The Bridge

By all accounts, the Friday night Sunset Series went very well 25 to 30 boats for each race. At the time of writing we still have one more so a full report will appear in next month’s issue. The summer sailing courses this summer were very popular and I am happy to report that most of the courses were full.

Rowing and paddling also report a good update on all their training courses held over the summer months. Looking forwards now, there will be five big events on the rowing calendar for the next season: Hong Kong Rowing Championships at MI on 27 October, the first Around of Island Race with the participation of outrigger canoes on 4 November, the Asian Coastal Rowing Championships from 23 to 25 November at Kellett Island, the Around the Island Race Coastal Rowing on 2 December at Kellett Island and the Middle Island Masters on 8 December.

General Manager’s Message

The Bridge

I hope you have all had a great summer break and are raring to go for the 2018-19 season. Sailing and rowing have a full programme of races and events and of course there is the imminent completion of the Kellett Island project to look forward to too. Over the summer we have made great progress on the final stages of the Kellett Island Development project. We are on the home stretch as it were, with the fit out General Manager Mark Bovaird taking place in the new meeting/ 總經理布馬克 function rooms which we envisage inviting you to come and see very soon. The expanded Bistro is also coming along well, as are the new Reception and Membership Office and we hope to be able to move in a matter of a few weeks. All in all, everything will be complete by the end of October and certainly in time for the much anticipated Regatta Ball on 10 November – ticket sales for which I am happy to report are going extremely well. It will be a fabulous event and a truly appropriate one with which to celebrate the end of the development project so get your application for tickets in soon. We are also delighted to see that so many absent members based abroad are coming ‘home’ to see the Club in all its glory after several years of development. Whilst you wait for the news of the opening of the last part of the project, we have plenty of other events to keep you occupied. Early on this month, on 6 September, we bring you for the first time, the E. Guigal Wine Dinner featuring wines from a third generation family winery in

France. On 14 September another first from France with the Château Pontet-Canet Vertical Tasting Dinner, and on 18 September we move to Spain with the Torres Wine Dinner. Information on these three wine dinners can be found later in this issue together with information on our fourth big wine event of the month (because from all your feedback, one can simply not have enough wine) – the incredibly popular International Wine Fair with BBQ Dinner Buffet at the poolside featuring wines from at least seven countries. This is a super casual event where you can mix and mingle with wine experts and sample (or purchase!) wines from across the world. Whilst I appreciate summer has just finished, I am sure you will agree that time seems to always go so quickly over the summer and before we know it we will be straight into the ever busy Autumn season! Already we are sharing news with you about the National Day Fireworks on 1 October (currently planning on dinner in the usual venues but will move members into the new Bistro and function rooms if they are open in time), and we are having an Oktoberfest Party either at Poolside, or hopefully if the buildings approvals arrive in time, to christen the new west-facing Rooftop above where the old bowling alley was! Prost! As covered previously by the Commodore, we would like to remind all members of the importance of making a submission to the Home Affairs Bureau and to the Land Taskforce regarding the current public engagement exercises on the future of Private Recreational Leases. The Club will be making an official and very detailed submission but it is also absolutely crucial that as many members as possible make their own submissions to government stressing all that the Club has achieved for the development of our core sports and for the benefit of the community and Hong Kong. The deadline for submissions is 19 September and we will be organising a further Town Hall meeting for members so please do come along and get involved. The date is Monday 10 September at 1900hrs in the new function rooms.

one scout per winch was the motto of the day aboard some of the yachts. Fabulous. The start line was between the southernmost tip of Sharp Island and my small scow that also was the de facto committee boat. The race went perfectly well and everyone managed to round Shelter Island on starboard, in all fairness both Joe and I, did teach them what side of the boat is starboard side, so they came well prepared. Local media was aboard my boat and it was most interesting to have a photographer taking photos without any previous boating experience. Despite the excitement, she did well, creating both great photos as well as a very good movie.

Sea Scouts ready to set sail

17 April was the day for our first Community Sailing with the Sea Scouts. As tradition prescribes, when the Shelter Cove Sub-Committee organises Community Sailing events, we usually race around the picturesque Shelter Island, and so we did this time as well. We kicked off the day with Gordon Liu introducing the fabulous world of sailing in our home waters. Joe Leung gave his talk with great enthusiasm explain the theories of sail aerodynamics and the magic of sailing up wind. I gave an introduction to navigation linking the scout’s topographical knowledge with how to read the nature in Port

Shelter and rounded off with how to decode a nautical chart. Practice makes perfect, and this time our dear guests had a lunch that did not increase their chances of getting sea sick. All guest where pleased by the culinary skills at the gem of port shelter. The day was perfect with winds steady at force 4, pleasant temperature and sunshine so bright that my fellow countrymen in Kingdom of Sweden never experienced that back home. Skippers and crew gave a practical introduction to sailing, such as how to grind a winch. Very useful with having eager sea scouts on board,

The Sea Scouts was at the morning lecture given a few tasks during the race, items to find in the nature and at sea. I was impressed with the youngster’s attention to their tasks given and their feedback during the debriefing, sailors in the making for sure. The waiting for transportation was perfectly rounded up with Koko having the remaining Sea Scouts playing a team work and communication focused scout game. I wish to thank the skippers, owners and crew of the participating sailing yachts, Colibri – Patrick Sherriff, Crystal – Allan Leung, Dolphin Six – Francis Ma, Kingsman – Gordon Liu, Zam-zammah – S K Lam and Talkinghead – Joe Leung. And not to forget the fabulous staff of Shelter Cove, Lena Chi as main organiser and Brigitte Cummins and son. Below L to R: Zam-zammah heading out; Joe teaching how to steer

The day started interesting, with five Magic25s in the water, keen and enthusiastic youngsters at place to experience sailing, but only two available skippers arrived. To buy some time, we extended the teaching part of the agenda. Lo Wing Hong gave an enthusiastic talk on the Magics of Sailing and in particular on a Magic25, he did a great work and kept the youngsters engaged. It is not the easiest keeping the Smartphone generation engaged at a location with free Wi-Fi, but Lo Wing Ho did it. I gave an instruction to navigation with some items for them to look out for, when sailing in the beautiful Port Shelter, my wife Katie did the translation. No, she didn’t translate from Nautical to Landlubbers language, it was to Cantonese. Last time we took Youth Outreach sailing, we did so on a rainy and cold day, cold in Hong Kong standard that is. With youngsters arriving in their best party dresses, even one in synthetic colourful fur. This day was fabulous, force 4-5, sunshine and all the youngsters in sporty clothes. With the RHKYC UN coloured caps they all looked the part by the sportsboats. We still had an urgent need of a couple of more skippers to sail the Magic25s. We had superb luck in catching two more experienced Magic25 skippers, with fellow Scandinavian

his time, Shelter Cove Sub-Committee took out 13 youngsters from Youth Outreach on Magic 25s. Youth Outreach is an organisation dedicated to helping at-risk youth grow into responsible members of our community.

Jens-Erik Olsen coming to Shelter Cove for lunch and Sam Levine just a phone call away. Bob Cummins was walking the dog and was called up as crew for Sam. Finally we could get the sailing going and at the same time Lena’s and my pulses lowered considerably. It is not really an option to cancel this kind of event. The course was from one speed restricted zone to another and back, from Hebe Haven to Pak Sha Wan and back. And sailing as safe as you could on a Sportsboat. All boats speeded of and most participants had a try out on the trapeze, one even got the Sportsboat’s baptize by falling in the water doing so, of course with the safety boat on the other end of Port Shelter. The able crew soon got the happy newly baptised aboard, even before the safety boat arrived. With the added excitement, for the youngsters, of one man over board and a broken tow line, the event was a resounding success. With the participants appreciated the change of scenery and fully enjoyed themselves in the excitement of sailing a fast Sportsboat. I wish to thank the skippers, owners and crew of the participating Magic25s; Freefire – JensErik Olsen, Fly By Wire – Sam Levine, Hotwired – Gerry Sonnemans and Sidewinder – Shentin Elson. I also like to thank the fabulous staff of Shelter Cove, Brigitte and Bob Cummins, Lo Wing Ho for teaching and Lena Chi as main organiser. And not to forget Sam’s family as we borrowed him during Father’s Day and Jens-Erik Olsen’s wife as we press-ganged her husband to skipper Freefire during their supposed to be lunch date.

ith the introduction of a new course line up due to marine works in the harbour, the series was sailed under many challenging and varying conditions over the summer; including two races being lost to a T3 and an amber rainstorm / thunderstorm with extremely poor visibility. Only 12 points separated the top three places going into the final Friday of racing, with the overall champion to be decided on the results of the last race. A shortened course and a consistent light breeze held for the duration of race 12 and saw the well raced Impala Rainbow Chaser (KK Lee and team) finally take out the St. James’s Place Sunset Series 2018 overall win. With only a narrow margin of 1 point separating 1st and 2nd place, Sean Lam and crew on the Magic 25 – Ironman was runner up, followed by Shrub – Etchells raced by Isler / Taylor / Boag / McWilliam and team for 3rd place overall. he first Sun Odyssey 440 in Asia recently arrived in Hong Kong and I was lucky enough to get a little test drive on her a few weeks ago. “Jolie Môme” is hull 10 of over 95 already made since this very successful model was launched at Cannes in September of last year. This beautifully designed and very well thought out addition to Jeanneau’s range is the 8th generation of the continuingly successful Sun Odyssey line. She was created by Philippe Briand who has designed more than 60 boats for Jeanneau in his time as a boat builder.

The great interior had more space available than a traditional 44ft due to a much longer chine which made the forward section wider. It was very bright and open and even had a full sized chart table which is not normal on a yacht this size. This version had two double cabins, two heads and a sail locker cabin but other versions could have 3 double cabins instead. The long chine also ensured that she sat very nicely without a large heel on the few occasions she was powered up. The twin rudders and wheel set up also felt very responsive and light and made helming her a pleasure. We had a walk around the open deck during the test drive. The smart and sleek exterior had inclined and continuously flush sidedecks, a first on a yacht this size. This feature, together with the split shrouds (the D1 placed inboard

and the discontiguous D2/D3/TM outside the hull), made access from helm station to bow very easy. These side decks also eliminated the need to clamber over the coamings which was a blessing for the less agile amongst us. When we finally arrived docking at Middle Island was made very easy by the smart drop down bow thruster. We then had time to check some of the party features on her. The cockpit area converted into a party space very quickly and easily. The high coamings could be dropped down to make a large sun lounging and relaxing space and the dropdown swim platform made for the perfect spot to sit and partake in a sundowner or two at the end of a great day sailing. If you are in the market for an elegant and modern French family cruiser from a well established design house make sure you check out the Sun Odyssey 440 or 490 if you get the chance.

She benefitted from having the performance rig option fitted giving nearly 10% more sail area for lighter Hong Kong winds which was lucky because there wasn’t a lot of wind on the day. However, a slow cruise on a beautiful sunny day, from Kellet, through the harbour, dodging the fast ferries, past Aberdeen, and around to Middle Island is always fun. Obviously we had to test out the fridge as part of the test drive – there were two on this model – to make sure it kept the beers perfectly cold, it did. And ending up at Middle Island with a BBQ to look forward to is never a bad thing. She and her big sister the 490 have already won a number of awards in Europe and around the world. European Yacht of the year for 2018 “Family Cruiser” (European Yacht Magazine Association), Best Monohull Cruising Boat 40 to 50ft (Sail Magazine), Boat of the Year 2018 “Most Innovative” (Cruising World), Innovation Award for side decks and layout (Miami Boat SEPTEMBER 2018 AHOY! |

REGATTA BALL 10 NOVEMBER We are so excited with this year’s theme – Bohemian Rhapsody – promising a Regatta Ball that is bigger, bolder and more flamboyant than ever before. Prepare to be amazed, entertained and to sing out loud – a lot! The Regatta Ball is a 12-hour long extravaganza – ending with the traditional Survivors’ Photo at 0700hrs and of course this year we’ll have “We are the Champions” blaring out over the speakers as we take the photo! Those who leave the Ball earlier can expect to hear “another one bites the dust”! Full Dinner ticket holders begin the evening with a two-hour cocktail and canapé reception before entering the Clubhouse for dinner – an exquisite two-course menu (paired with wines). After dinner, members and guests can then set out to explore the Clubhouse and discover a variety of gourmet food stations in various locales together with entertainment galore throughout the night. Yes we’ll have a fun Casino back and the foot massage, but there will be plenty of new and exciting activities too! This year’s Regatta Ball is THE perfect opportunity for members to get together, celebrate and drink a toast or two to our fantastic new Kellett Island home! Dress code is black tie or costume (we are sure you will agree the theme Bohemian Rhapsody will stimulate your creativity) and we are very much looking forward to seeing what you come up with! Tickets are not only inclusive of food, beverage and entertainment, but every ticket sold will contribute towards our very own RHKYC Charity Foundation. So there is much to celebrate!

Outrigger Canoe Racing Season Starts with a Haul of Medals at Lamma Sprints

he ‘ALL ON BOARD’ blast of the 0730 Lamma ferry was a strong wake-up call for 23 outrigger canoe (OC) paddlers of RHKYC. Many had arrived at the ferry terminal only moments earlier with home-made cold brews and a last-minute 7/11 breakfast, eager for the race day ahead. The 1 July Lamma Sprints is an exciting time as it is our first official ‘big race’ in Hong Kong for 2018’s OC Paddling season, as quoted by Sarah Burke, our women’s captain. Welcomed by the host, Lamma Outrigger Canoe Club, the day began with crews of RHKYC, Victoria Recreation Club (VRC), Lamma Outrigger Canoe Club and Lantau Boat Club gathering on Power Station Beach for the low-down of what would be a fun day of OC6 and OC1 sprints and relay races under unpredictable, ever changing weather conditions. 3km OC6 Sprints The Wahines (as women are called in our sport) started the day strong. With clear blue skies, they executed an enviable ‘Le Mans start’, with two of the six paddlers holding the OC6 knee deep near the shore, while the other 4 pow ladies waited enthusiastically on the beach behind the start line for the horn, before running and leaping into the canoe to combine the whole crew and start paddling

around a 3 km loop through Hung Shing Ye Bay. Dodging a barge, tugboat, and massive trawling fishermen’s net, the Wahine crew took 1st place to start the day. Next, the two Open crews experienced completely different race conditions. Out of nothing the wind picked up and the sky darkened for the RHKYC ‘White’ and ‘Black’ crews who battled growing swells and sudden heavy rains in the middle of the race. Focusing on a strong catch in the rougher water conditions, they finished 1st and 4th. Shortly afterward, for the Mixed crews start, as if nothing had happened, the blue skies

magically re-appeared but the nice swells remained and RHKYC managed a good 2nd after VRC. 6km OC6 Relay The next challenge: 12 paddlers per team, one OC6, two 3km loops with a quick and full crew water change between each loop. The first lap was tight, with RHKYC ‘Blue’ pulling into the lead, VRC on their tail and RHKYC ‘Yellow’ in third. But the race was not over yet. It was a fierce and relentless second 3km with the RHKYC ‘Yellow’ battling VRC neck and neck with VRC to achieve a 1st and 2nd RHKYC place finish.

Lamma Sprints 1 July 2018 – Rowing and Paddle Sports Outrigger Canoe Results PLACE

1km OC1 Relay With the big boat distance races behind us, it was time for some small boat fun. It was mid-morning by now, and a few of our newer paddlers learned just how tippy an OC1 can be in even in the calmest shore break. Multiple hulis (capsizes) punctuated the race start as individuals headed from shore, around a moving turn buoy (a Lamma paddler floating on his OC1) and back into shore. There was endless drama with paddles snapping and boats dismantling adding to the fun and extent of a truly unforgettable race day. 500m OC6 Sprints The day concluded back in the big boats’ knock out 500 meters sprint races. Two teams lined up facing opposite directions, raced out to their buoy, turned and raced back to their opponents before finishing back at the start line. The intensity, the roar of the crowd, the dangerously close speedboat complicating it all! It sure was a fun and exciting way to end the day with an overall wins for RHKYC ‘Jade’ women and close 2nd for our ‘Ruby’ men. Post-Race Party! After an action-packed day of races, the organizers hosted an incredible BBQ to jointly re-fuel the athletes and celebrate the victories of all squads. Proudly RHKYC took multiple 1st and 2nd prizes within the different sprint and relay races. Since a strong and mighty team of 6 paddlers were bravely crossing the channel to deliver our canoe back to Middle Island and others were off on the ferry, just a few members were left to collect the medals and liquid prizes. The winnings were far too numerous to carry, so the small remaining ‘circle of trust crew’ were forced to consume the liquid winnings on behalf of their absent racing crew members and trusted to safely deliver the medals to all participants later. The Lamma Sprints is the start of an eventful season of OC paddling, with multiple upcoming races such as the monthly VRC Race series, Deep Water Bay Rockie Rumble, Round Lamma Race and our very own Around the Island Race on 4 November.

Easter District Dragon Boat Festival 2018 W O RD S: LIST ER W O O

DRAGON BOAT CONTACTS dragonboat@rhkyc.org.hk

Rowing

Once a year, the Chai Wan Cargo Handling Area is transformed into a magical race course adorned with colourful flags and banners for Eastern District Dragon Boat Festival. There were a dozen decorated fishing trawlers along with numerous traditional 50-man dragon boats. The race draws many local teams, a large crowd of spectators, and distinguished guests including the CEO of Hong Kong, Carrie Lam. June 10 marked the 5th consecutive year that the Royal X have competed in this event as well as the second year in a row that the Club has been able to enter three mixed crews in this very competitive fishermen’s race.

t was a perfect day with a beautiful bright blue sky. The RHKYC teams arrived at the Chaiwan typhoon shelter with the mission to defend the overall Gold Cup mixed championship title that we had achieved in 2016 and 17. There were 28 mixed teams, each slated to race twice in opening heats. Only the top 5 teams with most points accrued from those heats would get a coveted spot in the Gold Cup final. The next five teams were to be in the Silver Cup final. The race progression at this event means there is no room for error. A loss in one of the two opening heats can put a team out of contention for overall victory. Sadly, two of our crews were slated against each other in the same first round heat. This meant things got tough right from the start. Though our Team Yellow had a seemingly easy first race, teams Red and Blue were up against a strong Stormy Dragons crew. Stormy’s pulled off a convincing first place in this heat. Suddenly, the chance of

Your Health First

us defending the championship was now at a high risk as we finished 2nd and 3rd in the opening heat. The Red team kept its composure and secured a comfortable win in the second heat against Buzz and a young Chaiwan Fishermen Recreation Club team who is also the host of this event. After fighting hard in their respective 2nd heats, both Teams Blue and Yellow came up just shy of making the Gold Cup final and were both slated against each other in the Sliver cup. This was by far the better than any of the previous year’s placings for these crews. Team Blue won the Silver Cup final (6th overall) while team Yellow came in 4th (9th overall). Team Red managed to scrape through with just enough points to get a spot in the gold cup final albeit with the allocation of the dreaded “inside” lane 1. The inside lane at this course is known to be harder to paddle given the shape of the cargo basin and prevailing afternoon tides. This year was

no one in the boat knew who won. We quickly looked to our teammates onshore and the priceless expressions on their faces confirmed our win! The celebration thus ensued as we congratulated our competitors and enjoyed the moment. It was incredibly gratifying to not only have the Club defend the mixed championship for the third year in a row, but also to see how our crews have improved overall. This is certainly one to remember.

no exception as the tide was pushing the outside lanes at the time of the final. This meant that the Red team needed to not only out paddle the other teams, but also the tides! A good start was going to be critical. Thankfully our reaction time at the starting horn was lighting quick, the team had one of the best starts of the year and jumped out to an early lead. We continued to build upon the momentum with teams next to us quickly fading away. Roughly 3 quarters of the way down the course, Stormy Dragons, who won both of their opening heats, were very charging hungrily for the win. They managed to gain a couple of seats and the pressure was on Team Red. We increased our rating for the final dash to finish line. Two finish line horns sounded almost simultaneously,

Toda Regatta 2018 Crews had been training hard in the lead up to the event and it was great to see the commitment to training pay dividends in the races. Crews and results are as follows: Matteo, Jonathan, Gus and Nick competed in Open coxed quads. The boys raced incredibly well and rowed beyond themselves to win the B final, a great achievement in an open event against some very tidy opposition. Hadley and Charlotte rowed in open women’s doubles. They faced challenges with weed growth in the lake during their first race, but rowed a clean and fast race in the D final to finish a very close second. Alex and Jonathan rowed great races but again encountered issues with pond weed. They rowed to 5th in the G final of open doubles. Jeremy and Nick (then Alex due to a schedule clash) rowed to a very close an exciting 3rd place in Final E. Matteo and Gus raced well to a 5th in Final D. We are now planning our next racing trip, to Kyoto in Japan, held over a weekend in September.

F

rom 4 to 6 May, eight of our Youth Development Prgramme rowers competed at the Toda Regatta near Tokyo, Japan. A small group of our older athletes attended the regatta, due to there being no junior racing offered. Therefore, the challenge was set to race against adult and university crews, no mean feat in Japan, a country with a strong and proud rowing culture. The race, held on the lake that was the venue for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, is held over three days, beginning on the Friday. Racing is held over a 1000m course that, although crystal clear and perfectly unpolluted, was suffering from a thick mat of weed that affected all crews in the races.

As part of the coaching team of the group, it was fantastic seeing our squad, who mainly race in the small bubble of Hong Kong, being able to compete against, and beat, crews from other parts of the world. This was a steep learning curve, but one that very obviously inspired and motivated our young rowers. The discipline and maturity all crews showed during racing was impressive, as was the strong team atmosphere that developed between all RHKYC members at the regatta, both adult and youth rowers. I look forward to seeing the YDP racing overseas in future and to many more RHKYC trips abroad.

New Marine Department Regulations for Use of a Mooring Marine

The Marine department has introduced new regulations for the use of private moorings. The changes will affect members who have their own private mooring and members who are allocated Club moorings. These affect all newly laid moorings, from 22 June 2018, and existing moorings that are subject to a change of vessel size. This will include all our moorings in Causeway Bay when they are re-laid later this year. Our other moorings will also be affected as well. 1 The main change in the regulations is that permission will only be given for newly laid moorings (new moorings) and existing moorings that are subject to a change of vessel size (altered moorings) in that the permission to use the private mooring will only be granted for a period of three years. After this time the mooring must be re-applied for by the user. If the mooring user has not accumulated any penalty points (see next paragraph) this permission will be granted for another three years. 2 Another change is that a system of penalty points will be introduced for new moorings or altered moorings. Points will be given for the following infringements of the mooring use, classed as minor irregularity, major irregularity and unsettled payment of the mooring account.

Minor irregularities include the following: the private mooring is not properly maintained, e.g. deformation, swelled, holed; the private mooring has its mooring number obliterated/ defaced; and the private mooring has other attachment other than those specified in the Conditions. Major Irregularities: the private mooring is out of the approved position; the private mooring is submerged; the private mooring is missing; the private mooring is secured more than the number of vessel allowed to be moored; and the private mooring is moored with a vessel exceeding the specified maximum dimensions.

For minor irregularities the following notices will be issued: • Improvement notice. 1 point incurred. • Important notice. 3 points incurred. • Final notice. 5 points incurred. For major irregularities the following notices will be issued: • Important notice. 3 points incurred. • Final notice. 5 points incurred.

If the situation is not rectified then a De-registration Notice will be issued. This incurs 10 points. This gives a total of 19 points for minor irregularities and 18 points for major irregularities. If a mooring holder has 16 points or above the permission to have the mooring will be cancelled.

3 The will also be points deducted for non payment of the mooring invoice after the 14 days payment period. • Issue a reminder notice. 1 point incurred. • Issue important notice. 3 points incurred. • Issue final notice. 5 points incurred. • Finally if the invoice is still not paid there will be a De-registration Notice issued.

For individual mooring holders the payment invoice is sent every three months. For Clubs the invoice is send every month.

4 An inspection of the mooring will be undertaken when an application to renew the permission for a further three years is applied for. Should there be irregularities with the mooring the irregularity point score will be added to any points already accumulated. Should this come to a total of 16 or above then permission will not be given for the application. 5 It should be noted that points from non payment and points from irregularities will be cumulative. 6 Existing moorings will not be subject to the points system but however will be subject to penalties as follows;

Meanwhile, for any permission which is not subject to the Points System, to enhance the transparency of MD’s enforcement action against irregularities or breaches of conditions, MD will, with effect from 22 June 2018, follow the enforcement protocol (with no point accrual) as follows:

(a) if any minor irregularity is found, MD will issue an Improvement Notice. If the irregularity is not rectified, MD will then issue an Important Notice, then a Final Notice, and eventually a De-registration Notice (at which point the permission will be cancelled);

(b) if any major irregularity is found, MD will issue an Important Notice, and then a Final Notice, and eventually a De-registration Notice (at which point the permission will be cancelled); and

(c) if the PM owner has failed to pay the PM fees, MD will first issue a Reminder Notice for Overdue Payment, then an Important Notice for Overdue Payment, then a Final Notice for Overdue Payment and eventually a De-registration Notice (at which point the permission will be cancelled).

The new mooring regulations will affect the Club and members in several ways. All the mooring contract with members will have to be renewed to incorporate the new time limit on the mooring being allowed to be laid. Whilst the compliance of most of the new regulations will be the responsibility of the Club members will be required to refrain for allowing another vessel to use their mooring without the clearance of the club’s marine office. Members will also not be allowed to have more than one vessel on the mooring.

MOORINGS AT HEI LING CHAU MAY NOW BE APPLIED FOR. The Marine Department has opened the second round of applications for vessel owners to apply to lay a private mooring at Hei Ling Chau. This round of applications will close on the 30 September 2018. For the application form and guidance notes vessel owners should log on to https://www.mardep.gov.hk/en/forms/privatemooring_hlc.html. As reported previously the Mardep will not allow the Club to apply for these moorings.

Torres made two significant contributions to the development of oenology in Spain: firstly, the use of fermentation at controlled temperatures, and secondly, the maturing of the wine in small oak barrels during a scrupulously defined time, as has been a habitual practice in Bordeaux. Under the Torres brand name they trade wine and brandy under on a range of different labels, with their best known brandies being Torres 5 and Torres 10. Many Torres wines are produced from international rather than traditional Spanish grape varieties and are varietally labelled. The company exports wines to over 140 countries. In 1991, after the death of Miguel Torres, the winery passed into the hands of his son Miguel A. Torres, the fourth generation of the Torres family, who is the company’s current President and Managing Director.

Torres is a family winery founded in 1870 by Jaime Torres Vendrell and boasts the most extensive vineyards in the Denomination of Origin of Penedès and the largest winery in Spain. During the Spanish Civil War the winery was bombarded, leaving everything in ruins, including the enormous vat. Miguel Torres Carbó, a fourth generation member of the family, rebuilt the winery in 1940 and started the business up again. He brought an end to the sale of bulk wine and started to market it in labelled bottles. In 1966, work started on the modern wine-making and oenology with foreign grapes imported: Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and later on Merlot, Pinot Noir, Riesling and Gewürztraminer.
