Commodore’s Message It’s April with the Easter Break for most! The COVID-19 virus outbreak has limited a number of sailing events, but not our spirits. I hope you’re all keeping happy and healthy and please be rest assured that the Club is doing its best to promote hygiene and to protect the health and safety of members, staff and guests. Visiting one of our clubhouses is a good option to get some fresh sea breeze and great food.
To celebrate the International Women’s Day, the St. James’s Place Ladies Helm Day was successfully organized on 8 March. 43 boats over seven classes took part, with 55 women helms and crews coming together to join the celebrations in recognition of women’s achievements worldwide. Commodore John Woo

With the COVID-19 suspension of schools continued, Boase Cohen & Collins Inter-School Sailing Festival was deferred from the 14 and 15 March weekend. We are hoping to be able to reschedule for a later date before the season finish. We were fortunate to be able continue with the 4th Harbour Regatta which was held again in Victoria Harbour on 15 March. This event was another success with 104 competitors from universities and rowing clubs. RHKYC obtained six medals in eight categories. Well done RHKYC Rowing team! That night we also had a very special 175th Anniversary Dinner marking 175 years since the First Hong Kong Regatta in the Harbour. April is another busy month indeed for the sailing section as we head towards the end of the month! We will host our last of the pursuit races – the Buy Association Tomes Cup on Saturday 25 April then follow by the Nations’ Cup on the Sunday. I hope to see all of our sailors with all sorts of costumes out on the racetrack on the Nations’ Cup. On the paddling side, the Club’s dragon boat team will have to prepare for all sorts of races leading up to the Dragon Boat Festival on 25 June. Let’s wish them good luck as our Dragon Boat team always excels in the races. Please be reminded that the Club’s 2020 Electoral General Meeting will take place on Wednesday, 10 June 2020 at 1830hrs in the Compass Room. There are seven posts on General Committee for which elections are necessary – including Commodore, Vice Commodore and Honorary Secretary. I would like to invite our Life and Full Members of two years in standing to put forward for considerations by the Nominating Committee their nominations. Nominations must be received before Wednesday, 15 April 2020 1800hrs by email to commodore@rhkyc.org.hk.
APRIL 2020 AHOY! |

The Bridge
At the time of writing, the A to A Easter Offshore Race 2020, a replacement for the deferred 2020 Rolex China Sea Race is in full swing. This 400nm race will take boats from Hong Kong to Pratas Reef then to Pedro Blanco before finishing back in Hong Kong waters. I am delighted to see some sailors still being very supportive to our offshore races and gaining off shore sailing experience at this difficult time where our boat cannot sail to the Philippines due to COVID-19 travel restrictions.
General Manager’s Message
The Bridge
Despite all the uncertainty surrounding the effects of the Covid-19 virus throughout the world, we strive to continue to provide our members and their guests with a safe and relaxing ambiance in all outlets at all three of our clubhouses. Feedback from members has been really encouraging and it has been wonderful to see so many old and new faces around the Club, continuing to use their Club for sporting, social gathering and dining activities. The Club has always been your home away from home and given all of the travel restrictions that are now in force, why not consider us as your venue of choice for a #staycation (or would that better be described as a #clubcation)! That said, I would like to give a polite reminder that in order to keep the Club a safe and healthy place for everyone, we ask that until further notice, Members and their guests are in full compliance with the General Committee’s directive that with effect from 17 March any member or guest, who has returned (or had a household member return) from countries outside of Hong Kong (with the exception of Macau and Taiwan) does not come to any of the Club premises for a period of 14 days after his or her arrival back into Hong Kong. April is always a busy month with a full calendar of various activities and sporting events. As always the Commodore will concentrate of the sporting events in his message, and to avoid duplication, I will concentrate on more of the social events. Nations’ Cup, of course, is one of the most exciting ones filled with fantastic fun and costumes! Even if you’re not sailing, bring your family and friends to have fun with Dim Sum and Pizza cooking classes, free cotton candy and ice cream for children. There will be cuisine from around the world at different outlets throughout the day, so mark your dairy and see you in your nation’s costume that Sunday. By the time you receive this copy of Ahoy!, there will be full details that day’s activities to review online. With all the travel restriction in place at present, let us bring the world to you instead. If you prefer to enjoy great food and wine under the stars, then the rooftop is the place for you on Thursday 9 April when we will be hosting a wine dinner to mark the opening of the European White Asparagus Season! The White Asparagus Promotion will then continue in the Compass Room from 10 April to 31 May. Full details of both are available on pages 32. We’ve had wine, Champagne and sake dinners aplenty over the years. Now for the first time, in my memory at least, we will be hosting a sherry dinner here at the Club! Sherry has run though the veins of five generations of the Gonzalez family since 1835 when the pioneering 23 year old Manuel Maria Gonzalez left his banking career for more noble pursuits. We only have limited availability, a maximum of 24 places in fact, at this dinner which will be held in the Gun Room where members and guests will have the opportunity to learn the story behind this small family business, whilst being treated to some fabulous sherry wines and an excellent matching menu. On 23 April we bring you the best that Bordeaux’s Right Bank has to offer. Bordeaux enjoys the distinction of being the largest AOC region in France, and this can be attributed to its great diversity of high-quality terroirs. Rather than selecting wines from just one Chateau, we will bring you a selection of some of the best wines from all across the Right Bank. Easter is coming up this month and as always we have a series of events to celebrate at both Kellett Island and at Middle Island. For all the information you need to know including full details of all the events mentioned above please see pages 31 to 36. As regards events and promotions, last but not least, we’ve pulled out all the stops and come up with some fantastic deals for our Junior Members to encourage even greater participation in the social life of the Club. Please see page 29 for details. In what have been extremely difficult times in Hong Kong recently, the Club has been incredibly supportive of all staff and on their behalf I would just like to pass on everyone’s thanks and appreciation to the Club and its members. However, I would also like to say a huge thank you to all the staff who in return have shown fantastic loyalty and dedication to the Club, its members and their fellow colleagues through their unstinting efforts to maintain business as usual for the entire Yacht Club family.

The Pat Loseby Room is a multi-purpose space, the table being used for meetings of Club committees and management, so must be booked through Reception (up to three days in advance: 2832 2817). From time to time, the Club has played matches against other clubs, the most recent being a three-way effort with ABC and HHYC in the excellent 3-table Hong Kong Club room last October. There was a home match against ABC on 18 March, and more are planned with other clubs. The three-way tournament at HK Club will take place twice a year. These are great social events where participation, not ability, is the aim.
In 1983, the Club’s new snooker table had an auspicious inauguration in the dedicated room located off the Bistro, when then World champion Steve Davis played an exhibition match on it. He was in Hong Kong with fellow professionals to play in the long-defunct Camus Masters tournament.
What we need now is more players; surely, in a club with 6,000 active members, there must be more than a few people who like to play this great game. The larger the pool of players, the easier to raise teams for matches, and the more playing partners for us either in evenings or daytime. Perhaps members may arrange internal competitions or a league; anything is possible. And, the more active we are, the more support we can expect from the Club. There are no formalities; just get in touch.

52 boats enjoyed some beautiful sunshine and fresh air sailing in Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour as they competed in the BuyAssociation HKRNVR Memorial Vase on 29 February. Organised by Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club, the race forms part of the Club’s Top Dog Trophy Series which combines the season’s pursuit races to crown a winning yacht or ‘Top Dog’ for the year. 8

HKRNVR Memorial Vase 2020 his event is held in honour of the Hong Kong Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve (HKRNVR), a defense force originally formed by members of the Club. The trophy was gifted in memory of all HKRNVR amateur sailors who engaged in regular patrol duties around the waters of Hong Kong to help ensure its security. With 6 to 8kts consistent easterly, Race Officer Brenda Davies opted for a Hung Hom start line and a course taking the fleet into Hong Kong’s Eastern Approaches using a club mark at Junk Bay as the windward mark before returning into the eastern end of Hong
Kong’s Victoria Harbour to satisfy the requirement of the HKRNVR deed of gift. A succession of starts based on RHKATI ratings began with the Pandora fleet at 1400hrs and culminated oven an hour later with Big Boats Ambush then FreeFire. The later starters then pursued the slower fleets trying to overtake them by the target finish time of 1630hrs. With the breeze building to 9 to 10 kts across the course, the fleet started to consolidate as the race entered the tricky multiple inner loop section APRIL 2020 AHOY! |

remain strong in first and second place in the Top Dog Series overall ranking while Ruffian Victory 9 has climbed from fifth to third place.
This year, a numeral pennant system was introduced to help racers identify where they should finish. Once boats are into the final repeated loops of the course, it can be tricky to know at which point to stop racing. So when the course was shortened at the third rounding of Gate Buoy, in addition to the usual S (shorten course) flag, numeral pennant 3 was also flown by the finish boat. Those boats who understood the signal, finished and were first back to the Club, whilst others thought they perhaps should do an extra loop before cruising home.
Never could we have a successful event without our dedicated volunteers, a big thank you to the race management and safety teams of: Elizabeth Seymour-Jones, Jennifer Parks, Edoardo Tocco, Paul Kan, Brett Rohrsheim and Niclas Rydin.
Ruffian Victory 9 led for most of the race before being overtaken by Dragon Dragonfly on the second Dock Buoy to Gate Buoy loop. Dragonfly went on to take the win for the day, with Victory 9 coming in second over the line. The BuyAssociation HKRNVR is the third race of the annual Top Dog Series which also includes the BuyAssociation Lipton Trophy and the Solaris Yacht Around the Island Race. Coastal fog around the harbour lifted early and with a light South to Southeast breeze and Race Officer Dave Norton elected to send the Class boats on Southerly grouped courses. Dave said “...the day began slowly with under 6kts of breeze out of 150 degrees, dictating a one hour short race for the first race of the day. The breeze eventually kicked in a bit more and the Race Committee saw the opportunity to mix things up a bit for the teams by setting a longer 10 mile course for some of the Classes, enabling everyone to finish around the same time at about 1600hrs. It’s always so pleasing to see so many teams turn out for this great women’s event – a great day out on the water celebrating International Women’s Day.” APRIL 2020 AHOY! |

In celebration of International Women’s Day, the St. James’s Place Ladies Helm Day was held on Sunday 8 March on the waters of Victoria Harbour. With the regular skippers taking a back seat for the day, the Club ran the Ladies Helm Day for the Class boats; Etchells, Dragons, Flying Fifteens, Ruffians, Pandoras and Impalas. Additionally, a selection of non-Class boats; a mixed division comprising of the Magic 25, J/80 and Flying Tiger classes joined and for the first time raced together under the ATI rating band.

Sailing is one of the few sports where men and women can compete side by side across a wide range of classes, however due to strength requirements and weight demands, men usually dominate yacht racing, with the tendency for the men to be the skipper and take charge. This event encourages female sailors of all experience levels to take part, with no restrictions on the rest of the crew’s gender or in fact gender ratio – the only requirement being that the helm must be female. Magic 25 owner Rachel Yip helmed Herman Wong’s Kiasu this year in the ATI Division. Rachel agreed that men have the physical advantage in sailing, “Guys tend to be physically stronger and more powerful, more capable of doing faster tacks or gybes. In comparison female sailors are more attentive to details; they trim precisely, so it would be good to have
14

a better balance of male and female crew on board to complement these traits.” Teresa Poon from Ruffian Rainbow Chaser agreed women could be better at the helm since it involves less strength: “relatively speaking the job as helmsman is a less physical job, it is not a feat of strength, but rather a process of precision steering and decision making, so less of a gender difference.” Dragon Kam Loong skipper Josephine Tse started sailing in dinghies, she said female sailors can compete equally : “as a small sized female sailor, I needed to practice hard for better timing during maneuvers, well timed and precise actions are far less labor intensive than dealing with fully powered mistimed situations. “However she agreed females deserve equal opportunity in sailing,
“no matter your age or gender, sailing is the kind of sport that makes you a better person, encouraging team work, teaching you how to work along with people from all cultural background or age to achieve a goals together.” Josephine would love to see more women joining sailing in the future. With 43 women’s helms taking part, it was encouraging to also see overall more women participating as crew members this year. While some of the yachts saw two females aboard including the skipper, the best turn out of the day belonged to Hilda Loong racing Ruffian Miss Piggy, her team comprising 4 women aboard. In a display of racing at its best, the results summed up a great competitive day of close racing. Sailing a Magic 25 in the hotly
Panopae taking first place on count back. In one of the wonderful achievement stories of the day, first time helm Chan Yuen Mei from Impala Taurus, took two race wins to capture the overall prize for the class, while also competing in the Ladies Helm Day for her first time. Rosemary Merz, sailing with her husband as crew, showed great form racing Flying Fifteen Forty Forte to take first place over the
youngest helm of the day, Demelsa Williams on Tchaikoffsky who placed second overall in the Flying Fifteen Class. BuyAssociation Tomes cup The last of the season’s pursuit race will take place with BuyAssociation Tomes Cup on Saturday afternoon on 25 April. Once the results have been calculated we will be announcing the winner of the Top Dog Series 2019-2020 at the Tomes Cup prizegiving on the main lawn.
Originally, the Cup was donated by the Hong Kong Sugar Refiners in 1880 and was won on 1 April that year by Dora’s husband, Mr. William Howell Forbes sailing his boat Naomi. It then passed into the possession of the Forbes family whose family business of W.H. Russell and Company was a well-known Canton trading house founded in 1830 and subsequently found its way into the possession of the Tomes family.
COURTESY OF THE LATE FRANK HYDES
The A to A Easter Offshore Race is a replacement for the deferred 2020 Rolex China Sea Race. This 400nm race will take boats from Hong Kong to Pratas Reef, Pedro Blanco before finishing back in Hong Kong waters. The race is run under the auspices of the Royal Ocean Racing Club (RORC) and the RHKYC Offshore Prescriptions. HKPN, IRC Racer 2 and 3 will be starting at 1400hrs on Thursday 9 April with the remaining boats starting at 1100hrs Friday 10 April just off Kellett Island, please do come down to the Club to wish them well on their offshore race.
HISTORY OF THE TOMES CUP This trophy has an interesting history. It was presented to the Club in 1969 by Mr. Alec Tomes whose father was one of the founders of Shewan Tomes and Co., a well-known local Hong Kong firm. The Cup was presented in the memory of Mrs. Dora Delano Forbes who was Mr. Tomes’ godmother and also an aunt of US President, Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
The Cup was renamed the Tomes Cup by Noel Croucher (1891-1980) who was a stalwart of the Club and served as Commodore from 1941 to 1949.

ith the start of the season comes the annual Royal X Dragon Boat Bai Sun ceremony to awaken the Dragons from their slumber. In most years it is the weather that can be cause of concern, will it be a freezing winters day or blessed with one of our more

However, the team was not to be deterred and with a few extra health and safety measures in place there was a solid turn out for the ceremony. Kicking off was the sacrifice to the Dragons with our special guests Grace Leung from the General Committee and Rowing Captain Guy Parsonage who alongside our new Women’s Captain Nicola Kwan, Coach Lister Woo and the Men’s captain Gianni Aprea led the way for the rest of team and guests to show our respect in offering incense to the Dragons. After making our sacrifices and showing respect it was time to awaken the Dragons by giving them their eyesight, taste and power through dotting of their eyes which was carried out by our Special guests and Captains. It was then the turn for this season’s new joiners and
the excited kids of paddlers to take part in the bowing of the alive Dragons with seasoned paddlers filling what spaces were left in the boats. This is when the entire crew paddle a short distance from the shore and then sprint towards it bowing to the onlookers onshore three times. All that was left was to cut the pig and enjoy some beverages and each other’s company as new and old team members as well as family members got to know each other better. With Hong Kong facing one challenge after another and given the current circumstances there remains uncertainty over which races will go ahead this season. Despite the lack of certainty around races training continues in earnest in the hope that there is some good fortune around the corner for Hong Kong. It is long overdue so hopefully there will be plenty of races in the coming months for Royal X to prove themselves once again before the Dragons are put back into their slumber.

ne of the key events to the Outrigger season is the VRC race series. This is a set of 10 races held early each month through the year with different themes and focus as the season changes. Each race has a long course and short course. The season kicks off with Race 1 ‘Christmas Burn Off’ where we get to see what the competition looks like for the year. This race was held in early January with little wind and quite warm conditions, and a course heading from VRC to Magazine Island and back. From the total of 50 racers, there were 12 from RHKYC – in the race with 3rd and 4th in the Ladies OC1 and 4th, 5th ,6th, 8th in the Mens OC1. Our girls in the OC2 won their division and its great to see some of our ocean rowers joining. Race 2 is always more fun since it’s around Valentine’s Day and is known as ‘Cupids Race’, the course this year representing a heart. Paddlers are either the total catastrophe, DINKS, Hot dates, or Blind dates (lucky draw!).
Leading the charge for our ladies in the OC1 was Stephanie Tovoli Our ladies in 2nd, with a 4th, 7th and 8th. In the men’s we had nine attendees it was a repeat of race 1 in the top 10 with 4th, 5th ,6th , and 8th, although more closely battled than race1. Our coastal rowers were in force, with two ocean rower 2s and one ocean rower 4 making an appearance and the Ocean Rower 4 getting the fastest time of the day. To finish it off we had our OC2 ladies, surf ski 1 and a racer on the short course.
WINTER
With 64 racers, 31 from RHKYC across OC1, OC2, OC6, SS 1, Ocean rowing 2, and Ocean rowing 4, it’s a big group with a lot of fun, and fortunately we had some wind to make it more exciting.
The next race is the Pray for Surf Kamanu Downwind from Shek o to VRC and we are sure we will have just as strong turn out from the OC section having some serious paddling fun together.
14th century castle, West coast of Scotland. Wonderful sea views. 1 hour from Glasgow airport.

The paddle sports ‘Taster’ sessions have encouraged a few people to come and try outrigger canoe paddling for the first time. The Club has OC1 and OC2 canoes which can be a great introduction to the awesome sport of outrigger canoeing. The 90 minute session includes a strong overview and focus on the fundamentals of the paddle stroke technique as well as safety.
SUP Stand up paddle board paddling is a popular outdoors activity suitable for all fitness levels. It can be low intensity or high intensity depending upon your own personal goals. But ultimately, SUP is a fantastic fun way to get out on the water and enjoy the scenic waters around Middle Island. SUP is also a great introduction to the world of paddle sports because the mechanics of the paddle stroke transfer in to both dragon boat and outrigger canoe paddling.
As usual, the outriggers have been up early and on the water before the sun rises every Tuesday and Thursday morning and then backing it up every Saturday with long endurance paddling. No one session can be called the same. The weather and climate has been changing weekly. Paddlers have endured diverse conditions ranging from single digit temperatures, strong north easterlies and one and a half metre swells out the back of Round Island to calm, warm sunny mornings. Never a dull moment in paddling! COURSES The next OC introduction courses will be on Thursday 26 March (KI 1900 to 2100) and Saturday 28 March (MI 1300hrs to 1700hrs); and Thursday 23 April (KI 1900hrs to 2100hrs) and Saturday 25 April (MI 1300hrs to 1700hrs). https://www.rhkyc.org.hk/
Dragon Boat Increased stroke count and high intensity interval training has been an important focus at training for the first quarter of this year. Building solid base fitness levels for the entire team is the first goal. Secondly, throw a tyre off the back of the boat and you are adding resistance in to the sets that becomes the perfect scenario for strength building. Despite many local Hong Kong and international dragon boat races being cancelled due to Covid 19, the team is not bowing down and continues to train on water and on land despite these challenges. COURSES Dragon Boat Steering Clinic (TBC) https://www.rhkyc.org.hk/
Cross Training
– Towards a stronger paddler
SUP Basics (10yrs+); is an introductory course run by the paddle sports coach that will teach you the fundamentals of SUP paddling. Topics such as the wind and water and it’s affects on paddling, turning the board, maintaining a straight course, balance and positioning, and coordination and control will be learnt and practiced. You will also gain an understanding of safety considerations whilst navigating the waterways around Middle Island. https://www.rhkyc.org.hk/
Many paddlers will know that one of the best things you can do to improve your performance on the water is by further developing your skills such as fitness, strength, flexibility and endurance in a variety of different sports and activities on or off the water. High intensity workouts such as concept 2 rowing machine sessions as part of a cross training regime has the potential to give paddlers ‘an edge’ over the competition. RowFit is a great new fitness concept developed and run by RHKYC Rowing Coaches at Kellett. The rowing ergo offers a wider range of movement patterns; RHKYC Head Coach Ben Rowe says, ‘’it also adds good variety to your training programme and builds robustness!’’ Row Fit is an intensive 45 minute blast combining the whole body workout of the rowing machine with core and weight training intervals. There will be music, experienced coaches on hand and large doses of adrenalin.

Skywatch Meteos is an anemometer-thermometer which accurately measures the force of the wind regardless of its direction. Skywatch Meteos is powered by two replaceable LR6 batteries. The display is made to the tenth of a unit up to 99.9, then to the unit. A thread under the device allows it to be attached to a photo tripod. Measurement of the perceived temperature: As you know, low temperatures are dangerous for the human body. But do you know that the wind strongly influences the actual temperatures felt by your body? Everywhere you go, the Skywatch Meteos instantly gives you the temperature felt by your body and prevents you from getting frostbite and hypothermia. Calculation: The perceived temperature is calculated taking into account the air temperature and the wind speed. In the event of wind, it gives an indication of the heat loss if the temperature is below 37°C and of the heat increase if the temperature is above 37°C.

New Marine Department regulations for use of a mooring Marine
he Marine department has introduced new regulations for the use of private moorings. The changes will affect members who have their own private mooring and members who are allocated Club moorings. These affect all newly laid moorings, from 22 of June 2018, and existing moorings that are subject to a change of vessel size. This will include all our moorings in Causeway Bay Our other moorings will also be affected as well. 1. The main change in the regulations is that permission will only be given for newly laid moorings (new moorings) and existing moorings that are subject to a change of vessel size (altered moorings) in that the permission to use the private mooring will only be granted for a period of three years. After this time the mooring must be re-applied for by the user or the Club. If the mooring user has not accumulated any penalty points (see next paragraph) this permission will be granted for another three years. 2. Another change is that a system of penalty points will be introduced for new moorings or altered moorings. Points will be given for the following infringements of the mooring use, classed as minor irregularity, major irregularity and unsettled payment of the mooring account. Minor irregularities include the following: • the private mooring is not properly maintained, e.g. deformation, swelled, holed; • the private mooring has its mooring number obliterated/ defaced; and • the private mooring has other attachment other than those specified in the Conditions. Major Irregularities: • the private mooring is out of the approved position; • the private mooring is submerged; • the private mooring is missing; • the private mooring is secured more than the number of vessel allowed to be moored, and • the private mooring is moored with a vessel exceeding the specified maximum dimensions. For minor irregularities the following notices will be issued: • Improvement notice. 1 point incurred. • Important notice. 3 points incurred. • Final notice. 5 points incurred. For major irregularities the following notices will be issued: • Important notice. 3 points incurred. • Final notice. 5 points incurred. If the situation is not rectified then a De-registration Notice will be issued. This incurs 10 points. This gives a total of 19 points for minor irregularities and 18 points for major irregularities. If a mooring holder has 16 points or above the permission to have the mooring will be cancelled.
3. The will also be points deducted for non payment of the mooring invoice after the 14 days payment period. • Issue a reminder notice. 1 point incurred. • Issue important notice. 3 points incurred. • Issue final notice. 5 points incurred. • Finally if the invoice is still not paid there will be a De-registration Notice issued. (For individual mooring holders the payment invoice is sent every three months. For Clubs the invoice is send every month and we at RHKYC arrange payment on receipt of the invoice.) 4. An inspection of the mooring will be undertaken when an application to renew the permission for a further three years is applied for. Should there be irregularities with the mooring the irregularity point score will be added to any points already accumulated. Should this come to a total of 16 or above then permission will not be given for the application. 5. It should be noted that points from non payment and points from irregularities will be cumulative. 6. Existing moorings will not be subject to the points system but however will be subject to penalties as follows: Meanwhile, for any permission which is not subject to the Points System, to enhance the transparency of MD’s enforcement action against irregularities or breaches of conditions, MD will, with effect from 22 June 2018, follow the enforcement protocol (with no point accrual) as follows: (a) if any minor irregularity is found, MD will issue an Improvement Notice. If the irregularity is not rectified, MD will then issue an Important Notice, then a Final Notice, and eventually a De-registration Notice (at which point the permission will be cancelled); (b) if any major irregularity is found, MD will issue an Important Notice, and then a Final Notice, and eventually a De-registration Notice (at which point the permission will be cancelled); and (c) if the PM owner has failed to pay the PM fees, MD will first issue a Reminder Notice for Overdue Payment, then an Important Notice for Overdue Payment, then a Final Notice for Overdue Payment and eventually a De-registration Notice (at which point the permission will be cancelled).
The new mooring regulations will affect the Club and members in several ways. All the mooring contract with members will have to be renewed to incorporate the new time limit on the mooring being allowed to be laid. Whilst the compliance of most of the new regulations will be the responsibility of the Club members will be required to refrain for allowing another vessel to use their mooring without the clearance of the club’s marine office. Members will also not be allowed to have more than one vessel on the mooring. Full details can be found at: https://www.mardep.gov.hk/en/forms/pdf/private_mooring_ps.pdf

Dubai Offshore Sailing Club I just wanted to give my recommendation for the Dubai Offshore Sailing Club. I visited in December and was warmly welcomed. I arrived on a regatta day and I was offered to be fixed up for a sail. I had to decline as I had my granddaughters with me, and needed to look after them. A small club compared to HK, but cosy, friendly and fully operational. The food is plentiful and good, and very important for Dubai they have a liquor licence! Cheers – Jeremy M Barr B310J

Obituary Club Lines
Henry James Kaye, 83 years of age, passed away peacefully on 7 March 2020 in Phuket, Thailand. A larger than life, spectacular and one-of-a-kind character, Henry lived life to the fullest. A hero during the Malayan Emergency, a teatrader in Sri Lanka, a watch salesman in Switzerland and an entrepreneur in Hong Kong and Thailand, Henry was one of the world’s true adventurers and raconteurs. A legendary member of the sailing community, Henry won titles across the globe, captained the Hong Kong Olympic Yachting Team in 1968, promoted yacht racing across Asia and was a stalwart member of the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club. He sailed his last race at 81 years old, and even then had no intention of stopping. We will remember Henry as one of life’s originals. Always the first to help those less fortunate, he was a pillar of forthright honesty, selflessness and good (at times outrageous) humour. He is a true friend and inspiration to countless people around the world. An exceptional and much-loved father, husband, grandfather, brother and uncle, Henry is survived by his three children Stella Whiffin, Martin Kaye and Anna Kaye, his ex-wives Janet Kaye and Maria Kaye, son-in-law Sam Whiffin, his grandchildren Natasha, Samantha, Francesca and Max Whiffin, his sister Carole Seigne and his nephews and niece John, Michael, Patrick, Timothy and Jane Seigne. Henry has left an enormous void in our lives, and will never be forgotten. In his memory, we vow to live life as Henry would – with a spring in our steps and a twinkle in our eyes. Henry was Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club Vice Commodore 19861988, Rear Commodore (Sailing) 1984-1986, and also served on General Committee (1984-1988), Sailing Committee (1984-1986), Balloting Committee (1984-1988) and also the China Sea Race Committee (1986).
Amendment of Bye-Laws General Committee approved the following new Bye-Law which comes into force as of 21 February 2020: 4.23 Promotion of Good Hygiene
