Commodore’s Message At the time of writing we are still amid the Covid-19 epidemic but at least we are back out on the water!

The St. James’s Place Sunset Series will be on throughout the summer months again taking place every Friday evening. I look forward to seeing you there for the race or a sunset drink overlooking the race course.

June is the month for Dragon Boating in Hong Kong and will be an extremely busy period for the Club’s Royal X Dragon Boat team, providing the social distancing measures are lifted to allow our whole dragon boat team to get back on the water for training and race participation. Even if various Hong Kong dragon boat races might have to be cancelled or postponed, I wish every one of you a happy Dragon Boat Festival!

Moving forward let me remind you of the offshore races coming up in the fall 2020 and the first quarter of 2021. The Hong Kong to Hainan Race starts on 23 October 2020 and the 2021 Rolex China Sea Race which will start on 31 March 2021. For those who would like to have a taste of offshore racing or those who are experienced offshore sailors, please register early so as not to miss the chance to sail in these fantastic races.

This month also marks the end of my term as Commodore. The Club’s Electoral General Meeting will be on Wednesday, 10 June to elect a new Commodore, Officers and various other positions in different elected committees. I have to express my heartfelt thanks for everyone who has served on committees for during my term as Commodore and also for those putting themselves forward as nominees, in this challenging time with Covid-19 and economical down turn to serve our Club. Good luck on those running their election campaign. I hope to see as many of you there as possible to vote in your new committee members.

Finally, I wish you all smooth sailing in life and a very enjoyable summer doing our sports or back to travelling and visiting your family overseas.

展望將來，本會將分別2020年第四季及2021年首季舉辦兩場離岸帆船 賽。「香港至海南賽」將於2020年10月23日舉行，而「2021勞力士中國海 帆船賽」則於明年3月31日舉行。如果 閣下欲一嚐離岸賽事的樂趣又或 經驗豐富的帆船運動員欲再次挑戰賽事，請把握機會報名參賽呢！

After the first week of May, some of the social distancing measures were relaxed which enabled our members to get back out on the water after nearly two months of suspension.

The weekend of 16 and 17 May saw Class racing start up again followed by the Spring Regatta, Tomes Cup and Nations Cup sailing events. Our training programme for sailing and rowing are also back on at Middle Island and will continue throughout the summer.

Still in keeping with social distancing restrictions we will continue to provide the Outrigger Canoe Introduction Course, Dragon Boat Development Courses, Stand Up Paddle Board Basics course, rowing training camp and private coaching for summer. These will all be available from June. Please refer to Page 18 to 19 for further details.

General Manager’s Message Well, we are just about half way through the year and we are all no doubt hoping that the second half will be better than the first!

The Bridge

It is a pleasure to see members’ usage of the Club return back to some semblance of normality during the past month, albeit with all of the social distancing measures still in place, and to once again be able to get back out on the water and to restart racing and coaching. We thank all members for their patience, General Manager Mark Bovaird understanding and support of all 總經理布馬克 the measures that have had to be put in place, sometimes at very short notice, which have kept the Club a safe haven throughout these difficult times.

Children in particular (or would it be more accurate to say their parents) have been enjoying being back out on the water with the various sailing, rowing and padding programmes at Middle Island and there were many happy smiling faces to be seen on the pontoons when Class racing started up again in mid-May. On the social calendar this month, there is plenty to keep the younger ones happy through art workshops, be it making a Father’s Day gift, an Art Jam with DIY Brushes or the Tote-Bag Art Jamming. Even the adults can get in on the action with their own tote-bag art jamming but their event also includes unlimited pizza, beer and music! See more details inside.

We are hosting a Krug Champagne Dinner in the Compass Room on 11 June. Krug are the first and only Champagne House to create prestige Champagnes every year since its foundation in 1843. With a couple of weeks to go this event is already sold out, but plans are already afoot to repeat the event next year due to the overwhelming popularity. Whilst on the subject of Champagne Wine Dinners, just as some advance notice we

will once again be hosting a Dom Perignon Wine Dinner and Dance on 28 August in the Compass Room. This has proved to be extremely popular over the past few years, so worth noting in your diary and booking early.

The Oddero Wine Dinner is on 18 June. Poderi e Cantine Oddero is a historic brand from the Barolo region of Italy. This is Barolo at its very best and is paired with a fabulous menu by the kitchen and sommelier team. If you haven’t booked already then please do hurry as spaces are strictly limited.

On 19 June Middle Island is the perfect venue for our Seafood Fiesta where the food will be served directly to your table (and literally on your table)! Unlimited selection of seafood, French Baguette, French Fries and Salad – as well as free flow house prosecco, wines, beers and soft drinks. This will be an informal and fun evening at Middle Island and is already selling out quickly, so please book early.

Some good news if you haven’t been lucky enough to secure a table at recent wine dinners is that we are working hard to bring a programme of additional wine themed dinners and other sporting and social events to keep you entertained in the months ahead as all predictions we are hearing are that options for overseas travel will be very limited this summer.

Finally, let’s not forget Father’s Day is on 21 June and you can celebrate the big day with a buffet lunch or dinner in the Bistro or a set lunch and set dinner the Compass Room. Either way will be a great way to spend with your family.

Preparations are well in hand for the Club’s Electoral General Meeting on 10 June. With the likelihood of social distancing measures still being in place, we will need to make use of additional rooms in the club to accommodate everyone safely. So please ensure to allow extra time to register and collect your ballot papers on the night. May I take this opportunity to thank the Commodore for his dedication and leadership of the Club over the past two years and to thank all those members of the committees who are stepping down for their contribution to the successful running of the Club, and to wish all the candidates standing for election, the very best of luck.

在其他活動方面，本月將舉辦多項適合年青人的藝術活動，無論是「自製 父親節禮物」、「即興藝術」或「彩繪帆布袋」，每項活動均令大家樂在 其中。成人不但可參與上述 活動，更可享用源源不絕的薄餅、啤酒及音 樂！詳情可翻閱內頁。

最後，請不要忘記6月21日是父親節。當日，你可以攜同家人蒞臨本會的 Bistro，享用午餐或晚餐自助餐，又或在 Compass Room 享用午餐或晚 餐套餐。任何一個方法都必定能讓你及家人留下歡樂時光。

6月11日我們將在 Compass Room 舉辦一場「庫克香檳晚宴」，庫克香檳 酒莊是首家，亦是唯一一家酒莊自1843年起製造顯赫的香檳。晚宴尚有 數星期才舉行，由於反應熱烈，預約名額已滿；但我們已計劃明年再度 舉行這場晚宴。另外，我們在8月28 於 Compass Room 再度舉辦「Dom Perignon 美酒晚宴」。這場晚宴於過往幾年廣受歡迎，今年載譽歸來， 大家萬勿錯過，盡快預約留座。

First Sailors Selected for RHKYC Team Agiplast In last month’s edition we shared the news that the Club has mounted a challenge for the Youth America’s Cup in the form of RHKYC Team Agiplast and we also shared the news of the appointment of renowned Head Coach, Chris Rashley.

This month we share more news! On Friday 8 May the Club announced that from a pool of 12 aspiring and talented young sailors, we had selected the first young men and women to join RHKYC Team Agiplast.

All 12 applicants were interviewed over the internet in late March where they were questioned about their sailing experience and their understanding of foiling boats.

From that process, nine candidates were selected to progress to the second step of the selection exercise; the physical assessment to determine their current levels of fitness and strength. This consisted of exercises which included pull ups, bench presses, shoulder presses, body weight squats and speed rowing over various distances on a Concept2 rowing machine.

The seven Hong Kong based candidates undertook the physical assessment over the Easter weekend involving various exercises, and the two overseas candidates also carried out the same exercises in their locations when restrictions allowed.

The first five sailors are Calum Gregor (age 21), Nicolai Jacobsen (age 17), Maria Cantero (age 22), Jackie Truhol (age 21) and Aymeric Gillard (age 23). Sailors must be over 18 by 1 November 2020 and under 25 by 12 March 2021.

The intention is that RHKYC Team Agiplast will ultimately comprise a final permanent crew of four (two male and two female sailors) and an extended crew one male and one female sailor. crew will be reviewed in September, giving Head Coach Chris Rashley time to consider the sailors’ performance in fitness and team building between now and then.

Hong Kong born Calum Gregor is a well known youth sailor in Hong Kong and has competed in over 30 international regattas and has foiling experience which is crucial. In recent years Calum was Under 17 World Champion and 3rd Overall at the 2015 420 Class World Championships, 6th Overall at the 2018 29er Class World Championships 2018 and 5th Overall at the 2019 Waszp class European Championships. Calum was awarded the Club’s Tom Larmour Award for Young Sailor of the Year in 2013 and the RHKYC Sharks Best Performance Award in 2014 and 2015.

Nicolai Jacobsen was the Waszp European Champion 2018 and in 2019 came 2nd in Foiling Week and 3rd Under 21 and 9th Overall at the International Waszp Games. He is currently ranked 9th on the Waszp SSL ranking.

Maria Cantero has been more recently coaching Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club’s Laser 4.7 and Radial youth sailors. Maria has vast international experience including being a member of the 49erFX Spanish Pre-Olympic Team for Rio 2016. Maria has competed in over 20 international events in 29ers, 29erXXs and 49er FXs. Amongst her many accolades are Bronze at the 49erFX Youth Worlds 2013 (Skipper), coming 7th at the 49er FX Junior Worlds 2014 (Skipper) and 5th Female at the 29er Worlds 2015 (Crew).

Jackie Truhol also has extensive international sailing experience and has come up through the Club’s youth sailing team, the Sharks Squad.

Jackie has trained and competed overseas since 2014, including in 13 countries during her gap year. She was 18th out of 65 at the 2017 European Radial Youth Girls Championships, 5th out of 15 at the 2017 Asian Sailing Federation Cup Women’s Radial and 3rd out of 18 at the 2017 Hong Kong Race Week Laser Radial Open. Jackie was awarded the Club’s Tom Larmour Award for Young Sailor of the Year in 2016.

Jacobsen, Nicolai As an aspiring youth hydrofoil sailor with a future aim to compete in the America’s Cup, I see the Youth America’s Cup as the ultimate stepping stone to initiate a career within professional sailing. The concept of fleet racing, match racing, and a high-performance foiling monohull creates a pathway that directly builds skills towards a future America’s Cup campaign. Additionally, being part of a structured campaign over time would develop valuable skills that are not only useful in sailing, but in any workplace.

Being part of RHKYC Team Agiplast, alongside world-class coaches and sailors, would give me an opportunity to learn from the very best in the sport of sailing. As a young sailor, this is be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me to be part of a highly professional sailing team, teaching me how to work alongside coaches and sailors to develop a race-winning team.

Additionally, preserving the health of the ocean is something I am infinitely passionate about. Thus, becoming an ambassador for Agiplast would give me the opportunity to make a change and promote sustainable recycling of plastics in the world of sailing and beyond.

winning the first international event he took part in at the 29er Worlds in Canada. Aymeric has experience in the Red Bull Foiling Generation, Moths and Waszps and has designed his own foiling craft. He was also a member of the Hong Kong 29er sailing team for three years and was also awarded the Club’s Tom Larmour Award for Young Sailor of the Year in 2012.

Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club’s Rear Commodore (Sailing) Lucy Sutro said “We were delighted to see individuals of such quality putting their names forward as candidates to join the RHKYC Team Agiplast, and enjoyed talking to every candidate through the interview process. The physical assessment was tough and gave the candidates an indication of the levels of strength and fitness that will be required to handle the AC9F foiling monohull which they will be competing in. The RHKYC is proud and thrilled to have youth members of such a high caliber joining the team.”

Training for the team has already begun. On 14 May, the Club announced a partnership with Hybrid MMA & Fitness, Hong Kong’s premier personal training, martial arts, kids training and group fitness facility which will be responsible for all the off water training for the team as they build their challenge for the Youth America’s Cup in 2021. VP of the Hybrid Group, Daniella Means said “it is our mission to motivate and inspire our community in making positive changes to their health and mental wellbeing. Our passion is in building meaningful long-term relationships to influence future generations– this is what makes us so excited to join hands with RHKYC Team Agiplast in Hong Kong’s inaugural participation in the Youth America’s Cup. The team will be working closely with HYBRID’s high performance nutrition, strength and conditioning coaches in preparation for the challenges ahead.”

By the time you read this, Head Coach Chris Rashley will have landed in Hong Kong from the UK, completed his 14-day quarantine and is now out on the water with our young sailors!

Cantero, Maria The America’s Cup is one of the biggest and most recognised events in the sailing world, where all the top sailors from a wide range of different Olympic disciplines race against each other. Therefore, being able to take part in the Youth version of it is clearly a step forward in every sailor’s career.

Having the opportunity to join RHKYC Team Agiplast which aims to fully dedicate their time to train and prepare for the Youth Americ’s Cup, represents a unique personal challenge to learn from the world’s best sailors, and embrace this enriching experience at its maximum level.

On the other hand, foiling boats are an ambitious discipline where speed, boat handling and tactics combine to deliver high-intensity racing. In my case, coming from a skiff sailing background; the possibility of sailing the AC9F, a 9m monohull foiling boat, in both fleet and match racing events, creates a demanding opportunity to race an innovative new-designed boat at its highest level.

Moreover, by being a high-performance sailor I have learnt that there is no secret behind the path to success and that anything can be achieved with motivation, dedication and hard work; values that RHKYC Team Agiplast aims to embrace and that I consider crucial for the success of the team and the challenge.

For all the reasons mentioned above, I believe that joining RHKYC Team Agiplast Youth America’s Cup Challenge is a once in a life opportunity and I am ready to meet all the expectations of the programme and make the most out it.

Gregor, Calum Having been born in Hong Kong and having represented the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club throughout my youth sailing at the highest level, I feel applying to be part of the RHKYC Team Agiplast Youth America’s Cup was a natural next step. This is a fantastic opportunity to learn what it takes to compete at the highest level of sailing, not only in competition but throughout the training programme as well. I believe that the lessons one learns from competing in a competition such as this has application in all aspects of life, not just sailing, and this competition is a huge opportunity for me to learn life lessons as well as learning from some of the best sailors and coaches in the world. Finally, I want to win, and to do so for the RHKYC would be more meaningful than for any other Club due to my representation of the Club over the past ten years and would feel like a culmination of the work put in by myself, the Club, and the coaches. Without the opportunities the Club has given me in the past I would not have been able to achieve what I have in sailing hence being able to represent the Club on one of the biggest stages in sailing means a lot to me.

Truhol, Jacqueline I wanted to join RHKYC Team Agiplast because it provides a fantastic opportunity to be a part of a new and exciting division in youth racing.

There aren’t many existing pathways for youth sailors in Hong Kong to compete in foiling boats, and fewer still in foiling yachts.

Having recently made the transition from single-handed dinghies to yacht racing, I find myself enjoying the camaraderie and teamwork involved. Being part of RHKYC Team Agiplast and competing in the Youth America’s Cup would not only be the perfect culmination of my racing experience and teamwork ability, but a stepping stone to the world of high-level sailing and a platform from which to continue developing youth sailing in Hong Kong.

Gillard, Aymeric I have been sailing almost all my life at Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club.

This is where i have learned to love sailing, where I have made some of my best friends and it also had an a great impact on my decision to study Maritime Engineering and the pursue of a career in this field.

The opportunity to join RHKYC Team Agiplast is incredible. From a young age I’ve always been motivated and determined to strive for the highest performance. Starting at the age of 6 in Optimists, to competing for Hong Kong in the 29er worlds no less than four times.

My depth and range with various aspects of the sailing world has provided me with experience that would be invaluable to most youth teams. As a watch captain during the RORC Myth of Malham I’ve learnt that having a committed role along with a sense of humor helps keep morale high even when the hardest conditions have been thrown at the crew.

Currently my experience as a Naval Architect would also provide the team with a deeper understanding of not only current foiling technology but also strategies and ideas from innovators not well known in the current industry. As a designer myself of a prototype foiling dinghy I have the technical knowledge which is crucial in knowing the limits of the craft and pushing the boat the extra mile, especially on the race course.

Finally, I hold a bachelors (Beng Yacht design and Production) accredited by the Royal Institute of Naval Architects and am a member whilst completing my Masters (Msc: Naval Architecture). However I am not a chartered engineer yet (i.e.: Naval Architect/Engineer). This will come after 5 years of professional experience.

This is a unique project never undertaken by the Club and the Youth America’s Cup offers an incredible opportunity for our young sailors and the Club and is an event that carries great global exposure. St. James’s Place Sunset Series The ever popular summer St. James’s Place Sunset Series will kick off on Friday 5 June. 12 races are scheduled throughout the summer months. The series is open to all and is a good excuse to start the weekend early, sailing with friends in a fun and relaxed event followed by prizegiving on the main lawn. The series is a tactical challenge on when to bag a race to improve your boat’s handicap. The race track is in front of the Club which makes it a great experience for spectators if you don’t wish to sail – warning signal is at 1740hrs – see you on 5 June for the first race.

Despite little on-the-water action in the past few weeks, with training sessions and races cancelled, the Rowing & Paddling section at least had one thing to cheer in April with the arrival of our latest OC-6 outrigger canoe. This canoe, the final one to be delivered to replace those canoes lost during Typhoon Mangkhut, will be called ‘Uhane, meaning ‘spirit of those no longer with us’.

Given the name of the latest addition to our family of canoes at Middle Island, it seems fitting to revisit an old Ahoy! Article from October 2006 when we celebrated the arrival of our first OC-6 at the Club, Lani Ani, unfortunately one of the canoes lost in 2018…

ome people celebrate the launch of a new vessel by popping a cork and breaking a magnum of champagne over the bow. Some roast a pig and burn joss sticks. And some throw salt and heave a sweet potato into the dark, briny sea. The last is the Polynesian way, seen at Middle Island on August 26 as the Yacht Club commissioned its latest and most unusual vessel, a Mirage OC-6 outrigger canoe named the “Lani Ani,” or Royal Wave in Hawaiian.

The Mirage design, by Outrigger Connection, is 45 ft. (13.71 m.) long, has a loaded waterline of 37 ft. 8 in. (11.48 m.) and weighs 341 lb. (155 kg.). For those new to the sport, the other thing to know is that the racing canoe has a single outrigger, or ama, to allow both speed and stability.

The term OC-6 indicates that the craft seats six people, the standard cruising model. Outriggers also come in configurations for one (OC-1) or two (OC-2) paddlers.

Outrigging is a new addition to activities of the Rowing Section, initially to be based at Middle Island, where the new OC-6 is stored. The Club has been fortunate to receive help from generous sponsors. Our thanks go to Swire Resources for sponsoring and managing the shipping and smooth delivery from its birthplace in Australia to Hong Kong. The Lani Ani is potentially the first of several craft that the Royal Hong Kong Outriggers – the new official team name – will acquire as the sport builds in popularity.

are expecting more than 30 crews representing Japan, Singapore, Australia, Guam, Palau, and Hong Kong. Day One is sprints (500 meters and 1500 meters) and Day Two will be a distance race, following a 16 kilometer course along the coast.

Team convener John McLennan designed Lani Ani’s elegant hull decoration, featuring symmetrical banks of waves in blue with yellow trim. A dozen or so participants conducted the blessing ceremony, with at least as many children, dogs and parents standing attendance. Mr. McLennan coordinated the protocol-rich, traditional ritual, which starts with placing the canoe on the beach with the manu ihu or nose facing the water and covering it with flower garlands, or leis. The ceremony included a group chant and the formal launch with six paddlers – all male according to tradition – consisting of Mr. McLennan and son Jamieson, Lorence Johnston and son Brandon, Brian Hitchcock and John Pache, steering.

There are many enthusiastic paddlers, or outriggers in the Club already, but the team is eager to grow and welcomes newcomers. The current schedule is for outings on Saturdays at 2:30, Sundays at 9:30, and Thursdays from 7:30, at Middle Island. Those who wish to join the roster should email outrigger@rhkyc.org.hk. The team is hoping to field its first competitive crew at the Micronesia Cup from October 21 to 22, in Saipan, east of the Philippines and north of Guam. The organizers

Paddle sports within the rowing and paddling section involves a variety of water sports; dragon boat (DB) and outrigger canoe (OC) which are the two main core sports. And now with the recent inclusion of stand up paddling (SUP) as an additional water activity for members and non members, one can experience any of the sports by signing up to an introduction course or development course relevant to that sport. Kayak Tours and Youth Paddle Camps are also run seasonally.

DB and OC have a mass of dedicated volunteer members, participants and committees members all pulling together to make it happen and to enable the continuous smooth running of both sports at the Club.

Each sport has one volunteer Club representative that is the key voice for each sport.

Gianni Aprea RHKYC Dragon Boat Volunteer Coordinator Introducing... Gianni (aka Johnny or G) Aprea; Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club’s dragon boat coordinator and Club representative since 2012.

To be a leader of a successful dragon boat team, Aprea works out a minimum of 5 days a week and sometimes twice a day during racing season. Cross training plays a huge part in Aprea’s fitness routine. His strength and endurance is ‘pushed to the max’ through running, weights and gym sessions, and of course paddling both dragon boat and outrigger. He is also the man responsible for the gruelling Monday night land training sessions on the roof at Kellett Island (open to members of the rowing and paddling section).

It is no surprise to those who know him that he hates losing and that is not a bad thing considering the team’s ongoing impressive results over the years. When I asked Aprea what his vision was for the team over the next few years he simply replied, ‘’my vision is for the program rather than the team.’’ Aprea expanded upon this to express a desire to introduce the sport to as many people as possible by hosting races and offering programs to kids, adults and charities.

Whilst Aprea may be a well known dragon boat paddler here in Hong Kong’s paddling community, who would know he is also a pretty good singer and (talented) acoustic guitar player?

Introducing... John (aka Squirrel) McLennan; Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club’s outrigger canoe coordinator and Club representative since 2017; first paddling dragon boat in 1989 and then outrigger canoe from 2002.

As one of the top male OC1 paddlers in Hong Kong, McLennan works out or paddles 6 days a week when fighting fit. He utilises a program specifically designed for outrigger canoe paddling such as technique drills, sprints and longer distance endurance pieces on the water.

His number of years paddling in Hong Kong and internationally has made him one of the most well known and interesting paddlers in these waters, therefore it is no surprise that McLennan’s vision for the sport is not dissimilar to Aprea’s. At the core of this is developing a youth program and introducing schools and the wider community to the sport. To build upon this he says he would like to continue, ‘’working with other clubs to make outrigger a Government recognised sport that is similar to rowing and dragon boat. Within the club and community, outrigger is still a little known sport and this needs to change and is changing with the introductory courses being offered by the club numerous times per year.’’

Growing an international reputation through events such as The Around the Island Race (ATIR) and representing the club in races in Hawaii, Tahiti, and Australia, etc. is equally at the forefront of McLennan’s epic dream for OC. For a man who loves to paddle miles offshore in the big deep blue sea it does seem a little crazy to discover that his greatest fears are ‘hulis’ and ‘sharks’!

Sustainable Shopping W O RD S: IA N BROW NL EE Chair Sustainable Development Committee

Sustainability Really Matters he Ship Shop is a treasure trove of all sorts of things related to boats, water sports and safety on the water. It is a great place to browse, and to check out the latest in Club branded clothing. It also has online shopping and the range is quite extensive.

The Sustainable Working Group (SWG) has begun to look at the procurement processes adopted by the Club to see how well it meets good sustainability practises. We started with David Ho and his team in the Ship Shop and had a fantastic exchange of ideas.

Sustainable Shopping does not only relate to the Ship Shop but also to you personally adopting a critical evaluation of the products and services you will buy anywhere. Consideration should be given to optimizing the benefits in terms of the general environment, social impact and cost, the marine environment where appropriate, and also of the general public good.

Some general guidelines you may find useful include: • The replacement of disposables with re-usables or recyclables.

• Avoid, and if not avoid, be able to recycle or compost packaging.

• Avoid single-use disposable items – such as plastic bottles and cutlery.

• Check the ability to recycle a product and its contents at the end of its useful life.

• To avoid or minimise the wastes (solid, liquid, gaseous) that are generated during the products useful life.

The SWG are preparing a set of guidelines and protocols which will incorporate these and other sustainable considerations into the procurement processes used by the Club.

Anchoring – Part 2 (first printed November 2006)

TIPS AND TRICKS

Anchoring Techiques and Tips WORDS: ROGER EASTHAM READY, GO, SET! Last month we examined issues of ground tackle and scope. This month we will look at a few anchoring techniques and tips to make life easier.

Once a location has been selected, and considerations of water depth, tidal range and current, wind direction and strength, bottom type, other moored boats and underwater hazards taken into account then one can start to prepare for anchoring.

It goes without saying that the four P’s definitely apply here. “Preparation Prevents Poor Performance” (Actually there are 5 P’s – but in deference to decorum I left one out!).

If attempting to anchor under sail, ensure that all halyards are ready to run, and that the crew has been clearly briefed on your plans. In any event, the anchor must be prepared, either on the bow roller or laid on deck with the warp and chain snaked out and free to run.

The conventional method is to slowly approach your selected spot from dead downwind with a crew member on the bow ready to let go. If the anchor is stowed on a bow roller then it can be semi deployed so that when the chain is released it will fall free.

It is important that the boat is close to stationary when the anchor hits the bottom, so the helmsman should judge when the boat has come to a halt – confirm they are happy with the location, and clearly hail “LET GO”. The foredeck hand should allow the anchor to free-fall fast until it is on the bottom. Once the anchor is on the bottom, the chain should be lightly held so that it does not all pile up on top of the anchor.

The helm can now give the boat a boost astern. Most boats normally kick to port or starboard when put astern. Do not try to counteract this tendency. As the boat moves astern the crew should allow the anchor line to pay out freely. Avoid going too hard astern. Normally a good kick astern and then back to neutral will give the boat sufficient momentum for the job.

When sufficient warp and chain has been paid out (scope of 5:1 is the norm) then the foredeck crew should start to gently brake the line. Do not lock off the anchor line immediately as this will tend to yank the anchor free, but rather try to decelerate the boat’s backward progress by incrementally increasing resistance on the anchor line.

By gently slowing the boat the energy from her backward motion is used to set the anchor. As the boat was allowed to veer off straight going astern this now works to your advantage, as a clear indication that the anchor has set is when the bow of the boat snaps round into line with the anchor warp. You can finally give an additional short burst astern to help dig the anchor in – but be careful not to give too much power otherwise you may easily pull the anchor out again.

If the boat continues to lie side on to the wind then the chances are that the anchor has not held.

Generally speaking if the anchor does not set first time you are better to raise the anchor – check that it has not been fouled by anything, and try again. Once the anchor is set – allow at least 5 minutes to monitor how the boat is swinging and to check if the anchor really is holding.

Fit a snubber An anchor snubber is a line that runs from the winch over the bow roller and down onto the chain. It is set so that the snubber takes the load of the anchor chain and adds a bit of stretch to the system. It also stops the sleep depriving noises of the chain working over the bow roller.

Lay a 2nd anchor If the weather looks bad, holding is poor, or you wish to limit the amount the boat swings, then a 2nd anchor can be carried out on a dinghy and laid. Generally this would be at around 30 to 45 degrees to the first anchor. The potential exists for the 2 anchor lines to twist as the boat swings but so long as one line can be disconnected on deck the untangling is not too difficult. A 2nd anchor can also be connected “in line” to the main anchor. This does complicate setting and weighing the anchors, but is a good solution if you find yourself say anchoring in soft mud with a general- purpose anchor. By connecting your reserve Danforth style anchor in front (below) your main anchor you will have a real “belt and braces” anchoring system.

Use an anchor rode weight Several companies sell weights that are specially designed to be lowered down an anchor rode once the anchor has been set.

This performs 2 basic functions. Firstly the weight increases the catenary on the rode – particularly useful if using a short chain with nylon rode.

Secondly the weight improves the angle of attack of the anchor rode connecting to the anchor, keeping the pull closer to parallel to the bottom.

Maintain a proper anchor watch It should go without saying, but more often than not problems arise because either no one is on board, or a proper watch is not being maintained. You discover too late that the boat is dragging, and by the time you react to the situation it may be too late.

Use a stern anchor (with caution) Generally a stern anchor (when used in conjunction with a main anchor set from the bow) is only suitable in light wind conditions. As the stern anchor prevents the boat from swinging, and also prevents the load on the anchor line from pulling “in line” to the anchor a stern anchor can often induce dragging.

Feel the force Once the boat is lying to anchor, just rest a hand on the anchor line when it is taut. If you can feel a series of jerks being transmitted through the line this may well indicate that the anchor is dragging or bouncing over the bottom.

Buoy the anchor If you are anchoring in foul ground or in a busy anchorage where there is a chance that anchor lines may become crossed you can tie a light a few feet longer than the water depth line to the anchor with a fender or small buoy on the end. The line should be secured to the crown of the anchor (OK with Bruce, CQR and Delta but not so easy for the Danforth type). This line can be used to recover the anchor in case it fouls.

Rita had been a member since 1997 and is survived by his loving husband, Eric.
