley is proving to be extremely popular. We’ve also now introduced weekly tournaments. As long as we have ten registrations each time, the tournament is on and you’re in with a chance to win a prize, and the bragging rights for the following month! On Tuesdays its darts, on Wednesdays its Pool and on Thursday its Foosball. Come down and test your skills! It’s time for Mother’s Day again. Whilst we all know that we should always find time to celebrate and appreciate our mums, this is the big official day in Hong Kong! Mark your calendars for Sunday 12 May and book up to celebrate with your mum in the Compass room with a special set lunch (and cake workshop for the children!), or alternatively enjoy a special buffet menu at either the Bistro or at Middle Island. It’s always a popular event so don’t miss out, please book early! See page 36. And bang in the middle of the month is our second Pop Music Karaoke Quiz Night! The first one held in March was absolutely brilliant fun so we didn’t want to make you wait too long for a second one. Form teams of six to 12 and I promise you’ll have a fantastic night out. Details on page 38. On Sundays during May we now offer you an alternative venue for your Sunday Roast. Join us on the Main Deck where for only $198 you can enjoy a selection of Roast Meat, Yorkshire Pudding, Roast Potatoes, Vegetables and Gravy. What a superb way to spend your lazy Sunday. So, there is a lot to do this month without forgetting of course to get your entries in for the Luxury Lodges of New Zealand Ladies Helm Day on 4 May and the end of season, Spring Regatta on the weekend of 11 and 12 May. I look forward to seeing you at the Club.

In what has become one of the most hotly – contested team racing events in Hong Kong, the 17th annual Boase Cohen & Collins Inter-School Sailing Festival was held on the weekend of 10 and 11 March 2019. Competing in this year’s event were 155 students in 22 teams from 17 educational institutions across Hong Kong.

ace Officer, Elberti Uiterwaal and her team of some 30 volunteers had their work cut out, getting through a grueling schedule of 100 races over the weekend. The race course was situated right in front of Middle Island, in the waters between the Clubhouse and the Deep Water Bay Seaview Promenade – a perfect location, offering the opportunity for club members, the general public, parents and students alike to witness a great display of tactical racing. In what was predicted to be strong monsoon conditions for Day 1, the Race Committee and competitors were greeted by 10 to 12 knots on Saturday morning, however the breeze quickly dissipated. The wind fluctuated throughout the day from 0 to 5kts. Even with the challenging conditions, 46 out of the 50 races scheduled for the day were sailed. Adding to the atmosphere of the weekend was the lively play by play race commentary provided by Jamie Boag, Team Director of Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing, winners of the 20142015 Volvo Ocean Race and resident event DJ, Kevin Lewis.

On Sunday, the conditions proved even more challenging with very little breeze and heavy intermittent showers. The day started with sailors racing the final four races of the qualifiers. The dying breeze kept the organizers on their toes as they juggled multiple scenarios in the scheduling in order to get finals racing underway. In the end, despite the flailing conditions, RO Elberti Uiterwaal and her team shone through with a race schedule adapted to go straight into Finals, eight races being run to determine the Boase Cohen & Collins Interschool 2019 top team in Divisions A and B. With much encouragement and energised barracking from the 150 strong crowd of fellow students, the strongly contested finals saw the top 4 teams in each division pitted against each other to determine the overall winners. The closest racing of the weekend ultimately saw the French International School being crowned Champion of Division A (Feva) and Hong Kong Schools Sailing Association Champion of Division B (Pico/Fusion). Hong Kong Schools Sailing Association Champion team member Matthew Cheng was jubilant in reflecting on the weekends racing saying, “The biggest challenge of the weekend was the light conditions and overall the other teams were not that heavy (weight wise) so they had an advantage in the light conditions. We overcame the conditions with our good teamwork and we all called out to each other when we were in trouble, so we helped each other on the way around the track. Great team spirit!” Prizes were presented on the hardstand by the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club Vice Commodore Denis Martinet and Senior Partner of Boase Cohen & Collins, Colin Cohen with a brave crowd enduring yet another torrential downpour mid prizegiving.

aiden is currently en route to Fremantle, Australia, where she will make her first stop on her Australian leg of the world tour. Sydney will be the second stop before Maiden is due to arrive in Auckland, New Zealand in early May. Taking advantage of the NZ marine industry facilities, Maiden will undergo maintenance and a new paint job, before setting sail, bound unfortunately not for our shores, but towards America. Since Maiden’s HK stopover was first announced in January’s Ahoy! the schedule and route for the world tour has changed. Part of the reason for the route change was the very real appreciation of the Asian typhoon season. After deliberating with Maiden’s crew, partners and stopover port hosts, it was agreed to sail north east instead of north west in June when Maiden departs New Zealand. First stop Hawaii, where Maiden will be introducing herself to the American public as she makes her headlining sailing tour around America. Maiden can be expected to be gracing Hong Kong harbour in late 2020|early 2021.

Maiden’s legendary skipper, Tracy Edwards MBE, is however expected to be in HK early May (Saturday, 4 May – Friday 10 May), with Kels (our ex Sailing Manager), and Alexandra Roberts, Tracy’s Event Manager. Tracy is keen to meet as many members as possible during her short stint in Hong Kong. Tracy will host a Q&A evening with members discussing all things Maiden: past, present and future! Keep an eye on the Club’s weekly email for more information. Tracy and the Maiden team are actively looking for stopover partners to minimise costs during their World Tour stopover. Valued partner assistance ensures as much of the monies raised at events goes directly to the partner charities the Maiden Factor Foundation supports. If you are interested in partnering with The Maiden Factor for her 2020-2021 Hong Kong stopover, please contact Alex Roberts. alexandra@themaidenfactor.org More information on the tour can be found on the Maiden website: www.themaidenfactor.org Facebook: The Maiden Factor

The ever popular summer St. James’s Place Sunset Series will kick off one week early on Friday 31 May due to Friday 7 June being a public holiday. 12 races are scheduled throughout the summer months. The series is open to all and is a good excuse to start the weekend early by sailing with friends in a fun and relaxed event followed by prizegiving on the main lawn. The series is a tactical challenge on when to bag a race to improve your boat’s handicap. The race track is in front of the Club which makes it a great experience for spectators if you don’t wish to sail – Warning signal is at 1740hrs – see you on 31 May for the first race.

Spring Regatta

Sunshine Series

The final regatta for the 2018-2019 season takes place in Victoria Harbour on 11 and 12 May. This two day regatta includes all Class boats and Big boats and offers challenging sailing conditions as the weather starts to adapt to the summer patterns. We look forward to seeing you at Kellett Island over the weekend.

The Sunshine Series is a great opportunity to sail in the harbour to train up new crew before the start of the season in September. Skippers wishing to sign up new crew or sailors wanting to find boats please contact the Sailing Office and we’ll try our best to put you in contact with each other.

The Finish CB

s per the RRS Definitions, “a boat is racing from her preparatory signal until she finishes and clears the finishing line and marks or retires, or until the race committee signals a general recall, postponement or abandonment”. And “a boat finishes when any part her hull, or crew or equipment in normal position, crosses the finishing line from the course side.” This is the moment that determines the boat’s finish time or position. The boat does not need to sail completely across the line – once she has broken the line, she can then dip down and sail away below the line. It could be considered prudent though to sail all the way across the line to avoid a potential DNF score just in case your boat’s leading edge hadn’t quite broken the line. Your boat is clear when no part of your hull, crew or equipment is on the FINISH line and no mark is influencing your choice of course.

And, fairly obviously, if the start/finish line has to CBat the end of each lap, you have FINISH CB be crossed not finished until you cross and clear the line after the required number of laps.

For some CB START races, the pole flying the blue flag also defines one end of CB the finishing line. This is used when the starting line is on one side of the signal boat and the finishing line is on the other side, and allows the race committee to start and finish races simultaneously without the potential CB confusion that having two orange flags on either side of the committee boat might cause. For club racing, a buoy will usually form the other end These boats have both finished and cleared the line – they are no longer racing. of the finishing line. This month, we’re focusing on finishing – what the rules say, race committee actions at the finish line, finishing scores and also a variety of scenarios which you may encounter when finishing club races. As for all aspects of racing, the first place to look for information on finishing is the Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS). Every racing sailor should have a copy close to hand and be familiar with its contents…

START

CB Blue flag = RC boat in position at the finishing line.

Pole with orange flag = starboard end of starting line.

Pole with blue flag = starboard end of finishing line. The RC can simultaneously start and finish races from the same committee boat.

For class races in Victoria Harbour, the club line may be used instead of a committee boat for starting and finishing races. In this case, the finishing (and starting) line is between the white pole with the yellow triangle on the starter’s box on the northern shore of Kellett Island and the mark laid to the north as an outer distance mark. An inner distance PORT ROUNDING MARK RK mark may also be laid to prevent boats from getting too close to the foreshore, and to finish boats have to sail between the outer and inner distance marks from the direction of the last mark of theCB course. Please CB DIRECTION FROM PREVIOUS MASK DIRECTION FROM PREVIOUS MASK note that the inner distance mark may not be exactly on the starting line – the line remains between the white pole and the outer distance mark. Finishing team tasks The finishing line flag(s) should be displayed as the lead boat starts the last leg of the course, and removed when the finish time limit has expired. No sound signals are made when the flags are displayed and removed. As the lead boat in each class finishes, a sound signal should be made – this lets the other sailors know that the countdown to the finish PORT ROUNDING MARKtime PORT ROUNDING MARK limit has started. Subsequent boats in the class do not have to be given a sound signal – this protects the finish team’s hearing and also makes CB personDIRECTION it easier for the calling the finishes to MASK be heard by the recording FROM PREVIOUS DIRECTION FROM PREVIOUS MASK team. If the lead boat had not started properly (e.g. OCS, UFD, BFD), do not give it a sound signal as its finish will not trigger the start of the finish window.

A question CB often heard by the race committee at the finish line is “Have I finished?” This is not for the race committee to answer – how can they be instantly expected to know if a specific boat has sailed the course correctly? If they answer “yes” and later the boat is protested for missing a mark or not sailing the required number of laps, the crew will feel aggrieved. The “Have I finished?” question is best answered by their fellow crewmates as (hopefully) they should know which course they are sailing and how many laps they have completed! Scoring the finish RRS Appendix A is normally used for scoring races with 1 point awarded for finishing first, 2 points for second and so on, either based on elapsed time (one-design racing) or corrected time (mixed fleet racing). There are a variety of scoring codes which are used for other results and there can be confusion over some of the more common codes – DNC / DNS / DNF / RET. DNC is used when a boat did not start and did not come to the starting area. This is different from DNS which is used when a boat was seen in the starting area but did not actually start the race or started outside the starting time limit (usually 10 minutes for club races). DNF is used when a boat does not finish a race – perhaps they are outside the finish time limit or have gear failure and were not able to continue in the race. RET means that a boat retires from a race, which can be done either before or after finishing. Perhaps they realize after CB finishing other FINISH that they have sailed the wrong course or made some FINISH error which they did not correct before finishing. Or perhaps they were involved in a boat on boat incident and wish to retire from the race. And most club sailors are familiar with the OCS score which is used for a boat which was on course side at her start and does not return to start correctly (or does not go around an end of the starting line if the I Flag was in effect). In a regatta, these codes all confer scores which are equal to ‘the number of boats entered in the regatta + 1’. However, for a series of races held over a longer period of time than a specific regatta, a DNC score carries points equal to ‘the number of boats entered in the series + 1’ which is most likely going to be a larger score than a DNS, OCS, DNF or RET score for a race (‘the number ofFINISH boats that came to the CBincentive for boats to take part in START starting area + 1’). This provides an all the races in the series. The race committee cannot score a boat DSQ if they miss or hit a mark or is involved in a boat on boat incident. Ideally the other competitors should follow this up via the protest process. However, if the race committee was the only witness to an infringement, they can talk to the sailor and see if they wish to retire and if not, submit a protest.

Shortened course finish The finish team should have one person calling the line and two people Once a race is underway, the race committee can shorten recording the finishes. For class racing, the time that the first and last it by reducing the number of legs to be sailed for a variety boats finish should be recorded, as the former starts the finish window of reasons (e.g. bad weather, failing wind, problems with a clock running and the latter may be used to calculate the protest time mark, or to enable other races to be sailed). The shortened course limit. For handicap racing, all finish times should be recorded as this signal should be seen and heard as early as possible to give boats time information will be needed to calculate the results. The line caller should PORT and opportunity ROUNDING MARKto respond. Record the time when OCS boats leaving the rounding mark on the side specified in the course. This cross the line – they may be given redress later and so their finish will reduces the element of surprise that a shortened course could present.

Dragon Sail Boats Community Outreach Event in Port Shelter W O RD S: C A RL KRO KSTÄ D E | PH OTO S: K ATIE KRO KSTÄ D E

Sailing Above: Dragon sailors in the making; Below: D46 heading back, with a scout at the mast

ecently the Shelter Cove Sub-Committee took out a group of scouts on eight Dragon sailboats. Johan Anker’s (close to a century old original handsome design) of a two berthed fjord cruiser has evolved to, a still very handsome, but fullon racing class. Now the boat is fitted out with an incredible amount of

fine adjustment ropes, laid out like a church organ panel for the happy cockpit crew to play with. But luckily the event for our guests was to give them a taste of sailing and a flavour of racing, with VHF usage, sailing instructions and all – and not to learn how to play a church organ! The theory part started off with Joe Leung giving his enthusiastic talk on the theory of sailing followed by how it is to sail a Dragon and closing with an introduction to navigation. Shelter Cove’s master chefs cooked up a storm for the sailors and while the scouts, soon to be upgraded to “Dragon sailing scouts” had their fine lunches, I briefed the skippers. The briefing included the does and don’ts, and underscoring that it was just an informal non-race-race. I could see the sailors’ racing glow in some of the skippers and yes, the Dragon sailors are a competitive group. We had two courses planned, Pak Ma Tsui to Kau Sai Wan and back, or the preferred Around the Shelter Island. The wind was pretty good out of Hebe Haven and none of the eight Dragons needed a tow. Awaiting at the start line on the de facto committee boat however it was soon dead calm and a delay was relayed via VHF. When Njord (the god of the sea and winds in Norse mythology) witnessed the handsome Dragon fleet appearing outside of HKUST he

got inspiration enough to figure out how the remote worked for the giant fan in the sky. When the wind came in, with just half an hour delayed start, the plan changed from teaching the youngsters how to paddle a Dragon sailboat into moving with the wind we just got blessed with. So we were very pleased to be able to sail around Shelter Island with its beautiful rock formations and cliffs. It always feels like an accomplishment to round an island when sailing. Going from a wind speed of force almost nothing to a healthy and steady C north western of force 4 to 5 and the same time going from bored sailors M to broad smiles all around, is a sight even a landlubber must appreciate. Y

Even with a non-race-race on the agenda, I must say that the Dragon CM sailors still sailed pretty competitively; more into full race mode it was! MY

It was a fast reach with Shelter Island to starboard and a spinnaker run CY back behind the very same island. CMY

Even with the imaginary AP flag up for a good half hour, 75% of the K dragons made the finish line before the still original, non-extended, race cut of time. The next race was to get the scouts back to debriefing and their awaiting transportation, the one who did it coolest was the lady who helmed a Dragon with spinnaker through the crowded inner harbour. The scouts were more than happy to enjoy a day of sailing on Dragons while putting theory into practice. I wish to thank Lena Chi, Joe Leung and the Dragon sailing boat community for their help with boats, crew, presentations and a fun day out. Dragons participating was D1, D8, D12, D37, D41, D46, D54 and D59. MAY 2019 AHOY! |

The BuyAssociation Harbour Regatta A Regatta that rejuvenates Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour W O RD S: JA NICE L A M A ND NI CK C R A BB | PH OTO S: PH O EBE L EUN G

rganised by Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club and co-organised by Hong Kong, China Rowing Association and made possible by the sponsorship of BuyAssociation, the 3rd Harbour Regatta was successfully held on Sunday 17 March, at Hong Kong’s iconic Victoria Harbour. Approximately 180 rowers representing various local universities, secondary schools and community clubs gathered at the Harbour and raced in the city. The rowers rejuvenated the Harbour by injecting new energy into the busy waters of Hong Kong. The race was divided into two main categories; Coastal Double and Coastal Quad with coxswain. These were then subdivided into Open, Women, Junior and Master classes. The 630m course, comprising two laps, was situated at the stretch of open water between Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club in Causeway Bay and the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. All 40 races were sprint races in a knock-out format, with two to four rowing crews taking part in each heat. The winning crew progressed to the next round of the event until the Champion was crowned. The Club had a strong representation at the Regatta, winning three of the nine events. Mark

Hughes and Andrew Russell won the Masters B Open 2x in a close final against fellow Club members Matthew Torlesse and Stephen Pang. The Club’s Open 4x of Chris Knollman, Andrew McCabe, Wan Ng Steve Coats coxed by Cheung Kam Kiu connected several good performances to win their category, with their biggest test being in the semi finals against a strong Education University of Hong Kong and Lok Tsui Rowing Club composite crew.

especially Club Member Paul Bromley and his committee who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make the event possible.

World Rowing Coastal Championships (World Champs) and the 3rd Harbour Regatta is a lead up programme of the World Champs.

This is the 3rd edition of the Harbour Regatta that Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club and the Hong Kong, China Rowing Association have held. The aim of the race is to provide more chances for the general public to learn and enjoy coastal rowing. Hong Kong has successfully won the right to host the 2019

If you would like information on how to start rowing or get back on the water, please contact Rowing.manager@rhkyc.org.hk for more information. Additionally, if you would like to volunteer at the 2019 World Rowing Coastal Championships in November, please contact the Rowing Manager for more information.

Arguably the highlight of the Regatta for the Club was the Masters B Open 4x, a race between two Club crews that would be the last official race that former Rowing Captain and Noel Croucher Award recipient Martin Reynolds would participate in before retiring to the UK. The straight final was incredibly close, but all went to plan as Reynolds and his crew made a late charge to take the honours! The Club would like to thank all the volunteers and staff that made this event possible,

Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club

RYA, MIA, HKBIA

W O RD S: A L A N REID

Marine

As a Club we are members of several associations in the marine industry. I am sure that everyone knows that RYA stands for the Royal Yachting Association but the other two will not be well known. MIA stands for the Marinas Industry Association and the HKBIA is for the HK Boating Industry Association.

he Club has been affiliated to the RYA for many years. Sail Training at Middle Island offers courses for members to complete the RYA Power Boat Level Two certificate and the RYA Safety Boat Course. Members who volunteer to operate the clubs safety RIB’s, for mark laying or safety duty during regattas, must be on the Club’s approved list of RIB operators by having passed the RYA Power Boat Level 2 certificate. The Sail Training centre is audited yearly by the RYA with the auditor assessing the Club’s:

RIBs Powerboat instructor certificates Systems we have for checking the condition of the RIBs First Aid Boxes Tool Boxes (Safety equip, tools) Sailing Center SOP’s Emergency action plan The MIA was established in 1997 in Australia as the Marina Industries of Australia that, on expansion into the Asian and south Pacific region, rebranded themselves to be the Marina Industries Association. With members has 320 members in countries from New Zealand through to the Middle East the MIA represents marina owners, developers, managers and

operators of berthing, mooring, storage and slipway/workshop/boatyard facilities connected to sailing, cruising and recreational boating and the suppliers of goods and services to marinas.

MIA’s mission is to support the sustainable development of the marina industries through education, accreditation and research. The association accredit the Global Gold Anchor Scheme for marinas, the International Clean Marinas Program, the Fish Friendly Marina Certification Scheme and issue Certification for Marina Professionals. Every two years the MIA organise a convention and trade exhibition with the next one taking place in May 2019. The Marinas19 International Conference and Trade Exhibition will examine the big questions for marinas to 2030. What is the future of boat ownership and marina customers? What are the risks and opportunities associated with changes in technology enabled consumer behaviour? What are the risks and opportunities associated with changes in the interaction of climate change, propulsion technologies, government regulation and consumer expectations?

The HKBIA was set up in 2018 by local companies in the marine industry as a trade organisation to have a unified voice for Hong Kong companies, large and small, operating in the Pleasure Vessel sector of the marine industry in HK. The HKBIA now represents over 50 local companies from all walks of the industry including, boat builders, brokers, yacht management, charterers and distributors, to chandlers, clubs, marinas, insurance, training organisations, sail-makers, technical and professional services and specialised media. The aims and objectives of the association are: To be able to talk to government as a unified voice for the pleasure vessel industry, for both small and large companies. To survey the pleasure vessel industry so as to be able to represent to government that the pleasure vessel industry employs many people in Hong Kong, on board vessels, in shipyards, in engineering and repair companies, insurance, fuel etc. and contributes hundreds of millions of dollars yearly to the HK economy. To increase the standardisation of technical and environmental issues of the pleasure vessel industry in Hong Kong. The HKBIA is also a member of ICOMIA, the International Council of Marine Industry Associations, which, since 1966, is the international trade association representing the global marine industry. ICOMIA recently held their annual oversees executive meeting here in Hong Kong, and briefed the HKBIA on ICOMIA’s work worldwide. The HKBIA held it’s AGM at the Club in April. The RHKYC is the sector representative on the HKBIA for moorings. The Club pays subscription fees to these three organisations yearly. The total yearly amount is less than 0.005% of the club’s annual income. A very worthwhile investment. Happy Boating.

Established in 2001 by Bernard and Elizabeth Hooley, Oakdene’s boutique vineyard is located in Wallington on the Bellarine Peninsula near Melbourne; a region which enjoys a cool, maritime climate moderating the weather patterns, resulting in a long cool growing season; producing low yields of high quality fruit. There are eight grape varieties grown on the Oakdene estate that go into making the wines – Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Shiraz, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Dedication to excellence in the vineyard and winery has produced immediate results, with wines awarded medals and trophies in major wine shows, and a 5 star rating in James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion for the past four years. Misha’s Vineyard Wine Dinner Compass Room | Thursday 16 May ‘We’re on a wonderful journey in the most spectacular part of New Zealand. When we started this adventure our objective was to create something really special and our motto was, and will always be, “no compromise.’

Events | Promotions

Misha’s Vineyard grew from a passion for wine and a passion for marketing. Having spent 16 years living in Asia, the idea of producing a range of superb wines suited to Asian as well as Western foods, and to be able to do so in the stunningly beautiful country of New Zealand, became Misha and Andy Wilkinson’s ultimate challenge. Along with the experience of regional executive roles in marketing and sales for global companies, they made the monumental decision in 2001 for a wine business and finally started the establishment of Misha’s Vineyard in 2004. Misha’s Vineyard Wines is committed to best practices in all levels of vineyard management and wine production. Continuing a long-held tradition, Spier is owned and managed by the family who bought the farm in 1993. They live on the farm and work hands-on with the farming and leisure operations, together with Andrew Milne, who directs the business.
