Commodore’s Message Welcome back to another season at the Club! Even during the off-season, the Club remained busy – in particular with the St James’ Sunset Series – a full report of which will be included in the next issue.
The Bridge
On 14 July, the Club accepted an invitation from the Hong Kong Playground Association to set up a booth at the ‘Water Sports 4 all Programme’ at the Hong Kong Science and Technology Park to promote the Club’s core water sports. On 4 August the RHKYC Charity Foundation again hosted its annual Sailing and Paddling Fun Day. This year around 50 attendees from six NGOs participated in the fun of sailing and dragon boating. Also in August, 36 under-privileged students from Northern New Territories participated in our Level 1 Sail Training programme. This outreach programme was organised by the Hong Kong Women Development Association and the Lions Club of Bayview Hong Kong. Furthermore, we are gearing up to host another outreach programme to support 30 students from Yan Chai Hospital Group. This student group will again participate in sail training at Middle Island at the end of August. Commodore John Woo

To celebrate the 170 th anniversary of racing in the harbour, we kick off the sailing season on the weekend of 7 and 8 September with the Autumn Regatta. Race 1 of the Autumn Regatta has been designated as a 170-minute pursuit race in the Harbour. I would encourage all participating boats and their crew members to donate generously or even the equivalent of the cost of a movie ticket in return for a great day out on the water. The China Coast Race Week again is just around which is comprising of the China Coast Regatta from 11 to 13 October and the Hong Kong to Vietnam Race, starting on 15 and 16 October. Please register earlier and get prepared for it in particular for those also doing the Hong Kong to Vietnam Race. The Rowing and Paddle Sports Section have a busy September of competition ahead. I would like to wish all crews racing in the Hong Kong Rowing Championships, the Queen Lili’uokalani Race and our very own 3 Peaks Race all the very best of luck and success. The Club continues to prepare for the World Rowing Coastal Championships 2019, the event will be held at Kellett Island on 30 October – 3 November. If you would like to volunteer either on the water or on land for this event, please contact the Rowing Manager (rowing.manager@rhkyc.org.hk) for more information. Also have a look at the lead up article in this issue of Ahoy! to learn more. I look forward to seeing you at the Club not only at our sailing, rowing and paddling events but also at the 170 th Anniversary Hong Kong Harbour Racing Charity Dinner on 26 October and the annual Regatta Ball on 16 November.

This month we begin celebrating 170 years since the first regatta took place in Hong Kong Harbour, back in 1849. On 7 September, as part of the Autumn Regatta, we are holding a Charity Pursuit Race over 170 minutes. Full details are available in the Notice of Race published on the website. In addition there will be Souvenir Polo Shirts available in the Ship Shop and we will have some amazing F&B deals throughout the Club that day too. In October we will have special F&B promotions running throughout the month, all themed around the 170 th anniversary and the celebrations will culminate on 26 October with a very special 170th Anniversary Hong Kong Harbour Racing Charity Dinner and fundraiser in aid of the Club’s Charity Foundation. On 5 September we kick off a new season of wine dinners with wines from Van Loveren, a third generation family winery in South Africa. Van Loveren estate is situated on the banks of the Breede River in the scenic Robertson Valley and their portfolio includes some of that country’s most popular wines. Later in September, on the 20 th, the ever popular International Wine Fair takes place together with a special BBQ Dinner Buffet on the Rooftop. This is fantastic opportunity, (not only to enjoy the spectacular view of the Western Harbour), but to mix and mingle with representatives of wineries from France, Italy, Spain, England and Australia, while enjoying some fabulous wines and of course, a wonderful BBQ dinner featuring dishes from all those countries too. New for this autumn, we will have a whisky masterclass taking place once a month from September to December, and Chef Heinz Egli is back by popular request to give his once a month cooking class, also from September through December. On 19 September we have special dinner featuring wines from South America together with an opportunity for Tango dancing. Start the evening off watching a live Argentine dance performance, enjoy dinner paired with specially selected wines from Argentina and Brazil and then take to the dance floor yourself to perfect your Tango dancing skills. Details of all of these offerings can be found on pages 31 to 36. With the summer now behind us, I look forward to seeing you around the Club

Plastic Free Seas W O RD S A ND IM AGE: T R A CE Y RE A D, Plastic Free Seas, Founder and CEO
The Bridge
here has been a rising swell of environmental activism in the younger generation over the last few years focussing on the interconnected global issues of plastic pollution and climate change. The attention raised by the courageous and determined actions and speeches of world renowned Swedish teenager Greta Thunberg has started a new wave of conversations at global and local levels. Students are empowered and inspired to act knowing that young voices are being heard and that there is a real necessity to be part of a growing movement focused on attaining environmental protection. Realising that there was a lack of awareness on the issue of plastic marine pollution, both in our surrounding seas and distant oceans, Plastic Free Seas began offering environmental education in schools in Hong Kong six years ago, focusing on this serious issue. PFS encourages students to make change happen around them, and we highlighted a few standout examples in our recent newsletter which you can read online at http://bit.ly/PFSArticle For many Hong Kong students, there may be little connection with beaches, the sea or marine life other than the seafood they eat. This is a worrying trend which must be addressed. Everyone must feel the responsibility for looking after our number one life-sustaining resource – our oceans. With RHKYC Charity Foundation’s sponsorship of our ‘Local Schools – Local Action’ education programme, since last September Plastic Free Seas has been able to reach an additional 10,000 students in 56 local schools to reverse the disconnect by talking about and showing students both the positives and the negatives of Hong Kong’s unique marine environment. The ‘Local Schools – Local Action’ programme enables PFS to ‘bring’ the sea into the school and offer the students an opportunity to understand that we need to think about the sea as more than just a food source. Hong Kong is truly blessed with hundreds of islands, stunning coastlines and myriad species of incredible marine life – turtles, pink dolphins, finless porpoises, migratory whales – and diverse marine environments including coral communities and mudflats that support unique biodiversity. But there are many threats to our local waters,
plastic pollution being one of the significant and obvious issues and one that perhaps we as individuals have the greatest control over. It is no secret that our beaches are covered in plastic and seasonally this can increase to levels that turn the sand into landfills. Lap Sap Wan near Cape D’Aguilar on Hong Kong Island had a government-led complete cleanup in 2015. It took three solid months resulting in the removal of more than 8,000 garbage bags of mostly plastic debris including a lot of single-use plastic, fishing nets and ropes and other large items! This and other beaches see a constant flow of plastic detritus from all the single-use plastic that is constantly used and thrown away in our fast-paced disposable lifestyles. As part of our general education programme, in 2018 Plastic Free Seas along with over 3,000 volunteers removed more than 14.5 tonnes of waste from our beaches. Plastic Free Seas shows students how this consumerist lifestyle has an environmental impact on Hong Kong and the world. What we do on land, in our everyday lives, contributes to the flow of plastic in the sea. Whilst few would admit to littering, there are so many opportunities for plastic to unintentionally (and sometimes intentionally) end up in the environment. Hong Kong does a miniscule amount of recycling of plastic but exports the bulk of it to other Asian countries – Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines to name a few since China closed the border to imported ‘waste’, although these countries are also looking at banning or at minimum restricting the amount and type of waste they will import. Once we dispose of our plastic after a short use here in Hong Kong we have no idea where
it ends up. But we do know that some of the countries that accept the imported waste have been flooded with other countries’ plastic. They cannot process the amount of plastic they receive – often it is low grade or contaminated prior to arrival and therefore of little value. It then ends up burnt or in rivers and waterways where it flows out to sea. As globally we are all connected by oceans and the air, this again becomes everyone’s problem. The ‘Local Schools – Local Action’ programme is not only engaging students in the negative impacts of plastic like the gut-wrenching reports of frequent whale strandings with their stomachs full of ever increasing amounts of plastic, but empowering them with the tools they can use to take action within their own networks. The aim of the programme is to engage students in solutions they can implement in their schools, their homes and in their daily lives, letting them come to the understanding of where their role is in this complex issue and ensuring that whilst this is a huge global problem, it can be tackled – and needs to be tackled – by everyone locally. There are solutions that can be taken on by students from kindergarten right through to university and the consequences of good environmental education and awareness will ensure that our future business leaders and consumers understand what we need to do to reverse this trend of plastic pollution. Plastic Free Seas would like to thank the RHKYC Charity Foundation, and all of the Club members, for their support in the fight against plastic marine pollution. SEPTEMBER 2019 AHOY! |

3 to 12 July 2019 in Vilamoura, Portugal t could be said that our move into 420s did not go smoothly. The day after typhoon Manghut we anxiously arrived at Middle Island to find our boat (Sharone) had been very badly damaged. The Club agreed new boats should be ordered but they would not arrive till mid December, so we decided to pull out our boat building skills and repair our boats to the best we could. Added to this, we were aware that having only competed in Hong Kong regattas with limited entries our very first major regatta would be the World Championships, this was not ideal!! Two RHKYC teams were entered for this event, Eloi Defline and Thibault Minne being the second entry.

Arriving at Vilamoura we had realistic expectations of aiming to make the gold fleet but not much more, so the pre-world regatta was essential for us to practice our starts against a top fleet and help make sure that we had set up our boat correctly. Onto the Worlds. An 11th and a 23rd on our opening day gave us a lot of confidence that we were in the ball park and for the rest of the qualifying series we managed to score enough to put us low in the gold fleet finishing the qualifying series in 40th. Whilst we were happy we were learning from the top and more experienced sailors around us, we really wanted to improve on our position and try our best to reach the top 30

or higher. This was going to be difficult because only one discard was awarded for the entire regatta meaning we could not afford any black flags or disqualifications, in short no mistakes. In the bigger breezes the heavier crews dominated but the first day of the final series was in our favour as it was light airs and we managed to place a 17th and a 2nd which then boosted us up to 26th. On the second day of final series we were excited because more light winds were expected however throughout the whole day no breeze had filled in and no races were run, we were gutted. The final day arrived and the breeze was back to very windy which favoured the heavier crews but we still aimed to do the best we could – meaning no black flags, no disqualifications, no capsizes but still push as hard as we could. Three races were planned for the day after no racing the day before but in difficult conditions only two races were run leaving us to finish a very respectable 30th overall. Eloi and Thibault just missed out on qualifying for the Gold fleet despite some excellent results including three top 15 finishes. It is very
tough to only get 1 discard in a 10 race regatta! Key learnings – discipline and planning is everything – no silly mistakes – plus need to eat A LOT more food and weigh in heavier next summer! Highlight – getting a 2nd in gold fleet and beating comfortably the world champions! Just felt we were close and competitive to the top guys, given so little experience, so excited already about 2020 world Champs – bring it on!! Most importantly THANKS – to the RHKYC for all its support over the past year and in particular to the Club’s Double Handed coach, Daniel, who coached us at this event and kept us on the straight and narrow!

The World Rowing Coastal Championships will bring up to 700 of the world’s top coastal rowers to Hong Kong at the end of October to compete in the first-ever World Rowing Coastal Championships to be held in Asia. The RHKYC will be the competition base. W O RD S: MIKE TA NNER, Ex-Rowing Captain of RHKYC and Chairman of 2019 World Rowing Coastal Championships Organizing Committee IM AGES: BRIA N CHIN G
he World Championships will be followed a week later by the Club’s own Around The Island Race (ATIR) for rowers, which in itself is fast becoming a major event on the world coastal rowing events calendar. Many of the world championships competitors are expected to stay on for the ATIR and the combination of the two events this year will further cement the Club’s prominent role in Asian and World rowing. The 2019 World Rowing Coastal Championships has been awarded M-Mark status and will be the first M Mark event to be hosted at the Club. Row ‘n’ Rock! – Race in the City
Rowing – Old and New Rowing is one of the oldest sports in Hong Kong, with the first recorded rowing competition held in the harbour in 1845. The first club involving rowing, the Victoria Regatta Club, was established in 1849. With Hong Kong’s long coastlines and the contrast between its beautiful natural environments and the cityscape of Victoria Harbour, the city has the potential to attract sports people from around the world, whether for competition or for “rowing tours”. Coastal rowing boats, unlike the traditional Olympic “flat water” fine rowing boats, open up all these new opportunities for rowing in Hong Kong to spread far beyond its traditional locations of Deepwater Bay and the Shing Mun River in Sha Tin.
The Club’s Rowing Section, working together with the HKCRA, wants to be a part of this potential growth and its central role in support of the 2019 World Rowing Coastal Championships is a part of this future vision. values and harmony of rowing, combined with the spirit of Hong Kong and its vibrant harbour. It is no coincidence that Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour is the home of the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club. The harbour and its maritime history are wholly entwined in the development of Hong Kong’s modern economy, just as the Club has always been a central part of this history through its own maritime connections.
What is the Club Contributing to the 2019 WRCC? The Club is playing a prominent part in the World Championships, as both the Venue and Delivery Partner and the Legacy and Lead-up Partner, providing facilities, equipment and technical and volunteer support for the event. Without the Club’s full support commitment in this way, it would not be possible to host the event in the harbour.
The ‘Rock’ element in the branding does not indicate the movement of the boat in rowing, but attempts to exemplify the dynamic nature of Hong Kong and its citizens – trying to express in one word everything which goes to make up the unique and successful nature of Hong Kong and its people!
Championships activities will be split into 2 periods
Preliminary Heats
Friday 1 and Saturday 2 November
We want our visitors to feel the heart-beat of Hong Kong and what has made this one of the most exciting cities in the world, grasping this through the excitement of racing in the heart of the City.

Sunday 3 November
And we want the RHKYC and its members to be a part of this excitement, welcoming the many overseas rowers to the Club and to the City and feeling that they have a key role in making our visitors want to return to race again in the harbour in the future! The Spirit of Hong Kong and its Iconic Harbour Right from the time the idea of bringing this event to Hong Kong was first discussed, the harbour was always the OC’s first or only choice as the
Registration and on-water Training Tuesday 29 to Thursday 31 October Racing
Members will see the most obvious indicators of the world championships when the boatyard is filled with rowing boats and the very large influx of international rowers arrive at the Club. Nearly 100 coastal rowing boats comprising solos, double sculls and coxed quadruple sculls, together with over 200 sets of sculling oars will occupy the boatyard area starting from their delivery on 28th October. During the training days, arriving crews will be processed through registration and information desks at the Club lawn and will be training on the actual racing course between the Club and Central Pier 10. venue, despite recognising the many challenges of hosting such a high profile event in one of the world’s busiest ports. Rowers can experience first hand the vibrancy and energy of Victoria Harbour with its dazzling cityscape. And not only on the water – the OC is planning a mini carnival at the Central waterfront to raise the profile of the championships, with visits to Hong Kong Maritime Museum, rowing opportunities on the harbour for the general public and interactive games alongside the Hong Kong Wine and Dine Festival and the Rugby World Cup Celebrations.

Members will have the opportunity to meet and talk with these top rowers in the bar and the Bistro. The rowers will be joined by World Rowing Officials, International Umpires and of course a large group of local officials and volunteers. Many VIPs will also be at the Club for the event, including high level government and sports officials and corporate sponsors and supporters. It is an opportunity for the Club to be proud of its ability to host and support such major world-level events and to demonstrate the important role the Club can play in the development of local and international water sports in Hong Kong. Two of the Regatta Rooms will host the championships management offices of World Rowing and the Organising Committee and a third room will be a VIP facility for the Sunday finals day. The Club will be a busy place, especially on the three racing days, and we hope that members at the Club will welcome the participants enthusiastically. Club members will have a front row seat to all the activities. Legacy for the Community Hong Kong has been a leader in Asian rowing since the formation of the Asian Rowing Federation in 1982 at the time of the Delhi Asian Games, where rowing was included as an Asian Games sport for the first time – and has been in every Asian Games since. Hong Kong organised the 1st Asian Rowing Championships in 1985 and then later the 1st Asian Indoor Rowing Championships. We hope to be a leader in the promotion and development of coastal rowing in Asia. As the governing body for Rowing in Hong Kong, the HKCRA is committed to the promotion of rowing in Hong Kong and developing Hong Kong’s position as an influential federation in World and Asian Rowing. One of the many reasons behing Hong Kong’s bid for these World Championships was a vision to use the event to create a lasting local legacy with opportunities for community participation in rowing and a greatly enhanced public recognition of rowing as a sport in Hong Kong. The harbour location and the strong support of government departments to facilitate the event will play a key part in achieving this objective. The RHKYC’s support has enabled the OC to confidently move forward with this major effort to bring World Rowing to Hong Kong and the community.

170th Anniversary Hong Kong Harbour Racing
This is a very important year as we can track our history back an impressive 170 years of racing in the harbour and 125 years since we received a Royal Warrant. Despite the fact that we gave back the Royal Warrant in 1997 when Hong Kong became a Special Administrative Region of China, this is still a part of the history of our Club. To celebrate this special year, we are creating souvenir shirts for sale in the Ship Shop, dedicating the first race of the Autumn Regatta on 7 September as the 170th Anniversary Hong Kong Harbour Charity Race. Also that day we will have some incredible F&B offerings across the three clubhouses. We’ve got some new boats! Earlier this year (and just in time for Hong Kong Race Week) the club took possession of eight VSR RIBs replacing the Tornado RIBs used for sail training, coaching, powerboat training, and volunteer duties. There are two types of VSR at the Club; the VSR1-4 is specifically equipped for powerboat training, mark laying and safety boat duties and the VSR 5-8 is kitted-out for coaching. This would be a good time to reintroduce the procedures for PVOL holders, with a Powerboat Level 2 certificate, on how to prepare and check the RIBs for a day on the water. The RIB layout, especially the location of the fuel-tank, is different to the older Tornado models, and worth having a look at in detail.
Systematically check the boat from front to back 4. Painter 5. Anchor, chain and warp. At the front is a dedicated anchor locker, which contains a Bruce anchor, 2-3ms of chain, and a minimum of 25ms of warp. There are a total of six sponsons, each with an inflation valve, and an overpressure valve. The hand pump is located under the seat.
On the console, we have a standard detent throttle, located on the right hand side for VSRs 1-4, and left hand side for VSRs 5-8. A digital tachometer, navigation light switch, and bilge pump. The fuel tanks are under the helm / crew seat. On VSR 1-4, the capacity is 60 litres, and VSRs 5-8, 88 litres. VSRs 1-4 have an option to fit a reserve fuel
tank under the helm console, giving another 40 litres endurance. The fire extinguisher (Dry Powder) is under the helm seat. There is a battery isolator located in the lower storage cubby (VSRs 1-4), or the top storage cavity (VSRs 5-8) On VSR 1-4, there is a dedicated towing post, located behind the crew seat. Attached is a 20m line, for towing / tying off etc.

Thank you to our amazing volunteers! W O RD S: BRENDA DAVIES | IM AGES: NIKKI CL A RIN GB O L D
Sailing Commodore John Woo presents the Top RHKYC Volunteers 2018/19 with their awards (clockwise from top left) Barry Truhol with Rear Commodore Sailing Lucy Sutro; Inge Strompf-Jepsen; Ken Wong; Bonnie Cheng; Patrick Kwan; Sheila Chan
ast season’s RHKYC sailing race programme would not have been possible without the 951 days of help given by our amazing volunteers at a wide variety of events, from weekly class racing to class championships, major regattas and offshore races, and the 6th edition of Hong Kong Race Week. The number, variety and scale of our sailing events would be impossible without members volunteering their time and expertise to help plan and implement them. Over the 2018/19 season, our volunteers contributed: VOLUNTEER DAYS
Normal class racing, including Class Championships, the Class Regatta and the Sunset Series
225
Champion of Champions, Autumn Regatta, China Coast Regatta, Hainan and Puerto Galera Races, Lipton Trophy, Around Middle Island Race, Around the Island Race, HKRNVR Memorial Vase, Inter-School Sailing Festival, Tomes Cup, Nations’ Cup, Ladies Helm Day, Spring Regatta
253
Hong Kong Race Week – on shore (registration, measurement, tally on/ off etc.) and on the water (race management, mark laying, safety)
384
Protest committees
50
Others – scrutineering, training courses, mark laying for the Asian Rowing Coastal Championships
39 Total
951
Each volunteered hour, half day or day – be it on shore or on the water – is valued by the Club, the event organizers and, of course, by the sailors taking part in the racing. Luckily the members and friends of the RHKYC continue to be generous with their time and some 516 individuals stepped up during the year to help out. Of these, 13 people volunteered 10+ days of their time, 32 people volunteered 5-9 days and 112 people volunteered for 2-4 days. The RHKYC Race Management subCommittee focuses on developing and encouraging our pool of sailing volunteers by organising a variety of seminars and practical training courses each year. Volunteers are provided with sustenance during and after racing at the Club’s major regattas and class racing volunteers receive F&B vouchers as a small token of appreciation on their duty day. Another popular initiative is the annual RMsC Volunteer Thank You Party which has been held at the end of the sailing season for the past five years. Over 200 people who had each volunteered more than a day over the 2018/19 season were invited to this year’s party in May. Particular recognition was given to the contributions of Barry Truhol (21 days), Inge Strompf-Jepsen (15 days), Ken Wong (12¼ days), Bonnie Cheng (10½ days), Patrick Kwan (10 days), and Sheila Chan and Phillip Walker (both 7½ days) who were each presented with one of the highly prized ‘Top RHKYC Volunteer 2018/19’ personally engraved Leathermans.
Please continue to support racing at RHKYC by volunteering your time to help with this season’s races and regattas. To volunteer, please sign up at https://www.rhkyc.org.hk/events/Volunteers20192020.aspx. Thank you for your help!

Tuen Ng Festival A Golden Trifecta in Tai Po!
DRAGON BOAT CONTACTS dragonboat@rhkyc.org.hk
W O RD S: MELIS S A DAVIS | IM AGES: ROYA L X T E A M
Rowing
he Tuen Ng Dragon Boat Festival is a day that has always evoked strong emotion and great celebration for all current and past Royal X team members. The festival day carries with it a grand history of Club representation at the Stanley International Dragon Boat races dating back well over 25 years to the origins of the Royal X. Yet, after many years of success, commiserations, loyal representation, broken paddles (and hearts), not to mention the blood, sweat, many tears and multiple championship trophies, it was time to say goodbye to Stanley and seek a new dragon boat festival experience. The Tai Po dragon boat race was a popular choice for the team to make their mark and start a new chapter racing among the scenic hills and expansive green pastures of Tai Po Waterfront park. Royal X registered two women’s small boat crews, one open crew, and two mixed crews to compete for glory over a 500 meter distance race course. The women’s category was honoured to race in 12 seat small boats adorned with beautiful traditional Phoenix heads and tails symbolising women only crews. The course itself was exposed to a strong crosswind for most of the day making it quite a challenge for a small boat crew. However, the women’s A crew were quick to secure a confident first place in the opening heat earning them a

spot in the top tier final. Not so for the women’s B crew who had to fight hard at the start line and narrowly missed out on a top tier final. The women’s B crew ended the day with a strong third place finish in the minor final, while the women’s A crew had a sensational two boat length victory in the main final. This would be the the first in what was to become an epic championship title day for the Royal X. Next up, the mixed crews competed against each other in the same opening heat. Shortly into the race one of the crews near the mixed Blue lost control of their boat and collided with ours. The training of the mixed blue was apparent, thanks to Coach Woo, as everyone remained calm and continued to paddle. Despite the contact from the other boat, our Mixed Blue finished the heat in first place while Mixed yellow came across the line in 3rd place. This meant that for the first time the Club had both mixed crews successfully advance directly to the top final. The mixed Blue crew powered through in the grand final race battling against fierce competition from local teams the whole stretch
of the course that pushed the crew to near breaking point to secure yet another second championship title. Mixed B paddled hard finishing with a commendable 5th place. Last, it was the men’s crew heading in to battle with insurmountable pressure to place and no doubt, they smashed their first heat with a strong performance. Again, it was another tight finish in the main final for the men’s full standard boat crew snaring the third championship title victory over a strong Western District Firemen crew. Never in the Club’s history has the Royal X team placed first in all three categories on the same day. A ‘trifecta’ was always something the team and management dreamed of, it was something we always strive to deliver and for the first time ever, we did it! Whilst we say goodbye to one race we continue to welcome new and exciting racing possibilities, with open hearts and minds and paddles in hand, we are proud to stamp Tai Po with an X.

Club Moorings for Casual Use W O RD S: A L A N REID
The moorings at Middle Island are fore and aft moorings and run parallel to the HK Island shore line as can be seen below:
Marine
ome members may not be aware that the Club has casual use moorings in Middle Island and at Jade Bay in Sai Kung.
Unfortunately these moorings were damaged in the Saturday afternoon storm during Easter and there are now only three in commission until replacement buoys arrive. These are on their way from China as this is being written. It is thought that oversized non members craft were moored to the buoys when the front of the storm arrived thereby causing undue stress on the mooring which broke the chain on three moorings. The mooring are labelled RHKYC as can be seen in the photograph.
These mooring buoys do not have mooring lines on them and members are expected to use their own lines for securing their vessel. As it is not easy to secure mooring lines to the buoys from a high sided sailing craft members should seek the assistance of the Middle Island sampan and marine staff to help moor their craft. Advance notice to the MI marine office, on 2812 7202 or by e-mail to Laurence.Wong@rhkyc.org.hk or marine@rhkyc.org.hk will help the MI marine staff to prepare for your arrival. The sampan can be contacted on 9427 9038 for assistance on arrival. Please note that these moorings are rated for 10 metre craft and are not suitable for strong wind or typhoon conditions.
These moorings are only suitable for 8 metre craft to use but unfortunately larger craft, and non members, use them. Members whose craft are secured to the mooring buoys should fly their Club Burgee to identify themselves as Members. Burgee’s are available at the Ship Shop.
In Jade Bay, or Tsam Chuk Wan, in Sai Kung the Club has six casual use moorings.
With the shortage of moorings in Hong Kong the Marine Committee is examining whether to allow two or three of these moorings to be permanently allocated for members use. The marine office has asked the Marine Department if the moorings can be increased in size but unless we allocate a specific craft to the mooring the Marine Department will not give us an answer. A catch 22 situation unfortunately. Should a member wish to put their name forward for one of these moorings please let the marine office know on marine@rhkyc.org.hk. Happy Mooring.... Van Loveren Wine Dinner Compass Room | Thursday 5 September The Retief family has been making wine since they purchased the farm in 1937, warmly welcoming visitors to the farm house and tasting rondavel. In those years, they made sweet wines and wine for brandy. Jean Retief, a traditionalist, persuaded her husband, Hennie Sr., to name their farm Van Loveren because of her ancestral connection. In the 60s, Wynand and Nico Retief, the sons of Hennie Sr. and Jean Retief, started making wine for wholesale. This led the Retief family to start bottling their own wine. A major milestone was reached in 1980, with the birth of the Van Loveren brand. Under this brand the first 500 cases of Premier Grand Cru were bottled. Wynand’s sons, Phillip and Neil, and Nico’s sons, Bussell and Hennie, joined the family farm as the third generation of the Retief winemakers. In 2000, the four cousins introduced the Four Cousins range of wines, which today is South Africa’s biggest selling bottled wine brand. Today they are the driving force behind the company. Built on three generations of proudly South African entrepreneurial spirit and genuine hospitality, Van Loveren has become South Africa’s foremost family-owned and operated wine business with an incredible variety of quality offerings.
