Commodore’s Message I would like to take this opportunity to thanks all members and non members who are giving up their time and volunteering to assist with this year’s Hong Kong Race Week – without them this event would not be able to run. The event takes place at Middle Island from 4 to 9 February and promises to delivery yet another thrilling competition.

What an exciting opportunity we had to meet and hear from one of the most talented and legendary offshore sailors, Francis Joyon on 17 January. Francis is a winner of the solo transatlantic race, La Route de Rhum, and the fastest man around the World and is the record holder of the Jules Verne Commodore John Woo Trophy, nonstop around the world in 40 days. At the time of writing Francis and his crew on board a 97’ trimaran IDEC2 (former Groupama 3) are about to attempt to break the record for the Clipper route (Hong Kong to London) currently held by Maserati in 36 days, 2 hours, 37 minutes and 2 seconds. We wish them the best of luck.

February marks the start of the season for the Club’s Dragon Boat team, Royal X with the official Bai San being held this month at Middle Island. Meanwhile, the Club rowers are a month into their training programme with the ultimate aim of competing at Henley Royal Regatta in July. I would like to wish all of our athletes all the best with their training programmes leading up to the busy 2020 season!

Looking forward, the Club is pleased to host the BuyAssociation HKRNVR Memorial Vase on Saturday 29 February which will be the third Harbour pursuit race of the Top Dog Series. It is still not too late to enter the series if you have competed in the Around the Island Race or the Lipton Trophy. Rolex China Sea Race around Easter in April is not too far down the line too. This is the time for those sailors and boat owners interested in offshore sailing to form a team and get the boat ready for it.

Firstly, may I wish you all a Kung Hei Fat Choi and I hope the Year of Rat brings you good health, great fortune and fantastic sailing, rowing and paddling all year long!

Kung Hei Fat Choi and Happy Chinese New Year of the Rat! The Rat is the first in the cycle of the twelve zodiac animals that symbolise each year. According to one myth, the Jade Emperor declared that the sequence would be decided by the order in which the twelve animals arrived at his party. Along the way, the Rat tricked the Ox into giving him a ride, and then, just as they arrived, the Rat jumped down and landed ahead of the Ox, thus securing his spot in first place.

From 4 to 9 February the Club will once again be hosting Hong Kong Race Week which over the years has firmly established itself as the youth sailor’s regatta of choice in Asia. It is fantastic for the Club to once again host a major international sporting event for Hong Kong, and we look forward to welcoming sailors from nine nations to compete in this year’s edition. What a fantastic event this has become and we are sure Middle Island will once again be buzzing with activity, and some highly competitive sailing will be taking place over four racetracks on the south side of Hong Kong Island. We wouldn’t normally have consecutive wine dinners from the same region here at the Club, however, when you have two of the best Tuscan wineries coming into town, we simply couldn’t say no to having the owner/winemakers come along and share with us the stories of their wineries and to introduce us to their fabulous wines. As always our sommeliers and chefs have devised exquisite menus to highlight the wines to their full potential. The first owner and Winemaker is

Anna Maria Cruciata from the Val Di Toro Winery who will be here on 27 February. Val di Toro is a family run vineyard and is a shining example of environmental sustainability in wine production, and of course, is the winery which produces Anna’s Secret which is the Club’s favourite rose wine. Our second guest is Dr Giampaolo Bruni who owns the vineyards of Piandaccoli, located between Florence and Pisa, and who will be here on 5 March. Piandaccoli produce some truly amazing red wines, which, as well as using the traditional Sangiovese grape of that region, also specialise in the use of some of some ancient varietals to add greater complexity, freshness and balance to their highly respected wines. Valentine’s Day is as always on 14 February, which this year falls on a Friday. Apart from the ever popular special six-course set dinner in the Compass Room, we are also offering a special four-course set dinner at Middle Island and at Shelter Cove in order to provide members with more options to celebrate this occasion with their loved ones. On 28 February Middle Island plays host to a very colourful South American Night brimming with incredible food, live entertainment and of course, salsa dancing. Come and join us for what promises to be a fantastic Friday night out. From time to time we must use this space as an opportunity to remind members of the Bye-Laws. In this instance I would like to highlight Bye Law 15.6 – “The flying of drones or other similar equipment is prohibited at any club premises unless with the permission of the General Committee who may delegate the granting of such permission to the General Manager.” All Bye-Laws are important, however, given that the Kellett Island Clubhouse sits within the No-Fly-Zone for the government flying service heliport at the Convention Centre, it is essential that members fully comply with this one at all times. Kung Hei Fat Choi, and I look forward to seeing you all enjoying all that the Club has to offer in the year of the Rat.

我籍此提醒會員有 關附例15.6條 —「The flying of drones or other similar equipment is prohibited at any club premises unless with the permission of the General Committee who may delegate the granting of such permission to the General Manager.」

he BuyAssociation Lipton Trophy started on 30 November 2019 with the Hong Kong skyline highlighted under a perfect blue sky. With a consistent 7 to 8kts easterly breeze throughout the harbour, Race Officer Gareth Williams opted for a Hung Hom start and elected to set the fleet around triangles and windward/leeward courses around Kowloon Bay and Tai Koo Shing. Pursuit races work on the basis that each boat or Class of boats is given a different start time based on their handicap, which in a perfect race would result in all boats finishing at the same target time of

1630hrs. With 57 boats racing, the first of the staggered starts was at 1400hrs with the Pandora fleet and the last boat to start was Ambush at 1504hrs. As the breeze continued to strengthen throughout the race up to 15kts, some of the yachts started to struggle to keep their kites hoisted during the tight reaching legs, many having to drop their spinnaker completely as they struggled to hold on. Big boat Crystal was the only a casualty of the building breeze, extensively ripping their kite. Pandora Panopae did well in holding off the faster yachts for the first of the large laps to Tai Koo Shing before eventually being overtaken by Ruffian Buster. Buster managed to maintain their lead until the finish at Hung Hom at 1626hrs. Impala Taxi crossed the finishing line in 2nd place followed by Flying Fifteen Forty Forte. The BuyAssociation Lipton Trophy is the second of four events that make up the Top Dog Trophy Series 2019-2020, the next race in the series will be BuyAssociation HKRNVR Memorial Vase on 29 February. Around the Island Race 2019 W O RD S: NICK C R A BB | IM AGES: O F FI CIA L R A CE PH OTO G R A PHERS

Feature | Around the Island Race 2019 – Coastal Rowing he Around the Island Race 2019 (ATIR) for coastal rowing was a dramatic, inspiring, record breaking event that was held a week following the World Rowing Coastal Championships in early November. Given the luck that we had with the weather during the World Rowing Coastal Championships (WRCC), I was astonished that this would continue into the last weekend of major racing for the Rowing and Paddle Sports Section in 2019. Having said this, the Race Director and I had sat down on the week leading up to ATIR – we were concerned with the forecasted northeasterly monsoon providing force 5 to 6 conditions on the eastern and southeastern part of the 45km course. These forecasted

12

| FEBRUARY 2020 AHOY!

conditions would of course be fantastic news for our outrigger canoeing competitors who would race on the Sunday (also would have been useful for the sailing edition of ATIR that would be held two weeks following) but for this year’s coastal rowing race, I was concerned. For the best part, the majority of our rowing athletes train and compete on either a 1000m or 2000m flat water course for the best part of the year. Perhaps some of them would race a head race or had taken the opportunity to train towards and compete in the WRCC of which the longest course distance was 6km in relatively sheltered harbour water. So given that we needed to make the decision if we would run the 45km race when expecting at least 2m swells at Cape d’Agulier with winds at

– Coastal Rowing I am a strong believer in safely facilitating athletes and competitors to push themselves outside of their comfort zone but I was unsure if allowing the race to go ahead on the full course and including these invited entries would compromise our very high safety standards. However, after a few meetings and phone calls, the decision was made to go ahead with the full 45km race. What a decision that turned out to be. On the morning of the race, the conditions had eased slightly, the sun was shining and 31 crews started the race on time! The Club had fielded seven crews including a composite crew in a mixture of relay and iron categories. Three of these crews had Club Rowing Captains within their ranks (Alex Bidlake, Wan Ng and Guy Parsonage), a great sight to see for the Rowing membership! THE RACE With racing starting between 0800hrs and 0845hrs, by 1000hrs the crews were well spread out. Conditions in the harbour out to Cape Collinson had been deceivingly calm with most crews then struggling to keep their glide through the swell on the eastern side of Hong Kong Island. But thankfully the idyllic views, support boat motivation and the

a constant 18 to 20kts was a tough call not withstanding that for the first time we would have a single sculler (C1x) and a Para-rowing double (C2x) competing in the race. The C1x entry, Ben Booth who had travelled to Hong Kong from the US to compete in the WRCC was invited to enter ATIR by the race’s organising committee, a challenge which went hand-in-hand with his rowing pedigree and experience. Booth had already raced similar races in the US including winning the 20 mile Blackburn Challenge three years in a row. The Para C2x entry was crewed by Ajmal Samuel and Agustas Navickas. Samuel was returning for the second year in a row, having competed FEBRUARY 2020 AHOY! |

in a coastal quad in 2018 with three able-bodied rowers. Navickas, a Paralympics athlete (Rio 2016) had raised funds to travel to Hong Kong from Lithuania with his father to compete in this race.

thought of a good meal and sipping ice cold beer pushed all competitors safely around Cape d’Aguilar onwards towards Stanley and the on towards Repulse Bay. Approaching Middle Island, the course changed depending on what category the crew was racing. The nine relay crews swapped at Middle Island and the remaining iron crews rowed a course south of Middle Island and north of Round Island. Throughout the race, the two lead boats, Nautical Club of Thessaloniki and Societe Nautique De Monaco in the Open C4x+ category had competed strongly remaining within 10m for the first 30km of the 45km course. The crew from Thessaloniki was made up of predominately fine rowing athletes who rowed the conditions extremely well, leading the experienced coastal rowers from Monaco for the majority of this 30km stretch of the course. However, it was the experience that delivered with Monaco pulling away and having a clear lead by Sulphur Channel. The final stretch of the course from Kennedy Town to Kellett Island was extremely challenging for all crews. The water was (as it always is) extremely messy, with ferry wake rebounding off the sea walls having a washing machine affect on the boats making it very difficult to keep a good stroke rhythm. With our experienced safety team in place, covering the Macau Ferry Terminal and the Central Pier area, all crews made it safely through the challenging conditions and back to Kellett Island. Societe Nautique De Monaco rowed the fasted time of the day, finishing in a record time of 3:13:53. Ben Booth finished in an impressive time of 4:32:21 and the Para C2x (Samuel and Navickas) completed the 45km course in an inspiring time of 7:35:37. I would like to offer my congratulations to all the crews who raced especially our Club crews who strongly represented RHKYC on that November weekend. Finally, I would like to thank all our amazing volunteers – it goes without saying that these races would not take place if it wasn’t for these incredible people, so thank you!

his emblem, one of two, was originally mounted on the entrance gate to HMS Tamar at the Prince of Wales Barracks in Central, which was the Headquarters of the British Forces serving in Hong Kong. The emblem was donated to the Club at the time of the Handover in

1997. The year commemorated on the emblem, 1878, is the year in which HMS Tamar first arrived in Hong Kong. It’s twin is displayed at the Hong Kong Museum of Coastal Defence. It is unclear when the emblem was painted white, gold and blue and mounted on the external wall of the Shelter Cove Clubhouse where it remained for many years. Last summer, however, it was decided to put it on display in the newly refurbished Bistro and so it was it was brought to Kellett Island. Luckily, Club research on the emblem led us to a high resolution image online of the second emblem in the museum. This enabled the Club to copy the colour scheme as well as adding in the words Hong Kong in the rather unique font. The images here show the progress of the work as we tracked it from having its old paint blasted off, through to the various stages of the new colours being painted on and finally being mounted on the wall in the Bistro Bar where many of you will by now have seen it.

The inaugural Inter-School Sailing Festival was organized in 2002 by RHKYC’s parent-led Youth Sailing Class to encourage more school’s sailing and sail training in Hong Kong. The concept was simple – each team would consist of a minimum of six sailors, who would race three dinghies in a team racing format against their opposition. The results for each boat in a team would be combined and the team with the lowest combined score would win, hence a team finishing 2nd, 3rd and 5th in a race would prevail over a team finishing 1st, 4th and 6th. The team racing format has the effect of neutralizing the benefit of having one very good sailor in a team, as being first over the line is not necessarily the optimal result for the team. China Sea 200 Dash The Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club invites entries to the fourth China Sea 200 Dash, a Category 3 offshore race with liferafts using virtual marks to create a course which starts and finishes in Hong Kong waters. The intent is to help boats get tuned-up and their crews ready for night sailing before the start of the Rolex China Sea Race 2020. Boats not entering in the Rolex China Sea Race are also welcome to enter, subject to meeting the requirements outlined in the Notice of Race (NoR). It is the intent of the race committee that course lengths will differ between divisions to enable the majority of boats to finish around the same time.

Saturday 29 February will see the second pursuit race of the Top Dog Series, the BuyAssociation HKRNVR Memorial Vase. The trophy was presented to the Club in 1950 by officers of the HKRNVR and HKNVF in memory of their comrades who fell in the battle for Hong Kong from 1941 to 1950 with the proviso that “the course should take participating yachts into waters patrolled by the HKRNVR”. The HKRNVR is now defunct but the trophy continues to serve as a reminder of when amateur sailors played their part in the security of Hong Kong. Nowadays the course takes the fleet out through the harbour to the Eastern approaches and back and the HKRNVR Memorial Vase will be presented to the first boat that finishes. Notice of Race and online entry are available from the club’s website.

These days the Boase Cohen & Collins Inter-School Festival is going from strength to strength each year with 22 teams from 17 schools taking part in 2019. This year the festival will take place on 14 and 15 March and is probably the most spectator friendly regatta at the Club with racing taking part in front of the Middle Island Clubhouse with live commentary. Come and support your school as teams battle it out over two days with about 100 races being sailed. Everyone is welcome to come and enjoy the atmosphere at Middle Island hardstanding with racing starting at 1000hrs each day.

Rolex China Sea Race Friday 6 March is the entry deadline for the 30 th edition of our biennial blue water classic race, Rolex China Sea Race. The Rolex China Sea Race is one of Asia’s oldest World Sailing Category 1 offshore race’s taking boats 565 nautical miles from Victoria Harbour to Subic Bay in the Philippines. The online entry form, Notice of Race and submission schedule are available at www.rolexchinasearace.com – with 35 boats expected to enter, the earlier you submit your information the smoother the scrutineering process will be. ith 15 boats entered for the 2019/20 Hong Kong Class Championships, it would be the first time in many years that the fleet championships would be raced on Victoria harbour, with the city as a back drop. With a Northerley wind forecast for the weekend it was to be a shifty and unpredictable breeze as the pressure came over the mountains and into the Harbour. The first day of the championships saw three boats being called over the line and all 3 going back, Sam Chan and Nick Atkinson on FF4038, Kelvin Cheung and Michael Bennett on ff3978 and Peter Britten and Oli Merz on FF3722. All three decided to split from the fleet to the right side of the course which proved a winning move, as they arrived first at the windward mark, places they wouldn’t relinquish in what would become a regatta of getting the shifts right throughout the weekend. There were wind holes the size of ships and and ships slicing down the middle of the course to add to the tension. After day one Peter Britten and Oli Merz held top spot, but with a number of boats in close proximity, it was all on for day 2. The first 2 races on day 2 were sailed up and down Kai Tak and the wind shut down in the final stages of the second race challenging to drift across the line for a finish. It all came down to the last race, which looked like it was going to be cancelled until the breeze filled in to give a steady(ish) 7 knots of breeze to decide the championships. Kelvin Cheung and Michael Bennet on ff3981 took a huge lead on the first beat and rounded the top mark with a clear lead, followed by Sam Chan and Nick Atkinson on ff4038 and then Chris Howard and Niall Westley on ff3468. These boats were then followed by the chasing pack of John Tse and Andy Yeu ff3978 then Peter Britten and Oli Merz on ff3722 which would create the front group of five for the race. As the wind swung it was a matter of picking the shifts both up and downwind, with Johns and Andy ff3978 picking its way through the fleet it looked like their race until they got the wrong windward mark allowing ff3468 and then ff3722 to squeeze through. These two boats then had a fight to the finish with Peter and Oli one ff3722 taking Chris and Niall on FF3997 out on starboard and gybing for the line to clinch the finish by just a couple of boats lengths, taking the race and the championship. After a difficult 2 days racing it came down to the top 5 boats fighting it out in strong tide and patchy wind. Peter Britten and Oli Merz lifted the trophy in ff3722, with John Tse and Andy Yeu ff3978 taking second to finish the podium it was Kelvin Cheung and Michael Bennet ff3981 taking third place. A big thank you to the RO team who had a tough job in difficult condition to get all 6 races and Oli Merz for working with the club and RO teams to ensure we could get a Championships done in the harbour.

hat’s the mark of a high performing team? Is it simply the number of races won or something else that cannot be quantified? This is the question that is running through my head while writing this summary. The Royal X mixed crew ventured into new territory on 1 December by competing in the 10 th Hong Kong Half Marathon Championships. Sure, the race was held in a very familiar location for many Club members in Sha Tin. However, it was a new competition for the team as we had never considered participating in a 21km dragon boat race. This event had a couple notable things working against it for us. First, it is much further than our typical race distances, but more importantly we typically don’t race in December! This is the month in which we typically wind down from a long year of training and racing. It seemed certain that no one would be keen to do it when the idea was raised. You can imagine my surprise when the event received such a warm response from the team. This led to our entry being submitted and only training session scheduled in a blink of an eye. Well, if only it had been that easy! Typically prior to any of our races there are a series of emails, whatsapp messages and phone calls required to clarify the rules, confirm entries, register athletes, ensure race fee payments, determine race crew(s) composition and inform all involved of the details. There is a lot involved, yet we have done many races and avoided any major issues… until now. It would be easy to write a book about all of the things that went wrong, so for your sake and mine the gruesome details will be withheld. The summary is there were too many people in the crew, race date was mixed up and training

nearly missed. All of these issues were addressed with a lot of help from individual team members and it seemed like it would be smooth sailing ahead as we arrived in Sha Tin. Unfortunately, this was not the case. Since this race was sponsored by the Hong Kong China Dragon Boat Association (HKCDBA) each athlete in the race crew must present his or her HKCDBA issued identification card to be allowed to race. The cards for everyone in the RHKYC crew were resting safely at my home rather than with me at the race site. This wasn’t discovered until 15 minutes before the crew registration period was set to begin. If the cards were not retrieved in time then the whole crew would forfeit. Thankfully after a few frantic phone calls my father-in-law, a long time club member himself, was able to get to my apartment to retrieve the cards. Wallis Chan, who was already en route to the race, was able to return to Hong Kong Island, pick up the cards and bring them to the race. Wallis arrived with seconds to spare. This left us as the last team to check in and least popular with the race officials, but at least we made it.

The Royal X, despite the theatrics, made it to the start line and got settled in for the long trek ahead. It will come as no surprise that our struggles (well, my struggles) were far from finished. The race started with 10 boats stretched across the Shing Mun River heading in the direction of Ma On Shan Park. Crews in both the mixed and open categories were slated to start the race at the same time. The Club was in the mixed category. There were awards to the top three finishers in each category, but the goal for the crew was to finish first out of all 10 crews regardless. The race started and we quickly settled into 3rd position literally on the tails of the first and second boats. The first place boat was clearly an open crew consisting entirely of men, while the 2nd place crew included both men and women. Given the long distance of the race we were happy to ride along in 3rd position in the early stages with the thought that the teams ahead of us would likely slow down over time. It wasn’t a huge surprise that our mixed crew was being beaten by a men’s team, but as the race continued it was becoming more and more frustrating for me to see another unknown mixed crew in front of us. This was particularly worrisome as the long distance of the race, though new to us in this format, definitely suits our athletes. When we reached the first the first turning marker about 5km into the race, the other crews had stretched their lead by about 150m. Though we began to catch up after the turn, both of the leading teams started going in what appeared to be the wrong direction. Since it wasn’t clear which crew was correct and no support boats were nearby, we headed for what was supposed to be the 3rd course marker which had a race officials’ boat stationed close to it. As luck would have it the other boats had gone in the correct direction and we had gone off course. Though we were still comfortably in 3rd place overall and 2nd place in our category, the gap between us and the leading boats was now over 600m. Our crew put in a tremendous effort coming back to within 300m shortly after the midway point only to be slowed by wakes from multiple ski boats. Still, it seemed that there was no way that the mixed crew ahead of us could continue at such a pace for the remaining 10km. Oddly though the crews ahead of us maintained a comfortable lead going into the final 2km of the race. My body (and soul) began to hurt not from paddling, but the thought of having to explain how the Club had lost the mixed category in a race that was “perfect for us”. My frantic pleas for more effort pushed the crew into a full scale assault mode in the closing stages of the race. We picked up considerable speed at a time when most would have been slowing to a crawl. Wallis, who saved us earlier in the day, ended up losing a paddle in the process. Though our pace was frantic, there was still a 200m gap between us and the teams ahead when the finish line appeared. The Royal X crossed the line in 3rd place overall, a disappointing 2nd in the mixed category. My thoughts immediately turned to the looming consolation speech to the crew. We returned to the pontoons and unloaded. It was then that I noticed my teammates were celebrating and got a very good look at the crew that finished ahead of us. They did have a woman paddler, but just 1 rather than the requisite 8 minimum for a mixed crew. This meant that they were in fact in the Open category and my original assessment about them was completely wrong. The Royal X had won the mixed by a long margin and even beat an Open crew in the process. It was a tremendous effort with exceptional results and required a completely different post race speech! The VICTORY celebration ensued immediately with many people rightfully laughing at my mistakes and being thanked profusely and thanked repeatedly for exemplary team effort. Thus, I ask again. What’s the measure of a high performing team? Is it simply the number of victories or the way that they are achieved? Most certainly feels like the later...

Dave the Dolphin W O RD S: IA N BROW NL EE, Chair of Sustainability Working Group

In November and December encounters with the dolphin became longer and closer. He has

Trawlers regularly fished in Deep Water Bay with a devastating effect on marine ecology

trawling ban, populations of squid and cuttlefish would increase by 40 percent and those of reef fish by 10 to 20 percent, populations of larger fish, such as groupers and croakers, would surge by 30 to 45 percent. It is often easy to forget that the sea is a complex ecosystem full of life. It is resilient but sensitive to the effects of man. The rate of recovery anticipated in 2012 has yet to be confirmed by research. However, there are studies and anecdotal evidence which show that there has been a significant restoration of the marine ecosystem. Dave the Dolphin may or may not be part of that restoration – he may be there by accident and is actually lost. The appreciation of this beautiful mammal is likely to become a risk that could be devastating. There are more people getting close to Dave, and swimmers, outrigger canoes and rowing boats have been joined by potentially damaging motor boats. Ocean Park has issued an appeal to leave Dave alone and to protect him. If you see this beautiful docile dolphin in Deep Water Bay, treat him with respect, admire him but stay away from him and protect him from others who may unwittingly harm him.

He is gentle but moves fast and is powerful. There are quite a few videos on social media taken both above and below the water. One of our coastal rowers Zhao Fang has taken a couple of videos of his early morning encounters with Dave. “The dolphin chased me and kissed my oar when I was rowing. I stopped and he just started to joyfully play. I rested the oars on the water and he rubs on them, turns over, dives down and then comes back up, breaking the surface and jumping clear. He swims around and under the boat again, seeming to enjoy some company. He also sang to me with audible clear clicking sounds.” Not only is it amazing to have a dolphin living in our bay, it is amazing that the waters off

Please Protect the Dolphin Ocean Park Conservation Foundation, Hong Kong (OPCFHK) has noticed several reported sightings of wild dolphin and human-dolphin interactions posted on social media recently. We would like to express our concerns on such activities. Close interaction with wild dolphins, including swimming with dolphins, feeding, touching or prolonged close proximity with them, can cause stress or injury to the animal. These activities will disturb their natural behavior such as predation, resting or socializing which eventually will affect their healthy natural behaviors. Interactions with humans can lower their vigilances which may draw them closer to propellers or shark net, resulting in injuries or even death. Additionally, since all wild dolphins are protected under the Wild Animal Protection Ordinance (Cap. 170), any person who contravenes the regulations of the Ordinance shall be liable on conviction to a maximum fine of HK$100,000 and to imprisonment for 1 year. The Marine Life Stranding Response Team of OPCFHK has been monitoring this dolphin. Since May this year there have been many sightings of a dolphin in Aberdeen Harbour and Deep Water Bay. Apparently it is a young male Black Dolphin which has been separated from its pod and has taken residence in the waters off our Middle Island Club House.

Middle Island have improved so much that marine life is moving back to make it their home. The big change came on 31 December 2012 when trawling in Hong Kong waters was banned. Up to then trawlers regularly fished in Deep Water Bay.

I hear you ask what is the Rifleman’s Bolt ? Actually it has nothing to Vertical Datum do with a fire arm. Rifleman stands for HMS Surveying Vessel Rifleman which was a British survey vessel that surveyed HK in 1866. A copper Bolt was set into the wall of the naval dockyard and the bolt was used as a datum for all levels in HK, both above and below water. The Rifleman’s Bolt was however removed many moons ago. However, I digress, even with the 4.35 metres of depth, the tide and the extra 0.15m difference in the Datum’s, members should be aware that when the moorings are first laid they will be sitting on the sea bed as they take time to dig themselves into the sea bed. The sinkers will sit 600mm above the sea bed.

Due to its construction the depths close to the sea wall are less than -4.35 which is due to the wall sitting on a base of rubble mound and bermstones.

The mooring equipment is brand new with new sinkers, chains, shackles and buoys

Kellett Golf Society’s Anniversary We had a very good turnout for the 30 th anniversary of the Kellett Golf Society on Thursday 12 December 2019. 22 players played a very pleasant social game of golf scoring on the Stapleford handicap index. We played the competition at Kau Sai Chau on the south course in marvellous weather and the course was in remarkably good condition. After the game we reconvened at the Shelter Cove Clubhouse for prize presentations and for an end of season Christmas dinner. This was also a very fun affair!

Congratulations to all.

Before the presentations, I took a few moments to mention the founders of the Kellett Golf Society 30 years ago. Namely: Chris Barr – Founded the Society Peter Arbon – Initial Convenor / Captain John Berry – Second Convenor Nikki Craig – Secretary / Treasurer

So in conclusion, a great milestone with lots of fun memories. Here is looking forward to an active year of golf next year. If you would like to join the Kellett Golf Society please email prdept@rhkyc.org.hk!

Ruby kindly contributed two of her prizes to the lucky dip which included a night away at Phoenix Hills sponsored by Patrick Yam. Many thanks Patrick! As it is the season of goodwill unto all, fittingly, each player agreed to contribute HK$200 to the RHKYC Charity Foundation. The foundations aim is to help underprivileged children in Hong Kong. Thank you to Ambrose Lo for helping to publicize the charity within the Club and for promoting the idea.

And of course a little history behind the Barr trophy! Many thanks to our captain, Chris Li, for organising the day. Not an easy task at the best of times. Also, thank you to Koko Mueller in the PR Department for her invaluable assistance. And so to the prize presentation: Winner: Tom Tam with 43 Stableford points Runner up on count back: Ruby Yim 40 points Closest to the pin 5th: David Leung Closest to the pin 11th: Simon Wong Closest to the pin into: Ruby Yim Longest drive 3rd: Ruby Yim Longest drive 14th: Patrick Sherriff

Settled in Poggio La Mozza, near Grosseto in Tuscany, Anna Maria and her family established the Val di Toro cellar in 2003. A passion and love for wine brought them to the Maremma area where they bought a farm and then picked the best possible venues for growing vine. They planted typical local varieties and insist on utilising as much manual work as possible out of respect for the environment. Originally on the land where the vineyard is now located, there were breeding farms of Maremma bulls, hence the name Val Di Toro and the adoption of a bull on the logo. Val Di Toro is also the name of the first wine produced, the Rosso della Maremma Toscana (their first harvest in 2006 was award winning!). In 2017, Anna’s Secret Rosé was the best selling rosé at the Club! Piandaccoli Wine Dinner Compass Room | Thursday 5 March Oral tradition reminds us of the Tenuta di Piandaccoli from the year 1000, being on the Via Francigena it was born as a hostel for pilgrims. It was that the monks began the cultivation of vines in these lands. In 1800s the Tenuta di Piandaccoli passed to the Dorin family to whom the development of today’s refrigerator is due and who implemented the cultivation of the vine. In 1950s, the estate already produced an excellent Chianti and manages to market its wines throughout Tuscany. The current owner of the estate is Dr Giampaolo Bruni who has invested commitment and energy to make the vineyards of Piandaccoli shine with

new life. In 2004, Dr Giampaolo Bruni defines a completely innovative project: to produce wines from native vines of Renaissance Tuscany. For this purpose all 20 hectares of vineyards are replanted. The first bottle of Inprimis is born in 2009, an extremely elegant and unique Tuscany blend with a Sangiovese base, combining Foglia Tonda and Pugnitello, two of the native vines. After years focused on the search for excellence in the creation of its products, the Estate manages to establish itself in more and more markets. The project to spread the value of native Tuscan vines continues, which is essential for safeguarding the biodiversity of the wine scene.

Menu and event details will be published on the Club website. For enquiries, please call Lizzy Tung in the F&B Office on 2239 0386 or email events@rhkyc.org.hk.

A Visit to Royal Cape Yacht Club W O RD S A ND IM AGES: J O HN A ND SUE C O ST EL LO ( A B SEN T MEMBERS)

S

ue and I visited Cape Town in early February 2019, arriving on a cruise ship from Ushuaia in Tierra Del Fuego, South America. We stayed in an apartment for a week, close to the harbour. Being summer in the southern hemisphere we had very pleasant weather, and we took the opportunity to visit the Royal Cape Yacht Club, a reciprocal club to the RHKYC. It is located close to the main port, to the west of the V&A Waterfront tourist area (Victoria & Alfred, not Albert – named to commemorate a visit by the Queen and her son Alfred who ceremoniously tipped the first truckload of rock into the sea to commemorate

the start of the construction of Cape Town’s harbour in 1868). The RCYC is just a 5 minute walk from the V&A. We arrived at the club’s entrance, presented our RHKYC letter of introduction and were very warmly greeted by the Club Secretary’s staff and given the run of the place. The Clubhouse is quite spacious, with a number of dining venues and extensive sailing and boatyard facilities. They have a fabulous figurehead from an old sailing ship decorating the wall of the club facing the harbour. The RCYC has adopted the slogan “Tavern of the Seas”, which is apparently the nickname given

to Cape Town in the days of sail, when ships passed around the Cape on their way to and from the Far East, and called in for provisions and R & R. Facing the yacht basin is a pair of substantial cannons very like those at the Buenos Aries Yacht Club, and quite a bit bigger than the RHKYC cannon! There is a large range of yacht and racing fleets based at the Club, and a large contingent of boats are signing up for the 2020 Cape to Rio race. The Club has a large bar and restaurant on the ground floor, and outside, directly overlooking the mooring area is a delightful covered outdoor lounge area, café and drinking area. We had a pleasant meal overlooking the yachts and, of course, sampled the local Cape wines – good measures! The Club’s shop also had a good line in sailing gear – hence the snappy RCYC shirt sported by yours truly. In summary, the Royal Cape Yacht Club is well worth a visit if you are passing through Cape Town. We were made to feel very welcome and had a pleasant time dining there and wandering around the facilities.
