Pub News
Uppingham Marketplace from the Falcon Hotel
In Peterborough, or more specifically, Stanground, there’s mixed news as the former Fenman pub is to become a children’s nursery, and a question mark still remains over the Heron. However, the Whittle in Central Square has upped its game under former Black Bull, Whittlesey licensee Sarah Johnson, and now offers three cask ales including two guests, and regular live entertainment. Simon and Michelle, licensees of the Three Horseshoes in Yaxley, are leaving the pub in early May having been given notice by the owning EI Group. Further to our report in the last issue, it now seems that the Stilton Tunnels has reopened at least for the short term. Details of the 41st Peterborough Beer Festival have
been announced – running from Tuesday 21-Saturday 25 August in the usual marquees on The Embankment. Improvements include a doubling of the seating area and an ‘escape bar’ offering soft drinks from 50p. Along with more than 400 real ales plus ciders/perries and wines, last year’s successful Gin Bar returns with around 50 varieties available – refundable gin and wine glasses will be available along with the usual pint and half pint beer glasses. Ryhall’s Stoneyford Brewery ceased trading in April after outgrowing its current premises. In a statement the owners said: “We are proud of the beers and the brand we have developed but we haven’t managed to take the next major growth step.” It is possible that the brewery will
reappear in a different guise. Meanwhile over in Uppingham, owners of the Falcon Hotel are planning to open a new microbrewery. Director James Torbell told R&B: “During renovations we discovered plans showing the hotel had a brew house many years ago. Initially we will be brewing for our own sites including the Vaults and Don Paddy’s opposite before potentially supplying other local establishments.” The Kings Arms at Wing has won Midlands Best Pub at the Countryside Alliance’s annual awards. The Railway Inn in Oakham is now offering a monthly Blues night with special guests, jam sessions and open mic opportunities. Also in Oakham, The Grainstore is doing its bit for the environment by abolishing plastic straws in favour Continued over

Pub News (continued) of ‘eco’ straws and wooden stirrers. Over the county border with Northamptonshire, the White Swan at Harringworth closed again in early March. The Kings Arms at Polebrook is currently closed for refurbishment. A new micro pub has opened in Stamford’s St Mary’s Hill. The Copper Room specialises in craft keg beers (up to 60 available in draft, bottled and canned varieties) but also offers a range of real ales, served straight from the cask, and featuring brands not readily available in the town. Rob Savill (formerly of the William Cecil and Bull & Swan) and co-owner Liam Kavanagh (formerly of London’s Craft Beer Company) are local men, keen to tap into the craft market but also to provide a wide range of small batch spirits along with wines, coffees and snacks. The bar is open all day Tuesday-Sunday from 10.30 am, and short-term plans include the opening of a cellar bar/function room. The Pear Tree in Stamford’s Broad Street has reportedly closed. The Blue Bell
at Easton on the Hill holds its 11th beer festival over the late May Bank Holiday weekend. Starting on Thursday evening, and featuring a Northern Soul night (Fri), an Easton’s Got Talent event (Sat) and a village fete (Mon), the main band day is now the Sunday with seven live acts in the marquee along with up to 24 real ales and 10 ciders. Organisers of the annual Deepings Raft Race are appealing for entrants into the Pub Race category at this year’s event to be held on 6 August. This year’s theme is Heroes & Villains and teams of two to eight can apply
at www.deepingsraftrace.co.uk Once on the route of that event, the Old Coach House closed suddenly in March. Rumours abound that the substantial building may be converted into flats. Up the road in Baston, the Baskervilles has also closed due to liquidation. The Olde White Horse in Spalding is now in the hands of Carrie Lawrence and her business partner, Chris Healey. Along with Dave, their talking parrot, they’ve breathed new life into this iconic pub. Recent developments include the introduction of lunchtime snacks
The Thatched Cottage, Sutterton
including pork pies and sausage rolls, along with a weekly Sunday quiz. Also in Spalding, the Punchbowl looks likely to join the Hole in the Wall and the Lincolnshire Poacher on the closed list. The latter was the subject of a major refurbishment only two years ago and is for sale with Davey & Co for £320,000. The owner of the Chequers at Gedney Dyke is planning to convert the building into private dwellings. The pub has been on the market since 2015, but locals are hoping that the property can continue to serve the village
Blue Bell, Easton on the Hill
as a pub. The attractive Thatched Cottage at Sutterton, near Boston is open again after 18 months of closure, and has been sympathetically restored as a free house. The pub is open for food and drink at lunchtimes and evenings during the week and all day at weekends. Three cask ales are usually available. The Coach & Horses in Boston has been sold. The Bustard at South Rauceby changed hands in April – Julian and Lesley are planning to run the popular pub/restaurant along
similar lines as previous licensee Liz Hewitt. Residents of Leasingham, near Sleaford have formed a Community Benefit Society to raise the £250,000 needed to purchase the Duke of Wellington – the last remaining pub in the village. They have until 20 May to raise the required funds. The recently saved Geese & Fountain in Croxton Kerrial has been named Belvoir Camra Pub of the Year. The Grantham branch has named the Red Lion at Newton as their Pub of the Year. Pubs no more The long closed Silver Jubilee at Bretton suffered another arson attack over Easter and is now likely to be demolished to make way for homes. The former Essendine Hotel building near Stamford is up for sale with www.reidcommercial.co.uk Plans to convert the 19th century former Bell Inn at Pinchbeck have been dropped due to then poor state of the building. The closed Bull Hotel in Holbeach is for sale with planning permission for conversion at £180,000. Chris Shilling

Chequers Inn Claypit Lane Ledsham Nr Castleford West Yorkshire LS25 5LP 01977 683135 www.thechequersinn.com Any regular visitor to Yorkshire and the North via the A1 will be familiar with the giant nowclosed power station near the junction with the M62 at Ferrybridge. A mile or so west of the next junction (42) lies the pretty village of Ledsham, home of the Chequers Inn. Dating from the 16th century, this pub combines top notch food with expertly kept real ales, mostly from local breweries.
Landlord Chris Wraith is a Camra supporter and has been the custodian of this characterful local for over 30 years,
maintaining high standards throughout. Ledsham is a tiny village reached by a single track road,
but the pub car park offers ample space – from here the pathway leads through a large flagstoned yard into a passageway with small separate rooms either side, each with low beamed ceilings and real fires. From the central wood panelled bar, four of the five hand pumps permanently offer beers from the Theakston, Timothy Taylor, Brown Cow and Leeds breweries with a changing guest ale. From the foyer area, stone steps lead upstairs to a larger carpeted dining area/function room which gets packed at weekends, so if you’re planning to eat it’s best to ring in advance. We dined at the pub on a Sunday and the generously portioned roast pork loin was one of the best I’ve tasted – well worth the £14.95 price tag. Non-roast options are available too, with a more extensive menu on other days. Outside is a sizeable terraced patio area on two levels with tables among the impressive floral displays. The pub is dog and family friendly, and should you need it, wifi enabled. Local sports and motoring clubs meet here, and it’s popular with walkers. Awards have come thick and fast over the years, indeed the Chequers was voted local (Harrogate & Ripon) Camra Rural Pub of the Year in each of the years between 2014 and 2017. Until recently, the Chequers was one of few pubs to hold a six day licence and even now is closed on Sunday evenings. Otherwise the pub is open all day every day from 11am (12-6pm Sundays), with food served from 12 noon until 9pm (5pm Sundays). Chris Shilling
RAiLRoViNG
HULL The ancient port city of Hull (or Kingston-upon-Hull, to give it its full title) is only a hundred miles or so from Peterborough, but rail fares booked spontaneously come in at over £100, so it’s best to look at advance fares and better still, to break the journey into smaller chunks. On the Virgin Trains East Coast website, I found a return to Doncaster at just over £30, and as two of us travelled together, an add-on
Bethany at the Head of Steam
Northern Duo fare from Doncaster to Hull at £14 each. The rich maritime history of this town, given City of Culture status in 2017, makes any visit a fascinating day out with many artefacts and old photographs appearing in the pubs. After a cheeky half between trains in the Draughtsman situated on platform 3b at Doncaster station, we arrived at our destination around two
OLD TOwn
hours after departure from Peterborough. A right turn outside Paragon station and a left into Anlaby Road/Carr Lane brings you to the Admiral of the Humber – a large JD Wetherspoon which was full of diners, but offering a good range of up to 10 hand pulled beers. The Ebenezer Morley opposite did not appeal, nor did Marston’s Punch Hotel, so we carried on past the Town Hall, over the
Minerva Tavern
Mission
bridge and right into Princes Dock Street, a pleasant waterside location with a variety of bars and bistros. The best of these is Furley & Co, named after a defunct shipping company, and now a modern café bar offering an extensive range of five Yorkshire real ales (from Yorkshire Brew Co, North Riding, Turning Point, Atom and Half Moon), six ciders and a dozen or so craft keg beers. The home cooked black pudding and chorizo scotch egg at £4, seemed an ideal brunch offering and an excellent accompaniment to the well-kept local ales. Tucked behind in the cobbled
olde Blue Bell
Posterngate is the Mission – a remarkable conversion of an old church and adjoining buildings which presents a unique drinking environment, but on our visit offering just one example from the owning Old Mill brewery range. We stopped briefly to appreciate the stained glass and maritime artefacts, then headed on along the cobbles into the Old Town area, and a quick look in at Marston’s Kingston Hotel (four Marston’s beers) before arriving at the Head of Steam – a friendly town centre pub offering beers from the owning Cameron’s stable, Leeds brewery, four changing guests (from Brass
castle, Northern Monk, Tiny Rebel) and a cider from Gwynty-Draig). Welcoming barmaid, Bethany, and her manager Jake Green offered us samples of both the weakest beer (Little Imp at 2.8%) and the delicious but dangerously powerful Northern Monk Sticky Toffee (10%) which would normally be charged at £5 per half pint. Heading along Fish Street, across the dual carriageway and alongside the marina stands the Humber Dock Bar & Grill – an extended bistro pub offering a mere token gesture to real ale in the shape of Doom Bar, so we persevered to the end of the road to reach the glorious Minerva Tavern, once home to the Minerva Brewery. This multiroomed pub has retained much of its character, including the ‘smallest pub room’, good food from around £8, retired seafarers swapping stories of old, and walls laden with history and memorabilia. Across the square, if you’re so inclined, stands one of the best examples of Victorian public urinals anywhere in the country. A left turn up Queen Street and Market Place, past the closed King William, look out for a
Two views of the Lion & Key
passeway leading left to the Olde Blue Bell – a Samuel Smiths house dating from the 1790s but reminiscent of a 1970s working men’s club, full of local characters, an upstairs games room, real fire, bell pushes above the seats which were presumably once used to order drinks, and of course Old Brewery Bitter at £2 per pint. A little further along, another lane (Silver Street) leads to Vintage – a former jewellers converted to a pub in 2017 and now serving six beers from Gene Pool, Ringwood,Yorkshire Brewhouse and Crafty Little breweries. There’s also a wide range of spirits and vintage
covers of Playboy magazine above the front door. Good pubs come thick and fast in this part of town, and a little further along is the 17th century Olde White Harte – a fantastic panelled pub with giant inglenooks, but offering average beers from the Heineken range including permanent Old Peculier, and a slightly spurious claim to house a spooky upstairs ‘plotting room’ supposedly dating from the Civil War. Along Scale Lane is Walters – home to range of eight real ales, from Junction, Derby, Fletchers, Hill Top and Cathead breweries, and featuring an impressive display of iconic album covers. This leads to the High Street, where the Lion & Key is famous for its fish dishes, and the local speciality ‘Pattie’ did not disappoint. The pub houses the largest collection of beermats and pump clips I’ve seen for some time, 14 hand pumps including four from its own Cathead brewery next door, other Yorkshire brews and changing guests from further afield. Further along the High Street, the Olde Black Boy dates form the 18th century, and despite its
Enterprise ownership, retains bundles of character, and offers beers from breweries as diverse as Adnams, Wye Valley, Harviestoun and Saltaire. We bypassed the Three John Scotts (JD Wetherspoon) and the soon-to-reopen White Hart (renowned for its rare ceramic fronted bar), to get to the George Hotel in the delightfully named Land of Green Ginger – home to Hull’s legal quarter. This Georgian gem, the local Pub of the Year 2017, is not actually a hotel, but the former gatehouse to a much larger establishment that once stood behind. It features ‘England’s smallest pub window’, which was originally used as a lookout for approaching carriages. Anything up to seven real ales can be found here, often from Yorkshire breweries. The station can easily be reached from here in less than 10 minutes. We had hoped to take in three other legendary Hull watering holes, on the north side of this fascinating city, but time defeated us, so the Bay Horse, Hop & Vine and the three times Pub of the Year, the Whalebone will have to wait for another day. Evidently… John Cooper Clarke
John Cooper Clarke certainly rose to prominence in the punk era of the late 1970s but he had been actively writing his material that he performed at various northern venues including Working Men’s Clubs for a few years before that. He has credited Pam Ayres’ success on Opportunity Knocks and then other TV shows for inspiring him to hope that he could make a living from his poetry. With his birds-nest hair do and sharp suit he became a regular support act for northwest bands such as Buzzcocks, Joy Division (which he recreated in the film Control) and the Fall, plus visitors to the region such as the Sex Pistols, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and Elvis Costello. His first EP, Innocents came out in 1977 and he has had six albums released, either solo, with backing from the Invisible Girls (featuring Joy Division/New Order producer Martin Hannett, Buzzcock’s Pete Shelley and Bill Nelson of Be-Bop Deluxe) and most recently on This Time It’s Personal (covering some classic songs) with Hugh Cornwell. In the mid-80s his work slowed up, which coincided with a ‘domestic arrangement’ with the singer Nico and his heroin addiction. Though when challenged about this period on a BBC Two arts programme, he infamously replied: “Don’t blame the heroin. It has a bad enough reputation as it is without blaming it for my laziness.” While other poets might have done adverts for Waitrose or Prudential he has been in adverts for Sugar Puffs and McCain Oven Chips. His track Evidently Chickentown featured in the last episode of The
Sopranos and was recited by Christopher Eccleston in the TV film Strumpet. The Arctic Monkeys have used one poem on the cover of the Fluorescent Adolescent single and adapted another (I Wanna Be Yours) for the album AM. He even appeared on an academics’ edition of Pointless (he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Salford in 2013. His comment was: “Now I’m a doctor, finally my dream of opening a cosmetic surgery business can become a reality”). Along with such disparate
voices as Linton Kwesi Johnson, Attila the Stockbrocker, Joolz, Porky the Poet and Peterborough’s own Big J (Janine Booth), John Cooper Clarke delivered a much needed kick to the arse of poetry in the late 70s and early 80s. With his forthcoming gig at The Key Theatre, Peterborough on 12 July, we can expect a mix of rapid-fire delivery of the poems and sprawling, laconic chat between, spreading jokes as though with a verbal butterknife.
