BILL’S VISIT WAS SIMPLY WIZZARD
Wizzard’s Bill Hunt enjoys a beer with The Frothblowers’ Steve Williams. A founding member of Wizzard and ELO paid a visit to the Peterborough pub that shares its name with his latest band. Keyboardist and horn player Bill Hunt stopped off at The Frothblowers, Werrington to visit co-owner Steve Williams. “Bill is a mate of mine through the Pub History Society,” said
Steve, “ he nipped over to drop off some of his vinyl, T-shirts and have a beer or two.” The frothy ale coloured vinyl, “the world's first double B-side”, features the track El Original Brew – the follow up to Wizzard’s The Carlsberg Special – by Bill’s band the Ancient Order of Frothblowers and The Kentish
Town Song, which is performed by his son Will Hunt and Sundae Club. Members of Bill’s band include his nephew, Wonderstuff’s Miles Hunt, and Wizzard saxophonist Nick Pentelow. Often spotted at beer festivals, real ale fan Bill will be back at The Frothblowers for a few beers on 6 May.

O n t h e ( Ti m e ) l a s h A visit to the pubs seen, however briefly, in Doctor Who. The Castle Victoria Road North Acton London W3 6UL 020 8992 2027 www.castlenorthacton.co.uk Two stops west of Television Centre on the Central Line, North Acton was once home to the BBC’s Television Rehearsal Rooms. Affectionately known as The Acton Hilton, its canteen played host to everyone from the stars of Doctor Who, Dad’s Army and Monty Python to knights of the realm including Sirs Ralph Richardson, Sean Connery and Antony Sher. A famous shot of Liver Birds Nerys Hughes and Polly James sitting on a car park wall was taken out the front as were several press images for Doctor Who, including Elisabeth Sladen and Tom Baker launching his debut series and the photograph above, taken over the road, showing Baker and co-star Lalla Ward with costume designer June Hudson and a Movellan to promote 1979’s Destiny of the Daleks.
With Crossrail coming to Acton Main Line later this year and eventually to nearby Old Oak Common, the area is now considered up-and-coming. As well as The Hilton being demolished to make way for Imperial College London’s halls of residence (named The Costume Store), much of the area has been redeveloped with luxury apartments springing up on every bit of available land. All that is recognisable now from the shot are the shops on the right and the mock Tudor “turret” of The Castle. Built in 1938, this typical interwar
Fuller’s pub once celebrated its most famous customers – Dad's Army writer Jimmy Perry claimed that Arnold Ridley (Private Godfrey) “was always the first out of the door at lunch-time and down to the pub” – with photographs of classic television programmes attached to its wood panelled walls, however recently it’s had a makeover that can only be described as “teenager’s bedroom” with band posters and stickers pasted to the walls. Like other pubs in the chain, the menu has had an overhaul in recent years and while it’s still possible to get a reasonably priced fish finger sandwich here, the pub has gastronomic delusions, serving pricey dishes presented on wooden blocks and chipped enamel plates. The pub’s saving grace is its drinks range, especially its beer choice which includes cans, craft keg and three Master Cellarman accredited hand pumps. London Pride is always on, along with one other Fuller’s beer plus an interesting guest from the likes of Hackney Brewery and Weird Beard.

The Green Dragon Tavern 6 Church Street Wymondham Norfolk NR18 0PH 01953 607907 www.greendragonnorfolk.co.uk Wymondham (pronounced Windham) lies roughly 90 minutes drive from Peterborough or if you prefer, one stop prior to Norwich on the main rail route. Situated alongside the ancient Abbey church, this beautiful 14th century timbered building has been a firm favourite with locals and visitors for many years. Its history as a pub goes back as far as the 16th century, and was a
survivor of the Great Fire of 1615 – the scorch marks can still be seen. The individual medieval rooms
have retained their character, with a small low beamed bar and hatch to a separate drinking dining area. There’s also a snug

and a sizeable upstairs function room, known as “the Den”, which reopened in 2012 to provide much needed extra space at peak times. The house Green Dragon ale is brewed by Marston’s, but the three remaining pumps offer ever-changing examples of light, red and dark beers. On our visit a mouth-watering combination of Titanic Lifeboat, Nethergate Old Growler, and St Peter’s Brewery’s Ruby Red Ale. There’s also an extensive selection of single malt whiskies. Popular with diners, the menu consists mainly of traditional locally sourced English cuisine – starters priced at around £5, light bites from around £4 and lunchtime mains for around £9. A specials board offers more imaginative fare such as Beef & Chorizo Goulash and Goat’s Cheese Salad at prices between £9 and £13. The rooms feature real fires, leaded windows, and a host of artefacts, pictures and notices to keep customers entertained, and the waiting staff deliver the food swiftly and cheerfully. The cosy rooms fill up very quickly, so it’s advisable to reserve a table if you plan to eat. Outside there’s an ample beer garden which also fills up during their Ale, Cider and Music festival weekends held on Spring and Summer Bank Holidays (this year, 26-29 May and 25-28 August). New members are welcome to join the weekly Rock & Soul Choir nights, and there are regular open mic, quiz, games and ukulele nights – details are shown on the website The pub is open all day every day until 11pm (midnight on Saturdays), with food service 12-3pm daily. There’s very little parking in the immediate area, so if you’re arriving by car it’s best to park in the town and make the short walk in the direction of the Abbey. Chris Shilling

13th Century Cafe – 21st Century Micropub Built about the year 1230 a.D it was part of the priory of spalding, & because of its shape it has always been known as the oven or the prior's oven a name now singularly apt, although its original purpose was very far removed from its present one. it was spalding monastic prison; refractory monks & laymen were kept there & stories of torture & cruelty still survive. a few years after the building of the vaulted chamber, a lofty tower was added by Clement hatfield, lord prior from 1292 to 1318, & there is a record of a bell in this tower being tolled at the execution of some eighty felons, the last time being in the year 1502. of the original building only immensely strong lower vault now remains, & was used in the last & previous centuries as a blacksmith's shop, a square room (the present tea room) being built a century or so ago. there is a legend that an underground passage leads from the priors oven to monks house, an historic building a mile away. in the cellar there are signs of an entrance to such passage, although it may have led to a dungeon where the worst enemies of the prior were incarcerated. BREWSROUND
Although we’ve recently lost one of our local breweries, Market Deeping’s Star Brewing Company, microbreweries continue to spring up around the country. This issue, we look at three new ones from our area: Angles Ales Founded by renowned biochemist Dr Nick Ashley and Paul Dickinson – a former Customs officer responsible for overseeing brewing at Bass, Marstons and Everards in Burton on Trent – Orton Southgate’s Angles Ales has the mission “ produce traditional English beers with English ingredients”. Initially with a small range of beers – Goat Tosser – Old English Best Bitter (4.4%); Feral Nun, a dark ruby bitter (5%); Happy Paranoids, a light ale (3.7%) and Southgate Bitter, an English red/amber bitter (3.6%) – they have also have brewed a traditional European lager, Doctors Orders (6%). A 7.5%
East India Pale Ale, HMS Glatton, is on the way. Currently distributed in an area fromSt Neots to Stamford and Bedfordshire to March, Angles Ales are available on draft but there are plans to bottle them by the end of the year. For further information, visit www.angles-ales.co.uk Fuddy Duck In July 2016, having worked from the same unit in Kirton near Boston, Lincolnshire, for five years, Jason Marshall decided to turn the unneeded space into a microbrewery. Under the name the Fuddy Duck Brewery, Jason has filled some 2,000 bottles and over 4,000 litres of beer into casks and key kegs for pubs in and around Lincolnshire. He welcomes visitors to the brewery to sample the beers and to buy bottles from pale ales to dark stouts. Later this year he hopes to have a fully functioning
tap house, where people can come and sit down to drink quality craft ale. Current Brews: Fuddies Pale Ale (4.0%) Bahama Blonde Ale (4.5%) Dabbling Duck Porter (4.5%) 12 bottle packs are available at £34.50 and three-bottle gift packs for £11.50 from www.thefuddyduckbrewery.co.uk Rocket Ales A so called “cuckoo brewery”, which was launched in 2016, Rocket Ales currently brews at King’s Cliffe Brewery. Rocket Ales was launched by experienced home brewer Dave Smith – who was instrumental in the development of KCB Ales P51 bitter with Jez O’Neill – and salesman Mike Blakesley. Current brews: Atlas IPA (5.8%) Vostok Stout (4.6%) Komet Bier (3.8%) For further information, visit www.rocket-ales.com

CAMBRIdGE
With quickest journey times under an hour and a “turn up and go” adult fare of £18, a rail trip to Cambridge is an easy option from Peterborough. As with other great drinking cities such as York and Norwich, it would be impossible to do all of the quality pubs of Cambridge on a single day, so we decided to spotlight the pubs in the back streets and within easy walking of the station. Cambridge has been without a station bar for many years, but happily for us a brand new pub
The Cambridge Blue.
had just opened within the major Station Square development immediately outside of the station concourse. The first foray into the city by Young’s, the Station Tavern is a spacious dining pub open from 8am (yes, the bar is open at that time). Three Young’s beers are usually available alongside a guest – Cambridge Moonshine Pale on our visit – along with a good selection of bottled craft ales and draught continental beers. Breakfast, brunch and lunch menus are all available. Be
prepared to pay over £4 for your beer, and the full English comes in at a hefty £10.95, but a pub in this location is long overdue, the ambience is very agreeable, and there’s even live train information relayed on screens. Walking through the new high-rise development, it’s surprisingly easy to discern Tenison Road leading off to the right which takes you into more familiar surroundings. The rows of neat Victorian terraces are still home to a great number of pubs, most of which are open from
Kingston Arms.
mid-day. The Salisbury Arms opens at 11am and has benefited from the Wells’ Pizza, Pots & Pints treatment. The refurbishment is a very tasteful traditional/industrial feel, with wooden/red brick floors, traditional lighting, a range for beers from the Wells/Young’s stable, and a wood fired pizza oven. Manager Sam Adams is proud of his Pub of the Year award presented by the local newspaper, and he looks forward to his next move to set up in Peterborough at the former HG’s/Grapevine building. A left turn into Felton Street leads to Mawson Road, home of the Live & Let Live. This awardwinning pub is closed on Wednesday/Thursday lunchtimes, but is one for the connoisseur as landlord, Pete Wiffin, is renowned for well-kept beers, beer and railway memorabilia and his love of speciality rums. There are usually five real ales available including at least one from Oakham, and three ciders – the pub won Cider Pub of the Year in 2015. The concentration of pubs is locally known as the Mill Street area, and a right turn into Mill Street leads to the White Swan (Greene King), which we bypassed, turning right
into Devonshire Street and to the Devonshire Arms – a Milton Brewery pub (sister to our own Coalheaver’s Arms). A good complement of customers was already in evidence at midday, enjoying the five Milton brews and a tasty guest ale (Yakima Chief, from Bob’s Brewing Co) – two further guests are available at peak times. Food is served daily, and there’s a rock music theme with many gig posters, and monthly live performances. A stone’s throw away in Kingston Street is the Kingston Arms – another back street local with an outstanding beer range. Incredibly the pub supports seven permanent brews in the shape of Jaipur, Brewers Gold, Summer Lightning, JHB, Wherry and TT Landlord along with Oscar Wilde from the Mighty Oak brewery, and four guests plus two changing real ciders. The beer prices start at just £2.90 (for Tydd Barn Ale). Popular with diners, there are daily food specials and a beer garden if you want to escape the cooking aromas. Again, very close by on Gwydir Street is another local legend – the Cambridge Blue. Run admirably for many years by Jethro and Terri Littlechild, the pub offers 14
hand pumps, over 200 varieties of malt whisky, and a huge refrigerator stocked with craft ales from around the world. Now managed by Ben Ackers, formerly of the White Lion in Norwich, standards have been maintained, and the beer kellerstyle back room, and sizeable beer garden offer ample space for the annual beer festival (next one is 27 June-2 July). The pub was awarded Cider Pub of the Year for 2016. Also on Gwydir Street, the Alexandra Arms was something of a surprise package – ostensibly an unassuming Greene King pub, it’s actually part of the Pelle Pub Co (sister to the Hopbine and The Portland, also in Cambridge), there’s a good range of eight real ales from the breweries such as Oakham, Tring, Humpty Dumpty, Grain and Black Sheep at prices from £3.40. The pub is open all day and there’s a friendly welcome, sensibly priced food and an ample beer garden. We had to skip the Petersfield (Sturton Road), and the Blue Moon in Norfolk Street, which was closed, to reach an old favourite – The Tram Depot on Dover Street, housed in the original stable for the horse drawn Cambridge trams, which
Grain & Hop Store.
gave way to electric power in 1914. Historical pictures adorn the walls of this Everards house – their Tiger and Old Original were supplemented with Ascolan and Tram Light, and three guest ales from Banks & Taylor and Brampton breweries. On Prospect Row is another Cambridge legend – The Free Press, a pleasant Greene King house with small individual rooms and a tiny snug. The holy trinity of GK IPA, Abbot and XX Mild are always available here (apparently the only Cambridge pub to serve the mild) plus four guests including, on our visit, an Evan Evans beer a long way from its Carmarthenshire home. Close by in Orchard Street is
the 17th century Elm Tree. Manager Rob Wain is an enthusiastic beer man, whose love of continental and craft beers is equal to that for hand pulled ales. Ten real ales are available – from Banks & Taylor, plus Young’s, St Peter’s, Butcombe and Black Jack. Regular live entertainment also features. With an eye on the time, we headed along Clarendon Street, past the Clarendon Arms and the landmark University Arms Hotel, currently undergoing restoration, and alongside Parker’s Piece to the Grain & Hop Store – a huge two storey structure which offers four real ales, 11 craft beers and if it takes your fancy, Pilsner Urquell, from
large tanks situated in the bar. Live music is a weekly feature on Sundays, and the upstairs drinking area offers great views across the green. Just around the corner in Regent Street, the trendy Old Bicycle Shop opened in 2016, serving decent quality beers from Cambridge Brew Co, Adnams and Nene Valley plus real ciders. Regent Street takes you all the way back to Station Road, at the junction of which stands the Flying Pig. Originally the Crown, the pub has been in the same hands for 20 years (Matt and Justine Hatfield) – they’ve created a superb cosy, friendly local with pig themes throughout, open all day from 12 and popular with students and visitors for quality ales, many from East Anglian brewers, and thrice-weekly live music. The name, it seems, comes from a previous licensees known as Mick the Pig, who also held a pilot’s licence. Chris Shilling The 44th Cambridge Beer Festival (Camra’s longest running festival), held annually on the city’s Jesus Green, and featuring over 200 real ales and 80 ciders and perries, opens at 5pm on 22 May and runs to 27 May.

REVIEWS Beatles: Eight Days A Week – The Touring Years DVD (OPTD2931), StudioCanal
Loves You. A brilliant use of material, showing the growth of the Beatles in a fresh and exciting way, my only criticism is of the decision to use colourised footage of certain live performances, giving the band an unnatural, almost cartoon look.
David Brent: Life on the Road DVD (E052055D), Entertainment One
Directed by former Happy Days actor Ron Howard, this film tells the story of the Fab Four from the period between Ringo Starr joining the band to the release of Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and their final live performance on the roof of the Apple Corps building. Packed full of archive stills, audio and footage – some of which is previously unseen – it also includes new interviews with Starr and Sir Paul McCartney, as well as celebrity fans including Whoopie Goldberg, and Blackadder creator Richard Curtis and its composer Howard Goodall. Actress Sigourney Weaver was invited to take part after Howard and his team discovered footage of her in the audience of one of the Beatles’ Hollywood Bowl concerts from 1964, while another gem from the same year sees a crowd of Liverpool FC supporters at Anfield singing She
Despite initial low ratings, the BBC2 mockumentary The Office went on to be one of the most successful sitcoms of the last decade; spawning remakes across the world and making stars of its leads including Sherlock’s Martin Freeman and the show’s co-creator Ricky Gervais who played narcissistic boss David Brent. This feature film, also shot in a fly-on-the-wall style, finds Brent working as a salesman for a sanitary supplies firm, still telling rubbish jokes and spouting “right on” clichés he’s learnt (but not quite understood) from training sessions. Taking time off from work
with a couple of cashed in pensions, he attempts to revive his music career with a tour of venues around Berkshire. It costs him dearly and having to pay his session musicians to drink with him, not to mention hotel rooms (when the gigs are so local he could have stayed at home) and so few people turning up to the shows, Brent ends up losing £20,000. Brent’s lyrics are on the embarrassing side (such as the well-meaning but offensive Please Don’t Make Fun of the Disabled) and you will laugh and cringe at him in equal measure. But there’s some great musicianship on the soundtrack (his band is played by time-served hitmakers), while Gervais has created such a wellrounded character that there are moments when you feel sorry for him. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never seen The Office, this is a film that stands on its own two feet. And while Brent may not be everyone’s cup of tea (I wouldn’t like to meet him), it’s always good to know that such a familiar TV character can work outside “the Box”.
