Commodore’s Message
The Bridge
The Boase Cohen & Collins Inter-School Sailing Festival was held once again at Middle Island over the weekend of 9 and 10 March. Despite the inhospitable weather conditions, it was great to have had so many young sailors and supporters attending and the competitors didn’t let the occasional torrential downpours and lack of wind spoil their weekend of competition. If your child’s school isn’t yet taking part in this great event, maybe you could help make introductions or indeed encourage your child’s school to take up sailing as a school activity with us. The BuyAssociation 3rd Harbour Regatta was held on 17 March. A lead up programme of the upcoming 2019 World Rowing Coastal Rowing Championship, the event was another success with 174 competitors from 15 different universities and rowing clubs turning to race over a single 630m course with two turns outside Kellett Island. RHKYC obtained three 1st places and four 2nd paces out of nine race categories. Well done RHKYC Rowing Team!

Here we are in April and it’s a busy month indeed for the sailing section as we head towards the end of season in May. We’ve been talking about the inaugural Hong Kong to Puerto Galera Race for a very long time and it is happening this month. The 650nm Race has a staggered start with a view to having all of the participating yachts finish within a reasonable time for the on-location prizegiving party. The IRC Racer 3 and IRC Cruiser divisions are scheduled to start on Tuesday 16 April while the rest of the fleet starts on Wednesday 17 April. If you can, please come down on both days to give both fleets a rousing send-off. On 27 April we host the last of the pursuit races – the BuyAssociation Tomes Cup and the next day we have the much looked forward to, and dare I say infamous, Nations’ Cup. That day too, 28 April, the Club will be celebrating the end of the Kellett Island Development Project which includes the completion of the children’s playground. We will be having a day of festivities for everyone both on and off the water, celebrating on this. I very much look forward to seeing you there. April is also a key competition month for the rowing and paddle sports section of the Club. The main event this month will be the KPMG Lamma 500 Dragon Boat Championships that will be held on Sunday 14 April. The Club is entering crews into the Women’s, Open, Mixed and Junior categories of the event. On the same weekend several Members of the Club’s outrigger canoe team will travel to Hawaii to compete in the OC1 and OC2 categories of the Maui to Molokai Race and then compete in the Ka’iwi Channel Relay the following weekend. I hope you will join me in wishing all those competing for the Club in these races, all the very best! Last by not least; please be reminded that the deadline for nominating candidates for this year’s Electoral General Meeting is 17 April. The necessary forms and further information can be found in the members’ log-in section of the website.

General Manager’s Message The final element of the Kellett Island Development project will open this month when the children’s climbing frame is installed outside the new Sports Bar and Bowling Alley. At times it has seemed like it has been a long time since we started on the journey, but at others it has felt like it was only yesterday, but either way I am sure that all members will be glad that the work is now finally complete and we have the clubhouse back to enjoy.
The Bridge General Manager Mark Bovaird

As we all know, Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club is one of the best and friendliest clubs in the world. It is built on a respect for the sports that we all love and the sportsmanship and camaraderie of like minded members enjoying the sporting competition and the Club’s facilities with their families and guests. Regrettably however, I need to take this opportunity to remind members to be mindful of the Club Bye-Laws which have been set by the members of the Club and are intended for the benefit and convenience of all members and their guests. As a member, it is your responsibility to make yourself aware of the Bye-Laws and it is essential that you and your guests abide by the them at all times and also co-operate with members of staff if they have to remind you of the rules if and when you are breaking them. In particular we have noted an increase in the number of members and guests using their phones in areas where they are not supposed to and not abiding by the dress code – particularly in the Compass Room. The General Committee has tasked staff with enforcing the rules and reporting infringements. As such, should members or their guests disregard the rules or be rude to staff when they are enforcing them, then the General Committee will consider what disciplinary action requires to be taken against those members. Thank you for your assistance in abiding by the Bye-Laws and maintaining the friendly and enjoyable Club atmosphere the Club is renowned for. On to more positive news: it has been great to see the Club buzzing with activity lately including during the very rainy Boase Cohen & Collins Inter-School Sailing Festival last month which ended up with the heavens opening and letting down a massive downpour during the prizegving and, in contrast, with the 3rd BuyAssociation Harbour Rowing Regatta which thankfully saw beautiful sunny weather for the prizegiving on the new Rooftop! This month we have a very full calendar of sporting events and I am in particular looking forward to donning my Saltire-emblazoned hard hat once again for the Nations’ Cup! What are you going to be wearing this year to support your country? Also on Nations’ Cup day, 28 April, we are celebrating the end of the Kellett Island Development Project with a huge family friendly Kellett Island Big Day. See previous page for details but be sure to mark your diaries for this. Also within this issue you will find information on the Mendel Wine Dinner being held on 18 April in the Compass Room. Mendel Winery is a relatively new Argentinean winery that was founded in 2003 by one of Argentina’s most respected and experienced winemakers, Roberto de la Mota and the architect Anabelle Sielecki. Their wines have very quickly established themselves as being among the best available from that region and this is certainly a wine dinner not to be missed. Club member, Philip Bowring, will be hosting a Speaker’s Corner to present his new book – Empire of the Winds, on 10 April and I hope to see many of you there. Please see our website for full details on what will be a fascinating presentation and which will put the current claims over this region’s seas into the perspective of two millennia of sailing and trading connecting east and west, north and south. On 16 April, renowned sailor and rower, Jock Wishart, will be hosting a Speaker’s Corner. Whilst primarily focused on his recent adventure, Row to the Pole, where he and five other rowed to the North Pole, it will also cover his recent sailing exploits at the Commodores Cup and also his past sailing in Hong Kong waters. Easter is coming and on 21 April we will have a special Easter Sunday Family Buffet Lunch and Egg Hunt in the Bistro and bookings will be taken for those wishing to join in this Easter celebration. Now that we have our expanded Bistro, we will be holding more seasonal Club events in the Bistro for members’ enjoyment (in addition to Fireworks, Christmas and Thanksgiving). For those not wishing to book that day, the Bistro will be available for walk-ins on the usual first-come-first-served basis. Here’s an important heads up for next month… it’s the 6th installment of our Michelin Chef Series: featuring Heinz Beck. Chef Beck currently has 3 Michelin stars at his La Pergola restaurant in Rome and he and his team will be coming to Hong Kong to take up residence in the Compass Room for three days to share their skills, tastes and creations with our members. Please see page 33. This will certainly be a culinary experience not to be missed. Lastly, whilst it may be some eight months away, now is the time to note that the Regatta Ball is confirmed for Saturday 16 November. We’re asking members to guess the theme – see our homepage for details, and of course, it is never too early to start organizing your table and planning your outfit!

Feature | Hong Kong Race Week The 6th edition of Hong Kong Race Week, held from 12 to 17 February, got off to a cracking start with lion dancers launching golden flying pigs into the crowd, as a nod to the year of the golden pig. Speeches were heard from HKRW Chairman Peter Davies, RHKYC Commodore John Woo, HKSF President Tong Yui Shing, CYA Secretary-General, Liu Wei Dong and Clean Regatta Ambassadors Enzo Cremers from the Laser Radial fleet and Douglas Leung from the Optimist fleet. 245 sailors competed in the 2019 edition which is a constituent event of the ASAF Youth World Cup. 10 nations raced including China, Cambodia, India, Macau, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong and first-time entries Guam, Myanmar, Norway and Sweden. The eight classes sailed up to 13 races over four days of competition on three race tracks. The classes include 2.4mR, 29er, 420, RS Feva, Laser 4.7, Laser Radial, Optimist and Optimist Green Fleet. 14

Leading the 420 fleet, the winner of the 2017 and 2018 Hong Kong Race Week Optimist fleet, is Duncan Gregor with crew member Matthew Clark. In the Laser 4.7 fleet its India’s Rammilan Yadav leading one point ahead of Hong Kong’s Patrick Ziteng Feng. Day 2 The second full day of racing was even more promising than the first. The wind was set at 16kts in Stanley and, as a result, the Optimist fleet stayed in the more enclosed area around Repulse Bay – the reward being steady wind throughout the racing. In the Optimist Fleet, Norway’s Julia Jacobsen took three bullets out of three races; putting her on top of the ladder and taking the lead from India’s Uma Chouhan. Julia said, “Racing was really good; I got three firsts. At the start of the day it was a bit windy and when we rounded the second mark it blew up a bit but not over 12kts.” Also on the Repulse Bay track, the 2.4mRs and RS Feva’s fleets got four races in. Macau’s FeiChi Cai and YuJun Chen took the lead in the RS Feva’s with an impressive five out of seven first-place finishes. In the 2.4mR which is made up of parasailors, Hong Kong’s Chi Yeung Puk was also leading with five out of seven firsts. The Green Fleet joined for their first day of racing on Day 2. The fleet was made up of 49 sailors from Cambodia, China and Hong Kong. The aim of the fleet is to actively encourage sailors on the racecourse with advice and tips on how to improve their performance so they can move into the main fleets in the coming year. Principal Race Officer Barry Truhol said, “the Green Fleet was located directly in the funnel of Repulse Bay which meant that they had a great sailing breeze for their first sailing experience and all of them came back a little bit excited and quite tired – I think they had a great day.”
Day 1 Principal Race Officer Barry Truhol summed up the first day of racing, “We have been rewarded with absolutely cracking conditions for Day 1. The Optimists were initially scheduled to go out to Stanley, but it was just too windy – above 20kts and white caps – so Race Officer Inge StrompfJepsen brought them into Repulse Bay. The conditions were stunning; we had a nice breeze, great light and no big swells.” By the end of the day in the Optimist fleet, the biggest fleet of the regatta with 96 sailors, the girls were on top with 11 girls in the top 17 and India’s Uma Chouhan in the lead. Out at Po Toi race track, where the Lasers, 420s and 29ers were racing, the conditions were 14 to 20kts with a bit of a short, sharp swell and white caps. It was a little bit on the extreme side for some of the sailors, but everyone still looked as if they were having fun.
Commodore John Woo added, “It’s the biggest Green Fleet yet; it was great to see the kids out developing their skills. I look forward to volunteering with the Green Fleet for the rest of the weekend.”
Feature | Hong Kong Race Week
Out on the track off Po Toi Islands, the performance fleets enjoyed great breeze – 16 to 18kts, a good swell and a fixed East North East breeze. They got all their races in – three each for the Laser 4.7s, Laser Radials and 420s and four for the 29ers. With an epic run Hong Kong’s Malo Kennish and Anatole Martin are in the lead with 8 firsts in 8 races. A mix of nationalities were leading the top of the Laser 4.7 fleet with India’s Rammilan Yadav continuing his lead from Day 1 with two more bullets. He is followed by Hong Kong’s Patrick Ziteng Feng, Sweden’s Axel Wieland in third and Chinese Taipei’s Yu Lin Yang in forth. Day 3 You couldn’t ask for better conditions for day 3; blue skies, 9 to 10kts and a flat sea state across the course! The Optimist race track was set in Stanley Bay. For the initial Optimist start the first flight were a little bit too eager and they had two general recalls. After the second general recall, there was a wind shift, the course was reset and, finally, they got away cleanly. The top three Optimists continued their lead from Day 2 with Norway’s Julia Jacobsen two points ahead of Hong Kong’s Casey Law and India’s Uma Chouhan one point behind in third. In the Green fleet, the sailors had an excellent day, four races, flat water and fun. Putting Hong Kong’s Felix Mulder in the lead followed Vianney Bourrut Lacouture and China’s Chuhan Zhang in third. Principal Race Officer Barry Truhol said, “The conditions were fantastic; sunny, constant breeze and the race courses went without any problem. The sailors came back smiling. For the high-performance craft, they went out again to Po Toi where it was lighter today but there was no swell, and the sailing was exceptionally good. Everyone got in all their races and there were some tired but happy sailors coming back to shore. A good day.” In the Laser Radial fleet, Chinese Taipei’s Hsiu Chu Daniel Huang continued his lead followed by Hong Kong’s Stan Picard. In third, the top female is Stephanie Norton who had a great day notching up 3-1-5 in her races. Norton said, “It was a lot lighter and a little shiftier than yesterday. It was better but also more complicated because yesterday the focus was more on strength and today you had to think a little harder tactically.” Also on the Po Toi race track, in the 420 fleet Eloi Defline and Thibault Minne were in the lead after a continued battle with Duncan Gregor and Matthew Clark. Defline commented on the battle, “The wind and the current were unstable today; it was quite hard to know where to go on the course, and Gregor/Clark were really good as well today. Good racing though we didn’t win the last two today – but we will come back strong tomorrow. In the last two races we messed up our starts and it just got a little nuts and that’s all.” Day 4 As predicted, there was a big breeze for the final day of racing – at its peak, it averaged 20kts with gusts up to 35kts. With such a strong breeze it was decided to send the Green Fleet sailors out to watch the action from the comfort of spectator boats. Due to the stronger conditions the Optimist, RS Feva and 2.4mR race track was based back in Repulse Bay, and the Laser 4.7, Laser Radial, 29er and 420 race track moved to Stanley Bay which was more sheltered. Even with the move of race tracks to the more sheltered areas, there were quite a few capsizes and retirements recorded throughout the day.

The 29er fleet only got one race in before gusts exceeded their class wind limit and they were sent back to base. Hong Kong’s Malo Kennish and Anatole Martin took the win with an impressive 11 bullets out of 13 races.

In the 420 fleet Hong Kong’s Eloi Defline and Thibault Minnie came out four points ahead of Hong Kong’s Duncan Gregor and Matthew Clark after a very close battle that took place over the course of the week, with either team taking the first or second position in every race. Principal Race Officer Barry Truhol commented on racing on the performance track, “We always knew that today would be a challenge. Today was huge. The breeze on both courses was 18 to 20kts; the sailors had very challenging race conditions – they had a short chop, deep chop and gusts up to 35kts. It was extremely challenging for them. There was a little bit of attrition, but they all came through and did a great job.” In the Laser 4.7, Hong Kong’s Patrick Ziteng Feng took the win followed by India’s Rammilan Yadav and Chinese Taipei’s Chi Yu Wu, the first female in the fleet was China’s Xinran Chen. In the Laser Radial fleet, Chinese Taipei’s Hsiu Chu Daniel Huang came in first followed by Hong Kong’s Stan Picard and Hong Kong’s Stephanie Norton. Huang said, “It was tough sailing today but very exciting. I am very happy. The wind was very strong, and I was hiking hard. It was a good day; it’s a great event.”
HKRW RESULTS 2019 RESULT
Holding the number one position in the Optimist fleet since Day 2 and taking the win was Julia Jacobsen. Jacobsen said, “It’s been really fun the past few days. When I accomplish something new, it’s fun. It’s been exciting to see such a big line up of international competitors. This event is really fun and social; I met a lot of new people from other clubs and also overseas sailors from India and China.” The 2.4mR fleet saw parasailor Chi Yueng Puk took the win for the second year running in front of Yuen Wai Foo. In the RS Feva the top two positions were both on 14 points with Hong Kong’s Johan van den Berg and Riccardo Tocco sailing their way to the win in front of Macau’s FeiChi Cai and YuJun Chen on countback. In the Green Fleet which did a total of six races on Friday and Saturday, eight-year-old Felix Mulder took the win. Mulder said, “On Friday it was tough and I capsized and I nearly didn’t want to go sailing. Today we had really good winds and everyone was really determined to sail but it was very windy so nobody sailed. It’s very exciting to win but I also think the other sailors deserve to win. It’s a really fun event and there are sailors from all over and it’s really great.” In closing, Truhol said, “Overall it’s been an excellent Hong Kong Race Week, we’ve had four fantastic race days of competitive racing, and I hope that everyone goes away with good memories and smiles.” The prizegiving was held on Sunday 17 February after racing with Commodore John Woo, Anglo Eastern’s Peter Cremers, Home Affairs Bureau Paul Cheng, Nancy Huang and Frank Pong presenting trophies and medals made by the charity St James Settlement under their Up-cycling Programme. Hong Kong Race Week would not be possible without the tremendous support of the huge volunteer team, with up to 150 volunteers helping out each day we couldn’t run Hong Kong Race Week without you! Thank you!

We had full schedule for all the classes with mixed conditions and a very windy last day. Well done to all the competitors for taking time off school and giving their best in such a great regatta. Thank you also to all the sailors from overseas who chose HKRW this year and we are hoping to see them again next time. A big well done to everyone who contributed for this great international regatta to come together and an even bigger thank you for everyone who played a role on expanding the Green Fleet so rapidly. We had 46 competitors in the Green Fleet this year which is a record breaking number!

or the second year, the Tolo Harbour Regatta was held at Wu Kai Sha Beach near Ma On Shan. The coastal rowing event quickly gained popularity among rowers, who used to row their boats over flat and calm water. The Club was represented at the regatta by 26 adult rowers and eight youth rowers. The conditions for coastal rowing were great with

a blowing crosswind over the 3.8km race course. In the world of coastal rowing, not only do rowers have to row hard and go fast, but they also have to pick their best line with regards to the wind and swell. With the training having taken place at both Middle Island and Kellett Island, our RHKYC rowers showed good skills when handling the big conditions.
Wan Ng, Guy Parsonage, Chris Knollman, Andrew McCabe and Henry Dunlop (cox) were crowned Champion in the Men’s Open Coxed Quad. The two junior crews also claimed the silver and bronze medals in the Junior Coxed Quad. The Women’s Double represented by Audrey Slighton and Michele Lam added a bronze medal for the Club. 2019 will be a busy rowing season, especially for the coastal rowing. Over the first weekend of November, the 2019 World Rowing Coastal Championships will be staged in Victoria Harbour, with RHKYC as the venue partner. Sail Recycling at the Club W O RD S: K A RTA HE A LY
There are many more uses for this abundance of sails!
I would like to ask for more sails to be donated, volunteers to help gather and sort, new ideas for usage, suggestions and projects to step up this Sail Recycle Programme. I would like to expand the scope to include many other yacht clubs, social enterprises and other organisations that are cleaning up coasts. I propose we form a casual committee to test these new waters together.
he used sail recycling bin at Kellett Island Hard Standing is organised by Mr. Karta Healy. Below is a message from Karta to our members asking for assistance in the re-cycling programme. I would like to thank all those that supported my idea of sail recycling, born a decade ago on Kellett Island. One day, while passing by the skip in the Marine Dept, I noticed a large carbon/Kevlar laminate sail, neatly folded up, in said skip. I was horrified to think of how Mother Earth’s belly might ever digest these very tough man-made materials. And why would a sailor ever do that to Mother Earth?! I pulled the sail out of the skip and lugged it to my design studio in Shenzhen. Where it sat for many months in a corner. I finally had the courage to unfurl it in the parking area and take a first stab at it. Over a week or two, it reduced in scale, to be made into various sizes of refuse collection bags for the HK Coastal Cleanup Challenge.
beach cleanup bags and complete-sails to disaster relief teams as temporary shade and shelters. I also designed and made a range of accessories, many of these designs were sold in the old ship shop.
I therefore make an official appeal to RHKYC Members to make a more public commitment to the Planet and lead the changes for cleaner oceans and healthier sailors everywhere. Please email me on karta@me.com

I then began to see how useful these robust sail’s could be, up-cycled into many new products. Replacing leather, PVC, Cordura and more. I then went back to RHKYC and setup a large bin to collect any old sails. This bin quickly overfilled and lately, even our current airplane cargo container fills up regularly.

This is why I wish to ask everyone reading this to find a way to double their efforts, individually and collectively, to reduce waste in every aspect of life, and especially when pursuing our passion for sailing. We must be grateful to share such moments on the water and be more aware of our responsibility to Our Mother’s Oceans.

SailGP Bag
THINKSPORT Airtight Lunch Container with Fork/Spoon
SGP Bag made in polyester. Handles at top and shoulder strap. Pocket with zip at side. Sail Racing and Sail GP logo graphic.
After many years of designing and prototypes, we are excited to announce the launch of the GO2 container.
$580
Unlike many other lunch style boxes, the GO2 container seals off each compartment. You can literally fill each compartment with different colored water, shake it and not have the colors mix. This was no easy feat. But nobody likes having their sandwich soggy because some sort of sauce or juice flowed into that compartment.
SPINLOCK Performance Kneepads NEW performance kneepads – Stretch neoprene impact protection. Lighter-weight. 3 sizes. Pull on.
$399
There are also a few lunch containers that have lids for each compartment. This creates a lot of cleaning and a high probability that lids end up getting lost. The GO2 container features an embedded silicone matrix to seal off each area completely. And finally, we built in our very stylish, ergonomic fork and spoon so that it easily fits into its own compartment. No more forks and spoons getting lost. And it’s just utterly convenient to have a place to store them so that they are not loose during travel.

‘This is a big picture view of the main themes of the history of our maritime region. States and religions change, but a common original culture – where Malay has been the lingua franca for much of the past 1,200 years – continues. Refreshing in its perspective, it is short enough to be accessible whilst well supported by sources.’ – Anwar Ibrahim It puts current claims over the region’s seas into the perspective of two millennia of sailing and trading connecting east and west, north and south. This event is free of charge to members and their guests but please book online or by emailing social@rhkyc.org.hk, so we know how many to expect.

Siduri Wine Dinner Compass Room | Thursday 4 April
Events | Promotions
Siduri – the Babylonian Goddess of Wine Founder Adam Lee and Dianna Novy left their native Texas and moved to the Sonoma County wine country for the dream of making great wines of their own. They spent years working at small, family-owned wineries and using any and all free time learning everything they could about growing grapes and making wine. And it paid off – the first Siduri Wines release, in 1994, was met with great critical success. Today, Siduri’s breadth and depth of Pinot Noirs is truly unique. They specialize in cool-climate Pinot Noir, producing only single-vineyard, single-variety wine from twenty vineyards stretching from Santa Barbara to the Willamette Valley. Mendel Wine Dinner Compass Room | Thursday 18 April Mendel Winery is a relatively new Argentine winery that was founded in 2003 by one of Argentina’s most respected and experienced winemakers, Roberto de la Mota and architect Anabelle Sielecki. Mendel is the first name of Anabelle’s father. The Sielecki family’s historic 1928 vineyard was transformed into the respected estate it is today. Anabelle honoured her father, a hardworking immigrant and successful businessman, by putting his first name on the label. Roberto has led Argentina’s winemaking movement toward world-class production with his French winemaking experience. The finesse and elegance in his wines are revered and respected. Their partnership has proven to be incredibly successful.
