Pub News
We start on a positive note – a number of closed pubs are about to reopen or are proposed for reopening: The White Swan at Harringworth is expected to reopen during May, and just up the road, the Queens Head at Bulwick, a former Peterborough Camra pub of the year, reopened in April. New licensee is Hayley Fisher – the pub can be contacted on 01780 450738. Also in the area, the Black Horse at Elton reopened in late March. The Exeter Arms At Barrowden has changed hands – Martin Allsopp who has been there for 11 years will be relocating the brewery to Leicestershire but does not expect to change the name – he’ll also be offering a service to beer festival organisers. New licensees are Joanne and Tom Wade, former regulars at the pub, who expect to be open for business in early May. They plan to provide a variety of real ales. More good news from Rutland involves the Merry Monk in Oakham which is currently being renovated and the Royal Oak in Uppingham, which has been closed for many months but is now reported to have gained Asset of Community Value status which
Dan, Jess, Joanne and Tom Wade of The exeter arms, Barrowden. should help preserve it as a pub, at least for the short term. Oakham’s Hornblower Hotel was due to reopen in April after refurbishment. Market Deeping’s Boundary fish bar is offering live music in the river garden during the town’s Raft Race day (7 August), they’re also offering free grub to dads dining there on Fathers’ Day (19 June). The Whistle Stop in Tallington has changed hands – new licencees are Sam and Steve Hill. The Jubilee Garage in Bourne held its first beer festival at the end of March – £1,200 was raised for Peterborough City Hospital’s Oncology ward. New licensees of the Bull at Rippingale, David and Louise Lewis are to open an Archers themed tearoom/meeting place, add garden seating and a small farm shop, as well as upgrading the letting rooms. The pub is already home to the village post office four days
per week. The Danish Invader in Empingham Road on the outskirts of Stamford has received a major refit and appears to be constantly busy. For the moment it’s the only pub in that area of the town, though a new Marston’s outlet looks set to open shortly within the Stamford Manor development. The Green Man is now in the hands of George Sakkalli who also has the Golden Pheasant at Etton and the Exeter Arms at Helpston. The recently closed Atrium in Grantham is to benefit from a £750,000 revamp buy owner Amber Taverns, and will reopen as the Sir Isaac Newton. The previous pub of the same name (on Harlaxton Road) was demolished to make way for a KFC. Cask and craft beers will be available along with along with a full sports package, but no food or children. The new Beerheadz micro pub finally opened on 24 March – initially four real ales will be on offer along with three Continued over

Pub News (continued) real ciders and a selection of craft beers.Villagers of nearby Marston and Hougham have now set up a limited company in order to purchase the closed Thorold Arms – details at www.save.thethoroldarms.co.uk Brennan’s bar in Winsover Road, Spalding is for sale with Longstaffs for £119,950. Plans to convert the Witham Tavern in Boston, which has been closed for the past nine months, to flats have been unanimously rejected by the local council, suggesting the proposal would lead to the “loss of an existing community or social facility”. Having already been converted to a cocktail bar, Browns (formerly the Indian Queen & Three Kings) has applies to become a ‘sexual entertainment’ venue. The long closed Great Northern in the town is to be opened by Red Cow licensee, Mohammad Qutab. The Duke of York closed suddenly in April and is likely to make way for flats. The Bateman’s owned Coach & Horses has been put up for sale for £150,000 with www.poyntons.com Peterborough’s Charters café bar is celebrating 25 years. The former Dutch barge, home to the East restaurant as well as the celebrated real ale and live entertainment hub was purchased by Paul Hook in 1991, sailed across the North Sea and along the Nene, before being ‘sunk’ to get it under the town bridge, then refloated into its current position. Nowadays Charters is part of the wide Oaka Group, which includes The Brewery Tap, the Bartons Arms in Birmingham and the Mansion
The Blue Bell, Dogsthorpe. House in Kennington, London. The pub combines good beer, including ‘house’ Oakham Ales, with authentic Thai food in a good city centre location handy for shops and the football ground. The upstairs East restaurant offers views across the river and the sizeable riverside beer garden. Beer festivals are held at Easter and in August, and a special celebration is planned for September. Long time licensee of the Dragon in Werrington, Stuart Simmonds left the pub during April. He’s currently working with brother, Andy at the nearby Ploughman, but is interested in other opportunities locally. Also departing Werrington for pastures new are Gill and Chris from the Cock Inn. Elgoods were busy readying the Blue Bell at Dogsthorpe for reopening as we went to press. This lovely old building deserves a better future after it had been allowed to deteriorate before closing a couple of years back. Another pub that’s seen better days is the Duck & Drake in Yaxley, but the arrival of Colin Payne (who also has the Peacock in Peterborough) should see a major improvement to its prospects. The Ruddy Duck at
Peakirk is the new meeting venue for the Peterborough Motorcycle Action Group (peterborough.mag-uk.org). Pubs no more: The long closed Silver Jubilee in Bretton, Peterborough was the subject of an arson attack in February. The former Old Kings Head in Kirton which dates from 1599 is to be renovated thanks to a Heritage Enterprise grant and is likely to eventually reopen as an artisan café and B&B. The closed Rose & Crown at Holbeach St Marks is for sale for £315,000 with www.hillandclark.co.uk with permission granted for conversion. After losing its licence, the Jolly Crispin in Boston is now operating as a B&B. Plans to demolish the Lord Nelson at Morton, near Bourne have finally been approved. The Grade II listed former George & Dragon at Billingborough is for sale as a private residence with Winkworths for £279,000. In Peterborough, the former Rose/Embe Restaurant (previously the Fountain/Glass Onion) is to become Creations Dessert Lounge, offering waffles, crepes and cookies.

O n t h e ( Ti m e ) l a s h A visit to the pubs seen, however briefly, in Doctor Who. The George 8 Great Queen Street Holborn London WC2B 5DH 020 7404 8888 www.thegeorgeholborn.com Over the last 10 or so years, we have seen an increase in shops, theatres and floor space in office blocks converted into pubs. But in London, ‘thanks’ to the Luftwaffe, this is nothing new. Holbrook House (originally Elizabethan House), an office complex at 8-18 Great Queen Street, is one such postwar building that was developed to include a pub. Actually, it includes two, The Hercules Pillars and The George, which replaced earlier pubs of the same name, when the site, which included the bomb damaged Kingsway Theatre, was redeveloped in the early 1960s. The George was briefly seen in the 1966 Doctor Who story The War Machines, in a still image depicting a deserted London, which was taken from the front of the Grand Connaught Rooms opposite. Despite the modern exterior, giving the impression of a wine
bar, The George looks like a traditional pub on the inside with dark wood and good quality furnishings. Although now open plan around an L-shaped bare (it originally comprised a saloon and a snack bar), there are still cosy spaces to have a quiet drink. Keg beers include Kronenbourg 1664, Amstel, Camden Hells and Camden Pale, while the three hand pumps were serving Sharp’s Doom Bar, timothy Taylor Landlord and Harvey’s Sussex Best Bitter. The latter, priced £4.40 a pint, was
on good form. Food is served at 12-4pm and 5-9pm with a menu featuring a variety of pub classics, all at reasonable prices. Great Queen Street is home to Freemasons’ Hall, while a pub called The Freemasons’ Tavern once sat on the site now occupied by the Grand Connaught Rooms. It’s a fair bet that The George was named after the future George IV, a Masonic Grand Master between 1791 and 1812. And given how classy the pub is, I’m sure His Majesty would have been happy with the association.

RaIlRovING: STaMFoRD Stamford will be familiar to most as one of Britain’s loveliest stone towns. Its sheer number of pubs and pub heritage is still cherished by Stamfordians. Over 70 were open back in the 1950s, and while the number is now in the 20s, it’s still not bad for a town of just over 20,000 inhabitants. CrossCountry offers an hourly train service from Peterborough, with a journey time of just 12 minutes for an adult day return fare of £8.10 The station is surrounded by a housing estate, but if you follow the signs towards the town centre, there’s a strong temptation to stop immediately amid the grand surroundings of the George Hotel in Station Road. As we’d embarked on one of our usual early starts, we elected to leave the George ‘til last, and instead took a left turn across the water meadows and a
short walk up Castle Dyke into Sheepmarket, where there’s a choice of four pubs with early opening times. To the right is the local JD Wetherspoon, The Stamford Post, an obvious choice for breakfast. Opened in 2013 in the former offices of the Stamford Mercury, the publishing heritage is evident with a variety of newspaper headlines and artefacts, and an industrial feel to the place. The pub was fairly busy even at 10am (it opens at 8am, alcohol from 9am), mainly with diners and coffee drinkers. The beer offering consists of the usual cheap Ruddles (£2.05), national brews and a few more local choices from the likes of Grainstore, Newby Wyke and Milestone, all at £2.49 per pint. Opposite is the London Inn, a substantial original coaching inn, also popular with diners and
open from 9am. The breakfast offering includes genuine local Lincolnshire sausages, which at just £3.50 is cheaper than The Stamford Post. There’s a bit of everything here – real fires and wooden flooring combine with more modern pleasures such as big screen entertainment and live music every weekend. Six real ales are usually available, on this occasion two from Fullers, two from Oakham Ales plus Doom Bar and the bargain Harvest Pale at £2.30. The rear exit of the pub leads to the Cosy Club, technically more of a restaurant but offering a couple of well kept real ales, both from Milestone on our visit. Palatial surroundings belie the building’s history as a postal sorting office, and large skylights give a light airy feel. Next door is the Golden Fleece – a nod to the town’s livestock market heritage.
RNB37_Layout 1 05/05/2016 22:35 Page 11
This Everards-owned pub has long been associated with live music, and bands still play every Friday and Saturday night, with weekly karaoke on Thursdays. A locals pub, there’s usually lively banter to be enjoyed at the bar, and another value breakfast offering alongside Everards Tiger/ Original, a guest beer (Bath Golden Hare) and a real cider from Westons. To the right, a passage leads to the Enterprise-owned Millstone, also run by Golden Fleece licensee Mick Purvis. He’s keen to restore the reputation of the pub that lost its live music license under previous ownership. He’s planning to reconfigure the pub which still gets very busy particularly at weekends, and he reassured us that the beer lines would soon be working again, not that we were complaining about our London Pride and Bombardier Glorious English which came instead straight from the barrel. It’s another cracking building (one of the oldest pubs in town), and deserves a better future. Pub grub is served, and it is hoped that live music can resume shortly. Opposite the Millstone are the premises of the original
The Crown.
Millstone. Melbourn’s Brewery, now owned by Samuel Smiths. The brewery remains intact many years after closure, and was partially converted in to a museum, before a two storey bar, oozing history and artefacts such as original sales legers and ‘mash books’ was opened, known simply as Melbourn Bros. Beer is still produced on the premises, the whiff of brewing drifts across the town a couple of times per year, but sadly the beer goes for bottling, mainly for export. There are plenty of bottled options at the bar, along with Sam Smiths keg range and a hand pump serving Old Brewery Bitter ‘from
the wood’ at just £1.88 per pint, ironically brewed many miles away in Tadcaster, and on this particular visit barely drinkable. A left turn takes you into Red Lion Square. In one corner are twin establishments of the Mick Thurlby owned Knead Group. The former Periwig pub is in the process of becoming Paten & Co again after a number of name changes over the decades. The new theme for the pub is still in discussion. Across the road is the Crown – a quality hotel and bar with a restaurant known as the Red Cow within. The Crown is renowned for its good food and well kept beers including TT Landlord, JHB and a beer under Knead’s own Stamford Brewery Co brand, brewed exclusively by staff members at Hopshackle in Market Deeping. Despite its upmarket feel, the Crown is dog friendly in the bar area – there are even dog biscuits on offer. A right turn onto the cobbles takes you around All Saints Church into Scotgate, once the Great North Road and home to a number of coaching inns. At the traffic lights a left hand turn takes you into West Street, where just beyond Waitrose, at the junction with Foundry Road, lies the Jolly Brewer, a pub often Continued over
RNB37_Layout 1 05/05/2016 22:35 Page 12
The Jolly Brewer. regarded as the town’s best beer pub. This 18th century building was taken over a decade ago by Jill Perkins and Dean Baker who have retained the original appeal of the pub – its local feel, gloriously diverse clientele, and pub games which include darts, pool, quiz nights and Stamford own unique pushpenny – but have added a wealth of great real ales and ciders. Dean even has his own brewery (in nearby Ketton), so alongside expertly kept beers form the likes of Brewster’s, Oakham, Magpie and Hopshackle sit a couple of home produced Bakers Dozen brews such as Spanish Inquisition, Jentacular and Electric Landlady. Although launched only last year, the brewery has won awards at Peterborough, Grantham and Rutland beer festivals. A beer festival is held each September. We asked Jill what she thought made the place so special: “The lovely staff and locals,” she said, and asked us not to forget the pub’s signature dish – the Loaded Fries – a happy combination of chips, garlic mayo, bacon and jalapenos. Back onto Scotgate and left at the lights is one of Stamford’s best-known alehouses, the 18th century Green Man. It was surprisingly quiet for a Friday afternoon, but a decent range of beers was on offer from Tydd, Grainstore, Greene King, Fuller’s and Oakham Ales. Locals we spoke with seemed a little unsettled with a recent change of ownership. We hope George
(also of the Golden Peasant at Etton) is receptive to their needs, as the pub has earned a rich pedigree over the years. A hundred yards or so along Scotgate, a flight of steps leads up on the left to New Cross Road, home of the Hurdler. This is another proper boozer with a rich tradition of sports (it’s home to Stamford Bels FC and Stamford College Rugby club), pub games and live entertainment. Open all day this Everards house was given a major makeover a couple of years back and has a sizeable beer garden – a rarity in Stamford. Tiger and Sunchaser are the resident real ales. Back down towards town, along Cliff Road and a left turn into North Street takes you to probably Stamford’s best-known music venue, Mama Liz’s. A previous Peterborough Camra pub of the year, the downstairs Voodoo Lounge has played host to many well known names in the world of rock, blues, dance, poetry and comedy. As we walked in, the Who’s Teenage Wasteland was pumping out off the speakers, providing a great atmosphere to enjoy ales from Oakham and Oldershaws, and engage in pleasant banter with regulars. The soulful feel to the place is enhanced with quirky décor and good Cajun style food. Turning right, with the former Dolphin pub ahead, a right turn into Newgates takes you into Broad Street, home to Stamford’s Friday market. We popped our heads into the Pear Tree (formerly the Lincolnshire Poacher), but with no real ales available we moved immediately onto the Lord Burghley. Another all
day pub, this is in the heart of the town so is usually busy especially on market day. Darts and pushpenny are played here, and it’s host to the annual Glastonburghley event in July, when DJs and bands offer entertainment in aid of the Dosh for Defibs charity. There’s a decent outdoor drinking area with big screen, and guest beer at £3 alongside the TT landlord, Abbot, London Pride, Doombar, ESB and an Oakham ale. Around the corner in St Paul’s Street sits the Tobie Norris, a fantastic traditional pub also part of the Knead group. Parts of the building date back to the 14th century, put it’s only been a pub since 2006, having formerly been home to the RAFA club. The usual Knead offering of pizzas and other quality foods is complemented by excellently kept beers from Adnams, Stamford Brew Co, Nene Valley and other brewers from across Britain. Back towards the town centre and onto the High Street, it’s possible to discern the Kings Head away to the left on Maiden Lane. Dating from the 17th century this tiny but attractive pub features log fires and wooden floors, and enjoys an excellent reputation for its food and fine wines. Landlord David Waycot, a former chef at the George Hotel, enthused over the local fresh produce and seafood that he cooks himself. Somewhat
Tobie Norris.
RNB37_Layout 1 05/05/2016 22:35 Page 13
unusually for a town centre pub, this has the feel of a village local, and the beer offering of Ruddles, Abbot and IPA owes more to David’s personal choice than any tie to that most controversial of East Anglian brewers. At the end of this road, the Stamford Arts Centre is home to the Cellar Bar, but this is an evening only venue (7pm) and had not opened when we arrived. Not to worry, visible across the road is another Samuel Smith house, St Mary’s Vaults. This cosy multi roomed pub often features a welcoming real fire, and friendly staff. Beers are of course very cheap here – the Taddy Lager proved popular with the younger crowd at just £2.18 a pint. On to St Mary’s Hill, back
towards the station and over the town bridge lies the area known as St Martin’s Without, so named as it sat outside the original town walls. We passed the George again to sample the Bull and Swan, another name steeped in Stamford heritage, as it recalls the barbaric sport of bull running which was practised in the town until the early 19th century. It’s a lot calmer round these parts nowadays, and this handsome pub is a homely place with cosy interior, log fires and good food. Beers from Grainstore, Adnams, and Nene Valley are usually available. Sister venue, the William Cecil (formerly the Lady Anne’s Hotel) is further up the road, and the single hand pump serving
Rutland Bitter was not enough to tempt us away from the final destination – the George. The history of this nationally acclaimed establishment is well documented elsewhere (it is claimed that at least three kings have styayed here). Mention of the name can sometimes provoke a reaction from folk who’d rather not pay inflated prices. It does however provide a wonderful environment to end the day with good quality Adnams Broadside, Grainstore DBB and a guest beer from £4.30, not too high a price to pay for wood panelled luxury, good company and even a plate of complimentary nuts and olives. And of course it’s a stone’s throw from the station. Chris Shilling

The Locks Inn Locks lane Geldeston Norfolk NR34 0HE 01508 518414 www.geldestonlocks.co.uk Norfolk is blessed with many great rural pubs, but there can’t be many as tucked away as this one. This 17th century gem lies alongside the River Waveney, which marks the border with Suffolk. Situated between the pretty towns of Beccles and Bungay, the Locks Inn can be hard to find even when you’ve located the village of Geldeston. Reached by way of a mile-long
winding unmade road across the neighbouring marshland (or by river boat), the pub was left stranded in January owing to rising floodwaters Landlord Colin Smith has been in charge at the Locks for the past 10 years, but may be familiar to some for his time at other nationally renowned watering holes: the Fat Cat in Norwich and Oakham Ales’ Birmingham outlet, the Bartons Arms. It’s all a far cry from the city life: “There’s no mains anything,” says Colin almost gleefully about the lack of modern facilities. That doesn’t mean the welcome is anything other than warm. A log
burner sits within an enormous fireplace, the beamed ceilings are low, a piano sits expectantly in the corner and the clay paved flooring is matched by the tables.
RNB37_Layout 1 05/05/2016 22:35 Page 15
“We adapt to the seasons – in winter there are indoor poetry readings and music in front of the fire, with lively outdoor entertainment in summer.” The pub was originally built for the traders of grain, malt, coal and beer moving their wares by wherry vessels along the navigation. Nowadays it’s known for its range of real ales, ciders, home cooked food and live music. On a chilly lunchtime we were soon tucking into bowls of hearty chorizo, tomato and chickpea soup, washed down with tasty local beer from the Grain Brewery. Originally owned by Green Jack brewery, the pub is now a free house offering up to nine real ales, mainly served from the barrel, during the busy summer months. Winter hours are Thursday-Sunday but from April the Locks is open daily from 12 to 11pm. The original central portion of the pub is now flanked by a separate restaurant on one side and function/sports room on the other. Suitable for families and dogs, there’s an enormous green area running up to the waterfront which plays host to weekly live acts and barbecues during the summer including Grainfest in May, Lockstock in June and the annual Beltane Bash at which a wicker man is burnt. The pub is at the junction of footpaths, so expect to see walkers taking refreshment alongside boaters, canoeists, anglers and birdwatchers. Food, including famed homemade pies, is served daily 12-2.30pm and 6-9pm. Curry nights are held on Fridays. The Big Dog ferry operates a serene waterborne option along the three-mile river route from Beccles Lido in around 40 minutes, for an adult fare of £12 return. Chris Shilling

Menorca has much to offer the gourmand – from an abundance of seafood to speciality cheeses and pastries, along with locally produced wines and spirits including malmsey and a grapebased gin. But if you prefer to live on Beer Street, as opposed to Gin Lane, then your choices are largely limited to fizzy lager and nitrogenated bitter. Luckily the island does have a handful of brewers offering hope to the more discerning beer drinker including Sa Bona Birra – a bottleshop and craft brewery in the old captital, Ciutadella –
and Grahame Pearce – a microbrewery attached to Es Moli de Foc, a restaurant in Sant Climent. Founded in 2011, the brewery was named by chef-patron Vicent Vila in memory of his British friend Pearce, a man who, to quote the brewery’s promotional material was renowned for “his wit, his friendship and his delight in good living and drinking.” Construction of the brew plant – which is expected to produce 70,000 litres of beer this year – was overseen by two German brewmasters who
developed its initial recipes, which have been refined further by Head Brewer, Roger Vila, Vicent’s son. Originally planning to go into computing, Roger trained as a Certified Brewmaster in Berlin, satisfying the entry requirements by having completed three months’ of practical brewery experience in the north-west of England, first at Joseph Holt and then The Phoenix Brewery. Grahame Pearce produces three core beers: Lager, Blat – a Belgian-inspired wheat beer, flavoured with coriander and

orange peel – and Brown Ale, an easy-drinking English style bitter. A one-off beer is also brewed each year, which has included a Vienna lager and, during my visit to the brewery in 2015, a stout. Using English fuggles (with German malt), Brown Ale was inspired by its Newcastle badged namesake but after further development, Roger says it’s “not that sweet and caramel like.” All three beers are available across the island in bottles and, with the exception of the lager, are unfiltered and clarified by
gravity. They’ve also become a popular addition to bar fonts across Menorca. “We used to barrel only lager, but for some fairs or parties, such as the annual Oktoberfest in Ferreries, we barrel the other beer or the special brews. We have six dispensers in various restaurants and hotel bars. This year we would like to increase that to 15 dispensers,” explains Roger. A refreshing drop, the crisp, dry lager is a world away from the big brands usually associated with holidays in the Balearics. And while I could find it in
several bars on my resort, Brown Ale seemed to be as rare as hen’s teeth. To satisfy my craving, I asked Roger if I could buy a case of the beer from him. “Sure, that’ll be €16.” A little taken aback, I queried the figure. Roger confirmed: “Yes, 16 bottles, a Euro a bottle.” He needn’t have worried; I wasn’t looking for a discount. In fact, given how his beers had revived my taste buds, I would have happily paid more.
