Commodore’s Message
The Bridge
When I took over as Commodore, I was presented with a Flag. Unlike my previous Vice Commodore’s Flag, this new flag lacks a big ball. A big crystal ball! With the ups and downs we have experienced this year, it is nigh on impossible to predict what will happen. So let’s make the most of it. Let’s do what we do best: sailing, rowing and paddling and just in time for the start of the 2020-2021 season too! Long may this last. The first official regatta to kick off the sailing season was the Autumn Regatta held over the weekend of 12 and 13 September. This opening event attracted 101 boats and more than 550 sailors across seven one-design classes, Sportsboats and Big Boats. In my opening remarks, I had hoped that Aeolus, keeper of the Winds, would look kindly upon us and ensure we had breeze aplenty. Well yes, we did on day two. He must have had a glass of bubbly in hand! On the first day however Aeolus greeted all participants with a massive storm, bringing visibility down to almost nothing, punctuated by lightning flashes. The season started indeed with a bang! Commodore Denis Martinet

The China Coast Regatta will be held at Middle Island from 9 to 11 October with the inaugural China Coastal Race starting on Friday 16 October making up China Coast Race Week. China Coastal Race will be a Category 3 offshore race starting and finishing in Hong Kong waters. On a more disappointing note, the Youth America’s Cup was cancelled thanks to Covid-19. At the time, our young sailors from RHKYC Team Agiplast had just completed their first foiling competition at the Revolution Cup and had performed to a very high level indeed. Faced with stiff competition, they showed real skills and talent, medaling in the first Revolution Cup. The team’s achievements are demonstrating that given the right tools and support our very own sailors can not only acquit
themselves but perform at an international level. Upon their return to Hong Kong we plan to have members of RHKYC Team Agiplast slip into role models, encouraging and taking part in further competition among our shark sailors and other youths, thus perpetuating our youth development objective. Back to the Youth America’s Cup – where one door closes, another opens and we are currently very seriously looking at hosting a world class foiling event right here in Hong Kong. As soon as our plans firm up and we have lift off (on foils!) we’ll let you know. Marine has been conducting maintenance on Club boats during the non sailing period and we have replaced the mooring chains and shackles at Aberdeen. The new ramp for the Middle Island forklift has been completed so that when a severe typhoon threatens, the forklift can drive up the ramp on to the plinth seeking refuge well above any tidal surge. Our rowing and paddle sports members are training hard this month in preparation for key events taking place in October and November. The fine rowing squad will be putting final preparations in place for the Hong Kong Rowing Championships scheduled at the end of the month and both the coastal rowing and outrigger canoe teams will be training hard in preparation for the Around the Island Race taking place on 15 November. Social distancing measures permitted, we hope to be hosting the wildly popular Mussel Party this month as well as the Regatta Ball next month. Both the new Club exclusive Red and White ‘Boat Wine vgs’ have arrived to complement the Club’s exclusive Cuvee du Commodore which has proved very popular. And is now available in Magnum format too! A new initiative which we also hope will become popular is the Commodore’s Message video. Indeed, if you read the online version of Ahoy, you will be able to click and view it. Far from making me a movie star, or ‘YouTuber’, it aims to provide members with glimpses of people and places you may not know, and also relive some of our more memorable sporting moments. Carpe Diem.

General Manager’s Message

As for wine dinners this month, starting on 8 October and for three consecutive weeks we have a wine dinner in the Compass Room every Thursday evening. For the first one we are hosting the Bodegas Beronia Wine Dinner featuring wines from the famous Rioja region of Spain. The week after, back by popular demand, we have the M. Chapoutier Wine Dinner with wines that come with an exquisite pedigree from a winery
that has been in the same family for seven generations dating back to 1808. The third Thursday wine dinner celebrates the variety of wines available from France. We will feature wines from several wineries from wines from Bordeaux, Médoc and Sancerre paired with a fabulous menu. To end the month however, on 31 October we invite you to our Black Tie Champagne Dinner and Dance featuring Dom Pérignon. Live music will hopefully be back on the Main Deck soon in the form of Wendy Robin on Thursdays (government restrictions on live performances permitting). Our Club DJ, The Anello, is already back on Friday nights. Another massively successful event is being repeated on 23 October at Middle Island so if you missed out on the Seafood Fiesta a short while ago, you’ve got a second chance to join in the fun! Halloween too is at the end of the month and for once it falls on a weekend this year so there is no excuse not to bring the family down for some spooky fun. No Halloween party is complete without a Haunted House! We’ve also got balloon twisting and face painting. And of course a specially themed buffet. We look forward to seeing you all making the most of the Club and enjoying yourselves with friends and family, but do please remember to play your part too by complying with any and all of the anti-epidemic measures that remain in place.

As I write this, the Main Bar is at long last open again and the F&B service hours have been extended to midnight. This great news came shortly after we were finally able to return to doing what we do best – sailing, rowing and paddling. We have also seen the return of our ancillary sports of bowling, squash and snooker and the swimming pool has now been allowed to re-open too. Finally Club life can begin to return to normal.

ailors made the most out of the short window of the summer sailing season in between two Covid-19 restrictions, as sailing activities had only resumed two weeks prior to the St. James’s Place Sunset series. Eager to make up for lost time due to the pandemic and with travel restrictions keeping people in town over this summer, a record number of participants enthusiastically took the opportunity to escape work early and usher in an early start to the weekend by getting out on the water each Friday afternoon. With an average of 61 boats per race, topping out at 66 on Week 4, a grand total of 79 boats from all classes were represented this year, including the Big Boats; a record not seen since the 1980s. As a result of the record number of participants the Club start line had to be extended to 300m and two starts were required. The Dragon, Flying 15, Impala, Pandora and Ruffian classes starting first, while the Big Boat, Etchells, J/80 and Sportsboats followed – starting six minutes later.
This year’s St. James’s Place Sunset Series brought together all the elements a classic summer regatta could offer – starting off with a breezy first race, an approaching typhoon in week two, a near windless afternoon that ended in an intense squall and two afternoons of brilliant clear blue skies and signature Victoria Harbor stunning sunsets.

The St. James’s Place Sunset Series also continued to be one of the most popular events in the season for sponsors with an almost full platform of sponsors and partners supporting the series. Title Sponsor St. James’s Place Wealth Management was joined by returning Supporting Sponsors, Simpson Marine and Complete RPI Property Management. Prize Partners were all returning brands; Aperol Spritz, Peroni, Pharmabelle and Swims all providing a plethora of goodies for the sailors across the series. Although the weekly prizegiving events were somewhat subdued we want to thank all of the sponsors for their support throughout the summer and encourage members to visit our sponsors websites listed below to find out more about what they have to offer. With an abrupt interruption to the series due to the third wave of Covid-19 restrictions being imposed the series was decided over the 6 races that had been sailed. The 2020 St. James’s Place Sunset Series was won by
Dragon Zephyr skippered by Tam Nguyen and crew with their consistent performance. Frank Van Kempen’s Flying Fifteen Forty Forte was close on their heels only 3.5 points behind. Etchells Reprobate, skippered by Peter Backe and Gideon Mowser’s SB3 Sky’s The Limit both scored 34 points after six races with Reprobate taking third place on count back. Space will be tight to engrave all the winners on the Steward Trophy for 2020 with six boats tying for the most first place wins! Frank Van Kempen’s Flying 15 Forty Forte, Sunny Chai / K K Lee’s Impala Rainbow Chaser, Mike Burrell’s Impala 1, Victor Kuk / David Ho’s Magic 25 Phoenix, C Y Fong / M Ma’s Impala Pied Piper and Kelvin Au Yeung’s Rampage each taking a bullet. Racing would not be possible without our race management team of volunteers including David Walder, Ian Fleming, Ken Wong, James Coghill, Jane Overton, Judy Roberts, Mac Overton, Mark Pang, Tim Roberts, and Tina Atkinson. 69F Foiling Revolution W O RD S: C A LUM G REG O R | IM AGES: ST UDIO B O RL EN GHI | C A RLO B O RL EN GHI
Feature | 69F Foiling Revolution
After Hong Kong provided us with some fantastic training throughout the early stages of summer, it was time to go back to Europe and check in on how we were looking against our competition. The 69F Foiling Revolution would be the perfect regatta for this. The regatta took place on Lake Garda and in the brand new Persico69F class of foiling monohull – one of which we are lucky enough to have at the Club in Kellett island right now!
he 69F is the most similar to the AC9F, the boat we were to compete in for the Youth America’s Cup (YAC) and was therefore the best training platform that we could find. Many of the other YAC teams thought the same as we had teams from Italy, Denmark and two Dutch teams participating in the event as well. As we would only get two days sailing in the boat before the event started, we kept our goals small and focused on getting the simple things right. This meant keeping sheets clean, keeping the boat fast all the time and getting off the line safely and cleanly. The regatta was split into two separate events with an overall winner doing best from both the two events, the first being the youth cup, for sailors under the age of 24, and the second being open to all competitors. The regatta was organised in a knockout format where you would race with four boats in each race and the top two would proceed to the next round with the losers going into a repechage to fight for two last final spots. The 69F has a unique course layout using a square shaped course with a reaching start and with each race only taking around 18 minutes, lots of thrills and spills on the way. Day one of the youth cup saw uncharacteristically light winds with the ‘Ora’ (the southerly wind that blows through the lake) not playing ball. We had two races on the cards for our day the second of which looked like it would be against one of the DutchSail Youth America’s cup teams.

| OCTOBER 2020 AHOY!
Feature | 69F Foiling Revolution
We knew from the practice race the day before that if we got off the start line well we would be able to race against the best teams, we just needed to make sure the boat handling was good and we didn’t tangle and lines inside the boat during manoeuvres, much easier said than done! Happily, we managed to achieve that goal and came away from the day winning both our races! This gave us good confidence going into the next day’s racing and also that we were at a level to compete with the other youth AC teams, even with less time in the boat.
Despite the good start we knew in this regatta format it meant nothing without sailing well for the next two days. After a long wait on day two for the repechage races to be done, the wind died, and the race committee called it a day for sailing. This meant we would have two opportunities on the final morning to qualify for the final. The last day brought with it a strong pĂŠler of 15 to 16kts and, for a lake, very big waves. We had never sailed the boat in above ten knots of wind, and we were a little nervous coming into the start. Unfortunately, we were OCTOBER 2020 AHOY! |
15
Feature | 69F Foiling Revolution a little late coming back downwind from our warmup and were late to the start, we picked up a one-point penalty for foiling inside the prestart procedure which is not allowed in the class. This nervousness showed as we were on the second row of the start line and slow. Despite the poor start we were able to gybe inside the two leading boats into better pressure putting us right back in contention. Due to our inexperience we decided not to hoist the gennaker for the run and this was the wrong decision meaning we lost ground and dropped back to third by the bottom mark. We ended the race in third position but when our penalty came into effect, we were last. However, we still had an opportunity to qualify for the final through the repechage final. We kept our heads high and were very focussed on nailing this next race as we

were up against both Dutch sail teams. Fortunately, we sailed our best race yet as a team and won our race convincingly. This gave us a lot of confidence going into the final. After a short interlude (of four hours) waiting for the Ora to fill in, we started the final in a light 4 to 5kts. We won the windward end of the line and just popped up onto the foils for the first 45 seconds of the race which accelerated us out into the top two. At mark one we gybe set while the Dutch continued out into the middle of the lake. We made good gains inside and gybed back in the lead. However, a small tactical error allowed Dutch sail and Young Azzura to sneak inside us at the mark and it was a procession from there on in meaning we finished third in the race and therefore in the regatta.
Overall, we were really happy finishing on the podium in our first ever event, especially when one considers how little we sailed the boat. Looking forward to the next regatta we were really excited to see how we would fare against some more experienced teams.
On day two we had the semi-finals early in the morning with a strong northerly péler wind. We had a great start and were fighting hard with Dutchsail the whole way around the course. On the last reach we were overlapped with Dutchsail both with kites up doing 25kts of boat speed and definitely out of control! Having avoided a couple of sharp luffs from them we managed to get mark room coming into the last mark. (three boat lengths feel less than adequate at 25kts boat speed!) unfortunately, we did not have our finest drop at this point and crashed off the foils halfway through, putting the kite in the water. Now the boat was dead in the water but with no steerage as the kite was alongside us but in the water. This made us then hit the mark giving us a one-point penalty however we were still in second place and had an outside chance of making it into the final. Unfortunately, we did not quite achieve that and were knocked down into the repechage round for our final.

The repechage final featured Tita, who we had beaten the day earlier, and Young azzura, two very strong teams that both could easily win the event. We nailed the start and were neck and neck with Young Azzura on the way to mark one. At the mark they chose to gybe hoist while we chose to hoist and continue in shore a little to have one less gybe coming into the bottom mark. After some fantastic crew work, we nailed the hoist and gybe which allowed us to cross comfortably ahead of Young Azzura at the bottom mark. We pulled off a foiling kite drop which extended our lead to roughly 40 seconds over second place and a minute over third. On the last upwind we really struggled for both speed and height, a bit of a deadly mix. Both second and third place boats were able to sail a higher groove and close the gap inside of us to the extent that we could not tack without fouling Young Azzura during the tack. This pushed us over the layline and allowed the third-place team to sneak inside us and take second place in the race. Unfortunately, this was the end of our competition, but we felt we could keep our heads held high as we proved we were good enough to fight it out and beat the best teams. In terms of our long term objectives looking forward, we were happy with where we were and were looking forward to heading to Malcesine to start a long training block where we felt we could focus more on boat handling and boat speed as well as sailing a foiling boat with four people rather than the three we had been sailing with in the regatta. Our fifth and third place at the two events was good enough to secure second overall for the combined results. We would like to give a massive thank you to all our sponsors and in particular to Agiplast and RHKYC. We definitely have the best sponsors and Club in the world and feel so lucky to have them and all the members behind us, we truly appreciate the support!
Feature | 69F Foiling Revolution
The second event featured some quite experienced sailors, including four youth America’s cup teams and three nacre 17 world champions among other good teams. The first day saw some of our most competitive racing yet for us. Due to teams’ results in race one, where we finished second, we had what could have been a final on day one with us, the winners of the first regatta, Dutchsail, the other Dutch YAC team kingdom team Netherlands, and Nacra 17 world champion Ruggero Tita dall in one race. With a light southerly wind, it was a non-foiling race but still just as tense. We nailed the start and led into mark one and with some good boat handling and speed managed to extend around the course to come away with a win! This filled us with confidence that we could win the event and compete against the best teams.

The I Flag Rule Sailing
RHKYC’s largest race of the year – The Around the Island Race (ATIR) – will soon be here, so let’s take a moment to refresh ourselves with the details of the I Flag starting penalty. This rule, sometimes referred to the ‘around the end rule’, always catches a few boats out each year and it’s a huge disappointment to race all the way around HK Island only to find that you’ve been penalized because you didn’t comply with the I Flag Rule at the start of the race. Rule 30.1 – The I Flag Rule If flag I has been displayed, and any part of a boat’s hull, crew or equipment is on the course side of the starting line or one of its extensions during the last minute before her starting signal, she shall sail across an extension to the pre-start side before starting.
he I Flag can replace the P Flag in a race starting sequence i.e. is displayed with one sound signal at four minutes before the start, and is removed with one long sound signal one minute before the start. The race committee will often opt to use the I Flag for races involving large numbers of boats and numerous starts so as to encourage boats to start correctly and keep the starting sequence flowing. Hence its use in the ATIR (and also at the Nations’ Cup).
crosses to the pre-start side of the line and is now clear to start once the starting signal is made. If the blue boat had not managed to cross the extension by the start, the race committee would have displayed the X Flag with one sound signal. The X Flag would then be removed once the boat had crossed the extension completely and was on the prestart side of the line, or would have remain displayed for four minutes if the boat had not complied with the I Flag Rule.
When the I Flag is removed (i.e. it’s one minute to the start) any boat (or its crew/equipment) that is on the course side of the starting line or its extensions must now exonerate themselves. This is done by sailing across one of the starting line extensions to the pre-start side before then crossing the starting line in the direction to the first mark. What does this actually look like?
As so many boats take part in the ATIR, two start lines are used to help speed through all the various starts. The Outer Line is between a committee boat and a port end mark so a boat breaching the I Flag Rule can exonerate herself as described above. The Inner Line is between the white pole topped by a yellow triangle on the Starter’s Box and a port end mark. To keep boats from getting too close to
EXTENSION
STARTING LINE
The I Flag has been removed and the class flag is still displayed – so we are in the last minute before the start. The blue boat is forced over the starting line and decides to sail around the port end starting mark and cross the port extension of the line as it’s the quickest option (she could also have opted to sail around the committee boat and cross the starboard extension). She completely

EXTENSION
the rocky shore, an inner distance mark (IDM) is laid in front of the Starter’s Box and boats have to start between this mark and the port end mark. Even though the IDM is not part of the starting line (remember the starting line is between the Starter’s Box pole and the port end mark), the sailing instructions permit boats which have breached the I Flag Rule to sail around the IDM to the pre-
start side of the Inner Line before starting to exonerate themselves. What are common mistakes with the I Flag Rule in the Around the Island Race? • A boat is on the course side in the last minute (perhaps she’s pushed over the line by another boat or by the tide, or perhaps she’s simply running a bit late in getting to the start and is in the process of sailing to the starting area from the Causeway Bay Typhoon Shelter and is on the course side of one of the starting line extensions). She then tries to exonerate herself by sailing across the starting line back to the pre-start side. She has not complied with Rule 30.1 as she did not sail to the pre-start side by crossing an extension and will be penalized (scored OCS or a time penalty applied). • A boat is on the course side in the last minute. She tries to dip back across one of the starting line extensions, but does completely cross to the pre-start side of the line. She then sets off to try and catch her fleet. She has not complied with Rule 30.1 as she did not completely cross the extension and then cross the starting line. She will be penalized. • A boat is on the course side in the last minute. She sails completely across one of the starting line extensions to the pre-start side of the line, spins and then sails back across the extension. She has not complied with Rule 30.1 as she did not cross the starting line after crossing the extension and will be penalized. So, a plea from the race committee for this year’s Around the Island Race, and next year’s Nations’ Cup – if you find yourself on the wrong side of the starting line or one of its extensions in the last minute before your start, take the time to sail across one of the starting line extensions to the pre-start side of the and then start by sailing across the starting line towards the first mark. And indeed, do everything you can not to be on the wrong side of the line (and its extensions) in that last minute. That will make things simpler for you and the race committee!

Plastic Recycling Myths W O RD S: SUSTAIN A BILIT Y W O RKIN G G RO UP
Starting this season, the Club’s sailing, rowing and paddling events will be designated Clean Regattas. Eliminating single-use bottles and recycling correctly will be key to helping the Club achieve at least silver certification. To kick off the Club’s Clean Regattas campaign, the Sustainability Working Group wanted to address four common myths about plastic recycling. All plastics can be placed in the plastic recycling bin There are seven main categories of plastic polymers. The Club’s recycling partner focuses on collecting Type 1 (PET) (typically single-use beverage containers), Type 2 (HDPE) plastics and Type 5 (PP) (typically takeaway food containers). Whilst other plastics are recyclable in theory, they are difficult to recycle in Hong Kong. PLASTIC RESIN IDENTIFICATION CODES Water and soft drink bottles, salad domes, biscuit trays, salad dressing and peanut butter container Milk bottles, freezer bags, dip tubs, crinkly shopping bags, ice cream containers, juice bottles, shampoo, chemical and detergent bottle
All the plastics collected at the Club are recycled If the plastic container or collection bag is not clean and contaminated by food or other rubbish, it will not be recycled. That said, the Club’s recycling partner will accept empty plastic non-dairy beverage containers that have not been cleaned, as long as they are empty. Plastic dairy containers will need to be washed and cleaned before being placed in the Club’s recycling bin. Imagine if you are the one sorting through recycling that smells like spoilt milk! Recycling is a service that the Club pays for and members are encouraged to use the recycling bins responsibly.
Sustainability Really Matters
In 2019, 157.8 kg of recyclable plastic was collected from Kellett Island, Middle Island and Shelter Cove Clubhouses. This was more than double the amount collected in 2018!
All plastics are recyclable in Hong Kong Plastic recycling infrastructure is limited in Hong Kong and a majority of plastic ends up in landfills. According to the Hong Kong Environmental Protection Department, in 2018, 64200 tonnes of plastic recyclables were recovered in contrast to 2,343 tonnes of plastic that was disposed of in landfills per day (139 tonnes of which was PET bottles).

TetraPak is a company that produces single-use beverage cartons. These cartons are not 100% paper or 100% plastic which makes them difficult to recycle with other paper or plastic products. There are two main types of TetraPak cartons: aseptic and non-aseptic. Aseptic cartons contain a layer of aluminum and drinks in aseptic TetraPak cartons (like your average Vitasoy drink) do not need to be refrigerated. These are typically 75% paperboard, 20% polyethylene and 5% aluminium.
TetraPaks cartons can be placed in the paper or plastic bin TetraPak cartons are technically recyclable but it is only recyclable when sent to the recyclers with the machinery to handle them. The Club’s recycling partner does not accept TetraPak cartons so please do not put them in the Club’s recycling bins. There are recycling companies in Hong Kong that do accept TetraPak cartons (which gets milled and recycled into toilet paper, for example) and the Sustainability Working Group is exploring the possibility of a partnership with them. Moorings and licenses for boats big and small Marine
As a happy boat owner you should: • Keep your license and insurance up to date. Please remember that if your license is expired then your insurance is most likely invalid because of it • Do not place two craft on the same mooring • Do not allow an oversized craft to use your mooring • If you allow another member to use your mooring on a temporary basis please inform the Club Marine Office
W
ith the introduction of the Marine departmenwt new regulations for the use of moorings the Club and the mooring holders have different responsibilities. The changes to the mooring regulations have been enacted so as to stop abuse of moorings, especially the practice of placing vessels on moorings that are longer that the prescribed length of an individual mooring, and vessels with out of date licenses. These issues were highlighted in an Ombudsman’s report back in 2012. The report can be seen here: https://www.aud.gov.hk/pdf_e/e59ch09.pdf The two specific extracts that apply to the moorings and members craft are: 9. According to the law, no person shall lay a private mooring anywhere in Hong Kong waters except in the place specified in the permission granted by the Director of Marine. In 2011-12, the MD derived revenue of $16.1 million from letting out private mooring spaces. Audit found that there were cases that mooring owners had cancelled the licences of their designated vessels. However, the MD had not taken action to require the owners to remove their moorings and vacate the spaces for the MD’s re-allocation to applicants on the waiting lists. There is also a need to publicise more proactively vacant mooring spaces. In areas where there are waiting lists for mooring spaces, there is a risk of subletting by taking advantage of the provision in the Shipping and Port Control Regulations (Cap. 313A) that a mooring can be used by a non-designated vessel if there is consent from the mooring owner. The guidelines and administrative measure for regulating mutual personal transfer of private moorings need to be reviewed. 8. Vessels without valid licences. Under the law, a vessel owner who fails to license his vessel commits an offence. The MD conducts harbour patrols and will take prosecution action against owners of vessels found without valid licences. As at May 2012, 15,672 local vessels had valid licences while the licences of 14,517 other local vessels had expired. Besides, some owners’ addresses have not been kept up-to-date. Of the expired licence cases, 3,310 vessels (23%) were also overdue for surveying. These vessels might pose a safety threat if still in use in Hong Kong waters. Besides harbour patrolling, the MD can also make use of its records to monitor some vessels which may be operating without valid licences. However, there were instances that the MD had not taken prompt follow-up action on such vessels.

The Marine Department therefore issued the new regulation for the use of moorings. Our new moorings in Causeway Bay are covered by these of which the main issue for the Club is that the permission to use the mooring is only valid for three years. After this time the mooring must be re-applied for by the Club. If the mooring user, the Club, has not accumulated any penalty points (see next paragraph) this permission will be granted for another three years. A system of penalty points has been introduced for our new moorings. Points will be given for the following infringements of the use of the mooring: Infringements that may be caused by the Member: • The private mooring has secured to it more than the number of vessel allowed to be moored. i.e. One vessel • The private mooring is moored with a vessel exceeding the specified maximum dimensions on the mooring license • The craft on the mooring is not licensed Infringements that the Club will ensure do not take place: • The private mooring is not properly maintained, e.g. deformation, swelled, holed • The private mooring has its mooring number obliterated/ defaced; and • The private mooring has other attachment other than those specified in the Conditions • The private mooring is out of the approved position • The private mooring is submerged • The private mooring is missing • Non payment of the mooring invoice on time. Should the Club be handed sufficient points then the mooring would not be renewed. As the Club is in charge of the moorings, we are tasked with advising the MarDep on a regular basis of which craft is on which mooring. It is also incumbent on us to ensure that the members craft is licensed and insured sitting on a mooring. Please assist the Club by keeping you license and insurance up to date and by obeying the mooring regulations. Thank you. Happy Boating.

Bodegas Beronia Wine Dinner Compass Room | Thursday 8 October
PRE-DINNER TASTING Vilarnau Cava D.O. Brut Reserva N.V.
Bodegas Beronia is quintessentially Rioja. Its wines are defined by the region and the soils in which the vines are grown, and its name linked to the history of the land where the winery is found. In the 3rd Century BC the area known as Rioja today was inhabited by a celtic tribe called the ‘Berones’. They inhabited the towns of Tricio, Varea and Leiva, marking the limits of the Berones region, today La Rioja. The founding ethos of Beronia is strongly allied to the origins of La Rioja. Beronia was founded in 1973 by a group of businessmen, friends from the Basque country who would come to La Rioja on holiday. The friends had a great love of food and wine and created their own gastronomic society, or txoko as it is called locally, in the area. The winery was integrated into the González Byass Family of Wine group in 1982 and began an expansion into international markets. Today Beronia is one of the most renowned Spanish wineries both in international and domestic markets, producing pure and traditional Rioja wines with their own personality and Beronia style.

M. Chapoutier Wine Dinner Compass Room | Thursday 15 October “History will record that Michel Chapoutier is a revolutionary.” – Robert Parker
Chapoutier is clearly a great believer in terroir. The Chapoutier Sélections Parcellaires are some of the most celebrated and rare wines in the world. In 2019, the estate was ranked the fifth in the “World’s Most Admired Wine Brands” out of more than a 100,000 wineries, published by the British magazine “Drinks International”. Since its first edition in 2011, Chapoutier has been ranked the number one French brand, five times in nine years. True to his pioneering spirit, in 1997, Michel Chapoutier set off to explore the terroirs of Australia and settled in the state of Victoria. Fascinated by the geological diversity of the region, in 2009, he purchased two Australian vineyards: Shays Flat Estate and Landsborough Valley Estate in the Victorian Pyrenees. He recognized that the cool weather patterns and remarkable diversity of soil in this region would allow him to make distinctive wines from the Syrah/Shiraz grape of his homeland, utilizing his biodynamic winegrowing philosophy. Wedding Announcement Naomi and Magnus Doole We got married! On 5 July, we had a very small ceremony after multiple Covid-19 induced postponements at the Glass House on Kauri Mountain Point in New Zealand with a few family members and friends in attendance and via a Zoom call. After the ceremony, we ventured out for photos in between squalls of 30-40 knots with our trusty RHKYC umbrellas in tow.
