Commodore’s Message
The Bridge
The St. James’s Sunset Series concluded on 23 August after 12 weeks of fantastic racing. We had a record turnout with 36 boats on the start line, all eager to get racing, perhaps too eager as we needed two General Recalls to get them away! What a final race of the Summer it was though, with a fabulous after party, thanks to our generous sponsors. A full report appears on page 14. The Autumn Regatta was held over the weekend of 7 and 8 September 會長胡祖榮 and incorporated a celebration of 170 years of club-organised racing in Victoria Harbour. Race 1 of the Regatta was named the 170 th Anniversary Hong Kong Harbour Charity Race, and I am happy to report that our generous members raised $35,910 for the RHKYC Charity Foundation, which is fantastic and will help the Club to continue its charity programme. For the event itself, it was touch and go whether we could actually go racing on the Sunday due low winds, but kudos to the race management team who squeezed a race in. It was unfortunate the second race of the day had to be abandoned for all except Big Boat 1 but no disappointed sailors could be seen at the prizegiving celebration afterwards. My thanks to all and congratulations to everyone who took part in the Regatta, and particularly to those who won their divisions. A write-up of the Autumn Regatta will appear in next month’s Ahoy! Commodore John Woo
please do join the dinner and if you fancy parking your car in this VIP location, get bidding. We are not just focusing on funding our own volunteer programmes, the Club’s Charity Foundation programmes, but we have been busy with more community outreach events which have been hosted over the past month. Following on from the sail training events organised by the Bayview Hong Kong Chapter of the Lions Club for under privileged children from the Northern New Territories District, we have had students from Yan Chai Hospital Schools enjoying sailing classes at Middle Island in August and we have also completed the RHKYC Charity Foundation’s Smart Kids Swimming Programme which is run with the Aberdeen Kai Fong Association. It is so rewarding to see how the Club can enhance the lives of children in a positive way and also how our staff and volunteer members work together to support the Club’s charity programmes. Looking ahead we have the China Coast Race Week 2019; this comprises the 27th China Coast Regatta from 11 to 13 October and the 9th Hong Kong to Vietnam Race which will start on 15 and 16 October. Competing yachts can expect the best of Hong Kong’s sailing conditions; excellent breeze, blue skies, warm friendly waters and great parties. It’s incredibly exciting that we have, for the first time, two racing trimarans, Maserati Multi70 and the 60ft SHK Scallywag/FUKU, leading the line-up for this bi-annual Category 1 Offshore Race to Vietnam. Looking beyond China Coast Race week, our Outrigger Canoe section will have their Around Lamma Race on 19 October. Lastly, the 2019 World Rowing Coastal Championships are being held here in Hong Kong in the Victoria Harbour waterfront from 1 to 3 November. There’s a great article in this issue of Ahoy! to tell you more (see page 28).
By the way, the charity programme to celebrate our 170 th Anniversary sailing in the harbour does not just stop there. We will also have a charity gala dinner on Saturday 26 October. As one of the prizes of offer, I will be auctioning the Commodore’s designated parking spot at Kellett Island for the remainder of my time as Commodore. So
Looking forward to seeing you making great use of the Club, now that you are all back from summer vacation and as the temperature starts to cool down, don’t forget to come to the Club and enjoy the magnificent views of Hong Kong harbour at lunch and dinner, and of course our Thursday and Friday music nights on the Main Deck.

General Manager’s Message
The Bridge
How time flies by! No sooner have we welcomed everyone back from the summer, and the sporting season has begun again in earnest, before we need to finalise plans through to the end of the year, and I am afraid that that means that the word ‘Christmas’ appears in this issue. But before then, we have October to tell you about! Club celebrations to mark 170 years since the first club-organised regatta in Hong Kong Harbour continue throughout General Manager Mark Bovaird 總經理布馬克 the month, having been kicked off with Race 1 of the Autumn Regatta. The Food and Beverage team have a wide range of fantastic value offers for you, all themed around the 170 years, culminating on Saturday 26 October in a black tie gala dinner dance in aid of the Club’s Charity Foundation. There will be some unique auction prizes on offer too that night and full details of the event can be found on page 41. We also have three wine dinners this month; the first on 3 October is hosted by Deep Woods Estate out of Margaret River, Australia, which has become the biggest producer of Rosé in Western Australia, as well as arguably Australia’s best and most consistent producer of Cabernet Sauvignon. A couple of weeks later on 17 October, we have the Tuscany Wine Dinner which will highlight several wines from one of the most famous and much loved wine regions in Europe. Lastly, on 25 October we welcome François Thienpont to the Club to share some wonderful

examples of wines from his family’s extensive network of wineries from arguably THE most famous wine region in Europe – Bordeaux. There is so much to keep you occupied here throughout October – actually there is something every single day! – including a Halloween Party for the entire family on 26 October. Best of luck to everyone taking part in China Coast Race Week comprising the China Coast Regatta and the Hong Kong to Vietnam Race; the later will surely be exciting with two racing trimarans on the start line! If the winds are in their favour, a new race record will certainly be up for grabs. We will shortly be changing our Car Park entry system at Kellett Island. The new RFID technology will allow automatic entry for registered cars and motorbikes and you will no longer need to raise the barrier by swiping your membership card. A great improvement for the rainy season! The Membership Office will shortly be contacting those members with existing car park passes to change over to the new system. Whilst we have been pretty fortunate thus far this summer with very few typhoons affecting Hong Kong, the T8 on 31 July interrupted the retirement celebration for the Club’s resident Pianist, Avelino Castillo. Avelino had been entertaining members and their guests for nineteen and a half years in the Compass Room and we planned to present his retirement gift on the restaurant that night. As an alternative the Commodore and I presented him with a gift at the Club’s reception and a number of members organised for Avelino to come back for dinner as their guest the following week, and of course, Avelino played a few favourite songs for old time’s sake. We wish Avelino a long, happy and healthy retirement. We look forward to seeing you making the most out of everything that we have going on at the Club this month.
Introductory Membership Scheme The Club has implemented a new introductory membership scheme aimed at prospective members who are interested in in the Club’s programmes and facilities but are uncertain about joining the Club. The scheme provides prospective applicants for membership a one-time opportunity to experience for nine months the benefits of membership without incurring entrance fees. The scheme is also designed to enhance prospective applicants’ ability to meet the Ordinary membership admission criteria. Participants will pay higher monthly subscription fees. The scheme provides for a streamlined application process, requiring only one qualified sponsor. The key requirement is that candidates demonstrate a genuine and strong interest in pursuing the Club’s core sports activities. All applications will be considered by Membership Committee, which may require a candidate interview. Each scheme participant will be paired with a member of the Club who will act as a mentor and introduce him or her to the sailing or rowing activities at the Club. Participants will be encouraged to apply for ordinary membership upon completion of their scheme period. Full details of the application procedures are available on the Club’s website https://www.rhkyc.org.hk/introductoryschemecard.aspx and also at the Membership Office. Mark Yeadon

English Book Reading for Underprivileged Children 2019 The Bridge
our sail boats, after a delicious lunch in the Regatta Room. Their last stop was the Bowling Alley (Sports Bar) where to most of the underprivileged children, it was the first time they touch a real bowling ball. There was indeed a real bowling competition and four children won a bowling-shaped cake. It was a rewarding day for everyone! Yes, there is a lot of work involved in the English Book Reading Programme because every single item is administered by our Member volunteers without any professional assistance from a third party. But it is meaningful! Whether we can continue to run this programme next year really depends on your support and help. So watch out for the advertisement “WANTED: BOOK READERS” in 2020.
earning a new language is boring, right? Wrong! And especially not if you are one of the 24 underprivileged children who attended the nine sessions in the RHKYC Charity foundations programme, English Book Reading for Underprivileged Children this past summer. This is the second time the Charity Foundation has offered this programme to deprived children from poor districts in West Kowloon. The first was launched back in July 2018. Unlike the conventional academic syllabus offered by schools, the Charity Foundation’s Book Reading Programme does not teach English; we only motivate children to learn. Themed by a different English book in each session, the programme aims to create an environment where children can subtly listen and speak English with confidence. From painting to worksheets; from musical chair to role playing; from making a ginger bread to crafting a rocket; from playing words bingo to creating a paper fan for their parents; the entire programme is sketched with fun. And through that, it delivers results applauded by the children, their parents and our NGO partner, Principal Chan Free Tutorial World.
Here, the Charity Foundation would like to give a big thanks to the management and staff of RHKYC, and all of our 44 member volunteers and their children who have devoted a total of over 350 hours to help the beneficiaries. Of course, special gratitude has to be given to the launcher of this programme in 2018, Wendy Lee, and our fuve Session Leaders in 2019 namely Joanne Grainger, Michelle Ho, Olivia Ng, Sarah Powell and Sandy Tran. Also to Jessica Lim for preparing all the printed materials for each session. 14 September was the last class as well as the Graduation Ceremony and Party. And we invited all parents to join both the class and the party. A quick slide show was broadcasted immediately after the last class. Then, for the first time, these young children put on their graduation gown and received the Graduation Certificate jointly signed by both the Chairmen of RHKYC Charity Foundation and Principal Chan Free Tutorial World. Fully covered by excitement and smile, the children and their parents went for a tour of the Club, including

The Bridge he RHKYC Charity Foundation held its annual 7th Charity Sailing and Paddling Day at Middle Island on 4 August as part of the Club’s continuous support for the Government’s Sports for All Day. Despite days of rains and thunderstorms as well as the 2019 season’s first typhoon 8 earlier in that week, the weather cleared and although there were some raindrops in the morning, the overcast skies provided some much required respite against the summer heat. This year, 44 keen participants joined to experience water sports, in particular, dragon boating and sailing. The youth came from Aberdeen Kai-Fong Welfare Association, Home Affairs Department

Wanchai District, Hong Kong Christian Service, InspiringHK Sports Foundation, Pui Tak Canossian College and SHK Li Fook Hing Secondary School. To make this a success, the Royal X Dragon Boat Team and the J/80 Team had about 50 volunteers running the day’s jam packed programme. The day started with a brief history of dragon boating and how it has developed to become an international sport. The students were asked to pay particular attention, as at the end of the session there would be a quiz with prizes. The students were then divided into three teams and each time had coaching volunteers who would coach, demonstrate, drum, and steer the boats. The coaching volunteers had the responsibility to ensure that their teams learned

stroke techniques, synchronisation, race calls and above all the ability to listen and work together as a team. The students were also given a briefing on water safety tips. A sense of competition was established by the coaches immediately. All three teams got organised very quickly. Seating arrangements were finalised and the coaches launched into warm-ups straight away, with one of the teams enthusiastically debating what their team name should be. Stoke technique coaching varied for each team. Team 2 decided to spend a little more time on land to demonstrate stroke technique whereas Teams 1 and 3 demonstrated stroke technique in the water. On water training focused on timing, rotation, getting the A-frame right, start and race pieces. Each team spent about twenty minutes training and then it was time for the first race of the day. The hour on the water went by extremely quickly as the teams enthusiastically raced each other up and down the Middle Island channel. The session ended with a nice and light paddle back to the pontoons. Teams were tasked to get their boats out of the water and place them securely in their racks, wash the paddles and ensure all equipment was put back in the right place. To end the session, we did a little quiz and it was great fun to witness the enthusiasm from the students in answer the questions and showing the volunteers what they learnt from the day. It was such a rewarding experience for both the volunteers and the students to be able to spend the morning together learning the spirit of teamwork and camaraderie in the racing of dragon boats.
and gathered to watch an environmental video to learn about the impact of plastic on the oceans and marine life. RHKYC Sailing Instructor Kelvin Lau then introduced the youth to the basics of sailing. The group then took to a fleet of 13 J/80s, which were generously lent by their owners for the afternoon. The wind was light but steady and the conditions were excellent for the youth to experience sailing for the first time, and learn the fundamentals. The fleet had a short race around Repulse Bay and several of the keen students were encouraged to take the helm under the guidance of the instructors on board. The day concluded with a presentation of certificates, souvenirs and prizes by
Commodore John Woo. Although everyone worked hard under the heat, and were exhausted by the end of the day, the students had a wonderful time, with many smiles and laughs all around. It was the first time the youth could experience dragon boating and sailing, and hopefully it will just be the start of more adventures on water. The students and teachers greatly appreciated the efforts of the RHKYC Charity Foundation in making the introduction to water sports. The RHKYC Charity Foundation extends a sincerest ‘Thank You’ to all the staff and volunteers of the RHKYC, in making the 2019 Charity Sailing and Paddling Day a great success. We look forward to continuing the Charity Sailing and Paddling Day tradition in 2020!

his year’s record breaking St James’s Place Sunset Series will go down in the books with a record of firsts! The first time to see two general recalls … only to culminate in BLACK! The first time EVER the St James’s Place Sunset Series has seen a Black Flag start! Competition was hot – what a summer of sailing! With racing held over 12 weeks of summer – June through to August, the widely popular event saw sailors from all classes including the Big Boats, turn out for this growing popular way to usher in the weekend. KK Lee, prominent Impala sailor and the sixth place getter overall in the 2019 series, commented “… it really makes me happy to come to sail at the Club on a Friday night, we are so fortunate to enjoy the beautiful view and the great sailing. Over the 12 week regatta, the series saw 11 different winners up on stage to collect a range of sponsor supported prizes. The series was again run like clockwork under the watchful eyes of the ever present Judy Roberts – Race Officer for 10 races and Emmanuel Pitsilis – Race Officer for seven races and their band of happy helpers. Under the stunning backdrop of Victoria Harbour sunset skies and the gentle breezes, the St James’s Place Sunset Series has again proved to be an outstanding success and one of the most consistently attended races of the year. And to back up a great event, CEO of St James’s Place, Mr. Ian Burns has announced St James’s Place will continue to support sailing and the St James’s Place Sunset Series for another year. Congratulations to all the sailors and a shout out of thanks to the race management team for yet another great summer season of sailing! See you all again on the start line in 2020! Great Lakes and Summertime in Northern Michigan W O RD S: JA MES LID BURY | IM AGES:

ome of our fellow members escaped Hong Kong’s long hot summer to do some sailing on the other side of the world in a landscape of cool clear waters shaped by glaciers. North America’s Great Lakes; Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie and Ontario, collectively hold one-fifth of the fresh surface water on Earth and span 750 miles from west to east. They were carved out by retreating glaciers 14,000 years ago. Emphasizing just how recently that was in geologic terms, for about 1% of that time members of our reciprocal clubs, the Chicago Yacht Club and the Royal Canadian Yacht Club, each, like RHKYC, with mid-19th century origins, have been sailing them.

race, but Zen’s unexpectedly small reaching spinnaker was not the tool for the job and we watched the fleet slowly catch and then overtake us in the first hour of light breeze from the southwest. The pre-race weather briefing suggested a bold gamble to stay west, which adds distance, and try to play the lake breeze/shore breeze all the way up the Wisconsin side before turning for the west to east crossing late on the second day, when a passing front was expected to bring heavier winds out of the west. That looked risky. First, two big holes of dead air were expected to form over the western half and the eastern half of the lake on the evening of the first day. The “stay west” strategy depended on being on the northern edge of that, which looked like a bad bet for Zen and her undersized spinnaker.
The Chicago Yacht Club’s Race to Mackinac Island, known as the “Mac,” is the oldest annual fresh water distance race in the world and attracts several hundred boats and over 3,000 sailors every year. The first Mac was run by CYC in 1898 and it has been run annually without interruption since 1921. It begins off the Chicago Harbor Lighthouse, crosses Lake Michigan from west to east and south to north, goes through the Straits of Mackinac, under the “Mighty Mac” Mackinac Straits Bridge, an 8 km suspension bridge spanning the passage between Lakes Michigan and Huron, and finishes in a narrow channel off Lake Huron’s Mackinac Island in the State of Michigan. The total direct distance is 333 miles. For this year’s 111th running of the race your correspondent, a native Chicagoan, chartered a C&C110 called Zen and sailed the race with fellow RHKYC members Jason Huntsman, Tim Lucas and Anthony Ngai and three US-based crew. Zen is a tidy well-built cruiser-racer, but she isn’t especially optimised for speed, and Team Zen only ever led her fleet for the first minutes after the downwind start. We had put a new main and #3 jib on her for the

We also had ringing in our ears the wizened advice we’d collected at the bar over the course of the preceding week telling us that it almost never pays to go west and we should resist the urge to go outside (west) of the Manitou Passage along eastern shore in the northern stretches of the lake. When we saw our fleet pulling ahead and steering straight north along the western shore, we figured follow the leader wasn’t likely to pay. And that’s how another idea grabbed us. The weather models showed a narrow bridge of moderate wind dividing the two big holes predicted on either side of the lake for that first night. If we edged the fleet to the east, toward the center of the 70-mile wide lake, we might find a bit of wind while the rest of the fleet stalled and, if we didn’t cross the rhumb line, we wouldn’t give up any distance in the bargain. So we set Zen on a north northeast course and started putting the fleet to our west. That evening, it began to look like it might work. We stayed in a bit of breeze as the sun went down. So far, so good. But by dawn the second day the wind was down to a whisper. We made slow progress throughout that day while being eaten alive by the biting black flies that feed on the blood of fresh water sailors when the sun is warm and the wind is low. By evening we were no longer alone out along the rhumb line, but we feared that the boats we couldn’t see had probably gotten north of us by now. We spent that day out of cellular coverage, so we only had conjecture and some aging weather forecasts to work with. The second night passed quietly, as we made our way north and edged closer to the eastern shore aiming for the approaches to the Manitou Passage. A fun historical note, Manitou was the name of John F. Kennedy’s presidential yacht, a 62-foot Sparkman & Stephens design built in 1937 specifically to win the Mac, which it promptly did in 1938. Somewhere in the pre-dawn hours we finally came close enough to the Michigan side that we picked up spotty cellular coverage. With the first usable signal we went for a weather update and … uh oh! A massive line of powerful storm cells had formed up to our west and was charging directly at us. The duty watch called all hands on deck and we got to work shortening sail, donning foulies, and checking our safety gear. As the first dim light rose in the east it illuminated a wall of clouds to our west, with a menacing anvil rising in the center. The sky began to crack with electricity, so two crew stayed on deck to steer and the rest were sent below. One after another storm cell passed over us, finally clearing to show the sun was fully up and the freshening west southwest breeze that had been forecast for the northern stretches of the race was finally upon us. We shot the Manitou passage under spinnaker late that day, edged by some more thunderstorms that evening and navigated Grays Reef shoals in the pitch dark late that night. Past the shoals it’s a hard right turn and 17nm due east down the narrow Mackinac Straits to the bridge. We ran the whole length of the straits downwind in the dead of a cloudblack night in 20+ knots of wind, all hands on deck. Past the bridge, it was still blowing heavy and still too dark to see anything but navigation lights. Is that the finish line? No, I think it might be that over there. No, you were right the first time! Jibe past the shoal marker, then one more time into the channel toward the finish and then, out of the black night, a blinding strobe from the race committee ashore, and … we did it! Zen didn’t bring home any silver, but we finished second of the three C&C110s in the race, so, good enough for a bunch of Mac rookies. The rising sun found us smiling and satisfied on charming Mackinac Island in Lake Huron. On this enchanted little isle, far, far away, there are no cars, only horses and carriages and bicycles, but plenty of good food, drink, and, for a few days in July, several thousand happy sailors, some of them from as far away as Hong Kong.

n more favourable conditions than first forecast, eight teams turned out to compete for the RHKYC’s overall Class Champion of all the champions for the 2018-19 season, on Saturday 31 August on the waters of Repulse Bay. Skippers and their crews having qualified for the event as the current Class Champion (or runner up) were randomly paired up to team race against another randomly paired Class Champions team. Teams are regrouped after every race and receive 1 point for a win and 0 points for loss, with the individual Class Skipper’s aim being to achieve the most team wins, in order to take out the ultimate prize and be crowned the Champion of all Champions! the thrills and spills of team racing …. with the occasional spot of swimming thrown in to the mix as well! Sailed in the clubs RS Quests without spinnakers, racing got underway just after 1100hrs, under the expert leadership of team racing specialists, Race Officers, Elberti Uiterwaal Postma and Bonnie Cheng with support from Jamie Boag as Chief Umpire, David Fan and Alain Choi as course umpires. Teams quickly got in to the swing of the team racing spirit, spurred on by a very informative seminar run by team racing expert Jamie Boag the evening prior to the event. The Sharks Youth Team this year saw a change of guard with Stan Picard and Malik Hood tasked to defend the title as held for the past 2 years by the Sharks team racers Thornwen Uiterwaal and Enzo Cremers, as Champion of

Champions. However their in-tune team racing tactics and superb boating handling skills were quite a match for the other more seasoned sailors to take on. The young guns were generous with sharing their team racing strategy with their paired teammates, heard communicating well across the water-loudly and often! Whilst also encouraging their teammates on for a race win, they displayed a wonderful camaraderie and sportsmanship, something the regatta is well known for and enjoyed by all attending sailors. In the end, a ding dong battle ensued with the top 4 teams of the Sharks, Sportsboat, Etchells and Impala battling it out in the last 4
races of the day, to decide the overall winner. The Sharks Youth Team pulling out all stops in order to hold out the opposition, so their teammates could sail into to more favourable position to achieve the winning score line, whilst the umpires were kept busy with their whistle and waving flags, issuing multiple penalty turns. A full display of tactical team racing was in action, down to the wire. In the end, the Sharks Youth team were too hard to beat having executed the perfect scorecard for the event, with 100% of the wins and taking out the title of Champion of
Champions for the third year running. The well sailed Sportsboat Team came in second and the Impala team took out third place overall. After a fantastic session out on the water, all the sailors and the race management team joined the prize giving at the Middle Island Clubhouse to congratulate and crown the Sharks Youth Team as the season 2018- 2019 Champion of Champions. A fabulous day, greatly enjoyed by all those who took part and who are now all looking forward to competing in the new Inter-class team racing festival in May 2020!
Thanks goes out to all our great troop of volunteers: Elberti Uiterwaal Postma, Bonnie Cheng, Jamie Boag, David Fan, Alain Choi, Felix Ng, Adrian Li and Anouar Kabbaj.

he Hong Kong RHKYC 29er Team went to Poland, Gdynia the World Championships which took place from 26 July to 3 August. This was our first year together to compete internationally in 29ers. The teams that went this year are Maddalena Di Salvo, Ulysse Ha Thuc, Adam Neveux, Matteo Przyszczykowski. The entire experience was very new to us. The competition would last for six days in total — three for qualifications and three for the final series. We would be competing with another 175 boats. I was feeling very nervous at the beginning but I progressively became more confident with myself. When we first arrived in Gdynia, we weren’t sure what to expect. The Hong Kong 29er community is tiny, and our team lacked experience in comparison to other 29er communities. Regardless, we were excited and kept our heads up for the regatta. Unfortunately, we ended up having several low points. I ended up sick

and the other crew, Matteo, struck his head on the mast and ended up getting stitches. I tried not to let my sickness affect my performance in the regatta, but I was too weak to sail on the last day of qualifications and ended up resting. Adam Neveux, Matteo’s helm, managed to find
Although some may think our experience in this competition was terrible because of the changes within our team, we still enjoyed the event immensely. For the next season, I aim to train even harder and be more committed to this sport. We all look forward to the upcoming world championships. “Yesterday is not ours to recover, but tomorrow is ours to win or lose.” – Former US President Lyndon Johnson Adam: This year, as an end to the training season, the Sharks 29er team coached by Daniel Dolega participated in the class’ World Championships held in Gdynia, a Polish coastal city overlooking the Baltic Sea. We could not have participated in this competition without RHKYC’s generous funding, and we are sincerely thankful for their contribution. I would also like to thank Louisa Di Salvo for taking great care of us during the Worlds, and Daniel for both coaching us and handling Matteo and Maddy when they were either wounded or sick.
This competition involved 175 29ers from all over the world, and was run over 8 days: The first two were dedicated to registration and measurements, while the other six were divided into two parts. Firstly, we sailed three qualifying days in which we competed in flights against 44 other boats of all levels to be entered into four different fleets – Gold, Silver, Bronze, and Emerald. Next came the final series, where we would battle it out to see who would emerge at the top of each fleet. Very sadly, in the days before the competition, we pitchpoled and Matteo opened his head against the mast. Daniel rushed him to the hospital, and the next time I saw him he had 30 stitches, so he was unable to sail for the next month. I’m really relieved to say that Matteo shouldn’t have any further repercussions because of the incident. Somehow, Daniel managed to find a crew that I could sail the Worlds with, Jette, from Germany. We raced in challenging conditions during the qualifications, racing badly and finding ourselves in emerald fleet along with Ulysse and Maddy. During the final series, Jette and I started to sail better together, culminating to the final day where we sailed a 6th place, in which we were sadly disqualified for being over the line, and a 9th that we were very happy about. Altogether this regatta, above all the hardships we faced, was successful in that we came out of it as better sailors than we started as. After the next season, we’ll make sure we come prepared.
420 Junior European Championship W O RD S: ELOI D EF LINE A ND T HIB AULT MINNE | IM AGE: C O DIG O CERO S AIL EQ UIPMEN T
rom the 23 to 30 July, four RHKYC sailors together with the Club’s Head Racing Coach, Christos Atzemian and team leader Segolene Defline participated in the 2019 420 Junior European Championship in Spain. After a couple flight issues, the entire team arrived together on the 21st at the event in Vilagarcía de Arousa, Galicia. The regatta was held at Vilagarcía de Arousa, Galicia and we first spent two days training on the water alone or with other teams, in particular the Greek. The first official racing day was 25 July and we were all looking forward to it. The first three days of racing were the qualifying series and the goal was to get into the Gold fleet. Both teams had some great results for few races. However the difficult conditions led to a few average races and a couple of incidents (BFD, DSQ after a crash) which resulted in the teams coming in at 48th and 51st and, with a cut off at the 46th place, this meant both teams were then in the Silver fleet. The objective then was to do as well as we could. For the next two days both teams
played at the top of the fleet and enjoyed it very much. The racing fell short on the last day because of a lack of wind. We (Eloi Defline and Thibault Minne) ended up 56th and Duncan Gregor and Matthew Clark were 54th out of 92 teams. To sum up, everyone – from the sailors to the coach (it was the first 420 regatta as a coach for Christos) enjoyed this event very much and used it as an amazing experience for the future. It was such a learning journey for all of
us to be on the water with the best 420 teams ! Finally we would like to thank the RHKYC, our families and friends for their incredible support. Without them we could not have experienced such a great summer. We would especially want to thank our coach Christos for helping us in Spain – it wouldn’t have been the same without him. He has been coaching us for the last three and a half years and has been such an inspiration for all of us. Thank you all! OCTOBER 2019 AHOY! |

a spare crew just on time. Everyone pushed out a lot of effort in this competition, and both teams competed in the emerald fleet. Through these series of unfortunate events, we gathered our misfortunes and shaped them as our experience instead. Our coach, Daniel Dolega, helped us a lot and gave us handy tips throughout the event. He acted as our mentor and encouraged us no matter our results. Ulysse Ha Thuc and I managed to finish off the competition with a satisfying second place in the last race.
2019 World Rowing Coastal Championships – Row ‘n’ Rock For Rowers | For the Community W O RD S: MIKE TA NNER, Past Rowing Captain, RHKYC, Chair, 2019 WRCC Organising Committee
Sailing 2019 WRCC – Let’s Row ‘n’ Rock
he 2019 World Rowing Coastal Championships (WRCC), organised by the Hong Kong, China Rowing Association and scheduled for 1, 2 and 3 November, will mark the first time in its history that the Club has played host to an M-Mark event.
Rock to the beat – the heart-beat of the City of Hong Kong = “Pride” – pride in Hong Kong’s progress since its harbour first became an international trading port in the days of sailing ships to everything this modern city represents today.
The final count-down began on 17 September with a Press Conference, held in the Club’s Regatta Room, to officially launch the event to the media. Officiating guests included Mr. Yeung Tak Keung JP, Commissioner for Sports, Mr. Karl Kwok BBS, MH, Chairman of the Major Sports Events Committee, Mr. Harold Wong, Managing Director and Chief Executive of Presenting Sponsor Dah Sing Bank and Mike Tanner, Chair of the 2019 WRCC Organising Committee.
In Hong Kong, people have a long-founded tradition of grasping the challenges and opportunities which are facing them and in cooperation with the pace and rhythm of the times have used these to develop Hong Kong into a proud metropolis – Asia’s World City.
The Press Conference was also officiated by Club Vice Commodore, Denis Martinet representing the RHKYC as the Venue & Delivery Partner and Legacy and Lead-up Partner for the Championships and by representatives of Official Partners The “Star” Ferry, the Hong Kong Maritime Museum and WWF (Hong Kong). Hong Kong Team rowers, Lee Ka Man and Lee Yuen Yin, sisters who raced in the WL2x at Rio Olympic Games and Chiu Hin Chun, who is targeting qualification for the coming Tokyo Olympics, were also present to share their experiences with the media.
In just the same way as Hong Kong has created its own success over these many years, coastal rowing is about rhythm and timing, about joy and pride, pursuing the excitement brought by the wind and waves – not by fighting against them but by rowing and engaging them through skill and timing to win the race. *Let’s Row ‘n’ Rock!* Linking Past and Present
Why “Row ‘n’ Rock” This tag line of “Row ‘n’ Rock” combines to represent “joy” and “pride”, reflecting Hong Kong’s success which comes in many ways from its famous Victoria Harbour, drawing together the connections between the sport of rowing and the spirit of Hong Kong and its harbour. Row to the music and the rhythm = the “Joy” of finding the perfect stroke within the crew and being at one with the sea and taming its forces.

challenge for coastal rowers from around the world. The RHKYC will continue to play an important role in such a project, providing the only current direct and permanent access to the central harbour for coastal rowing boats. Combined with its marine expertise and resources together with experienced volunteers, the Club will always be a valuable partner.
The welcome support of Presenting Sponsor Dah Sing Bank, has meant that the event can now be developed with this full spectrum of objectives so that it is not just a major race, but becomes an event which can have far reaching impacts on Hong Kong and the world.
From top: Open Crusie Regatta 1927; An RHKYC 8+ rowing along the line of the new breakway in Causeway Bay Typhoon Shelter in 1950s
The OC wants to bring all of this together to represent and display the real heart of Hong Kong through rowing in the harbour, but also to link past and present to preserve the connections which have made the city what it is today and which can be so easily forgotten in modern day Hong Kong. The first recorded rowing regatta in Victoria Harbour took place on 14 February, 1845 between crews of the Royal Navy’s Squadron in China. This regatta was followed in 1849 by the establishment of the Victoria Regatta Club (VRC) with a clubhouse located close to the present City Hall. Rowing continued under the VRC with an annual regatta which became a major sporting and social event. Although Club rowing moved to Middle Island in the late 1960s, the recent introduction of coastal rowing boat design, allowing boats to be rowed safely in open water conditions, has resulted not only in rowing being brought back to the harbour, but now in the highest world level of competition about to be held on our doorstep. M-Mark Status In applying for M-Mark status and funding, the Organising Committee (OC) had clear and broad objectives for the 2019 WRCC. When bidding to host this event in Hong Kong, the Hong Kong, China Rowing Association (HKCRA) wanted not just to organise a memorable and highly successful world championships for the participants and for FISA, but also to use the promotion and activities attached to the competition to raise the profile of rowing in Hong Kong and to encourage more people in the community to start rowing for health, fitness and enjoyment of our natural coastlines. It was also a key target to establish Hong Kong as a recognised Asian and world centre for coastal rowing by holding a major annual international coastal rowing event to continue to bring top world rowers back to the city and build on the experience of the WRCC. These are ambitious objectives, but they are very achievable. Hong Kong has the resources and the environment, combined with its always intriguing uniqueness in culture, history and geographic location, to become an iconic international rowing destination – a “must do”
The HKMM is an ideal partner with which to highlight the close links between Hong Kong’s rowing and maritime histories. Supported by a generous donation from The Tung Foundation, WRCC activities at HKMM will include an exhibition on the history of rowing in the harbour, a VR video experience which will allow visitors to visualise rowing past the changing coastline and cityscape of the harbour during the years of Hong Kong’s development. Open-air displays of rowing and connected maritime interests and photo opportunities will bring the event to the public in “World Championships Square” located between the Hong Kong Observation Wheel and Central Pier 10. And on Pier 10 itself, in addition to being able to test their own skills on rowing machines, spectators will be able to watch at first hand the crews negotiating the half-way turning buoy, directly below them, providing the all-important connection between land and water, as the WRCC action reaches into the very heart of Central. The other “natural” partner for the sport of rowing everywhere is the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). Rowing is a clean water sport, and rowers have a number of very good reasons to be part of the “Clean Water Movement”. Since 2011, the World Rowing federation, FISA, has had an important Strategic Alliance with WWF International and the WRCC OC is therefore very pleased to partner with WWF (Hong Kong) for these Championships, helping to highlight the value of clean water and in particular the critical impact which plastics are having on our seas. Activities will include an exhibition at HKMM and a crowd funding project to raise money for WWF’s work to promote reduction in the use of plastics. The WRCC itself will of course be doing everything possible to reduce its environmental footprint.

Engaging the Community Engaging the community is one of the key objectives of the HKCRA in hosting the WRCC and community activities will be generated as part of the related outreach and activation programmes in partnership with the Hong Kong Maritime Museum and WWF (Hong Kong).
Rowing From top: 1st Harbour Regatta, 2017 – RHKYC debuts the rowing race again in the Victoria Harbour after 40 years stop; 2nd Harbour Regatta
The Final Weeks The next few weeks will see final arrangements coming into place, culminating towards the end of October in a growing presence of rowing at Kellett Island. With the arrival of the 60 competition rowing boats scheduled for 27 October and World Rowing officials beginning to arrive on 28 October, closely followed by world rowers over the following 2 days, Club members will have the opportunity to observe first hand the build up and excitement surrounding this event. In addition to the rowing boats occupying the hard standing and all the activity going on around them, the live international television broadcast of the event will have a noticeable presence, with television cameras, including a drone camera, in strategic locations to catch the best of the racing action. An OB van will also be parked at the front of the Club to bring the signals to their final audiences around the world. This live broadcast will be an opportunity to highlight Hong Kong and the value of Victoria Harbour as an international water sports arena, but will also focus on the Club’s support for international rowing. *Let’s Row ‘n’ Rock!* All Club members are encouraged to enjoy the 2019 World Rowing Coastal Championships, whether as a volunteer, a spectator or just engaging participants in conversation to make them feel doubly welcome in Hong Kong and in the Club. FISA is considering proposals to include coastal rowing events in the 2024 Olympic Games. This will not be decided until the end of next year, but the Hong Kong event will surely be a factor in the necessary presentations to the IOC when the time comes. We are looking forward to a memorable and successful addition to the long history of rowing in the Club and in Hong Kong! We will see you there! our crew was taken by surprise with one of the paddlers actually in the ocean and not in the canoe when the horn sounded! way. Nevertheless, we were fine and happy as we were in Hawaii and we were feeling strong. The first hour of racing went by pretty quickly, with a lot of battles for race position taking place. We knew that only 17 of the 130 canoes were our direct competitors but had the mentality that we would give every crew we came into contact with a good battle to ensure the best possible outcome. The second hour of racing became more of a mental battle with the pack of canoes spread across the vast race course, we had to focus on keeping strong, keeping hydrated and trying to keep above a pre-determined minimum speed. The third and final hour of the race was absolutely the most challenging as the air temperature was rising and our energy was quickly fading away! However, with the pack of canoes now consolidating for the final couple of miles, this gave the crew a good stimulus and made sure that we left everything out on the race course! We finished with a time of 2:53:25 at a respectable 8th place in the Iron Mixed category and 93rd overall ahead of several men’s teams and men’s 9-man crews. Sunday morning, with possible sore heads, we lined up in Kona for the Wa’a Kaulua double hull race. Partnered from Bellingham Bay Outrigger Paddlers from Washington State, we raced a triangular course southward and back. Paddling timing, an integral ingredient in performing well in an outrigger canoe, is a trick with six paddlers who train regularly together, but adding an additional 6 can create havoc. Luckily we got it together for what was a close race over the whole course. We finished with a time of 00:33:30 and 9th place. Representing the Club at the Queen Lili’oukalani Canoe Race was (from seat one to steer): Lidia Garcia, Nicole Adair, Nick Crabb, Tony Mitchell, Bill Marr and Rae Strachan.
The Beast W O RD S: A L A N REID
After the carnage on the hard standing at Middle Island, caused by the swell over
running the hard standing during the passage of typhoon Mangkhut, a complete re-think was carried out about how, and where, sailing dinghies and RIB safety boats should be stored in stormy weather.
Due to the lease conditions on Middle Island, issued by the Government, the Club is not allowed to build on the hard standing area, and this includes proper storage racks for craft. With the possibility of another serious storm with high surge ever present the decision was made to alter the storage areas of the hard standing to make the craft stored on the hard stand less susceptible to wave damage. One of the decisions was to purchase a new fork lift truck so as to be able to lift craft on to the top of the containers, racks and up on to the balcony of the club house. The present forklift truck does not have the capacity or the lifting ability to raise the craft we have to these places. Various forklifts were examined and the use they could be put to at Middle Island. A small forklift similar to what we have at present was obviously not suitable so it had to be a larger model. If we were to purchase a larger model then it made sense to purchase a negative lift truck which will be able to pick up the craft and launch them to and from the water directly. There are several negative forklift trucks in use in Hong Kong, at Hebe Haven Yacht Club, Clearwater Bay Marina and Discovery Bay which members may have seen. The Club approached three manufacturers of trucks, Wiggins Lift, Travel Hoist and Neptune Hoist. After careful scrutiny of the available forklift trucks specifications and costs the Club chose to purchase a Wiggins Lift truck. The truck that we have purchased will be the smallest one in Hong Kong but will still be able to lift everything at Middle Island. Its use will be mainly to launch and retrieve the Clubs safety RIB’s but it will come into its own when we need to lift sailing boats, dragon boats and RIB’s up to the top of the racks and containers when stormy weather is expected. And just in case we do get another very powerful storm we will be constructing a raised concrete plinth for the truck to sit on. The forklift truck, due to its size, has already been christened as The Beast. Dependent on the shipping we hope to have The Beast operational by the end of October. Happy Lifting. Tuscany: The Pride of Italy Tuscany is one of the most famous and prolific wine regions anywhere in Europe, and the most-loved parts of Italy by wine aficionados worldwide. Grapes were first cultivated by the Etruscans nearly 3,000 years ago, grown in such wide abundance that they were often sold overseas and quickly became the area’s most trusted cash crop. Today, Tuscan vineyards produce an array of internationally recognised wines in various styles. These go far beyond the well-known reds like Sangiovese grape, and include dry whites and sweet wines both white and red. In fact, wine is produced in all ten of the region’s provinces. There are more than 70 DOCG wines in Italy, 11 of which are produced in Tuscany.

Since Camille Thienpont founded a wine trading company in Hof te Cattebeke in the Flemish Ardennes in 1842, the Thienpont family heritage has flourished. In 1921, Georges Thienpont established a foothold in the wine region by buying Château Troplong Mondot in Saint-Emilion. Vieux Château Certan was acquired in 1924 by Georges and became one of the jewels in the family’s crown. Every generation of Georges heirs including François, have helped to build their network among the vineyards of Bordeaux, and they now oversee twenty estates. Founded in 1995, Wings specialises in selling Bordeaux Grands Crus. Its position as a preferred allocation recipient makes it one of the key players on the Bordeaux marketplace. The family estates and wines bearing the François Thienpont signatures evoke their terroir and their vintage with the utmost integrity.
