The late John Wood, pictured right, with the author on the left.

John Wood, founder of Oakham Ales has gone to the great brewery in the sky. His funeral was on Wednesday 8 February at Belton in Rutland, in the presence of more than 60 Morris dancers and members of Camra from many parts of the East Midlands A colourful, larger – never lager – than life character who was at the forefront of real ale production in the country, he established Oakham Ales in 1993 and soon a beer was launched that has become one of the most recognised real ales available today – Jeffery Hudson Bitter (JHB). This was soon followed by another of John’s successful brews, Bishop’s Farewell, which was brewed to commemorate the retirement of Bill Westwood as Bishop of Peterborough. A firkin of JHB was supplied at

John’s wake as a token of the brewery’s regards. The wake also saw 18 Morris dancers pounding their sticks on the floor and songs and tales were also performed as a tribute to ‘The Woodster’. John’s tipple of choice was real cider and he extolled its virtues at the drop of his Morris dancer’s top hat. John was a member of the Rutland Morris Band where with his striking white hair and beard was easily recognisable. Rutland Camra will name its cider bar Woodsters in tribute to John at their festival in Oakham

on 28 June to 1 July, where many a tankard will be raised. It is hoped Oakham Ales will produce a special in his name. He will be sadly missed by so many people in Rutland and across the UK. John Whowell, Chairman Rutland Camra Branch

The Holly Bush Inn Holly Bush Lane Makeney Belper Derbyshire DE56 0RX 01332 841729 hollybushinnmakeney.co.uk Situated just off the A61 north of Derby, this pub could not present a greater contrast to a town centre pub.you could be forgiven for thinking you’re in the wilds of Northumberland or Dartmoor. Once a farmhouse, the 17th century Grade II listed building has retained bags of character with small individual quarry-tiled rooms, three open fires, a tiny

bar with serving hatch reminiscent of a railway station ticket hatch leading out to a shack-like conservatory stuffed with artefacts including pub memorabilia and an red K6

telephone box. Overlooking the water meadows of the River Derwent, the pub is dog friendly and welcoming to walkers and families, providing children’s games, colouring books and a bar soccer table. Unusually, the inn sign is painted on the wall of the pub. A perfect hideaway, the tiny enclosed snug features a traditional cast iron range and high-backed settles. Alongside the permanent Marston’s Pedigree, served in jugs straight from the cask, six hand pumps serve top quality ever-changing beers – from Thornbridge, Timothy Taylor, Oakham, Dancing Duck, Brakspear and Greene King when we visited, along with Old Rosie cider, five other changing

ciders, fruit wines and a selection of single malt whiskies. The pub has won the local Camra pub of the year award on several occasions including 2015 and was the 2017 runner-up. They have also designated the interior as one of national importance. Hot food including Sunday roasts is confined to lunchtimes, though a good selection of pies, rolls and scotch eggs are available at all times along with local ‘pyclets’. Outside of the conservatory is a small garden and patio with impressive floral displays (and hanging baskets everywhere), though on this sunny afternoon there was a good crop of people in the car park. There’s occasional live music and regular beer festivals – the next is to be held over the Easter weekend (29-31 March). Chris Shilling

O n t h e ( Ti m e ) l a s h a visit to the pubs seen, however briefly, in Doctor Who.

The Clarence 53 Whitehall London SW1A 2HP 020 7930 4808 theclarencewhitehall.com One of the most iconic images from the early days of Doctor Who is of the Daleks in front of the Houses of Parliament. However, this shot never actually appeared on screen and was in fact taken for the Radio Times to promote the 1964 story The Dalek Invasion of Earth. The first Doctor Who story to feature substantial location filming, a major scene filmed around Westminster saw companion Barbara (Jacqueline Hill) and two resistance fighters make their escape across London. Making their way up Whitehall, towards Trafalgar Square, the red-brick Clarence can be spotted to the right of the shot, just past the statue of George, Duke of Cambridge.

Along with the Silver Cross and the Old Shades, the pub was one of five free houses on this stretch of road that was under the control of the Board of Green Cloth – part of the Royal Household that oversaw licensing within “the verge of the palace”, until The Licensing Act 2003 came into effect. Now part of young & Co’s Geronimo Inns brand, the Clarence mixes traditional and contemporary with stripped wooden floors and timbers reclaimed from a Thames pier) along with leather upholstery. It’s open plan but cosy, with the low light at the right level to feel relaxed but not dingy. The food menu features high end takes on classic pub grub such as sandwiches, fish and chips, and steak and ale pie to more gastro-style delights like Braised ox cheek with bone marrow mac and cheese. There’s also a private dining menu that can be enjoyed in

the Tin Belly Dining Room upstairs. But I was here for the beer and was happy to find six cask beers including Homerton N7, a very refreshing and hoppy IPA that made the £4.95 a pint price tag a little more palatable. The Clarence may be located near a tourist trap but it is a good quality boozer first and foremost. Once approved of by royalty, I do feel, however, its claim to being “the prime minister’s local” is more to do with location than the likelihood of her ever popping in.

Although Durham is over 180 miles from Peterborough, its position on the East Coast Main Line, means this historic city can be reached in just over two hours by rail. At around £100, the standard return fare will put most day trippers off, but as always, bargains can be found online, so our group took advantage of Virgin Trains East Coast’s winter sale and snapped up return tickets for a far more palatable £22.50 each. With a population of 65,000, Durham is by no means a large city, but it’s

head of steam

blessed with a number of good pubs, easily reached from the station. Following the slope 200 yards down from the station, two pubs sit opposite one another just under the rail viaduct. The Station House opens at 4pm, so we decided to leave it to last, opting instead for the Bridge Hotel. Open from 11am, this Star house, built in the mid 19th century for Irish navvies during the construction of the railway, still offers eight letting rooms, and a ‘2 for £12’ food range all day.

Real ales consist of Deuchars on permanently, with two more from the Heineken range (Theakston’s Hogshead and Belhaven Robert Burns when we visited). A right hand turn out of here brings you to Sutton Street, another right turn and you’ll see the Grade II listed Colpitts Hotel – a Samuel Smith pub which has changed little since Victorian times (other than now disused off sales hatch). There are real fires in both of the small rooms, and a wide range of bottled beers (some brewed at

The Bridge Hotel with The Station House opposite.

Melbourn’s in Stamford) along with the Old Brewery Bitter priced as the typically miserly rate of £2 per pint. Food is not served but this cosy pub offers a friendly welcome all day. Across the road and right onto Allergate, ye Old Elm Tree stands at the junction with Crossgate. Justifiably popular with the local Camra branch (it was voted Pub of the year in 2015 and 2016), there are six expertly kept ever-changing real ales priced from £3.30, on this occasion from Roosters, Rudgate, Turning Point, Smallwood and Castle Eden. Described by enthusiastic barmaid, Stacey, as “quirky and friendly”, there’s a pleasing mix

of ages enjoying the ambience in three separate rooms, one of which is adorned with local railway history displayed on posters. A good range of lunchtime food is priced at just £4.95, and the beef bap with chips and gravy proved too tempting. The Sunday carvery is also keenly priced at £7.95. The Angel, opposite, is one of three sister pubs (the others are the John Duck and the New Inn), but with a lack of real ale we carried on across the Framwellgate bridge into the Market Place The Market Tavern is an attractive Greene King pub on two levels, with the top room overlooking the indoor market, and displaying artefacts relating to Durham’s proud mining heritage, including union branch banners. As well as the compulsory IPA, draught Bass is usually available plus three from the local Maxim Brewery, now supplying brands from the former Vaux and Wards portfolios. Camra members are offered a 10% discount, and there’s a permanent cider in the shape of Weston’s Old Rosie. Over the road onto Saddler Street there’s the Shakespeare, another attractive building, with

individual panelled rooms, but a less enthusiastic welcome, and standard fare beer range of London Pride, Deuchars, Hobgoblin and Jennings Cumberland. The River Wear in this part of town forms a loop around the castle and cathedral, so an about turn back towards the Market Place and a right turn brings you to another crossing (Elvet Bridge) just before which is a recently opened gin bar – the Tin of Sardines, so named as it’s “probably the smallest gin bar in the world” with barely room to swing a cat. That said, the range of gins is incredible, and the mixes explained in ultimate detail by flamboyant host, Teddy. If gin is your thing, this is a must but be prepared to pay upward of £6 per drink. Just over the bridge, the Swan & Three Cygnets, is another Samuel Smith house, but less inviting than the Colpitts, so we carried on to the Grade I listed Half Moon Inn – an agreeable and again, very friendly M&B pub, decorated with old images of the pub and miner’s galas, and a good range of up to eight beers (and occasional beer festivals), but no food. The pub is named after the crescent shaped bar, and there’s

Teddy, Tin of sardines a large riverside beer garden, very busy in summer months. Back onto Old Elvet, the Enterprise owned Dun Cow is another listed building part of which dates back to the 15th century, and still requiring separate entrances to the two drinking areas. The log burners give a homely feel, but the beer quality (from Castle Eden, Black Sheep and Moorhouses) was average at best, so we crossed the street and through the car park of the law courts to the Court Inn. This busy pub is popular with legal staff (some wearing silks), but also locals, tourists and students and is very foody. Six beers are usually available, and the friendly

barmaid was only too happy to exchange a substandard pint for us. The beer range included Taylors, Greene King, Maxim, Harviestoun and Broughton when we called, and as a sister to the ‘Sardines’ there’s an impressive range of spirits including up to 120 gins. On past the prison, is the extent of our foray from the station – the Victoria Inn on Hallgarth Street. Another listed building, this family run pub oozes Victoriana, and offers a warm ambience and four-star accomodation. Beers from the Big Lamp brewery are always available along with three ever-changing guests, a real cider and wide range of malt whiskies. Food is restricted to snacks, so there’s a proper alehouse feel to the pub, and the local Camra branch have just awarded it the Pub of the year accolade for the 10th time. With less than an hour remaining before our train home, and two more must-try pubs to do, we had to make the tough decision to leave out the New Inn, John Duck and Woodman, all of which had been recommended by locals. So back across the river and onto North Road past Old Tom’s Gin Bar, the studenty William Hedley and the

JD Wetherspoon’s Water House, we took a right into Reform Place and arrived at the Head of Steam. Now supplied by Camerons’ there are five rotating real ales from breweries such as Allendale, Leeds, Black Iris and the local Sonnet Brew House, along with 10 craft beers and up to 300 bottled varieties. The young enthusiastic bar staff impressed us with their knowledge of the ales and history of the pub, but a lengthy discussion had to be cut short as we needed to try the current runner up to Pub of the year, the Station House – Durham’s first micropub. Perfectly situated for the station, drinkers are even afforded the luxury of screened train departure information, which goes as far as showing walking time to the station, drinking up time available and even the weather. The pub retains a proper alehouse feel, and there’s always a minimum of four well-kept ales available along with another four real ciders. Beer ‘takeways’ are available in two and four pint vessels, so if you happen to still be thirsty, there’s no need to settle for less agreeable refreshment on the train home. Chris Shilling

REvIEWS Great British Pub Dogs By Abie Lucas & Paul Fleckney, Robinson, hardback, £12.99

Long before pubs carried the vast range of drinks and savoury snacks that seem essential today, you could only be sure of a couple of standard items on the bar – other than the damp drip mats – a soda syphon and a screw top jar containing plain biscuits. The latter were not really intended for the customers’ consumption but were provided primarily for their dogs. Walking the dog has traditionally included calling at the local for much needed refreshment and well-behaved dogs remain a welcome sign of civilised character in our inns. So, it’s not surprising that Abie Lucas and Paul Fleckney should draw our attention to this aspect of pub life in this mostly photographic album that tells us much more about the dogs – and perhaps the British character as a whole – than the pubs themeselves. Subtitled “From Dachshunds to Great Danes, the Canine Residents of Britain’s Pubs” this quirky volume features 68 spreads devoted to various dog types found at hostelries around the UK including several London pubs, plus a selection of online competition winners for good measure. It’s great to think of a lethargic Bassett Hound in a laid-back lounge and more energetic breeds in a sporting bar, but it doesn’t always work that way and that is part of the charm – the sheer variety. Many favourite

Graham Fellows

breeds are included and there’s pubs that have two, three of four dogs – and even a pub pig.you’d be barking mad not to enjoy this book. David Brown Graham Fellows: Completely Out of Charater, Stamford ArtsCentre, 9 February For much of his career, Graham Fellows has hidden behind a character, either as an actor on shows such as Coronation Street or as the singers Jilted John and John Shuttleworth. However, as the tour title suggests, this show isn’t about the Johns but Graham instead. That’s not to say we missed out on his most famous creations, they made an occasional cameo mid-conversation. Over the course of two hours, we were entertained by stories of Fellows’ life and career, along with songs performed on the harmonium, guitar and, at one

point, ukulele. As well as material from the Johns, plus the Smithsstyle My Turn to Be Poorly – written by “rock musicologist and part time lecturer in Media Studies” Brian Appleton who claims Morrissey stole his ideas – we were treated to songs from Weird Town, Fellow’s first solo album since 1985’s Love at the Hacienda. Very much in the vein of Squeeze, these bittersweet songs cover the absurdities of everyday life – albeit a life that once saw the singer buy bread sauce with actor Mark Rylance (his then lodger) – and it’s certainly an album worth buying. But it was Fellows’ tales of his love for Gail Tilsley and the time George Melly broke into his bedsit (“Hello, Jilted Johnny”) that had the theatre in stitches and, unsurprisingly, a performance of Jilted John that guaranteed maximum audience participation.
