Hello and welcome to round two of the Thor British Youth Nationals. Following an action packed opening round at Culham near Oxford, it is good to have headed north to Brampton near Carlisle to continue the 2017 tour. The opening round of the series saw some outstanding racing across all classes, and for me it was especially great to see the stand out battles in the Open class and Big Wheel 85cc class. The track was in prime condition thanks to Rob Woods and his team, who did an outstanding job throughout the Maxxis British Championship event we ran and round one of the Thor British Youth Nationals; we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did. As we arrive at Brampton I think we can say it’s clear that we have a lot of talent and motivation across all classes, and can expect some surprise results throughout the rest of the season. All eyes will be on Culham overall winners Wal Beaney, Charlie Heyman, Dominic Lancett, Rossi Beard and Howard Wainwright to see if they can retain their championship leads or whether the title fights will really commence and other young guns can step it up this weekend. The Brampton track is sandy, and we look forward to seeing who can make the best use of the terrain across the five races for each category. Over the years since RHL Activities took over the Thor British Youth Nationals we have seen it grow from strength to strength with the very best junior riders in the UK battling it out for victory in each respective championship class. The series continues to be the stepping-stone to World Championship events at youth level, while preparing riders for the Maxxis British Championship and beyond. Here at RHL Activities we look forward to growing the series and continue to be the best youth championship in Europe, especially by bringing in interest from sponsors from outside of the sport such as Towergate Insurance, who I’m pleased to say are working closely with us, while supporting the Thor British Youth Nationals. I would like to thank each and every one of you for your continued support and I hope you all have a great weekend at Brampton.

ROSSI BEARD
RIDER CATCH-UP Rossi Beard is aiming to continue his Thor British Youth Nationals campaign where he left off at Culham as we head to Brampton, Cumbria for the second stop of the series after walking away from the opening round of the championship with the overall win in the 125cc class, which had a strong line-up of riders providing some top class racing battles. Rossi first began competing at national level when he was racing the junior 65cc class, and the youngster won the 85cc Big Wheel championship last year. We caught up with the 14-year-old to find out how he’s getting on with the big bike. Rossi following your championship title win in the 2016 Thor British Youth Nationals Big Wheel 85cc class, you have made the step up to the 125cc class this season and have already shown how competitive you are, can you tell us how you are finding the bigger bike? “After last year winning the Big Wheel 85cc British Championship, I felt very confident moving up. My bike was great and Planet Suspension had it handling at its best.” Looking back to Round one at Culham, which saw you take the overall win in the 125cc class, what were your thoughts on the track and how you did? “I was very pleased with my results and it was a great start to the champi-
onship. The track was very fast and was very enjoyable.” There were some superb battles throughout the weekend between you, Callum Mitchell & Josh Peters. How was it for you and did you feel there is anything you can improve on or practice ready for Round 2? “Coming into the first round it wasn’t the best, I had only ridden three times before the weekend as I was ill for a month before the first round and wasn’t able to train on my bike or at the gym.” Round two sees the series head to Brampton, Cumbria, which is a popular track for the series. What are your thoughts on the circuit and your plans for the next round to push to keep the championship title? “I’m looking forward to the next round at Brampton, as I like the track; it gets rough and technical and I feel confident in the rougher conditions.” Looking to the rest of the championship, what will your approach be? “Hopefully I will keep the lead in the 125cc class and do my best against the 250s in the other championships I am competing in.” What is it like balancing school and riding in the Thor British Youth Championships? “My school is great about me having time off for when I need to practice and they support me through it. I manage to keep up with my work that I miss and hope to pass my GCSEs” 6
Who is your all time racing hero and the reason why? “I grew up watching Carl Fogarty’s hell for leather from the age of two and have loved bikes ever since. I started training with Danny Tollet (NMA) from the auto days - he has helped me with my riding ever since and has inspired me a lot as well.” Why do you enjoy racing the Thor British Youth Nationals? “RHL has done a great job running the events and I enjoy the amount of racing there is as they are always the best races of the year.” Do you get to train in between race meetings and if you do what do you do to train? “I started training at a boxing gym at the beginning of the year, but after becoming ill, I couldn’t go to the gym at the start of the season.” Lastly, and perhaps the most important question, how did you get into motocross? “I have always been around bikes as my dad was a former superbike champion at Aintree. I started on a bike at the age of three and have been riding ever since. I began racing from the age of six.” If you’d like to see Rossi and the rest of the Thor British Youth Nationals riders in action the next round takes place on 15th & 16th April at Brampton, Cumbria.

KICK-OFF AT CULHAM RECAP! ROUND
1
The Thor British Youth Nationals championship kicked off the 2017 season at Culham MX Park in Oxfordshire on March 18 and 19 where Wal Beaney, Charlie Heyman, Dominic Lancett, Rossi Beard and Howard Wainwright took the overall wins for the season opener. With a strong line up of junior 65cc riders, including a number of newcomers to the championship, it was a not clear who would end up clinching a podium finish at this former Grand Prix circuit, with some superb racing throughout the field. Wal Beaney had it pinned in all races with consistent finishes to be able to walk away from the opening round of the year in the lead with four wins out of five motos and second overall went to a hard fighting Billy Moriaty. Finley Evans, Ollie Colmer and Fin Wilson completed the top five. In the Small Wheel 85cc class it was a battle to the chequered flag for frontrunners Charlie Heyman and Alfie Jones. Heyman, who is certainly one to watch this season, managed to take four out of the five moto wins with Jones managing to clinch the first race victory on Sunday. Returning rider Vinnie Guthrie took third on the podium with Raife Broadley and Bailey Johnston rounding out the top five in the category. The Big Wheel 85cc class provided some superb duels throughout the five-race format at the Culham circuit.
Dominic Lancett was on it with three wins and two second places to take the overall victory. Cullen Scott, Bobby Bruce, James Smith and Lewis Wood gave it their all to take the top five positions. There was certainly some epic racing for the spectators from the 125cc class with its deep field of talent fighting it out for supremacy. The battle went down to the wire in the final of five races on Sunday to determine who would walk away with the top spot and with it the 125cc class championship lead. With just a one-point advantage, Rossi Beard took the overall win for the event with Callum Mitchell taking second. Josh Peters, Drew Anderson and Ike Carter concluded the top five positions in the class for the first round. Concluding the weekend was the Open class, which also produced some edge of seat moments. In particular race two on Saturday was a highlight, where Jed Etchells, Joe Cadwallader and Tom Grimshaw were hard at it for the second position. Eventually Etchells took second behind Wainwright, who had stretched out a near nine-second lead. In a weekend that saw him take his first Thor British Youth Nationals moto win, as well as his first overall, Wainwright took the lead in the Open class championship with three wins out of five races, followed by Tom Grimshaw in second, Jed Etchells in third, Joe Cadwallader in fourth and Aaron-Lee Hanson taking fifth position. 10
Taking the Apico Factory Racing Holeshot Awards for round one of the Thor British Nationals series, which are chosen from one of the five races during each weekend, was Wal Beaney in the 65cc class, Bailey Johnston in the SW 85cc class, Cullen Scott in the BW 85cc class, Rossi Beard in the 125cc class, and Howard Wainwright in the Open class. “The weekend was good and it was a great start to the championship. The track wasn’t the roughest, but it was very fast and flowing, which meant there were a lot of very fast battles and it was hard to pass. I am very pleased with my results and I am hoping to continue to do the same throughout the year,” said Rossi Beard, winner of the 125cc class. “The weekend was a really good one for me. Once again Gareth and the RHL crew put on a mega meeting and the track was awesome. It felt amazing winning my first ever Thor British Youth National race and then also winning two more and getting the overall - I couldn’t have asked for a better weekend. Hopefully now I can carry this momentum on to the next round and try to keep the championship lead,” said Howard Wainwright, Open class winner. We look forward to seeing the action this weekend and see the best youth riders in the UK battle it out for their championships.
I RIDE TO WIN
Champions demand superb performance and Geomax tyres deliver. In the last MXGP season alone we helped riders secure three GP wins, nine podiums and 23 top-3 finishes. No wonder top riders choose Dunlop tyres again and again.

ROUND 2 DUNLOP TYRE CHOICE Dunlop is a valued supporter of the Thor British Youth Nationals and the tyre manufacturer is pleased to be involved with the premier junior series where youngsters cut their teeth as they progress through the ranks.
FOR ROUND TWO AT BRAMPTON CHECK OUT WHAT DUNLOP SAYS FOR TYRE CHOICE: Brampton consists of fast straights, climbs and drops with big jumps, technical corner sections and rough n’bumpy sections. It’s a combination of natural hills and cambers with man-made jumps. The best choice would be the Dunlop Geomax MX3S in the front and rear, or the Dunlop Geomax MX3S in the front, with the MX11 in the rear
With this in mind Dunlop, who make tyres for a range of vehicles while priding themselves on their racing technology and success, has provided some top tips for BYN riders on the perfect tyre choice for this year’s six-round series. The company is continually striving for success in all arenas, and the tyre technology available to riders in a range of sizes, such as the revolutionary Geomax MX-3S, have been developed with factory riders around the world, meaning that what’s good for the pros is also good for the juniors.
