Commodore’s Message A very busy month has gone with Chinese New Year celebration and our Asian renowned Hong Kong Race week, a week-long sailing competition with 245 entries from 10 nations. My heart-felt thanks to over 130 volunteers that contributed their personal time and a job well done to all. The Club cannot hold this event without its members support. I hope to see more of your support on next year to make this significant event step up into the next level. A full report will appear in the April’s Ahoy.

The Bridge

This month, I am also looking forward to the Boase Cohen & Collins Inter-School Sailing Festival scheduled on the 9 to 10 March. This takes place on the water, right between Middle Island Clubhouse and opposite the Seaview Promenade offering those involved a great sailing challenge and spectators a great-friendly sailing event, with live commentary and music to spice up the scene providing a great weekend for all. I hope to see many of you at the event.

Commodore John Woo

會長胡祖榮

For our young sailors, seven of our Shark Optimist sailors will be traveling to Singapore this month to take part in the Youth Team Racing and Youth Sailing Championship, we look forward to hearing their report covering the event in the coming Ahoy. In the Rowing and Paddle Sports Section, our junior rowers are competing now at the Middle Island Rowing Race Series 2 to 3 March. The following weekend, both our senior and junior rowers will compete at the Hong Kong Indoor Rowing Championships, this is a grueling 2000m race. Last, Sunday the 17 March, our rowers will participate for the third year in the Club organised event, the Harbour Regatta which will take place at Kellet Island. The event will host coastal rowers from many of the Hong Kong and regional rowing clubs, all rowers will compete head-to-head over a 600m race course in Victoria Harbour. I would like to invite all members to come down and spectate this special event in the harbour. I wish all of our rowers the best of luck when competing at these events. Please make a note that the Club’s 2019 Electoral General Meeting will take place on Wednesday, 12 June at 1830hrs in the Compass Room. There are seven posts on General Committee for which elections are necessary – including Rear Commodore (Sailing), Rear Commodore (Club), Honorary Treasurer and Rowing Captain. General Manager’s Message How quickly is this year flying by? No sooner had we had the fabulous Fireworks and Lion Dance of the Lunar New Year celebrations than we had all the excitement of the Club’s signature dinghy racing event, Honk Kong Race Week. Congratulations to all of the sailors from Hong Kong and around the world for making the racing so exciting and once again showcasing just how spectacular sailing in Hong Kong can be.

General Manager Mark Bovaird

總經理布馬克

The Club’s bowling league which has been in hibernation for some four years is going to be making a comeback. Simon Boyde, Bowling Convenor, will be contacting all the past bowling team captains to reform their teams and looking for other new teams to get involved. Why not get your family or boat crew involved? A full programme of matches will start in September, but now’s the time to get practising on Hong Kong’s newest Bowling Alley. March is a month of two American Wine Dinners. For the first, on 7 March, we bring you the KendallJackson Wine Dinner. Hear about how a pear and walnut orchard was converted into a winery that very quickly began winning awards and producing the top selling Chardonnay in the United States. See page 31 and 33. The second takes place on the 28 March, when we are hosting the Beaulieu Vineyard Wine Dinner. The Beaulieu Vineyard very cleverly stayed in business during the Prohibition Era by selling its wines to the Catholic Church! Learn more about the history of Beaulieu Vineyard, how it got its name, and how it has introduced the latest technologies, in combination with time-honoured traditions, to produce its world renowned Cabernet Sauvignon. With the weather warming up with the arrival of spring, live music returns to the Main Deck on Thursday evenings with Wendy Robin and the Cruisers and on Friday evenings with our resident DJ. I look forward to seeing you all at the club and trust you will enjoy making the most of the new Sports Bar and Bowling Alley.

The Bridge n Wed 6 February, the RHKYC Charity Foundation invited 160 guests from the Hong Kong PHAB Association, Hong Kong Red Cross Hospital School, Hong Kong Red Cross John F. Kennedy Centre, Little Life Warrior Society and Community Development Matching Fund to celebrate the Chinese New Year. The charity groups were greeted by our Rear Commodore (Club) Adrian Pang, Chairman of Kellett Island SubCommittee Joseph Chu, and Chairman of the RHKYC Charity Foundation Ambrose Lo. Our guests, especially the children were so excited to visit the Boatyard and have a taste of being a sailor on our members’ boats. They all had a great time at the Poolside buffet, with the visit of the Choi Sun, the God of Fortune, and the lively Dancing Lion. Last but not least, the lovely evening was finished by the spectacular fireworks and everyone brought home the blessings of the Spring Festival.

“Not a lot, but enough…” The Hong Kong Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve Memorial Vase pursuit race is the penultimate event of the Top Dog Trophy Series. Just to be clear. There’s the BuyAssociation Lipton Trophy, the Turkish Airlines Around the Island Race, the BuyAssociation HKRNVR Memorial Vase and the BuyAssociation Tomes Cup in the series which races absolutely everybody from the venerable Pandoras to a foiling Phantom catamaran off the same start line – albeit at different times. Fastest boats start last, and the idea is that everyone finishes together in a huge lump that gives the Race Officer indigestion and makes him swear that he’ll never do this again. This time the RO was Anthony Root who has been spotted understudying the Club’s PR (Pursuit Race) Maestro, Gareth Williams, for a couple of

Memorial Vase 2019 events now. Prescriptions of the HKRNVR Memorial Vase require that the race course includes a foray into “the waters formerly patrolled by the HKRNVR”, which means that the racing fleet is obliged to sail out beyond the Lei Yue Mun gap into the eastern approaches, something that causes much trepidation among some of our smaller class boats. TCS4, just 1.7nm outside the Lei Yue Mun narrows, is the first turning mark beyond the Harbour marked on Club courses, so that’s where they went. There was workable breeze for the start – all the starts – over towards the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal. 6-8 knots from the southeast, and a flooding tide. Almost every boat of every class stayed over on the left side of the course, beating along the Kowloon shore and staying as far away as possible from the incoming water in the middle. Cha Kwo Ling and Yau Tong have rarely seen so many sailing visitors, and the fishermen on the green light beacon at Lei Yue Mun had the best view of all. MARCH 2019 AHOY! |

13

Feature | BuyAssociation HKRNVR Memorial Vase 2019 First boat rounding TCS4 was Tom Ho’s Pandora, Windfall. Current on the mark caught the best many boats unawares, and it was strengthening as the afternoon progressed. At the same time, this was the weakest breeze on the race course… not a lot, but just enough, and then it was a run with the tide back into the Harbour, heading for TKS and then Gate Buoy, and laps of sausages while the clock ticked towards the 1630hrs target finish time. The fleet gradually bunched up in the approved fashion, and just 30 seconds remaining, Frank van Kempen (King of the Pin, Etchells) ghosted into shot at the pin end of the line to steal the gunsmoke from Warwick Simons (Forty Forte, Flying 15) by a mere 15 seconds. This was not the best day for the back starters playing catch-up. First Big Boat home was Ambush, the Isler / Taylor combo boat, in 27th place. First five finishers were: 1. King of the Pin, Etchells, Frank van Kempen 2. Forty Forte, Flying 15, Warwick Simons 3. Impala 1, Impala, Mike Burrell and Gaston Chan 4. Reprobate, Etchells, Peter Backe 5. Prohibited Areas some eleven boats were disqualified for being on the wrong side of a TSS during November’s Around the Island Race.

His words were prophetic and for several years, the Club was not allowed to run the race around Hong Kong Island. Another type of Prohibited Area are the Temporary Marine Works Areas. These are described in Marine Department Notices (which can be found in the course room at Kellett Island and on the RHKYC website) and are marked by can buoys, usually yellow or as rusty orange in colour. Our sailing instructions define these as prohibited areas at all times while afloat, not just during the race itself. Finally, our sailing instructions define Moving Prohibited Areas around commercial vessels underway, or vessels that are towing. You are putting yourself and your crew in danger if you ignore this one! All racing in Hong Kong must be covered by a race permit, issued by the Marine Department. These permits define where and when we can race and often come with stipulations (for example, a compulsory competitors’ briefing for ATIR). here are several types of ‘prohibited areas’ that affect us when we sail or race around the waters of Hong Kong. Sailing is a sport that relies on the competitors to ‘self-police’ themselves. How honest a competitor are you?

As with much in sailing, it is down to each competitor to police themselves – it is vital that we do this to continue to be allowed to share these busy waters.

There are several areas where entry is prohibited by law in Hong Kong. For example, you cannot sail within 100m of Green Island or Waglan Island, nor within the Macau Ferry Terminal area. Of more importance to those racing in the harbour is the Kai Tak Cruise Ship Terminal Permanent Prohibited Area, covered by the Marine Department Notice No 106 of 2016 and section 9 of the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal Ordinance (Cap. 627). This covers an area of water extending out 100m from the terminal. This piece of water often comes into play for harbour races – it’s very tempting to try to escape from the effects of a flood tide up against the former airport. However, you will be not only falling foul of our Standard Sailing Instructions by sailing through this area, but you will also be breaking the law! Because this is a working area with large ships manoeuvring alongside the terminal, we can’t lay buoys to mark this prohibited area. Our Standard Sailing Instructions, echoing Marine Department guidelines, also prohibit sailing within 100m of any commercial pier in the harbour. Sailing Instructions for races that go outside the harbour, such as our offshore races and the Around the Island Race define additional prohibited areas that forbid sailing into the wrong side of Traffic Separation Schemes. Despite a compulsory briefing for all competitors,

Sailing

In 1987, the Commodore, Jerry Philips, in his letter in Ahoy! “The Thomas Cooks Travellers Cheques Round the Island Race attracted about 200 entries and other than for a large hole at Green Island, which caught the later starters, was uneventful as far as yotties are concerned. However some yachts sailed on the wrong side of the traffic separation scheme, some too close to ferry piers and others in prohibited areas. If people persist in this behavior do not be surprised if the Marine Police and Marine Dept. start handing out summonses and putting restrictions on our racing.”

HISTORY OF THE TOMES CUP This trophy has an interesting history. It was presented to the Club in 1969 by Mr. Alec Tomes whose father was one of the founders of Shewan Tomes & Co., a well-known local Hong Kong firm. The Cup was presented in the memory of Mrs. Dora Delano Forbes who was Mr. Tomes’ godmother and also an aunt of US President, Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Originally, the Cup was donated by the Hong Kong Sugar Refiners in 1880 and was won on 1 April that year by Dora’s husband, Mr. William Howell Forbes sailing his boat Naomi. It then passed into the possession of the Forbes family whose family business of W.H. Russell and Company was a wellknown Canton trading house founded in 1830 and subsequently found its way into the possession of the Tomes family. The Cup was renamed the Tomes Cup by Noel Croucher (1891-1980) who was a stalwart of the Club and served as Commodore from 1941 to 1949.

Etchells Worlds 2018, in Racer Colin W O RD S: M A RK T H O RNBURROW | PH OTO S:

K Y LIE WIL S O N

Sailing he 2018 Etchells World Championship were hosted by the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron in the Brisbane suburb of Manly, and this year’s fleet was one of the largest on record with 94 boats competing on the waters of Moreton Bay.

was the first time we sailed with Will and he turned out to be a truly fantastic all-around sailor, with excellent tactics and a super natural feel for relative boat speed and boat angles in the Etchells. Best of all, he was a joy to sail with.

This year was also a special year for the class as it celebrated its 50 th year since Skip Etchells designed the E22 back in the 1960’s.

We learned many years ago that it is extremely tough to compete at the top level at the Etchells Worlds and that doing well takes practice and persistence. We have been very fortunate to have Malcolm Page sailing with us during the past four Worlds starting with Newport in

Hong Kong sported a strong contingent of 5 boats traveling down to compete at the Worlds this year. In addition to our team, there were four other teams led by Marty Kaye/Marco Pocci, James Badenach, Greg Farrell, and Charlie Manzoni. All in all, a strong showing for HKG as the third largest nationality behind AUS and USA (ahead of GBR, NZL, BER and the lone boat from NGR, which was crewed by our very own Laurence Mead). Our team this year consisted of regular crew member Mike Huang, who sails with me in HK and has competed with me in four World Championships, Alex Conway, who raced with us in the 2017 European Champions (his first Etchells regatta, which we won, so he now has a 1st and 2nd to his name, probably the best record for anyone racing Etchells today!), and Will Ryan, who is the current 470 Olympic Silver Medalist and partner of Matt Belcher in the 470 on the Australian National team. 2014. Although we did not do well at Newport, we improved during the Hong Kong Worlds in 2015, but we struggled to sail fast in lighter winds under 13 knots. By 2016, we had honed in on the right sail inventory and we managed a 5th place in the Worlds at Cowes and another 5th at the 2017 Worlds in San Francisco. Our persistence was slowly beginning to pay off. Unfortunately, Malcolm could not sail with us in 2018 due to work commitments (he is now the Olympic Sailing Director for US Sailing), but he connected us with his successor on

Sailing

the Australian Sailing Team, Will Ryan. We all went sailing together for the first time the day before the start of the pre-Worlds, the Queensland States Championships. This was a great warm up series for us and we focused on our teamwork and boat handling, and even managed to get the dreaded Black Flag out of our system ahead of the Worlds! We then had five more days of practice before the start of the Worlds, and we put in long 8+ hour days on the water. We needed this time to gel as a crew and to select the right sails for the expected conditions, which is critical in an Etchells. Towards the end of the practice week, our boat speed was coming along well, but you never really know until you start the first race. During the regatta, our goal was to be one of the first boats out on the racecourse each day – thanks to our excellent coach Larry Cargill. This allowed us to spend at least a full hour tuning with our tuning partner, Greg Farrell and crew, and observing how the wind behaved during this time. This was a critical part of our pre-race routine and helped us make sure that we set Racer Colin up for the right wind and sea conditions, so that we could come off the line at full speed and have the ability to hold our lane or roll those around us, as needed. The breeze during the regatta turned was lighter than expected, putting more emphasis on tactics and figuring out the currents. Amazingly, after four races, we were leading the regatta – thanks to our consistency (we had not been out of the top ten up to that point). We placed 18th, 5th and 22nd in the next three races, be we remained in the top three since those around us (Martin Hill, Matt Chew, John Bertrand) also had mediocre results. We were still in the hunt. The eighth race would prove to be an emotional roller coaster. The wind had been forecasted to shift as a front came through, and it did veer on the first run. We were on the left side of the course and on the outside of the shift, but we cut our losses and got ourselves to the right to round around the right hand leeward gate mark. The breeze filled in just as we rounded and we ended up crossing the shortened finished line in fourth place, with none of our near competitors in the top 30! Just as we were realizing it would now be hard for us not to win the Worlds, the race committee abandoned the race – even though eight boats had. A number of protests were filed, led by the top USA teams, and hearings went late into the night to reinstate the race. But all protests were dismissed by the next morning. The race abandonment stood, so we still had two races to go.

The next and final day saw Martin Hill take the win for Race 8, sealing first place. We finished 4th, while Matt Chew got a 20 th. The battle for second place would be down to the last race. We had 9 points on Matt going into the last race and Matt finished third while we finished 10 th, to hold onto second overall. Needless to say, we were a happy crew! By the end of the Worlds, our whole team was working together really well. Next year, we will

aim to start the Worlds with a crew working this well! It was also fantastic to have such a strong contingent of five Hong Kong teams at the Worlds as we were able to support one another through the regattas ups and downs and share insights and experiences on a daily basis. Our longtime coach Colin Smith’s last words to me were, “You can win the Worlds Mark!” Colin is normally right, so we will have to keep trying!

The long keel and complicated cockpit is classic design of Dragon, and some new models are designed to have different options for launching the spinnaker. The class rules keep the boat in its elegant design with simple material. Carbon fibre mast and high tech sails are not introduced in the class so that sailors develop skills without use of technology.

Dragon Class Open Day Young Blood infuses with timeless beauty of the Dragon W O RD S: KEN W O N G | PH OTO S: SID NE Y TA N G

ne fine late December afternoon, 10 Dragons were waiting at the pontoon for ‘old’ young members from the Club to start a magical journey with ‘new’new young members. We started our introduction with a brief history of the Dragon which dates back to 1929, when the first Dragon was born. The Dragon was originally designed by Norwegian sailor, Johan Anker, for cruising around the Norwegian fjords in 1920s. Not long after, sailors realised the Dragon’s design was as aestheticaly beautiful as she is smooth and powerful when sailing and racing. She became world class in 1948. World class racing events

for amateurs as well and professionals are organised yearly in many beautiful places around the world. After history briefing, our fellow class members, Peter Baer, Andreas Brechbühl and Roberto Marinelli introduced the Asia Pacific Interport (API), a team racing event between several yacht clubs on the Pacific rim. In 2017, RHKYC hosted the event and raced against several international clubs like the Kansai Yacht Club (KYC), Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron (RSYS) and Royal Vancouver Yacht Club (RVYC). Through inter-club racing events and the International Dragon Association (IDA), our

We felt it was most fitting to let young members sail the boats for fun to familiarise themselves to the Dragon. The new members helped to rig the boats and we set sail to Deep Water Bay. Sailing conditions were not very challenging with wind fluttering between 5 to 8kts and oscillating between 330 to 030. It turned out to be a perfect setting for a trial run. The race was set on an island course, circling Round Island (Ngan Chau) twice on port rounding. It gave the newbies plenty of opportunities to practice hoisting and dropping the spinnaker while tacking and jibing around the island. There was a lot of action, packed with fun although we mercifully spared the young members from practicing manoverboard. Roberto Marinelli led the group on D12, finishing first in the fun race. We suspect Roberto had motivated his crews with the promise of beers on the pontoon judging from how fast they sailed after the finish line. After we tied down the boats, we had a short de-briefing and presented a gift to the winning team. The day was concluded with lots of laughs and hugs and we sincerely hope new blood will join and learn to love Dragon sailing as much as all of us do!

ack in October during the dinner celebrating the Hong Kong Rowing Championships, representatives from three historic Asian rowing clubs proposed an annual race between them, to strengthen friendship and promote rowing in Asia.

score points for the overall team standings. All boat types were represented, although strong monsoon winds presented challenging crosswind conditions, especially the singles and sweep crews.

The 3-Way Regatta was born, with the first installment scheduled for 26 and 27 January on the Pandan Reservoir in Singapore. The race was to be hosted by Easter Rowing Club (ERC), a relatively new rowing club doing a great job of growing the rowing scene in the country.

The conditions favoured the strong ERC crews, experienced with the winds, but RHKYC gained wins in Women’s 2x, Masters 1x, Open 2-, Open 2x, Open 8+, junior 4x and 2x. David Kim won junior rower of the competition and Ben Rowe accidentally won adult rower of the competition along with Felix from ERC.

Of the total 68 athletes racing in the event, RHKYC was represented by 18 adult rowers and 13 youth rowers, who were all keen to chalk up the first wins in the annual event and

Saturday night’s team dinner was held at the Republic of Singapore Yacht Club, with good food, drink and more competition, ably compèred by Guy Parsonage.

Sunday saw the city sprint regatta racing over 350m. Hot and heavy racing gave the juniors a chance to pack in several more races against their ERC competitors. There was also a sprint showdown between ERC and RHKYC men’s 8+’s, the result of which was a photo finish. Alas, absence of a finish camera resulted in an inconclusive result, with promises from both sides to make it more decisive in future. We look forward in anticipation to the second 3-Way Regatta in Shanghai in 2020. If you are interested in learning to row or would like to rediscover your passion for rowing, please contact the Rowing Manager (rowing.manager@rhkyc.org.hk) for details on upcoming courses.

arine and Boatyard are both located at Kellett Island but they are two different departments; each with their own specific role to play in the Club. Marine is headed by Alan Reid assisted by Joanne Ho. Boatyard is headed by Matthew Morgan who is assisted by Connie Chan. To assist members we would like to differentiate between these two departments so that Members may send their enquiries to the correct department and not be disappointed should their enquiries not be answered correctly. The most common confusion arises when Boatyard is asked to launch a boat and Marine is asked to conduct repair work on a member’s craft. Marine are in charge of the Club moorings, hard standings, the marina at Shelter Cove, Club sampans and committee and mark laying vessels. Marine should be contacted for the launching of class vessels at all three locations. Members who wish their boat to be launched for racing or cruising should contact Marine. Members who have signed on to the Top Yacht system for a particular race, before 0900hrs on the day preceding the race, will automatically have their vessel launched. Members who sign on after this time should send an email to Marine, call Marine on 2339 0309/8 or call the Boat Handlers on 9123 0581 for launching at Kellett Island. Kendall-Jackson Wine Dinner Compass Room | Thursday 7 March The Kendall-Jackson wine business started with the family’s 1974 purchase of an 80-acre pear and walnut orchard in Lakeport, California that Jess Jackson converted to a vineyard. In 1982, Jackson produced his first bottle of wine under the Kendall-Jackson label. This decidedly unique Chardonnay was an instant hit with consumers. In 1983 the wine won the first double Platinum Award ever presented by the American Wine Competition. Kendall-Jackson was officially on the map. In 1992, Kendall-Jackson Vintner’s Reserve Chardonnay becomes the top selling Chardonnay in the USA, and remains so to this day.

Beaulieu Vineyard Wine Dinner Compass Room | Thursday 28 March — “Beau lieu” — A Beautiful Story about a Beautiful Place

De Latour quickly made a name for himself by importing Phylloxera-resistant rootstock from Europe to the recentlyravaged fledgling California wine industry. When prohibition hit and most wineries shuttered, Beaulieu Vineyard increased its business by fourfold by selling sacramental wine to the Catholic Church. After the repeal in 1933, Georges de Latour became dedicated to the research and innovation that would bring about his Rutherford Estate’s finest expression. In 1938, he traveled to France and met André Tchelistcheff, famed viticulturist and enologist who instituted the philosophy of continuous innovation in vineyard and winery to which we remain dedicated today. When he joined Beaulieu and tasted the de Latour family’s private wine – what they called “Private Reserve” – from the 1936 vintage, he insisted it be bottled and sold as the winery’s flagship offering. In 1940, Beaulieu Vineyard released the first vintage of Private Reserve and named it in our founder’s honor. The resulting wine became the first release of Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, a wine that was destined to become Napa Valley’s first “cult” Cabernet. Today we continue with that spirit of innovation to produce exceptional wines that stand among the world’s finest. The Georges de Latour Private Reserve Winery utilizes the latest technology in combination with time-honored traditions for the production of this exceptional wine that has been widely recognized as the benchmark Cabernet Sauvignon from Rutherford since its inaugural vintage.

In 1900, when Georges de Latour’s wife, Fernande, first laid eyes on the land that would become their original Rutherford vineyard, she named it “beau lieu,” or “beautiful place.” Shortly thereafter, de Latour bought the four-acre ranch and founded Beaulieu Vineyard with the vision of making Napa Valley wines that would rival those of his native France.
