Roy Humphrey, Chairman ACU Ltd

Steve McCauley

I’ve been invited to write a few words about the new look British Motocross Championship which I’m very pleased to do and having been involved with it in some way myself for over twenty years it’s a pleasure to see an exciting new look. The 2021 British Motocross Championship is a professional package put together by Gareth Hockey and his team at RHL Ltd, the ACU Motocross Committee, the Traditional ACU club Organisers, Professional Track Owners, Race Teams, Industry, Media and Leading Sponsors. To me it looks like it will encompass everything good about British Motocross including the Nations star riders, the up and coming riders and the stars of tomorrow the Youth riders, RHL will bring the glamour and professionalism of the massive Weston Super Mare Beach Race to the National series and keep the heritage of the Championship alive. The clock is counting down and the Orbits green flag to start the first race, is about to be clicked as an old timekeeper would say!

Well here we go, the beginning of a new era for the British Motocross Championship. It feels good to be able to resume again following a year of no events due to being blighted by the Covid pandemic. 2021 marks the first time that I can recall that the Revo ACU British Motocross Championship Fuelled by Gulf Race Fuels will be promoted by a body outside of the ACU. RHL Activities, the promoters of the Championship lead by Gareth Hockey with an impressive team behind him are the new captains at the helm. I am sure that whilst this year will be a learning year in some aspects for all, the series will be a resounding success. A reminder to all that the Championship carries the Official British titles and is absolutely the only path to EMX and MXGP with the Auto Cycle Union being the only recognised national governing body by HM Government. The list of sponsors and series associates that have already been amassed by RHL is very impressive. As Chairman of the Motocross Committee and Race Director of the Revo ACU British Motocross Championship Fuelled by Gulf Race Fuels my door is always open to anyone who wishes to discuss any aspect of ACU Motocross.

Promoters of the Revo ACU British Motocross Championship Fuelled by Gulf Race Fuels RHL Activities who have been organising the British Youth Championship since 2014 and running rounds of the ACU British Adult Championship have in 2021 taken on the rights to promote and organise with a number of clubs and organisers the ACU Adult British Championship from the Auto Cycle Union. As a company, we have been running events and promoting motorsport for over 30 years. We aim to make every event unique and encourage people to see off-road motorsport as a distinguished and celebrated sport. As one of the major companies for organising and promoting off-road motorsport, we aim to raise the profile from its traditional grassroots to a high profile sport and trading events they are now. Over the past years, RHL Activities has won many awards for the recognised work that we do as a company, such as “Sporting Event of The Year” in 2019 and our last award being “Best Motorsport Event Management Company” in 2020. Our latest movement as a company is to become greener and to promote sustainability within the Motorsport industry by implementing new and technologically advanced methods to help promote a viable solution for a greener community. It is great that we have an FIM environment steward and ride green community manager on our team to further advance our strategies. We are looking forward to holding this year’s events, and as a company, we are motivated to get as many people to hear about it as we can. The lineup has differed from last year and of course, the events are closer together than they have ever been meaning that riders should be on their top form to be able to compete for the crown this year. We are looking forward to welcoming people back to the rounds as we continue to have more freedom within the covid-19 restrictions. The Revo ACU British Motocross Championship Fuelled

by Gulf Race Fuels is one of the many events that have been promoted and organised by RHL. In 2009 Gareth Hockey successfully created and promoted the Handlebar festival. The event surrounded the opening round of the 2009 MX3 World Championship and the European MX2 series, both of which featured British riders who travelled to Hawkstone Park to show their potential on the world stage. The event also encompassed elements of Mountain bike, BMX and Trials.

As the Promoters of the Revo ACU British Motocross Championship Fuelled by Gulf Race Fuels, we are constantly looking for innovative ways to improve the Championship and the audience that it reaches. We are looking to promote the sport to a more diverse audience and to give motocross the recognition it deserves. Over the past years, the Championship has lacked the flare and passion that the teams and riders deserve and as a

company, we are looking to bring it all back. Recently as a company, we have been looking into the new technologies that can help the Championship advance, instead of using just social media we have expanded onto an app that provides all the latest news and upcoming events for the motocross world. After testing and trialling it in 2019 we have also brought back live streaming now called RHL MXGB TV that is available to view through the app or on a browser. These advances in technology will help us to expand our audience base. The company has always had a passion for pushing boundaries. This includes pushing the development of riders to grow with the sport, catching them at a young age and helping them advance through to the MXGPs.

Langrish to Foxhill The Langrish club have for many years organised British championship motocross at their famous Manor Farm track, Home of the Ken Hall trophy. However, following the sale of the farm, we were offered the use of Foxhill. Following two attempts to run a British round, both of which were cancelled due to storms, the club kicked off at their new venue in 2019. The event was a huge success on a re vamped Foxhill track and attracted a huge crowd. Shaun Simpson took the honours in MX1 and Dylan Walsh was the victor in MX2. The Langrish club for many years, ran the Ken Hall International at one of Europe’s finest tracks at Manor Farm, Langrish. The club was handed the Ken Hall back in 1999 by the Waterlooville club. It was the intention of Langrish to take the event to its 50th birthday. This was achieved in 2016. The event was “retired” at this milestone, and after a 1 year break the Langrish club moved down to Foxhill.

www.rhlactivities.com

Since the last British championship at Foxhill, Paul Cook, our track builder, has added a new section on the entrance to the valley, and re designed the finish area. Covid-19 and weather allowing, he has plans to reposition the start and add 2 more turns before the valley section. A new lake has been built to hold much needed water to keep the hard pack track at its best. The Langrish club are delighted to be working with RHL the new promoter of the British championships and cannot wait to welcome

spectators back to the banks of Foxhill. Foxhill Moto Park has been established as a major Motocross venue since 1983, 26 years ago, during which time it has played host to events at every level of the sport. With riders of all grades, from Youth, through amateur adult club levels, to Classic and full on Professional World Championship rounds for individual and team glory, each learning to cope with the unique demands of one of the worlds toughest and most respected MX tracks.

Termed only recently in TMX News, as the Field of Dreams, with perhaps the finest accolade of all pronounced by non other than multi World Champion Stefen Everts as having an atmosphere on race days as, Second to None, but it is our belief that the best is yet to come. During 2008, and onward the amenity was further developed and improved, the eventual aim being to provide a country park style facility that will just happen to have the United Kingdoms finest Motocross circuit within its bounds.

Cadders Hill Lyng Welcome to Cadders Hill for a round of the 2021 Revo British Motocross Championship that will boast a comprehensive days racing which includes the MX1 and MX2 classes, the opening round of the Precise Protect Womens British Motocross Championship, and two youth categories which give the stars of tomorrow the opportunity to take on one of the most daunting circuits in the UK.

for the 2011 season had to be halted when a 360º excavator unearthed a suspicious object. Further investigation led to the police being called, and they in turn called out the bomb disposal team from Colchester. After thorough inspection, which included an X-Ray of the offending item, it was declared to be a second world war practice mortar bomb filled with cement!

It is a venue that is steeped in history with the Norwich Viking Motorcycle Club involved in organising motorcycle events on or around the ‘hill’ since 1936.

Lyng was one of the venues for the BBC Grandstand Television Trophy scrambles in the late 60s and there have been rounds of the British Championship here for over 30 years; however, in 1993 the best riders on the planet were attracted to the Norfolk track when it hosted a round of the 125cc FIM World Motocross Championship. Cadders Hill is a natural hillside circuit, primarily sand based, without too many man made obstacles. It is nonetheless spectacular, and becomes more physically demanding as the track cuts up which really sorts out those who can, and those who think they can! History aside, the small dedicated team from the Norwich Vikings are always looking at ways to improve the track and associated infrastructure.

Geoff Mayes - 1980 500cc British Championship on the Denis Slaughter sponsored Maico

Originally the venue was used for hill climbs, but after the second world war they ran what were known as mountain grasstracks until the circuit became too rough and from 1949 onwards they switched to scrambles – which of course we all know today as motocross. During the war, Cadders Hill was used for training dispatch riders and members of the Home Guard; a fact that was reinforced when pre-event preparation www.rhlactivities.com

For 2021 there is a new layout at the end of the lap which features a short new finish straight just after the descent down the face of the hillside which gives the venue it’s name, and a reworked series of corners which has allowed for an improved work area for the teams and a bigger viewing area for spectators. Elsewhere, regulars will notice that there are also some changes to the extended part of the track which are intended to reduce the speed as riders jump back into the main arena.

With the Lyng track being so close to the village, no events were held throughout 2020 so we have to look back to April 2019 to see who was picking up the podium positions. It was Tommy Searle on the BOS Factory Holeshot Kawasaki who took the overall victory in MX1 with 2 – 1 finishes, just ousting RFX KTM Racing’s Shaun Simpson on the tie break after he finished 1 – 2. Cab Screens Deos Group Racing Honda mounted Harri Kullas took the final step of the podium with a 5 – 3; while Conrad Mewse made short shrift of the MX2 class on the Hitachi KTM with two commanding wins. Josh Gilbert put the Buildbase Honda on the second step with a 2 – 4, and Bas Vaessen took third overall with a 4 -3 on the second of the Hitachi KTMs. The first WMX race was probably the closest finish of the day when JW Scaffolding KTM rider Amie Goodlad dived down the inside of early Conrad Mewse - Hitachi KTM from the MX2 Race at Lyng in pacesetter Kathryn Booth’s RFX KTM at the April 2019 chicane on the final lap to win by a tyres width, before Kathryn took the second moto in a more relaxed fashion, the overall victory, and championship honours. In MX2 Youth, Joel Rizzi kept the RFX KTM colours to the fore as he recorded two perfect scores to take the overall win from Ike Carter (DEP Husqvarna) who just got the better of Manchester Motorcycles’ Kyle McNicol.

Canada Heights

The course at Swanley, Kent known as Canada Heights, acquired its name during the 1914-18 War when a large contingent of Canadian troops were camped there on the high ground. It has, however been in regular use for off-road motorcycle sports for many years, and by the Sidcup and District Motorcycle Club since 1952. Over the years, the circuit has hosted many events, from Club level to International status. It drew large crowds and national television coverage with the BBC “Grandstand Trophy” events during the 1960s. Despite its popularity and regular use by riders and spectators alike, it still remained just a rough piece of land for motorcycling until 1985, when the Sidcup Club bought it with the aid of a grant from the Sports Council and sponsorship from companies and individuals. Once purchased, Club members set about transforming the whole area. Access roads were laid to improve entry for spectators. The tangled undergrowth was cleared to provide better parking and viewing. Then the exciting new track was created. During recent years, the land has been dramatically improved, but never at the expense of the beautiwww.rhlactivities.com

ful countryside and wildlife. Further land at the rear of the site was purchased in 2000 and in 2010 a storage barn was built to accommodate the ground maintenance equipment. The land has been properly managed with many new trees planted as the Club continues to develop the “South’s Most Spectacular Circuit” The Sidcup Club is extremely proud of its asset and encourages its use by the Police for officer’s motorcycle training, walkers, horse riders, the Scouts, mountain bikers and others who love the countryside but are not involved in motorcycle sport. The motocross track itself is spectacular and demanding. It brings out the very best in motocross riders allowing them to use every ounce of riding and athletic skills. Its popularity is seen by full entry lists for all our events and good crowds to see the action. On site there is water available from standpipes (available at most major meetings) and plentiful camping space. Catering is provided by the Wynnings & Weaver who attend all our events. Toilets are also available at all our events.

Blaxhall Circuit

Woodbridge and DMCC Ltd host the Blaxhall round of the Revo ACU MXGB British Motocross Championship for 2021. The sandy circuit at Blaxhall near Woodbridge Suffolk features a flowing layout which uses its natural changes in elevation to create an exciting race circuit for both riders and spectators. Blaxhall has played host to a number of British Championship events in the 90’s and the early 00’s, before becoming a regular venue of the ACU British Championship once again in 2015.

Since 2015 the well-presented venue at Blaxhall has produced exciting racing and has seen the club named ‘Organiser of the Year’ for four consecutive years from 2016 to 2019, when the club last held a round of the championship where Tommy Searle and Josh Gilbert took victory. The club, originally founded in late 1956, started life off as the Rendlesham and District Club. The club’s name changed from the Rendlesham Club to Woodbridge DMCC in 1966 when the club held its first Scramble at the Blaxhall Pits circuit, and was officially changed to Woodbridge & District MCC Ltd in 1983. The club is extremely lucky to own this fantastic venue.

DMCC LTD

Since the club’s involvement in the ACU British Championship in 2015 the club has gone from strength to strength and regularly hosts events for 200 riders and is one of the top ACU motocross clubs in the country. As a club we are continually looking to improve our venue and facilities to make everyone’s attendance at Blaxhall a more enjoyable experience. For the 2021 event the club have once again been busy making changes to the track layout, including track modifications and a new work area for the team’s personnel. Many will be hoping for a repeat of the 2018 event when club member Jake Nicholls took a double race win ahead of Elliott Banks-Browne as the local pairing finished 1st and 2nd Overall. Woodbridge & DMCC Ltd would like to thank all their sponsors, the hard-working club members, friends of the club for their countless hours of dedication over the years and the local landowners and neighbours of the circuit for their support of the event. The History of British Motocross

There is uncertainty about the origins of motocross but it is likely that it began in 1914 when the Scott Trial was started by Alfred Angas Scott, owner and founder of The Scott Motorcycle Company. The Scott Trial was held on the Yorkshire moors in Northern England and after World War I test riders of new

www.rhlactivities.com

British motorcycles started racing against each other on off-road factory courses. The French came up with the term ‘moto cross’ to describe this off-road racing and the first recorded Motocross competition was on Camberley Heath in Surrey, England on 29 March 1924.

About the British Motocross Championship

1951 saw the introduction of the British Motocross Championship. The British Motocross Championship is organised into classes of MX1 and MX2. MX1 is for 251cc to 450cc (four stroke) and MX2 for 175cc to 250cc four stroke motorcycles. In 2007 an additional youth class, the MXY2 class, was added to the programme at selected rounds. A Veterans series was introduced in 2009 with just two rounds but the demand for places was so high

that from 2011 the Veterans series will have three rounds, held over six races. Now looking at the 2021 season the British Motocross Championship has welcomed a number of new sponsors to the series and becoming the Revo ACU British Motocross Championship Fuelled by Gulf Race Fuels with RHL Activities at the helm as the promoters of the Official ACU British Motocross Championship.
