Commodore’s Message Bonjour, Good’ay, Hello all! Glad to be representing the Club and all you members over the forthcoming couple of years.
The Bridge
A few words of thanks to our outgoing Commodore, John Woo, who has worked tirelessly in what were difficult conditions to say the least.
Commodore Denis Martinet
會長孟憲庭
The Club is in great shape and has a very busy summer holiday ahead. As it’s more of a staycation for most of us, what better place than the Club to spend some great time?
Book early, get up even earlier as already sail training is fully signed up until early September. But as social distancing restrictions get further eased, this allows you to find space on Big Boats or take part in the most popular summer series ever; the St. James’s Place Sunset Series which has been attracting in excess of 60 boats out on the start line – figures we haven’t seen since the 1980s! Rowing and Paddling will be equally busy in July and August. The Rowing and Paddle Sports Club Championships will take place at Middle Island on 4 July, the first Club Championships for the section since 2012, during which perpetual trophies (some dating back to 1940s) will be awarded. And more fun during the week! The inaugural Rowing and Paddle Sports Sunset Series will take place on four

Wednesday evenings, with the first race slated to take place on 15 July. Please do come down and enjoy the party! As you are all aware our RHKYC Team Agiplast has been extremely busy of late. With the arrival of Head Coach Chris Rashley, all team members have now started a high powered physical regimen combined with intensive on the water training, honing their foiling and tactical skills. If that was not enough, we have been officially recognised by Clean Seas, for our ongoing efforts to reduce plastic consumption. And to demonstrate that commitment our young guns of RHKYC Team Agiplast have taken onto themselves the collection of waste plastic whenever they go out. More importantly, they encourage you to do the same whenever you are sailing, rowing or paddling! Please welcome our new sponsor HSBC Expat, who is finally able to begin their partnership with us this September as title sponsors of the HSBC Expat Autumn Regatta. Having originally signed in December 2019, the cancellation of Hong Kong Race Week and social distancing restrictions meant a long wait before proudly becoming a sponsor: The HSBC Expat Autumn Regatta will see RHKYC members experience the activation and engagement from a brand that has a long history supporting sports in Hong Kong. July and August will also see the delayed launch of the new recycled shopping bag sponsor at RHKYC. Simpson Marine will be the new face of the upgraded and very usable shopping bags that the club will use for F&B takeaways, ship shop purchases amongst other things. More specifically you will be able to put them to good use with some great buys that the Club has been working on, buys of the liquid kind, perfect for gifts or for immediate consumption with fellow members in the bar! Sante! Cheers!

General Manager’s Message
The Bridge
Finally the news we have all been waiting for. With the number of new cases of Covid-19 now sufficiently under control, the government has been able to ease the social distancing measures and, whilst they haven’t been removed completely, members have more freedom to enjoy all the Club’s sports and facilities. It is a perfect opportunity to raise a toast to the part we have all played in helping our great city bring the pandemic under control, General Manager Mark Bovaird with the Club’s newly launched 總經理布馬克 and exclusive Champagne, Cuvée du Commodore, or perhaps one of our very own new Club Red and Club White wines! We’ve also just launched the new Steakhouse in the Gun Room. Only open for dinner, the Steakhouse offers premium steak selections with classic offerings including table cooking and gueridon service. The Steakhouse promises to deliver a fantastic experience customized just as you like it. In June we had a Seafood Fiesta at Middle Island where the food was literally served on the table! So popular was the event that it bears repeating and this time we’re hosting it on the Rooftop at Kellett Island with the stunning Hong Kong city skyline as a backdrop. We stopped press on this issue so F&B could include full details of this extra event on Friday 31 July so please check it out on page 41 and book early to avoid missing out.
contact F&B to see if they can still squeeze you in. If you can’t get into that one, we have the M. Chapoutier Wine Dinner on 30 July (which we sadly had to postpone from March due to Covid-19) and the Roda Wine Dinner on 13 August. These three wine dinners each represent all that is best from their respective regions of New Zealand, France and Spain and it’s well worth attending all three if you can! From July 6 through till the end of August we have a ‘Wish You Were Here’ summer holiday promotion in the Bistro featuring a specials menu drawn from some to the most popular countries members would normally be travelling to on their summer holidays. Since we can’t travel this summer, we’ll bring your favourite holiday destinations to the Bistro instead. We weren’t able to hold our Annual Staff Party in May due to Covid-19 restrictions, but before John Woo’s term as Commodore ended, he very kindly handed out long service awards to our staff who have achieved 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 years of service with the Club. He also handed out the Commodore’s Award to Eric Chau who is just as highly regarded amongst members frequenting Shelter Cove now as he was previously when working in the Main Bar at Kellett Island. Please have a look at the photos on page 46. Now whilst 35 years may seem a long and dedicated service to one Club, one of our longest serving staff members is Lai Hei, Marine Supervisor at Shelter Cove who has been working at the Club for 42 years. I would like to congratulate Lai Hei on becoming a grandfather! Lai Hei’s son is Lai Cheuk Pong who himself has worked at the Club for the past five years as a Coxwain at Shelter Cove. I wonder if the newest addition to the Lai family will follow his father and grandfather’s footsteps and become the third generation of the family to work in the Club in the future?! Without a doubt he would be most welcome to do so if he chooses to.

Feature | Spring Regatta 2020 Traditionally held to mark the end of Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club’s annual sailing season, this year’s Spring Regatta was held, albeit a little later than planned, to formally mark the return to racing after a two month suspension due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Victoroia harbour was once again awash with colorful spinnakers.
C
ommodore John Woo said, “It is unfortunate that a good portion of our sailing activities this season have been disrupted including our Hong Kong Race Week and Rolex China Sea Race due to the outbreak of Covid-19 worldwide. After approximately two months’ suspension of our sport, members are very enthusiastic and excited to be out sailing again to compete in this year’s Spring Regatta.” The first day of racing started in rainy conditions with an easterly breeze of 7 to 8 kts. 100 boats from 10 classes turned out and the start line was set off of Hung Hom. Race Officer Barry Truhol sent the classes on a combination of 2.5 to 3.5 lap courses with distances of approximately 6.26nm to 10.15nm. “The forecasted Force 4 did not came through, and with only 7 to 8 kts of wind across the course, we planned to run a two hour race for each class and provide competitors with the longest available course for this wind speed.” said Barry.

Due to the social distancing regulations, boats were required not to race with a crew (including the skipper) which exceeded the number permitted under CAP599G ruling of eight persons and boats racing with more than eight people would be disqualified without a hearing. Impalas, Ruffians, Pandoras and J/80s were put onto the moorings opposite the pontoon to further avoid gatherings of sailors. The Big boat division were affected the most by the new regulations with some division entries cancelling as it was difficult to compete shorthanded and competitors described it as a tough job. Big Boat Ambush usually sails with 12 to 14 sailors on board, co-Skipper Andrew Taylor said: “It’s quite busy, especially on the kite drops!” However Ambush maintained a high performance in the Spring Regatta. “Our crew work has been exceptionally good, perhaps because everybody is more focused than normal” co-skipper Joachim Isler said after racing. Day 2 turned into a fantastic day with sunshine and an easterly breeze of 6kts greeting the sailors. Race Officer Barry Truhol got racing underway at 1100hrs off Hung Hom with the Big Boat division 1 being sent off on a 6.26nm easterly course, hoisting their kites after rounding the top mark off Tai Koo Shing and sending it back to Hung Hom for two JUL/AUG 2020 AHOY! |

The Flying Fifteens and Dragons were sent on 1.5 loops around Tai Koo Shing with the last group of Ruffians and Pandora on the shortest course with just one loop around Shau Kei Wan. As the race progressed the breeze continued to build up to 10 to 12kts with most sailors easily finishing Race 2. Longer courses were set for all divisions for the final race of the Spring Regatta, with 120 minutes target times, all boats enjoyed close and competitive racing. on Day 2, Lighthorse Alpha+ maintained their lead in Big Boat Division 1. Whiskey Jack took two bullets and remained in first place on count back in Big Boat Division 2. XT’s two bullets guaranteed her first place in Big Boat Division 3. Dragon Zephyr, Flying Fifteen Tomffoolery and Pandora Windfall also all kept their leads in their respective divisions. In the biggest participating class – Etchells, Racer X took overall first place with a consistent performance over all three races. Impala Rainbow Chaser climbed from third place to first overall only one point ahead of Taxi. J/80 Tigrina beat Footloose on count back to win in their division, with Ruffian Larrikin taking two firsts on Day 2 and climbing from 6th to 1st place.

An unusual event for our sponsors and partners with no formal prizegiving taking place on the last day, however as always our events would not be able to grow and develop without their ongoing support. For that we would like to recognise and thank our supporting Sponsors Kuehne & Nagel, (http://www.kuehne-nagel. com/) who are ready and able to handle any shipping or transport needs you might have and also BuyAssociation (www.buyassociation.co.uk) – specialists in UK investment properties. eams sported costumes of all types to mark the occasion! Among others, the Scots aboard Impala 1 donned their kilts and carried bagpipes; England was represented by NHS doctors in their scrubs on the Flying Fifteens and rockstars on Dreadnought; and the Hong Kong Phoenix team styled their Magic 25 as a dragon boat. Boats were split into five starts based on their RHKATI ratings, with the HKPN division starting first from a line set up in front of the Kellett
Island clubhouse. The last group comprising a Flying Tiger and a X-55 representing Hong Kong, a Mills 41 of New Zealand and a Mills 41 of German descent, departed an hour later. Under blue skies and a south-westerly breeze varying from 4 to 11kts, Race Officer Inge Strompf-Jepsen elected to send the HKPN division to Tai Koo Shing with two loops between Tai Koo Shing and Kowloon Bay before heading back to Causeway Bay for the finish.

The first HKPN boat Tornado finished the race in 80 minutes, not long after the last RHKATI group started, and was soon followed by Early Bird. “Originally the HKPN division was going to sail the same course as the RHKATI division but we worried about the wind at the Lei Yue Mun gap so their course was a bit shorter” Inge said after the race.
Feature | Nations’ Cup 2020
After navigating a tricky downwind start, the RHKATI divisions were sent out to Junk Bay to round TCS4 and then back to Tin Hau, downwind to Kowloon Bay before heading back to the Club finish line. A summer southerly wind funneled by Hong Kong Island caused variable wind directions throughout the course, with most sailors managing to hold their kites until North Point then limping their way around a large hole and finally sailing upwind into Junk Bay. The wind dropped off significantly during the last of the RHKATI starts for the Big Boats making it difficult for them to chase down the class boats which had cleared through the Lei Yue Mun gap and were reaching across flat water with a 10 to 12kts southerly breeze.
Curiously, the nine front runners including five Etchells and three Impalas rounded Dock Buoy instead of Kowloon Bay as required. On their tail, the Swedish RT – Miss initially dropped its spinnaker near Dock Buoy, but skipper Peter Backe called for the kite to be rehoisted and lead the remaining fleet towards Kowloon Bay to sail the proper course. With the nine boats retiring after their ‘finish’, Sweden’s RT – Miss secured the Vic Locke Memorial Trophy and, more importantly, snagged bragging rights of having the Swedish flag displayed over the Main Bar. Peter Backe said “Nations’ Cup is one of the best races we have at the Club and Sweden has been trying to win it every year since the initial race in 2011. This year everything finally came together. The boat was ideal for reaching and the crew did a fantastic job getting us around the track without any problems. We will certainly enjoy flying the Swedish flag behind the bar for the next year and will do our best to defend it again during next year’s event.”

This year, Nations’ Cup was also designated a Clean Regatta and Liza Ovinova of Russia stood guard at the recycling bins to ensure that sailors correctly recycled their bottles and cans after the race. Clean Regatta is a certification programme administered by Sailors for the Sea, a nonprofit organisation that educates and empowers boaters to protect and restore our oceans and coastal waters. By supporting proper recycling of paper, glass, metal and plastic, participants contributed towards the Club’s goal of achieving Clean Regatta certification for all sailing and rowing events going forward. The Club anticipates that Nations’ Cup 2020 will be certified ‘Silver’ by Sailors for the Sea and more details regarding the certification requirements and how members can contribute towards ‘Platinum’ certification will be provided in due course. Last but not least, a big thank you to our ‘United Nations’ race management team: Race Officer Inge Strompf-Jepsen and her supporting team comprising Bonnie Cheng, David Norton, Elberti Uiterwaal-Postma, Lucy Sutro, Sheila Chan as well as the safety team comprising Christopher Nowell, Ian Fleming and Niclas Rydin.

A
s you may recall from our Ahoy! article announcing the news of our Youth America’s Cup campaign (Ahoy! May 2020), the Youth America’s Cup Steering Committee has adopted a ‘four pillars approach’ to the campaign; one of which is to reduce plastics entering the ocean by raising awareness of how impacted our oceans are, launching concrete initiatives to reduce plastics entering the ocean and being proud of our efforts to prevent plastic pollution. This month we bring you some great news. For the duration of the Youth America’s Cup campaign, the Club has entered into a partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme, Clean Seas, which was launched in February 2017 with the aim of engaging governments, the general public and the private sector in the fight against marine plastic pollution. This campaign aims to address the root-cause of marine litter by targeting the production and consumption of single-use plastic. The Club attaches great importance to the issue of combating marine plastic pollution and in 2016 took bold and decisive action when we became one of the first yacht clubs to ban single use plastic bottles, bags and straws from the Club. Our focus is very much on our future; be it nurturing its youth and the sailors of tomorrow or doing our part for the environment with its sustainability initiatives. It is this forward thinking that attracted Agiplast to join hands with the Club as Title Sponsor for the Club’s Youth America’s Cup endeavour. Agiplast regenerates plastics for a more sustainable world and has been doing so for over 25 years. Agiplast’s main focus is to supply processing companies globally with sustainable plastic raw materials; essentially eliminating the need for virgin plastic materials. The Club has made a commitment to the ‘Partner Values of Clean Seas’ through pledging to execute specific planned activities that demonstrate that the Club and RHKYC Team Agiplast will promote Clean Seas and its values, create education plans to highlight the problems of plastic pollution and inspire through example.

| JUL/AUG 2020 AHOY!
The Clean Seas Partner pledge consists of three main areas: 1. To educate and inspire: the Club has committed to incorporate plastic education into all of its Sail Training and schools training courses, to include a beach clean-up into all of its adult sail training courses and to run all sporting events on any of its premises from 2021 onwards under the Clean Regattas certification process run by Sailors for the Seas. 2. To promote the Clean Seas campaign and its values: the Club has committed to help raise awareness about the campaign by promoting the Clean Seas logo on any merchandise, social media postings and on the RHKYC Team Agiplast sails during the Youth America’s Cup 3. Inspire through example: the Club has committed to a number of actions including discussing with all of its suppliers options for reducing single use plastic, beach clean ups, reviewing the recycling facilities at all sites, publish data showing how much waste it is recycling and organise training for staff and seminars for members highlighting the issue with plastic pollution and providing suggestions for reducing that usage. This pledge will co-exist with the Club’s overall Sustainability Policy which was adopted by the General Committee in March 2020. The work of upholding the Clean Seas pledge has started with the Club incorporating the Clean Seas logo into the Club’s website and social media accounts, and with a beach cleanup at Middle Island on 18 July. Other initiatives and events will be announced over the course of the next few months. In the meantime, we invite members to join us in getting the word out and turning the tide on plastic: • Tell your friends and family about the marine plastics problem. The Club has 6,000 active members. If each member told three people about the problem and encouraged them to think about their plastic footprint and what this would mean for future generations, we would reach 18,000 people! • Reduce your number of food delivery or takeaway meals. The planet pays a price for our convenience culture. In Hong Kong landfills, dinnerware alone makes up 9.6% of all disposed plastics; of the 13% that gets collected, they are often too difficult to recycle due to food contamination. • Reuse the Club’s bags; the small bag makes a great bag for a lunch box and the large bags can be used as shopping bags. • Recycle the plastics you consume (and consider checking that the items you purchase are in fact recyclable in Hong Kong in the first place!)

Middle Island Social Rowing Group W O RD S: PAUL KID M A N | IM AGES: MI CHEL L E Y UEN A ND MI CH A EL N G
Rowing or many years, the Club has had a very active rowing section organising both fine and coastal rowing activities. We continue to be one of the leading rowing clubs in Asia hosting multiple local and international rowing events. But unknown to many keen RHKYC rowers there is an illustrious Social Rowing Group of Middle Island coastal rowers who head out ‘yearround’ for rowing adventures across Hong Kong’s coastal waters. The group first began in 1972 and assembles every Saturday at 1400hrs at the Middle Island Boathouse. A diverse group, made up equally of male and female rowers from every age group and livelihood. This includes lawyers, accountants, teachers, students, doctors, public servants, bankers, businesspeople and a bus driver.

These rowing adventures include local coastal rows around the waters close to Middle Island, normally to locations such as Stanley, Mo Tat Wan, Po Toi, Castle Rock and Aberdeen. Occasionally these rows start earlier in the day and are extended to include a longer excursion with lunch. The rowing conditions can vary from placid lake-like water to rolling waves where the boats can be momentarily hidden by waves. Although safe it can be very thrilling and eventful! Our group’s favorite is Mo Tat Wan, nicknamed ‘The Special Lemonade Row’. This requires the rowers to safely navigate the Lamma Chanel. To arrive at our destination, we regularly compete with the largest container ships in the world. It is not unusual to get so close to these massive ships that you feel you can touch their moving hulls. On arrival at Mo Tat Wan,

In addition, every year we organize an extended row, the Cheung Chau Row. This event is open to all Hong Kong rowing clubs. It is held over two days that includes an evening barbecue and a stay at a local hotel. It is always fun for those rowers with families for them to join the barbecue and the hotel stay. The distance covered over this weekend approaches 50 kilometers in total. But do not worry you need not be a ‘superhuman’ rower to take part. The course is divided into 10 kilometers sections and each rower can request to do as much or as little as they wish. Also, we always need coxswains to help steering the quadruple scull boats. No matter if you would like to row, cox or just sunbathe (on the safety boat), this event will cater for all. The members of this group are generally social rowers and the outings are usually carried out at a leisurely or ‘steady pace’ at most. That said, some participants do enter various coastal rowing races across Hong Kong including events organized by other rowing and paddling clubs.
Example races include Around the Island Race (or Around the Island Tour as far as some of our number are concerned!), Head of The Bay, Beaufort Island, Around Lamma, Discovery Bay, VRC etc. If you review our winning record you would conclude our motto: “The most important thing is not winning but taking part”. We always welcome new participants to the Saturday afternoon coastal rowing group. The only qualification required is that you either have a rowing pedigree or finished the Adult Supervised Rowing Course at Middle Island. To join these events, use TeamSnap and see you Saturday 1400hrs at Middle Island boat house! To join these events, please contact the Rowing Manager.

raditionally, unfavourable weather is expected at the Head of the Bay regatta, which usually takes place in April. However, given that the event was postponed for almost two months, the hope was that this year the weather would have been a delight to race in. On the 6 June 2020, thunderstorms threatened throughout the day, and tradition was maintained. At 0700hrs on race day, Head Rowing Coach Ben Rowe and I had a decision to make in regards to running the morning races. With local conditions at MI and the Hong Kong Observatory radar imagery the only information we had to make the decision, the only choice we could make was to cancel the morning’s racing, which was extremely unfortunate for the Club’s 24 junior rowers who were scheduled to row. Additionally, a decision had been made by the Club’s Outrigger Canoe leadership team to cancel their participation in the morning event. On a positive note, the Club’s dragon boat team Royal X had the luxury of making the decision to race slightly later at 0900hrs. With the worst case scenario of having a race to the Club House for breakfast, Gianni Aprea made the
call to go ahead. Thankfully, the weather did hold off and Royal X managed to hold a total of 8 races comprising of a 2,500m, 1,000m, 500m and 200m. Racing was extremely tight given that the boats were evenly matched. All athletes found the back to back racing tough, especially given the distance. However this challenge was a fond memory when sitting in groups of eight, the team enjoyed a lovely cold Peroni with their lunch.
users in the Deep Water Bay Area. Although it is fantastic to see more people on the water, the surge in the use of jet skis is a constant annoyance to all sailors, rowers and paddlers at Middle Island and their presence on race day did not help the competitors. However, after a few capsizes and the opportunity to surf various motor boat and jet ski wakes, all crews successfully completed their respective races.
Moving to the afternoon, given that the weather had gradually moved south of Hong Kong throughout the morning, the decision was made to run the six afternoon races that included all rowing open and masters categories in addition to university novice crews racing in singles (1x), coastal doubles (C2x) and coastal quads (C4x+). The traditional format of head racing was applied where crews are started individually and race against the clock. The regatta had two courses, the short course (2,500m) was rowed by all those competing in 1x, whereas the long course (4,180m) was rowed by all C2x and C4x+ crews.
Given the precautionary measures in regards to Covid-19, there was no prize giving on race day although competitors again were pleased to enjoy a refreshing bottle of Peroni after their race leading to a healthy gathering in the bar that evening (in the required groups of eight).
Racing was found to be again, extremely challenging by the rowers, especially given the tide swing of two meters and other water
On behalf of the race organising committee I would like to thank all competitors who were patient and maintained social distancing throughout the day, Patrick Bin and his team in the Club House for their support, my colleagues in the Rowing and Paddle Sport Department and of course the volunteers, who without their help the event would have not been possible. A special mention of thanks to Gary Meacham, Race Director of the 64th Head of the Bay.

Outrigger Canoeing – Virtual Racing W O RD S: JEREM Y YO UN G

Duff and Phelps VRC races 4 and 5 Throughout the year, the Victoria Recreation Club organise a race series comprising of 10 races in short and long course formats, including a mini ‘downwind’ series. The race series is open to outriggers, surf-skis, coastal rowers and SUPs making it a pretty large group. For 2020, after races 1, 2, and 3 (the first of the downwind) were complete, restrictions and precautionary measures regarding Covid19 resulted in the postponement of races 4 and 5 and a rethink was required as to how these races could be run. Taking inspiration from the various ‘virtual’ series around the globe that have been taking place, the race organiwsers developed a new format for races 4 and 5. These were named as ‘virtual races’. The criteria was a sprint course of 3km or a long course of 8km in a triangle; starting and finishing at the same point (making for some interesting interpretations of a triangle) and with groups of no more than 8 people. The conditions for each group could be different to others depending on location, time of day, wind, tide, and heat! This format attracted a bunch of people from Hong Kong and across the globe with entries from UK, Australia, Hawaii, Canada and Switzerland. Race 4: 16 May 2020 Conditions: No wind, No Swell, Sunny and Hot! There were over 100 participants and RHKYC had 51 representatives through six categories; OC1, OC2, V1, OC6, Coastal Rower 2, and Surf Ski! The main challenge for Race 4 was managing not to overheat through the race, with several competitors finding the final part of the long course challenging. However this didn’t impact Brian Bigos who despite the flat conditions managed to break his paddle during his start piece! Results for RHKYC (podium name and all places) Long Course Ladies OC1 SurfSki Men OC1 OC2 V1 OC6 Standard Coastal Rowing C2x Short Course Surfski International OC1

Race 5: 23 May 2020 Conditions: Medium wind, medium swell, overcast, cooler temperatures. Race 5 presented a different set of conditions to Race 4 meaning courses needed to be planned differently. The challenge became maximising the downwind, power in the upwind, and managing the crosswinwd legs of the course. A huge turnout with 73 (54 long, 8 short) from the Club, with representation across OC1, OC2, V1, OC6 Standard, OC6 Unlimited, Surfski, C1x, C2x, C4x+. Results for RHKYC (podium name and all places) Long Course Ladies OC1 3rd (Erin Juhl), 4th, 9th SurfSki 6th Men OC1 4th, 6th 9th, 16th V1 1st (Jeremy Young) Surfski 8th OC6 Standard 2nd (Mixed Rae Strachan 2), 3rd (Mixed Rae Strachan), 4th, 7th OC Unlimited 2nd (Mixed Doug Woodring), 3rd (Mixed Andrew Simmonds), 4th, 5th Coastal Rowing C1x 1st (Fang Zhao) C2x 1st (Fang Zhao/ Simon Blyth), 2nd (Michelle Yuen / Lam Chan) C4x+ 1st (Niral Maru, Mark Savelli, Cally Williams, Sheila Saw and Michael Ng) Short Course Men OC2 1st (Adam Fan/Willis Lee) International OC1 1st (Alexander de Miranda) C2x 1st (Sheryl Slater/ Andrew Russell)
Other Virtual Races Throughout April there were a multiple of Virtual race series across the globe. Whilst many RHKYC members joined these, RHKYC OC member Jeremy Young qualified for the final 8 showdown on the Tupuria King #Raceyoself series (the final decided by social media post likes!). The qualification included 4 challenges: 10km challenge, maximum distance in two hours, sprints, and a 50km endurance paddle.

But it’s not all sweat and pain that attracts this bunch of dragon boat paddlers back to the Club. The smell of a BBQ and the taste of Peroni beers remind us all to take it easy, relax and unwind after all that hard work on the water. Similarly, the idea of a feast on Po Toi Island after departing from the shores of Stanley is another perfect way to end a day of OC1 paddling with friends. There will be more adventures over the next month or so with plans to paddle a few OC6s up to Shelter Cove and back the next day. No doubt we will see a dragon boat passing through Victoria Harbour and well, it’s a big ocean out there. Anything is possible, and it will be done.
As restrictions began to ease for both dragon boat and outrigger canoe paddlers, many found creative ways to safely return to the water and to the sport they love. For some, having their own personal craft such as an OC1 meant that they could continue to paddle in small groups. However, those without access to a small boat meant changing their usual ‘on the water’ routine to diversifying their ‘on land’ workout regime. There have been numerous workout challenges globally online as well as friendly virtual team based competitions involving burpees, pushups and pull-ups to name just a few. Running up Violet Hill, clocking distances remotely, virtually, separately, but all together in the spirit of competition has seen so many of the Club’s paddlers keeping active, fit and healthy over the past few months.
Youth Paddle Camps and Stand Up Paddling (SUP) Throughout the summer we will be running youth paddle camps (ages 12 and up) and SUP Basics introduction course to stand up paddling for both adults and children (ages 10 years and up). Please email rowing. manager@rhkyc.org.hk for all enquiries or visit the Club website for more details.

Typhoon Season is almost here… Marine
It’s the time of year to think about typhoons again. The first typhoon of the season has already formed in the pacific, caused havoc in the Philippines and then fortunately, petered out on coming into contact with the cooler sea water, before it came much further than 20 degrees North. Thankfully Hong Kong did not have a bad one last year but with the Pacific temperatures fairly high already this year we might be in for another big one.
or mooring holders it’s time to think about checking your mooring ropes, shackles and swivels if you have one. I would like to remind members that stainless steel shackles gave way on three different moorings in Typhoon Mangkhut. If you have a stainless steel swivel on your mooring you should give serious thought to replacing it. Stainless Steel swivels are prone to cracks and failure in the swivel section as can be seen from the photographs.
Roller furler sails are another source of problems in a typhoon. I remind members again that sails left on the furler and on the boom are not covered by the crafts insurance policy. If a roller Genoa breaks loose and flogs about in the wind it may take the rig down. Again insurance may not cover a mast damaged from a flogging sail. If you must leave a sail on the roller furler, as the wind is too strong to remove it, do not leave the sail secured only by the sheets and the roller line. Take the sheets off and wrap a line around the sail from the eye on the clue. Secure the actual roller furling unit with a rope to the boat to stop it unfurling. Make sure that mooring ropes have proper chaffing protection as they go over the fairleads. Fit extra ropes to the mooring chain, not to the swivel, and lead them back to the mast, winches or other strong point on board. It is best to prepare your craft before you leave her, after a day’s sailing, rather than have to go back to the boat at short notice to prepare the

boat for strong winds. Leave nothing loose on deck that may get blown away. Remove all dodgers and awnings as they are not covered by insurance either. Check out the Marine section on the Clubs website for more information. https://www.rhkyc.org.hk/TyphoonAdvice.aspx Class boats will be secured by the Club against moving in a typhoon. The Club has installed additional hold down points so that all class boats will be tied down separately at Kellett Island and Middle Island. Members should remove their sails and any loose gear from class boats when a typhoon is on its way. A new typhoon preparation plan has been drawn up for Middle Island. With the swell waves on top of the storm surge from typhoon Mangkhut washing their way over the top of the hard standing at Middle Island, we plan to use the new forklift to clear the hard standing by lifting sailing dinghies up on to the first and second floor of the Club house building
At Middle Island Dragon boats and OC6’s will be removed from the hard standing and placed in a safe area on top of the boat house and beside the Hong Kong Electric Sub Station. J 80’s will be turned to face East and secured to the hardstanding. Sailing Dinghies will be cleared off the bottom row of the racks and large concrete blocks will be placed on the slipway to break up the swell waves coming up the slipway. Large stone armour has been laid to give protection to the slipway after the damage caused by Mangkhut was repaired. The floating pontoons are not secured to the sea bed with Seaflex cables and the individual pontoons are wired together to help to prevent loss if the joining bones break. The pontoon next to the sea wall has quick disconnect fittings so that it can be taken away from the sea wall and the support beams. The gangway will be lifted ashore by the forklift and safely secured on top of a few concrete blocks to protect it from the swell waves.

at Middle Island. A trial run was conducted in May as shown in the photograph. The clubs RIB’s will be placed in a rack with almost two metres clearance to keep them clear of swell and storm surge. The forklift will itself be driven up onto a plinth to keep it clear of any storm surge.
Let’s all hope that if we do have a Super Typhoon this year it does not arrive during the 12 days of spring tides during the months of August, September and October. Have a happy typhoon party by having your craft well prepared for the storm.

Round Island Beach Cleanup Middle Island | Saturday 18 July | 0900hrs to 1300hrs After the recent months of being (mostly) confined at home, wouldn’t it be great to be outside again, get some fresh air and do something for the marine environment as well? Debris in the water, and on our beaches, is becoming more and more of an issue. And people, our members especially, are more and more aware of the necessity to be involved in Marine Conservation, of which beach cleanups are a great way to have an impact. Join our next beach cleanup on Sat 18 July which is a great half-day out. We will meet at Middle Island in the morning and motor out to Round Island, where we will spend about 1.5 hours collecting trash. There will be a RIB in the water, and dragonboat teams will join the effort as well. Bring your kids, bring your dogs, bring friends – make it a great morning and help the environment at the same time! And if you and your family are interested in Marine Conservation we will soon be launching a series of events, including educational speakers, more cleanups and other events. Stay tuned!

M. Chapoutier Wine Dinner Compass Room | Thursday 30 July
“History will record that Michel Chapoutier is a revolutionary.” – Robert Parker
Chapoutier is clearly a great believer in terroir. The Chapoutier Sélections Parcellaires are some of the most celebrated and rare wines in the world. In 2019, the estate was ranked the fifth in the ‘World’s Most Admired Wine Brands’ out of more than a 100,000 wineries, published by the British magazine ‘Drinks International’. Since its first edition in 2011, Chapoutier has been ranked the number one French brand, five times in nine years. True to his pioneering spirit, in 1997, Michel Chapoutier set off to explore the terroirs of Australia and settled in the state of Victoria. Fascinated by the geological diversity of the region, in 2009, he purchased two Australian vineyards: Shays Flat Estate and Landsborough Valley Estate in the Victorian Pyrenees. He recognized that the cool weather patterns and remarkable diversity of soil in this region would allow him to make distinctive wines from the Syrah/Shiraz grape of his homeland, utilizing his biodynamic winegrowing philosophy.
