Commodore’s Message

The Bridge

We received some fantastic news from the 2019 Optimist Asian & Oceanian Championship held in Oman in October, where several members of our RHKYC Sharks Racing Squad competed for Hong Kong. Our young member, Julia Jacobsen, did us proud by winning gold in the girls division; a first for Hong Kong! China Coast Regatta 2019 has finished and the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club Nha Trang Rally has just started on their passage at Commodore John Woo 會長胡祖榮 the time of this write-up. I wish the competitors a safe passage and fair winds. Last, I have to thank the race management team led by Inge Strompf-Jepsen. They did a great job putting on six races within two days because of the challenging light wind conditions which affected the China Coast Regatta and saw racing abandoned on Day 2. November sees a number of the sailing classes having their Class Championships so best of luck to all the competitors.

After the Around the Island Race, the following Saturday afternoon sees the BuyAssociation Lipton Trophy taking place, the first pursuit race of the Top Dog Series in the harbour. For RHKYC members involved in Big-Boat racing, there are many events taking place in Asia after our Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club Nha Trang Rally; the first being the Raja Muda Selangor Regatta in Malaysia on from 15 to 23 November. I wish the best of luck to our members in this regatta. On the rowing side of things, I’d like to offer my congratulations to the Club’s fine rowing section for winning an incredible total of 27 medals at the Hong Kong Rowing Championships and therefore being awarded the 40 th Anniversary Memorial Trophy which is awarded to the Club that wins the most medals in the event. An incredible effort from all members involved and of course to the coaching team. Well done! I would like to wish all Club members racing at the 2019 World Rowing Coastal Champs the very best of luck and once again thank all members who have been involved with organising the event and volunteering their time. The Coastal Rowing and Outrigger Canoe Around the Island Races are taking place on 9 and 10 November respectively. The coastal rowing event this year, has a record number of entries (currently 36 but could rise). Again, my thanks goes to all of the members who are involved in both organising and running the event.

Later in the month, we have Hong Kong’s biggest sailing event Around the Island Race on Sunday 24 November, let’s hope for brilliant weather and good wind to allow everyone to sail the full circumnavigation of Hong Kong Island in great sailing conditions.

That’s a lot of thanks to give and a lot of luck to wish all of our members! We are very fortunate to have such a busy sporting calendar.

Having just had China Coast Regatta and the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club Hong Kong to Nha Trang Rally, we look forward to hosting the World Rowing Coastal Championships from our Clubhouse at Kellett Island from 1 to 3 November.

complexity and finesse of the great Burgundian terroirs of the Côte d’Or. These are old world wines at their best. Next we have the Boschendal Wine Dinner on 5 December introducing a South African winery that was founded over 330 years ago, in 1685! And the third wine dinner follows shortly after on 7 December and again there is limited seating available. This is a now signature wine dinner for the Club a ‘1000 Points Best of the Best Wine Dinner’ which highlights ten wines all rated 100 points and paired with an incredible menu – plus it raises money for the RHKYC Charity Foundation. The Whisky Masterclass that was introduced recently is going down rather smoothly with members and guests. Join us for the next two instalments on 6 November and 4 December. It’s only a half hour masterclass but you’ll certainly come away with a better appreciation for Scottish Whisky at its best. If you currently have a car pass, the renewal details will shortly be dropping through your letterbox. At the same time will be the application form for the new RFID tags that will allow you access to the car park at Kellett Island without the need for swiping your membership card. Don’t miss out. As of 1 November at 1000hrs we are taking reservations for Christmas and New Year’s Eve so please do have a good look at the separate brochure or visit the Club website for details. Apart from the myriad events at the Club, there are gift hampers to order and special Christmas takeaway items. Chef is confident that we will beat the previous record of 230 turkeys and 207 hams, cooked at the Club for members’ Christmas celebrations at home. Last but by no means least, talking of Christmas and just in time to help you resolve the dilemma of present buying, the Ship Shop will shortly be launching a new online shop where members can order Sail Racing clothing and Club branded souvenirs and presents for home delivery, anywhere in the world. Watch out for announcements in the weekly newsletters, social media, posters and on the Club website. See you at the Annual General Meeting on 20 November.

Plastic Free Seas Talk The Bridge

lastic Free Seas, the Hong Kong based environmental charity and one of the partner organisations of the RHKYC Charity Foundation was invited by the Family Panel Sub-Committee to give a Plastic Free Seas Talk to our children members on the first day of the Autumn Regatta on 7 September which was designated as the 170 th Anniversary Hong Kong Harbour Charity Race. Despite a few showers on the day, all the children and their parents enjoyed the interactive talk and were committed to a beach cleanup with laughter and great effort. Our members and guests also showed their support to the RHKYC Charity Foundation by putting on the Charity Foundation signature red T-shirts in various adult sizes. Thank you to the Family Panel Sub-Committee and all of the members who attended to support this meaningful event!

The Hong Kong Rowing Championships are usually held in late October, however the 41st edition was moved to 21 and 22 September to allow preparations to take place for the World Rowing Coastal Championships that are being held at the beginning of November at Kellett Island.

he Hong Kong Championships typically attract the best of crews from around Asia and this year Hong Kong crews were joined by international crews from the Philippines, Taiwan, Singapore, Shanghai and Japan.

20 RHKYC crews participated, spread across Open and Masters events from 1x to 8+.

The September date led to expectations of high heat and humidity; obviously uncomfortable racing conditions, but we were blessed with a weekend of pleasantly low humidity and moderate sunshine for the whole weekend.

Due to the large number of entries, many first round races required crews 2nd to 6th to race a repechage in place of semi finals to decide the lineup for the medal contention races.

The wind however, did play a significant role in the racing. A strong, gusty breeze resulted in terrible conditions along the race course – an unwelcome change from the glassy calm conditions experienced a few days previously in the preparation paddle.

10

| NOVEMBER 2019 AHOY!

On a turbulent race course, the coastal rowing experience of our members showed, and results began to roll in.

Singles In singles, Mark Welles secured a commanding victory over his rivals in Masters D1x, Anna Lee Fisher raced the first two of her three(!) 2km races in her single on Saturday, finishing 5th in the final on Sunday. Alex Bidlake won Masters A 1x on Sunday morning.

The men’s double of Jon Davies and Max Thomas cruised into second place in their heat, reserving their energy for a repechage that was eventually to be unsuccessful in getting through to the final. Alex Bidlake and Michele Lam gained gold in womens Master C 2x. Carly Chung and Irene Or came 3rd in Master A 2x. Fours The Womens Masters C 4x of Alex Bidlake, Audrey Slighton, Irene Or and Michele Lam rowed well to a gold medal on Saturday afternoon. Club stalwart Ng Kong Wan had gathered together an all star cast for a composite Open 4– (coxless four), traditionally a very strong event, featuring two HK national team rowers and two RHKYC members in the form of Wan and Nathan Ho. This boat was one of the star performances of the championships, winning their heat by 15 seconds, overcoming turbulent water conditions. In the final, they gave the Hong

Kong U23 team an incredibly close race, being pipped into a silver medal by a mere 6 seconds. Well done Wan, Nathan and crew! In the Open 4x (coxless quad), Calvin Tang, Ben Rowe, Chris Knollman and Andrew McCabe secured their place directly to the final by beating a crew from HKUST by 5 seconds, again in awful conditions. Their race was to begin after a delay caused by boats sinking on the start line. The tempest was of Shakespearean proportions. Both of the other RHKYC quads, albeit through the circuitous repechage route, made it through to the final, resulting in half of the field being RHKYC! In the final, unfortunately shortened to 1000m due to conditions, the quads battled strongly, with the crew of Tang, Rowe, Knollman and McCabe rowing to a gold medal, the first in an open event for several years, securing victory over HKUST and Sha Tin Grace RC. The other club crews of Dan Sham, Liam Baker, Guy Parsonage and Hamish King (RHKYC B), and Thuan Tran, Nick Jones, Michael Johnson and Marcel Chambers (RHKYC A), rowed to a close 5th and 6th place respectively. In both masters A and D 4-, RHKYC came away with more gold!

Eights In men’s 8+, RHKYC battled with old adversaries Easter RC/Shanghai RC. This time, gamely allowing the opposition a win for the benefit of their morale. It was decided that too long a winning streak for RHKYC may be bad for relationships between the three clubs, so since Easter and Shanghai had gone to the effort of producing a composite of the best of both clubs, we should let them win. Tough racing produced great results, in addition to inventing new and novel ways of keeping waves from swamping rowing boats. The club was awarded the 40 th Anniversary Memorial Cup for the most number of gold medals won by any club over the weekend. Anna Lee Fisher deserves special mention for the furthest distance rowed by any member over the weekend, having rowed 7 races, most of them in small boats, in the appalling conditions. Well done Anna and all of those who raced so hard.

Autumn Regatta 2019 W O RD S: VIVIA N N G A N | IM AGES: GU Y N OW EL L

The Club’s 2019-2020 sailing season kicked off with the Autumn Regatta on September 7 and 8. Whilst the weekend had beautiful sunny days unfortunately the wind was not looking so good with very light winds forecasted. 76 boats turned out from the Big Boats and one design classes including Dragons, Etchells, Flying Fifteens, Impalas, J/80s, Pandoras and Ruffians.

ace 1, dubbed the ‘170 th Anniversary Hong Kong Harbour Charity Race’, was to celebrate the first club-organised regatta that took place in Victoria Harbour back in 1849. It was designed as a 170-minute pursuit race with 24 separate starts, staggering from the slowest to fastest boats. Big Boat Boss and the Pandora fleet started in the first batch with TP52 Phoenix, starting last – in pursuit of the rest of the fleet ahead.

| NOVEMBER 2019 AHOY!

Racing started in picture perfect weather with breeze at 11 to 12kts, however the wind died when the main fleet sailed the third leg between Tai Koo Shing and Hung Hom. At one point, all helms thought they could win since the gap between the yachts was negligible. Eventually, only 48 boats managed to finish in the time limit. Etchells Gunga Din took the win in the 170 th Anniversary Hong Kong Harbour Charity Race,

followed by TP52 Free Fire crossing the line in 2nd and Lighthorse Alphaplus in 3rd. All participating boats were encouraged to raise money for the RHKYC Charity Foundation and Blu won the prize for the highest amount of funds raised. Two harbour races were scheduled for Day 2. The wind forecast had been grim at first but Race Officer Barry Truhol found a southeasterly breeze of 5 to 7kts at Hung Hom.

Feature | Autumn Regatta 2019

For Race 2, most divisions were sent sailing upwind to Tai Koo Shing and back to finish off at Hung Hom. By this time the wind speed was increasing gradually to around 10 to 12kts and most of the boats finished the race blissfully in pretty decent breeze. Things took a turn for the worse during Race 3 when the downpour at midday killed all breeze and, as a result, the boats all stopped in their tracks. Barry made a call to shorten Big Boats Division 1 for the third rounding and abandoned the rest of the classes. Special mention goes to Shawn Kang’s Lighthorse Alphaplus which took the trophy in IRC Big Boat Division 1, to Footloose who enjoyed six consecutive wins in the J/80s and to Gunga Din for their win in the Etchells for the third year running. We couldn’t have put on a successful and safe event without our dedicated volunteers – a big shout out to the Race Management team of Barry Truhol, Bonnie Cheng, Sheila Chan, NOVEMBER 2019 AHOY! |

The NYYC Invitational Cup has run every two years since 2009 and brings together 20 yacht clubs for a week of intense sailing and camaraderie with many Olympians, America’s Cup, and World Class Champions amongst the crews. Only non-professionals are allowed on the crew and the boats provided are completely identical with locked off rigging and identical sails.

his was the 6th time that Royal Hong Kong Yacht club has been invited, and has participated, but although the format of Corinthian racing was retained, there were substantial changes in the regatta. The criteria for the crew was changed from the previous 12 crew, to either one female with a six other crew, or two females and as many crew as you like within the 685kg weight allowance. We needed as many hands as possible, and the ladies ruled! The team was lucky to have the participation of Scarlett Manzoni (Cockpit), who has risen through the ranks of the RHKYC Youth Sailing Training Squad and Scotia Ryer (Runners) known to many of you through her considerable Club work as the recent past organiser of the Etchells fleet. the fleet of MRX, and managed to get used to working together on a smaller boat. The team also spent a weekend practicing on Ambush (Taylor/Isler), which is a larger heavier version of the IC 37.

The previous events had been raced in the stately Swan 42, but this year it was to be the new tippier and lighter new IC 37, which is more like a Magic than the heavier keelboats we were used to. The IC 37 was first launched late last year and the American teams used them to qualify for this event, sailing around 30 races before this event. A few of the teams even purchased their own boat to ensure they were familiar with the class.

Trying to make up for our lack of experience in the IC 37 we arrive three days before this event, allowing two days of practice supervised by an excellent professional coach, Peter Alarie, We at least started on the foothills of the learning curve.

To help prepare us for this regatta, many of the Hong Kong team members took part in the Auckland Pacific Challenge in March, sailed in

One large plus of arriving early was that we found that, in-spite of three months of dieting, we were 11kg over the weight limit. The two days of practice, combined with salads and red wine worked wonders. We turned up gaunt and shrivelled for the formal weigh in at the beginning of the

regatta on Saturday, and were 7 hard won kilos under the limit. Luckily there was no racing or practice that day due to the hurricane passing offshore ! The NYYC organise this regatta to an unbelievably high level. They start the event with a day of lectures on safety, boat handling, weather, and local conditions. The race officers are extremely professional and both they and their crew are formally dressed in blazers and ties, running the event superbly for the enjoyment of the participants. To keep the fleet going a supply of spares parts, spinnakers, and mechanics are on hand during the racing, and a spare boat is available in the event of major breakdown. A medical team is on the course while we raced to cope with any accident, with helicopters and ambulances on NOVEMBER 2019 AHOY! |

Feature | Rolex NYYC Invitational Cup standby. On the water umpiring was provided by five umpires giving immediate decisions on any infringement. The decisions were final avoiding the usual time spent by competitors in the protest room. Add to this our whole crew had the luxury of stayed in the magnificent NYYC Harbour Court, where the food, drink, service and ambience was without equal. There were three courses used by the Race Officer. The first is the open bay facing the Atlantic, and the second and third courses located within the wide estuary. After the briefings and lectures Sunday and Monday were two days of mandatory practice starts and practice races, held in the open bay in choppy sea, with the wind slowly dropped from 18 to 20kts on Sunday to around 14 to 16kts on Monday. Our performance over these two days was generally mid fleet, but our starts and upwind speed needed further work. Crew work and downwind speed were excellent. After the magnificent formal opening ceremony on the Monday night, Tuesday, the first day of racing was a drifter in a calm sea on the outside course. We waited for 3 hours for wind which eventually crept up to 6kts. Buried at the start we couldn’t find a clear lane in the slow moving traffic and we rounded the windward mark in 18th place, which is where we stayed until the finish. We couldn’t seem to find a way of making the boat go fast in the light. On Wednesday the wind was 18 to 20kts from the south, creating very rough conditions on the outer course so we were wisely moved to the inshore course. In the higher wind our boat speed and fortunes changed, and in the

20

| NOVEMBER 2019 AHOY!

first of three races we achieved an 8th. The second race was not quite so successful, and suffering a 720 combined with losing four places at the finish, we finished 15th. The third race we maintained good upwind speed and scintillating downwind slides, clocking 15+kts and ended with a 6th place. Our best day of the regatta; already exhausted, but happily lying 12th overall! A magnificent lobster dinner that night helped revive us – then early to bed On Thursday the wind switched to the East at 20kts, gusting 22. We raced in the outside course, but as the wind direction was offshore, only had 2m sea. The race committee raised code flags J & V requiring that jib and mainsails had to be reefed. The seas built throughout the day and gave us some bumpy upwind exhilarating spinnaker runs. In the first race we achieved a respectable 9th place.

In the second race we were fouled by Argentina who in spite of repeated hails failed to keep clear of us at the start, and ended up being picked up by a wave and landing on our starboard side taking out the lifelines and stanchions, and leaving us foundering for 5 minutes while we did temporary repairs. The umpires gave Argentina a penalty but the damage had been done. We clawed our way back and finished in 16th place. We sought redress from the Race Committee for the time lost in the incident. The International Jury after two hours disqualified both Argentina and us for not doing enough to keep clear!! It was a difficult decision to understand as Argentina had made little attempt to keep clear and there was no way we could move our boat sideways to avoid a collision. By the end of this race the repair boat was running out of spinnakers and spares, so the Race Officer called it a day.

Saturday was the final day of racing, and this time the Race Officer took us five miles further into the estuary than before. Flat water with a 1m chop and yet again 20+kts of wind, dropping over the day to 14 by the end. Competition for first place was tight with one point separating San Diego and Sydney. For the first two races reefed jibs were required, and we had a reasonable start and reached the top mark mid fleet, but another 720 was called. Caught up on the runs and achieved a moderate 12th. San Diego meanwhile had picked up the top mark finishing their chances of winning the regatta. There were three general recalls and then a black flag for the second race- a reasonable start for us but average upwind speed and direction, and another 720 resulted in a 17th finish. The last race was started under black flag. With the softening breeze both our up and downwind speed was poor and finished 16th. Sydney meanwhile achieved a well deserved victory in the regatta. Overall we finished the regatta in 16th place but we achieved our ultimate aim of great racing and enjoying ourselves. The prizegiving dinner was its usual sumptuous affair with each team receiving a prize in recognition of participating. We all celebrated surviving the one of the windiest and toughest regattas ever. Each of us was completely exhausted with aching muscles and blisters. Scotia only realized she had cracked a rib in the Argentinian incident when all the other muscle aches and pains faded! It was a superbly organised regatta in true New York style. The IC 37 is very lively boat, sell designed and relatively straightforward to sail, but needs to include young and very fit crew to perform well. As a crew we worked together very well, and had a great time, but realised that we needed more time learning and working with the new boat to achieve a good result. Hopefully RHKYC will receive an invitation again 2021, the weather will be kinder to us, and we will have more time to practice in the boat before the event. NOVEMBER 2019 AHOY! |

On Friday the inshore course was chosen to minimise damage as the wind was 20 to 22kts -our prayers for a gentle breeze had been ignored! We had three races with average starts, a couple of 720 penalties one of which might have been justified, and an OCS. Great crew work and exciting runs but we dropped to 15th overall. Again early to bed!

DRAGON BOAT CONTACTS dragonboat@rhkyc.org.hk

Rowing Spain and United Kingdom

he 14th IDBF World Dragon Boat Championships was held in Pattaya, Thailand from 20 to 25 August. This year’s competition included more than 30 nations competing across eight categories including Premiers, Seniors, U24s and Juniors for the Open, Women’s and Mixed classes. The paddling section of the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club present and past were well represented with more than a dozen Club members representing five different countries; Australia, Great Britain, Hong Kong, Spain and USA. Dragon boating is a sport with teams consisting of a large number of people, so getting teams to come together for training at the national team level is challenging. The unique approaches

chosen this year highlighted the lengths that these Club members will go to for their chosen sport of dragon boating. Some showed their dedication to sport and country by travelling halfway around the world to the USA multiple times for training camps and time trials. Others, competing for Great Britain and Spain, were able to train and compile crews consisting of paddlers from the community right here – in recognition of the enormous following of the sport in Hong Kong. This was not only a great opportunity for the athletes, but also the Club. These teams were able to train in our world class facilities, with the Club’s coaches and dragon boat fleet at Middle Island. Still more Royal-X paddlers,

having relocated back home, found that their time paddling at the Club held them in good stead to fulfill their national team aspirations. The venue for the race was changed just six weeks before the race due to a delayed start to the rainy season resulting in water levels being too low at the RCAT Training centre in Rayong. This resulted in the race being located to the rustic but beautiful Marb-Pra-Chan reservoir and this was where we found ourselves early on 21 August for the first day of 2000m racing. Surrounded by members of Team GB (who we had met for the first time when we arrived in Thailand to continue our training a week before) we now felt like one team. The juniors and U24s were training at separate times and staying in a slightly different location so it was good to finally meet them and awe inspiring to see that dragon boating is growing strongly amongst the younger generation back in the UK. It made me incredibly happy to unexpectedly find two of my old paddling buddies from Hong Kong, representing Switzerland in the tent adjacent to us. They were fiercely protecting their oversized cowbell good luck charm, which was apparently “liberated” by a team GB member at the previous Worlds in Kunming, China. Friends representing Australia, Hong Kong, USA and Spain also popped in regularly

throughout the week with wishes of good luck, encouraging words, and of stories about races. The camaraderie was great, perhaps even more so for the HK paddlers who felt as though they had friends on every team. Royal-X team Captain Gianni Aprea summed it up perfectly, “The USA paddlers are very confused as to how my kids have so many Aunts and Uncles from all over the world”

Rowing

The 2000m was the opening event for the World Championships. This race is always most challenging for the steers person as the race involves a staggered start and three sweeping turns. Despite the officials’ best efforts, these heats may result in clashes between teams as they try to overtake each other and maintain the inside line. The next day saw participants take on the tough straight-line 1000m race, where just paddling out to the start line can feel like a slog. Once the starters horn sounds, the adrenalin kicks in and you can’t imagine it’s same distance back to the finish line as paddles move in well-rehearsed synchronization and the sprays of water fly past. On the other end of the distance spectrum, the 200m race is this sport’s sprint event – blink and you might miss it as the race is over and done in under a minute. In this event, a milli-second timing difference between team-mates can be the difference between devastation or world championship glory.

RHKYC paddlers

Every race is important but the 500m is the premier distance piece, all teams strive to bring home the medal. It’s a race that demands the cleanest of starts, a powerful middle section and a strong finish. All these elements have to come together with militaristic precision for a win at these national levels. The last day of the event was the 500m piece for Open and Women’s teams. We all got to witness a little history in the making as China broke the world record for the Open category with a time of 1:47.823, breaking the previous record of 1:48.740 which had been held by the US since 2007. It was a truly superb way for the championships to finish. The celebrations began immediately after that historic final race with paddlers swapping race shirts and enjoying long awaited pints. The closing party continued well into the night with teams taking the stage with demonstrations to showcase their national heritage. Thailand put on an all-around great event and the Club’s contribution was readily apparent. Huge congratulations also go to RHKYC’s Gianni Aprea for bringing home five medals for Team USA.

2019 World Rowing Coastal Championships – Presented by Dah Sing Bank Rowing

An M-Mark Event | Row ‘n’ Rock | Race in the City! W O RD S: MIKE TA NNER, Past Rowing Captain, RHKYC; Chair, 2019 WRCC Organising Committee

t the closing date of entries for the 2019 World Rowing Coastal Championships, nearly 500 of the world’s top coastal rowers from 27 countries and regions had registered to compete in Hong Kong in early November for seven World Championship titles in Victoria Harbour. With the event base and athlete village located at Kellett Island, it promises to bring a unique international competition experience to the Club. The Organising Committee, the World Rowing Federation (FISA) and Presenting Sponsor Dah Sing Bank have all cooperated closely to bring this M-Mark event to fruition. The high entry numbers have well justified the initiative to bring the Championships to Hong Kong. Of the seven events, the highest entries are in the Men’s Solo (45 crews), Men’s double sculls (42 crews) and the Mixed double sculls (39 crews). On the Women’s side, the biggest event is the double sculls, which has attracted 31 crews. The other events all have between 20 and 30 crews each. This will surely produce some very exciting racing! The Club location gives the event the necessary access to the Harbour. But the Organising Committee has worked to highlight not just the Club itself, but to present a broader perspective taking in the whole harbour and city landscape to bring the real feeling and heart of Hong Kong to the international competitors and to bring the event to the community. World Champ Square The physical link with the City kicked off in early October with the launch of “World Champ Square”, aiming to bring a series of exciting activities to the general public for a wonderful rowing weekend. This area between the Hong Kong Observation Wheel and Central Pier

9, includes installations related to the championships set up to raise public awareness, encourage photo opportunities and to create the link between the land, the harbour and the world championships. On the Sunday, the day of medal finals, World Champ Square will feature games and photo opportunities for the family, including a mini-concert. The HKOW area will be showing the races live on their big video screens with food and drinks available and a VIP area which will welcome guests to officiate at the Victory Ceremonies on Sunday afternoon. Food trucks will also serve the event around the waterfront. The objective of the Organisating Committee is to create a festival of rowing in a location where everyone can watch the racing right in front of them – spectators on Piers 9 and 10 will have wonderful views as the crews race towards them before turning around a buoy off Pier 10. In addition to the screens at HKOW, races can be streamed to smart phones. A number of public trial days during October have allowed people to have a taste of coastal rowing on the harbour. These community activities will be followed up by the Hong Kong, China Rowing Association in an ongoing programme to expand the experience of coastal rowing to the public in the harbour and other locations over the coming several years as an active legacy from the hosting of this event, something it regards as equally important to the success of the Championships themselves. Other activities for the public on the Central waterfront during the Championships include a VR experience linked to indoor rowing, where, through the magic of virtual reality, participants can row on an

ergometer while seeing themselves in a boat rowing along the Hong Kong waterfront. Pier 9 will host other rowing machine experiences – an “erg challenge” where the public can test their own strength and rowing technique in a 1 minute timed challenge and a rowing clinic where everyone can learn how to row.

In the final build-up to the Championships, the Organising Committee has focussed on how to provide the best experience for visiting rowers and supporters as well as on the involvement of the local community to ensure that there can be a lasting and genuine legacy for Hong Kong sport from this world rowing event in the heart of the city. For the experience of visiting teams, the hosting of the event in the Club, with its iconic location on the Harbour and its long history of supporting local, Asian and world rowing and sailing, means a great deal. To be able to race from Kellett Island will be a unique experience for many of the visiting rowers and one they will treasure as a life-long memory. The involvement of experienced Club volunteers will also help substantially to create great racing and competition conditions to a full World Championships standard. Live International Broadcast World Rowing Productions will supervise a full international television broadcast of racing on Saturday and Sunday to FISA partners worldwide. Hong Kong Island, Central, Wan Chai and the Peak will create a stunning backdrop to the rowing footage for viewers around the world. For those wanting to watch the racing there are many options – from the Club, which overlooks the start and finish lines; from boats on the water along the outside of the course; from the Wan Chai and Central waterfronts; from all buildings along the harbourfront; from the Wan Chai-Tsim Sha Tsui Star Ferry, with each race crossing the Star Ferry route twice; from the HKOW, which will give a very special bird’s-eye view over the whole course with World Champ Square in the foreground. Theme Song by sp’ACE In the true spirit of celebrating this historic occasion for Hong Kong Rowing, for the Harbour as an international water sports arena and for World Rowing, a special 2019 World Championships Theme Song is created by local band sp’ACE. The song connects to the Row‘n’Rock theme – Row to the Rhythm, Rock to the Beat – expressing the joy and pride of Hong Kong and taking this to the world level through all of the international teams competing here for this event. Listen for it in the Club!

RHKYC and Lanikai Canoe Club come together to race the Ka’iwi Channel W O RD S: ST EPH A NIE TOVO LI IM AGES: CHRISTIN A PA RK A ND MELIS S A DAVIS

Partnerships with the Hong Kong Maritime Museum and WWF (Hong Kong) have created the opportunity to organise theWWF’s Sea For Future exhibition in the Museum reflecting the long history of local rowing and its close links with the local maritime industry, as well as to support WWF’s crowdfunding project to reduce the use of plastic to save Hong Kong’s marine biodiversity. At an international level, FISA has a strategic clean-water partnership with WWF and there is a great relevance to bring this partnership also to a local level in Hong Kong. Free entry will be offered for all visitors to HKMM on the Saturday and Sunday of the event, 2 and 3 November.

OUTRIGGER CONTACT outrigger@rhkyc.org.hk

he opportunity came from a call we didn’t expect. The Lanikai Canoe Club out of Oahu, Hawaii was looking for a handful of female paddlers to put together one more crew to race the 41st edition of Na Wahine O Ke Kai on 22 September; the female edition of Molokai Hoe – the mythical Ka’iwi channel crossing between Molokai and Oahu. 10 women for 41 miles. 71 outrigger canoes on the starting line. The ‘super bowl of paddling’ they say. One of those challenges you take on without really thinking properly. And three women from the RHKYC Outrigger section said ‘yes’. A long flight to Honolulu. A couple of paddling sessions to blend and meet the crew, a short flight to Molokai, barely enough time to take it all in. Race day... 0400hrs and it all felt a bit unreal. Until the opening ceremony and the blessing. 700 women, three generations holding hands, gathered in celebration of the Hawaiian and paddling culture. The crossing was gruesome. Over eight hours on the water. 30 minutes in the canoe, 15 minutes in the support boat over eight hours on average for each paddler. The 15 minutes on the support boat were to hydrate, eat, rest and jump back in. And finally after a day worth of work and effort – Diamond Head, Waikiki beach and the finish line. It was long and it was a hard year the locals said. And we did not disagree. It was not so much the waves this year but the water current running against us. It was a unique learning experience. Us three ‘channel virgins’ crossing with such an experienced and respected club as Lanikai. And thinking this is what it looks like to race alongside world class paddlers. And thinking that next time, it’s a full RHKYC Outrigger crew that should cross the finish line of Na Wahine O Ke Kai.

The Official Opening Ceremony is on 30 October at the HKOW and the Medal Ceremonies and Closing Ceremony will take place at the same location on the evening of 3 November. Club members are encouraged to be a part of the event whether as spectators, participants, friends of visitors or any other way. Enjoy the World Rowing Coastal Championships and celebrate with us! Hong Kong Coastal Rowing Championship W O RD S: CHRIS D E KO CK | IM AGES: HKC R A | A NN A FISHER

Rowing

he national Championship event held on 29 September at Kellet Island on the harbour waters saw some spectacular results from the RHKYC coastal rowing team. Sunday’s course distance 4km had the athletes beginning the races out on the waters directly in front of the Club, racing toward the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre with the turning point just before Central Pier 10. Coastal racing, unlike the more common fine boat racing, has no lanes with multiple markers that the crews are to navigate around in the correct manner or risk time penalties, all of this resulting in some extremely exciting racing for athletes and spectators alike.

Medal Ceremony Coastal 4x+

Coastal rowing requires a significantly large amount of steering coupled with sustained power in order to complete the course. With the upcoming World Coastal Rowing Championships on the horizon this was a brilliant opportunity for the competitors to get a fresh look at the planned course for the world champs while having some tough competition. The SeaBin Marine

Sponsored by Wärtsilä, a global leader in smart technologies and complete lifecycle solutions for the marine and energy markets, the Club recently installed a SeaBin at Shelter Cove. The Seabin is a floating rubbish bin that is located in the water at marinas, docks, yacht clubs and commercial ports, collecting all floating rubbish. Water is sucked in from the surface and passes through the catch bag filter inside the Seabin. The water is then pumped back into the marina leaving litter and debris trapped in the catch bag to be disposed of properly. The Seabin also has the potential to collect a percentage of oils and pollutants floating on the water surface.

The SeaBin has a removable inner basked which collects the rubbish

When the South West monsoon is blowing a lot of marine rubbish collects in the corner of Shelter Cove Marina between the gangway and the steps. The SeaBin has been placed in this area and is emptied daily

Records are kept of the type of rubbish collected, how much is collected and how much recyclable items there are. Recyclable items are them placed in the correct bins

Gaja Gaja is one of the best-known wine producers in all of Italy. Originating in and still based in Barbaresco, in northwest Italy, the Gaja name remains most strongly associated with Nebbiolo-based wines, though the company now makes more wine in Tuscany than Piedmont. The business was founded in 1859 by Giovanni Gaja with just two hectares of vineyards in Barbaresco. Since then, five generations of Gajas have been producing wines in Piedmont’s Langhe hills. In 1970, Angelo Gaja took over the family business. Angelo Gaja is often credited with the estate’s more recent success. Today, Gaja is one of the Italy’s outstanding and most influential wine producers and the stars of the world wine scene. Gaja is widely credited with transforming not just the image and international reputation of its native Piedmont region, but of Italy as a whole. It has had a significant impact on the way that Italian wine is grown, made, priced, distributed and marketed. Gaja is one of a handful of fine wine brands that can compete with and charge the same prices as the top names of Burgundy and Bordeaux.

A legendary winery founded in 1685 Boschendal lies between two renowned wine regions; the Simonsberg and Drakenstein mountains in Africa. The name Bos-en-dal, literally “Bossendaal” (wood and dale) farm, is one of the oldest wine producers in the New World. The land was originally granted in 1685 to the French Huguenot émigré, Jean Le Long. In 1715 the property was purchased by fellow Huguenots, the De Villiers brothers. The elegant Manor House, an outstanding example of Cape Dutch architecture, was built in 1812. After remaining in the De Villiers family for 164 years, the farm was sold to a Dutch farmer, D J Retief. After the disastrous phylloxera plague of 1896 destroyed the vineyards in the area, Prime Minister of the Cape Colony and South African visionary, Cecil John Rhodes, purchased the property in partnership with De Beers and set about restoring it to its former glory. Until recently the farm was part of the Anglo American Farms Limited portfolio. Proud new owners, DGB (Pty) Ltd, took over the reins in 2005. As custodians of such a rich and distinguished heritage, DGB is committed to ensuring Boschendal’s place as one of the great wine estates of the world.

Domaine Génot-Boulanger Wine Dinner Gun Room | Thursday 28 November A Kellett Wine Society styled exclusive premium wine dinner experience with limited seats in the Gun Room is now open to all members. Domaine Génot-Boulanger began its history as the life-long dream of two Parisian pharmacists, Charles-Henri Génot and his wife Marie Boulanger, and was realised when they moved to Meursault and purchased the first vineyards in Mercurey in 1974. The later family generations concentrated on the quest for even more exceptional terroirs. In 1998, François Delaby inherited a total of 22 hectares of vineyards and 30 appellations spanning the Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune, and the Côte Chalonnaise. With the acquisition of vineyards in Puligny-Montrachet (among which the Premier Crus “La Garenne” and “Les Folatières”) François Delaby continued the family endeavor for ten years, until his daughter, Aude, and son-in-law, Guillaume Lavollée joined him at the helm. In 2008, Aude and Guillaume Lavollée took the challenge to continue the family pursuit, and were clear on their mission from the off – to produce wines that express the complexity and finesse of their great Burgundian terroirs – recognising the quality of the vineyard to be the most important factor to get right. So they began their tenure by concentrating on viticulture and the health of the soil, starting conversion to organic farming – a process that ended with full certification in 2018.
