Pub News

Visitors to the 2016 Peterborough Beer Festival enjoyed fine weather and turned out in good numbers – around 30,000 attended over the five days. 2017 will mark the 40th year of the event and will take place on the embankment between August 22 and 26. Peterborough city centre is set to get a new “casual bar” soon – Puzzles is due to open in the former “literacy hub” in Bridge Street. Part of the Solstice pub in Northminster has been converted into a “contemporary family orientated café-bar” – Harry’s will be open from 8am during the week for coffee and pastries, with snacks and afternoon tea available later in the day, closing at 11pm. The Fenman at Stanground is currently closed awaiting new tenants. Up the road, the Whittle is now offering a cask ale club on Monday nights, with 20p off a pint. The lease of Cock Inn at Werrington has reportedly been purchased by a consortium of local businessmen. It’s currently

The saga of the Hand & Heart in Highbury Street is now over. The pub was purchased by real ale fan Michael Evans. Current licensee Paul Brammer remains in situ, and will run the pub as before, though now

presiding over a free house. The Blue Boar at Eye is open again after a brief period of closure and a minor makeover. Food is served daily alongside four well-kept real ales. The Railway at Whittlesey is also open again. New licensee Anthony Parker has transformed the pub environment and will be reintroducing food in the New Year. Closed since 2012, the Fox at Folksworth is destined to be reborn under the management team behind Clarkes in Peterborough. A relaxed drinking area is to be complemented with a fine dining restaurant area seating up to 80 diners. The King’s Head at Apethorpe near Oundle is for sale with www.fleurets.com In nearby Southwick, the Shuckburgh Arms in now in the hands of Tom and Tracey Thomason who have moved up from Richmond, west London. In Bourne Archie’s Bar (formerly the Firkin) closed during the summer. The property is for sale with www.longstaff.com JD Wetherspoon is promising to invest £1.5m in the town if its planning bid for a new outlet in North Street is approved. The final Ripping-Ale festival was a near sell-out, with proceeds going to LIVES first responders and the Air Ambulance. After 10 successful years, Dean Baker and Jill Perkins are leaving the Jolly Brewer in Stamford to concentrate on their brewing interests (Bakers Dozen). The lease is now for sale for around £100k. The former Riverside Cafe is to be redeveloped as flats. Long-term licensees at The Crown, Great

The Lakeside Bar at Tallington Lakes is now in the hands of local chef, Liam McLay and Helen Caine – formerly at Orton Hall Hotel. They’ve introduced regular Friday live music, bingo, quiz and specialist food nights, real ales (including a seasonal guest) and an annual beer festival. The bar is open daily for breakfast from 8.30am. After a major refit of the kitchen, The Castle Inn at Castle Bytham will be recommencing food service from early December. After a long period of closure, and major refurbishment the Ship at Pinchbeck opened again in the summer. Open TuesdaySunday, it’s proving very popular with diners, and landlady Fleur Cottingham (previously at the Fortescue Arms, Billingborough) is introducing themed food/drink evenings, starting with a Beaujolais Nouveau night on 17 November. After a complete rebuild, the Red Lion in

Sutterton’s Thatched Cottage failed to reach the £300k asking price and was re-auctioned and sold for £185k in September. Planning permission has been granted for a Co-op store to build on part of the pub car park at the Pincushion Inn in Wyberton, near Boston. Award-winning Boston music venue, the Axe & Cleaver, closed its doors suddenly in early October. Chris Shilling

THE ALEBULANCE TO THE RESCUE Go to any classic car show and you will always hear people get excited when they spot an old Morris Minor as either they used to have one, learned to drive in an example or an uncle or grandad owned one. In a recent magazine survey, the Morris Minor topped the readers’ poll and of course, the fleet extends beyond the poached-egg shape saloon to the half-timbered delights of the Traveller, plus the handy light commercial vans. At one time the vans were an everyday sight with sizeable fleets in Royal Mail and British Telecom liveries, but now you see fewer of the vans about on a regular basis reflecting the hard life that many led. However, in the Stamford area one such charming survivor is to be observed earning its keep – ensuring that the ale is delivered

from brewery to pub. When Tim Nicol and Simon Watson set up the Stoney Ford Brew Company at Ryhall, they wanted a distinctive company vehicle for local deliveries of their small batch draught ales – and what better than a 1970 Morris Minor van? Named the Alebulance, the van has become something of a celebrity whether pottering around the towns and villages or dropping off barrels at beer festivals. The Alebulance can carry eight full firkins of beer to pubs in a 25-mile radius and is also fitted with a towbar to enable it to pull a trailer for bigger loads. The company’s website even has a page devoted to Alebulance so that readers can keep up with the latest news (www.stoneyfordbrewco.co.uk). I caught up with the Alebulance and Tim Nicol at the

annual Easton on the Hill Car, Bike and Scooter Show, a sociable affair held in the car park and grounds of the Blue Bell pub in the heart of the village, where it was parked on display next to Tim’s AustinHealey Sprite. Both vehicles feature the classic A-series engine, so Tim knows what he’s dealing with here. Tim is among those who learned to drive in a Morris Minor and he learnt maintenance in his school cadet force, so he is able to carry out regular work on the Alebulance to keep it fit for delivery duties. It is even fitted with a flashing orange light on top of the cab for emergencies, while the legend on the back reads: “No beer left in this van overnight”. Look out for the Alebulance on your travels. David Brown

Rose & Crown Old Church Rd Snettisham Norfolk PE31 7LX 01485 541382 roseandcrownsnettisham.co.uk Travelling along the A149 between Kings Lynn and Hunstanton, it’s easy to miss the pretty village of Snettisham as it’s by-passed, but it’s well worth a short detour through the village to check out this great family pub. Surprisingly large, the 14th century pub boast two bars and three separate eating areas plus a glorious walled garden (formerly the village bowling green) and children’s climbing equipment. That’s the joy of this

place, situated in a quiet side road near the parish church – it really ticks all the boxes. The low ceilinged rooms have oak beams, quarry tiles and real fires, and are connected by a narrow winding

passageway. The walls are adorned with sporting memorabilia, including the pub’s cricket team and the landlord’s personal trophies. Dogs and, of course,

well-behaved children are welcome. Don’t expect beers from local microbreweries though, the owners seem to prefer nationally recognised brands. Five regular well-kept beers are usually available from Adnams, Marston’s, Woodforde’s, and Fullers plus a guest beer and real ciders all served by pleasant staff. There’s also a good selection of wines and malt whiskies. Great quality locally sourced food is served all day every day (until 9pm), and is reasonably priced. Examples include Chilli & Garlic Squid Spaghetti (£13), pressed Cromer Crab Salad (£13.50) and Pigeon and Pancetta Wellington (£7.50). In season local mussels and oysters can be enjoyed along with Brancaster samphire and asparagus. For the less adventurous, dishes such as Beer Battered Haddock & Chips, All Day Breakfast and Sunday roasts are equally popular. Breakfasts are available to non-residents from 7.30am There’s a spacious car park, a garden room, and upstairs are 16 well-appointed letting rooms. The folk at the Good Pub Guide certainly appreciate the atmosphere and the food as they regularly list it in their Top 10 pubs (including the new 2017 book), and awarded it their Pub of the Year in 2015. Bar opening hours are 11am-11pm daily (1210.30pm Sundays).

No LoNger BeyoNd the PaLe The nearest I ever got to Watney’s Red Barrel was drinking in the Palmerston Arms, which in the late 90s still had one of the red plastic fonts attached to the bar. Just there for novelty value, it was certainly a conversation piece as older drinkers would regale me with negative tales of the keg bitter – telling stories too rude to be printed here. With the Watney’s name long swallowed up by mergers and takeovers, the last thing I expected to find in The Bumble Inn was its Pale Ale on cask. But there it was, demanding my attention, and I’m pleased to say nothing like I expected. It’s the latest relaunched beer brand from Brands Reunited, the firm that last year revived Nottingham’s Home Ales. Nick Whitehurst, co-owner of the business, grew up close to Home Ale’s brewery in the suburb of Daybrook. His father worked there during the holidays, so you can understand his desire to bring back the brand but why on Earth would anyone want to revive Whatney’s? “Once we had the idea to look at heritage brands it made

sense to look to add scale to the idea,” explains Nick, “and they don’t come any bigger than Watney’s. Back in the day, it was Britain’s biggest selling beer, shifting over a million barrels a year.” The Home Ales and Watney’s trademarks were acquired from Heineken, and while the brewers previously produced beers called Robin Hood and Little John, and Pale Ale respectively, Nick and co-owner Shaun Goode have “deliberately steered away from the old products, and instead we are looking to recreate the brands for today’s drinker. Tastes change, the availability of ingredients change and drinkers are looking for much more now than they were historically.” But despite that, “We have had a really good response from new and old consumers alike,” says Nick. “Lots of people have got in touch who used to work at the breweries or drink the brands, and wished us all the best which has been great. We had a chap at our Watney’s launch that used to work in the old brewery and we really enjoy hearing all the old stories of the industry in days gone by.”

Nick Whitehurst and shaun Goode enjoy a pint of Home Ales in its Nottingham birthplace and the first beers from the revived brands.

Although there are plans to invest in a brewery of their own, Home Ales are currently brewed by Oldershaw of Grantham while Watney’s is calling the Sambrook’s brewery in Battersea home. “Tim and Kathy who own Oldershaw’s are friends of mine and helped us a lot in the early days, trying out different recipes and helping us sell through sample brews,” explains Nick. “In London it was even more important that we made great beer given some of the negative publicity around Watney’s in years gone by. We were introduced to Duncan Sambrook who has a great reputation for the quality of his beer. It was an easy decision for us and equally Duncan was enthusiastic about working with us to see what impact Watney’s could have on the beer market.” There are more beers to come from Homes Ales and Watney’s and “we have two more brands to launch which we can’t mention just yet. Everything takes longer than you would like but we had to be patient and wait for things to come together which they did, and we are delighted with the outcome.”

March is a railway town and it seems that everyone you speak to there has either worked in the industry, or has a relative or friend that once did. Of course the days when this unassuming Cambridgeshire town could boast Europe’s largest marshalling yards are long gone, though there’s still plenty of action at the station end of the town. A mere 15 minutes from Peterborough by CrossCountry Trains will set you back £7.60 on an adult day return. Disembarking from the train, it’s worth taking a moment to appreciate the efforts of a group of enthusiasts who have been restoring the station buildings to their former glories. Crossing the bridge to the right and out of the station, you’d expect that

one of two establishments immediately visible would be awaiting your custom, but alas, both the Station Hotel and the Plate & Platter (formerly Wades) appeared to be deserted and/or closed. Unperturbed, our small party headed off down Station Road to the Coachmakers Arms. Open from 10am, this friendly local has, it seems, experienced a chequered history, though it was in the throes of refurbishment (the painters were literally in) and presented a positive outlook. Real ales in the form of Greene King Abbot, IPA and Adnams Lighthouse were perfectly acceptable and keenly priced at just £2.40 and £2.50. Better still if real cider is your choice of drink as this was priced at just

£1.80. The group of regulars were keen to recommend the breakfast, which is also good value at £4.50, they were also quick to engage this band of strangers, recommending other vital stop offs for the pub crawler. Turning left towards town as you leave the pub, and a quick right into the unlikely looking Robingoodfellows Lane leads you to Buffs – a former working men’s club, now a free house with another friendly welcome. Greene King beers are also the order of the day here at just £2.30 on a Friday (otherwise £2.70/£2.80), and there are rolls and other snacks available along with regular entertainment in the form of live music, quizzes, bingo and comedy nights.

Across the car park in Dartford Road, the former Hippodrome theatre/cinema can easily be spotted. Retaining the name, this now houses the local JD Wetherspoon, and what a superb job they’ve made of it. Open from 8am, it was bustling at midday with diners and drinkers enjoying the 10 real ales from £1.79, unusually six of which were from a single brewery (Wolf). The renovation is so authentic, you feel that a performance could be about to commence at any time – the circle and boxes have been retained, though not as drinking areas. The former screen area features an impressive mural depicting local scenes and history, though rather disappointingly no-one seems to have acknowledged the town’s railway heritage. A left turn brings you to Broad Street. Walking along here to the river, the waterfront is home to arguably the most historic pub in the town, the Ship Inn. This lovely 17th century thatched free house features ancient original bowed beams which were reputedly liberated from a vessel headed for Ely Cathedral. Breakfast is served Wednesday-Sunday at an affordable £4.25 and six well-

kept real ales were available to us, from breweries as diverse as Woodforde’s, Dark Star, Newby Wyke and Thornbridge. A pleasing narrow corridor leads to a small back room with dartboard and a compact outdoor area. On the other side of the bridge a short walk along the bank leads to the Acre (11am11pm) – a tidy but much extended GK pub with IPA, Morlands Original and Woodforde’s Nelson and an extensive food menu. As well as hearty pub food from around £7, diners can also enjoy a Sunday carvery and enjoy the

The ship Inn.

beer garden and patio in a pleasant riverside location. Once called the Rose & Crown, there are plenty of original features. Further along the High Street, the Elgood’s-owned Red Lion had no real beer (or customers), but we’d heard good things about the 16th century Ye Olde Griffin Hotel opposite, so quickly scuttled across the Market Place. Open daily at 9am, the Griffin is a sizeable hotel, but retains plenty of character with wood panelling and individual drinking areas. A cask ale festival was underway so six beers were available from Timothy Taylor, Fuller’s, Greene King, Ringwood,

St Austell and Titanic, all priced at just £2.25. The usual range, it seems, consists more of national brands, but on this day, at least, the beers were on great form. Further along the High Street is George’s (formerly the George Inn), which is run by Nigel Marsh, formerly of the Dog at Chatteris. Four hand pumps are available, but only one was in use on this occasion, dispensing an agreeable Adnams Ghost Ship. George’s has a deliberately more modern feel, and is noted for its food and regular live music. The food is, again, keenly priced, starting at just £2.50 (for an omelette), though the real ale comes it at a rather hefty (for round here) £4. Amid the traditional buildings, the Crossroads-esque Oliver Cromwell Hotel stands as a grim tribute to modern architecture, but we were delighted to see three promising looking beers in the shape of Oakham Citra, Adnams Mosaic, and Camra’s 2016 Champion Beer, Bingham’s Vanilla Stout alongside a range of real ciders. Anticipation soon gave way to jaw dropping

disappointment when the bar steward informed us that the beers were only available to their “sponsors” that day. As none of us could prove our membership of the local Dead Men Walking group, we moved on muttering a variety of unrepeatable comments. Still on the High Street, the Cock Inn was offering Cambridge Bitter from Elgood’s, and a cask of Doombar was hurriedly tapped as we enjoyed the real fire, though the general décor would not please the purist. This pub is closed at lunchtimes Monday-Thursday, but open all day Fridays and weekends. At the end of the High Street, a left turn into St Peter’s Road brought us the final pub on our list – the Rose & Crown. This excellent local, features a range of real ales and ciders plus a perry and food

at lunchtimes and evenings. It’s something of magnet for the discerning drinker – ales from Oakham, St Austell, Brains and Kite brewery were enjoyed, along with friendly banter from the locals. The landlady’s apparent hostility towards the ACV process might suggest an impending change of ownership – hopefully it’ll survive in its current form as a genuine asset of community value. March is not a large town so there was time for a second quick visit to the Ship on the way back to the station, though the two station-side establishments were still not showing any sign of life.

these performances, that will be well worth waiting for. It was a truly wonderful evening with nearly three hours of great music for a modest outlay that was going to help raise funds for a hard-working charity. If only all Friday nights were that good. David Brown Gary Numan: Android in La La Land (DVD/screening dates available from www.numandroid.com)

Irene Rae Stamford Arts Centre, 7 October 2016 It doesn’t seem that many years since I spent a very pleasant lunchtime at Smith’s of Bourne listening to a talented young lady excitedly telling me her plans to follow her ambitions as a singer/songwriter. She loved writing and performing her music and this was the road she was going to follow. After seeing Irene Rae perform in front of an adoring audience at Stamford Arts Centre it is great to report that her plan is progressing very well indeed. Not only did Irene sing and play, she was MC for the evening too and had arranged the event in aid of Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice. With the Ballroom’s seating arranged in a more intimate, club-like setting, it was perfect for a soulful evening with some of the area’s leading exponents of acoustic-based music giving their time and artistic-all to help the good cause. This was the first time I’d seen

Irene play with a band – and what a great set of musicians she has found. Stuart Dixon’s thoughtful guitar playing was a treat, providing subtle backing and non-clichéd solo work that complemented Irene’s songs so well. Roger Innis switched between acoustic and electric bass, and together with Luke Szoltysek on drums, provided the perfect accompaniment, always adding additional colour and support as required. In the past I’ve always seen Irene alone with a guitar, pleasing the followers who know her and her music and often winning over some glass-clutching sceptics standing at the bar too. Irene’s music with her band of happy, handsome men has arrived at an exciting new level. It was great to hear songs like Scream for Silence from her End of Nothing Beginning of Something album as Irene’s voice soared with a fuller, fresh confidence in such exulted company. And the good news is that she will be recording a new album too. On the strength of

In the early 1980s, Gary Numan was one of the biggest names in electronic music, enjoying a string of hit singles and albums, earning fans across the world. However, things weren’t always rosy, with the press seemingly baying for his blood, Numan suffering from depression and, as his career started to slide, coming close to bankruptcy. This feature-length documentary looks at Numan’s life and career, following him, wife Gemma (his biggest fan who even told her careers teacher at school that she wanted to marry her hero) and their three daughters as they move from Kent to California. It’s obvious that Gemma has played a part in Numan’s career resurgence; coaxing him back into the studio, arranging collaborations with the musicians he influenced and – despite her own problems – helping him to cope with Asperger’s. A revealing insight into one of our most misunderstood pop stars, this film is as humorous as it is sensitive, and proves that second chances are possible.
