Commodore’s Message

The Bridge

The Kellett Island Development Project has been a source of frustration for many members over the last few years. There have been the meetings disturbed by the noise of jack hammers, the temporary loss of the bowling facilities, the times members have come to the Club wanting to wow their guests with the harbour view from the Bistro only to find it blocked off, the need to walk through the boatyard in a swimming costume to get to the pool from the temporary Commodore Robert Stoneley changing rooms, the long wait 會長史東禮 for approvals, the trek to get to toilets… for many members though one of the real grievances was the fact that we stopped holding our annual Regatta Ball. For years this was one of THE great events on the Hong Kong social calendar and we had seemingly turned our backs on it. As a result, even though the completion of the Project was delayed, coming into this year the General Committee was determined that we wouldn’t see another go by without a Regatta Ball. With the new central kitchen and Main Deck now open, Club management were therefore tasked with re-launching the event, making it truly exceptional and in doing so making use as many of our facilities as possible. With a boxing match (!), mermaids, magicians, jugglers, food stations located all over the club, bands and dancing galore, fortune tellers, seemingly endless champagne, a huge tent that seated all 652 participants for a sumptuous meal… let’s just say they didn’t disappoint! What a night – while I impressed myself by lasting until 0530hrs, hat’s off to the 77 people who made the 0700hrs survivors photo!! From the iconic Club social event to the iconic Club sailing one was just a matter of days. This year the Turkish Airlines Around the Island Race saw 230 boats, crewed by over 1,400 competitors gather in Victoria Harbour before setting off from two set lines over 22 staggered starts. The logistics behind all this were impressive and on behalf of all participants I want to extend a heartfelt thanks to everyone involved in helping out; the poor people stuck in support boats in the cold and rain deserve a special mention – we really couldn’t do it with you. Also deserving a special note are Foo Yuen-wai, who was not only the first

8

| DECEMBER 2017 AHOY!

para-sailor to enter the race but was also sailing the smallest boat in the fleet (a 2.4mR) and managed to end up finishing 7th overall on corrected time. Another notable achievement was that of Sean Law who, at 77 days-old, became the youngest ever competitor. You’ll have to wait until the next edition of Ahoy! for the details about what actually happened during the race as I’m running out of space! While pretty much everyone else was sailing round the Island, I was in Central laying a wreath on behalf of the Club at the annual Remembrance Sunday commemoration. This is a relatively new tradition for us but the need to remember the sacrifices made by others on our behalf, including many Club members, and our connection to the history of Hong Kong are things I feel strongly about. This ceremony is a very moving one and, if you have never participated, I really recommend it to you next year. Moving on, at the time of writing we are looking forward to the rowing and paddling version of the Around the Island Race to be held on 26 November. With the outriggers starting at Middle Island as normal, the coastal rowing boat start has been relocated from Middle Island to Kellett Island this year to accommodate all the entries. While not yet hitting the scale of the sailing event, this year we have over 50 crews, many of which are from overseas and include a number of world champions. Also coming up later this month are the 29er Hong Kong Open and the Zhik 29er Worlds which we are hosting at Middle Island. I would like to give a warm welcome to all the competitors flying into Hong Kong for these events. We already have 18 yachts from six countries signed up for the 29th edition of the Club’s flagship offshore event: the Rolex China Sea Race. With the entry deadline not until 23 February, we are sure to receive more. In closing, a couple of updates; the last phase of the Kellett Island Development project is still progressing well, with the rebuilding of the west wall of the Bistro/new function rooms now largely complete the contractors have started removing the internal propping and the focus is already moving onto M&E works in some areas. Elsewhere in the Club, we have been conducting a review of the Boatyard to identify opportunities to enhance the operations and develop an operating model for a future in which some of the skills we need are increasingly hard to hire. More on this in a later issue. Busy times! And I haven’t even mentioned the Dragon Pacific Rim Interport, the Hong Kong Rowing Championships, Middle Island Master’s Regatta or preparations for the arrival of the Volvo Ocean Race!!

General Manager’s Message

From a social point of view, December is always the busiest month of the year. There are 24 club events packed into the Christmas Brochure, plus we are already receiving a lot of banqueting bookings as members entertain their families, friends and colleagues at both Kellett Island and Middle Island. If you haven’t booked up already, please do so quickly to avoid disappointment.

The main Christmas highlights are of course Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day, so please do ensure to book now if you haven’t already. New Year’s Eve at Kellett Island was a sell out in only a matter of days. And of course, Carols around the Tree on Christmas Eve (including the Yacht Club’s own version of the 12 Days of Christmas) is a fabulous occasion and the perfect way to start the holidays in earnest. Looking ahead to 2018, the Club is putting on a programme of events to help celebrate the Volvo Ocean Race Stopover in Hong Kong so please do read more about that on page 26. The cooler weather now makes it perfect to be outdoors enjoying the new Main Deck and the Bistro Terrace – not to forget Shelter Cove and Middle Island of course. Whilst on the subject of the cooler weather, this time of year also sees more members making the most of it by bringing their dogs with them to Middle Island and Shelter Cove. Dogs are certainly welcome, but can I please remind all members to keep your dogs on a leash and under control at all times and only in the designated areas at the clubhouses, and that guests are not permitted to bring dogs at weekends or public holidays. Your cooperation is very much appreciated. We all look forward to welcoming you to the Club over the festive season.

With so much happening we had to start the Christmas celebrations early with the RHKYC Charity Foundation’s Annual Christmas Party for the Red Cross Hospital Schools taking place at the end of November. This is always one of the highlights of the season and puts everyone involved in the right mood for the festive period ahead. We’ll share photos in the next issue of Ahoy! This year we have two events on 2 December; the Children’s Gingerbread House Decorating (which we think is sometimes just as much fun if not more so for the parents as it is for the children) as well as the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony later that night. The latter is a new tradition we began last year and which was very popular and one that we hope will quickly become the perfect way for members and their friends to start the Christmas season. We hope to see you there for mulled wine, mince pies and Carols from the Salvation Army Band and Choir. One week later on 9 December again we have two events; the Children’s Christmas Party is in the morning ending at 1230hrs and right after that you can head over to the Main Lawn for the Christmas Fair where we have around 20 stalls (all small businesses owned by Club members) and you can shop till you drop – conveniently on your Club account! Also at this year’s fair we have two workshops, where you can make your own Christmas wreath or a mosaic tree ornament.

The Bridge

So the Regatta Ball has been and gone for another year and it was as though our signature social event had never actually been away for three years. It was fabulous to once again be able to run this event for members and to see all the new facilities at the Kellett Island Clubhouse adding even more variety to the activities on offer to help entertain everyone through till the Survivors photograph at 0700hrs. By this time next year the Development Project will have General Manager Mark Bovaird been completed and plans are 總經理布馬克 already afoot to make the ball even bigger and better next year. Mark your diaries now for Saturday 10 November 2018; we guarantee you won’t want to miss the grand re-opening Regatta Ball.

會長通訊

The Bridge

10

| DECEMBER 2017 AHOY!

The 2017 Volvo China Coast Regatta kicked off on Thursday 12 October with a welcome party on the Main Lawn at Kellett Island, which saw race crew getting into the spirit of the party thanks to free-flow Sanger Champagne and Peroni beer. With Tropical Storm Khanun approaching Hong Kong and some predictions for a typhoon signal 3 to 8 being hoisted on the Sunday, an update was sent out to all competitors that Race Officer Inge Strompf-Jepsen would consider, under CCR Sailing Instruction 5.3, to run three races for IRC Racing and two races for IRC Premier on Friday, Day 1 of racing.

he IRC divisions descended on Middle Island Clubhouse on the Friday morning before making their way out to the race track, located southeast of Lamma Island. Racing started in a northerly breeze of 8 to 10kts that dropped throughout the day. Two windward/leewards and an island course were held for IRC Racer 0, 1, 2, 3 with the IRC Premier having a windward/leeward followed by an island course. After three races and two bullets in their first races of the day, Marcel Liedt’s Ker 46 Zannekin, IRC Racer 0 division, was ahead in her fleet. Zannekin was followed by Shawn Kang’s Ker 46 Lighthorse Alpha Plus and Philippines entry, Ernesto Echauz’s TP52, Standard Insurance Centennial.

| DECEMBER 2017 AHOY!

Amongst several individual recalls throughout the day, the most noteworthy coming in the second IRC Racer 0 start when an individual recall against several boats saw only Sam Chan’s TP52 FreeFire initially turn back. Frank Pong’s RP76 Jelik and Wang Bin’s Cookson 50 UBOX continued to sail on despite several radio calls before eventually turning back to restart; giving both boats a considerable disadvantage as they chased the fleet up the course. Fred Kinmonth and Nick Burns’ Sydney GTS 43, Otonomos Mandrake sailed their way to two wins in the first races of the day with their luck continuing on as they finished only 23 seconds behind Tiffany

Koo’s King Mills 40, Hero Racing Team on the islands race – putting Otonomos Mandrake in first place going into Day 2. Hero Racing Team followed in 2nd place with Joachim Isler’s and Drew Taylor’s Mills 41 Ambush in third place. In the IRC Racer 2 fleet, Steve Manning and Paul O’Malley’s newly acquired A40 Red Rum, took three bullets making it a cracking first day of racing on board their new boat. Manning said “First time on the water, first time with the sails up and first races. The three bullets are great; perhaps its beginners’ luck but we’re all very happy. There will probably be a bit more breeze on the water tomorrow, so that will take a bit more crew work and more coordination which we are obviously working on for the first time.” Nick Southward’s J-109 Whiskey Jack also came away with three bullets giving them a first in the IRC Racer 3 fleet, followed by Simon Powell’s A40RC Sell Side Dream in second and Gordon Liu’s Sydney 38 Kingsman in third. With an initial AP’d start, the IRC Premier fleet took off and saw Moonblue 2 win both their races ahead of Alex Yu’s Bavaria 55 Clove DECEMBER 2017 AHOY! |

On Day 2, a northerly breeze of 15 to 22kts greeted the racers as they arrived at the race track. IRC 0, 1, 2 and 3 were sent on two windward/ leeward and an island course, while IRC Premier raced one island course and the HKPN division sailing one windward/leeward and an island course. All the leaders from Day 1 of the regatta were able to maintain their leads in their divisions including Zannekin in IRC Racer 0, who eventually won their division for the third year running. FreeFire followed Zannekin, having had a great day on the water; taking home two bullets and seeing them climb up the ladder after a frustrating first day on the water. Third in the division went to Lighthorse Alpha Plus. In IRC Racer 1 division it was Volvo China Coast Regatta Race Chairman Fred Kinmonth and Nick Burns’ GTS 43 Otonomos Mandrake who

took first place after an impressive run of three firsts out of six races. Otonomos Mandrake was followed by Hero Racing Team who sailed her way to claim the other three bullets in the division. There were quite a few broaches and ripped kites across the IRC Racer 2 and 3 fleets on Saturday resulting in numerous retirements. In the end it was Red Rum who took home the trophy thanks to four wins out of six races. Red Rum was followed by Simon Powell’s A40RC Sell Side Dream. Simon commented “The regatta was fantastic; it is without doubt one of the premier regattas in Asia. Fantastic winds, shame we can’t get the seventh race in tomorrow but all credit to the race officer for getting the races in over two days. We have had a great time and have enjoyed every minute of it, and it was topped off with a bullet in the last race. We worked hard to try and chase Manning’s new boat. It was very close racing and thoroughly enjoyable.”

In IRC Premier, Moonblue 2 came out ahead of Clove Hitch, with a win in all of their races. As the last boats crossed the line in their final race of the day it was announced that due to the probability of a typhoon 3 signal being issued and still being in force on the Sunday, all racing would be cancelled for

the final day of the regatta. Boats and sailors scurried to get to their designated typhoon shelters in gusts up to 40kts, before heading to the relocated Poolside Regatta Dinner and Overall Prizegiving. With no racing the next day celebrations were very merry, and when sailors awoke on Sunday morning they were greeted not by a typhoon 3 but rather a typhoon 8. Last but not least, we would like to send out a big thank you to the 2017 Volvo China Coast Regatta race and organising committee and the fantastic team of volunteers for which we could not run the event without. See you all again next year!

he format for the 8th edition of the Volvo Hong Kong to Vietnam Race was slightly different with the three boats from the IRC Racer 2 starting on Tuesday 17 October; 25 hours earlier than the rest of the fleet, allowing them to converge on Nha Trang at a similar finish time. It was a beautiful Wednesday on Hong Kong harbour with blue skies and a north easterly breeze of 10kts for the start of IRC 0 and 1 divisions. 10 boats were on the start line when the horn sounded at 1320hrs with all boats getting away cleanly. There was a bit of a tacking battle after the line as many boats stuck to the right side of the harbour to avoid marine traffic and exclusion zones.

Once out of the harbour the fleet popped their kites and fetched towards the Lema Islands. The boats were barely on their way when Geoff Hill’s Smith 72 Antipodes blew up the first kite of the race; possibly an early precursor to the events of their race as they had to retire after the first night of racing due to steering failure and head towards Da Nang to drop off crew and pick up fuel. As the fleet continued on their 673nm downwind thrash towards Nha Trang, tactical decisions were being made which put some of the fleet to the east and some to the west of the rhumb line. For the racers that headed to the east, it paid off; especially for Drew Taylor’s and Joachim Isler’s Mills 41 Ambush. Ambush

was punching above her weight to keep up with the 50 footers for most of the race and in the end clocking an impressive elapsed time of 61h 27m 59s and taking the win in the IRC Racer 1 division and second in IRC Overall. The IRC Racer 2 division stayed in a pretty close pack for most of the race until they passed the Paracel Islands where Nick Southwards J-109 Whiskey Jack headed along the coast and the rest of the IRC Racer 2 stayed to the east. The IRC Racer 2 division was fortunate to start in more breeze allowing them to keep in front of the fleet until Philip Turner’s Reichel/Pugh 66 Alive passed them 39h into her race. Alive sailed into Nha Trang on Friday afternoon to take the Line Honours win with an elapsed

time of 50h 11m 56s; a mere 15m 35s outside of her 2015 race time, putting Alive in 4th place in IRC Overall with a corrected time of 79h 21m 52s. Duncan Hine, skipper of Alive summed up their race, “It was a lot of fun; we had a good time. There wasn’t quite enough breeze to surf all the way but it was enough to blow out our A3/4 which meant that we didn’t VMG run as well as we would have liked to so we had to change our race route – we did a few extra miles. No real lows of the race; we didn’t wipe out or anything. It was wet but it was wonderful. The race is the best, this is our second-time racing in it and I’m sure we will be back.” With a corrected time of 72h 53m 41s the first Italian entry to take part in the race Vincenzo Onorato’s Cookson 50 Mascalzone Latino was the big winner, taking IRC Racer 0 and DECEMBER 2017 AHOY! |

Feature | Volvo Hong Kong to Vietnam Race IRC Racer Overall. Mascalzone Latino owner Vincenzo Onorato commented on the race on arrival, “It was amazing because we did the Race in 53h 26m 31s and we did around 770nm actual distance sailed – unbelievable! The biggest high – we had a top speed of 30kts; unbelievable.” First to finish from IRC Racer 2 was Russian entry Alexander Vodovatov’s First 40 CR No Applause however it was Whiskey Jack who won her division with a corrected time of 83h 19m 14s. Nick Southward said “It was a great race; it was really fantastic; especially the last day where we had a ‘bucking bronco’ ride down the coast of Vietnam, where we really were going very fast. We had a top speed of 18kts which is actually Whiskey Jack’s top speed ever. The introduction of staggered starts was a great move because it meant that we arrived at the same time as the big boats. The only low point of the race was when we wrapped our A4 around the forestay in the worst possible wrap you could imagine; hourglass top and bottom. We were really low for about an hour while we figured out how to unwrap it, but we eventually we did and it was great that it was still in one piece.” Peter Fletcher crew member of Otonomos Mandrake, Fred Kinmonth and Nick Burns’ GTS 43 reported on the race from a sailor’s perspective, Otonomos Mandrake placed 3rd in IRC Racer 1 division.

| DECEMBER 2017 AHOY!

Peter, writes: A little ditty on the sleigh ride to Nha Trang, onboard the good ship Otonomos Mandrake. A 673nm downhill slide to Nha Trang; a rapidly developing tourist destination in southern Vietnam. Sounds simple. But like all things simple, there are always hidden obstacles that in fact make passages like this anything but simple. With typhoons spread all over the western pacific and the South China Sea in the weeks

leading up to the race, there was some concern as to whether the event would in fact happen. It also gave the weather boffins plenty to talk about leading up to race day. But the weather gods smiled nicely and the race got underway with a lighter than usual forecast for this event. The general game plan was to get south for the strongest pressure then get around the Paracels for a light air run to the finish. Once again the harbour start provided the spectators and competitors a spectacular send off. Onboard Otonomos Mandrake we played the shifts and pressure pretty well and found ourselves up with the leaders as the kites went up for the first time. As the afternoon wore on, we watched the quicker boats slide over the horizon and we settled in to what was to become an eventful first night at sea. Around 70nm south of Hong Kong, having already made it past the first fleet of fishing trawlers, we came across the next fleet. Poorly lit boats and netting are never easy to navigate and sure enough around 2200hrs we ended up in a very big net and in our efforts to free ourselves eventually we tied ourselves in a knot. Sails down, diver over the side, large knife deployed. Eventually after a couple of hours being stationary, we hoisted sails again and headed south. In all of this, we came out on starboard and on the making leg, we continued on the course but it proved a fairly significant mistake as boats on port were

sailing into more pressure. We did have a game plan, and it was discussed, but it’s pretty hard to gybe away from such a making leg. The next day was pretty ‘same same’ as we sailed south in around 20 to 25kts of breeze. Life onboard was good.

massive piles of rubbish drifting around on the tide lines during the race. Disturbing to see and not diminishing, which is even more disturbing.

Even a bad race to Vietnam is a lot better than some other events where cold water hitting you in the face at 20 to 30kts knots whilst going upwind leaves you questioning your sanity. Warm water, downwind… there’s a lot to like about this race. The one negative, and it’s topical at the moment, but has been going on for years, is the amount of rubbish that is polluting our oceans. We encountered

The rest of the race proved uneventful, albeit a little windier than expected, so despite our issues we were able to finish in reasonable time and enjoy some of the warm hospitality Vietnam has to offer. A welcome addition to the race, is what will become a new marina, which once completed, will offer safe anchoring to all competitors. Come on 2019 and we can do it all again!

The second night rolled on and with no moon it made driving a little challenging. It was about to get easier for us, but not in the way we wanted. At around 2200hrs our bowsprit exploded leaving us little choice but to drop the spinnaker. Suddenly with a jib top steering was a lot easier as we effected repairs to the

bowsprit. At daylight we had managed to effectively repair the bowsprit to allow kites to be flown again so off we went chasing the now disappeared pack.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from the Sailing Office! The new year will see a very busy first quarter with the 29er Hong Kong Open in late December, Zhik 29er Worlds in early January, the Hong Kong stopover of the Volvo Ocean Race in late January and the leg re-start on 7 February. Straight after Chinese New Year we will also be hosting Hong Kong Race Week out of Middle Island and of course let’s not forget the Rolex China Sea Race starting on 28 March.

Volvo Ocean Race Hong Kong Stopover

We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has volunteered to assist with our events so far this season; we greatly appreciate your support. Hong Kong Race Week will be held from 20 to 25 February and with four race tracks and 230 boats, we need up to 150 volunteers per day. Not all volunteers positions are on the water and some don’t even require prior sailing experience – registration, sign on/off and launch and retrieve are all onshore roles. Volunteer sign up can be found via the website: www.hongkongraceweek.com

Rolex China Sea Race The Rolex China Sea Race will start in Victoria Harbour on Wednesday 28 March at 1120hrs. Notice of Race can be downloaded from the website: www.rolexchinasearace.com. The Rolex China Sea Race is a 565nm offshore race from Hong Kong to Subic Bay, Philippines and is run under Category 1 of the World Sailing Offshore Special Regulations. In addition the race requires 50% of crew to have valid Sea Safety and Survival Course and 30% First Aid. Details of both courses can be found on the club’s website: http://www.rhkyc.org.hk/ShorebasedCourses.aspx Please note that due to the number of events taking place in January/ February the pool at Kellett Island will not close until after 7 February and therefore may not reopen until after the race has started. If you need to update your Sea Safety and Survival certificate please book in early with Asia Pacific Yachting as the course dates below are the only courses that will be run before the start of the Rolex China Sea Race . Course 1 – 12 and 13 December Course 2 – 13 and 14 January

The Volvo Ocean Race is coming to Hong Kong for the first time ever with the action taking place at Kai Tak Runway Park from 17 to 31 January. The Race Festival is the place to be for 15 action packed days of entertainment and sailing. Join the festivities on opening night where VOR are planning a special evening for the sailing community and then come down again on Saturday 20 January to join the celebrations and hopefully welcome the arriving yachts. The best place to experience the races for the Victoria Harbour In-Port Race and the Around Hong Kong Island Race will be at Kai Tak Runway Park where you can soak up the atmosphere while watching all the action on the big screen. There’s also an opportunity to jump on a VIP spectator boat for the In-Port Race by grabbing yourself a VIP ticket at www.volvooceanraceHK.com The race re-start takes place on Wednesday 7 February with an on-water parade down Victoria Harbour so grab a spot along the harbourfront to see the yachts for the last time before leaving Hong Kong! he 53rd Head of the Charles Regatta saw the Club represented in both the Men’s Masters 8 and the Director’s Challenge Quad. The world’s largest two-day rowing event, this was the first time the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club participated at this level in this Boston-based race. Once our entry was accepted in the late spring, training began in earnest in July compliments of a program shared by former Club coach Toby Dankbaar. Comprised of active and absent members from Hong Kong, the US and the UK, the lineups included a several first time competitors to this regatta. Most members arrived on Wednesday and the crews were able to get practice outings in on both the Thursday and Friday. Sean Gibbons – the coxswain in 2010 when the RHKYC entered a Four+ – arrived early Friday and was able to help the 8 settle in race day-1 .

8 line up: John Skinner, Henry Gills, John Pinkel, Martin Holmes, Mark Hughes, Richard Allin, Phil Adkins, Mark Welles COX Sean Gibbons

Held on the penultimate complete weekend of October, Day 1 of the HOCR saw New England experiencing unprecedented warm weather which made for great racing and enjoyable viewing from the river’s bank. The 8 had a solid warm up, further helped by the fact that it launched 8 km from the start and used its first opportunity as a full crew to establish a rhythm before hitting the warm up area. The 8+ enjoyed a solid start and quickly settled into their target stroke rate of 31. Given it started in the middle of the pack, they spent most of the race on their own and only had to hold off one crew at the final bridge on the course, finishing 15th overall. The conditions on Day Two were even nicer with a bit of a stream and flat water. Using a 4x from Penn AC, their elite coach – and former Club coach M. Sean Hall – helped fine tune the boat’s rigging and oard settings that morning and sent the lads on their way. A particularly challenging course, the steering of the DC4x was left to Henry Gills, who guided the Empacher shell ably from bow seat. They had a strong race, moving up 9 places and finishing 25th out of a field of 38. All in all, a great weekend for racing and catching up with old friends. The next big race in the US will be the World Rowing Masters Regatta next September in Florida and the Club is poised to have a large contingent representing Hong Kong then as well. NB: Former Rowing Manager Sarah Garner was also at the Regatta with several youth crews from the Kai Tak Rowing Club. We shared the same boathouse and it was great seeing a familiar face from home.

The Race Course

And while in Boston we came across a former university classmate of one of the rowers who traded for a Hong Kong shirt when he rowed at Henley in 1980. A member of that crew was to-be Captain David Sorton. A small world indeed… DECEMBER 2017 AHOY! |

his year again the Lantau Classic OC races where hosted by the Lantau Boat Club (LBC) on the 14 October in Discovery Bay. It was a first for many of us new RHKYC paddlers. It was for us the chance to race on different boats (OC6 and OC1) and different distances. The events were: • 9km around Peng Chau (OC6) • 3km around the rock (OC6) • 500m sprint relays (OC1) • 500m sprint relays (OC6)

As rookies, we had a chance to participate in every event. It was so exciting! We have chosen to share our experience on two races. First of all, the 9km race! As all the boats lined up the crew was anxious but eager to start. Finally, the horn blew and off we went. The first leg was full of adrenaline as we went side by side with the other competing boats. The day was very windy and waves were coming ama side but we managed not to huli, twice!

One of the other crews wasn’t that lucky and did huli. After getting into the open waters, the sea conditions were with us but the adrenaline stayed high as we found ourselves head to head with VRC. At the second buoy, they even managed to get in front of us with a better turn. We didn’t panic and persisted with a solid and consistent stroke. Metre after metre, we came back and overtook them before the next buoy. We then managed to hold them off on our way back with wind and waves against us. This race resulted as a clear victory for RHKYC as our A team came 1st and we rookies came 2nd! This was an exhilarating start to the day! We then moved on to the 3km race “around the rock”. Between a sprint and a distance race, it was a first for our all rookie crew. Even our steer, Erin Juhl, was steering her first race even though she is a very gifted paddler. It was hard to know which pace to maintain in this race. The experience of the other boats racing before us, pushed us to have a very strong start and go into the chug after the first turn. We did start fast but not enough to overcome VRC’s women boat. They took the opportunity to secure the first place and we managed to keep a second place after the turn. Thanks to solid calling from Nicky De Lacy, the good pacing of Emma Bannerman in seat 1 and a good response of the boat, we managed to distance all other boats and finished a comfortable 2nd place, synonym of 1st place amongst the rookie crews! This day was really nice with an awesome BBQ organized by LBC and fantastic results for RHKYC Outrigger. Thank you all, coach Anna Mathisen, Captains Sarah Burke and John McLennan and organizer Barney Riggs for making this event possible.

W O RD S: MELIS S A DAVIS I PH OTO : ERIN JUHL

As an outrigger canoe paddler (and depending upon your seat position) your chief role will be to work together with your crew delivering balanced power through stroke technique and efficiency. You will also need to prepare yourself both mentally and physically for the race, possibly training over a number of weeks or even months with your crew to ensure you are fit enough to successfully complete the course. Of course, this all sounds like the most ideal race preparation however, just as life is unpredictable so is the process of crew selection within outrigger canoe racing. Seats change, paddlers become injured or unwell, canoes get damaged

and race crew availability both increases and decreases at short notice. And therefore, due to a lack of steers-people available, I would now be making my ‘race steering debut’. Despite feeling a little nervous at the idea of steering a mixed crew in big water for the first time I was also very excited by the opportunity, and so I eagerly traded in my Kialoa hoku double bend paddle for a 50 inch Kialoa steering blade. Conditions, conditions, conditions, it’s all about the conditions. Strong easterly winds, currents, tides, ama-side swells and boat wake determine the level of difficulty along the course and will affect which line one should take. It’s enough to put fear, anxiety and apprehension in a crew! Yet the conditions on the day of the race, 21 October, could not

RHKYC registered an impressive five OC6 race crews for the race held all achieving commendable results. An honourable mention must go to the Women’s A crew who not only won the women’s OC6 unlimited canoe category but absolutely smashed it setting a new course record time of 2 hrs 09mins 30secs. Congratulations to all those involved, whether paddling or steering, in what is always a highly anticipated long distance race around Lamma Island. Results PLACE

his outrigger canoe (OC6) race presents significant challenges for both paddlers and steersperson. Relocation of Craft on RHKYC moorings and hardstanding areas during major regattas Marine he RHKYC has two core sporting activities; yacht racing and rowing and as such the Club organises events for both sports, at Club level, national level and international level throughout the year. These events take place at all three clubhouses, Kellett Island, Middle Island and Shelter Cove. The General Committee has formulated a set of guidelines and bye-laws to assist these core activities to take place. 1 To facilitate class racing for yachts, sections of the pontoons at all three locations are reserved for class boats from 0900 hours on the day preceding a day where class racing is scheduled at a particular location to 0900 hours on the day following the scheduled race. During those times no vessel other than club operated boats and class racing yachts may lay alongside the pontoon(s) without with the express permission of the Marine Office. 2 During major regattas, such as the Around the Island Race or the Autumn Regatta, Kellett Island is extremely busy with visiting class boats and yachts. To enable as many craft as possible to enter the regatta the car park is used for the storage of class boats before and after the event. There is a limit to the number of class boats we can accommodate because of the finite number of trolleys we have available. Every attempt is made to lift non anti fouled craft on to the hard standing but this is not always possible. 3 Before the offshore races such as the China Sea Race, where we have visiting competitors for overseas, the moorings and pontoons are busy and the Marine Office tries to accommodate club registered

34

| DECEMBER 2017 AHOY!

craft requiring temporary moorings at Kellett Island as much as possible. However this is not always possible especially when there is construction work taking place in the Typhoon Shelter. 4 During the Rowing Around the Island Race the larger rowing boats start from Kellett Island and the smaller craft from Middle Island. The north pontoon at Kellett is required for the start of the race and the changeover of crews from the Middle Island start. The class boats racing on the day before the RATIR will not have access to the pontoon when they complete racing and will have to moor at the south pontoon. Several Flying Fifteens will have to be relocated to allow for the rowing craft to sit on the hard standing beside the crane. 5 Members should be aware that when the club organises international events disruption to the hard standing will occur. This is especially true at Middle Island and to a lesser extent at Kellett Island. An example of this was the Etchells Worlds where hard standing space was required at Kellett to enable boat measurement to take place on the hardstanding at Kellett, and some class boat were moved to Middle Island for the duration of the event. Class boats at Middle Island are also affected when Hong Kong Race Week, and other international regattas, take place. During these regattas the class boats need to be relocated to moorings as the hard standing space is required for the boats competing in the race. The club arranges for the craft to be cleaned by a diver at least once, and normally twice, during the time they are in the water and they are high pressure washed when lifted back out. As such the Club recommends that any craft who may have to be placed on moorings, to facilitate the holding of regattas, are anti-fouled.

Finally, we are in autumn and it’s time to play more golf. On 20 October we were invited by Aberdeen Boat Club (ABC) to play against their golf team as the ABC are celebrating their 50 th anniversary. The tournament was held at the beautiful Hong Kong Golf Club in Deep Water Bay. Weather was perfect and the greens were fast. Though it’s a short executive course, to make pars were never easy. The KGS has managed to form a team of eight. Congratulations to May Chun, a new KGS member, who won the hghest ladies Stableford and to David Lee, also a KGS member, who won the men’s highest. Our Past Commodore Ambrose Lo was the winner of longest drive! As most of us are also sailors we all share the joy on land as much as we are at sea!

Volvo Ocean Race and Swedish Food Promotion with Chef Jaakko Sorsa Events | Promotions

Executive Chef, FINDS Founder and Honoree President, Disciples Escoffier Hong Kong Chef Jaakko Sorsa’s most pleasant of taste-memories go back to his grandparents’ island where the local ingredients are the most natural and pure. Growing up by carefully watching Grandma Ida’s magic in turning freshwater fish, wild mushrooms, wild berries and game into the most delicious traditional dishes, it was logical for him to decide to begin the journey in the culinary field. In 2004 Jaakko arrived in Hong Kong to open FINDS (Finland, Iceland, Norway, Denmark, and Sweden), to introduce true Nordic flavours to Asia. FINDS kitchen follows the seasons of the north and its cooking highlights authentic preserving techniques, such as multiple forms of smoking, drying, curing and pickling. Many of the ingredients are personally sourced from the Northern region. Jaakko started his culinary career 20 years ago apprenticing with Swedish master chefs and gained a solid foundation of classic cooking skills. Jaakko then became one of the keys in building up the success of the two-Michelin-starred Chez Dominique in Helsinki.
