the rhythm section Peterborough bar Puzzles? will be celebrating American Independence on 4 July with a Revolution Ruckus – a sonic showdown between the British and the Americans. Holding the fort for the Brits is local folk legend Brian Stone, and for the Americans Mr Jimmy Chase makes a return to the stage. Pub News
The Fox at Folksworth reopened in April as the latest incarnation of Clarkes restaurant. Obviously there’s a strong emphasis on food with a separate restaurant area and spacious wooden floored bar area. The beer garden is still under development but the huge patio doors open out onto a large patio area. Real Ale is available – from Lacons and Wells breweries when we visited. The former Clarkes restaurant in Peterborough (exVine and HG’s) is expected to reopen during the summer as part of Charles Wells’ Pizza Pints & Pots chain. Still in the city centre, the Bumble Inn has celebrated one year in business (and almost 600 different real ales) with a Camra gold award. It is to hold a week-long beer festival in conjunction with the Hand & Heart from 20 July – approximately 15 beers will be available at each pub. The Bumble’s Tom and Michelle’s previous pub, the Coalheavers Arms, remains open for the moment but is up for sale. The New Inn, Woodston (formerly The Office and Johnny Byrne’s)
First orders at The Crown, Casterton. is to reopen in early July as the Yard of Ale under Swiss Cottage licensees James and Angela Hopkin. The pub is undergoing a major refit, three to four real ales will be offered, and an entertainment license has been applied for. Pool and darts will remain along with TV sport, but the upstairs area will be opened up as a function room for local clubs, and beer festivals are planned for the weekends of the first and last Peterborough United games of the season. The Beehive in Bourges Boulevard is to house a dedicated takeaway, Posh Fish & Chips, alongside its bar and restaurant when it reopens after refurbishment in July. Open again after a long period of closure is the Straw Bear in Whittlesey. Owner Gary Nunns has revitalised the pub and retained a good range of beers. Andy Simmons of the Ploughman at Werrington has applied for Asset of Community Value (ACV) status for the pub which is under renewed threat from possible redevelopment of
the Tesco-owned building. Their annual summer beer festival runs from 4-9 July. The Crown at Casterton reopened on 16 June after a major transformation. Now a free house, the pub was bought by local landowner Brian Knight and is being run by father and daughter team, Stephen Barker and Emily Giddings. Four real ales are available including JHB, Ghost Ship and Doom Bar along with a guest and craft bottles and cans. Food is not currently available, but the pub is open all day from 11am, there’s a sizeable car park and future plans include live entertainment, quiz nights, hog roasts and even live steam exhibits from Brian’s own collection – details at www.crowncasterton.co.uk Ketton’s Baker’s Dozen brewery took first prize in the Golden Ales category at Lincoln Beer festival for its Electric Landlady. The Bertie Arms,Uffington. with regular barbecues planned alongside its Friday/Saturday wood-fired pizza offering. The Deepings raft race weekend (5-6 August) is one of the area’s most popular events – live music will feature at the Boundary Fish Restaurant on the High Street (Sunday) and at the Waterton Arms, Deeping St James on the Saturday night and Sunday afternoon. Previously open evenings and weekends only, the Blue Bell at Maxey is now open daily from 1pm (126pm on Sundays). The Whistle Stop, Tallington is now in the hands of chef Nigel Theodore and Gillian Walker. After refurbishment the pub is now offering an extended menu, opening at 7pm daily. The Bertie Arms at Uffington signalled their ongoing intentions by holding a beer festival over the May Bank Holiday weekend. Live music featured, as did Caribbean food from Embe2goand Sri Lankan dishes from Kura Kura. In Bourne, the Anchor is to be awarded a gold award by Peterborough Camra in July. Over the last three years, licensee Taras Suchoruczka has
increased the range of real ales from one to six. Prices start at £3. The three house brews come from the Dancing Duck brewery in his hometown of Nottingham. Bourne Round Table – organisers of the 2017 Bourne Festival – created a bespoke beer for this year’s event. Brewed at Market Deeping’s Hopshackle Brewery, Referectum is a 4.3% pale amber session ale. The event was hailed as the best ever with record numbers attending on the Saturday – all proceeds go to local charities. The Carlsberg distribution depot in the town is due to close with the loss of 25 jobs – some may be offered positions with distributor DHL. Organisers of Spalding’s Beer & Music Festival are seeking good causes for youths to share in the £15k profit from the event. Two Fen pubs have reopened – the 17th century Old Ship Inn at Long Sutton will feature live sports, open fires, food, pub games and live music. Another free house, The Bull’s Neck at Penny Hill near Holbeach is now run by former hoteliers Lyn and Neil Spiers after 18 months of closure. Whaplode, however, looks set to lose its last pub as a planning application has been made for its demolition to make way for new houses. The applicant has suggested that the Lamb and Flag is no longer viable as a pub and is structurally unsound. A vintage horse trailer is now travelling around the Fens doubling up as a mobile cocktail bar. Norfolk-based Nelly’s Bar also offers beer pumps, including real ale from the Pheasantry Brewery and cider, bottles from fridges as well as coffees and soft drinks. The bar can be booked at www.stacked-ltd.co.uk The Merry Monk at Kirton near Boston is to hold a Summer Fayre & Beer Festival on 2 July.
The Napoleon in Fishtoft Road, Boston has been awarded ACV status, but may still be converted to a micro-pub/private dwelling combination. A Bavarian style Oktoberfest is planned for Boston’s Central Park on 27-28 October. The Pincushion at Wyberton is closing for refurbishment in August – part of the car park is to be lost to accommodate a new Co-op store. Recently rescued from possible redevelopment, the Thatched Cottage at Sutton Bridge has a new roof and kitchen, and will reopen in the autumn. The Chequers at Weston, near Spalding is holding a beer festival on 23 July. The Grainstore, Oakham now has a range of four of its own ciders under the name Rutland Cider Company: the Rutland Apple is now accompanied by Mango, Rhuberry (rhubarb and strawberry) and Bushberry (blackberry and raspberry). Their annual Rutland Beer Festival runs from 24-28 August. Pubs no more The former Silver Jubilee in Bretton, Peterborough suffered another arson attack in April. A plan has been submitted to demolish the former Golden Lion, Stanground to replace it with a shop unit and flats. A previous application was refused. The former Greyhound at Eye Green, which became the Maccaloo restaurant, is now in the hands of Polish TV chef Damian Wawrzyniak. He was attracted particularly by the large garden in which he plans to host barbecues, and reopened in June under a new name: House of Feasts. The one-time Oak Inn at Easton-on-the-Hill is for sale with Humberts.com as a private residence for £675k. Chris Shilling

Stamford’s hidden beer garden
Dating from 1686, the Millstone is one of Stamford’s oldest inns, so has witnessed many changes during its long history. On 23 February this year, the pub suffered possibly its biggest crisis of modern times when a 20ft chimney was brought crashing through the Collyweston slate roof by Storm Doris. Carole Frith and Malcolm Brown have been licensees since 2015. “We were on holiday at the time,” said Carole, “but all of a sudden the phone was red hot. "We knew we'd got a major problem. It took out the ceiling, gas and electrical supplies and we had to move out of the building, but this turned out to be the start of the long process of the rebirth of the pub." The good news is that the pub has now reopened. As well as the remediation work inside, the period of closure has allowed time for the large beer garden to receive a major overhaul. “Indoors we’ve got a new coffee machine, and we’ve overhauled the beer range. Hand pumps offer Timothy Taylor Landlord, Doom Bar and a guest ale. We are always open to suggestions and we’ll always be pleased to consider new beers.” A craft beer from Blue Moon is also now available, Grolsch has
replaced the Fosters lager, and Strongbow Dark Fruit is due to be introduced for the summer On the food side, a Pick & Mix platter has been introduced (three items and dip for £5.95 or six items and dips for £10.50) and seasonal favourites such as Ploughman’s and salads. Food is served 10am-3pm daily (12-3pm Sunday). Stamford is blessed with a number of great pubs, but garden space is at a premium in the town centre. The Millstone possesses probably the largest beer garden in the town, south
facing to catch the sun, and seating up to 140 people. The courtyard garden now boasts new composite decking, new gates and lighting, outside TV screen and an outside bar. “The May bank holiday weekend was one of our busiest ever,” said Carole, “with many enjoying the live televised sport on the numerous large screens.” The pub is dog and childfriendly, and features regular live entertainment – details on Facebook (millstoneinnstamford) or see the listings in Rhythm & Booze. 13th Century Cafe – 21st Century Micropub Built about the year 1230 A.D it was part of the Priory of Spalding, & because of its shape it has always been known as The Oven or The Prior's Oven a name now singularly apt, although its original purpose was very far removed from its present one. It was Spalding Monastic Prison; refractory monks & laymen were kept there & stories of torture & cruelty still survive. A few years after the building of the vaulted chamber, a lofty tower was added by Clement Hatfield, Lord Prior from 1292 to 1318, & there is a record of a bell in this tower being tolled at the execution of some eighty felons, the last time being in the year 1502. Of the original building only immensely strong lower vault now remains, & was used in the last & previous centuries as a blacksmith's shop, a square room (the present Tea Room) being built a century or so ago. There is a legend that an underground passage leads from The Priors Oven to Monks House, an historic building a mile away. In the cellar there are signs of an entrance to such passage, although it may have led to a dungeon where the worst enemies of The Prior were incarcerated. information sponsored by John Lyon, Pinchbeck historical unit

RAiLRoViNG LoNdoN (EC)
This trip was originally planned to be a tour of the East End, but we soon learned that there’s such a concentration of great pubs closer the City, it would be too great a task for one day. A standard adult off-peak weekday Travelcard from Peterborough with Great Northern, which includes return trains and unlimited tube and metro travel as far out as Zone 6 is £35.90. It's cheaper at weekends and always worth checking both the GN and East Coast websites for online offers. The first off-peak outward train is the 08.46 which arrives in the capital around 10am. Our chosen
start point was Liverpool Street – just four stops east of King’s Cross. The area has been gradually disappearing under high-rise development, but once you find your way out of the tube station the Lord Aberconway can easily be found near the junction of Liverpool Street and Old Broad Street. This 19th century rebuild was named after a former chairman of the Metropolitan Railway and is now part of the Nicholson’s chain with a good mix of local ales and national brands. It is claimed that the spirits of the victims of the Great Fire still haunt the building. Liverpool Street leads to the
main street running north-east – Bishopsgate. This leads past the mainline station concourse which boasts an impressive JD Wetherspoon (handy if you’re arriving early). This time named after a former Chairman of the Great Eastern Railway, the elegant Hamilton Hall is situated in the former ballroom of the Great Eastern Hotel and retains many impressive features. A few minutes walk away, leading off to the right is Artillery Lane – home to Williams Ale & Cider House. Open from 11am, this proved a very agreeable place indeed, as there are individual rooms and a

bewildering choice of tipples – seven cask ales plus eight craft kegs and unusually six real ciders dispensed from the hand pump. Breweries such as Southwark, Truman, Shiny and Redwell were represented. Only when we enquired about the origin of the house Spitalfields Brew did we realise that this is actually a Greene King pub. As we admired the Piano sitting in the corner, fresh warm sausage rolls and scotch eggs were brought out, so we elected to stay for another and enjoy a delicious impromptu brunch and the pleasant ambience. A right turn and right again into Widegate Street brings you to sister pub the Kings Stores also open at 11am and

clearly popular as a group of suited city types were enjoying the variety of beers from Dark Star, Sambrooks, Aylesbury and Bedlam breweries (along with the spritzers), and it was barely midday. This former army munitions store is a much more food-orientated establishment but the Dark Star was on great form. Back onto Bishopsgate – we bypassed Fullers’ Astronomer to get to the Woodin’s Shades – a spacious but friendly Nicholson’s house with an upstairs restaurant and five guest beers (from Salopian, West Berks, Horns and Timothy Taylor) to complement the London Pride, Doom Bar and house beer (from St Austell). Further along Bishopsgate on the right is Folgate Street, with the wonderful Water Poet. Incredibly, so close to the soaring city office blocks, this is a multi-roomed free house, with separate rooms, fireplaces, wooden floors and most surprisingly a spacious “barn” and beer garden. Inside there are a multitude of mirrors and leather couches and outside, amid the floral display is a garden bar. Beers include local brews from Truman’s and Purity along with Doom Bar, Jaipur and Old
Speckled Hen. At the end of the road a left turn into Commercial Street takes you to an original London gin palace (and one-time brothel), now a no-frills city boozer – the Commercial Tavern. It presents a slightly tatty appearance, but the beers are well kept by the Liverpudlian manager who clearly prefers his northern beers, with Ilkley, Saltaire and Thornbridge breweries represented. “Why the sole West County brew?” (from Moor Brewery), I asked – “Oh, I thought it was from the north too,” was the startled response. The chequered history of this place reputedly includes visits from Jack the Ripper, and the cellar was one time home to the Elephant Man. Barmaid Freya was keen to show off her favourite local gin, East London Liquor, from Bow. An about turn back along Commercial Street we discovered the Golden Heart is an original Truman’s house (the former brewery is close by), which now sells the new Truman ales from the microbrewery in Hackney Wick. TT Landlord is also offered in this unspoilt wood panelled pub that has been run for 40 years by the

characterful Sandra Esqulant. A blue plaque on the wall reveals that this was the birthplace of music hall legend Bud Flanagan. Past Spitalfields Market and St Saviours church, is the Ten Bells, but the Doom Bar and Sharps Atlantic didn’t tempt us in so we carried on turning left into Fourier Street onto the curry paradise that is Brick Lane. On Election Day, this was brisk with reporters but our task took us past the former 7 Stars and left into Heneage Street – the home of the Pride of Spitalfields – once the Romford Arms. This too looks a little run down from the outside, but the hipsters drinking outside reassured us that this is indeed a real gem. In a multicultural area this cosy wood-panelled local is a bastion of Britishness with enthusiastic beer types keen to relate the story of the pub. This too has been run by the same landlady for many years (Ann Butler), and the walls are adorned with family pictures along with traditional east end scenes. Well-kept and keenly priced beers from Fullers, Truman and Crouch Vale plus guests and bottled beers complement the crazily cheap hot food (from just £2.50). The piano, we were told is still played regularly, and the Lennie, the pub

cat even has his own website. At the end of Brick Lane a left turn takes you into Whitechapel High Street. The White Hart is next to Aldgate East Underground station and oozes local history. The long narrow pub is popular with tourists on the trail of Jack the Ripper as one of his victims allegedly met her fate here. Onto Leman Street, a grandiose 18th century former hospital now hosts the Dispensary, the local Camra pub of the year in 2014. Run by enthusiastic couple David and Annie Cambridge, the pub features wooden floors, mosaics and chandeliers, and a galleried upstairs area. Originally built for the German community, the impressive building was built from volunteer contributions, and now boasts a good range of changing real ales (from Hogs Back, Dark Star and Oakham Ales on our visit). David is a former chef to the Rothschild organisation, so food here is a priority, but the beers were on good form too. The Princess of Prussia in Prescot Street, was not on our hit list, but this traditional Shepherd Neame pub proved to be a great find. The subdued lighting, patio garden, excellently kept Hog Island, Master Brew, Spitfire and Whitstable Bay, and separate rooms create a relaxing environment. With food required, I
remembered a previous trip in which I encountered the wonders of Simpson’s Tavern in Cornhill in the City. Open from 8.30am (Tues-Fri), this traditional pub restaurant still features brass railings above the wooden settles used by city gentlemen to put their top hats and bowlers. So we headed off via Fenchurch Street towards Leadenhall Market – well worth a visit for the three-storey 18th century Lamb Tavern (adjacent to Lloyds). The Young’s beers upstairs are complemented by a wider range in the downstairs Toms Bar. The financial heart of course is very much a Monday-Friday daytime phenomenon, and Simpson’s had already closed by early evening so we retired to the Jamaica Wine House in St Michael’s Alley, off Cornhill – London’s first coffee house, dating from 1652, and a regular haunt of Samuel Pepys. With links to the sugar and slave trades, today this is very much the preserve of city bankers, so we were pleasantly surprised that the quality dishes on offer in the downstairs Todds until 9pm were priced at around a tenner. From here it’s a short walk to Bank tube station – four stops to King’s Cross. We’d missed our planned train home, so what to do but finish off with a cheeky one at the Parcel Yard on King’s Cross station itself? Chris Shilling

REVIEWS
A friend who sells breweriana at collector’s fairs is often asked to value unopened bottles of beer, brewed to mark the Queen’s Silver Jubilee in 1977. With a few exceptions, most bottles are worth very little, there’s simply too many still around, gathering dust on shelves or in garages. I wondered if any of these beers are still drinkable after 40 years and managed to pick up a mixed selection of beers quite cheaply from eBay and set about tasting them. First up was a Greene King Jubilee Ale, which contained quite a bit of sediment. Like all the other beers, it had a sherry-like smell, but quite a nutty taste and felt quite hefty. The bottle of Home Ales Jubilee Strong Ale poured clear and was much lighter in taste and colour, but would still make Robin’s men merry. The Everards Silver Jubilee Ale was also pale but was so dry that it certainly wouldn’t quench a thirst. Oxidisation had given our Courage Silver Jubilee Ale a medicine-like taste, which meant it quickly went down the sink. Pouring out the Whitbread Silver Jubilee Ale had given me renewed hope, it looked effervescent, smelt nice but had little in the way of flavour. It seems that I had saved the best ‘til last; a bottle of Ansell’s Silver Jubilee Strong Ale. It was everything a special beer that had been left to mature should be – not only did it have a sherry-like smell but a thicker texture than the other beers and a warm fruity flavour. I have another bottle stored away for a special occasion but it’s likely to be cracked open
long before the Platinum Jubilee. The One Elm, 1 Guild Street, Stratford-upon-Avon A Grade II listed pub that takes its name from the tree that once marked the borough boundary nearby, Stratford upon Avon’s The One Elm dates back to around 1835. Renamed The Recession in 1992 and later Bar Humbug, it thankfully returned to its original identity about five years ago. The front bar was very busy when we arrived on a Friday evening, no doubt due to the range of real ales, many of which are from the town’s Purity Brewing Co but were quickly taken through to our table in one of the dining areas at the back. As well as the regular menu, offering all sorts of gastronomic delights, there was a specials board from which I ordered Posh Fish and Chips – comprising Beer Battered Haddock, Tempura King Prawns, and Chilli and Tomato Mussels
with Fat Chips, Peas and Tartar Sauce – while my wife had Free-range Flat Iron Chicken with Skinny Chips. Although children’s portions are available for half the adult price, my two didn’t fancy anything off the menu, however all credit to our waitress, Jess, who was able to put together something more suitable for their tastes. Using the freshest, locally sourced ingredients, the food was very tasty indeed and a special mention must go to the haddock, which had a lovely thick and crispy batter. My only criticisms are that my food came on a wooden board, which made eating the (garden) peas something of a challenge, and the mussels could have been a little spicier. The One Elm may only be a few yards away from William Shakespeare’s birthplace, but the pub’s surroundings and the good food we enjoyed are a world away from the usual tourist fare.
