Commodore’s Message Thank you to everyone who turned out for the Electoral General Meeting on 13 June which was not easy due to traffic disruption stemming from the demonstration down at Admiralty. My particular thanks to those that put themselves forward for nomination to serve our Club. Congratulations to those that were elected and we look forward to all committees being formed soonest and embarking on another successful season for the Club. With the sailing of the Tomes Cup finally behind us, our congratulations go to Drew Taylor and Joachim Isler / Ambush for lifting the Tomes Cup (a day after their win in the first Sunset Series of the season) and to Frank Van Kempen / King of the Pin for taking the top spot in the Top Dog Trophy Series 2018-2019.

Commodore John Woo

會長胡祖榮

Despite not having much going in term of sailing after May, the Club’s community service work is going strong. Thank you to the Shelter Cove Sub-committee who took disadvantaged youth out for a sail on 30 June – this time they invited youth from St. James’ Settlement. Our own RHKYC Charity Foundation are also organising their seventh annual Charity Sailing and Paddling Day on 4 August. The Middle Island Sub-committee also organised a beach cleanup at Round Island at the beginning of June. We look forward to their reports in a future issue of Ahoy! A big cheer and thanks to those who volunteered to run the race management at the annual Stanley Dragon Boat Races. They showed strong dedication working a 10-hour day from 0730hrs to 1730hrs. As for rowing and paddle sports, our congratulations go to the Club’s Royal X dragon boat team for winning the Women’s, Men’s and Mixed categories at their first attempt in Tai Po District Dragon Boat Race held on Tuen Ng Festival Day. Our congratulations also go to all the rowers who competed at the Shing Mun Regatta One on such a hot yet windy day! Looking forward to August, please join me in wishing all the very best of luck to our members who are representing Hong Kong at the World Dragon Boat racing Championships in Pattaya, Thailand and at the World Distance Championships outrigger canoe event in Mooloolaba, Australia. Last but not least, this summer many of our youth sailors from the Sharks squad are heading overseas for some essential international competition experience – have a look at the box on this page for details of which events they are competing in. I wish the best of luck to everyone racing oversea. May I wish everyone to have a lovely summer break with your family.

「2018-2019 年Top Dog 盃帆船聯賽」冠軍得 主是舵手 Frank Van Kempen 的「King of the Pin 號」。

General Manager’s Message Now that the Tomes Cup has finally been put to bed after being rescheduled twice, we can finally say that the summer season has begun! The Sunset Series on Friday evenings is going strong with 30 boats out in the harbour in week one, it’s just a pity that the wind did not cooperate for racing – but the after party was well attended with the DJ adding to the great atmosphere on the Main Deck.

General Manager Mark Bovaird

Whilst it’s a Spanish wine dinner in the Compass Room on 4 July, don’t worry we will also be celebrating America’s Independence Day with a Texas BBQ at Middle Island. Grab your Stetson and see you there (note that there will be an extra sampan service from Deep Water Bay). Bookings open on 9 July for what was our fastest sell out event of last year – The ‘Mussel Party’. This year it will be bigger and better than ever and is being held on 17 August and at only $98 for all of the mussels, selected Les Jamelles wine, French fries, salads and French bread you can manage, it’s no wonder it’s so popular. This year we are aiming to break a world record and we are expecting at least 800 people to join us! Don’t forget to book early to avoid disappointment. With GenCom’s approval, we are on 1 July embarking on a six month trial period of taking table reservations at Middle Island and Shelter Cove for lunch Monday to Friday and dinner Monday to Thursday (except public holidays). The total quota of seats that can be reserved each day is capped at 20 indoors and 30 outdoors. Each member account is limited to 11 guests. Reservations will be on a first come first served basis and there is a no show charge of $100 per head for lunch and $150 per head for dinner. Here’s something new and fun… from 11 July to the end of August we have disco bowling here at Kellett Island. Surely that speaks for itself! As they say, “dance like no one is watching you”. Also new are the latest additions to the Bistro a la carte menu which have been very well received and starting from 2 and 3 July we will have new additions to the Compass Room and Sports Bar a la carte menus too. I look forward to seeing you at the Club.

For the wine and champagne aficionados, of which there are many of you, we bring you the La Rioja Alta Wine Dinner on 4 July featuring Spanish wines from a 129 year old winery. Our exceedingly popular Cloudy Bay Wine Dinner is back on 26 July showcasing the wines that for many around the world, put New Zealand firmly on the map as a serious wine producer. In August we turn to a very special black tie event with Champagne by Dom Perignon along with live music to make it a very memorable evening indeed. All the details can be found on page 41.

Feature | Spring Regatta he Club’s annual Spring Regatta was held over the weekend of 11 and 12 May to officially close off the Club’s 2018-2019 sailing season. An auspicious number of 88 boats signed up for the two days of racing with one race held on the Saturday and two races held on the Sunday. Each race had nine separate starts. The bulk of the racing fleet were one-design classes; Dragons, Etchells, Flying Fifteens, Impalas, J/80s, Ruffians and Pandoras. The rest of the fleet comprised four sportsboats and 26 big boats (with the big boats being split into three divisions). Keeping an eye on all of this well-organised chaos was Race Officer Barry Truhol and his dedicated team of volunteers. Saturday kicked off with blue skies, fantastic sunshine and a decent breeze of 7 to 8kts. To the delight of the racers, the breeze had built to JUL/AUG 2019 AHOY! |

12 to 14kts by the time they reached the start line. RO Barry looked at the playbook and with the great weather, extended the courses a little; targeting to have the boats out racing for around two hours. Six race tracks in the eastern portion of the harbour were utilised and a longer course was set for Big Boat Division 1 which took them out of the harbour towards Siu Sai Wan and back. All finishes converged back in the harbour at the same point between North Point and Kai Tak.

In the Etchells fleet Racer X / Mark Thornburrow maintained his top position throughout the weekend with a 1st, 4th and 1st place finish in his three races. “We had a very good day.” said Mark and “ We had fantastic wind which kicked in for the second race. It was sunny and warm – in fact the whole Spring Regatta was fantastic, perfect!” Frederic Azemard was similarly happy with his top place finish sailing his Dragon, Wudi. Azemard scored three bullets across the weekend, commenting “The conditions were probably the best we have ever had at a Spring Regatta. Great weather, good wind, a bit of tactics as it was a little shifty and there was a little current but we really enjoyed it.” The 2019 Spring Regatta was sailed in superb conditions and nicely brings to a close another successful season for the Club which our Rear Commodore Sailing, Lucy Sutro, reflected upon “The Club has seen a very successful season with a record number of boats participating in most of the Club’s events. If I had to pick some highlights I would pick the recent Ladies Helm race (a record number of female helms), China Coast Regatta (some great racing for the big boats) and finally Hong Kong Race Week, which just goes from strength to strength.” Looking forwards, Lucy added “Next season we see the return of the Rolex China Sea Race, our blue-ribbon offshore race, where we watch with interest to see if the record set at the last race will stand. For the classes we will be introducing a new format for the Class Regatta which will have the classes racing against each other in a team racing format – Inter Class Festival. Details are still to be finalised, so watch this space!” The prizegiving was held at the end of the two days of racing and was, as ever, a wellattended celebratory event. Commodore John Woo said “Without the support of our many volunteers, this event would not be possible. It takes approximately 20 volunteers each day to make the Spring Regatta possible by helping with Race Management, safety and the Protest Committee. I am sure you will join me in thanking them all for giving up their valuable time to ensure success of the event. I would like to thank all our sponsors: St. James’s Place, Solaris Yachts, Peroni, Mumm Champagne, Lillet, Skin Laundry, ETA Logistics and Sail World for their commitment to this event and hope to welcome them back to the Club in the future.” Prize Winners

Sailors returned for the second day of racing on the Sunday hoping for more of the same conditions and whilst the wind was evident, it was proving to be difficult. “The third race was especially challenging because the wind dropped. We set shorter courses and then the breeze picked up and everyone ended up finished at around the two hour mark that I had been aiming for.” said Barry, adding “Otherwise, apart from the issues one has to deal with having that number of boats on the water, it’s been a fantastic weekend.”

Feature | Luxury Lodges of New Zealand Ladies Helm Day

Luxury Lodges of New Zealand Ladies Helm Day The Luxury Lodges of New Zealand Ladies Helm Day was held on Saturday 4 May. Not one sailor that we could see wore pink and the only diva on the start line was an Etchells named Diva Deux – one of an impressive 57-strong fleet of boats competing across seven classes.

W O RD S: KO KO MUEL L ER | IM AGES: IS A A C L AW REN CE

n recent years the various classes within the Club have separately held their own ladies races; albeit at different times of the year. The genesis of this bigger all-encompassing event came last year when the classes decided to band together to have their ladies races scheduled on the same day. Many of the sailors that we talked to agreed this was a good move. One of those we spoke to was Violette Fung who was helming Etchells, Shrub who said “I think it’s a really good thing that the Club pulled together the ladies helm races from across the classes into one big event. We all saw how well it worked for the first time last year where everyone had a lot of fun and that’s why this year we are seeing more sailors take part.” The event comprised two races for each class. The first race of the day lasted about an hour in a good steady 12kts of breeze across the harbour along with white caps and light rain. The J/80s, Sportsboats, Etchells and Impalas were sent on easterly course #306 which started

the fleet in the harbour between North Point and Hung Hom and then sending them eastwards to Shau Kei Wan, back down to Kowloon Bay and a short leg eastwards again to end just off the old Kai Tak runway. Race Officer Brenda Davies described the Etchells’ first start as “enthusiastic” after four of them went over early at the start and only two of them coming back. There were also a few work orders for the Boatyard! The remaining classes were designated an easterly course #328; also starting in the harbour between North Point and Hung Hom, this course took the fleets eastwards as far as Tai Koo Shing, back down half way to the start, up again to Tai Koo Shing and then also finishing off the old Kai Tak runway. As soon as the boats got back to the start area, the sequence for Race 2 got going. The Sportsboats and J/80s were sent off on course #304

which saw them doing two laps around Shau Kei Wan. The Etchells followed suit on the same course, with a clear start this time. The Impala fleet then got going on course #325 which was sending them around Tai Koo Shing. The Flying Fifteens and Dragons also sailed around Tai Koo Shing and then the last to start were the Ruffians and Pandoras on a simple one-lap course around Shau Kei Wan. The wind held in and the tide turned into a slack tide. There were a few lulls but sailors enjoyed an average of about 12 to 14kts across the race area. The races were a little bit shorter allowing the fleets to finish closer to the Club. There were some very close finishes as there had been in Race 1. Brenda was pretty happy how the day went, saying “It was good harbour racing today and it was a good day out for everyone.” The event encouraged female sailors of all experience levels to take part. Adrienne Walder helming Etchells, Quest, said “I entered because I felt it was about time I pushed myself a little bit more JUL/AUG 2019 AHOY! |

because I’ve done a lot of sailing in the past but I’m not a natural racer, I’m quite a nervous person and so I thought that I would give it a go. The reason why I’ve done this event is because I’ve been assured that it’s all done in a friendly, fun spirit. I’ve also got a few friends helming other boats, so it’s made taking part seem a bit less daunting.” Adrienne sailed with her husband, David, as well as Marty Kaye. It was agreed for the sake of the Walder marriage that whilst Adrienne would of course helm, Marty would be the one in charge and share his expertise. This worked out well as the Walders are still happily married. Also in the Etchells fleet was last year’s champion, Nagisa Sakai who “it’s like normal racing but with a twist, a fun twist.”

18

| JUL/AUG 2019 AHOY!

Two ten year olds took part and exhibited no signs of nerves at all before the start. Demelsa Williams is no stranger to the event - having won in the Flying Fifteen class last year when she was only nine and again clinching the Flying Fifteen title this year. Demelsa was one of the first helms down on the pontoon before racing and when we asked her who was the boss on board, she replied without any hesitation “I am” and proud Dad, Howard, gave the thumbs up. Over in the Etchells fleet, the youngest helm of the day by a few months was Emily Polson who was looking forward to her first time helming an Etchells. Dad James told us that the start was going to be their biggest challenge “we have to start like an Etchells, not like an Optimist!” but in the end it was all good.

The Club’s Rear Commodore Sailing, Lucy Sutro (who was also of course competing) said “Despite the fact that women make up approximately half of the Club’s membership, the average turnout for normal class racing is probably only 10 to 20% women. We need to do more to actively encourage women to get out sailing and this is a day to celebrate that girls also sail; not just the boys. In every race on every weekend there will be people who take this stuff very seriously and really, really want to win and there are other people who are out there just to enjoy

themselves and it’s absolutely fine to be in the latter group. And that is basically what sailing should be all about; when it becomes too competitive, it can be very daunting for people, particularly newbies and my tip for them don’t be nervous; it’s just a day’s sailing in the harbour. I look forward to this event growing in the future and I’d also like to see more girls, and indeed more newbies, in every day class racing. “ If there was a ‘Super Mum’ award that day it would surely have been won hands down by Hannah Lee who, given the long day on the water, managed to express milk for her seven week old son, Leonardo, in between races. Said Lee, “This event is great because it shows you that it’s just as good when women are helming though I have to say I always helm my boat and I did much better today than when I sail with my normal crew so I don’t think it’s the helm this time!“ After racing, a prizegiving was held at the Club with none other than world-renowned female sailor Tracy Edwards, MBE, distributing prizes for the winner of each class. Edwards was in town to promote her charity, The Maiden Project.

In the Ruffian fleet, Hilda Loong on board Miss Piggy was very much looking forward to getting out on the water having just had knee surgery and missing the entire season so far. Said Loong “Miss Piggy is my mother ship and I really want to helm for Ladies Helm Day. It’s great that the Club is doing an event so that all female sailors get to helm.” Fellow competitor and regular helm in the J/80 fleet Belinda Ng sailing JeNePaBe agreed saying “I think it’s great to have all female helms racing against each other even though we are in different classes. We’ve only got four boats in our class today which is a real shame I think. There’s definitely scope for the event to grow.”

Today, sailing is a huge part of my life; as a family, my husband, son and I spend every other weekend pleasure sailing around Hong Kong. A favourite spot is anchoring off High Island and spending the afternoon having a seafood lunch! We also like to spend a lot of time around the Club which is our home away from home. My son learned to walk in the Main Bar (!), we had our wedding reception in the Compass Room and have had numerous parties here over the years so it features a lot in our family photos! The Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club is a prestigious award winning sailing club with a true community and impressive history in Hong Kong. I’m proud to be an active member and pleased the values of my company and RHKYC are so aligned – community spirit, honesty in life and on the water, and of course a sense of fun!” Describe your role at St. James’s Place... “Any good sailor knows small mistakes lead to big problems on a boat. A small leak or an unchecked rig can be catastrophic in bad weather or big seas. It’s the same for finances. Small issues not dealt with such as not saving regularly or not planning for the future by doing something as simple as writing a temporary guardianship and a will can lead to big problems later. My job is to encourage my clients to think about these financial issues. This includes future tax planning, protecting their families and businesses as well as creating platforms for future wealth. It’s a role I take very seriously and am so grateful to have built my business on personal recommendations.”

he ever-popular summer Sunset Series kicked off Friday 31 May with 29 boats out on the water. In all, 12 races make up the series and the event is open to all and an excellent excuse to start the weekend early. For the third year running, St. James’s Place Wealth Management has taken up the mantle of title sponsor. We took the opportunity to catch

Tell us about your sailing history... “My first sailing memories are from my days as a girl guide in Northern Ireland. 12 years ago I picked it up again and completed an adult sail training course.

We are now very thrilled to announce that St. James’s Place have agreed to continue their relationship with the Club for a further four years! n amazing end to an amazing season, saw continued dedication and commitment from the Ruffian fleet. The end of year prizegiving was attended by almost 120 people in the Regatta Room this year, which provides an excellent venue. A big thank you to the Club’s banqueting team for looking after us all so well. There were big fancy dress efforts across the board to fulfill the Underwater / Hollywood theme, including a shiver of sharks and a cast of crabs, with the ‘best dressed’ prize going to the crew of Miss Piggy.

The evening was also a celebration of the Ruffians’ 45th year in Hong Kong, with specially engraved glasses and a commemorative spinnaker by Wilfer sails that was auctioned to great gusto. Congratulations to Brigand for winning and we look forward to seeing the spinnaker flying at the front of the fleet next season!

24

| JUL/AUG 2019 AHOY!

The music was played throughout the evening by the live band made up from members of the Helios crew – truly a multi-talented set of sailors.

A big thank you to the rest of the fleet as well, with most Ruffians achieving a 100% turnout for the Ladder races! Without this full fleet, we cannot have the winners.

The main part of the evening saw the results dominated by Victory 9, who were overall Ladder winners and winners of the Chairmans, Frostbite, Rogue and Spring series, as well as first Ruffian in the Lipton Trophy. Victory 9 were also winners of the new Ruffian Top Dog trophy for first Ruffian in the Top Dog series.

The Ruffian class has also put in continued effort with newbies this year, including an Open Day, to bring in sailors (non-members as well as members) with limited sailing experience and training them up. The newbie journey includes practical racing experience plus learning the theory through two ‘rules nights’ that were held to sharpen knowledge throughout the fleet. It is great to see interest expressed by these newbies in joining the club and to continued participation in Ruffian Racing!

Scallywag also had an excellent season, coming a close second in the overall Ladder. Scallywag was successful in the Club trophy races too, coming first Ruffian in both the Autumn Regatta and HKRNVR. Larrikin was third in the overall Ladder and were also this year’s Ruffian Class Champions, after some very close and competitive racing in Lamma in December, followed by the Ruffian Christmas party at Middle Island.

So an amazing end to an amazing season, demonstrating the Ruffians can party hard just as well as racing race hard! The Ruffian committee wishes everyone a great summer of racing and is already looking forward to next year’s Ruffian Racing season.

RHKYC and HHYC Big Boat Monsoon Series W O RD S: JA MES LID BURY | IM AGE: TAOZI _ 0 07

Sailing

his sailing season the Big Boat Class Committee was pleased to hold the second annual Monsoon Series in conjunction with Hebe Haven Yacht Club. The Monsoon Series combines what was formerly the RHKYC Spring Cup with the former HHYC Winter and Spring Saturday Series. Results from the new Monsoon Winter Series 2018, the Monsoon Spring Series 2019, and the Monsoon Spring Cup 2019 were combined as the Monsoon Series 2018-19. The Monsoon Series, held during the winter months from November through May when the wind is at its best, is a combination of geometric and island courses, which caters to the diverse strengths of the Big Boat Class. It also challenges the competitors to adapt to a variety of conditions and tactical situations. The island courses, especially, are great opportunities to enjoy the beautiful natural environment in and around Shelter Cove. Monsoon Series results are calculated using the Cox-Sprague (1994 modified) scoring system, using the results published by the organizing authority of each race. The CoxSprague scoring system awards points not only for the place in each race, but also the number of races the boat participates in over the series. The more the boat participates, the higher chance the boat has of placing in the overall Monsoon Series. The Monsoon Series is also an encouraging example of cooperation with all our friends in the sailing community. RHKYC and HHYC take alternating turns managing the Monsoon Series races and whichever club manages the series also assists the Dragon and Sportsboat Saturday racing series. Both clubs jointly promote the series to get maximum participation. All the hard work and inter-club coordination has paid off with strong participation and some great racing. This season’s Monsoon Series saw a total of 40 boats competing, a 43% increase from the previous year, nearly evenly split between IRC and HKPN divisions. In the IRC Division, Talkinghead took the overall win, with Outrageous and X-Terminator joining them on the podium in second and third places, respectively. In the HKPN Division, Temujin took the overall win, with Ichiban in second and LoTech in third place. Looking ahead to the 2019-2020 sailing season, the Big Boats Committee will be

introducing a new Harbour Series to be run in conjunction with the Club’s normal class racing in the Harbour. There have been relatively few opportunities for big boat racing in the Harbour in recent years and we’re excited

to offer this new series to fill the gap. Ten racing dates have been scheduled to share race management resources with the existing Harbour racing and to avoid overlap with other big boats racing in Hong Kong.

The Big Boat Class Committee would like to thank the international law firm of Ropes & Gray for continuing its generous sponsorship of our fleet for the second year in a row.

Looking Back: The 2018/19 Etchells Season W O RD S: S C OTIA RY ER | IM AGE: GU Y N OW EL L

Sailing he Hong Kong Etchells fleet had another tremendous season this year and welcomed many new faces to the fleet. In October, five Hong Kong teams made the journey to Brisbane to compete in the 2018 Etchells Worlds on Moreton Bay. In celebration of the 50 th anniversary of the Etchells, over 94 boats made the starting line, making this year’s fleet one of the largest on record. The Hong Kong contingent was the third largest (behind Australia and the USA) and included Mark Thornburrow / Mike Huang, Marty Kaye / Marco Pocci, Charlie Manzoni/Kevin Crandall, James Badenach and Greg Farrell. A great regatta was had by all, but none more so than Mark Thornburrow and team, who finished 2nd place overall – just edged out of a win. Stay tuned for more – as they try again this June at the 2019 Worlds in Corpus Christi, Texas. This spring, we held our second annual Open Day to introduce new sailors to the fleet and share our love of ‘Etchelling’. 23 sailors, many of whom had previously taken sailing classes at the Club, joined the fleet for a day of fun sailing and racing. Some of our newbies, their interest piqued (and thirsts quenched at the obligatory dockside beers), joined the fleet for class racing through the remainder of the season. In November and again in February, the fleet migrated to Middle Island for a jaunt at racing off Lamma. As hoped, the Class Championships,

Henry Kaye and Whitehead series favoured us with brisk breeze and rolling waves for wet and wild conditions (and fabulous photo opps!). March saw the sinking of the beloved Fuzzy Duck, owned by Christoph Michalski, as a result of an unfortunate start line incident with an enthusiastic (and very much on port) J/80. But after a semi-submarine tow into Middle Island and some dogged reclamation work, I am happy to report that the mighty Fuzzy Duck has been miraculously resurrected and is once again competing on the racecourse. 16 Etchells (the most of any fleet) sailed in the Ladies Helm Race, on 4 May. This year’s event was won by our own Sharks sailor, Emily Keg, who we very much hope will continue her Etchells career. Third place was also claimed by Sharks sailor, Emily Polson. Three cheers for the Sharks! Thanks to many hours of boat work by Ian Fleming, Simon Watson and others, the Class has added a youth boat to the mix. HKG 555, newly christened 2nd Coming, is race ready and will be available for interested sailors to race at Class and Club events. With a 2nd place in the Nations’ Cup (edged on corrected time by just four seconds to fellow Etchells fleet member Mark Thornburrow racing the unratable Flying Phantom) under the auspices of the Irish (Jamie McWilliam, Mick McCool, Scotia Ryer, Niamh Huang) and the Club’s Top Dog (Frank Van Kempen and team), the concluded a cracking season. Looking forward to the next one!

RHKYC Outriggers take on The Pailolo and Kaiwi Channels in Hawaii

OUTRIGGER CONTACT outrigger@rhkyc.org.hk

Racing over 100km crossing two open ocean channels in a week Unfortunately during a skill development session at The Mokes in the surf, Erin broke her arm meaning she was unable to compete in the relay, however Nick and Inigo were up to the challenge and took on the channel as a two-person team. With similar conditions to the M2M, it was going to be a challenging crossing. The relay works with a support boat that picks up the paddler(s) who gets out of the Outrigger, and then goes ahead to drop the same paddler of again 15-20 minutes later, making the changes part of the challenge and fun. In the OC2 team with Jeremy and John spent the last 12km battling with another OC2 team from Hawaii to finish 22 seconds behind them in third place for OC2 men with a time of 5:10, and Nick and Inigo completed their crossing in a time of 6:10 to conclude a tough but extremely rewarding series of races. The crew then returned to Hong Kong for the local race circuit organised by the Victoria Recreation Club, tired, but far more knowledgeable and experienced than when they left.

ast year, RHKYC Outrigger members joined a couple of separate races in Hawaii. The Kaiwi channel OC1/OC2 relay, which is 65km from the island of Molokai to Oahu in April, and the Pailolo Challenge OC6 race, which is 42km from the island of Maui to Molokai in September. For 2019, a group of our paddlers decided to return for the Kaiwi Channel relay, and at the same time race the Pailolo Channel on an OC1 in the M2M (Maui to Molokai). A channel crossing in Hawaii from one island to another is a unique challenge. Usually with strong wind and large open ocean swells coming on a diagonal, the distances can seem significant and require skill and endurance. This demands adequate preparation and the lead up the race – with over 500km of on the water training and gym hours to build strength The first race was the M2M on 13 April. Three of the team raced this – John McLennan, Jeremy Young, and Erin Juhl who was supported by Nick Crabb and Inigo Sanchez Arrotegui on a support boat after they had attended a paddle surf camp. We also had four other Hong Kong Outrigger and Surf Ski Paddlers there for a great squad representing Hong Kong.

With very strong wind leading up to the race the channel was in full form and the big ocean swells that approach from the back right side of the boat eventually folding around the end of Molokai to become from directly behind and give us ‘Sleigh rides’ into the finish. The hours of training paid off, and it was great that all three crossed the finish line within minutes of each other after 42km – John 21 seconds ahead of Jeremy with a time of 3:14 and Erin with a time of 3:35 having started 20 minutes earlier. Then it was to Oahu and Lanikai beach to recover and also prepare for the Kaiwi Channel relay, with some Hawaii Kai downwind runs and skill development sessions at ‘The Mokes’. John and Jeremy were teaming up on an OC2 with two friends from Hawaii, and Erin, Nick, and Inigo were going to do a three-person team on an OC1. JUL/AUG 2019 AHOY! |

After all that time, in 1978, seven rowing members of the Club had the vision to establish a governing body for rowing, now the Hong Kong, China Rowing Association (HKCRA), to bring rowing to the Hong Kong community and enable Hong Kong Teams to compete internationally. Since then Hong Kong has played well above its size and weight in Asian and World Rowing and RHKYC has continued to play a strong role in the support and further development of rowing in Hong Kong. The Club is now set to further strengthen its international rowing credentials, providing the venue and support for the 2019 World Rowing

Rowing L to R: The Harbour Regatta brought the rowing race back to the iconic Victoria Harbour; ATIR has attracted a lot of top rowers in the world. Eduardo sitting at the stroke seat is the current World Champion

in Victoria Harbour, from Kellett Island to Pier 10 in Central and return. Awarded to the HKCRA by the World Rowing Federation (FISA), these World Championships will be the first time an ‘M’ Mark event has been held at the Club. It is a major undertaking and has needed a strong commitment to meet all the requirements of up to 700 rowers who are expected to compete, representing up to 25 countries and regions. The Honourable Mrs. Carrie LAM CHENG Yuet Ngor, GBM, GBS, Chief Executive of the HKSARG has accepted an invitation to be the Patron of the Championships, giving strong support to the event and to government’s policy of encouraging the use of the harbour as a venue for international water sports. Future Olympic Event? FISA is currently discussing with the International Olympic Committee the possibility to include Coastal Rowing events in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The Hong Kong event will be watched closely by the IOC and others as the potential of this new element of international rowing is carefully weighed up. FISA President, Jean-Christophe Rolland, an IOC member in his own right and an Olympic Gold Medallist from Sydney 2000, will attend the event and a range of international and Hong Kong sports and government officials will be welcomed to the Club. We look forward to members also taking the opportunity to welcome top international rowers into the Club and to enjoy this unique chance to watch a World Rowing Coastal Championships from Kellett Island! The World Championships will include seven events – solos (CM1x), double sculls (CM2x) and coxed quadruple sculls (CM4x+) for Men and Women and a Mixed double sculls event. Subject to final entry numbers in each event, about 35 races are expected in the three days of competition. With up to 18 crews in each race, it will make an exciting spectacle for spectators and extremely challenging navigation for crews. Coastal rowing boats are designed for open water and are the same as those used in the ATIR. But coastal rowing is very different in many respects from the more commonly understood 2,000m straight-line racing where each crew has its own lane and is expected to stay in it! Coastal rowing is much more like sailing with a series of buoys to navigate around, without interfering with other crews. This is not always easy when rowers are facing backwards in the boat! The Championships provide a unique opportunity for the Club’s two major sports, rowing and sailing, to find common ground. The course

similarities between sailing and coastal rowing is one of several reasons which makes the Club an ideal partner in this event. The Organising Committee will rely heavily on the Club’s very experienced volunteer buoy-laying team to lay the course at the beginning of each day. With some of the turning marks as close as 50m from the Central waterfront, the accuracy and stability of the buoys throughout the competition is paramount. The team has already clearly demonstrated their ability to meet these stringent requirements during the 2018 Asian Rowing Coastal Championships, which was held as a ‘test event’ on the same course in November last year and proved to be a great success. But the Club has other major claims to partner with the Association for the World Championships. It was a very deliberate choice of HKCRA to propose Victoria Harbour as the venue for the World Championships. The event will take advantage of the iconic image of Hong Kong and its harbour – a ‘Race in the City with its stunning urban backdrop will create an indelible memory for participants and their accompanying visitors. The Organising Committee hopes that this will provide an exciting foundation on which to promote the event itself and will provide an excellent opportunity to promote Hong Kong as an international water sports venue. The Club is the only venue from which these World Rowing Championships can realistically be run in the harbour if the event is to meet the highest standards expected by FISA and by its ‘M’ Mark designation, providing the necessary access to the water, facilities for competitors, support of volunteers experienced in water sports and more. For the local community, the World Championships will demonstrate the potential which the harbour presents for water sports, whether for active participation or for enjoying the spectacle from the waterfront. The annual Cross Harbour Swim and the International Dragon Boat Races already go some way to achieving this. The 2019 World Rowing Coastal Championships will provide strong reinforcement. With all the world’s top coastal rowers in Hong Kong for the championships, the Club is targeting many of the WRCC competitors to join the 2019 Around the Island Race (ATIR), which will be held one week later. This will be part of the Club’s strategy to develop the ATIR into ‘must-do’ event for coastal rowers world-wide and, with support of the HKCRA, to put Hong Kong and the Club on the map as a key player in international coastal rowing events. There will also be a number of public participation lead-up events and accompanying programes linked to the Championships in order to create a lasting legacy and not just a one-off success for the event itself.

Further information will be provided to Club members as the event nears. The boat storage and athlete preparation areas for the Championships will be based on the Club’s hard-standing; the Regatta Room and Roof will be operational and spectating areas; competitors will use the changing rooms and showers; the swimming pool area will serve as a base for volunteers; a number of meeting rooms will serve the media and race officials. In the meantime, other details can be found at the FISA website and Event Bulletin at http://www.worldrowing.com/events/2019-world-rowing-coastal-championships/event-information

“WHAT IS HAPPENING” in the Causeway Bay Typhoon Shelter? W O RD S: A L A N REID

Marine o the observer the answer is, “not a lot” it seems. There is a large body of open water, where our moorings used to be, that has been empty for months now. Why aren’t our moorings back there? Why is the new pontoon system not completely installed yet? Excellent questions, and the answer is; now that work has been completed on the Central Wanchai Bypass and the Shatin Central Link, the Marine Department are not happy with the depth of water in the Typhoon Shelter and they wish it to be dredged to a depth of -4.35m over the whole shelter. We are advised that MarDep have been insisting on this for over a year but is seems other Government Departments have been, how should we word this, slow in giving their agreement for the work to take place.

32

| JUL/AUG 2019 AHOY!

Perhaps they did not have a budget? However agreement has now been reached and the Typhoon Shelter will be trimmed and dredged. (At the time of writing this at the end of May, the intention is to start soon on the work, but we are not holding our breath).

Members will be aware that it is not possible to have a billiard table flatness to the bottom when reinstating the sea bed and so MarDep have a tolerance of + or – 30cm, or one foot in old money. Unfortunately some of the sea bed where our south pontoons are located is

Once the south pontoon is reinstated the old section of north pontoon will be removed so that trimming can take place at the bottom

of our slipway and the remaining part of our mooring area. Again once the trimming is complete a hydrographic survey of the area will be conducted and after MarDep approval the moorings can be re-laid in their original position. This will then free up space in the TS for the dredging that is required outside our mooring area. As the other areas of the TS, such as the western entrance and the mooring area alongside the breakwater are considered as dredging, soil sampling has to be undertaken before a permit can be issued by the EPD for the dredging and dumping to take place. This requires a small barge to drill into the sea bed to gather samples of the sea bed. These are analysed for content such as heavy metals and other contaminants. If the samples are not contaminated the dredged material can be dumped in a spoil ground. The process of sampling, testing and gaining approval for dredging and dumping can take a period of six months. Then the areas outside of our mooring area can be dredged so that the complete Typhoon Shelter has a depth of about -4.35 metres. So there is another delay in getting the typhoon shelter back to normal but with a depth of -4.35 metres, on average, over the whole of the TS deeper draft yachts will be safer in the TS.

Marine

Parts of the TS sea bed have already been dug up, tunnels installed and the sea bed reinstated. The depth in these areas is supposed to be an average of -4.35m. However the other areas of the TS, such as the Anchorage Area, the Western Entrance and the section of TS where we have our vessels moored parallel to the breakwater, are less than this depth. During the tunnelling work inside the TS there were many barges and tugs operating. Tugs by their nature have large diameter propellers and whilst operating inside the TS the tug propellers, being close to the sea bed, cause wash which disturbs the sand and silt on the sea bed and causes silting of the sea bed on the downstream side of the tugs working area. This is especially true of the depth at the bottom of our slipway.

out of this tolerance, with both high and low spots. These high spots can be “trimmed off and used to fill the low spots. This is not classified as dredging but as trimming and, as the grab is not lifted out of the water, because the sea bed is being moved about rather than taken away, trimming does not require a permit from the Environmental Protection Department for dumping the spoil. Unfortunately, to allow the area to be trimmed we will have to remove our south pontoon to allow barge access. Due to the uncertainty of the length of time the work will take we have requested that the southern T shaped pontoon is moved to the north pontoon, beside the steps, so as to not reduce the length of our pontoons. As this area has already been dug up and reinstated we are hopeful that the trimming can be done sooner rather than later. After the trimming is complete the sea bed must be hydrographically surveyed and the results sent to the Marine Department for approval. This process will take another month after dredging or trimming is complete and hopefully, if the sea bed levels are satisfactory to MarDep, then we will be able to reinstate the pontoons in their final position to the south of the travel hoist pier.

T340SO TAKACAT Sport 3.4m inflatable boat – Open Transom

It’s hard to look past the portability aspect of our high pressure fully removable air deck floor system. Extremely rigid when inflated to pressure (10psi) “standing on board is no issue” yet quick and easy to deflate and stow away for transport or storage. The extra thick high pressure air deck floor (dry & comfortable) is a secondary flat floor sitting on top of the PVC under floor which provides additional protection against abrasions and hazards when beaching etc. A big advantage over inflatable boats that have a built in air deck floor and or V floors.

Takacat’s large diameter tubes do not effect the boats performance like they can on a conventional mono-hull inflatable. In fact the large tubes enhance the performance of the low resistance catamaran hull designs to provide quick and level planning, exceptional stability and fuel economy. When you are out on the water, if boarding your Takacat from the mother-ship of enjoying a spot of fishing, you will really appreciate the stability of your Takacat.

Kellett Golf Society W O RD S: PAT RICK SHERRIF F IM AGES: CHRIS LI

Other Sports

ere is a brief update on activities over the last few months. We had our annual competition against the Football Club on 27 of March. This time the competition was held at KSC on the south course. KGS hosted the event. On this occasion, unlike last year, the weather was very good. Apologies to all involved for the cancellation of the earlier engagement which had to be cancelled at short notice due to thunderstorms.

Ridiculously, again, this was a full closely fought competition between the Football Club and the Kellett Golf Society. All of the games bar one, were decided on the 17th / 18th hole in favour of the Football Club. Congratulations to the Football Club! Our next competition was against the Ladies’ Recreation Club on the 11 April. The competition was again on the south course at KSC. A great turnout by our KGS members and great weather for the event. As in the competition against the Football Club, we, the KGS, were unable to prevail. Again, most of our matches were lost on the 17th / 18th hole. A closely fought competition. Well done to the LRC! On the 14 May our captain, Chris Li, organised a fantastic social event/ golf training at UPP. Drinks, snacks and golfing tuition followed by a mini competition turned out to be an absolutely fantastic evening courtesy of funds from the Kellett Golf Society. A really enjoyable event especially as we were able to welcome three new members. We look forward to seeing you all at competitions in the near future. Next competition is slated for 2 August against the Hong Kong Seniors at Fanling. Obviously it will be weather dependent. If you wish to take part, please email Circle Chair in the PR Department (circle.chair@ rhkyc.org.hk) as soon as you are able to commit to the event.

Screening of Chasing Coral Rooftop | Thursday 11 July | 1900hrs to 2100hrs

Wanted: Book Readers Tai Kok Tsui Kowloon Saturday | from 13 July to 14 September | 1000hrs to 1200hrs Riding on the successful English Book Reading Programme in 2018 with over 40 member volunteers, the Charity Foundation will continue this meaningful programme in 2019. The English Book Reading Programme is designed where the attributes of love, courage, positive thinking and kindness are incorporated in the selected English story books. There will also be role play; work sheets; arts and crafts; and games etc. to further enhance the deprived children’s confidence in English speaking and foster their passion of reading and learning. Consequently, your contribution to these children is more than just reading a book. Please see our website for more details and register online.

The RHKYC Sustainability Working Group is pleased to present a special screening of Chasing Coral, the first of a series of events that aim to address sustainability issues and increase awareness of our collective impact on the planet. This powerful documentary follows a team of divers, photographers and scientists as they set out to document the disappearance of the world’s coral reefs. ABOUT CHASING CORAL Coral reefs around the world are vanishing at an unprecedented rate. Chasing Coral follows a team of divers, photographers and scientists, as they attempt to discover why. Using specialized time-lapse cameras, the team captures the elusive process of coral bleaching and the impacts of climate change on these valuable ecosystems. The film, which has won numerous awards, uses more than 500 hours of underwater footage filmed over three years and submissions from volunteers in over 30 countries to document the catastrophe silently raging under our oceans. This event is free to all members and their guests but please book online and refer to website for more details. JUL/AUG 2019 AHOY! |

La Rioja Alta Wine Dinner Compass Room | Thursday 4 July ‘La Rioja Alta is one of the most respected Rioja producers and one of my favourites.’ – Jancis Robinson, wine critic 10 July 1890, five families joined together to share their passion for wine and founded ‘Sociedad Vinícola de La Rioja Alta’ in the Haro Station district of Rioja Alta. La Rioja Alta represents the essence of vine-growing culture; its vines are tenderly cared for on a 473-hectare estate, 360 of which are vineyards planted on limestone soil in the best parts of Rioja Alta. Tempranillo dominates their vineyards, but in the past few years they have planted Graciano, Garnacha and Mazuelo which Graciano adds a special personality to their wines, and Garnacha makes Viña Ardanza always attractive and elegant.
