Commodore’s Message
The Bridge
As many, if not all, of you will now know, our Past Commodore Mark Whitehead passed away during the China Sea Race. This news came as an incredible shock to all who knew him. Mark made a huge contribution to the Club not just as Commodore and on various committees, but as an extremely active in-shore and off-shore sailor; co-owning a number of Etchells over the years together with the Mills 40, Straight-up. He was also the life and soul of many parties, a great mentor and role model to many of us, and a true friend to many more (he was also the cause of the first ever complaint to be made about the behavior of a current and immediate Past Commodore!). He will certainly be greatly missed and our deepest condolences go out to his family. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved in dealing with the terrible situation during and after the Race, particularly our Sailing Manager, Ailsa Angus, who handled so many arrangements whilst in the Philippines. Thank you too to Alistair Macaulay for writing Mark’s obituary which you will find on page 46.

At the time of writing, I’m in San Francisco at the International Council of Yacht Club’s World Forum where the theme this year is ‘Evolution vs. Revolution’ with sessions focusing on how yacht clubs are addressing key issues like changing membership demographics, changing modes of communications, and changes in sports culture. With discussions on how to manage inclusion and community access to our sports, this comes at an opportune time for the Club as we develop our response to the Government’s public consultation exercise on Private Recreational Leases. While there will be a report on the Forum in the next issue of Ahoy! We are planning to hold a members’ forum in May to brief those that can attend on the consultation process, how the Club is responding and how we would encourage members to get involved with the process. Please keep an eye on our regular newsletter for more details on this. With the Tomes Cup and Nations’ Cup now behind us, May is another hectic month that culminates on the weekend of 19 and 20 May with the Spring Regatta. While this makes the official end to the busy 2017/18 sailing season, we seamlessly move into ‘summer mode’ with the ever popular Sunset Series. This starts on Friday 1 June with 12 races scheduled through the summer months. We also have the Sunshine Series which a great opportunity to sail in the harbour training up new crew before the start of the season in September. As the sailing season winds down, the dragon boat season is gets underway with the Deep Water Bay Regatta hosted by the Victoria Recreation Club. With the Club’s team then entering a number of other races around Hong Kong, all eyes are on 18 June with the Sunlife Stanley International Dragon Boat Championships, where we will be defending our men’s and women’s titles for the 6th and 3rd successive year respectively, and the Hong Kong Internationals on 25 and 26 June. For the rowers, the Middle Island Youth Rowing Series will culminate with their third set of races at Middle Island on 27 May.
(International Council of Yacht Club’s World Forum),

General Manager’s Message
The Bridge
As has been mentioned by the Commodore, we were all incredibly shocked and saddened when news reached us that our Immediate Past Commodore, Mark Whitehead, had passed away during the China Sea Race. As well as being the Club’s leader during his term of Commodore, Mark’s experience, insight and personality meant that he contributed hugely to the success of the Club throughout his entire membership. But on top of that, Mark genuinely loved the Club, its Members and its staff, which was appreciated by everyone who knew him. On a purely personal point, he made every effort to make me feel welcome to the Club and to Hong Kong when I arrived seven years ago and for that I remain extremely grateful. We worked together very closely through some very challenging times during his time as Commodore and throughout that time his wise counsel was invaluable. We will all miss Mark terribly, but that pales to insignificance in comparison to how Rebecca, Francesca, Charlie and Mark’s entire extended family must be feeling, and on behalf of all staff I would like to send our thoughts and best wishes to them all.

As we edge closer to opening the new meeting/function rooms, the banquet team have nabbed a page in this issue of Ahoy! to give you an idea of some of the room configurations we will be able to offer for your events in future together with an artists’ impression of what the new facilities will look like. See page 38. There are two new initiatives being launched this month; the first is the Club’s own wine society – Bacchus. The purpose of the society is to help enhance wine knowledge, service, product range, event offerings and increase interest in wine through good fun and camaraderie. There will be special offers at various times during the year and we are planning some overseas guided wine trips too. See page 43 for details on how to join. The second new initiative is the trial of a new service system at the Poolside and Main Deck in the form of a smart pager. Please see page 42 and do feed back any comments during this trial period. Mid-month we have our Mother’s Day celebration in the Compass Room and this year the little ones can decorate their own Mother’s Day cake to mark the special occasion. At the end of the month we feature the Champagne Deutz and Delas Frères Wine Dinner in the Compass Room – see page 43 for details of both of these events. As part of our continuing guest chef programme, next month we have a very special arrangement to help celebrate Fathers Day. We will have two sets of fathers and sons here to ensure your Father’s Day celebrations is a memorable one. Two Star Michelin Chef Soenil Bahadoer and his son, One Star Michelin Chef Ryan Bahadoer are teaming up with esteemed winemaker Dave Powell and his son Callum who together founded Powell & Son based in the Barossa Valley. This extraordinary pairing of these two father and son duos will be a highlight in the Compass Room from 15 to 17 May. See page 40. Lastly, please note that its that time of year for one of the Club’s best parties of the year, the Staff Party, which this year will take place on Wednesday 16 May. Please do refer to page 45 for the operating hours of the Club. As always there is plenty of sailing and rowing activity to keep you busy at the club too so I look forward to seeing you at the club in the weeks ahead.

Feature | Boase Cohen & Collins Inter-School Sailing Festival It doesn’t get much better than this: two days of perfect sailing conditions, sunny with an easterly breeze gusting through to 12kts, much to the delight of the 24 teams assembled; representing 18 educational establishments from across Hong Kong and Macau. The teams were all set to battle it out over the weekend of 10 and 11 March at the 16th annual Boase Cohen & Collins Inter-School Sailing Festival.

ith racing taking place in Deep Water Bay, right off the front of the Club’s Middle Island clubhouse, combined with expert commentary both on and off the water by renowned yachtsman and expert team racer Jamie Boag and Kevin Lewis, the 2018 edition of the event was a fantastic spectacle for sailors and spectators alike. Teams of three boats per school competed in two divisions, with the generally older sailors in the Feva and younger sailors in the Pico Division. 126 competitive short races were sailed over the weekend.
Feature | Boase Cohen & Collins Inter-School Sailing Festival
The format for the event is team racing putting not only tactics, but boat handling skills to the test. It’s all about numbers and the competitive sailors are compelled to think not only about their own position on the race track, but rather their team’s final place in the race. All teammates’ results are combined and the teams carrying the lowest combined score progress through to the finals. Team racing requires exciting tactical sailing, where coming first may not be the best result for the team! (all three scores combine for the result i.e. 2,3,4 beats 1,5,6) All the schools in a division start racing against each other in a Round Robin format and then, if the schedule allows, the teams are seeded into Gold and Silver fleets to sail off against each other to decide the eventual winner.
Kong Sea School – always racing hard to win the crown.
2017 saw King George V School take home the win in the Feva Division (thanks in part to renowned junior sailing siblings, the Gregor brothers) with the Hong Kong Schools Sailing Association winning in the Pico Division. There is always fierce competition amongst the schools, and no greater than from Hong
Many of the schools competing in the event participate in the Club’s numerous sailing programmes run throughout the year; either as individuals or as part of their school’s curriculum. This event is designated a Clean Regatta by Sailors for the Sea; a non-profit organisation that educates and empowers boaters to protect and restore our oceans and coastal waterways. status for the efforts of hosting a designated eco – “Clean Regatta”. Saturday saw all teams racing against each other in a round-robin format. With 40 races completed in the Pico division, Tai Po Regional Squad and the ISF Academy took wins in all their races, pushing them into the Gold fleet going into the final day of racing. In the lesser attended Feva Division, only 16 races were sailed on Saturday; the remaining races being run on the Sunday to decide the Gold and Silver fleets. Island School maintained their winning streak, putting them straight into the Gold fleet. As the competition moved up a notch, there was some very tight racing on Day 2 of the competition. With some hefty gusts funnelling through the gap between Middle Island and Hong Kong Island – dumping heavier breeze straight onto the race course, the competitors had to be on their toes to contend with the shifting conditions. Many tactical battles resulted in penalties – keeping the team of eight umpires, under the watchful eye of head umpire Emily Randall, very busy!. In the end – the Feva Gold Division result came down to a three-way tie between Island
School, West Island School and French International School – all with four wins each. After a recalculation on count back, French International School came out victorious over West Island School, with Island School, taking third place. In the Pico Gold Division, the Jockey Club Ti-I College took the win over ISF Academy with Hong Kong Schools Sailing Association in third place. After racing on Sunday, awards were handed out to the victors – this year all fashioned out of sustainable upcycled wooden wine crates. The winning teams of both divisions were also rewarded with Boase Cohen & Collins Sailing Scholarship grants for their respective schools. Colin Cohen of Boase Cohen & Collins proudly presented the two grants; each worth HK$5,000, to French International School and Jockey Club Ti –I College. On behalf of the 175 very grateful students attending the 2018 regatta – a huge shout out of thanks and support goes out to all our volunteers – the nine umpires, PVOLs and the host of very dedicated individuals running the race management, results, safety, pontoon changeovers, commentary and tunes! See you all again next year!

Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club takes third in Pacific Keelboat Challenge, Auckland New Zealand 23 to 25 March 2018 For this event RNZYS invites clubs from around the Pacific region to compete over 3 days. RHKYC was issued a special invitation by RNZYS’s team competing in the China Cup last year and Ben Williams was quick to express interest in putting together a team. The Team For an event like this it is important to identify team members with complementary skills who can work together well. This group has spent many hours sailing together and against each other in a variety of boats over a long period. From the bow the team was: Oliver Merz – bow Colin McMahon – mast. Ben Williams – pit/trim Malcolm Gibson – trim Nick Burns – mainsheet Steve Ellis – helm Team RHKYC motoring home on day 3
Background Similar to RHKYC’s J/80 programme, the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron houses a fleet of 11 Farr MRX 34 footers. Originally designed for the Match Racing circuit they are now used for a mix of match and fleet racing as well as youth and adult training. While the boats are privately owned they are maintained by the Fleet Manager in strict one design configuration including identical rig settings and sails.

The Preparation The team arrived a full day and a half before the first day to allow us to familiarise with the boats and sailing area. The first sail was a low key sail with practice sails outside the Squadron to work out our onboard logistics. With a crew limit of six the spinnaker hoists and drops are pretty busy! We also spent time with the Fleet Manager and the current Class Champion to understand any quirks of the boats.
The next day we ventured out to the designated race track and were most fortunate to be joined by regular Club visitor Simon Cooke who started his sailing in the area and was able to brief us on the significant tidal and wind shear issues. We were also able to hoist the race sails, a brand new no1 and well maintained no2, main and spinnaker. Returning to the Squadron in the early evening we felt we were as well prepared as we could be.
Changing down meant everything was much more manageable. Everything except for the large main with only a 5 to 1 purchase system. Nick was going to get a good workout! We adapted to the conditions well and were on the pace immediately not giving anything away in height or speed and making good clean starts coming in from the port end. The tactic was to identify the main competition early, stay with them and cross the fleet when we could. This worked well and we finished the day in equal second with a second and two thirds, after which we were sent home ahead of a very intense rain and wind front. Day two was scheduled as two windward leewards and a short harbour race but we welcomed the news that the SIs had been amended to allow an extra windward leeward to make up for the one lost on the previous day. Conditions were a little lighter but again we were on no 2s. This meant we could focus on trim and tactics rather than managing the conditions. I believe this suited us and we again had a solid day
including a bullet in race 5 and excellent recoveries in races 6 and 7 to finish the day with a 1st, a 2nd and two 3rds. At the end of day 2 we were in a solid third place behind the two top local skippers and just 2 points off second and so it was to remain as the final day was a glass out. Conclusions This is a really excellent event. The boats are extremely well presented and equalised and race management is excellent. The conditions were reasonably consistent in terms of wind strength and direction, and while local knowledge obviously helps, with some practice and the right tactical choices we were competitive. It was a pleasure sailing in brisk conditions and in flat water. Team communications and compatibility are really important for an event like this, as is adequate practice time. These were key ingredients for our success. Auckland offers a variety of accommodation and dining options and Malcolm, acting as our Chief Entertainment Officer, did a wonderful job including arranging a superb dinner with a contingent of locally based Club members.

The Racing Day one brought a breeze of around 18 to 20kts, with gusts to 25kts. Significantly more than the 10kts we had for the two practice days so we knew we were in for some big learning. Pre-race with the big overlapping genoa was certainly a challenge so we were not surprised when the Fleet Manager instructed that racing would be conducted with the smaller no 2s. This is a feature of the MRX Fleet and takes the sail selection decision away from the skippers thus removing some of the advantage from the local teams and also preserving the expensive no 1 genoas.
Tomes Cup – A Mystery! Oriental Sugar Refineries”. And so now we had that piece of the puzzle.
Feature | Tomes Cup – A Mystery!
When Russell & Co. went out of business in 1891, former employees, Scotsman Robert Shewan and Englishman Charles Alexander Tomes, took over the remains of the operation and changed its name to Shewan, Tomes & Co. in 1895. The new company eventually became one of the leading trading companies in Hong Kong and China during the late 19th and early 20th century with offices in Hong Kong, Canton, Shanghai, Tientsin, Kobe, London, and New York with agencies throughout the region. Charles Alexander Tomes had five children; one of whom was Alexander Hadden Tomes (born 1891 in Hong Kong). Alexander grew up to marry Elizabeth St. John Whiting and they had two children, including his namesake Alexander Hadden Tomes (1931 – 1997). Enter Noel Croucher whom we have all heard of. Noel was introduced to his ‘first proper job’ by Sir Paul Chater and it was in around 1911 that Noel joined the firm of Shewan, Tomes & Co.
A
ccording to the late Frank Hydes, in the 1960s Noel Croucher had received a letter from a Mrs Tomes, widow of a member of the Tomes family, late of the old Hong Kong firm of Shewan Tomes & Co., Ltd., (now part of the Hutchison Group). The letter stated that among her late husband’s effects was an old trophy, the Sugar Refiners Cup, which she thought the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club might like. This was gratefully accepted and was given for another staggered all-classes pursuit race. In ignorance of history, many members referred to it as the Taikoo Sugar Cup, quite forgetting that Taikoo Sugar was merely the sole survivor of the various earlier sugar refineries, of which Tomes were one. To keep the record straight, Noel Croucher had the Cup renamed Tomes Cup and it remains to this day. The inscription on the Cup reads “Sugar Refiners Cup won by Naomi April 1st 1880.”
We were recently having a good look at the Tomes Cup when an engraving on a small shield affixed to the base caught our eye.

It reads “Presented by Mr. A.H. Tomes in memory of Dora Delano Forbes”. So who was Dora Delano Hobbs? Why was the trophy originally called the Sugar Refiners Cup? What was Dora’s connection to Mr. Tomes? We tried to find out. But fair warning, it does get a little complicated! Deborah “Dora” Perry Delano was born 1847 in the USA and at aged 20 she married William Howell Forbes – an American businessman based in Hong Kong. He was the head partner of Russell & Co. and was the 11th chairman of the board of Directors of Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation from 1879 to 1880. Dora’s younger sister Sara Ann was the mother of FDR, the 32nd President of the United States, Franklin Delano Roosevelt. It was William Howell Forbes who owned Naomi and therefore was the winner of the Sugar Refiners Cup dated 1 April 1880. Our research led us to the Central Library in Hong Kong where we searched through old newspapers and found a clipping which read “The Race for the Cup presented to the Yacht Club by the employees of the China and
Robert Shewan was succeeded as partner by A.L. Shields who later became Commodore of the Club (1927-1928 and 1932-1936). It really was a small world back then. Going back to the letter referred to earlier that Noel Croucher received in the 1960s – we don’t appear to have a copy here and neither does the Croucher Foundation. Our findings lead us to assume that the letter came from the widow of Alexander Hadden Thomas. But we are still no closer to finding out how the Tomes’ came to have the trophy. Perhaps when Russell & Co. went out of business and the family left Hong Kong, they left the trophy behind in the offices that Robert Shewan and Charles Alexander Tomes took over. We may never know but the journey to find out has been great fun and we’ll keep digging into it and perhaps one day the missing pieces will fall into place. Do you have any pieces of the puzzle that we might not be aware of to solve this mystery? Perhaps you might have some interesting or funny stories to share about taking part in the Tomes Cup – we’d love to hear from you. We also plan to research our other trophies to see if we can find some more interesting stories. Let us know if you have a particular interest in learning about any in particular.

The final event for the 2017-2018 sailing season takes place in Victoria Harbour on 19 and 20 May. This two-day regatta includes class boats and big boats and offers challenging sailing conditions as the weather starts to adapt to the summer patterns. We look forward to seeing you at Kellett Island as both sailors and spectators. For families with children a movie will be shown in the Chart Room on Saturday afternoon.
Sunset Series
Sunshine Series
The ever popular summer Sunset Series will kick off on Friday 1 June with 12 races scheduled throughout the summer months. The series is open to all and is a good excuse to start the weekend early. The Sunset Series is a great event for sailing with friends in a fun and relaxed environment followed by informal beers on the main lawn. The series is a tactical challenge on when to sandbag a race to improve your boat’s handicap. The race track will hopefully be in front of the club which makes it a great event for spectators if you don’t wish to sail. Warning signal is 1740hrs – see you on 1 June.
The Sunshine Series is a great opportunity to sail in the harbour training up new crew before the start of the season in September. Skippers wishing to sign up new crew or sailors wanting to find boats please contact the Sailing Office and we’ll try our best to put you in contact with each other.

Sportsboats Update W O RD S: RO B B AT ES
ith the season three quarters over, the Sportsboats Class have had one of our most competitive years yet and only five points separate the top three boats on the season ladder. Russ Parker and Amanda are reaping the benefits of modern design and build and are proving almost unbeatable in their brand new VX One, F.A.B. and have won 15 races so far this year on the SMS handicap system, including taking out the Earl Grey and Lipton’s series’ and currently lead the season ladder by one point from Merlin. Hotwired (Rob Bates and Gerry Sonnemans) and Merlin (Steve Bourne) each have six SMS wins for the season.

In the Magic 25s Hotwired has won 13 races, including taking out the Jasmine and Presidents Bell series’ and a close second in the Class Championships and are sitting third on the season ladder. However, the big news from the Sportsboats fleet is that after 17 years of trying, Steve Bourne has finally won the Class Championship with a super consistent performance with a worst result of 3rd across the eight races. Merlin finished on 14 points; three points clear of Hotwired, with R2B2 (Dion Houghton) a point further back in 3rd. Well done to Steve and his team. Steve has been a fantastic ambassador for the Sportsboats and Club over many years and
this is a well-deserved result. Merlin is also sitting second on the season ladder (one point behind F.A.B.) and also lead the way in the Magics with 14 wins for the season. Once again the Sportsboats have performed very well in this year’s Top Dog Trophy Series, with Steve Bourne currently sitting 5th overall, R2B2 again coming second in the Around the Island Race and Gnarwahl (Eliot Cargile) coming 2nd in the Lipton Trophy. Perhaps the most pleasing aspect of Sportsboat racing in 2017/18 is the quality of the racing, there have been eight different winners in the SMS division so far and superb

racing at all levels in the fleet. We have also introduced a performance handicap system within our fleet to level the playing field and recognise improvements within the fleet, this has been extremely successful and so far we have had 11 different winners with only 10 points separating the top four boats on the season ladder. With some fantastic racing still ahead of us, including Tomes Cup , Nations’ Cup and the Autumn Regatta, the Sportsboats are looking forward to a really strong finish to the season and building the fleet for an event better 2018/19.

RHKYC Big Boat Championship Sailing Helmuth Hennig of the Big Boat Committee
he Big Boat Class Committee held a Big Boat Happy Hour on 15 March in the Chart Room. In attendance were 40 big boat owners and sailors which participated in the first Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club Big Boat Championship prizegiving. The Big Boat Championship is open to all boats with a valid IRC or HKPN rating participating in one or more of the designated races or regattas as part of the Championship series for each calendar year. Yachts are only eligible to be entered in either IRC or HKPN divisions. Scoring is based on the Cox-Sprague (1994 modified) scoring system, using the results published by the organizing authority of each race. Where Series’ or Regattas are included,
the overall result of that event will be used as a single result per yacht. Prizes will be awarded to the top three boats in each division. Designated 2018 RHKYC Big Boat Championship events China Sea 200 Dash Rolex China Sea Race Monsoon Big Boat Spring Cup Big Boat Summer Cup Spring Regatta Typhoon Series Port Shelter Regatta ABC Opening Regatta China Coast Regatta Round The Island Race
In the IRC Division, Ambush took first place while Blackjack got second and Zannekin took third place. In the HKPN Division, No One Else came away with first place, Bleu took second and Lotech got third place. The RHKYC Big Boat Championship series counts results as well as participation in events, so the more the boat participates in the events, the higher the chance of winning a prize. The Big Boat Class Committee would like to thank Ropes & Gray, a leading law firm for sponsorship of the Big Boat Happy Hour and Monsoon Big Boat Spring Cup. We also encourage all Big Boats to enter the upcoming Big Boat Summer Cup which will be held on 12 and 13 May in Shelter Cove.

Watch out boys! The race course started at the buoy by the Hong Kong Country Club waterfront and finished by the RHKYC beach. The total of 15 races for U14, U16 and U19 girls and boys categories in singles, doubles and quads passed rapidly with some boats coming in within seconds of each other as the many almost deafening finish line horn blasts alerted. Good sportsmanship was shown by rowers who despite a wobble into the water or off the course continued with determination to pass the finish line. To finish off the competitions, two exciting and well cheered erg relays were held. One was an on the spot find a pair of parents or teachers to join the school team erg race. Thanks to Nick Crabb, Ben Rowe, Keith Cheung and Ellen Leung as well as all the volunteers, who included Club rowers, Hong Kong team rowers, teachers and parents, for making this event happen. Also an applause to the school team representatives for their efforts. It is a pleasure to see the growing number of young rowers and seeing their school representatives, families and friends come to watch and support them as Commodore Robert Stoneley remarked in his speech before handing the winners their medals and cups.
n Sunday 25 March the Middle Island boat house was awash with activity keeping Ah Tai nimble on his sun and salt water weathered toes. 54 youth rowers from eight schools involved in the RHKYC Schools Rowing Programme participated in the replace 2nd Middle Island Inter-School Regatta with RHKYC Schools Invitational Rowing Regatta organised jointly by the Rowing and Paddling Department and the Youth Rowing Development Sub-committee. In order of their team size, the schools were: Hong Kong International School, South Island School, Chinese International School, Kellet International School, Elsa High School, Li Po Chun United World College and Island School. Celebrated yacht designer Ron Holland drew his first yacht at 19 years of age. He rapidly made a name for himself as one of the most successful and sought-after designers in the highly competitive world of international ocean racing, before advancing to bigger things. His seminal influence on the then-new category of superyachts, those toys of the rich and super-rich, brought him fresh success, and an introduction to a world of fascinating personalities: business tycoons, royalty and rock stars.

New Moorings in Hong Kong W O RD S: A L A N REID
MAPS COURTESY OF GOOGLE
Marine he Hong Kong Marine Department recently allocated 46 moorings to owners of pleasure vessels inside Hei Ling Chau Typhoon Shelter.
Private Moorings Allocation Plan (Hei Ling Chau Typhoon Shelter)
Hei Ling Chau was originally built in the last century as a Typhoon Shelter for construction barges, dredgers, crane barges and other working craft. The shelter is approximately one square kilometre in size and had depths of 3.4 to 5.6 metres. Due to its location and difficulty of access the shelter has lain almost empty as can be seen on the right.
Conceptual Plan Enhancing the utilisation of typhoon Shelters
MarDep, in response to a question raised in Legco, agreed that moorings could be laid for pleasure vessels in the shelter due to its underutilisation. MarDeps original conceptual plan for the area, taking up about half of the shelter, made allowance for 740 moorings varying in size from 10 to 75 metre moorings. MarDep wrote to pleasure vessel owners who were on the waiting list for a private mooring and 46 owners who applied were allocated moorings as can be seen from the picture below. The moorings range in size from 10 to 37 metres in length and are in a revised location from originally conceived. A ballot was held at the offices of the MarDep where, by drawing lots, the individual owners were allocated their space. At present there is no ferry service to the mooring area and one assumes that a local Kaido could be hired from Mui Wo, Peng Chau or Cheung Chau to access the pleasure vessels on the moorings. It will certainly be a long day out to go for a sail.

he 2017/18 Winter League is drawing to a close with the only one of our four teams vying for a playoff spot. The combined American Club/Yacht Club Masters 22 team is currently fourth with only a couple of matches remaining and should be able to hold on if matches go to form. Elliot Froidevaux has been the standout performer for the team, being ranked second in the division. The Masters 4 team, led by Roger Dunn, season has finished with them stuck firmly in the middle of the table. In the main league, the Division 10 team was able to win 4 of their last 5 matches to move from the bottom of the table to 7th. Paul Denham was the highest ranked player at 13th. The Division 15 team suffered from a few of their best players moving to Division 10 this year and finished last. Adrian Pierse will be looking to recruit some talent to try and bounce back next season.
Box League Angelo Iannazzo has volunteered to take over the running of Box league. We’d like to thank Francis Longuepee, who had had more than his fair share of time co-ordinting it.

Overlooking the Western Harbour with IFC on one side and ICC on the other, the view will be outstanding, and it truly will be a great venue for members to use for their social and business functions. Creating these function rooms was one of the focus points of the development as it created greater separation between the smaller scale, more social member usage of the Club by a member and their guests of the restaurants and bars, and the larger-scale family and function events – whilst at the same time ensuring that the Compass Room and the Chart Room will always be available as the members’ dining room and lounge respectively.

DAVE AND CALLUM POWELL
SOENIL AND RYAN BAHADOER
PROFESSIONAL CAREER Chef Soenil Bahadoer’s cuisine is notable for a high dose of creativity, together with exotic influences and a deep understanding of the basic cookery techniques. Combining classic French dishes with herbs and spices with his Hindustani, Surinamese and Indian background, a harmonious combination of taste, smell, colour and forms that provides diners with a tasting trip around the world thanks to an intense explosion of flavours. Since joining De Lindehof in 1995, the incredible, exotic and sensory experience led him to obtain his first Michelin Star in 2004 and the second Michelin Star ten years later in 2014. Going further, he became SVH Master Chef in 2015. Ryan Bahadoer, son of two-star chef Soenil Bahadoer, gets a different workplace. He makes the switch from Jiu.nu in Eindhoven to the star restaurant De Karpendonkse Hoeve by Ingrid van Eeghem, also in Eindhoven. He is eager, thinks out-of-the box and cooks with bold flavours. Now he is working in The Student Hotel Eindhoven as Executive Chef, a place to meet new people, get inspired and of course enjoy good food. POWELL & SON Dave Powell, the esteemed winemaker from the Barossa Valley and the founder/ winemaker of Torbeck Winery has teamed up with his son Callum and together the two have founded Powell & Son. Dave was just 19 when he first made wine in the Barossa Valley. After working extensively abroad, gaining winemaking expertise in Italy, France and North America, he returned home to work with Barossa Valley stalwarts Yalumba, Peter Lehmann, Wolf Blass, Saltram and Rockford. Over those ten years Dave developed the personal style that has come to characterise his own unique style of wines. It had always been father and sons’ intention to make wine together, and in 2014 they made their dreams a reality with the foundation of Powell & Son. Honouring the Barossa and Eden Valleys, and the people who planted the vines almost two hundred years before, Powell & Son wines reflect the vineyards from which they come.

Mark Whitehead (1957 – 2018) Club Lines
Despite a crumpled and often grumpy appearance, behind the pebbled specs Mark Whitehead had a wealth of energy and a heart of gold. Unshaven and tousled, wearing a pair of tattered shorts and teeshirt, he looked as though he had slept in a sailbin, which in his younger days he sometimes had. But like Clark Kent he had an alter ego; as a senior executive in the Jardine Matheson Group, Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Matilda Hospital and of course Commodore of this esteemed Club.
ark joined the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club in 1984. He served on the General Committee from 2008 to 2016, assuming the role of Commodore in June 2014 where he helped to lead the Club through what has been its biggest capital project ever. His enthusiasm, drive and energy helped drive the project through, whilst ensuring that Club continued to deliver what it does best, its core sports of sailing and rowing.
Mark was a fierce competitor (but, like all Greats, was often let down by his teammates…..), both in sailing and the other sports which he undertook. When he arrived in Hong Kong, he played rugby for Kowloon Rugby Club and also squash, tennis and latterly golf – although he described himself as the worst golfer in the world and said he seldom actually played on the course. He completed the Trailwalker and went on adventures with his children and friends; camping and kayaking, skiing and mountain climbing; even motorbiking upcountry while he was living in Vietnam. Whether in work or in play, Mark was a straight talker who usually delivered good, sound advice albeit not always in the most diplomatic language. Many the novice sailor and junior employee who has learnt some colourful Anglo Saxon vocabulary and unique turns of phrase from Mark.
PHOTO: GUY NOWELL
His sailing in Hong Kong began on Scoundrel, and within 18 months of arriving in Hong Kong he had acquired his first boat with David Stannard; Scrumptious Oggy, an Impala. For harbour racing this was followed by three Etchells – Don’t Panic (ex- Hold-the-Phone), The Answer Is…. and Mind the Bumps, co-owned with Alastair Macaulay and John Breen and latterly Jaap Kalverkamp. He participated in a number of interports and the last Etchells Worlds held in Hong Kong. He continued his offshore racing, competing in the Southern Cross series as part of the Hong Kong team with John White on Drake’s Prayer, doing several China Sea and San Fernando races, King’s Cup, President’s Cup and the Raja Muda. Eventually, in 2015, he became a joint owner of a big boat of his own. Mark chose the new name for the Mills 40, ex-Mandrake – Straight Up – a good reflection of his approach to life.
Mark joined Jardine Matheson in 1987 as an in-house corporate lawyer, before moving into the operations side where he undertook a number of varied and challenging business roles, finally spending seven years as CEO of Hongkong Air Cargo Terminals. In 1989 he married Rebecca and had two children; Francesca and Charlie, who are now living and working in New York and Auckland respectively. Mark was a devoted and loving family man and treasured the many family trips to exotic locations and the exciting activities which they undertook together.
Mark Whitehead was born 7 March 1957, first son of Tony and Diana. He attended Bablake School in Coventry, where his proudest achievement was conspiring with his friend, and fellow prefect, Keith Parsley to reposition a builder’s wheelbarrow and tools in an area of wet cement while the workers were away on a tea break. These two naughty boys undertook many other pranks, finally earning themselves a formal caution from the local constabulary – a little known fact that Mark kept well under wraps during his time in Hong Kong.
Mark was challenged by gadgets and technology, and his efforts at maintaining and repairing boats usually ended up with two bills to settle – one from the Boatyard to sort out his efforts and another from the Main Bar where he would relieve his frustration. As he would say, he was “tits on a bullfrog” useless at DIY. Unfortunately one technological invention which he did take to was the karaoke machine. This ruined many an evening as he gyrated (dis)gracefully around the room crooning his favourite numbers. Anyone who witnessed Mark giving his unique rendition of “I’m a believer” will not be able to forget it in a hurry.
Mark learnt to sail in Mirror dinghies on Draycote Water before coming to Hong Kong in 1983 with law firm Johnson Stokes and Master.
Mark died doing what he loved; sailing offshore with his friends. A life cut too short, but what a life.
