Commodore’s Message Thanks to all our voluntary committee members who have put in so much effort, together with our management team, in making our Club winner of three awards this year – again! We are the repeat winner of the Yacht Club of the Year Award; the Best Asian Yacht Club of the Year; and the Best Asian Regatta of the Year (China Coast Regatta). I would also like to thank all the members who provided us with very positive comments and feedback on our Kellett Island Long Term Improvement Plan. To repeat what I said in my message last month, this project is for the future of our Club and for our next generation of sailors and rowers. The General Committee is working on various financing options including naming rights of rooms, facilities, and even buildings. We are looking for members who are willing to make contributions to the project, and to the future of the Club. If you are willing and able to help, please let me or any member of the General Ambrose Lo, Commodore Committee know. Since 2010, we have been advocating the upgrading of the former Public Cargo Working Area (PCWA) and Causeway Bay Typhoon Shelter (CBTS) for the provision of high quality marine recreation support facilities that are commensurate with and appropriate to Hong Kong’s theme as Asia’s World City, while also stressing the need for more marina and marine facilities in Hong Kong as a whole. Thanks to Vice Commodore Isler and members of our Strategic Planning Committee, we have been making positive progress. The latest step was the May visit to Kellett Island by the Water-land Interface Task Force, a sub-committee under the Harbourfront Commission, together with officials from various government departments, to further understand our vision and suggestions. Back on the sailing scene, the Spring Regatta was held over the weekend of 5 to 6 May. Following thunderstorms and torrential rain the night before, there was a good breeze for most of the weekend and all three races were held. A total of 94 boats took part and my congratulations go to the overall winner Ambush and winners of the respective classes. Adding to the fun over the weekend was the opportunity to test drive a Rolls-Royce Ghost, which several people took up. It’s probably a good job that some of the driving skills seen out on the water were not replicated during the test drive experience! My next congratulations go to Peter Backe who won the BNP Paribas International Match Racing Championships, held from 11 to 13 May. It was great to see so many nations represented, and I am sure the Club will host more events of this type in the future. Although the Spring Regatta is officially the end of the sailing season, please remember that the Sunset Series starts on Friday 1 June and runs for 12 weeks (except 6 July). Good luck to the Sharks who have been selected to sail as part of the HKODA team attending the Optimist Asian Championships which will be held in Sri Lanka from 2 to 10 June, and to the Club’s J/80 sailors attending the J/80 Worlds in Dartmouth from 9 to 16 June. Continuing the Club’s representation at overseas events, the Top of the Gulf Regatta was held from 4 to 8 May and there were a number of RHKYC members competing. Congratulations to Calum Gregor and Scarlett Manzoni who finished respectively 14th and 23rd out of 109 Optimist sailors, and to Neil Pryde who won the IRC 1 Division on Hi Fi and Simon Powell who finished 9th on Sell Side Dream. Rolf Heemskerk and David Yourieff came within a whisker of winning the Platu division Coronation Cup – losing on countback when the last day’s racing was cancelled due to lack of wind. We were also well represented at Antigua Week which was held from 29 April to 4 May. Nick Burns on his chartered yacht Lancelot II was 2nd in his Division (CSA 3) and also came 2nd in Best Crewed Charter Yacht, while Geoff Hill on Antipodes won his Division (CSA 1A) and came 2nd in Best Yacht over 60’. Karl Kwok’s Beau Geste won Line Honours in the Transpac Los Angeles to Tahiti race, finishing in 14 days, 5 hours, 9 minutes, 22 seconds. She finished during daylight hours enabling the firstever Tahiti Race finish photos to be taken, since all other finishes have been during darkness. (Continued on page 8 )

General Manager’s Message Well, that has to have been the fastest year of my life, as it seems like only five minutes ago that I was writing my first Ahoy! message. And what a year it has been. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the members and staff who have made me feel so welcome and settled at the Club and into Hong Kong life in general. This truly is a fantastic Club that members should be rightly proud of. To reinforce that message still further, it has been a busy few weeks for awards for RHKYC. On behalf of the Club I was delighted to receive the Yacht Club of the Year award at the China (Shanghai) Boat Show last month. This was only the third running of the Asian Marine and Boating Awards, and the second time our Club has won Yacht Club of the Year. Not content with that, in the Asia Boating Awards, this time hosted in Hong Kong, we also won the Best Asian Yacht Club of the Year for the third year running, together with the Best Asian Regatta of the Year for the China Coast Regatta, making this the third year we have won this Asia Boating Award and the second year for the China Coast Regatta.

The sailing season officially ended last month with a successful Spring Regatta over the weekend of 5 and 6 May. It was a fantastic regatta, epitomising just how good racing in Victoria Harbour can be. By the time you read this, the Sunset Series and your opportunity for Friday night sailing in the harbour will have already begun. I hope you have all signed up. Last month we held a number of back-of-house tours in the lead up to the members’ forum on the Long Term Development of the Kellett Island Clubhouse. We have received some excellent feedback, with many members appreciating for the first time how essential it is that we establish a cohesive Master Plan for the future. The Working Group has tried to provide the facilities that members will need in the future, whilst addressing the key issues of access difficulties for members within the Clubhouse and those of our staff in delivering the level of service that members have, quite rightly, come to expect at their Club. Also in May we were pleased to welcome Jo Ruxton and Craig Leeson of Plastic Oceans to the Club. For the last three years they have been working on a documentary about the damage caused to our oceans by plastic pollution, and they showed excerpts from the film on the Main Lawn. Plastic Oceans hope to host a larger event in the summer,

possibly with the involvement of David Attenborough. Pollution of the ocean and shoreline is something that affects us all, and I hope many of you will join in with our coastal clean-up of Kellett Island on World Oceans Day, 8 June – more details on page 26. Summer is just around the corner, and our hugely popular ‘Pool Parties with Giant Inflatable’ begin this month, with parties on 16 and 30 June. Make sure you book early for these as they fill up very quickly. Coming up on 14 June we have a Cantonese speaker dinner with Chung Kin-man. In 2003 Chung became the first Hong Kong person to conquer the highest mountains on the seven continents, and in 2005 he trekked to the South Pole to become the first Hong Kong person to complete the extreme 7+2 Challenge (conquering the highest mountains on the seven continents, and the two Poles). Chung will be sharing his experiences and photographs with members in the Compass Room and it promises to be a fascinating evening. Also coming up in the Compass Room this month is our Father’s Day lunch buffet on 17 June. Why not show your appreciation of your Dad by treating him to the fabulous buffet our kitchen team have devised for the day. The Electoral General Meeting will be held at 1800hrs on 12 June. By now you will all know who is standing for election, and I look forward to seeing as many of you there as possible, to vote in your new Commodore and committee members. The past month has seen both the junior rowers and the Royal X-Team dragon boaters launch their racing seasons, and next month will see the first serious overseas entries for the Rowing Section. The rowers will have men’s crews heading to the UK for the Henley Royal Regatta, while there are a number of Club members in a Hong Kong-wide team of ladies’ outrigger paddlers training up for the big Molokai event in Hawaii. I know a lot of you, like my family and I, participated in the very enjoyable Big Day Out at Middle Island last month. Up to 1,000 boats will muster on the River Thames in preparation for Her Majesty the Queen to take part in the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant. The Royal Barge and flotilla of boats will then proceed along the Thames from Chelsea Harbour to Tower Bridge.

Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Services of Thanksgiving and Royal Procession Tuesday 5 June, Compass Room and Main Bar, 1930hrs to 2300hrs The formal celebrations for the Jubilee will include the Royal Procession from Buckingham Palace to St Paul’s Cathedral, a thanksgiving service, the return of the Royal Family to Buckingham Palace, the traditional balcony scene and the fly-by from the Royal Air Force. The celebrations will be shown on screen in the Main Bar from 1700hrs to 2000hrs and 2100hrs to 2200hrs. Lawn catering will be available from 1800hrs to 2100hrs. A special set menu will be served in the Compass Room from 1930hrs. The price of $420 per person includes a 3-course dinner and a glass of Champagne for the Loyal Toast.

Kellett Island Shoreline Clean-up

To mark World Oceans Day we are organising a clean-up of the shoreline around Kellett Island, starting at 1530hrs on Friday 8 June. We will keep going until sundown, so please come and join us when you can! If you are sailing in the Sunset Series, why not get to the Club an hour or so early and give us a hand? Please wear a hat, sunscreen and sunglasses to protect yourself, and wear shoes that will grip and that you don’t mind getting wet! We will provide gloves and rubbish bags. In 2003 Chung became the first Hong Kong person to conquer the highest mountains on the seven continents. In 2005, he trekked to the South Pole to become the first Hong Kong person to complete the extreme 7+2 Challenge (to conquer the highest mountains on the seven continents, and the two Poles). Chung Kin-man loved mountains when he was a child and dreamed of climbing to the top of Lion Hill. As a young man he moved abroad and in 1978, he climbed Mt. Blanc, the highest mountain in France. He almost lost an ear to frostbite during that expedition, and realised that returning safely is one of the most important things in mountaineering. Chung continued mountain climbing over the next few years, then in 1985 he returned to Hong Kong and started an outdoor equipment shop in Mongkok, turning his interest into his career. He also started the Hong Kong Mountaineering Union to teach mountaineering skills. From 1997 to 2003 he climbed six of the highest peaks on the seven continents, leaving only Mt Everest unconquered. From 1992 to 2003 he made the attempt five times, eventually succeeding at 0445hrs on 31 May 2003 at the age of 50. After this, Chung decided to complete the 7+2 challenge. With a strong belief in his motto (Plan your work, work your plan), he again achieved his goal and became the first Hong Kong person to finish the challenge – and one of fewer than 10 in the world.

W o rds a n d p ho t o s : G u y N o we l l , S ai l - W o r ld. com After seeing a lot of big boat regattas recently, it was a real refresher to be on the water over the weekend of 21 to 22 April for the MINOX Middle Island Regatta. 82 entries (and there are plenty of regattas which would love to be able to say ’82 entries’!) produced four divisions – Optimist, 29er, Div A (420, Wayfarers, Lasers, Laser Bahia, Laser 2000, RS 500, RS 400) and Div B (RS Feva, Laser Radial, Laser 4.7). With some of those being double-handed, that meant a total of 114 sailors out on the water. It looked good – really good.

eather-wise, Saturday afternoon was not exactly Hong Kong in a party frock. There was enough southwesterly breeze to start proceedings, but not sufficient to blow away the clinging pall of haze draped over Deep Water Bay. Never mind, PRO Charlie Manzoni was on top of it all, and set inside/outside trapezoid courses to keep everyone moving and racing, and leaving enough organisational slack in the system to allow shortened courses towards the end of the afternoon. (Your Humble Reporter hasn’t been on a dinghy race course for a while, and had to ask about the courses laid, ouch! – but hey, if the youngsters can figure it out…) 12 | June 2012

Two races on Saturday, with the second shortened by the dying breeze, and back to Middle Island in time for tea. By that time, Calum Gregor had opened the score sheet in the Optimist class with two straight wins, with David Tulloch/Vincenzo Sicignaho pulling off the same trick with an RS400 in Div A, and so had James Johnson in a Laser Radial in the B Division. Nathan Bradley/Cosmas Grelon were leading the 29er class with 2,1 but only had the lead from Florrie Manzoni/Isabel Tulloch (1,2) on countback. Clearly, all divisions were going to see some fierce competition the next day.

Sunday looked a great deal nicer on the water – and, indeed, in the pictures! Sunshine, and a solid 10kts from due east, and the PRO took the combined fleets out of Repulse Bay and round to Stanley. Div A and B and the 29ers were all very well behaved, and fired off three races in quick succession. Some ‘youthful over-enthusiasm’ from the Optimist sailors gave rise to two General Recalls (the last two starts being black-flagged) and 12 disqualifications before race 4 got under way. After five races for all classes, Calum Gregor (Optimist) left himself in the happy situation of having to discard one of his five first places to score a clean 4 points. ‘Closest to the pin’ was Sui Ka Chun with 12 points, and then

Sophie Tulloch on 16. Predictably enough the 29ers made a fight of it, with Grelon/Bradley (2,1,1,2*,1) coming out on top after Manzoni/ Tulloch dropped their lead in the last race with a dodgy spinnaker hoist and a stumble – not quite a capsize – at the top mark. With fast skiffs, everything can change in a moment, and it did, with the young ladies recording 1,2,4,1,4* and being forced to keep a fourth place on the card. Wan Chi Wai and Tzu Sui Lun (420) took out the A Div with just 7 points (3,5*,1,1,2) from five races, sailing a 420, and James Johnston (Laser Radial) also scored a clean sheet of first places to discard a bullet and take home the title for Div B.

The prize table was groaning at Middle Island. Binoculars from title sponsors MINOX, emergency mobile phones from SpareOne, and bottles and product from Pocari Sweat (which were kindly distributed to all competitors) meant that absolutely nobody went home empty-handed. Events such as the MINOX Middle Island Regatta, involving sailors from RHKYC, HHYC, ABC and HK Sea School, demonstrate that small boat sailing is alive and well in Hong Kong. Some of the competitors will be competing in the dinghy classes at the Top of the Gulf Regatta (5 to 8 May), with some tackling the Thai National Optimist Champs – watch this space.

ifty years have passed since the inaugural Rolex China Sea Race. Commodore Ambrose Lo commented that, “A Golden Anniversary is a significant milestone for any sailing event, and the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club is proud that the 565-nautical mile course from Hong Kong to the Philippines has become Asia’s premier offshore race.” This year the winners of Line Honours and IRC Overall were awarded Rolex Oyster Perpetual Yacht Master timepieces at the official prizegiving ceremony held in the Compass Room. Geoff Hill, owner of the Dubois 90, Genuine Risk, commented that ‘time’ was the biggest challenge for them in this race. “We only had limited time to commission the boat and tune her up, but the combination of an experienced crew and some serious international racing stars proved to be a winning formula.” Sailing with Geoff was one of Australia’s most experienced and well-known yachtsmen,

Syd Fischer, who will be leading Genuine Risk’s Australian programme later in the year for the Rolex Sydney to Hobart Race. Also on the crew was David Witt, a worldclass yachtsman who previously ran Grant Wharington’s Skandia. The boat will compete in the Koh Samui Regatta in May before being delivered to Australia. Singapore entry Zanzibar owned by Jonathan Mahoney was the winner of IRC Overall. Zanzibar had some tough competition from the likes of Neil Pryde’s Hi Fi and the Philippines’ entry Jelik 5 owned by Judes Echauz, both of whom have won the race in previous years. Mahoney’s reason for entering the race was simple, “the boat is not configured for around-the-cans racing and I love offshore sailing, so the Rolex China Sea Race was a natural choice. Many Hong Kong boats compete in regattas around the region, and I thought it was time that someone returned the compliment. I am glad we did,

what was needed to get through a long schedule of 10 flights totalling 20 matches for the day. However, as we have seen so often before, the sea breeze off the south of Hong Kong Island is fickle to say the least, and within five minutes of the first flight starting the breeze was down to single digits. With a significant tide racing was slow and not particularly exciting, except for a memorable leeward mark rounding when two boats managed to entangle themselves. The breeze quickly faded to ‘unsailable,’ and the decision was made to move the course back towards Middle Island in an effort to find wind with less tide. While discussing the options Richard Knight was out breeze hunting and it wasn’t long before the call on the radio came that 10 to 15kts had been found in the bay of Mo Tat Wan off Lamma. This sweet spot was only big enough for short courses set for match racing and within the hour racing was back on.

The format for the series was changed for this season, meaning that the climax would be two events, the National Championships (29 April and 1 May) and then the International Regatta (11, 12, 13 May).

Nationals On 29 April and 1 May five skippers sailed a double round robin followed by semis and finals. Racing on day one took a while to get going as the hunt for breeze went on until about 1300hrs when RO Inge Stromf-Jepsen settled for 5-7kts in Deep Water Bay. In the 18 | June 2012

Teams were now being tested with their boat handling as well as their match racing tactics. At the completion of the second round robin it was Jono Rankine and Peter Backe on equal points, followed by Marty Kaye in third and Cosmas Grelon in fourth, and the end of the regatta for Gordon Gregor.

Peter was ranked first as he had defeated Jono in the second round robin, and he selected to sail against Cosmas in the semis leaving Jono to compete against Marty. Both semis were first to two points (‘match racing speak’ for best of three) and Peter and Jono only needed the first two matches to see off their competitors to set them up for the final. In the third and fourth playoff Marty defeated Cosmas while all eyes were on the final as it was pushed to a third match.

get back in front only to lose out on the next shift. With the windward mark changed for the second lap, Peter again closed the gap and chased down the final run to the finish. It was a photo finish with less than two metres between them, and Jono Rankine ahead by a bowsprit. Our thanks to all the competitors for showing off some great match racing, and also to the volunteer Umpires and Race Committee who made the event happen, particularly to RO Inge Stromf-Jepsen who got us through the races. ISAF Match Racing Umpire Clinic This Clinic is the first of its kind in Hong Kong. Initiated by Marty Kaye of the Hong Kong Match Racing Association, it was only made possible with the support of ISAF, the HKSF with funding from LCSD and hosting by the RHKYC. ISAF secured International Umpires Marianne Middelthon and Paco Quinonero to run the Clinic, and they were also supported by Tom Sheppard from Hong Kong and Richard Knight of RHKYC running the logistics and administration of the course. As soon as the RHKYC got involved and started to advertise the Clinic interest snowballed and within 10 days over 40 people had signed up. With such high demand and mostly coming from people new to match racing it was decided to have two clinics run side by side. 24 people were in the main Umpire Clinic with another 20 in the Starter Clinic. All participants took part in the theory and classroom sessions while those in the Umpire Clinic (including participants from Japan, Thailand and China) got hands on experience of umpiring during the Match Racing Nationals. The long term goal of the Clinic was not only to introduce more people to the match racing discipline, but also establish a team of umpires that will be able to help to support local match racing events in the future.

he first ‘regular’ season regatta was a highly successful one for the Club. The depth of our squads and the strong training over the winter showed with all crews taking the top placings in each event. Despite smaller numbers this year, the ladies continued to dominate the 8+ and 4- events. In the 2x Liz and Kate had another crew steer into them, causing a restart of the race, but once things were re-started Catherine and Natalie had a strong win with Liz and Kate coming in second. The men’s crews had an impressive day with wins or a quinella in every event entered.

“just a finger”. You can’t get racing much closer than that! The men then stepped up for a hard-fought race in the Open Single and Invitational race. The rest of the event carried on smoothly, with the crews listening and obeying the umpire’s orders (for once!). It was great to see the inaugural adaptive race, which after successful Wello and Andrew inclusion this year will definitely stay on the race card in the future. After the racing had come to its natural conclusion, the crews headed for a quiet drink to congratulate each other, and celebrate

or the Verdant 1 Regatta, the afternoon of 6 May was one of those close, sticky afternoons with the humidity way up, and 2,000m looking like a really long, hot slog.

First up were Ben Schrader and Daniel Wilkes in the Division 3 sculls. This was Daniel’s first experience of racing at Sha Tin, and in lane 7 over 2km, he had certainly been given a hard way to start his racing career. Both Ben and Daniel rowed solidly all the way down the course, with Ben fighting hard to get past and then retain his lead over the other challenger for third place. This was just one of some really gutsy, sterling performances over the course of the afternoon.

Despite the excitement of this year’s Boat Race on the Thames, complete with protesting swimmers, restarts, clashes and breaking of oars, and protesting coxswains, numbers were down for competitors at the Hong Kong edition of the race. Despite this, there were plans to make up for the reduced numbers by adding some extra excitement for the rowing crews. Unbeknown to the oarsmen as they prepared to start, the Rowing Manager had secreted a stealthy swimmer on the course who was ready to strike. As the race started, the swimmer sprinted into position while the umpire ‘red flagged’ the race and called an emergency stop. The shock and surprise soon gave way to giggles once the rowers realised what had happened. Many thanks to Greg Austin, (not just a rower, a swimming instructor too!) for volunteering to be the imitation irritating swimmer for the day.

Scarcely back to the landing stage from their sculls race, Ben Schrader and Daniel Wilkes next rowed together in the Division 3 double scull, coming home in second place to win the silver medal. This was a very commendable performance indeed, vigorously cheered on most of the way by Paul and Toby on the bank. All of the younger rowers competing had recently been putting in a second outing per week at Sha Tin on Saturday mornings, and Toby and Paul were delighted with these performances against – in every case – very respectable opposition.

Men’s OC6 finishing

Around Beaufort Race Words: Kong Man Ng

n the Chinese culture the dragon is taken to be a real being with supernatural powers, symbolising strength, power, prosperity and success. The crews of the paddling section showed the dragon spirit by their strong presence and outstanding performance, kick-starting racing in the Year of the Dragon. Outrigger coach John Pache commented “…Not only did we blow our own cobwebs away, but also those of some of the other clubs.” The Around the Beaufort Race ran a 16km course, starting from the Sea School pier on Stanley Main Beach, towards and around Beaufort Island anti-clockwise, round the yellow buoy at Cape D’Aguilar, and then back to the Sea School pier. The Club crews took part in the coastal rowing category, and the men’s OC6, the women’s OC6, and the OC2. The air was hot. The sky was in shade, and the sun hiding. The water was flat and calm. A perfect day for a rowing race. The coastal rowing crews were a mix of experienced and developing rowers, some of whom had no race experience at all. They were ably led by our trans-Atlantic legend Simon Walpole. The ‘social development rowers’ Stephen Pang, Khoon Chong and Man Ng settled themselves into a quad,

and their high anxiety at the start of the race lessened with the presence of experienced rower Brian Henderson; and our lovely, and always joyful Cally Williams taking the cox position. The two doubles saw Simon and Graham Rhodes as one team, and Matt Torlesse and Guy Fulton as another. At the start line were two other coastal rowing quads from the Sea School, and these young crew appeared fearlessly energetic. This gave the ‘social development rowers’ enough of a fright for Stephen, the stroke of the quad, to start the race with a rating so high that everyone was instantly worried that the 16km distance would be difficult to cover. The crew pulled off fast and strong and in no time, were well ahead of all the other coastal rowing sculls. Astonishingly, the crew remained strong, with Brian shouting instructions to the relatively novice rowers on

board. On approaching Beaufort Island, the quad could only see in its vicinity the outrigger canoes. After the first turn round Beaufort Island, the other coastal sculls were no longer in sight, and it remained so for the rest of the race. The ‘social development rowers’ flew their way back home, at an amazing breathtaking time of 1:17:18, which was nearly eight whole minutes ahead of the second coastal quad from the Sea School. The coastal doubles were well composed, and they hit the finishing line with Simon and Graham coming first in a time of 1:27:55, followed by Matt and Guy in 1:31:12. The outriggers faced strong competitors from the Hong Kong Island Paddle Club, the Hong Kong Outrigger Canoe Club, the Lantau Island Outrigger Canoe Club and the Lamma Outrigger Canoe Club. The women’s OC6 pushed hard and strong, making it difficult for the winning HKIPC B crew to relax at any stage during the race, touching home a mere 20 seconds after the winner at a record time of 1:23:10 to take the second prize. The men’s OC6 also did well even though it was made up of a scratch crew. They sprinted with full power and tireless energy to assume second place in the category at 1:10:24. The two OC2s also recorded an exceptional time by finishing at 1:26:24 and 1:28:04 respectively. The Year of the Dragon looks to be an exciting year for the coastal rowers and the outrigger paddlers, with the ‘social development rowers’ on their way to becoming real athletes. The outrigger paddlers excelled in their efforts and the hard training paid off with some brilliant results. To quote again John Pache’s comments “… this is the springboard for a push to be number one. We know the gap. We know what we need to do to bridge it. Let’s get out there and put the time in.”

Special thanks from the coastal rowing crew to Philippe Gresinski, the Middle Island co-ordinator who has always been friendly and helpful, in bringing novices to the world of rowing, in organising all the wonderful social outings, and in providing valuable coaching, encouragement and opportunities for the ‘social development rowers’ to be involved in serious racing events. Special appreciation has to be extended again to Philippe and his group of Saturday afternoon rowers who did the Mission Impossible in organising to row the quad and the two doubles to Sea School in support of the race with such short notice that the quad had to be managed by only three rowers instead of the regular four.

he annual Stanley to Middle Island race organised by the Club was held on 22 April. It was a lucky day. After days of storms and heavy rain, the weather was splendid with glorious sunshine, calm waters and gentle wind. All crews were in tiptop condition, and the aim was to break the previous records for the 15km race. Simon Walpole started the day by announcing the rules to the fourteen crews from RHKYC, HKIPC and HKOCC racing the different boat categories, while the bright pink OC1 paddled by the experienced Edith Terry sharpened the eyes of everybody.

Rowing World Champs at the end of the year, comprising the experienced Mark Hughes, Andrew Russell, Simon Walpole and David Cotton, and coxed by Natalie Kwan. They were expected to do well, but the ‘Flying Social’ had every intention of maintaining their previous record in the Around Beaufort Race where they surprised everybody with an unexpected clear win. The two women’s doubles saw Sheryl and Pip in one boat, and Kate and Liz in the other. The Club outrigger crews were a mixed OC6 and a pair of OC2 crews, one men’s and one women’s. There were a few members in other crews, in particular the HK Phoenix women’s OC6 who are in training for the Molokai race in Hawaii.

and paddles. The ‘Odd Boys’ pulled away strongly, and remained strong over the whole course of the race, challenged by none of the other boat categories. The ‘Flying Social’ was squeezed aside at the start by a fast starting HK Phoenix women’s OC6, and almost hit the rocks just off the coast. Despite the fast moving surf skis quickly overtaking many of the OC6 and rowing boats, the ‘Flying Social’ held on tight once they settled into pace through the middle of

the race, only to be overtaken by Sheryl and Pip when Round Island came into sight. While Sheryl and Pip pushed harder and harder, the ‘Flying Social’ was tired by the heat of the sun. Cally the cox shouted loud for encouragement to the crew, trying hard to bring the rhythm in phase, while the wind stole her beloved hat. Kate and Liz showed their persistence in the 2x, closing the distance with the ‘Flying Social with a daring chase on entering flatter water in Deep Water Bay. The ‘Odd Boy’ proved to be the strongest, with a convincing win and a brilliant record finishing time of 1hr 01min 00sec, more than 3min clear of the fastest OC6 (the HKIPC men) in 1hr 04min 22sec. Sheryl and Pip were the second rowing boat home in 1hr 15min 48sec, just ahead of the first mixed two man canoe from HKOCC in 1hr 17min 14sec. The ‘Flying Social’ touched the finishing line at 1hr 21min 45sec, just ahead of Kate and Liz who finished in 1hr 23min 30min. The prize-giving was held immediately after the race outside the Boat House, with all athletes still soaked wet with sweat, filled with joy and excitement by the surge of adrenaline and endorphin. There was abundant cheering for the winners and for all who had taken part.

Division 10: We went into our first match of the finals against Pheonix quietly confident, having beaten them 4-1 last time around during the regular season. However this time we were missing Frank and Lance, and that proved to be the difference as we went down 1-3. Carson got the win while Francis, Andrew and Denzo had matches they would prefer to forget, and John got to rest his heels for his grand final later in the week. So it was a disappointing end to the season, but congratulations to the team for a great effort both on and off the court. Individually, we had three players ranked in the top 20: John Lau (3rd), Lance Allen (12th) and Frank Achouch (15th). A special mention goes to Elliot Froidevaux who went through the season undefeated at #1: unfortunately, he did it for the Football Club!

Masters The Masters team ended the season in 7th position, with an 8-12 record. We were able to get some good wins against some of the lower teams, but our consistency against the top teams needs to improve if we want to move further up the table next season. Most importantly, the après squash was as good as ever. Individually, Mansoor Tirmzi (8th). Frank Van Kempen (13th) and Sander Holman (17th) all ranked well and we hope we can get more games out of them through the season next year.

that group in May (hopefully all the teeth will get through that match intact this time). Group C: Yannick Kennel may be our most improved player, 25 points, perfect score, winning all his matches. He is going to be playing in B next month. Paul Dalton was not far off, and should have been selected for B as well, but too many re-entry players will have him stay in C. Gareth Williams, Keith Garland, Roger Dunn and Philippe Bonnet will be going to D, so that Stephen Ho and Richard Kendall can rejoin that

Group.Group D: A few months ago Martin Willcox was struggling in D. But this ex-rugby player is disciplined, competitive, motivated and constantly learning, and today he is at the head of this Group. Peter Cheung was second in this group and will go to E. Chris Brookes, Adrian Pierse, Stewart Carmichael and Liam Drake will join the F Group, just to let Angus, Angelo, Naomi and Ewan form a new E Group. Sam Phillips will join that group, just to taste the water. All groups in June will be highly competitive, but the most important thing to remember is to have fun!

Kellett Golf Society On 7 May a party of 12 led by Adrian Pang, our convenor, set off for Palm Island, China for the first out-of-Hong Kong game since the recent revival of the Kellett Golf Society. Apart from the 0730hrs start at Central pier the day was very successful if somewhat warm. The deal negotiated by Adrian was very good and included a shared cart and caddy, 18 holes and a light luncheon. Transport to and from Hong Kong was very efficient. So well done and thanks to Adrian. The next event will be held on 12 June at Discovery Bay Golf Club. A minimum of 12 people is needed before we can book, so please get your names on the list ASAP. This event could be a match against the Hong Kong Cricket Club. Now that it is getting warmer thoughts turn to possibly moving the golf days to the air-conditioned comfort of indoor matches on a golf simulator. The society will not hold any outdoor events in July or August and will resume again in September.

Racing starts on the evening of Friday 1 June Summer is here in Hong Kong, meaning it’s time for one of the Club’s more fun, relaxed sailing series. The racing starts on Friday evening off the Club line in Victoria Harbour in front of the bar terrace, with the infamous ‘peanut gallery’ always ready to dispense sailing wisdom helped along by sundowner drinks!

Racing is followed by drinks on the pontoons and then an informal prize-giving in the Main Bar. Don’t miss this great opportunity to kick start your weekend! Traffic in Central and access to the Club are becoming increasingly congested early on Friday evenings, so please give yourselves plenty of time to get here for the 1745hrs start. Sharks Getting Results We have reported in previous months on the progress of the RHKYC Sharks sailors, and we are pleased to report on their continued development. At the recent MINOX Middle Island Regatta we saw great performances from so many of our sailors. Sofia-Marie Mascia finished 3rd in Division B sailing her Laser 4.7, while Florrie Manzoni and Isabel Tulloch finished 2nd in the 29er with Henry Salmon and Aymeric Gillard closely in 3rd. In the Optimists we had Calum Gregor finish with a clean sweep of 1st places claiming 1st position overall, followed not far behind by Sophie Tulloch in 3rd. There were five RHKYC Sharks Optimists in the top 10, with Clara Krantz in 6th, Ferdi Heldman in 8th and James Davidson in 10th. James also claimed 3rd placed ‘Under 12’ showing the depth in the Optimist Squad. We are extremely pleased that the hard work over the last four years is now showing its reward. Best of all, we had no less than 27 RHKYC Sharks taking part in the Middle Island Regatta!

International Regattas Scarlett Manzoni and Calum Gregor also travelled to Thailand to compete in the Thai Optimist Nationals that took place alongside the Top of the Gulf Regatta in early May. This regatta attracted a fleet of 110 Optimists from nine countries. We are very pleased to report that Scarlett finished 23rd and Calum finished 15th (and 3rd international sailor). This really was a brilliant effort from them both. Next stop is the Asian Championships in Sri Lanka in June where they will also be joined by Sharks team mates Sophie Tulloch, Ferdinand Heldmand and Clara Krantz. The team will be accompanied by coach Richard Knight so look out for the updates on the Sharks Facebook page.

Summer Sail Training The Youth Summer Sail Training Course schedule has been available since midMarch. Don’t miss your chance to take advantage of priority booking as RHKYC members up until one month before the course starts. These courses are always popular and fill up fast. Those of you fortunate enough to have heard Jo Ruxton of Plastic Oceans speak at the Club earlier this month would most likely have gone away feeling depressed and angered by the scale and impact on the marine environment of ‘disposable’ plastics. Comprising many of the production crew who brought us Blue Planet, the celebrated BBC documentary that showcased the beauty and diversity of our seas and oceans, the Plastic Oceans organisation is currently producing a film that will show the reality of life in today’s waters. The underlying message from Jo’s talk is that there is no such thing as ‘disposable plastic’, and that the impact of plastics that slowly break down into smaller and smaller pieces until they resemble small fish, shrimp or krill is having a devastating effect on all forms of marine life, from whales to fish and seabirds, and ultimately through the food chain to humans. As members of the boating community we find ourselves at the forefront of this problem, and sailing or rowing in Hong Kong we witness the problem on a daily basis. Whilst we may not be able to solve all the issues, we must certainly make sure that we are not part of the problem. Here are just a few things that we as individuals can do to help: • Throw nothing overboard • Minimise the use of plastic products onboard • Spend a few minutes each time you go ashore or to a beach to clean up – carry spare rubbish bags on board for this purpose • Separate plastics from other recyclable rubbish onboard (paper and aluminium), and dispose of rubbish at recycle bins on shore • Notify the authorities of any rubbish ‘trouble spots’ • Volunteer your crew for one of Hong Kong’s Coastal Cleanup events • Support local organisations who are committed to raising awareness and providing solutions to the problem

Typhoon Season By the time this article goes to print we will be firmly into the typhoon season. Records show May and December to be the ‘shoulder months’ for tropical cyclone activity in the South China Sea, with the highest frequency recorded in August. The Marine section of the Club’s website has some advice and guidelines for boat owners on typhoon procedures. You are advised to make sure your insurance is up to date and that it provides appropriate cover, that all mooring lines are in good condition and well protected against chafe, that roller furling headsails and canvas covers are removed and safely stowed if you plan on being away for any length of time, and that cockpit drains are clear and bilge pumps fully operational.

Moorings and Hardstanding As part of the process of improving the provision and usage of moorings at the Club, the Marine Committee is currently reviewing the basis on which moorings and hardstanding services are priced and charged. Currently moorings are effectively provided at a cost basis to users, with any ‘surplus’ being spent on bi-annual maintenance and sampan service. There is no contribution from mooring users to a capital reserve that is required to make improvements to the moorings. This will be assessed over the coming months, and any changes in pricing policy will be clearly communicated to the membership in due course. 30 | June 2012

Summer Pool Parties with Huge Inflatable Saturdays 16 and 30 June The hugely popular series of pool parties is back and the first one is on 16 June! The inflatable will be in the pool from 1800hrs to 2200hrs together with other smaller inflatable toys. Guests are welcome and a buffet will be available at $268 for adults and $188 for children (age 3 – 11). Reservations are required and the Poolside will only be ‘open’ after 1800hrs on the day of the event to members and their guests who have booked. Thursday 7 June – Compass Room Château Haut-Marbuzet is a Bordeaux wine estate in the Saint-Estéphe appellation area of the Haut-Médoc. Although its origins go back to the 18th Century, the estate only emerged as a leading quality producer from 1952 after Hervé Duboscq acquired it. Today, his son Henri Duboscq is the winemaker and owner of Haut-Marbuzet, along with Château Chamber-Marbuzet and Château Tour de Marbuzet.

會長通訊感激各位義務委員會委員及整個管理團隊的努力，令香港遊艇會於本年度再次獲得三個業界獎項！香港遊艇會連續兩年得到「年度最佳遊艇俱樂部」；年度亞洲地區最佳遊艇俱樂部」和「中國海岸帆船賽」成為「年度亞洲地區最佳帆船賽」。我希望多謝各位會員就吉列島之長遠發展給予我們很多寶貴的意見。重申我在上一期通訊中提及到這個改善計劃是為了會所的未來及香港下一代的帆船及划艇發展。理事會正努力尋求不同籌集資金的方案，包括以主要贊助人命名房間、設施或建築物等。如果各位希望協助這個計劃和支持會所未來發展的話，請與我或任何一位理事會成員聯絡。自2010年，我們率先提議改善公眾貨物裝卸區和銅鑼灣避風塘以優化海港康樂設施，以配合香港作為亞洲國際都會的發展，我們同時亦積極爭取更多的船泊碼頭及供船隻使用的設施。感謝副會長及策略籌劃委員會各委員的努力，令計劃有相當顯著的進展。最新發展是在五月份，海濱事務委員會的其中一個專責小組 - 水域與陸地連接專責小組聯同多個政府部門的代表來臨吉列島參觀及了解更多有關我們的長遠發展方向和就各方面提出的建議。在帆船方面，「春季帆船賽」於五月五和六日完滿結束，賽事前的整個晚上狂風雷暴，但非常幸運，週末風和日麗。九十四艘帆船參加共三場賽事。恭喜賽事總冠軍 “Ambush 號 ” 和各組別之冠軍得主。在同一個週末，有會友參加了勞斯萊斯幻影系列的試車活動，幸好一些在海上的「超凡」駕駛技術未有在試車活動中出現。恭喜於五月十一至十三日舉行的「法國巴黎銀行香港對抗賽委員會國際邀請賽」冠軍得主來自瑞典的 Peter Backe，非常高興看到來自不同國家的選手參予這個賽事，亦期望香港遊艇會在未來舉辦更多類似的比賽。雖然「春季帆船賽」為2011至2012年度帆船賽季劃上句號。但不要忘記由六月一日開始連續十二個星期五（七月六日除外）上演的「黃昏帆船賽系列」。在此預祝代表香港OP級帆船協會出席於六月二至十日在斯里蘭卡舉行的亞洲 Optimist 帆船錦標賽」的 Sharks 帆船隊隊員和參加於六月九至十六日於達特茅斯舉行的「J/80世界錦標賽」的J/80帆船選手一切順利。我們一直積極參與不同的海外賽事，如有四位會友參加了在五月四至八日舉行的「Top of the Gulf 帆船賽」。恭喜 Calum Gregor 和 Scarlett Manzoni

在賽事中分別於一百零九位參賽者中排行第十四和二十三；而 Neil Pryde 的 “Hi Fi 號 ” 和 Simon Powell 的 “Sell Side Dream 號 ” 分別於國際讓分賽第一組比賽中勇奪冠軍和第九名。在「加冕盃帆船賽」之Platu組別賽事中，Rolf Heemskerk 和 David Yourieff 與冠軍隊伍競爭相當激烈，八場賽事後，總成績打成平手，而最後一場賽事因風勢不足被迫取消，須要以第八場賽事的結果定輸贏。最後，他們以一名之差，只能屈居第二。在四月二十九至五月四日舉行的「安提瓜島帆船週」中，Nick Burns 以他租用的 “Lancelot II 號” 在CSA 3組別中得到亞軍，同時得到「最佳租用帆船船員」第二名；Geoff Hill 的 “Antipodes 號 ” 則於CSA 1A組別中同樣得到亞軍並獲得「六十尺以上最佳帆船」獎。

會友郭志樑的 “Beau Geste 號” 於 Transpac 遊艇會舉辦的「洛杉磯至大溪地帆船賽」中以十四日五小時九分二十二秒完成賽事，奪得首名衝線的榮譽。由於她衝過終點時是白天，令她的衝線相片成為首張被成功拍攝到的賽事衝線相片（因為之前的首名衝線時間均在晚上）。過去一個月同樣是年青划艇手和 “Royal X-Teams” 龍舟隊之賽季下水禮。下一個月划艇部會參加他們的第一個重要賽事，男子划艇隊將會參加在英國舉行的「皇家 Henley 划艇賽」，而女子外舷划艇隊同樣積極備戰在夏威夷舉行的「Molokai 賽事」。相信不少會友和我一樣，在五月享受了一個愉快的中途島日並在當日嘗試到不同種類的帆船。這個月，大家同樣可以享受吉列島日和為慶祝伊利沙伯女王二世登基鑽禧紀念的一連串活動。如果還未有為你的孩子報名參加暑期帆船訓練班的話，請盡快報名，因為這些訓練班非常受歡迎。最後，選舉大會將於六月十二日（星期二）舉行，我希望大家能夠踴躍出席，選出我們新一屆的會長及各理事會成員。盧浩然香港遊艇會會長

飲食快訊

總經理通訊時間過得很快，不經不覺在香港遊艇會工作已經一年了，回想第一次為 Ahoy! 寫通訊就像剛剛五分鐘前發生的事。我希望藉此機會，感謝各位會員及同事的熱情及幫助，令我很快便投入香港遊艇會這個大家庭和香港的生活。香港遊艇會的確是一個藉得各會員引以為傲的會所。最近香港遊艇會得到不少業界的獎項。我十分榮幸能夠在四月份代表香港遊艇會出席中國（上海）國際船艇技術設備展覽會暨第三屆亞洲船艇行業頒獎盛典並接受「年度最佳遊艇俱樂部」獎，這已是香港遊艇會連續兩年成為該獎項的得主。除此之外，在香港舉辦之2012亞洲遊艇頒獎盛典中，香港遊艇會更兩度蟬聯「年度亞洲地區最佳遊艇俱樂部」，而我們主辦的「中國海岸帆船賽」亦連續兩年成為「年度亞洲地區最佳帆船賽」。隨著五月五及六日舉行之「春季帆船賽」完滿結束，2011/12年度帆船賽季亦劃上句號。大家都在漂亮的維多利亞港欣賞了一場非常精彩的賽事。當大家看到這期通訊時，逢星期五黃昏舉行的「黃昏帆船賽系列」已經展開，希望大家沒有錯過這個機會吧。

上一個月，我們舉辦了「吉列島長遠發展論壇」和多個在論壇前舉行的參觀團。我們得到很多正面的回應及建議，很多會員均認同會所需要一個長遠發展的計劃。計劃之工作小組向各位會員展示了一些未來發展的需要，並同時改善會所內的會員通道以及職員的後勤設施。五月份，我們十分榮幸邀請到 Plastic Oceans 的 Jo Ruxton 和 Craig Leeson 在 Main Lawn 分享一套有關塑膠對我們的海洋所造成之影響的紀錄片。Plastic Oceans 希望在暑假期間與 David Attenborough 合作舉辦一個大型活動。海洋及海岸污染對我們影響深遠，我希望大家可以抽空出席六月八日《世界海洋日》，於吉列島舉行的「海岸清潔大行動」，詳情請參閱26頁。炎夏即將來臨，備有大型充氣滑梯的「炎夏泳池派對」將於六月十六和三十日舉行，這個派對非常受歡迎，請盡快訂位。六月十四日在 Compass Room 將會有一個以廣東話進行的「嘉賓演講暨晚宴」，我們請來嘉賓 — 探險家鍾建民先生，為我們分享他的故事 —「兩極、珠峰、情話」及一些他的歷險相片。鍾建民先生於2003年成為首位成功攀登七大洲最高峰的香港人；於2005年，他徒步滑雪至南極點，成為香港首位完成「7+2」壯舉 (「7+2」是指攀登七大洲最高峰，且徒步到達南北兩極點的極限探險活動。) 的探險家。相信這將會是一個精彩的晚上。同樣在 Compass Room，六月十七日為大家安排了父親節自助午餐，歡迎各位與父親來到會所享受一頓由我們廚師為大家準備的豐富午餐，以表達對父親的敬意。選舉大會將於六月十二日，晚上六時三十分舉行。相信大家都知道候選人名單，我十分期待各位能夠踴躍出席，選出我們新一屆的會長及各理事會成員。選舉結果將於當日晚上於 Main Bar 公佈。如果你將會在暑假離港渡假的話，祝你有一個愉快的旅程，期望在假期後在會所見到大家。布馬克香港遊艇會總經理 40 | June 2012

Best Asian Yacht Club and Regatta

New Challenge for Chris

The Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club recently received three awards. The Club’s signature regatta, the China Coast Regatta, was named ‘Best Asian Regatta’ at the Asia Boating Awards in Hong Kong, and the Club was named ‘Best Yacht Club in Asia’ at both the Asia Boating Awards and the Asian Marine and Boating Awards, presented at the China (Shanghai) International Boat Show held in Shanghai in April.

On 4 May RHKYC member Christopher Schrader gave a fascinating talk in the Chart Room on the endurance challenges he has undertaken, which include walking across the Gobi desert last year. Each of his adventures has raised money for charity, and Christopher is a member of the Youth Endurance Network (YEN), which ‘aims to change this planet one project at a time’. Their activities include events such as Running to Stop The Traffik, a 24-hour race aimed at increasing awareness of human trafficking and slavery. Christopher’s next adventure is The Race Across Canada 2012 – Cycling to End MS, beginning at 0600hrs on 1 July to raise money for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada. Peninsula Signal 8 This is nothing to do with a typhoon warning! Peninsula Signal 8 is one of the RHKYC entries in the Brewin Dolphin Commodores’ Cup that will be held on the Solent in July. Jamie McWilliam will be competing along with Erivale, a Ker 39 chartered by Nick Burns, and Ante Razmilovic on a Grand Soleil 43 Quokka 8. Hong Kong Team Coordinator Laurence Mead will be helming Erivale in what will be his fifth Commodores’ Cup. We wish the team all the best in their challenge.

PANGAEA Young Explorers Two RHKYC Sharks sailors have been selected to join the next PANGAEA young explorers programme in Africa. The twin brothers Sebastian and Oliver Engelhart, 16, are Grade 11 students at Island School. They will join the boat in Walvis Bay in Namibia in July before heading off to the Great Rift Valley. There they will join five other young explorers from around the world on Pangaea, Mike Horn’s 100ft exploration yacht, where they will be looking at the global and local environment with the aim of making a positive contribution towards changing the world. 42 | June 2012
