A Creative, Magical Summer at the Club
from Ahoy! June 2022
by Koko Mueller
In February, scientists from HKMEA came to the Club and placed four chains of oyster shells around the pontoons at Kellett Island. On April 2, the marine scientists returned to survey the shells and to document any marine biodiversity growing on the shells. It was certainly a very interesting experience, and it piqued my curiosity. I discovered new animals and creatures living in the oyster shells like shrimps, tunicates, tubeworms and more. My favorite animal

Now that summer is here, and restrictions are slowly easing, Kellett Diving Society together with Family Sub-Committee is planning a session in August to introduce children to the underwater world at the Kellett Island pool. Run by a professional PADI instructor, the excellent programs by the world’s leading diving agency, PADI, cater to children above the age of 8. “Bubblemakers” get a chance to: • Experience scuba diving under the direct care and supervision of a PADI Pro. • Take their first breaths underwater in water shallower than 2 metres/6 feet. • Learn about and use scuba diving equipment made for children – not adults. • Have lots of fun. discovered was the nudibranch (a shell-less sea slug). It was very small, gooey and very fragile, but it was also a very interesting experience picking it up. I also saw some eggs that have grown into the oysters. They were very clear and jelly-like. Overall, the experience was pretty cool, and it made me very happy. I cannot wait to see the oysters grow and live. Hopefully I can join the marine scientists again when they next visit to survey the shells.
