Absolution An Alternative Experience of Materiality and Atmosphere. This design research project is explicit for the development of independent thought through an alternative experience of materiality and atmosphere - to that of commercial space by re-establishing the hierarchy of the five primary senses. Independent thought is defined as the conscious decision making of and for one self. Investigated through four key concepts; landscape architecture, atmosphere, materiality and social context - this research project intends to rend the unconscious manipulation that ideologies employ to control or exploit the individual for their specific agenda.

Welcome to my Country An Invitation to understand Culture Welcome to My Country is a conceptual design that’s purpose is to educate the public (through interaction of physical forms in space and invite self-education) about Aboriginal culture. Interaction with designed components within the space will allow the public to engage in the culture of the Boonwurrung people. This is limited information about such a complex culture, I understand this and ambition that my design will create a curiosity amongst individuals and entice them to do their own research and educate themselves. The design of the landscape draws attention to the current indigenous community and also educates and invites the general public to engage with cultural, social and environmental conditions in a deeper context.

Investigation into Natural Disaster Evacuation Methods:

Analysis post 2011 Tsunami

Why did the evacuation methods in the 2011 Japan Great Eastern Earthquake and Tsunami fail?

The aim of this research is to determine the evacuation methods planned pre 2011 tsunami and investigate why they were so ineffective when the natural disaster hit. Hashikami, Japan, is the specific site that will be investigated. Through mapping a clear understanding will be identified concerning the evacuation ‘safe zones’ and the transportation to these zones. Allen and Bryant (2011) show that the roads play a vital role in reaching higher ground, especially in time of crisis; due to visibility and flat terrain. Secondary, an investigation will also be conducted concerning visibility of the perceived threat. Due to topography, buildings and/or structures the residents of certain areas were unable to see the threat of the tsunami causing a lack of education to the perceived threat inevitably resulting in “delayed or non-evacuation” (Fraser, 2012. Pg. 8). This lack of vision, and in turn knowledge, was identified in the GNS Science Report (Fraser, 2012) as one of the primary reasons for deaths in the 2011 tsunami.

MR OFFICE RMIT Rooftop Situated eight stories high, RMIT building 8 rooftop provides an educational and environmentally sustainable space flooded with potential. M R. OFFICE presents a roof garden that acts as a counter-agent to the busy university and city life below. Comprising of two educational spaces, holding up to 20 students per section, it is both an active and passive green space linked to a major common room for students at a roof top level. Planter boxes are arranged through the central zone, segregated by plot types, allowing for scientific research and human interaction. While the soft-scape takes centre point, a large shed housing all gardening materials is located on the northern end of the courtyard designed to capture water runoff with its eco designed roof. Each garden is fixed to a vertical wall, providing stability, flow of wind and a cascading plot as each membrane is stacked to capitalise on space and sunlight. Backing onto each plot, a sitting area is allocated for garden interaction and community engagement. These modules are placed to allow optimal sun exposure and hydration dependant on requirements with Urban Agriculture located next to an onsite tap for easy maintenance and the second workshop space, providing students the opportunity to engage with the produce and assist in sustainability and seasonal development. With moist requirements, Meadow is located within early shade line next to the Urban Agriculture, also capitalising on current fixed amenities within the space. We consider this space to be highly interactive and ascetically relevant for onlookers and users. With safety concerns in mind, we have developed a master plan that is free from obstruction and questionable activities, wheelchair and all ability friendly that will assist the quality of education and personal wellbeing at RMIT.
