EDMOND DE ROTHSCHILD GROUP PROUD TO BE THE OFFICIAL WEALTH MANAGEMENT PARTNER OF THE ROYAL HONG KONG YACHT CLUB The Rothschild family has a remarkable history that dates back over 250 years and their association with competitive sailing, which began in 1876, is truly unique. For almost 140 years, « Gitana » has conjured up images of a line of boats, which tell of a family passion that has constantly been driven by a taste for excellence. The Rothschild’s are continuing a tradition based on expertise and innovation, performance and beauty, a history where each generation has left its own remarkable imprint. Baron Benjamin de Rothschild, Chairman of the Edmond de Rothschild Group, has inherited his family’s keen passion for the sport. Creating the Gitana Team in 2000, he transformed a family passion into a school of excellence and has been actively involved in their success ever since.

Sebastien Josse, skipper of the Multi70 Edmond de Rothschild Gitana XV, the latest in the Edmond de Rothschild Group’s dynasty of offshore trimaran racers and winner of the 2013 Transat Jacques Vabre competition, secured an impressive 3rd place in the 2014 Route du Rhum. The victory was widely hailed by his peers, given the boldness of his feat: striking out alone on the Atlantic against 30-metre and bigger trimaran maxis while skippering an offshore multihull equipped for the first time with T-foil rudders. Aided by this spirit of innovation and cutting-edge technology, the Gitana Team has now set a new challenge for itself: taking part in the next Vendée Globe competition, starting on 6 November, with a new Imoca-class boat.

Edmond de Rothschild Group is proud to be the Official Wealth Management Partner of the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club. Edmond de Rothschild Group has been named the title sponsor of both the Spring and Autumn Regattas as a new Regatta Series. Commodore’s Message Congratulations to all who took part in Hong Kong Race Week incorporating ASAF Youth Cup. We were delighted to have around 200 entries this year. There were almost as many volunteers on hand helping with the organisation, and it was pleasing to see that many of them were Club members.

The Bridge

Congratulations are also due to Ferdinand Heldman and nardo Giustiniani who fought a tough battle for the 29er Hong Kong National Championships on 24 and 25 January, coming a very close 2nd, and to Emma Fung who won the RS Feva Hong Kong National Championships, crewed by Lana Davies, over the same weekend.

Commodore Mark Whitehead

會長韋浩德

By the time you read this the Pedro Blanco Race will have started, we wish fair winds and good sailing to all competitors in this overnight race which is a great warm-up for the San Fernando Race. Later in the month we have the Class Regatta Port Shelter for one-design keelboats over the weekend of 7 and 8 March, followed the next weekend by the Inter-School Sailing Festival. At the time of writing we have 23 teams entering the latter, representing 14 different schools. The Big Boat Spring Cup is on 21 and 22 March, and the following weekend is of course Rugby Sevens. Then 1 April is the start of the San Fernando Race and I hope by now you all have your entries in – the deadline for late entries was 20 February! Prior to that, the San Fernando Charity Dinner will be held on Friday 13 March (article on page 18). It’s great to see the number of junior rowers increase month on month, I hope the forthcoming beginner courses encourage more juniors to get involved in the Stingrays squad. The race season is now under way for the seniors and I would like to wish them the best of luck. The Club’s 2015 Electoral General Meeting will take place on Tuesday 9 June at 1830hrs in the Compass Room. There are eight posts on General Committee for which elections are necessary – including Rear Commodore (Sailing), Rear Commodore (Club), Honorary Treasurer and Rowing Captain. I would like to invite our Life and Full Members to put forward for consideration by the Nominating Committee (of which I am the Chairman), the names of members who they think could be suitable for these positions, and who are either Life Members or who have been Full Members for at least two years, and I would be more than happy to receive your nominations before Tuesday 14 April by email to commodore@rhkyc.org.hk. I will see you at the Club or on the water.

General Manager’s Message I hope you all enjoyed the festivities over Chinese New Year and I am happy to say that the RHKYC Charity Foundation played host to 60 people from the Red Cross Hospital Schools and the Mission to Seaferers who came to the Club for the Lion Dance and Fireworks. I was sorry to miss them whilst I was down in New Zealand for the latest instalment of the ICOYC Commodores’ Forum, hosted by the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron.

It is with much sadness that we must report that after a prolonged battle with illness, long-term staff member Eddy Lee passed away peacefully on Sunday morning 1 February. Eddy had been a valued member of staff for over 23 years having started with the Club as a Barman in November 1991. He was promoted to Senior Barman in March 1995 and again to Bar Captain in April 2007. The Vigil service for Eddy was held on 28 February and the Club flag was also flown at half mast that same day. As mentioned in the Commodore’s message, Full and Life Members are invited to submit nominations to the Nominating Committee for eight posts on General Committee. Nomination forms are available on the members’ log-in section of the website, and these must be submitted by 14 April at the latest. General Manager Mark Bovaird

In September we held a ceilidh in the Compass Room which proved to be very popular, and a second one has now been organised for Saturday 21 March in honour of St Patrick’s Day which this year falls on Tuesday 17 March. Details are on page 30. I hope to see many of you there! On St Patrick’s Day itself, the Main Bar offers the usual St Patrick themed fare. If you don’t have tickets to the Rugby Sevens this year don’t despair – as usual, we will be showing the highlights in the Chart Room for the very keen fans at midnight on Friday 27 March, and then the games all day on the Saturday and Sunday. As you can see, despite the ongoing Kellett Island Development, the project is causing only minimal disruption and there is plenty still going on at the Club so we hope to see you down here as much as possible. Please remember also that all of the F&B facilities, particularly the Bistro, Compass Room and Main Bar, remain fully operational and the pool is back in operation on 1 March after its annual maintenance. The poolside in particular is a fantastic dining venue offering alfresco dining with wonderful views over the iconic Hong Kong Island skyline. On behalf of all the staff, I would like to offer sincere thanks to all members for their contributions to the Lai See fund which has been distributed to all staff. Members’ generosity through this annual tradition is always greatly appreciated. See you around the Club.

irst off; a big thank you to the Club for hosting the event and to our sponsors Central Oceans, Northrop & Johnson. There is nothing like starting the year with a bang! (crash and wallop)! For this year’s Hong Kong Dragon Championship, 14 boats lined up for a thrilling two-weekend regatta (17/18 and 24/25 January) at Middle Island. The Club kindly provided an awesome Race Committee;

so a big thanks to Inge Strompf-Jepsen, Sofia Mascia and Elberti Uiterwaal-Postma for handling blustery conditions and a constantly moving anchorage. You can guess from the opening lines that Lamma delivered on the weather with gusts of over 30kts on the first day. From the get go the racing was demanding on both helms and crews. There were decent rollers and plenty of surfing and although the overall event was to be dominated by two boats, plenty of people saw action and no one went home without feeling some sense of accomplishment, including Phyllis Chang gaining line honours

for the first race, after taking advantage of a spectacular and disorderedly leeward mark rounding by some people who should really know better! From Race 2 onwards, D55 Zephyr (Tam Nguyen and Graham Bailey) led

the mid-fleet racing was tight and aggressive despite the conditions. No quarter offered or given in these tricky conditions, and although the results show consistent positions for Phyllis Chang, Lowell Chang, Joseph Chu and Simon Chan, the racing was close and spirited to the line.

As morning dawned on the second Saturday of racing, Wind-guru was showing what looked like a re-run of the first weekend. Helms and crews braced for the worst; pairing their boats down to essentials so as to avoid the inevitable slop that occurs with kit in this situation. Racing was similar to the first Saturday; all boats were repaired and pared down and despite some unavoidable sail damage to D31 Nattigheid and poor Bram Van Olphen, most boats made it through the day with little damage. If we ignore the leaders who continued to fight it out,

Going into the again much quieter last day, D55 showed a narrow point margin with her discards. D1’s only chance for victory was to create some tactical advantage from the line and keep D55 in tow for the race. This however was to be D55’s regatta, Tam delivered consistent and workmanlike helming ably supported tactically by Graham Bailey from the Royal Yacht Squadron in Cowes. Mid-fleet racing again was aggressive and with Phyllis Chang and Lowell Chang delivering strong results.

the field with D1 Celines (Marc Castagnet) snapping at her heels. The first Saturday wasn’t all about just two boats though. As many of you know, Lamma is a demanding location, and with a constant breeze of over 20kts (gusting 35) with often a confusing sea state, boats and crew need to stay alert and prepared. Some seriously professional crewing was delivered across the whole fleet with a special mention to D47 Wudi (Frederic Azemard and Guillame Douin), who started racing Dragons two seasons ago, and proved that hard work and determination does deliver good results. No mention of heavy weather can be made without including the baritone that is Jozef Roels - well done to Jozef for explaining to everyone their rights and wrongs! Saturday also delivered breakages, with D12 Eaux Vives (Joseph Chu) suffering a broken mast and D51 Mei Fei (Karl Grebstad) suffering a broken Australian. Well done Joseph for repairing the mast and well done Karl and Nick for repairing Greg (sorry you couldn’t repair the jib car). from the first day’s action. Nothing could be more different on the water, with a warm 10kts NE breeze delivering an even course. Phyllis and Lowell Chang produced a family 1, 2 and the leading boats D55 and D1 extended their regatta points advantage, wrapping up the first weekend.

The prizegiving was held at Middle Island, with D55’s team taking the silverware home amid some wonderful prizes from our sponsors and Phyllis and Lowell Chang. Congratulations to the crew of Zephyr for a well-won regatta; well done Marc Castagnet for a deserved second place; and well done all competitors for making the event so memorable. A very special thank you to Virgile Bertrand and the crew of D41 Shiva, who continue to assist the incredible sailing charity Sailability and whose crew Mr. Foo Yuen Wai proved both resilient and professional in the face of such adverse situations (even straight after a 3km road race). A major thank you to Ah Wah without whom we could not continue, especially in heavy weather; and a final warm thank you to the Club, its staff at Middle Island and the brilliant Race Committee, to our sponsors and finally to our Class Captain Andreas Brechbuhl for producing yet another brilliant event. No Dragon Class event goes without something for luck, continuity and let’s face it our age! Thank you to Phyllis and Lowell Chang for providing the excellent Dom Perignon 1999, to toast the class, its members, our boats and Tin Hau.

n early January, 34 boats lined up for the Musto 2015 Etchells Australian Championship, the top regatta for the season and known locally as ‘the Nationals’. Hosted by the Royal South Australian Yacht Squadron (RSAYS), the series was sailed on the waters of the Gulf of St Vincent adjacent to Adelaide. The weather leading up and into the first part of the series was quite unsettled as a large tropical storm in northern Western Australia, combined with a low-pressure trough down south, created unseasonably heavy precipitation, low temperatures and very fickle winds. Eight races were scheduled for the series from Monday through to Friday with two races per day except for Wednesday and Friday.

After a successful Hong Kong Class Championships in November Hong Kong’s Mark Thornburrow, on Racer X (923), was looking forward to lining up against some of the top sailors in Australia. The team, comprised of Mark with Malcolm Page, Mike Huang, and their new main sheet trimmer Alex Gough, struggled a bit to find speed on the first day, which was sailed in 7 to 10kts from the south under cloudy skies. Tuesday arrived with winds of up to 30kts out of the southwest and a tide that was to turn against the wind. The fleet was postponed onshore until 1500hrs when PRO Stewart Ross called it for the day as the sea state was

Feature | It’s Tough at the Top – Report from the Etchells Australian Championship

After the unscheduled lay day, as well as the mid-regatta weigh-in on Wednesday morning, competitors were eager to get out on the water with winds of 15-20kts out of the southwest and lumpy seas for Day 3. For the first start of the day, (Race 3) the eagerness of the fleet translated into a General Recall and the Race Committee quickly decided to go straight to the Black Flag (BFD) to instill some discipline as the tide was helping to push the fleet over the line. The second start also ended up in a General Recall with the regatta leader at the time, Ray Smith on St John’s Dance, finding luck was not on his side and being called over early and given a BFD. The third start was clean with Course 2, a double windward / leeward finishing downwind. After a sluggish start on Day 1, Thornburrow and crew went back to the tuning guide sticking to basics and concentrated on in-boat communications to improve boat speed. They knew they were up against some of the top crews in Australia. The team rounded the top mark in eighth and progressively worked through the fleet to finish in second place. The SIs were amended to try to catch up on the number of races originally scheduled so a second race was added for the day. Race Four was a Course 1 which has an additional upwind leg on top of a double sausage. Thornburrow and team had a conservative first beat, rounding in seventh behind the lead pack, but gradually ground down the competition and sailed into the lead of the way up the final beat which about they held on to for the win, putting them into second place overall for the series. Luckily for Mark, the Adelaide fleet didn’t have the tradition of having the winner of the day buy drinks for all 34 teams! Thursday saw another two races scheduled with a drop kicking in after Race 5, which was expected to mix up the fleet at the top. Two races were completed in 10-18kts of breeze with wind still pushing against the tide, which resulted in a 1 to 1.5m chop. The Race Committee had to go to the Black Flag again but on this day the fleet behaved and no one was handed a BFD. Matt Chew and crew on GenXY (864) were the stand-out team on this day, winning both races and taking over the series lead on the penultimate day with Cameron Miles on The Hole Way (1306) just a point behind. Thornburrow and team had an

average day finishing in 8, 5 which put them in fifth place for the series (after the drop) behind John Bertrand on Triad (1383) and Noel Drennan on Baby Doll (1226). Friday began with a light northwesterly and flat water, which quickly turned glassy with the fleet drifting around for more than two hours until the sea breeze stabilised enough to permit a start. Two races were scheduled but it soon became clear that only one race was possible due to the time limit on the last day of racing. Course 2 was started in 6-8kts and flat water with pressure lines varying across the racetrack.

The left side of the course ended up paying and John Bertrand and crew led the fleet around the top mark extending his lead for the both the race and the series win as GenXY sailed their drop with a ninth. Thornburrow and team managed a respectable fifth in the last race, which cemented their fifth place overall in the series. Asked after the series how he enjoyed sailing in Australia, Thornburrow said, “Etchells are probably the best one-design keel boat in Australia, with great sailors in the class; if you want good close racing go down-under and join some of the regattas.” Let’s hope some of the Hong Kong fleet members do just that.

n 1977 the Club started the San Fernando Race which, for the first race, was from the Philippines to Hong Kong. In 1979 it was decided to race to the Philippines and since then the race has grown in stature. In 1987 the race Chairman, the legendary Vic Locke, was posted on a year’s teacher exchange to Australia (just in time for the America’s Cup) and Paul Dalton took over the reins in his absence. For a while there had been chat about giving something back to the community in San Fernando as they had always been fantastic hosts and it seemed rather ‘not the done thing’ to turn up with dozens of yachts, hundreds of sailors, get drunk and leave again a few days later. The initial thought was to help educate the children of the banker drivers… but this was quickly quashed by the banker drivers as they realised that if their kids went to school there would be no one to do the work. The search spread its wings and a home for under-privileged children, which had previously been looked after by the American Navy, was found. The home was found wanting and the Club’s sailors quickly rallied round. Over the years they assisted where they could until in 1997 a brand new kitchen was opened. Following this input increased and we saw fundraising dinners, charity bar nights and general shenanigans taking place to support the home which by now was growing from the 16 children there in 1997 to the 32 we look after today. Over the years various improvements have been made to the

18

living conditions the children have including a new roof, improved play areas and interior decoration. In 2002 it was decided to formalise things and the San Fernando Race Foundation was created. This allowed a more formal approach and the fundraising increased in pace. Rather than contribute where we were able to we took on a larger role and took over the maintenance of the home, plus the education and general well-being of the kids. Today we look after every need of the 32 youths in our care with the help of an amazing administrator who gives her time, on top of her job and her own family, entirely voluntarily. Theresa keeps a very close eye on the people there and applies a very strict programme to encourage all to work as a team and to work as hard as possible at school. This is paying dividends with extremely good results coming through and some of the children leaving college with qualifications they could only have dreamed of had the home not been open to them. None of this would have been possible without the support of the San Fernando Race and all involved with it. Next month we will look at some of the kids we have helped and hear some of their stories. We will also look at how we can continue helping them reach a few rungs up the ladder to give them the chance in life they would otherwise not have had.

Easter Sail Training

Feva and 29er Nationals Over the weekend of 24 and 25 January, 16 Sharks competed at the Feva and 29er Nationals. It was a windy weekend but a great experience. The Feva Championships were organised by the Aberdeen Boat Club and saw 11 teams take part. It was a chance for Optimist and Laser sailors to try their skills in a doublehanded dinghy. Communication and team work were new challenges not to mention the 20kts of wind on the first day. The Sharks were very competitive and managed to secure the top three places overall. Although we would like to have seen more spinnakers hoisted they did sail well in the strong wind conditions. Emma Fung and Lana Davies sailed an impressive series with four 1st places in the first four races and discarded a 3rd place to give them a comfortable lead.

Don’t forget to sign up for the Easter Youth Courses as members have priority when booking one month in advance. There are two weeks of courses and we also have an adult beginner course scheduled during the second Easter holiday week, ideal for those non-sailing parents to learn what all the fun is about! Contact us through the links above to find out more details.

1st Emma Fung and Lana Davies 2nd Thorwen Uiterwaal and Enzo Cremers 3rd Dolf Hendriksen and Matthew Clark 8th Abbey Hammond and Amy Hopkins 11th Ines Gillard and Oriane Voets At the same time the 29er Championships were being hosted by the Club and being raced in Stanley Bay where the breeze was consistently 18 to 22kts. Florrie Manzoni and Aymeric Gillard suffered some gear failure in the first race which forced them back to shore but they managed to make it back out for the fourth race of the day. Meanwhile Calum Gregor and Hugo Christensson were learning how to sail a 29er fast and although there was a bit of swimming they were getting some valuable points on the board. Meanwhile Ferdinand Heldman and Leo Giustiniani were putting their recent experience in Australia to good effect and scored two first and two seconds to lead after Day 1. The breeze dropped slightly for Day 2 and more boats were getting around the course providing some close racing. Florrie and Aymeric showed their potential by scoring a 3rd place in one race, while Calum and Hugo were consistent enough to secure 3rd place overall. For Ferdi and Leo it came down to the final race and unfortunately for them they finished 2nd behind Yann and Nathan from ABC.

Whilst everyone is to be commended for their mature racing attitude, there were some standout performances; Elliot Marples won the fastest time in the under 18 boys category, Katie De Vos won the under 17 girls category, Adrian Ting won the fastest time in the under 13 boys category, and William Marshall came 2nd in new year brought a new start for the Stingrays which saw them invited to take part in the Hong Kong Junior Squad time trials. With a new training regimen allowing up to five training sessions a week, the 2015 season kicked off with the first stage of the junior trials on Saturday 24 January in the form of a 2000m ergo test. The testing took place at the Sha Tin boathouse, where the Stingrays were divided into age groups and competed against rowers from around Hong Kong. For many of the Stingrays this competition was their first 2km ergo test and for the less experienced members of the group, the excitement and adrenaline made pacing the race a challenge. All rowers started well and showcased their strength and determination – showing great promise for the future. For some, the strong start was not sustainable but many Stingrays nonetheless achieved personal bests and came away excited for the next round of competition. Adrian Ting described his experience by saying, “I thought it was good fun and I was really pleased with my time. It was a great experience, even though it was painful’ next time I am aiming for a 7:55.0.” With a few more 2km tests under his belt, and knowing how to handle the middle 1,000m, Adrian will be pushing fantastic times.

the under 19 boys category and won the record for the fastest time performed by the Stingrays. There will be six time trials held throughout the year, with tests taking place both on the water and ergo. Regular updates of times and performances will be published in Ahoy!.

We are offering two courses over Easter; course 1 from Monday 30 March to Saturday 4 April and course 2 from Monday 6 to Saturday 11 April. Each course runs Monday to Friday from 1000hrs to 1500hrs and on the Saturday from 0800hrs to 1000hrs.

Last year’s courses were a great success, minus the rain in week 1, with over 25 students participating over the two weeks. There were multiple opportunities to try out singles, doubles and quads as well as the odd bit of sweep rowing in fours. Many of last year’s beginners have gone on to join the Club’s Stingrays squad and now train up to five times per week as well as competing both

locally and internationally. Tabitha Boyton (Tabby), who attended camp during her break from English boarding school Cheltenham Ladies said, “I wanted to try another sport and learn how to row. The Easter rowing camp was a great opportunity to meet others and learn the basic skills. Sarah, Hannah and Toby shared their passion for the sport and that was really where it all started. After almost a year of rowing I will compete in the finals of the British Youth Indoor Rowing Trials, this will be a very exciting time after training hard with endless rowing and intensive circuits. My aspirations are to get into the GB Youth Team and row for my country.” Tabby continues to row with the Club during her school holidays but I am delighted to be kept updated with her rowing in the United Kingdom. Being selected to attend the British Indoor Rowing Final Trial is a wonderful achievement in itself and the trial will set her up ready for the GB Junior trials in 2016. Having coached Tabby during her trips to Hong Kong I have noticed her passion and technique continue to improve, I am delighted she has continued her rowing while in the UK and would like to wish her all the best at the forthcoming trials. If you are looking for a new sport, or have watched rowing on TV, now is the perfect opportunity to give it a try.

Division 10 This year we have two teams playing in Division 10 which is working extremely well for the après squash. The A team is currently sitting 3rd behind Head Advance 8 and HKFC 10. The top two teams get a trophy and there are still six games remaining so we have time to get into a trophy-winning position. The B team has slipped down to 7th and bottom position after having had a bad run Sander, Angelo and Angus with injuries. Masters 2 The Masters 2 team continues to battle manfully against strong opposition. Most of our opponents play Div 6 in the main league while most of us play Div 10. We managed to have a good win against Jaws, our old foes from M3. Bruno Van Der Schueren and Andrew Sullivan both got 3-0 wins while Sander Holman had a nail biting 3-2 win to seal the points. At the moment we are locked in a battle with Titlows to avoid the wooden spoon and we play them next.

Internal League With the Winter league in full force in January there weren’t too many matches played in the boxes last month. Bruno Van Der Schueren finished top of box A with 17 points (and played all his matches) with Andrew Sullivan second with 12.

Marine Update W ords: J oe Goddard

Hardstanding Machinery at Kellett Island

The Travel Lift piers are well underway and will be operational by late March. Our piers (and Travel Lift) have a wider span, enough in fact to lift the latest Volvo 65 yachts.

Marine

The first welcome change is the addition of our new Marine Travel Lift, already in use prior to the pier’s completion. The Wise 50ton machine’s first job was to lift Frank Pong’s pocket maxi Jelik to install a revised keel.

New Mooring Arrangements at Kellett Island After a huge amount of activity in the typhoon basin, we are now seeing a small recovery towards the mooring plan proposed a few years ago. The Wan Chai Bypass tunnel works are now located further into the typhoon shelter and dredging of the water directly adjacent to the hardstanding is being completed in order to provide 4.5m water depth at low tide.

The basic shape of the new marina pontoons are shown below, the blue hatched area:

Looking from a tall building members will see the large triangle-shaped reclamation at the Police Officers Club. This triangle will be a busy worksite over the next couple of years as further cutting and drilling commence for the Shatin Link tunnel. Although most of the work done by the authorities to date has been ‘cut and cover’, the new contractors have elected to use a submerged tunnel to connect the causeway through the breakwater and the tunnel from Kowloon side. The submerged tunnel is a prebuilt concrete rectangular section cast on Hong Kong island and sunk into place. Fortunately this type of tunnel will not cause much disruption to navigation traffic from our Clubhouse to the harbour but there will be a couple more shifts of the mooring plan. The next layout of moorings will be available by Easter 2015 and look similar to the plan above.

Middle Island Ferry The existing north end of the concrete pontoons will be relocated to the southern end in order to facilitate easier navigation in from the breakwater. The new concrete pontoons designed and built by Marine Tek of Finland will provide the walkways and extra pontoon space we look forward to. Marine Tek have designed a stable and wide platform that runs around and inside the piers and back towards the Jardine steps, an extra length of over 100 metres. Members will be able to access the new pontoons by walking underneath the piers or via a ladder from the hardstanding at very high tides.

Marine and Boatyard

Both Marcom and Sailcom have been researching the need to improve sampan capacity at Middle Island. The activities on the island are on a consistent rise due to the demand for sailing tuition, race coaching, rowing classes and paddling activities. The island which once had a sleepy feel is becoming a busy hub with plenty of member use. A large sampan is still the desired design, large and maneuoverable, easy to board with low running costs. Existing sampans have been given a new lease of life with new economical power 4-stroke motors. MARCH 2015 AHOY! |

Obituary Dennis W Parsons – 1935 to 2015 Dennis passed away on Monday 12 January in King George Hospital, London. He had broken his hip before Christmas and then he caught pneumonia in hospital. He had been a member of the Club since 1975, mainly sailing from Shelter Cove, latterly living aboard the Nantucket Pelican (originally Elica) in the Causeway Bay Typhoon Shelter; he sailed his last boat in Hong Kong, the black-hulled Cape North Lady Jim, to Malta in the late 1980s. In the 1990s he lived on his boat in Cyprus (Larnaca Marina) and then sailed her to Turkey (Finike) in the late 1990s. Dennis never married and is survived by a brother. His funeral was held at Chelmsford Crematorium on Wednesday 4 February. Ernest Tang – 1929 to 2015 Ernest passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on 2 February at the age of 85. He had been a devoted member of the Club since 1971. He loved the sea and his cherished motor yacht Yobo. His philanthropic nature inspired him to spend 20 years building and maintaining a pier with his own hands for the local fishermen on a small island off Tung Lung Chau. In his latter years you would frequently see him by the poolside swimming, sunbathing and enjoying his ice-cream and Gunner! His final wishes were to have some of his ashes scattered into the sea.
