Commodore’s Message

The Bridge

With the 2016-17 sailing season and Committee year behind us, there is no rest as the focus moves to 2017-18 – a year that is going to be a big one for the Club on all fronts. On top of the usual big Club events like the Around the Island Race, China Coast Regatta, and Hong Kong Race Week, together with the regular class sailing, the Club is organising the Optimist Asian & Oceanian Championships, together Commodore Robert Stoneley with the Zhik 29er Worlds. We 會長史東禮 will also be heavily involved in supporting the Volvo Ocean Race stopover. Please don’t wait to be asked if you’d like to help – we will need all hands on deck and as many volunteers as possible. In terms of rowing and paddling, plans are developing to build off the successes of this year. Amongst other things, to attract more overseas crews compete in the Around the Island Race and creating a related global 45km challenge, to enlarge the Harbour Regatta, and to try to figure out how to paddle a dragon boat around Hong Kong Island as a charity fundraiser without it sinking! It will also be the 20 th anniversary of the founding of Royal X Team, when the club’s dragon boat team

gained some new blood and started laying the foundations for the team that just won the Stanley Dragon Boat Championships for the 6th time in 10 years. Finally, on the Club front, I’m really pleased to be able to announce that the Regatta Ball will be coming back in November. With great new facilities like the Main Deck and our integrated kitchen now open and the Kellett Island Development project confined to one side of the club, we are able to hold our signature social event again so I’ve challenged the team to make this bigger and better than ever before. Watch this space for more details in due course… That’s all to come. In the meantime, if you are staying in Hong Kong this summer the popular St. James’s Sunset series continues every Friday night until 18 August. Even if you’re not sailing it’s a great opportunity to leave the office early and have some sundowners while watching the racing from the Main Deck or balcony! I’d also like to encourage those junior members to get involved with our summer rowing program including the four Summer Camps that we are running in both July and August. This is a great time to be on the water so please do get involved. Last but not least, good luck to our Shark sailors that are sailing in Europe this summer, to the paddlers competing in Langkawi and Tahiti, to Club member Kenny Liu who will be representing Hong Kong at the World Rowing Championships, and to everyone else who will be competing overseas through the summer.

General Manager’s Message

General Manager Mark Bovaird

Staying with the theme of rules, the new playroom and gym are proving to be very popular indeed and I would like to take this opportunity to remind members of some key points with regards to these facilities. The playroom is for children aged 7 and below who must be accompanied at all times by a member aged 18 or over. Also in the interest of the enjoyment of the facility by all members, please remember to help your children tidy up after they have finished playing. In the gym, please do remember to place your membership cards in the rack provided, make sure to return equipment to its designated place after use, and wipe down each piece of equipment after you are finished. 總經理布馬克

We also had Tim Chiu join, a crew member on one of the big boats, who shared his experience of cycling solo for nine months from Hong Kong to Spain. Although not sailing related, the participants clearly related to his very adventurous undertaking. After lunch, participants were divided into 5 groups. The owners of Getafix, Ma Cherie II, Zamzammah, Crystal and Talkinghead kindly each took a group out for the afternoon. Fortunately the skies cleared in the early afternoon to give a spell of sunshine and a fair breeze, and the participants were given lots of opportunities to try their hand at hoisting sails, grinding winches and helming the boats round Shelter Island. In the course of all this, an impromptu pursuit race took place and everyone had a most enjoyable time. n December last year, the Shelter Cove Sub-committee (SCSC) organized an introduction to sailing for Youth Outreach (YO), a charity which helps at-risk young people develop into responsible members of the community and help them rebuild self respect and self confidence. Following

a very successful event, the SCSC held a second event with YO on 9 April. The day dawned humid and misty, blanketing the waters in a light haze and no breeze to clear it. 14 young YO participants and five staff arrived at the Shelter Cove clubhouse in the morning and soon settled in to an

The feedback from YO has again been very positive and we look forward to organising more events with them. Our thanks go to our great staff at Shelter Cove, Gordon Liu, Tim Chiu, the owners and crew of Getafix, Ma Cherie II, Zamzammah, Crystal, Talkinghead and the RHKYC Charity Foundation. Feature | Spring Regatta he last major event of the 2016-2017 sailing season saw a total of 91 boats turn out for racing on 20 and 21 May. For Race 1, the start line was set off of Hung Hom in a patchy easterly breeze of 6 to 15kts. The J/80s and Sportsboats were the first to set off at 1350hrs, followed by the Etchells, Impalas, Flying Fifteens, Dragons, Ruffian, Pandoras and Big Boats in six minute intervals. All starts got away clean with Race Officer Barry Truhol sending the classes on 2.5 to 3.5 lap courses with distances of approximately 5.71nm to 8.75nm. The courses took the fleet up Victoria Harbour rounding either Shau Kei Wan or Tai Koo Shing, hoisting their kites and sending it down to round E2 or Dock Buoy, tacking up the harbour rounding Shau Kei Wan or Tai Koo Shing for the second time then back down to Dock Buoy with an upwind finish at Gate Buoy. The breeze built throughout the afternoon delivering a steady last run and beat to send the fleet home. Competitors donned wet weather gear for the second day of racing with drizzle and an easterly breeze of 8 to 10kts throughout the harbour. Race Officer Truhol got Race 2 underway at 1100hrs off Hung Hom with the J/80s and Sportsboats setting off first on a 7.42nm easterly course that took them towards Tai Koo Shing. There was a considerable tide running against the wind for the first starting sequence which posed

a bit of a challenge for the Sportsboats; pushing them over the line so much that a general recall was sounded.

Next to start were the Etchells and Impalas who were sent on 7.5nm course and the Flying Fifteens, Dragons, Ruffian and Pandoras who were sent on a 5.7nm course. The last starts, Big Boat Divisions 2 and 3, joined the J/80s and Sportsboats on their course and finally the Big Boat 1 division were sent on the longest course of 8.75nm. All other starts after the general recall got away cleanly except for one OCS in the Dragons. Throughout the first race the breeze continued to build with average of 10 to 14kts and gusts reaching 19kts. The strongest breeze hit most of the fleet when they were running towards Dock Buoy with broaches and a few spinnaker issues being witnessed on the course. For Race, 3 the final race of the regatta, longer courses were set for all divisions with 120 minute target times. There were a few pile ups as the fleet approached at Dock Buoy and rounded the spreader mark. As the race progressed the breeze died a little but even with the weakening breeze the classes were still able to finish within their projected target times. After racing, competitors congregated on the Main Lawn for the prizegiving with winners taking away engraved glassware and event sparkling wine presented by Gaastra. Results CLASS

16 boats came out for the 40th Anniversary of the 480nm San Fernando Race. Racing started on 12 April 2017 slightly east of Club’s regular Club start line due to a works area in the harbour. The warning signal for racing sounded at 1310hrs in 8 to 10kts of due east breeze. The fleet vied for position on the start line in a 10-minute start sequence with all boats getting away cleanly at 1320hrs.

until the breeze filled in again and kites were hoisted in Junk Bay.

he left side of the harbour seemed to pay off for the only Philippine entry in the race; Ernesto Echauz’s TP52 Standard Insurance Centennial as well as Hong Kong boats – the Custom Ker 42 Black Baza owned by Steve Manning and Anthony Root and the GTS 43 Mandrake III owned by Fred Kinmonth and Nick Burns allowing them to sneak up the fleet. As the fleet approached Lei Yue Mun, gains and losses were made as the wind dropped to 1 to 2kts and yachts tiptoed along

As the fleet left Hong Kong waters, a strengthening NE monsoon breeze built; with wind strengths from 20 to 25kts and lumpy sea states reported across the fleet. After three hours of racing Standard Insurance Centennial were in the lead position in IRC 0 and Overall, Black Baza was ahead of the IRC 1 fleet, Michael Ashbrook’s Jeanneau 479 Sitka was ahead in IRC Cruising and Tim Bruce’s Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 49 Diamond Queen was ahead in HKPN. At around 2000hrs Race Management noticed on the Yellowbrick trackers that Steve Ho’s Felci 45 Surfdude seemed to be returning to Hong Kong waters, once they arrived at Shelter cove it was confirmed that they retired due to halyard problems.

As the second day of racing came to an end there were a few small changes in the leader board including Anthony Day’s XC50 Explorer pulling ahead in the IRC Premier Cruising division. Standard Insurance Centennial was still in the lead in IRC 0 however Black Baza had snuck ahead and taken the IRC Overall from her. As the rest of the boats battled it out on the course Scallywag sailed into San Fernando, Philippines at 23:47:17hrs on the 14 April. As she subsequently retired from the Race, Sam Chan’s monohull race record of 49h 55m 12s set in 2001 remains. With the rest of the fleet closing in on San Fernando and the TP52s stuck in a bit of hole and a few of the 40s Black Baza and Ambush

The first boat through the Lei Yue Mun gap and subsequently out of view on the horizon was Hong Kong’s 100’ super maxi Scallywag owned by Seng Huang Lee. Scallywag’s crew no doubt had Sam Chan’s 2001 ULDB Sled, FfreeFire’s race record on their mind of 49h 55m 12s.

After the first night of racing and with the fleet nearing the Philippines, the navigators were no doubt were deciding on the best way to approach the coast and the light wind zone – the two T52s, Sam Chan’s FreeFire were positioned to the north of the rhumb line and Standard Insurance Centennial to the south as well as Black Baza to the north of Joachim Isler and Drew Taylor’s Mills 41 Ambush.

Feature | 40th Anniversary San Fernando Race close on their tails, the next day of racing would see gains and losses as many boats fell victim to holes off the Luzon coast. The TP52’s ended up racing in 28 minutes apart on Friday night with Philippines entry Ernesto Echauz’s TP52 Standard Insurance Centennial coming out on top over Sam Chan’s TP52 FreeFire, arriving at 20:12:16hrs and taking first place in the IRC 0 division. Arriving shortly after the TP52s, the first boat to sail across the line in the IRC 1 and subsequent winner of that division and IRC Overall was Black Baza who crossed the finish line at 21:20:24hrs, followed later by Ambush at 22:08:52hrs. Steve Manning commented on the racing. “The Race was spectacular. We had a great start leaving Hong Kong; we were in the front of the pack through to and past Waglan. Then as predicted the weather got very lumpy. We had a reasonably close reach the first night which was very uncomfortable but everyone held on to their stomachs. We had one of the most beautiful sails we have ever had last night, today and into the finish. Through a bit of the brain trust we managed to miss all

the major park ups and were able to keep us going all the time with no stops. We’re very happy with the results – how can we not be? Thank you to the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club for the huge effort that goes in before hand and for welcoming us as promised with beers for the crew.”

GTS 43 Mandrake III arrived in the early hours of Saturday morning at 06:09:14hrs, with the first boat from the IRC Premier Cruising division close on her heals; San Fernando Race Chairman’s boat Moonblue 2. Moonblue 2 had a difficult park up right before the finish and finally tip toed over the line at 08:32:53hrs.

Winner of the Premier Cruising division Anthony Day’s XC50 Explorer sailed in this afternoon at 13:55:40hrs. Zanzibar arrived on Saturday as well but retired due to lack of breeze. The sole double handed entry in the race Emocean2, Christopher Allan’s Swan 55, arrived at 18:42:12hrs. Christopher Allan was accompanied on board by long time offshore sailor Olivier Decamps. Emocean2 received 4th in the Premier Cruising division. Christopher Allan commented on the racing; “This was our first double handed race. It was a very challenging race to do it double handed in that the South China Sea throws everything at you in three days – calm weather, stormy weather, beautiful sunshine and still air. It was very interesting and we had to be ready for it all. We thought that sleep would be a challenge but it wasn’t really. We managed with the conditions because we prepared for it. When you’re sailing double handed you have to prepare early – you don’t do things at the last

minute, you reef early and sail to plan.” Olivier Decamps added “I would do it again. It was a really good race. There should be a class for double handed. Thank you to the Club for allowing us to do it.” A span of 51hrs separated the first boat to arrive and the last boat on Sunday morning. Michael Lunn’s Azuree 40FC Lion Rock sailed in at 02:18:10hrs, followed by Diamond Queen at 03:02:47hrs who took first in the HKPN division. Sadly Richard Winter’s Moody 46 Soko sailing in the HKPN division retired in the early hours of the morning due to light air. Peter Churchouse, San Fernando Race Chairman, summed up the 40 th edition; “There

were strong winds out of Hong Kong, 20 to 25kts, 2m seas, the usual pattern and absolutely gorgeous sailing and as you get halfway down the track, full moon sailing with the kite up, it was a classic San Fernando (and a classic Rolex China Sea Race for that matter). It’s the conditions we have come to love and expect over the 40 years of sailing in these races, so it fulfilled my expectations to a great extent. Since arriving in San Fernando the hotel has been terrific, great hospitality, the Philippines customs and immigration have been terrific and done exactly what they said they would do and have provided a great service and we should be very thankful for that.”

Moonblue 2 crew member Geoff Hill remarked on the race. “The first night was a bit tougher than the second night when we had 25 to 30kts. It was rough, but Moonblue 2 is a big boat so it was easy... easier than other boats I’ve sailed on. The second night was okay and after that it was fantastic sailing. We slowed down for an hour, then stopped for an hour and half just before the finish – pretty typical I would have to say. It all depends on when you arrive in San Fernando.”

The ever popular summer St. James’s Place Sunset Series continues throughout July and up to 18 August. The series is open to all and it’s never too late to join, don’t forget to sign on for each race. The course is usually in front of the Club but there may be variations due to the construction works in the harbour. As usual there will be a ‘crew available board’ for crew to sign up outside the Main Bar and you can always drop by the Sailing Office for assistance in finding a boat. After racing there will be beers and a prizegiving on the Main Lawn. A huge thank you to all of our sponsors for getting involved this year and for adding to the quality of the event by providing some amazing prizes for the weekly winners.

Sunshine Series There are just two Saturdays left of the Sunshine Series on 8 and 15 July – a relaxed Saturday afternoon race around fixed marks in the harbour. This is open to all classes with the usual sign-up procedure in the Course Room. Enjoy a great opportunity to get to know the harbour before the more competitive sailing events in the autumn season.

Race Management and Safety Team Volunteers The next season will be a busy time for the club as we are hosting a number of international events this year. Starting early October we will host the IODA Optimist Asian & Oceanian Championship, the 29er Nationals 27 to 29 December, Zhik 29er Worlds from 2 to 8 January, Volvo Ocean Race late January / early February and Hong Kong Race Week 20 to 25 February. In order to run these events we rely heavily on large numbers of members and non members who volunteer for either race management duty or the safety teams. You do not have to have any experience for some of the race management duties and we would never throw you into the deep end. Please do not hesitate to contact the sailing office if you would like further information on these events or on the volunteering roles. A full list of events that require volunteers can be found on our website: http://www.rhkyc.org.hk/events/volunteers2016.aspx?reg=show

Top of the Gulf Regatta

Results

W O RD S: G A BRIEL M A | PH OTO S: GU Y N OW EL L

he Top of the Gulf Regatta was held in Ocean Marina, Thailand from 5 to 7 May and the sun was shining on Pattaya whilst the Sharks team was racing over those few days. This year, the Sharks had 14 sailors competing in the regatta which was also the first time that the Club has had such a big Optimist team racing overseas. The regatta was held in advance of the Optimist World Championships and included 79 Optimists with sailors coming from all over the world including Costa Rica, France, and India. The first day was the qualification day which would select the sailors into two different fleets (the top 40 boats would go to Gold Fleet while the rest of the boats would be in Silver Fleet). The Sharks all tried their very best to make it to the Gold Fleet despite the tricky conditions. Some sailors made it to the Gold Fleet while the rest of the sailors were in very top rankings of the Silver Fleet. Our team did amazingly well on the 2nd and 3rd day by not only keeping their places, but also improving race by race. The grand regatta ending ceremony was held on the wide grassland beside Ocean Marina. We had all kinds of food provided by sponsors.

Three Peaks Outrigger Canoe Race W O RD S: RYA N W HEL A N | PH OTO S: M O RE CH AO S A ND L ESL E Y H O BB S

It was an extremely hot day with temperatures reaching 30° and with little swell to use on the water this made for challenging conditions. In keeping with tradition, we had some fun in choosing the Club’s teams names – this time using the names of the men’s Captains’ pets; Owen, Wilson and Montgomery. RHKYC’s Owen (pictured cat) team dominated the race finishing in 3:52.55 which broke the previous course record.

he Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club held the annual 3 Peaks Outrigger Canoe Race on Sunday 14 May involving six teams of paddlers who had to swim 100m to their canoes and then paddle a total distance of 24km. The race had each canoe paddle Repulse Bay, To Tei Wan and Shek O where two runners from each crew would run Violet Hill, Shek O Peak (Dragons Back) and Tai Tau Chau Pagoda respectively; a total of 12km.

Words from the Participating Teams:

RHKYC Wilson

Other crews were entered by Victoria Recreation Club, South Lantau Paddle Club and for the first time an international crew – Va’a Team France who flew in for the race. Given the heat and physical demand of this race, I would like to offer big congratulations to all teams for completing the race. We look forward to hosting next year’s race, in hopefully cooler conditions and with more teams so that we have more battles throughout each section of the race!

For me, three peaks is easily one of the best races on the calendar as it allows for two of my favourite sports; trail running and OC, to be combined into one morning. This the perfect way to sweat out four or so hours over the mountains and across the water. The competition is always fierce, and it usually ends up being a dog fight between first and second place. This year’s race brought hot weather with the clouds clearing after the first race; competitors found themselves fighting both the sun and the other clubs to get across the finish line in as short a time as possible. The transition from swimming to paddling to running then paddling is something that is always difficult to prepare for. Your body is trying to balance and juggle adrenaline with endurance and fatigue. Without a strong, cohesive crew, you’ll be lucky to cross the finish line! Until next time, Yacht Club. Jeremy Burton, VRC It was South Lantau Paddle Club’s honour and privilege to support RHKYC’s 2017 3 Peaks Race. We were keen to support Ryan and make an effort to enter a crew. Even though our decision to sign-up was probably beer-fuelled, we started to train as a crew 3 weeks before with various hikes, trailruns, swims and OC6 paddle sessions. The day’s conditions were unforgiving, especially the flat seas and high temperatures. To say this race is a real challenge would be an understatement, that’s for sure. We can’t tell you how much we enjoyed the race, and our Coaching / Skipper faculties are keen to include this event in to our target races for 2018 and beyond. We would urge any OC paddle-club to sign-up and get involved. This event is sure to grow.

On behalf of the SLPC 3 Peaks Race Crew. Iain Brymer, South Lantau Paddle Club Va’a Team France Singapore were excited to participate in our very first outing at the RHKYC 3 Peaks Race this year, and it definitely did not disappoint. Sending our development squad over we were a little worried with the lack of hills to train on in Singapore not to mention the bigger waves and swell of Hong Kong Island. But on the day a mix of adrenaline and energy bars saw us through to the end, even after a few wrong turns up Shek O Peak! As a visiting team, we were taken aback by not only the breathtaking views while paddling but also the warmth of the Hong Kong Clubs. In particular our hosts from RHKYC were incredibly welcoming especially Ryan and Nick who taught a few things about post-race celebrations Hong Kong style. When we returned to Singapore, and after RHKYC shared a few great pics from the race, we were really impressed by the surge of interest and questions from our sister clubs here in Singapore. I believe this race is becoming truly international, expect more teams from Singapore next year guys! Hugh Passmore, Va’a Team France

Paddlers of Po Toi: Dragon boat racing with the fishermen Rowing W O RD S: RO B O W EN | PH OTO S: GIA NNI A P RE A

o the uninitiated, dragon boat racing in Hong Kong means corporate teams competing for one day in Stanley in late May or early June. Those with a little more know-how may be aware of more serious races in Deep Water Bay, Lamma Island or Victoria Harbour. However, to get to know the real dragon boat scene you need to add in the secret ingredient, the life and soul of Hong Kong – the fishermen! Every season, the Royal X dragon boat team joins forces with the Bearables fishermen to take part in various fishermen races around Hong Kong, and as a new joiner to the team I was intrigued by the prospect of paddling with these local legends. An early start was required to catch the 0700hrs fishing trawler from Chai Wan down to Po Toi, but it was well worth it for the pleasant early morning cruise past Big Wave Bay and Shek O. Where the fishermen go, their dragon boat goes too – a stylish teak boat clung to the side of the trawler, longer and slightly narrower than our own carbon fibre boats, with room for 24 paddlers.

in the boat while warming up before one race – perhaps a tactic we can look to incorporate into our own race day routine! Once the racing was done we were able to sit back, relax and enjoy a few cans of Knight Special lager with our hosts on the return trip to Chai Wan. A big thank you to our kind and gracious hosts, the Bearables for sharing their home, dragon boat, paddles and food with us and to our coach Lister Woo for giving us access to these special events. Spending a day on a fishing trawler and paddling with the fishermen was a wonderful cultural experience and we look forward to teaming up with our friends again in the near future.

Approaching Po Toi, there were no signs of life until we rounded a corner which revealed a scene like something out of Pirates of the Caribbean – a small fleet of fishing trawlers anchored in a bay, each decorated with large, colourful flags. We had arrived at the Brethren Court of the Hong Kong fishermen! After a few rituals and ceremonies, the races kicked off around midmorning. Our trawler had two crews – a men’s crew made up entirely from the ranks of the fishermen and a mixed crew combining Royal X team members with paddlers from our hosts. Each race was started with a horn followed by cries of “Yat! Yee! Sam!” from the crews as they used the first few strokes to get the heavy wooden boats up and running. The wooden boats may be heavier than we are used to and take a lot of effort to get moving, but once they get going they really glide through the water and can be difficult to slow down after the finish line! Also different is the fishermen’s paddling technique – while we focus on keeping our heads up and rotating the upper body/torso, the fishermen keep their heads down and use a lot of shoulder. After a couple of races for each of our crews it was time for lunch – a buffet of fresh squid, congee, fish balls, chicken wings and barbecued pork, all laid on by our kind hosts and served on the lower deck of the trawler. More races followed in the afternoon and we were even lucky enough to get caught up in the traditional eye-dotting ceremony during which each of the four dragon boats involved received another giant flag. As the day wore on, the sun and the races started to take their toll on our fishing friends and they were spotted enjoying a few cigarettes JUL/AUG 2017 AHOY! |

he Royal X returned to the Cheung Chau race this year with a men’s and a mixed entry, double of what we have entered in previous years. We had just enough paddlers to fill the two crews meaning some of the men had to do nine races in four or five hours! The schedule at this event was packed meaning the crews had to endure several back to back races. We quickly learned that it would not be physically possible to fully compete in both event categories by doing that many back to back races. So with this in mind, after the first two rounds, we made a decision to focus on the mixed team. We came 3rd overall in the final, not bad going up against fishermen’s ‘Lamborghini’ with our ‘Prius’! However, the importance of these types of races is not the results; it’s about embracing the local fishermen culture. This year we have been training the team with a unique standup paddle stroke due to the Cheung Chau race being a ‘freestyle’ race. The progress was less than ideal but one of the paddlers (against the odds) did actually stand in the final which caused shock, surprise and admiration from the race commentator who announced his surprise to see a non-local paddler do this. Fantastic weather and the friendly people confirms the fact that Cheung Chau has always been the best fishermen race that we enter.

Typhoon Advice W O RD S: SIM O N PICKERIN G

is worth noting that nylon line loses strength and abrasion resistance over time. Failure can often occur as a result of the fibres of an old line chafing against themselves rather than against the rail of the boat or fairlead. • Never use chain or low stretch line to connect to the buoy. Shock loads can be very high and it is not uncommon for boats using chain (in the false belief that it is stronger) to have their deck cleats ripped out. Consider using purpose-made ‘shock absorbing’ lines or add on shock absorbers to the mooring lines. If the anchor is on the bow roller, ensure that the mooring lines cannot chafe against it. If it is a problem, remove the anchor. • Check the shackle from the mooring lines to the swivel and that the swivel is in good condition and rotating freely – if in doubt, replace it. • Consider fitting a second set of lines or line as an emergency back up – these should be slacker than the working lines and anchor to an alternative strong point on deck. Never secure a mooring line to the base of a deckstepped mast or to any standard rigging. Consider using the primary winches as anchor points. • Ensure that the helm is securely lashed amidships. • Ensure all hatches and lockers are securely dogged down and that there is no loose gear on deck (Liferafts, EPIRBS, horseshoe rings, danbuoys etc). • Ensure that the cockpit drains are clear and auto bilge pump (if fitted) is working. Heavy rain has sunk more than one boat. • Remember that whilst we try to keep the sampans running for as long as possible, the sampan service may be curtailed in the event of severe weather. • Keep an eye on the weather and make your preparations early. It is no fun trying to get a roller furler off the boat in 40Kts! Marine

The typhoon season is now upon us and we have just experienced the first Signal 8 for the year for a ‘named storm’. I followed this storm closely as it sprung up almost out of nowhere while I was providing shore support for two yachts that were at sea on delivery between Hong Kong and Subic Bay. One of these yachts was experiencing NE 50 knots with 10m waves when the models showed NE 30 knots with 3.5m waves. They survived to tell the tale and I learnt that I am not a weather expert. Therefore as the storm approached Hong Kong even though still only listed as a Tropical Storm we started to prepare for a Signal 8 Typhoon tying down all the yachts in the boatyard and on the hard standing. At all our facilities we noticed that virtually no vessel owners personally made any effort to take necessary and suitable precautions to protect their vessel and vessels moored adjacently against damage by storm and typhoon. Perhaps the use of online computer modeling has falsely turned us all into weather experts and we have developed a false sense of security because we consider the information as accurate? I repeat parts of a June 2007 Ahoy article detailing simple measures that owners of vessels on moorings should consider when a storm is approaching. • Make sure that your pleasure vessel licence is up to date – an expired licence would automatically invalidate your insurance. Check your insurance policy with reference to any special terms for “named wind storms” and that your mooring location is included in the policy. • Ensure roller furling headsails, mainsails, boat covers, biminis and canvas are removed and stowed below decks. Insurance is unlikely to cover damage to canvas if left on deck. Also the additional windage can seriously affect the loads on the mooring. • Check mooring lines for chafe / UV damage and replace if at all concerned. Fit chafe protection where the lines cross over the deck or through chocks. It

The M4 team also had a good start to the playoffs, beating Wako 4-1. Next they will take on Jaws, who we have had some tough battles with over the past four seasons to see who gets to take on the USRC in the final. Having just missed the cuts for play-offs, the Main League Div 15 team organised an informal handicap tournament to mark the close of their season. A last minute adjustment to the handicaps by Max Von Poelnitz made for some great competition, but also his own

Winter League The playoffs have begun and both of our Masters teams are involved. Finishing top, the Masters 1 team made short work of the HKCC M1 team in the first week of the finals. Winning 4-0 they now go though straight through to the final where they will play the winner of HKCC and the in-form Hong Kong Club.

early elimination. Of the seven players, Nike Soderberg, Roger Dunn, Yannick Kennel and Adrian Pierse faced off in the semi-final. There was a controversial group decision to increase Nike’s handicap just before the final match. This lead to a heated final match against Yannick. Despite the ‘double handicap,’ Nike managed to persevere in a narrow five set final – the second time this season Yannick has come out on the wrong end of a handicap final. The tournament was followed by a bit of F&B and good conversation in the Bistro.

Box League In Box A Paul Denham returned to go undefeated and finish top with 15 points. Andrew Sullivan was second with 8. The B in Box B this month stood for the Bermuda Triangle. Whatever matches were played seem to have disappeared from the face of the earth. Box C was hotly contested, with Roger Dunn coming out on top with 15 points. Angelo Iannazzo was a close second with 13.

Kellett Golf Society W O RD S: CHRIS LI

Kellett Golf Society at Deep Water Bay, 25 May 2017

Hey Lonny, “Don’t leave any meat on the bone!”

fter two months and with Captain Patrick still on vacation, the KGS needed an outing! With the help of Circle Chair from PR & Communications Department, we scheduled a game at the Hong Kong Golf Club. This time we tried something new…or something “old”…the Deep Water Bay golf course located at Hong Kong Island south. It is the oldest golf club in Hong Kong having opened back in 1898. Though many of you may have paseds by this “small”golf course thousands of times, for a few of us this is the first time to play there. The weather forecast was disappointing for the start but the day turned out great with sunny periods. It was a bit different to golf at Deep Water Bay; it’s a walking course – only three players can join together in one flight, most holes were par 3s with only one par 4 to complete nine holes. We needed to play two rounds of 9 to finish 18. Fairways are relatively flat, greens were small, fast and steep, and we often ended with 3 putts or more. Regardless of my awful score, I enjoyed very much the landscape and view here, not to mention the club house restaurant was also superb. The day ended early with plenty of time to spare, I decided to go back to work... for my next game. JUL/AUG 2017 AHOY! |

Founded in 1756 by a Royal Charter of King José I, King of Portugal, under the auspices of his Prime Minister the Marquis of Pombal, the Real Companhia Velha, also known as Royal Oporto Wine Company, is the oldest port wine company of Portugal. Located in Vila Nova de Gaia facing Porto, the cellars’ proximity to the sea, offers the natural climatic conditions that are essential for the ageing process of this sublime nectar, valued for the aged colour and velvety texture on the palate, result of a natural ‘oxidation’ development: the mysterious process of breathing through the pores of the oak. With wide selections of Port Tawny wines – aged in noble oak barrels – as well as Vintage Port, and its 261 years of uninterrupted activity, Real Companhia Velha has developed a worldwide reputation for its distinguished wines. The importance of this Ex-Majestic Company is also reflected by the valuable services to the community with influence in the regulation, production and trade of Port Wine, make the Company’s history an important part of the history of Port Wine as well. We bring you the classiest of our Champagne wine dinners with live dinner dance entertainment so you can dancethe night away. Dom Pérignon is a brand of vintage Champagne produced by the Champagne house Moët & Chandon, and serves as that house’s prestige Champagne. The brand was named after a Benedictine monk, Dom Pierre Pérignon, who was an important quality pioneer for Champagne wine. “Come quickly! I am drinking the stars,” were cellar master Pérignon’s supposed words when he first sipped the effervescent elixir we now know as champagne. Contrary to popular myth, he did not discover the Champagne method for making sparkling wines, but for white wine, yet, he established the principles of modern Champagne making that are still in use today.

Obituary Peter Fulton Arbon – 27 February 1947 to 4 April 2017 Peter very sadly passed in Brisbane Australia after a typically courageous 8 month fight with cancer. Longtime RHKYC big boat sailor – later notorious Hobie club skipper and Kellett Golf Society Founder- Member and long-serving, doubtless Best-Captain-Ever, ‘Pedro’ quietly crossed the bar during the First Watch on 4 April. He will be remembered for his determination, engineering, sailing and golf skills and especially his sly sense-ofhumour. His late-night stamina in the various post-race dives and 19th holes so very many of us shared with him were legendary. Survived by wife Lolita and daughters Felicia and Natasha. Condolences to gatchalianlolita@yahoo.com. Full Obituary at iandubin/wordpress.

Michael Gurdon Palin – Michael passed away peacefully on Thursday, 11 May 2017 in the New Forest, UK. Dearly loved husband of Libby and devoted father of Olivia and Amanda. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends in the UK, in Hong Kong and around the world. Service of Thanksgiving at All Saints Parish Church, Milford on Sea, on Thursday, 25 May at 1430hrs, following a private cremation earlier in the day.
