The 2018 Camra Good Beer Guide was published in September with new listings for the Royal Oak at Castor and the Crown at Elton, and in Peterborough the Bumble Inn and the Ostrich have gained listings. Charters Café Bar returns to the book, though curiously, sister Oakham Ales pub – the Brewery Tap, is omitted this time. In Lincolnshire there are new entries for Goodbarn’s Yard (Boston), the Black Bull (Donington), Beerheadz and Chequers in Grantham, local rural Pub of the Year – the Green Man at Ropsley, The Draymans Arms in Spalding and the Kings Head in Stamford. In Rutland the Wheatsheaf at Langham gets a mention, as does Wetherspoon’s Captain Noel Newton in Oakham. The Cross Keys at Kings Cliffe is the only new entry in East Northants. The rival Good Pub Guide 2018 has awarded the Olive Branch, Clipsham Leicestershire & Rutland Dining Pub of the Year for the second consecutive year. There are new main listings for the Dog in a Doublet near Thorney and Smiths in Bourne.

Chef Adebola Adeshina who has taken over the Fitzwilliam Arms, Castor.

The survival of the Cherry Tree in Peterborough’s Oundle Road has received a boost with the awards of ACV status, meaning the pub cannot be demolished or converted to other uses without planning permission. At a meeting with the local campaigners in late September, owner Milton Estates suggested that the pub would be retained, but plans were in hand to develop land behind the building. name artists and intimate events. Walters Bar & Eatery, situated on the first floor, will, for the first time, offer draught beers along with a wide range of spirits and food “not seen anywhere else in the city”. The Blue Bell in Werrington reopened in October under the management of John Lawrence, formerly at the Crown in Peterborough and now a partner in Frothblowers, also in the village. Closed since 2014, the former Fitzwillam Arms/Fratelli restaurant in Castor is to reopen in November as the Chubby Castor. No major structural changes are planned, but chef Adebola Adeshina, who has worked with Gordon Ramsey and Marcus Wareing joins the team after three years at the award-winning Petersham restaurant in Richmond. Seasonal cooking demonstrations with guest chefs are planned. The closed Fenman in Stanground has reportedly been sold. The Addison Arms at Glatton is now run by Ruth and Roy Groves. Pub News (continued) closed temporarily at the end of October to facilitate the final stage of a major transformation. It will reopen on 25 November with a new bar and signage, rebuilt kitchen and toilets and extended restaurant area. The carpet is to be replaced with flagstone and oak flooring, and a log burner installed in the original fireplace. There’s also an outside bar to complement the improved beer garden and children’s play area. The famous ‘dug-out’ bar is retained and redecorated. The pub will open for breakfast at 8am daily. Due to retirement of the current owners, Chester’s Restaurant and guesthouse has been put up for sale with Barker Storey Matthews. Across the road, the Vine is also for sale – interested parties are requested to enquire within. The Bell Inn at Deeping St James is now in the hands of Paul Frith who also has the Golden Fleece in Stamford. Reopened in the spring, the Bertie Arms in Uffington is now serving food. The Castle, Castle Bytham is to reopen towards the end of November under Will Stanton and partner, Sue Farley. The Sun Inn at Cottesmore

has new managers – Christian and Gemma Watkin join the Everard-owned pub from a free house in Nottinghamshire. They’ve extended opening hours to all day from 12 noon daily – food is served 12-3pm and 6-9pm (2-4pm Sundays). The Coach House, South Luffenham has new owners – chef Alec Stephens and his mother, Sue Reeves, took over in August, offering a new à la carte menu and seven refurbished letting rooms. Oakham’s Mill Street Pub & Kitchen celebrated one year in business with an “exciting, nutritious and interactive” children’s menu, allowing young diners to construct their own dishes from a choice of main and side dishes. The Country Lounge at Morcott is offering kids pizza parties for parties of 15-30 children to include personalised birthday cake and entertainer. Sleaford has a new town centre pub – Bar 51 (ex-the Grapes). Focusing on gin, real ale and craft beer, food comes in the form of snacks and sharing boards. Across the road, the Beer & Bean is reopening, possibly with a new theme. The longclosed Rose & Crown in the town is the subject of reopening plan. Subject to the licensing committee, the new venture would include a bar, restaurant,

The group are seeking new members to help with next year’s event. Grantham’s M&B-owned Muddle Go Nowhere is to become a Miller & Carter Steakhouse early in 2018. The annual beer festival at the Eagle in Boston was hailed as the best ever with a record attendance. Thirty-one beers were available along with live bands. The Railway in London Road, Boston now serves two cask ales from local micros – currently from Fuddy Duck and Horncastle breweries. Pubs no more A murder mystery evening was held at the Merry Monk in Kirton in September to raise funds to help save the Old King’s Head building, now owned by Lincolnshire Heritage. Unused for 25 years, and the recent subject of a revival plan, the derelict Bull Hotel in Long Sutton has been put back on the market. N atioNal treasure spotlighting Britain’s best boozers

The Bhurtpore Inn Wrenbury Rd Aston Nantwich Cheshire CW5 8DQ 01270 780917 www.bhurtpore.co.uk Nestling close to the Llangollen Canal on the borders of Shropshire and Cheshire, the tiny village of Aston might seem an unlikely location for one of the UK’s most celebrated real ale venues. The 18th century Bhurtpore Inn is named after the Indian city conquered by Lord Combermere, who was appointed commander in chief of colonial India back in 1825. Originally the Queens Head

and the Red Lion, the pub gained its current name after the local squire’s victory a year later in storming the highly fortified city held stubbornly by the incumbent Jat Muslims, thus quelling a ‘rising tide of unrest’ in

India after which a period of calm followed. Bought from the estate in the 1890s, the pub changed hands a number of times and experienced periodical enlargement and modernisation, before closing in the 1980s. It was eventually purchased in 1991 by Simon George whose greatgreat-great grandmother Joyce had run the pub 140 years earlier, and whose grandfather was actually born on the premises. The pub was stripped back to its basics, and quickly gained a reputation for its wide range of traditional ales and homemade food. Latterly the Bhurpore has become a destination for lovers of a good pint thanks to the ever-changing

Willoughby Arms

The choice of well-kept beers, and inevitably, awards quickly followed. The local branch of Camra has awarded it Pub of the Year on no less than eight occasions (including 2017), and regional Pub of the Year twice. Independently of this, The Good Pub Guide awarded the pub its ultimate accolade of national Beer Pub of the Year on two occasions. Simon still runs the pub, and can usually be found in the cellar, ensuring perfect beer quality. The 11 hand pumps dispense beers from across the nation – none are permanent but a couple of the local Salopian brews usually feature. Prices range from £3.30 to around £4 for the stronger ales. In addition, there’s a mind-boggling array of up to 500 bottled and canned beers and ciders from around the globe, including one of the largest ranges of Belgian brews in the UK. If beer’s not your thing there’s also a whole shelf of gins, a large choice of rums and vodkas and up to 150 malt whiskies. There are a number of individual rooms, some displaying the rich history of the building, and a separate dining room. There’s an extensive menu including (appropriately) the signature curry dishes – main meals are priced at around £10, with light bites from £5.95 and sandwiches for the smaller appetite. There’s a large drinking area partly under canvas, and while there are no longer official beer festivals, there’s a general air of a permanent festival on busy weekends and summer evenings, with occasional live music. This welcoming pub is the hub of the community with regular meetings of local cycling, folk and classic car clubs. Opening times are all day from 12 noon to 11.30 pm (midnight at weekends). Food is served from 12-2pm and 5.30-9.00pm (all day at weekends until 9.30pm). Chris Shilling

One of Stamford’s favourite watering holes, the Periwig in All Saint’s Square closed for business a couple of years back, and has been the subject of speculation ever since. However, in early November, this historic threestory property is set to reopen as Paten & Co. Owner Mick Thurlby of the Knead Group has invested over £500k in a new pub restaurant set to become a major town centre attraction. R&B was offered a sneak preview. Named after a former owner, Paten & Co was a major wholesaler whose portfolio include the Bull Hotel and Bull & Dolphin in Peterborough, the Letter B in Whittlesey, the Abbey in Crowland and the Red Lion Hotel in Spalding among other licensed premises mainly in the East of England.

Designed in an industrial style, the first thing that struck us was the re-use of original materials such as aged timber, parquet flooring, glass and steel lampshades and wall tiling. Tiling in the staircase area resembles that used on the London Underground and the attention to detail extends to specially made curved corner pieces. Seating was still being scratchbuilt on site and resembles carriage seating with three leather-covered seats facing three with tables between. The ground floor features a long pewter covered bar area, with two iconic real ales supplemented with 11 craft keg beers served ‘from the wall’. A large range of gins is available along with other spirits, cocktails, non-alcoholic mocktails, teas and coffees. The

food serving area will be on the first-floor – an open-pass arrangement where the kitchen, complete with charcoal oven/ grill, is visible to all. Walls have deliberately been left with a distressed look, complete with ancient graffiti. The top floor features more leather seating, industrial lighting and ‘gin bottle’ lampshades. Fireplaces have been retained on all floors, and original artefacts including signs, old price lists and barrel ends can be found throughout. The food offering is likely to change regularly, but will include small, large and vegetarian options, roasts and grills with lamb and beef supplied from the local Knead farm. Unusually for the Knead group, pizzas will not be on the menu. To follow developments, visit www.patenandco.co.uk

Pub Scrawl

With Write Club marking its first year at Stoneworks, I had a thought about whether it could be run at next year’s Beer Festival? How about with teams from the various pub meets (Charters’ What the Thunder Said, Drapers’ Poetry Night, Key Theatre’s Poets United, Ostrich’s Word Shop, Stamford Arts Centre Pint of Poetry plus Stoneworks Home Team). Maybe a small cup for the winning team? Someone suggest it to the Entertainments Committee, please. Congratulations to Clare Currie on winning the title of Poet Laureate of Peterborough. So glad I wasn’t a judge as very good final. Congratulations too to Lewis Harlock who runs the What the Thunder Said open mic night at Charters (second Tuesday of the month) for having a short play put on in London.

Phill Jupitus (below) plus his alter ego, Porky the Poet, is at the Stamford Corn Exchange on Thursday 23 November. Tickets are £16, ring 01780 766455. Fans of Pertwee-era Who may be interested to know that there will be a signing for spin-off novel The Daemons of Devil’s End on Saturday 25 November at Waterstones on Bridge Street, Peterborough (noon till 4pm). Next year’s Whittlesea Straw Bear Festival will be over the weekend of 12-14 January. Rose Croft will be telling tales at the

Congratulations to Peterborough author Darren O’Sullivan for getting his thriller Our Little Secret published by Harper Collins. Which got me thinking that some of you might be considering writing a book of your own as NaNoWriMo is upon us, so here are some tips. One: find out about how books do what they do; for that you should try Dr Jane Mackay’s talks at Stamford Arts Centre on Literature at Lunchtime. On Tuesday 5 December the talk is on Peter Pan (followed by mince pies). Then on Tuesday 9 January the subject is Bonjour Tristesse by Francoise Sagan, followed by the David Niven/Deborah Kerr film. The talks start at 12.30pm

and tickets are £6.50. The film starts at 2.30pm, tickets for that cost £5.50. Either ring 017809 763203 or go to www.stamfordartscentre.com to book. Two: listen to authors talk about their work (you can pick up tips). Penrose Halson will be talking about her book Marriages are Made in Bond Street on Thursday 16 November at St Peter’s Church, Oundle from 7.45pm. This is a true story about a marriage bureau that opened on the eve of the Second World War, so the author will know about using archives as a source for stories. Tickets are £8 from Oundle Box Office, 4 New Street, Oundle,

Methodist/United Reformed Church on the Saturday, and Poets United will be poeting at the Town Hall. Cardinal Cox has a couple of publications available from KT Publications at 16 Fane Close, Stamford PE9 1HG. The poetry collection Forget Dance, Let’s Art is £4, children’s story Eel-Catcher Fable is £5 (prices include postage), cheques payable to Kevin Troop. ring 01832 274734 or go to www.oundlefestival.org.uk Three: got to workshops and I always recommend Tim Wilson’s courses at the City College in Brook Street, Peterborough. Tim has had around 30 books published so he not only knows about writing but also getting your work actually into print. Four: meet other aspiring authors and Fiction Fix, held on the first Sunday of the month (so, 5 November, 3 December, 7 January etc) at The Drapers Arms on Cowgate, Peterborough, is a good place to go. Writers read from both works-in-progress and published stories. Starts about 8pm.

RAiLRoViNG NoTTiNGHAM

Nottingham has always offered a wide selection of good pubs, so it’s a challenge to arrange a day crawl without cramming so much in, there’s no time to enjoy any of them properly. So this trip concentrates on those in easy reach of the station, or if you like, ‘city centre, south’. Day returns from Peterborough cost £23.70 for a full adult fare, and can be made on the direct East Midlands Trains service (in just over an hour) or a swift ride on East Coast up to Grantham for a change of trains.

Canalhouse

The station area has been redeveloped in recent years and presents a much more agreeable environment these days. One of the empty buildings on the station concourse – the former taxi office or Cabman’s Shelter – is shortly to open as the next Beerheadz micropub. That’s for another visit, and we resisted the obvious left turn toward the Castle Rock Brewery tap – the Vat & Fiddle, which thanks to recent demolition work, can be seen from the station, agreeing that should be left the final call

of the day. Instead we turned right, tempted by the “Ale Bar” signs in the Bentinck Hotel above Starbucks across the road. The Citizens Bar & Bistro, however proved to be a bit of a disappointment as “Ale” seems to mean craft keg only. There’s clearly a link to Kent’s Shepherd Neame brewery as these consisted of Spitfire Lager, Whitstable Bay and Backyard along with a cider. A pleasant environment, though, and open from 10am to drinkers, or 7am if you just fancy a breakfast (£5.50).

So, over the bridge and left onto Canal Street, where there’s a wealth of choice. The former buildings of canal company Fellows, Morton & Clayton Ltd have been well preserved and the name has been retained for the first of our real ale pubs – an old favourite, which was offering beers from Adnams, Purple Moose and Sharps on our visit. There’s plenty of history displayed on the walls, but it soon became clear than in order to access the canal side itself, it’s necessary to go next door to the Castle Rock–owned Canalhouse. This superb pub boasts the “largest world beer range in the East Midlands” and offers a huge patio garden with views across the water. The canal actually flows into the pub itself, and there’s an iron bridge across to the bar area, and even a narrowboat or two floating below. With the usual Castle Rock beers on, a selection of well kept guest ales (with 20p CAMRA discount) and good food under a tenner, we were happy to spend some time here. The Via Fossa next door was closed, so we retraced our steps back along Canal Street to the Newshouse – brewery tap for Totally Brewed, so named as it

stands on the site of a beer house where illiterate customers came to hear the news read out.Not the most attractive pub of the day, but five well-kept beers (from Castle Rock and Totally Brewed) were available plus a selection of snacks and there’s darts, bar billiards and big-screen entertainment. Up the hill towards the Lace Market area, past the Pitcher & Piano, housed in a church, is High Pavement – home to the Cock & Hoop. Situated opposite the National Justice Museum, this is actually a hotel, but the small individual wood-panelled rooms give it a homely feel and unusually for this area, beer from JW Lees. Further along High Pavement, a left turn at the church leads to St Mary’s Gate and the Keans Head – another excellent Castle Rock outlet with wooden floors nine hand pumps and another 10 craft keg beers. Formerly a wine bar, the single-roomed pub has a vibrant bistro feel, and food is available at prices from £2.50, brunch from 11.30am at £6-7, and there’s a wide range of rums, whiskies and gins. Onto Stoney Street, the Angel Microbrewery is another happening place with lots of live

music and a reputation as the ‘punk pub’. Their own Yippe Aye Ay was available alongside a range of beers from microbreweries such as Tiny Rebel, Abstract Jungle and Black Iris along with locally sourced food with a twist. The Cross Keys on Byard Lane is a Victorian pub with wood flooring and panelling and a range of beers form the Navigation Brewery, particularly busy on the Friday afternoon when we visited, so we supped up and headed for the famous Bell Inn on Angel Row, just off the Old Market Square. This 15th century inn is a remarkable survivor in its city centre location, and new owner Greene King appears to respected the history – the list of landlords/ ladies over the years is painted on the wall, and a range of guest beers is available including Oakham and Thornbridge. The cosy front rooms lead to a much larger drinking area at the rear. The Malt Cross on St James’s Street is a cavernous building with a galleried upstairs area complete with leather couches and a good range of beers from Adnams, Home Ales, Totally Brewed and Cross Bay. We passed the Roebuck (JW

Flirting with Corpses at the salutation.

Wetherspoon) and the Beer & Lace to get onto Maid Marion Way, home of another old favourite – the Salutation Inn. This ancient pub is now a proper rock ‘n’ roll venue with regular live music and colourful clientele – we enjoyed the company of members of local horror metal band Flirting with Corpses over a pint of Robinson’s Trooper. Real ciders are also available. Onto the castle area and two pubs, Fothergills and the Castle sit side by side in a very pleasant location with café style outdoor seating. A range of beers is available in both pubs including the recently revived Shipstones, now brewed in the city again. There was still time to visit the Crafty Crow on Friar Lane, the first pub to be owned by the local Magpie Brewery, and featuring two of their own brews plus a couple from Leatherbritches and four guests. Built into the rock of the Castle itself, Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem claims to be England’s oldest inn, and is a magnet for tourists. Despite, the hordes taking photographs, this is still a must-visit pub, with its quirky individual rooms, and, despite falling into the hands of Greene

King, still offers a pleasant ambience and choice of guest ales including two from Nottingham Brewery. As planned, this particular trip ended at the Vat & Fiddle, situated alongside the Castle Rock Brewery on Queensbridge Road. Although there’s such a

massive choice in the city now, I’m always drawn to this old favourite as the brewery (or what was the Tynemill brand of pubs) has done so much to revive real ale locally, and of course it’s only a short stagger back to the station. Chris Shilling

REViEWS The Yorkshire Beer Bible By Simon Jenkins, Great Northern Books, £11.99

beers worth tasting, plus pubs and breweries to seek out and with the proliferation of craft beers, presenting good ales from kegs and cans which are no longer seen as being a bad thing. This hard-backed volume inspires several options for pub crawls in the region’s towns and cities , plus more remote places worth going the extra mile for. Thank you Simon Jenkins for all your valuable research on our behalf. When next waiting for (or deliberately missing) a train while enjoying a pie and a pint at the York Tap at the railway station, we will raise a glass to you – cheers. David Brown

Subtitled “A drinker’s guide to the brewers, beers and pubs of God’s own country”, Jenkins presents a state of the county appraisal of brews from 178 contemporary brewers, acknowledging that number has probably already grown since publication as the ever-growing number of small breweries continues to thrive. Stepping back in time to the 1970s, the Yorkshire pubscape was populated by Tetley bittermen supping froth-topped pints served from electric pumps that served half-a-pint measures at the push of a switch, or you could still track down handpulled cask ales from the likes of Timothy Taylor, Theakston’s, John Smith’s and Samuel Smith’s. Pub guides then were usually thin, card-backed booklets that told you little about what to expect beyond brand names and whether they served food on a Monday lunchtime or not. Today there are many more

Benjamin Zephaniah – Revolutionary Minds CD, Fane Productions, FP 1CD Dr Zephaniah is back, sparking up enough fire to burn down the whole world. Dub first flowered in the early 70s back-to-back with the reggae culture of the Caribbean and Britain. At parties in flats and terraced houses they took the toasting of dancehall and turned it into a contemporary commentary upon their experience. From the first

shoots it had a political/social edge. Linton Kwesi Johnson was one of the first to breakthrough to a wider audience without ever losing his edge or being perceived to have sold out. Parallel to this, the young Benjamin was living a hard life in Birmingham. When he sings of the tribes of the cities, or the choices that people have to make, he knows what he is talking about. This album is his first in almost 12 years and shows he has lost none of his down to earth nature. His themes are social injustice, his passionate belief in veganism and his hopes that a better world is possible. He also is not afraid to include a love song and one track in Chinese (he actively studies Kung Fu, regularly travelling to China). Bravely he acknowledges that his appearances on TV might be seen as a mellowing, but clearly this is not the case. A wiser poet than me once said that if rap was news headlines, dub is a documentary. Here Benjamin Zephaniah has released a whole series of them. Buy it, play it, listen to it. Repeat. Cardinal Cox
