Commodore’s Message

The Bridge

At the time of writing the T8 is hoisted, Hong Kong is battened down and what should have been Day 3 of the Volvo China Coast Regatta, the RHKYC’s premier big boat regatta, sees the territory’s sailors with their feet up. Thanks though to a good early call by the Chief Race Officer, Inge StrompfJepsen, to try and fit three races into each of the first two days so have a full six races under our belts and the prizes have already been handed out. Hopefully this will blow Commodore Robert Stoneley through quickly and we will be able 會長史東禮 to get the Volvo Hong Kong Vietnam Race away but the Race Committee faces a few anxious days of watching weather models. After all the effort and expense that goes into getting boats and crews ready, nobody wants this to be cancelled, especially the overseas entries, but there are some things that are outside our control. Luckily the weather was more favourable for the 2017 Optimist Asian & Oceanian Championships that we hosted at Middle Island earlier in the month. After an impressive opening ceremony involving a parade of teams and flags, the obligatory speeches and a lion dance, the competitors headed to bed ahead of the first day of racing impressed at the scale of the fireworks that the Club was able to lay on as well. The fact that the ceremony clashed with the National Day celebrations was due to some fortuitous planning by Gregoire Lacouture and the organising committee! When submitting their bid to host the event two years ago I don’t think the organising committee appreciated quite how much work would be involved but all the effort was well worth it as, having got things off with a bang, there followed a week of great sailing for the 137 sailors representing 16 nations. My congratulations to all involved in making this an incredibly successful event that truly showcased Hong Kong as a sailing destination.

| NOVEMBER 2017 AHOY!

Coming up on November we have of the Around the Island Race – or should I say Races. First up is the rowing and paddling Race which is being held out of Kellett Island on 26 November having outgrown its traditional Middle Island home. This year it’s attracted c. 50 crews, including 19 from overseas which is an indication of the strong global reputation the event is getting. Second up, is the sailing Race. Sponsored by Turkish Airlines this year, the Around the Island Race has grown into Hong Kong’s largest sailing event. With plenty of time still to enter, we are hopeful that we can beat the record of 258 entries this year. After the Prologue Leg, the main Volvo Ocean Race has finally started and before we know it the boats will be arriving in Hong Kong, having raced round half the world and stopped off in Lisbon, Cape Town, and Melbourne. While they won’t get here until the middle of January, preparations are well under way and it was good to see so many of you at the VOR Insider’s Preview last month, ready and willing to take on a role in making the event a success. If you are interested in volunteering please contact ruth@mayoandcalder.com. Looking even further ahead, it was great to hear that Hong Kong has been selected to host the 2019 World Offshore Rowing Championships. Being based out of Kellett Island, this will be a great boost to the sport here and a great showcase for the Club. Away from the sporting side of the club, there are two important events this month: the return of the Regatta Ball on 4 November and the Club’s Annual General Meeting on 29 November. I look forward to seeing you at both! In closing, while I’m always hesitant to report good news about the Kellett Island Development Project for fear of cursing it, I’m pleased to report that the current, final stage is still on track. There has been a slight delay to works related to extending the Bistro terrace out onto the old slipway but as this isn’t on the overall critical path it isn’t impacting the broader timeline. The end is in sight!

如欲成為義工的一份子,請即發電 郵至:ruth@mayoandcalder.com。

General Manager’s Message

The Bridge

Welcome to the penultimate edition of Ahoy! for 2017. Where has this year gone? With this issue of Ahoy! comes details of the Club’s Christmas Programme packed full of events and activities to keep you busy over the festive season. You may also view all the details on our website. But first let’s turn to what is happening this month. Right on the horizon is of course the Regatta Ball on Saturday 4 November and General Manager Mark Bovaird we are all looking forward to it very 總經理布馬克 much given its absence from our social calendar for three years due to the development project. The Operations Department has been busy preparing for months and for those of you attending, you are in for a real treat. If you are unfamiliar with the Regatta Ball, it is like no other in Hong Kong. The event is held throughout the Kellett Island clubhouse – in 11 separate venues with ten different concepts. Everyone begins the evening together at a cocktail reception under the stars before heading into dinner in a magnificent marquee. After dinner, the Club is your playground as you explore all the venues and the different wonders they behold. Head to the Compass Room for Champagne and seafood, a DJ and a live band, or to the Bistro where it’s Saturday Night Fever with three DJs, a fortune teller and a revolving sushi bar. Encounter a mermaid at the Poolside whilst you nibble on foie gras and listen to cool blue jazz. The Main Lawn and Main Deck become Mixology Square with a groove band and a dance band to enjoy whilst you enjoy wine, cheese and dessert. There is the ever popular casino in the Chart Room too! There is so much to see and do during the night, and of course there is a Full Breakfast to help see you through to the traditional survivors’ photograph at

0700hrs on Sunday morning! If you can’t join for the entire event, note there is a late entry option as well! For last minute tickets, please email regattaball@rhkyc.org.hk. Later this month we have the Torbrek Wine Dinner on the 16th. Torbreck is an Australian winery in the Barossa Valley, founded by David Powell in 1994. The winery has been listed as one of the World's Top 100 Wine Estates by Robert Parker. If you don’t know who Robert Parker is he is regarded by many as the world's most trusted authority on wine and has been for over 30 years. This wine dinner gives us a wonderful segway into another event I wish to highlight; the Charity ‘1000’ Robert Parker Point Wine Dinner. Robert Parker’s wine ratings are on a scale of Zero to 100 and we have a wine dinner on 2 December that will only feature wines to have achieved the 100 point pinnacle, there will be ten wines in all making the total of 1,000 points, and hence the name of the event. Given how very special this event is, and the very limited stocks available of these truly special wines, there are only 20 places available. As with previous Parker dinners, those attending will also be helping our very own RHKYC Charity Foundation by raising money for the charity. For information on these and other events, please do look within this issue or on our website. As covered by the Commodore, Typhoon Khanun resulted in cutting short the Volvo China Coast Regatta from three days of racing to two. As a result the regatta dinner was moved from Middle Island to poolside at Kellett Island and my thanks to all the staff from both clubhouses who came together to make the event the resounding success that it was, and of course to clear everything away in time afterwards for the approaching Typhoon. The loyalty and dedication of the entire team, both on the water and off, and their ability to adapt is certainly one of the reasons why the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club is one of the best clubs in the world. Don’t forget to book for the Christmas and New Year festivities now and I look forward to seeing you at the Regatta Ball survivors photograph!

National Day Fireworks and Dinner The Bridge

n 1 October, the RHKYC Charity Foundation invited over 45 children, assistants and families from the SAHK Jockey Club Elaine Field School (a special school for children with physical handicaps) and the Little Life Warrior Society (a childhood cancer mutual-support organisation), to the Club for celebration.

Mark Bovaird. Guests felt so excited about the mouth-watering buffet dinner on the Annex New Wing’s Rooftop, the incredible Causeway Bay backdrop, the close contact with the lively Chinese lions (courtesy of the Opening Ceremony that same night of the 2017 Optimist Asian & Oceanian Championship) and of course the spectacular fireworks.

The groups were greeted by our Commodore Robert Stoneley, Chairman of the RHKYC Charity Foundation Ambrose Lo and General Manager

Everyone enjoyed the night and we look forward to hosting our next event which is the Red Cross Hospital Schools’ Christmas Party.

Autumn Regatta W O RD S: N AO MI REBEC C A | PH OTO S: GU Y N OW EL L

Feature | Autumn Regatta

90 boats from nine classes and 11 divisions turned out for the Club’s opening regatta held on the weekend of 16 to 17 of September.

180 degrees requiring the marks to be reset and new course selections made. Racing eventually kicked off at 1411hrs with easterly courses chosen starting from Hung Hom. The first fleets to set off were the J/80s and Sportsboats, the Etchells (after a general recall) and Impalas. The Flying Fifteens’ sequence was postponed as the wind dropped, and then restarted in the new westerly breeze. The westerly breeze resulted in downwind starts for following fleets, the Dragons set out next with all other starts thereafter setting off in six minute intervals. The later starters got the benefit of the breeze and caught up with the rest of the fleet but when they approached the huge hole off of Tai Koo Shing the track turned into a huge drifter with racers battling it out in no breeze and the tide against them. The hole eventually resulted in a massive pile up at the top mark where almost half of the fleet tried to round the mark at the same time. After the pile up, the westerly wind caught up to the fleet and sent the fleet up the course, reports came in from around the race track of first 6kts then a few minutes later 14kts. The first boat to cross the finish line at Hung Hom was J/80 Footloose at 15h 58m 12s with all boats finished racing by 16h 33m 10s. Race 1 of the Autumn Regatta was also designated as Bart’s Bash “the biggest sailing event in the world”. Bart’s Bash is a global charity

rew Taylor and Joachim Isler on their Mills 41 Ambush took home the silverware in Big Boat Division 1, just ahead of Shawn Kang’s Lighthorse AlphaPlus who also had a first and second place in the two races. Richard van den Berg’s Juggerknot won first for Big Boat Division 2. The biggest fleet of the regatta was by far the Etchells with 14 entries. Etchells Gunga Din helmed by Isamu Sakai sailed to the win with five points, two points ahead of Frank van Kempen’s King of Pin and Mick McCool and Tim Roberts Fiddler’s Green both on seven points in third. Day 1 was a day of challenging conditions for racing with nine starts to get away. Two typhoons in the region did their best to suck the breeze out of Hong Kong. Racing was initially delayed as the wind had swung

NOVEMBER 2017 AHOY! |

Feature | Autumn Regatta fund-raising sailing race taking place at 100s of venues, with 1000s of sailors in 100s of different classes of boat around the world, 24 boats and 135 participants took part in the event from the Club putting the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club at number 4 on the top venues that hosted Bart’s Bash 2017. Considering there was little to no breeze forecasted for Day 2, a pleasant surprise awaited Race Officer Barry Truhol as he arrived at the race track, prompting him to comment, “What do you know, we’ve got wind!” Racing started at 1100hrs for the J/80s and Sportsboat divisions followed the Etchells, which took them beating up to the Central mark which was stationed close to the Hong Kong Convention Centre. Rounding the mark, they hoisted their kites and headed downwind to PWD mark and then to Dock Buoy, before turning back to finish up to finish at PWD. All other fleets were set off at 6 minute intervals on similar courses ranging in length from 3.7nm to 6.8nm. It was a sight to see the smaller class boats racing alongside Frank Pong’s custom 75 Jelik. The Impalas were set off first for Race 3 but following a complete wind shift to the east, the Impala race was abandoned on their first leg. The committee boat hoisted its L flag and competitors followed towards Hung Hom where the new easterly start line was set. Between setting up courses and going into sequence, the wind dropped to 4kts, increased to 6 and then down to 1.5. With the fluctuating breeze the AP was hoisted but after 20 minutes, the wind had dropped to 3kts across the race course and the difficult decision was made at 1420hrs to abandon racing for the day and head to the bar. The prizegiving was held on the Main Lawn, engraved glassware and The Artist Beer with specially designed labels with the winners names printed on them was presented to the winners.

Eagle Quest II protected by Chinese War Ship in Somalia Feature | Eagle Quest II protected by Chinese War Ship in Somalia

Eagle Quest ll, a 58 foot sailing boat owned by Club member K.D.Chu, completed an Arctic sailing voyage from Hong Kong to Ireland last year and became the first Chinese sailing boat to cross the North West passage in North Canada. After the boat was repaired in Ireland, K.D. continued his expedition this year by sailing Eagle Quest ll back to Hong Kong through the Mediterranean and the Suez Canal in Egypt.

he planning of the voyage met some difficulty with regards the stretch of dangerous water in the Gulf of Aden off the Coast of Somalia where pirate activity is common and sailing boats are vulnerable and an easy target for pirates attack. The Chinese Navy is part of the UN Commission to protect merchant ships in the area and earlier in the year K.D. sought, via the Hong Kong Marine Department, protection from the Chinese Navy. At first protection was not granted and K.D. considered for safety reasons to abandon the remaining voyage and leave the boat in Europe. However, luck turned around in late July when K.D received a message from the Hong Kong Marine Department advising that the Chinese Navy would indeed be able to escort Eagle Quest II through the Gulf of Aden. By that time, only K.D and one other crew, Jason Chan from Taiwan remained and all

other crew had dropped out because the trip was considered too dangerous and could not be covered by any insurance. In order to continue the voyage, Eagle Quest II desperately required more crew and so I volunteered and I joined Eagle Quest II in Djibouti, a small country in the North of Africa and a former French Colony. The boat was covered by fine sand due to heat sand storms from the dessert and we didn’t have enough water to wash the boat. We set sail at sunset on 18 August headed for Shalala Oman. Our meeting point with the Chinese Navy was 24 nautical miles off Djibouti at midnight. Throughout the night we made radio contact and set our course according to instructions given by the Chinese Navy but we didn’t see any ships in our radar and we were a bit concerned of the whereabouts of our escort. It was only when dawn broke we realized that there were two Chinese war ships

on either side of Eagle Quest II – it was an awesome sight and a sign of great relief as well We were still uncertain as to what kind of escort we were getting – were they going to send marines on board with guns in case pirates attack or did they have other plans? They instructed us to make radio contact every hour around the clock and maintain a minimum of 6kts and there was also a Chinese hospital ship joining the convoy for two days. We were also warned about other merchants ships that might be on a collision course with us at night and on a couple of occasions we saw suspicious fishing boats in the distance but with the war ships in sight we felt quite safe. In spite of all the dangers, we felt quite privileged that so much effort was made to protect Eagle Quest II. One of the Chinese warships, Yangzhou, escorted us for five days until we reached Shalala Oman safely On the last day, a Chinese Navy officer came on board to say goodbye and gave us three cases of Tsang Tao beer and two cases of water. What a treat. K. D. will continue his amazing voyage back to Hong Kong sailing through Sri Lanka, Malaysia , Singapore, Vietnam and returns to Hong Kong in early November. I hope that the Club members will join me to welcome Eagle Quest II back into Victoria Harbor and celebrate this historical voyage for Hong Kong.

Hong Kong, 30 September to 7 October 2017

he 2017 Optimist Asian & Oceanian Championships, organised by the Hong Kong Sailing Federation (HKSF) and co-organised by the International Optimist Dinghy Association (IODA), the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club (RHKYC) and the Hong Kong Optimist Dinghy Association (HKODA) opened on 30 September with the Official Measurement at Middle Island and Registration taking place at the official partner hotel. The Far East Opening Ceremony was held at Kellett Island in conjunction with Hong Kong’s National Day celebrations on 1 October. Sailors, coaches and their families were entertained by traditional Hong Kong lion dancers followed by an amazing display of fireworks. The opening ceremony commenced with a flag parade featuring 132 sailors from 16 countries and later featured team New Zealand performing a Haka and team Sri Lanka drumming for the crowd. Chairman, Gregoire Bourrut Lacouture opened the speeches by thanking everyone for coming to Hong Kong noting it was the first time that Hong Kong had hosted such an international Optimist event. Kevin Whitcraft, IODA

President, emphasised the need for young sailor to pursue their dreams in an Optimist and that all great adult sailors had started with Optimists at one point in their sailing career. HKSF President, Tong Shing, himself an ex-Olympic athlete, was pleased that Hong Kong was part of such an important event for the youth sailors and and wished all the sailors the best. Other guest speakers include Demolar Du, Far East boats President and Robert Stoneley, the Commodore of the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club whowas extremely honored to host the event in Middle Island. To conclude, Nuno Gomez, IODA Vice President, declared the 2017 Asian & Optimist Championship open with the raising of the Optimist Class flag. Official racing kicked off on 2 October, with Hong Kong turning on blue skies and 5 to 10 knot breeze. The first day saw three qualifying races with the race track positioned off Stanley Bay. The Optimists sailing a classic Optimist Worlds course, set off on an easterly course for Race 1. First place went to China's Dingjie Shen CHN111 followed by Jinhuan Yu CHN 11 with third place going to Hong Kong's Lumiere Ng HKG313 of Hebe Haven Yacht Club. In the blue fleet, after a general recall, Hong Kong’s Duncan Gregor HKG205 of Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club took first place. He was followed by Thailand’s Intira Panpiboon THA 945 and Patcharee Sringm THA 112. Principal Race Officer Ilker Bayindir summed up the day's conditions. “Today’s wind conditions were not so promising at first; it was all the

Championships

Day 2 of the Championships saw blue skies and a better than forecasted easterly breeze of 6 to 12kts on the race track positioned again off Stanley Bay in Hong Kong. SGP 199 Muhammad Daniel Kei Bin Muhammad Yazid who was third overall after the first day of racing, led the fleet up to the first mark. There was only one UFD issued during the start of Race 4 for the blue fleet to USA 21021. At mark one the tide and weakening breeze resulted in the fleet tightening up, but then 6kts came in and the fleet started to move again. USA 21325 Cort Snyder took an early lead ahead of USA 18402 Kaitlyn Hamilton and IND 1305 Harshita Tomar. Race 5 saw the breeze shift right as predicted and the Yellow fleet set off in around 9kts of breeze after two general recalls and two BFDs. In the end first, second and third went to CHN 21, SGP 4573 and HKG 205. The tide turned for Race 6 resulting in a general recall being called for both the Yellow and Blue fleets with the black flag being raised and 13 BFDs being issued. The final start of the day was for the Blue fleet. There was a definite battle between the fleet for most of the race and by the end JPN 3017 came in first followed by CHN 2 and HKG 207. At the end of six races over two days, TUR 151 Demir Dirik was first overall (moving up from 6th place after day 1). Thailand’s Panwa Boonnak THA 244 is second (up from 4th) and THA 168 Jedtavee Yongyuennard is third (up from 8th). Race officer Charlie Manzoni commented on the day’s racing “We started off with some pretty shifty conditions this morning. We had a variation in the wind of about 40 or 50 degrees which made the course setting tricky but we persevered and all came good in the end. We have had a fairly consistent breeze of 10kts throughout the day, which gently moved to the right. The racing has been very tactical because of the tide, which has been a constant factor for the sailors. It was a great day in beautiful conditions.” The wind came out in force for Day 3 of the Optimist Asian & Oceanian Championships for the 2017 Team Racing Championships. To qualify, 16 teams were nominated, ranked by point score for their top four sailors,as per thier results after two days of fleet racing.

With 32 races run over seven flights, China was the top performer in a series of tight races, where four straight wins against Japan 2, India, Thailand 1 and Turkey gave them the early card to the finals where they took on Turkey again winning best of two out of three races. Asked about how they felt about the afternoon’s team racing win, CHN 10 Xinru Lin commented “This is our first time in Optimist Asian & Oceanian Championships team racing we are really excited and we are very happy with our win because we trained very hard.” Team racing was exciting, face paced, and the sailors thoroughly enjoyed the camaraderie. With ideal conditions continuing; sunny skies and 12 to 20kts across the racetrack marked Day 4. Thailand’s Jedtavee Yongyuennarn, Turkey’s Demir Dirk and Thailand’s Panwa Boonnak were the top three contenders on the leaderboard. After two inspired races, Singapore’s Muhammad Daniel Kei Bin Muhammad Yazid jumped from 4th to first overall with a 1st and 2nd giving him a commanding lead on the fleet with a total of 28 points; 15 points ahead of his nearest competitor Demir Dirk from Turkey. Going into the Finals, five different nations were represented in the top 10; Singapore, Turkey, China, Thailand and Hong Kong. The sailing conditions for the final day of racing were excellent with 15 to 18kts of breeze over the racetrack located off Stanley Bay. Singapore’s Muhammad Daniel Kei Bin Muhammad Yazid sailed his way to 2nd place in the first race of the day confirming his position as first overall of the 2017 Asian Optimist and Oceanian Championship – 16 points ahead of second place overall finisher Demir Dirk of Turkey. China’s Xilun Lin was only one point behind Dirik. The Closing Ceremony included Wisdom, the Official Mascot of the Volvo Ocean Race who came to pay a visit to our sailors followed by a large lucky draw, dinner and prizegiving. Champions were awarded trophies made with up-cycled materials keeping in tune with the Sailors for the Sea, clean regatta scheme. Nuno Gomez, concluded the evening and the Championship with the traditional hand-over of the Official IODA flag to the 2018 Asian & Oceanian Championship host country: Myanmar. A big thank you to all the volunteers, around 100, to all the Organising Committee, HKSF, IODA, RHKYC and HKODA, all the sponsors and of course all the parents/ team Leaders who helped us so much in ensuring the event’s success.

time shifting, shifting, shifting but the main direction was 090. Three races for Yellow and Blue fleets were completed with great success with only one protest attempt. Everyone was happy because of the conditions and especially because of the performance of the race committee, who all day long changed the positions of the marks. All the time the sailors had to adjust to the tidal conditions pushing them parallel to the starting and finishing lines but the conditions were still great.”

n 17 September the Family Panel welcomed over 50 children and their parents for an afternoon of fun and games in the recently opened Playroom and Youth Club Room. The theme for the event was nautical with many of the children, as well as all of the sub-committee members, properly dressed for the festivities as pirates and mermaids. After a formal welcome by Family Panel Chair Grace Leung-Aprea, the children were lead through different classic party games including Musical Statue, Fishing, Pass the Parcel, Scavenger Hunts and photo booth competition. A talented face painter and balloon twister was also available throughout the party and was a huge hit with the children. There was certainly neither a dull moment throughout nor a shortage

of prizes for the kids. The afternoon ended with a movie to allow the children, and completely worn out parents, a chance to wind down after an action packed day. Every child left the playroom with not only a huge smile, but also small gifts to remember the event. The Playroom is a beautiful space and we hope to utilize it more with hosted events for the children. Special thanks to F&B for sponsoring pizza and ice cream and all of the sub-committee volunteers for making this venue and inaugural event a huge success. During the party, a few parents signed up to volunteer to assist with future events. This is most welcomed and appreciated. Please email fampan@rhkyc.org.hk for additional information.

HISTORY OF THE LIPTON TROPHY – Courtesy of the late Frank Hydes Bob Hawley and Richard Hownam-Meek were joint owners of the yacht Calypso. Bob’s company were the agents for Lipton Tea and the Lipton’s representative, who was himself a keen yachtsman, used to time his annual visits to Hong Kong to enable him to do some racing with Bob and Richard. In 1967 he joined them in a Hong Kong Royal Navy Volunteer Reserves Memorial Vase race and happened to mention that Lipton Tea had recently given a trophy to a Club in the UK. Bob and Richard plied him with more beer until their hint penetrated and a few months later a magnificent silver model of a J Class yacht was presented to the club in January 1968. Between 1899 and 1930 Mr (later Sir) Thomas Lipton challenged repeatedly for the America’s Cup and built no less than five “Shamrocks”. In 1920 Shamrock IV came within one race

of winning the cup. Terms laid down by the New York Yacht Club included the stipulation that the challenger should have sailed across the Atlantic to challenge. Interesting also, perhaps, as representing the social attitudes of the times, Lipton, considered a mere grocer by the Committee, was never accepted for membership of the Royal Yacht Squadron. The format for the race is a pursuit race in the harbour with staggered start times to be held over a short course on Saturday afternoon. If all boats are raced equally well they should all finish at the same time. If boats have not entered the Lipton Trophy online, they can sign on in the Course Room on race day.

n Saturday 7 October the Etchells Class, in conjunction with its regular class racing, held a youth/open training day. Eager to introduce the Etchells to young sailors, the Class invited young members (via the Young Members Sub-committee) and others to join the sailing and get a feel for the boat and the fleet in a casual and relaxed setting. Fleet members, Thomas Cheung, Mark Thornburrow and Mike Huang, (the latter two fresh from placing 5th at the Etchells Worlds Championships

in San Francisco), kicked off the training session on the dock, where they discussed the technical aspects of the boat and shared rig setting and tuning tips. New sailors were then paired with more experienced Etchells sailors in preparation for the day’s racing and the fleet set off in a steady easterly breeze. Mark and Mike followed up with some fantastic on-the-water coaching during the race. Shadowing the fleet with Iphone in hand, they provided boats with tips and suggestions on sail trim, crew manoeuvres and tactics. After the day’s racing, the participants gathered on the Main Lawn to view the photos and video footage over some refreshing, cold beverages. A lively discussion of best practices, sail trim, mark roundings and manoeuvres ensued. Overall, an excellent day of sailing with 10 new sailors on 14 Etchells and some newly minted members of the Etchells fleet! Building on the success of this event, the Class plans to host additional youth/open training days. For those interested, please join the Etchells Whatsapp Group and follow our Facebook page (links may be found on the RHKYC Etchells page).

Day 4: After three days of racing and 10 races, Jon Crawford and I made silver with James Ferguson and Harry Fullwood making bronze. We set out with high hopes, when we first got out it was around 8kts and within the second half of the first race the wind had started to go right and picked up to 15 then gradually picked up through the next two races. I think the team struggled in the last race as the conditions were not ideal for us but we managed to survive the day and blast back to shore in 18kts so not a bad way to end the day.

were going to be even more tired than we were after racing yesterday. We rigged up had competitors briefing and went out, we thought it was going to similar conditions to the day before but it wasn’t (at least for the yellow fleet) it was light, patchy, lumpy not ideal sailing conditions but the yellow fleet managed to get in three out of four race with blue fleet completing all the races due for the day, although the race committee made us wait around for while they hoisted AP over A so the fleet sailed in. Day 3: The yellow fleet had to launch an hour plus earlier than normal in order to fit a race in to match the blue fleet. So out we went to race, he 29er Worlds were held in Long Beach, California, USA from 31 July to 5 August and here, Matthew Clark shares his diary: Day 1: The first day of the event I (and I’m sure some other people too) were feeling nervous. For me, it was mainly because it was my first big event aside from the US nationals. The conditions for the day were 10kts to start with and building to 18kts over the course of the day. The sea state dramatically changed from flat to large inconsistent waves which we found challenging. We had three races that day with different conditions in every race so that had basically prep is for the rest of the event. At the end of the day the whole team was tired after a tough day on the water. Day 2: Today there were four races planned for both fleets, so we knew after today we

Day 5: On the 5th day of racing and second day of finals the team was feeling confident and ready to go. Today we were on a course which was basically flat water and 10-18kts throughout the day. The conditions were perfect for a day of yachting, it was champagne sailing. At the end of the day we were happy with results and sailed in with high hopes for the final day of racing in Long Beach, California. Day 6: Final day of racing, I didn’t have or need a coffee as the adrenaline for the days racing had given me the energy for the morning. We arrived at the club rigged up made sure everything was perfect for the last day of racing, we were scheduled to have three races and we had two good races and the last race go thrown out due to one of the crews was stuck under the boat in the event of a capsize and half the fleet stopping to help out finally he got out but was needed CPR and was rushed to the hospital, he’s fine now though. I was happy with the whole event and placing 31st in silver, James and Harrison finishing 14th in bronze.

2019 World Rowing Coastal Championships to be held in Hong Kong Harbour W O RD S: M A RK W EL L ES | PH OTO S: WA N N G

Rowing

n 2 October the World Rowing Federation, FISA (from the French, Federation Internationale des Societes d’Aviron), announced Hong Kong as the venue for the 2019 World Rowing Coastal Championships. The result of nearly two years of effort by the Hong Kong, China Rowing Association Bidding Committee, containing several Club members, this will be the first time the World Championships for coastal rowing will be held in Asia and only the second time outside of Europe. With the event targeted for the autumn, the Club is scheduled to play a significant role in supporting the HKCRA in running the championships, given the 6km race course will be in Victoria Harbour. Logistics for the event are pending government approvals but it is expected boats will launch from the Wan Chai Basin. Kellett Island is scheduled to be the center of race day management and other land based activities.

any crews happy to stay on. The Club has ambitious future plans for the ATIR, to make it an iconic annual international race attracting top coastal rowers from around the world and the 2019 link will further add to the international profile of the RHKYC event. This will be just one part of a much wider activity promotion plan which the HKCRA will put in place to ensure there is a solid legacy from the World Championships through a significant expansion of participation in coastal rowing at all levels of the Hong Kong community.

On a related note, in anticipation of the successful World Championships bid, the Asian Rowing Federation had, in September, already awarded Hong Kong the right to host the 2018 Asian Rowing Coastal Championships to further promote coastal rowing in Asia – it will also serve as a “test” event in preparation for 2019. The Asian Championships will also be strongly supported by the Club, offering an opportunity for the event Organizing Committee to fine tune arrangements and test many of the systems for the World Championships the following year.

In an effort to provide the optimal Hong Kong experience for visiting competitors, the Around the Island Race in 2019 will be scheduled for the week after the World Championships, offering competitors an additional race for NOVEMBER 2017 AHOY! |

achieving the national record in junior doubles at the national championships, then went on to be selected for the GB team at the Junior European Championships, winning gold at two consecutive representations. She enjoyed her sport, her attitude and work ethic suiting a sport in which time and dedication are rewarded with speed.

aving been asked to write an article for Ahoy!, with the remit of “freedom to write about anything you like” (I decided my interest in classic cars wasn’t appropriate on this occasion), so I thought I would write about something that I have spent years thinking about. Something that I, along with coaches all over the world continue to think about and attempt to capture and refine in the dynamic and ever changing world of sport. I myself cannot claim to have ascended to the highest heights of sporting success. I am happy with what I have achieved, the majority of people cannot say that they have won medals at a World Championship level, but I suppose the reason I am still involved with sport, this sport, the sport I love, is that I feel I have never quite been there when the right combination of ingredients and circumstances combine to produce what I would class as ‘the perfect performance’. Of course there is no one answer to the question ‘what makes a successful athlete?’. It is of course a combination of things, some of which I will discuss in this article. It involves talent, hard work, sacrifice, time and of course, a not insignificant peppering of luck. A story that springs to mind as one where the stars aligned and shone success upon an athlete possessing the talent and the desire for hard work and sacrifice is one of a school friend of mine, Kate. Kate began rowing at around age 13. We were lucky in that our school was next to the River Tees in North Yorkshire, UK. I was a couple of year groups above the girl in question and remember being in a motor launch with

32

our coach, a few months after the girls group had begun rowing. It must have been late November and the group of girls were wobbling downstream on a rapidly darkening autumn afternoon in their single sculls. The girls were new to sculling and they were all making the same mistakes. Most of the girls were happy to be out on the river, they caught bad strokes but caught their balance and continued without much thought. One girl, however, would make a mistake, she would stop, think about what went wrong, then continue, trying to work out the issue and attempting not to make the same mistake again. ‘She’s going to be good, that girl’, our coach said to me, ‘you can see she’s a thinker’. Kate wasn’t, at that time, the tallest or fastest girl in the group, there was nothing particularly to distinguish her from the others, apart from the short pauses after the bad strokes and the decreasing regularity of mistakes. Fast forward four years. Kate achieved some success at under 14 and under 15 age group at a national level. She rowed with my sister,

As with any journey, the path is never smooth. A move away from home after leaving school turned out to be a fork in the road. Rowing wasn’t going as planned, the environment wasn’t quite right and the progression slowed. She struggled initially at Under 23 level, still producing solid performances, but ones that did not meet her high standards and expectations. Doubts crept in about her future in the sport and she nearly walked away from the sport to pursue her studies, as so many young athletes do when the realities of adult life begin to hit home. At the time, myself and a small group of other lightweight rowers were training at Tees Rowing Club in the Northeast of England. The club was a relative unknown in comparison to the bastions of British Rowing, mostly based on the Thames in the south, but the club name was beginning to be spoken of as a source of some promising athletes. Our young, now Southern based rower made the choice to move away from the Thames and back up to her home county, and began training at Tees. It was a fortuitous move, having the support of family close allowed her to concentrate on her training and she began once again to progress and grow as an athlete. Promising performances at GB trials got her on the selectors radar, she obviously had talent, the ingredients were there and they were being mixed in the right way.

Being a lightweight athlete is not easy. The huge training load required to be an elite athlete, coupled with a calorie restriction to meet a weight limit before a competition requires an almost religious commitment to food diaries, salads and saying ‘no’ to summer barbeques. This has broken the will of many an athlete, especially as the successful lightweights tend not to be those who sit comfortably near the weight limit. The added sacrifice that lightweight rowing requires is admirable. I can’t think of another sport wherein a weight limit is to be met just two hours before battle commences in some of the most rigorous and closely fought races at the Olympic games. For this reason, the camaraderie amongst lightweights is incredible. From my own experience, talking about the foods you will eat after the last race of the season, suffering the grumpy, hunger induced post training afternoon silences and constant weight watching are things only understood by other lightweights. The regime garners an unspoken mutual respect amongst those who have done it. Our young female lightweight rower, in early 2012, now 22, had too mastered not only her sport, but the intricacies of the careful weight fluctuations required throughout the season to both stay healthy, and compete at weight when required. At the 2012 Olympic trials, she won the lightweight women’s trial and was selected as one half of the women’s double for the 2012 Olympiad. The hard work was paying off. For those of us who know her, had worked alongside her, had seen the sacrifice, determination and grit that had gone in over the previous 8 years, we could not have been prouder. This, in our eyes, was the pinnacle of achievement in our field of reference. She had made it, an Olympian. But, for her, that was not enough. We knew that, she knew that. What happened next is well documented. Kate and Sophie won the lightweight women’s doubles at the Olympics. In the UK they were the poster girls of women’s rowing. Along with the other exceptional performances from the GB team at that games they appeared on stamps, on TV and in magazines. But Kat just wanted to row. In three months, she was back in a boat, back at her base, just like before.

Rowing

The breakthrough year was 2011. The talent and work ethic that had been there right from those first strokes seven years previously had finally begun to gain serious momentum, training was going well, injuries had not interrupted the flow of the yearly rowing cycle and she was firing on all cylinders. In that year she won the Under 23 World by a convincing margin.

I think it is sometimes easy to see successful sportspeople as superhuman, as another class of people whose achievements cannot be matched by mere mortals. But success is measured against personal goals and still must be worked for. Nobody is successful without sacrifice, at any level. Kat reached extraordinary levels through hard work and commitment, mainly her own, but supported by the large team of people whose job it is to keep these human machines running and in peak condition. What I find so compelling and satisfying about coaching is predicting, albeit with experience and science, the formula for each athlete within a tight knit crew, then implementing

the formula and seeing the result. Some coaches obviously have a formula that works, from years of experience. I am towards the beginning of my journey to building my formula and learning how to mix the raw ingredients in the correct ways to achieve success. It, like competing, takes trial and error, will involve disappointment and re-evaluation, but will eventually, hopefully, achieve success Success means many things to many people, so while the majority of us will never go to the Olympics, hard work, resilience and achievable goals are the key to satisfaction and enjoyment of sport. It may not always be a smooth path, but it makes the end result all the sweeter.

Pontoons at Kellett Island W O RD S: A L A N REID

Marine In the first quarter of 2018 the Club will be again altering the pontoon layout at Kellett for, hopefully, the last time. The reclamation at the old Police Officers’ Club is due to be removed by the end of February 2018 and we are then required to revert to our original pontoon layout, last seen in 2010. For new members to the Club the old configuration was as below:

quite low we are in consultation with them to increase the capacity. As can be seen from the pictures below the pontoons are able to safely carry more than a few persons and we hope to convince the Marine Department of this. So hopefully, after seven years of disruption in the typhoon shelter, at last there is a light at the end of the tunnel, and it is not a train coming the other way! Fair winds and happy sailing.

The new pontoons that have been installed in the last two years were manufactured by Marinetek and are build from concrete. These have been supplied to the Club from the contractor in the typhoon shelter as part of the re-provisioning process after work is complete. Extra pontoons will be required to allow us to return to our original layout and these will also

Wine of the Month Conte d’Attimis-Maniago Pinot Grigio Friuli Colli Orientali DOC 2015 – Friuli Colli Orientali DOC, Italy Straw yellow colour. The characteristic, elegant and intense bouquet is rich in oak, walnut husk, yellow peaches and golden apples. Harmonious and sophisticated with marked yeasty hints acquired by maturation “sur lies”. The wine is lively on the palate where it becomes full and velvety with very persistent ripe fruit flavours, supported by a pleasant crispness.

The new Bucket List at the Main Deck A new Bucket List will soon be available at the Main Deck after our bi-monthly request for new menu item selections. Our members have voted and we are happy to present you the updated Bucket List.

[Suggested food paring: raw and cooked seafood, fish, crustaceans, clear soups, San Daniele ham] Château Soucherie Anjou Rouge 2014 – Anjou, Loire Valley, France Intense purple colour. The nose expresses nice ripeness while retaining the graphite expression of a shale soil. The complexity comes from hints of blackcurrant, menthol, liquorice and minerality. The palate is open and digestible. It is defined by a full-bodied and sappy structure without excess alcohol. The long persistent of tannins, while slightly prominent, are well integrated into the whole. [Suggested food paring: ham and salami, grilled white meat, tartar or carpaccio, firm-fleshed fish and soft cheese] Available in all F&B outlets at $298 per bottle. NOVEMBER 2017 AHOY! |
