Commodore’s Message

The Bridge

I’ve always thought the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club is an exceptional Club but as we’ve been pulling together information to support the Club’s response to the Government’s consultation exercise on Private Recreational Leases this belief has really been brought home. Did you know that over the last year we’ve run over 300 Club races as well as hosting / organsing a whole series of international events (such as the Optimist Asian & Oceanian Commodore Robert Stoneley Championship, the Hong Kong 29er Open, the 2018 29er World Championship, and Hong Kong Race Week / ASAF Youth Cup) and organising the race management support for the Volvo Ocean Race Stopover? That 656 students participated in our youth sail training courses (64% of who were non-members)? That Club members have given over 1,800 days of voluntary service to support our sailing and rowing activities, and 170 members have given time and strategic advice to the club by sitting on one of the many committees? That our charitable foundation is supporting community swimming, literacy, and marine conservation education programs and is working with another charity to give life enriching experiences to children suffering severe illnesses? And this is just a snapshot of some of what we have been doing in what must have been one of the busiest years ever experienced by the Club… With the Spring Regatta now behind us the Club’s official sailing season is now over. With light, shifty winds and strong tides it was an interesting

event. I was delighted that Ronnie Wong, Honorary Secretary General of the Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, accepted my invitation to join me on the committee boat to fire the starting cannon for the first race. As well as being a great show of support for the Club, this was a good opportunity for him to witness the impressive sight of over 80 boats, big and small, bringing life and competition to Victoria Harbour. To keep our adult sailors busy and happy through the summer, the St. James’s Place Sunset Series kicks off on 1 June and will run over the next 12 Friday’s. Even if not taking part, I really encourage members to come down and watch the racing as it is the perfect way to end a busy Hong Kong week. On the junior side, 23 members of the Sharks squad will be heading off to represent the Club in events in the UK, Netherlands and Poland taking our best wishes with them. While the sailors wind down, we are mid-way through the rowing season. Over the May bank holiday weekend a group of 32 travelled to Tokyo to compete in the 12th Toda International Masters Regatta and 68th Toda Regatta. While the older rowers picked up an impressive haul of medals, it was great to see the junior squad doing well too. Congratulations to all, especially the boy’s quad that won the B Final and finishing in seventh place overall beating a number of university crews. The focus has now moved on to the Shing Mun regattas back in Hong Kong. For the dragon boaters, who are already getting some impressive results this year, the focus is on the Championship trophy at the Stanley competition. Fingers crossed they win it again… In closing, I look forward to seeing you at the Club’s Electoral General Meeting on 13 June after which I invite you to attend a Town Hall Meeting which will give members an opportunity to hear what the Club is doing with regards to the Government’s public consultation exercise on Private Recreational Leases and what you, the members, can do too to support.

General Manager’s Message

The Bridge

As I look out of my office window at the stunning blue sky shining over the Closing or Spring Regatta weekend it is obvious that the summer has well and truly arrived. What a fitting end to what has been a spectacular sailing season; 89 boats competing out in the iconic Victoria Harbour with sunshine, blue skies and the stunning Hong Kong skyline as a backdrop. But the summer ‘off-season’ promises to be a lot of fun too with the St. James’ Place Sunset Series General Manager Mark Bovaird running for 12 weeks starting on 總經理布馬克 Friday 1 June. Come on down to the Main Deck each Friday and watch what promises to be great fun and very close racing, right outside the clubhouse.

in 1811, Maison Perrier-Jouët is one of France’s most historic and distinctive champagne houses so this is a champagne dinner not to be missed. For more on these events and other happenings around the Club please check out the weekly emails and the Club’s various social media channels.

In June we celebrate Father’s Day and this year we are stretching the celebrations out over a few days and have invited Two Michelin Star Chef Soenil Bahadoer back to the Club along with his son, One Michelin Star Chef Ryan Bahadoer. Also here are father-son winemakers, Powell & Son, who have selected some fantastic wine pairings to go with the menu. Please take a look at page 49 for details.

I look forward to seeing you at the EGM on 13 June following which there will be a Town Hall meeting to give members an update on how the Club will be responding to the Government’s public consultation exercise on Private Recreational Leases and how you can help with your own submission.

Later this month on 23 June we have two events running. You can choose to either join the Ladies Night at the Poolside or the MidSummer Brazilian Night at Middle Island. On 28 June in the Compass Room we are hosting a Perrier-Jouët Champagne Dinner. Founded

Now, whilst it might still be another five months until the Regatta Ball, I do hope you will have noticed the details for this year’s extraordinary annual event and have marked the date in your calendars as something not to be missed. It will be bigger and better than ever and it will be the first after all the construction project has finished. It has been great to see and hear so many people talking about the event already and how much they are looking forward to the theme – Bohemian Rhapsody. Will you be listening to ‘We are the Champions’ at the Survivors photograph, or to ‘Another one bites the dust’ for all those who can’t make it through the full 12 hour party? Ticket applications are already looking very positive, so get your application in now to avoid disappointment. Full details are available in this edition of Ahoy!

In closing I would just like to say a huge thank you to the crew of Moonblue 2 who manned the Main Bar on the night of the Staff Party so that all the staff were able to attend what was a brilliant party, and to all the members and suppliers whose contributions made for the biggest and best lucky draw ever.

您可能會 在拍攝生存者照片時聽到「We are the Champions」或對那些無法完成 整個12小時派對的人播放「Another one bites the dust」。

t wasn’t a traditional Rolex China Sea Race in terms of wind strength and angle; however it still provided competitors with the challenge that they seek with offshore racing. There was very light wind predicted for the latter stage of the race for the faster IRC 0 division yachts and with the breeze filling in behind this assisted the smaller boats as they made their way towards the Philippines. The 18-year-old multihull record was broken by Karl Kwok’s MOD 70 Beau Geste with top speeds of 37kts and her impressive elapsed time of 38h 30m 07s wiped 9h 31m 40s off the previous race record set in 2000.

The IRC Overall win, from IRC 1 Division, went to Fred Kinmonth and Nick Burns’ GTS 43 Mandrake III (HKG). Fred said, “If you look at the Race itself, it wasn’t very windy; well we had some wind in the middle of the Race, but not quite wide enough for the big boats to take off. We just kept on going with good sail selections. Looking back, I don’t think we could have done better actually. We were lucky – we came down the coast and had a tiny little bit of breeze waiting outside and then we came around the corner and had 22kts of breeze pretty much all the way to the finish. We

just had a very pleasant, lovely race; the weather was fantastic.” Mandrake was followed by YY Yan / YF Liu’s Ker 42 Custom Seawolf (HKG / China) also from IRC 1. Tiger Mok commented on Seawolf ’s 2nd overall, “This was the second or third major offshore race for Seawolf, and I am delighted to see the improvement and willingness to push harder in the race. The boys did a great job! I hope we can be an example for other boat owners from China, who are new to offshore sailing so that more owners take part in this type of race, as well as to prove JUNE 2018 AHOY! |

that anyone with good training, knowledge and experience can perform well in world class offshore racing.” Third overall from the IRC 0 division went to Philippines entry, Ernesto Echauz’s TP52 Standard Insurance Centennial. “We had a very good race. It was trouble-free. Out of all the races we have done it was the most relaxing; no problems at all. It’s very meaningful for us as we have been racing together for more than ten years” said Ernesto. Father and son double-handed entry Philippe and Cosmos Grelon’s Tbs-Aya finished last taking 15th overall and second in the IRC Class 2 behind Glenn Smith’s Grand Soleil 45 Blackjack. On arrival, they said “We wanted to have fun that’s for sure and to finish – which was probably not too difficult as the conditions

were absolutely perfect for us. I think we only had a maximum breeze of 30kts. Sailing double-handed, I think it takes quite a bit of skill; you need to know what you are doing and have a lot of trust in the other person too. The good news we have been sailing a lot together, we know each other perfectly, we don’t argue, and that’s amazing. We had a very cool and quiet race”. On decision making, Philippe said “One says let’s do this or that, and the other says yes okay. I prefer to sail double-handed because we know each very well and there’s no problem.” In IRC Premier Division, Peter Cremers’ Warwick 75 Shahtoosh had an awesome run taking the division win and 5th Overall; climbing up the ladder from 13th in 2016 edition. In the IRC Cruising Division, first time Rolex China

Sea Race competitor Michael Ashbrook’s Jeanneau Sitka took the division win. The on-location prize giving was held on 1 April at the Subic Bay Yacht Club with Mandrake III as the backdrop where the tops of their divisions were awarded battle flags. The official prizegiving was held at the Club on 11 April in the Compass Room where engraved Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master 40s were presented to the Overall Winner and Line Honours winner of the Rolex China Sea Race 2018. The top three winners in each division winners were presented with Daniel Forster’s aerial photographs of their respective yachts during the start. The 2020 race will mark the 30 th edition of the Rolex China Sea Race, and will start on 8 April 2020.

The twenty ninth running of one of the world’s premier offshore sailing events, the 2018 Rolex China Sea race attracted 29 quality international entries from countries as far field as Australia and much of South East Asia, and crew from all corners of the globe. Now in the prestigious stable of Rolex sponsored ocean racing events, the list of past winners reads like the who’s who of yachts and their famous owners. Legendary yachts such as Stormvogel, Ballyhoo, Kialoa, Nirvana, Beau Geste and Ragamuffin to name all but a few, and famous names like

Jim Kilroy, Syd Fischer, Marvin Green, Frank Pong and Karl Kwok.

Looking to add their names to the list this year for a second time were Fred Kinmonth and Nick Burns in yet another of a long line of yachts they have named Mandrake. Their original Mandrake, a Mills 51 was victorious in 2006. Their current Mandrake, the third to bear the name is a GTS 43 launched in 2014 and has had success in numerous events on the Asian yachting circuit but has yet to record victory offshore. Slightly heavier than many of the newer plaining yachts built in recent times, Mandrake III revels in the light

to moderate conditions and this year’s race certainly promised conditions conducive for the boat. Early race forecasts suggested a slow’ish start for the first 24 hours of the race, with a slight strengthening during the middle sector, followed by the traditional light patches approaching the Philippines. Race day dawned and the forecast looked pretty much as predicted. Perfect now just to implement the plan and stick to it. The strategy from the outset was pretty much to be south of the rhumb line for the majority of the race, coming back up into Subic Bay at the end with some angle to maximise pressure. Once

diligence to avoid any incidences, and also passing the oil rigs kept everyone sharp during the wee hours.

again the race started in the harbour and Hong Kong certainly offers one of the worlds most spectacular backdrops for such an event. A few minor incidents during the start lead to some hasty repairs onboard Joachim Isler and Drew Taylor’s Mills 41 Ambush, but for the rest of the fleet it was a relatively easy passage out of the harbour with the breeze 8 to 10kts. The upwind start kept the crews busy but once transiting the harbour and heading into the open ocean the wind gradually freed up as everyone settled into their first night at sea. We had plenty of company the first night, spending the night dodging fishing fleets and their nets, whilst monitoring our progress with YY Yan and YF Liu’s Ker42 Sea Wolf, Jonathan Mahony’s HYD42 Zanzibar, Peter Churchouse’s Warwick Custom Moonblue 2, Ambush and Lo Wing Hong’s HH42 Rampage II in sight for the hours of darkness. The great feature of Easter races is the full moon and it was a glorious night of sailing, flat water, around 10kts of breeze from the east, with a medium jib and genoa staysail. Each time we thought we had left the fishing fleet behind more would appear, requiring due

The only sea life we saw for the day was the usual array of flying fish and the occasional lost bird, but nothing else, maybe a sign of how much fishing is done in the region. The second night at sea began with the last fresh meal before we began the freeze dried food. Night two and progress was steady during the night and by morning temperatures were beginning to get warm and we were now around 450 miles from Hong Kong reaching along in 20kts of breeze still from the ENE. As the day progressed we were able to get a spinnaker in the air for the first time as the speeds picked up and a finish the following day kept everyone focused. We had Moonblue 2 and Rampage II for company during the day, but Ambush had disappeared over the horizon. With little idea of how the fleet was going apart from the twice daily skeds, it was a big boost to spirits when the 1800hrs sked revealed that many of the boats ahead had fallen into

Forty miles to go and the breeze gusted at times to around 25kts, rarely in the past has this happened and now we were pushing super hard to get the job done before sun rise, fearing a shut down of breeze would ruin our chances of a good result. At around 5.30 am with the lights of the camera boat showing us the way in, we crossed the line after 66h 20m 20s of glorious racing across the South China Sea. Some crew were worried by the camera boat lights, but I reassured them that at 5am in the morning they wouldn’t be filming us if we were deep in the results. This was a positive and after exchanging pleasantries we were informed of where other boats had finished and even with mental calculations we worked out we were in pretty good shape overall. The now traditional ‘kettle’ made it on deck as we motored up Subic Bay, everyone enjoying our one luxury onboard, a post race rum and coke. Once ashore we found out that we were in fact in a great position, with the only boat that could challenge us for the overall win being Ant Day’s 50 footer Explorer, but as the day wore on the breeze for them didn’t cooperate as they spent hours drifting around in sight of the finish. So after narrowly missing out the famous Rolex watch in 2012, Freddy was now about to be rewarded six years later with the ultimate prize, the overall win in the Rolex China Sea race. So like a stamp, we licked it, and sent it. Mandrake III – king of the South China Sea for 2018.

Morning bought a gradual rise in sea and air temperatures as we were about 150 miles south east of Hong Kong. The breeze was slightly north of east and freshened enough during the day, allowing a peel to the jib top and we enjoyed an afternoon reaching along in 15 to 18kts of breeze. It was a fairly uneventful day of sailing, the crew making sure the boat was sitting on targets at all times. We had Ambush as a guide for the day and that lifted spirits as we knew if we could see them we had them on corrected time, so there was no slacking off. We had a couple of goes at getting the code zero away but the breeze refused to cooperate, so three sail reaching was the order of the day.

reasonably light breeze and we had made good gains during the day, running with A2 and staysail. We continued to make good progress during the night and as we approached Subic Bay the usual light winds didn’t eventuate and even after getting headed and peeling to a jib we were still making tenkts to the finish.

kts of breeze coming straight out of Lei Yue Mun promised a good start for the Tomes Cup, the last pursuit race in the RHKYC’s Top Dog Trophy Series – four races off the same start line for all Club classes to decide who really has the bragging rights in the Main Bar. (The others are the Lipton Trophy, the Around the Island Race, and the HKRNVR Memorial Vase).

| JUNE 2018 AHOY!

There’s a little bit of history involved, as befits Asia’s no 1 yacht club: the Tomes Cup has been around forever and has been contested under different names. Once upon a time it was the Sugar Refiner’s Cup, but that was in the dim and distant past when sugar didn’t have such a bad rap. Today it is a pursuit race that welcomes all of the Club’s classes (Pandoras, Ruffians, Impalas, Flying 15s, Etchells, J/80s, Sportsboats

and the Big Boat IRC divisions) and races them around a course to the east of Victoria Harbour. Staggered starts, and a 2½ target time for the race, which in theory means that everyone finishes together. In theory. Of course, the trickiest thing about pursuit races is that the first starters (Pandoras, here) might kick off in 10 kts of breeze, with the IRC Big Boats up to an hour later in a completely different wind. But that, as the saying goes, is yacht racing. If you don’t like it, Extreme Ironing is a viable if somewhat less exhilarating. And 10kts is what the middle and late starters caught on the first leg from Kowloon Bay to Shau Kei Wan. There was a healthy outgoing tide of a couple of knots, so the Etchells and Sportsboats and eventually the IRC boats started catching the early starters quite quickly. After Shau Kei Wan it was a long leg back up the harbour to Dock Buoy, and then a close reach to the PWD buoy near North Point, giving the Sportsboats, Etchells and Big Boats another chance to power up the

catch up programme. The next part of the course, from PWD to Tai Koo Shing, was ‘interrupted’ by a huge liner departing from the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal that cast a wind shadow across and out from the Kwun Tong shore and allowed the back markers to gybe set away from the Cruise Terminal and run for Dock Buoy without falling into said hole. Local knowledge helps, and so does an appreciation of cruise lines schedules. At this point the breeze started to back to the north. Jamie McWilliam sailing Etchells ‘Shrub’ reckoned that staying out of the dead zone was worth some 40 places on the water, and sailed into the lead between Tai Koo Shing and Dock Buoy. However, and this was the Moment of Truth, with Nick Burns (Etchells, Gunga Din) snapping at his transom, McWilliam rounded tight at the mark and one of his crew members touched the buoy with an elbow (or was it the Hand of God?) during the spinnaker drop, and Shrub was obliged to peel away for a penalty turn. After that the tacking duel was on…

Meanwhile, veteran pursuit race RO Gareth Williams, watching the circulation very closely from near Dock Buoy, decided that the 2½ hr limit would be best served with a finish line at Gate, steamed east at a brisk rate of knots, dropped anchor, and signalled Gunga Din as the winner at 16.29.54, just 6 seconds inside the target time and a mere 2 seconds in front of Shrub. Wow, indeed.

Top 10 Tomes Cup 2018

So Nick Burns and his merry men were declared worthy winners, McWilliam came away with a 2nd place, and the next boat across the line was Drew Taylor’s Ambush (Mills 41, Big Boat IRC) having started a full hour behind the first Pandora. Which begs the question: in a pursuit race, who ‘enjoys’ the most stress? Is it the first starter who spends a large portion of the race getting a crick in the neck while looking over his shoulder at the advancing horde, or the last starter, cruising up and down the start line and champing at the bit while waiting to be let go?

There were 62 boats in the Tomes Cup race, and more than 80 have participated in the Top Dog Series, proving once again – if proof were needed – that the racing calendar in Hong Kong is stuffed to the doors, and Hong Kong is the place to be to go racing. “Racers go where the competition is,” we have been told. Hong Kong is the hub of sailing in Asia, the RHKYC is the prime racing club in Hong Kong, and long may it continue that way.

With a 6 to 12kt South East breeze, the Impalas cleared out and were the first to round Shek O Rock. Mike Burrell’s Impala 1, representing

With New Zealand looking to be crowned for the fifth consecutive year running, their sole entry for 2018, Andrew Taylor’s Ambush, had their work cut out early. With a steady breeze holding, it was not until Lei Ye Mun Gap that Ambush and the mighty FreeFire, representing England, started reeling in the countries ahead of them, overtaking the Impalas

Further back, Scotland and Ireland were making a play for the title in a close tussle. Scotland’s Impala 1 managing to take the line ahead of New Zealand’s Ambush, with Jamie McWilliam;s Irish team close on their heels. As the Scottish team celebrated their win, crew member Catherine Smith said; “It was really good, great fun”. It was awesome! So glad the forecasted weakening breeze didn’t come in, and we had great breeze the whole way round, so it was fantastic. Great racing!” added fellow Scot, Mark Collins

After racing, the festivities moved up to the Main Lawn for the prizegiving. Pixie Thomas awarded Scotland the Vic Locke Memorial Trophy for the winning nation, along with the renowned ‘national ‘beverage’ for each of the top six winning nations. Sunset Series The ever popular summer Sunset Series will kick off on Friday 1 June with 12 races scheduled throughout the summer months. The series is open to all and is a good excuse to start the weekend early. Sailing with friends in a fun and relaxed event followed by informal beers on the main lawn. The series is a tactical challenge on when to sandbag a race to improve your boat’s handicap. The race track will hopefully be in front of the club which makes it a great event for spectators if you don’t wish to sail. Warning signal is 1740hrs – see you on Friday evenings.

Sunshine Series The Sunshine Series is a great opportunity to sail in the harbour training up new crew before the start of the season in September. Skipper’s wishing to sign up new crew or sailors wanting to find boats please contact the Sailing Office and we’ll try our best to put you in contact with each other.

YMSC Training Day W O RD S: SID NE Y TA N G A ND CHRISTIN A CUL LY | PH OTO S: SID NE Y TA N G A ND PAUL O EN

7 April saw the second ever Training day: Ruffian X YMSC. The training day is an all-in-one tasting menu comprised of theory lesson, rigging, racing and socialising! 11 out of 13 Ruffians took 27 ‘newbies’ out. For those who are not familiar with the event, it is an initiative from the Young Members Sub-committee (YMSC) aimed at getting young people more active in the Club’s class racing scene.

or the more experienced, we are here to connect them with some of Hong Kong’s established boat owners, skippers and crew enabling them to recruit new blood. This is a fantastic platform to meet skippers and potentially work their way onto a crew list. Whatever the motivation or level of experience, it was a great day out (despite competing with the Rugby 7s, zero dropout). Our fleet comprised of Scallywag, Bandolero, Skellum, Diablo, Austerity, Hombre, Picaro, Brigand, Miss Piggy, Victory 9 and Schannuleke – to the owners and skippers – we cannot thank you enough for supporting us. This would not be possible without you! An online registration system designed by the Club offered a quick and seamless sign up experience. In less than a minute, boats and participants have basic info, consent forms and level of experience recorded. We then issue acknowledgement emails and ask them what to expect or prepare. With this system, we found out of the 27 participants, 10 are skilled sailors eager to join a team and two of them even have sea survival certs and PVOLs. Our day started at 1130hrs with registration as we welcomed participants, skippers and crew in the Chart Room. We began with a brief ice breaking session: skippers telling stories of how they caught the sailing bug. Then a basic theory and safety precaution lesson was taught by experienced Ruffian sailors. Afterwards, we headed to the pontoon where our newbies learned to rig and take care of the boats. Remember what they were taught earlier, they were ready to head out for some sea trials and drills. At 1345hrs it was the start of the race! It was a breezy day with 16kts of breeze which certainly proved for an exciting sail. Intensity built up

32

| JUNE 2018 AHOY!

Sailing as all boats approached the start line and teams were shouting at each other and fine tuning strategies. In about two hours all boats completed the race. It was surely competitive and FUN! Results were Schannuleke 1st, Skellum 2nd and Victory 9 in 3rd. The cruise back to the moorings was equally enjoyable in 9kts of breeze. The new sailors were given the opportunity to try out helming and other roles. On the way back, the beers were opened and skippers gave crew a race review explaining racing tactics. Back at Kellett Island, everyone gathered at the hardstanding for a casual prizegiving and group photos. A number of new sailors were recruited on the spot as regular crews and most said they will come back for more. We are so glad that everyone had a great time. Once again, the feedback for the Training Day has been overwhelmingly positive and we are excited about incorporating suggestions into future events. With full support from the Club and you all, the YMSC is growing and learning constantly, taking baby steps in contributing to the local water sports scene. About YMSC Who we are: a committee of eight members and we report directly to Club committee in promoting youth activities for (18-35). Our events: Besides sailing and rowing events, the YMSC also runs social events with excellent vibes, popularity and prizes.

Join Us Please like and follow us on the Facebook @ RHKYC-Young Members. If you are aged between 18-35, eager to serve the Club, please do not hesitate to be part of the YMSC.

YMSC Facts Average member’s age at RHKYC is 54. There are 442 young members out of total 5,856 members (as of May 2018). 33% young members are under age 20. We consist of 87% sailors and 13% rowers of which 63% are male 37% are female.

Red Bull Three Peaks W O RD S: A D RIA N M OWAT | PH OTO S: EST HER N A M

Rowing n 29 April the Club hosted the 11th Three Peaks Race. Reflecting the growing recognition of this unique race which makes the most of Hong Kong’s great hiking and paddling, the event attracted sponsorship from Red Bull and GoPro. The Red Bull Three Peaks Race course was marked by the distinctive logo. Seven teams competed for the Cumming’s Cup and GoPro cameras. We had two teams from VA’A Team France Singapore; appropriately named VTF Cocatrix and VTF Escargots and two teams from VRC Paddle Club; fittingly named after the Hawaiian word for mountain, Muana, and for ocean, Moana. In contrast the three OC6 teams from RHKYC were somewhat more random; Surf and Turf, Team Cat and Wilson or Slinky, depending on who you asked! To add to the spectacle, this year race started with a swim from Middle Island beach. At 0830hrs sharp, 21 swimmers, three from each

canoe, swam around a buoy in the channel and then back to their boats. Competitors then raced around Round Island to the Tin Hau Temple in Repulse Bay. TracTrac provided real time positioning for each team. RHKYC team Cat had a sub one minute lead on VRC Mauna as two competitors from each team started the run up to Violet Hill Peak (436m) and back to the beach. Team Cat set a new course record for the Violet Hill run of 40 minutes and 55 seconds. The outriggers then raced around Chung Hom Kok and Stanley Peninsula to To Tei Wan (Hobie Cat Beach) in Tai Tam Bay. At To Tei Wan, Team Cat’s lead over VRC Mauna was just 12 seconds. Two team members (not those that ran Violet Hill) then raced to Shek O Peak (284m) on the Dragon’s Back with both team

within 2 seconds. As Steve Palmier, coach and team member for the VRC, noted “The key to success was the margins that we made on the running. If you can run quickly down concrete steps, you’ll make up more time.” VRC Mauna was fast going down, setting a new record for the Dragon’s Back Run of 34 minutes and 28 seconds, they were now more than two minutes ahead of Team Cat. The crews then paddled around Cape D’Aguilar and Tai Tau Chau to Rocky Bay (Shek O Back Beach). The final pair of runners race up to the Pagoda (spot height 56m) on Tai Tau Chau and back to Rocky Bay for the finish through the Red Bull arch. VRC Mauna won in 3:51:57, shaving 58 seconds of the course record. It was great to again host VA’A Team France from Singapore. With good media coverage

18th Deep Water Bay Dragon Boat Regatta W O RD S: NICK CHUN G | PH OTO S: NI CK C R A BB A ND J O J O NES

A

s the inaugural race for the 2018 dragon boat season kicked off, all eyes were on the Royal X team at the 18th Deep Water Bay Dragon Boat Regatta who fielded the largest number of entries from a single team ranging from our newly formed Under 18’s division to the Women’s and Men’s open and three mixed crews – this was the strongest team turn out in the Club’s history. As the sun broke through the clouds all of our crews seized the opportunity to make their marks in the initial heats, showing everyone else just what they were up against. Most inspiring were the Under 18’s division who fought fierce competition through two rounds of heats to be awarded joint third place! No doubt we will be seeing great things from this group in the near future. A valiant effort was shown by the Mixed Blue crew who, despite showing great heart,

40

| JUNE 2018 AHOY!

were sadly knocked out at the later stages of the competition. The Mixed Red had a fantastic performance through the heats to produce a nail-biting plate final where they emerged victorious, bringing home the first gold medals of the day. As for the Mixed Yellow, winning both heats then losing gold in the Cup final by a literal dragon nose hair is understandably frustrating. You can hold your heads high with the result and know you only have one place to go up from Silver. I have been blessed to race with many talented crews, and this Royal X Women’s crew was one the most comfortable and controlled crews I have been with in any final race. They didn’t just win, they dominated. They show why our team trains hard together and when it’s time to get the job done, they deliver. Congratulations on your first of many wins this season.

DRAGON BOAT CONTACTS dragonboat@rhkyc.org.hk

This question was asked by our captain to the Royal X Men, “What type of man do you want to be?” minutes before entering the boat for the Men’s Cup final. The question begged to be answered not in words but in action. Each of the twenty paddlers and talented steersman threw everything they had into that race to produce a clear win which would easily answer his question. This was a good start for the team who are all looking forward to our next race. Special mention should be given to our Coach, Men’s, and Women’s Captains who undertake the massive endeavor of organizing the crews, and to the parents of the U18’s crews who came to support the team.

Bilge Pump Checklist W O RD S: WIL L KEENE,

ED S O N IN T ERN ATIO N A L Step #4 Important factors to consider

How many of you have tested the “Actual” capacity of your bilge pump systems?

1. How far offshore do you plan to venture?

Step #1 – Test Existing Pump Capacity a) Pour a known quantity of water into your bilge (at least 20-30 gallons). A 1” hole two feet below water allows 28 gpm into your vessel. b) Turn on your Electric Bilge Pump and use a stopwatch to time how long it takes to empty your bilge. Record the time in your vessel records. c) Pour another 20-30 gallons and empty your bilge using your Manual Bilge Pump. Time the test and count the strokes of the pump needed to empty your bilge. You will need to calculate the volume per stroke of your manual bilge pump. (This is the most important number when determining manual pumping capacity). d) Fill a 2 ½ or 5 gallon bucket with water (not to the top but close to full) and stand in the cabin. Pick up the bucket and empty it out into the cockpit. This will help you understand the sheer weight of the bucket and the awkwardness of lifting it up to or above your shoulders. While doing this test imagine doing it many times in a seaway. Also, take note of your Nav Station location, (typically next to your companionway) with all its electronics and communication equipment. Imagine that getting doused with a bucket of water. NOTE: consider the water level required in your vessel that allows for the use of a bucket (it is often not until the water has risen above the floor boards). e) Record your capacities in electric, manual, and scared man buckets after performing the above tests. Calculate your combined current pump capacity. Calculate total pumping capacity. f) The above suggestions are intended to establish your current baseline bilge pumping capacity. You need to put yourself into the worst case situation to make a reasonable assessment of (1) your electrical pump capacity (2) your manual pump capacity, and (3) estimate how many buckets of water you can throw out of the companionway. NOTE: your physical capabilities need your honest assessment. Step #2 – Understanding How and What to Add for Pump Capacity a) When looking at the capacity of Electric Bilge Pumps it is important to know the approximate distance from the bottom of the bilge to the underside of the deck where the “loop vent” is located for the discharge hose. This height is known as the discharge head. Based on the discharge head and the rated capacity of the pump, you will now be able to calculate the actual capacity of the electric pump. NOTE: A typical 2000 / gallons per hour pump with 6’ of discharge head will actually pump approximately 1,300 gallons per hour, or 22 gallons per minute. The capacity gets reduced further by right angle turns, ribbed hoses, etc. You are almost keeping up with a 1” hole two feet below the waterline (28 gpm). b) Boat manufacturers are required to install an Electric Bilge Pump and a cockpit mounted Manual Pump. However, there is no capacity requirement for either. Step #3 Water in the Boat – the sooner you know this the better What is the first step if you find your bilge full of water, or your bilge alarm goes off? FIND THE LEAK! And stop it by any and all means possible. If you cannot stop it – what can you do to slow it down to a point your pump capacity can handle? a) The more water that comes into the boat, the harder it is to locate the ingress point. b) The more water that comes in lowers the waterline – which simply increases the amount of water, as well as the pressure it is exerting, making it harder to patch or fix. These are the reasons why Bilge Alarms are important as well as regular scheduled inspections of the bilge.

2. Will you be boating in a remote area or one populated with other boats who could help in an emergency? 3. How comfortable / confident are you with your current pumping capacity? 4. Survey available space for additional manual and / or electric pump installations, and the hose runs required. 5. If you are considering adding a Manual pump, think about the ergonomic activity of pumping. Can you brace yourself in a seaway? Can you put your body behind each stroke? These are important considerations, as “sustainability” is the main ingredient in maintaining manual pump output volume. Remember volume per stroke when shopping for a manual pump! 6. Is your bilge compartmentalized? If so, how do you best address that? Most would suggest each compartment have its own bilge pump with its own discharge hose and thru hull. 7. Know your physical limitations, and that of your crew. 8. Know how fast water can come in to a boat. CHART SHOWING FLOW OF WATER IN “GALLONS PER MINUTE” FEET BELOW WATERLINE HOLE DIAMETER IN INCHES 2’ 4’ 1” 28 40 2” 111 157 3” 250 354 *Multiply by 60 for “gallons per hour”

6’ 49 192 433

Step #5 Planning & Prevention a) Install a Bilge Alarm. b) Check all hoses above and below the waterline. c) Check engine exhaust risers and hoses. d) Check sea cocks and all thru-hull fittings for cracks and / or corrosion. Are plugs tied to them? e) Make a plan for rudderpost failure. f) Check prop shaft, rudderpost stuffing boxes and lip seals. g) Clean the bilge and paint it white. This will help you see debris that could clog a pump, hopefully in advance. h) Keep a waterproof LED flashlight handy. If your bilge is deep, tape the flashlight to a dowel long enough to reach the bottom of the bilge. This will help you see debris and any issues happening below the water level. i) Draw a map of the thru hull hole locations in your boat. Check your map when your boat is on the hard and make sure every thru-hull is duly noted on the map. Laminate three (3) or more copies, one for each cabin, and keep them in logical places. Place one on the back of the head door so family and friends have something important to read. It is also good to note the location of fire extinguishers on the same sheet of paper and any other safety tips that you think would be helpful in case of emergencies (which could include incapacitation / injury to the captain and / or master of the vessel). j) Each pump should have its own thru-hull k. Put a sign on your engine intake seacock that says “Leave open if engine is running”. You never know who is closing sea cocks.

Regulations vs. Responsibility In summary, we have seen 45’ LOA vessels launched, tied to a marina, and used as a summer home. We have also seen 25’ boats designed for “coastal cruising” circumnavigating the globe. These guidelines are designed to help boat owners make informed decisions as to the pumping capacity needed for the intended use of their vessels.

Beach Cleanup at Middle Island W O RD S A ND PH OTO S: L AUREN CE W O N G

When we go onto those beaches at Middle Island, we usually do not pay much attention to the litter, but during this cleanup, some of the volunteers commented that when you look close enough, you are almost bound to find some amount of plastic or styrofoam no matter where you look. Some of our more intrepid volunteers explored the rest of Middle Island in search for hidden trash, venturing up the trails alongside the club house, or behind the rack on the hardstand. As such, at the end of the event, we collected over 20 bags of trash and a number of large, rusting metal debris. We will continue to organize beach cleanups this year. Our thanks to the volunteers for a job well done. Do watch out for notices of our next cleanup, and we welcome one and all to help keep our shorelines clean.

Events | Promotions

We had our first beach cleanup of 2018 at Middle Island on Saturday March 17. The event was jointly organized by the Middle Island Sub-Committee and the Family Panel. The weather was perfect for the outing: no blistering sun and just the right temperature! We had a strong support of nearly 40 volunteers, almost half of which are children and teenagers. The event not only helped prevent litter from entering into the ocean, it also raised awareness as to the proper handling of litter around the club and in our everyday lives.

Two Michelin Star Chef Soenil Bahadoer from De Lindehof in Nuenen returns to the Compass Room with his son – One Michelin Star Chef Ryan Bahadoer – and this time they are teaming up with famous winemakers Dave Powell & Son for the Father’s Day period. Treat your Super Dad to a superb meal for an unforgettable time of your life. Chef Soenil Bahadoer’s cuisine is notable for a high dose of creativity, together with exotic influences and a deep understanding of the basic cookery techniques. Combining classic French dishes with herbs and spices with his Hindustani, Surinamese and Indian background, a harmonious combination of taste, smell, colour and forms that provides diners with a tasting trip around the world thanks to an intense explosion of flavours. Since joining De Lindehof in 1995, the incredible, exotic and sensory experience led him to obtain his first Michelin Star in 2004 and the second Michelin Star ten years later in 2014. Going further, he became SVH Master Chef in 2015. Ryan Bahadoer, son of two-star chef Soenil Bahadoer, gets a different workplace. He made the switch from Jiu.nu to the one Michelin Star restaurant De Karpendonkse Hoeve by Ingrid van Eeghem. He is eager, thinks our-of-the box and cooks with bold flavours. Now he is working in The Hotel Eindhoven as Executive Chef, a place to meet new people, get inspired and of course enjoy good food. Dave Powell, the esteemed winemaker from the Barossa Valley and the founder/ winemaker of Torbeck Winery has teamed up with his son Callum and together the two have founded Powell & Son in 2014. Dave was just 19 when he first made wine in the Barossa Valley. After working extensively abroad, gaining winemaking expertise in Italy, France and North America, he returned home to work with Barossa Valley stalwarts Yalumba, Peter Lehmann, Wolf Blass, Saltram and Rockford. It had always been father and sons’ intention to make wine together, and they made their dreams a reality with the foundation of Powell & Son. Honouring the Barossa and Eden Valleys, and the people who planted the vines almost two hundred years before, Powell & Son wines reflect the vineyards from which they come.
