the rhythm section “She was part of the family,” says Zeb Rootz founder, Steve Baker, remembering his colleague Jocelyn ‘Bebberly’ Harris who died on 11 August. “She only got the diagnosis on 3 August, it really stopped me in my tracks.” Hailing from Leicester, Joyce had previously – alongside Zeb Rootz rhythm section Fitzroy Simon and Trevor Michael – been a member of the Pressure Tenants, the Leicester-based backing band of “the Godfather of Ska” Laurel Aitken. Despite leaving Zeb Rootz after their New Year’s Eve 2016 show, she remained close to the band and continued to work with Steve as a member of the Aces, Desmond Dekker’s former band. Two weeks after Joyce’s death, Zeb Rootz were joined on stage by her sister Janet who paid, in Steve’s words “a perfect tribute to Joyce, it was emotional and the audience was with us all the way.” For more on Zeb Roots, visit www.zebrootz.co.uk or look in the listings guide for dates.

Andy Simmonds, landlord of the Ploughman in Werrington, has won a 10-year battle with original owner Tesco and developers who sought to redevelop the site. Andy, who has a long history of raising money for local charities, has signed a 15-year lease, and plans to renovate the pub – he also now has the option to buy the building outright. Meanwhile, business partner and brother Stuart has departed to launch a new pub business in Devon. Also raising money for charity is Nick Goodman at the Iron Horse Ranch House in Market Deeping. Currently undergoing treatment himself, Nick’s events have raised thousands of pounds for cancer charities. The 2018 Peterborough Beer Festival saw a slight decline in numbers this year but still attracted an impressive 26,000 visitors. Champion beer was Crowstone from the Leigh-onSea brewery. Local successes include Barn Ale from Tydd (second in Standard Bitters and pale ales) and Bakers Dozen/ Three Blind Mice took gold in the Strong Bitters/pale ales category for Citra Lord Glucan. other brother, Steve, has the Frothblowers in Werrington. It is hoped the new pub, formerly Twiggy’s gift shop at 102 High St, will open by the end of the year. The Stanground area has seen the loss of most of its pubs in recent years, the latest of which, the Heron, closed its doors in September. Just outside our distribution area, the Cock at Hemingford Grey, near Huntingdon has been awarded 2019 National Pub of the Year by the Good Pub Guide, while the Grainstore in Oakham receives the accolade of time. There are new listings for the Castle at Castle Bytham and the Wheatsheaf in Langham. The 2019 Camra Good Beer Guide includes new listings for the Bluebell at Helpston, Frothblowers in Werrington, the Woolpack in Stanground, the Yard of Ale, Peterborough and the George Hotel, Whittlesey. (Contin by Tom Bradshaw and two “beer loving” associates. The core range includes YFM, Rusty Giraffe, a milk stout and a best bitter, with monthly specials including a homage to the former Soames & Co, which brewed in the town between 1887 and 1949. Bottled beers are also available and a tap house is planned for the future. Currently supplying to beer festivals and micropubs, they can be contacted via www. wellandbrewery.co.uk or by calling 07732 033702. Now closed again, the asking price for the substantial Lincolnshire Poacher on Double Street in Spalding, has been reduced to £255,000. The Danish Invader in Stamford celebrated 50 years in September. Landlord, Chris Needham, has been in charge for the past 17 years, transforming a run-down location into a thriving family community pub. Chris plans to introduce a daily food menu – currently limited to a Sunday carvery. Dan Bourner, manager at Melbourn Bros in Stamford for the past 12 months is now promoting brewery tours to the adjacent Victorian brew house. Visitors can view the brewing process which takes place several times a year – all of the beer being bottled, the majority for export. Open all day from 12 noon, the pub offers draught beers from just £2 per pint, a greater range of bottled beer than any other Samuel Smith pub, a monthly quiz and food service (including Sunday roasts) lunchtimes and evenings. Now in the hands of Paul Frith, the fortunes of the Bell Tavern in Deeping St James have been turned around. EI

Group had threatened to sell the pub off, but Paul has now – future plans include extending the live music programme. The Baskervilles in Baston is expected to reopen on 1 November under its original name the Black Horse (another pub, the White Horse, is also in the village). New owners are Alan Coates and Richard Fox who also have Deeping Stage. The Toft Hotel and Golf Club at Toft, near Bourne has been bought by Tom Munt, formerly manager at Saffron Walden Golf Club. The pub paddock at the Olive Branch, Clipsham, is to become a “sustainable, organic kitchen garden” supplying the popular pub/restaurant, voted Leicestershire and Rutland’s Dining Pub of the Year, and a Top Ten Pub in the Good Pub Guide. The George & Dragon at Seaton, near Uppingham reopened a year ago by Ralph Offer, is now a thriving operation again after a major refurbishment to the building and garden Mike and Karen Willgoose called time at the George

Hotel in Leadenham at the end of September after an incredible 48 years. The Crown & Anchor at Welby near Grantham has now reopened – the Everards owned pub is now in the hands of Larry Humphries and Janice Matthews. Grantham Camra teamed up with St Wulfran’s Church to stage their October Beer Festival. Local brewer Oldershaw named a beer Father Stuart after the vicar of St Wulfran’s who helps to organise the event – he obliged in blessing the beer prior to the launch. Also in Grantham, the Beerheadz micro pub has just served up its 1,000th different beer. The Stagger Inn in the town is to undergo a major refurbishment. Steve and Sherry Hartmann. New tenants at the Pincushion in Wyberton near Boston, are refurbishing the pub, and have plans to reintroduce food and live entertainment. Also receiving a new lease of life is the New Inn in Boston, now serving two real ales, daily food and entertainment most weekends. Chris Shilling

Plough & Harrow 120–124 King Street Hammersmith London W6 0QU 020 8735 6020 A few years back, The Guardian reported that “a creeping blight has started to drift across British drama. Look anywhere a Krishnan Guru Murphy or a Sian Williams reacting to life studios.” It was probably Doctor newsreader into a drama series, when Kenneth Kendall appeared in 1966’s The War Machines to warn that “further attacks on London can be expected in the next 24 hours.” More recently, the likes of Andrew Marr and, cameos on the show, along with scientists Sir Patrick Moore, Dr Richard Dawkins and Professor Brian Cox. Cox’s cameo, in 2012’s The Power of Three, was shot outside the Holiday Inn Express in Hammersmith, which has a JD Wetherspoon pub, the Plough & Harrow, to the front of it. An earlier pub of the same been “Established in 1419”, stood on the site until 1903 when it was rebuilt. It closed in the late 1950s, becoming the showroom and workshop of Harold Radford Coachbuilders Ltd – the company behind the luxury Mini Cadillac importers Lendrum & Hartman. After rebuilding work, which saw the façade demolished

and reconstructed a metre higher than before, the pub and hotel was opened in 2002. The pub goes quite a way back and has a mix of dining tables, booths and high café tables. In fact, it looks like one of Wetherspoon’s cinema

before World War One. as there are large pillars against of the entire bar, which means

Sadly, there wasn’t any Cosmic Brew, Professor Cox’s recent collaboration with his local Oldham brewery JW Lees. An interesting pub all the same, at the better end of the JDW spectrum, it takes its name from a side street opposite, which was once called Plough and Harrow Lane. Later renamed Waterloo Street, it has been Macbeth Street since the interwar years and back in 1988 was the location of another Doctor Who story, Remembrance of the Daleks.

Southampton Arms Ale & Cider House 139 Highgate Rd Kentish Town London NW5 1LE 07375 755539 southamptonarms.co.uk The message on the pub’s website is concise and to the point: “As far as we know, we are the only dedicated ale and cider house in London to sell only beers and ciders from small independent breweries.” It might seem like a bold

claim, but what is for sure is that this pub is unlike any other I have visited. I can’t really put my favourite pub in the capital. It could be the simple message painted on the pub wall, visible as you approach on the 10-minute walk up Highgate Road from Kentish Town tube station – “ALE… CIDER…MEAT”. This is a no-frills pub in the extreme – a single, unshaded lightbulb hangs from a cable in in a front of a large window to the busy street scene outside. There are no fruit machines,

pool table, dartboard or jukebox, mobile phone reception is poor and they don’t even have a

landline. A single meat cabinet is home to a roasted along with pork pies, cheese rolls and other veggie options. There’s a small outdoor drinking area, toilet

HINCKLEY

With a population just under 50,000, Hinckley is the third largest town in Leicestershire after Leicester and Loughborough. Its position on the Peterborough-Birmingham railway line makes it a convenient destination for a rail trip with a standard day return fare of £29 and travelling time of around an hour and a quarter, usually involving a change of trains at Leicester. Furthermore, Hinckley and Bosworth Camra have a very useful ‘Ale Trail’ map which can be printed off from their website, so this formed the basis for our visit. Our 30-minute wait at Leicester allowed the

Elbow Room

opportunity of a cheeky half in the Parcel Yard alongside Leicester station, and an 11.36am arrival at Hinckley was perfect for opening time at the Railway Inn just across from the station. Part of the Steaming Billy group, this pub offered a friendly welcome, four well kept beers from their own range and a changing guest ale, usually from a local brewery. Barmaid Ella and manager Adam were keen to talk about the pub – there are still individual rooms and a sizeable beer garden, food is served lunchtimes and evenings, there’s jazz on a Wednesday lunchtime and a quiz every Sunday. For £2, a ‘Billy Card’ can be purchased

giving approximately 10% discount off beers, lagers, wines and food in all of the dozen or so pubs in the chain. A few minutes walk up the hill is the Elbow Room – a very agreeable micropub run by Camra members, but not open until 2pm, so we diverted right onto Mount Road, to the Citizens Club – a members only establishment but open to Camra members. The Bass and Doom Bar are cheap but not of a great quality on our visit – the barman didn’t seem overly interested in us so we moved back down Mount Road, across Station Road and into Coventry Road to another Steaming Billy

Two views of the Railway Inn.

pub – the White Bear. Open 12-4pm and 7-11pm, there are couple of house beers plus guests from Fullers and Bad Company on our visit. The pub brands itself as ‘Burgers & Brews’ – with a wide range of burger options, and a decent sized outdoor drinking area including converted garages known as the ‘Bear Pit’. Towards the town centre along Regent Street is the Baron of Hinckley – a typically comfortable but heaving JD Wetherspoon, with up to eight beers available. The tables are arranged so close to the

get served so we moved across the road to the Bounty. Partly wood panelled, with a separate function room and commanding a prime spot in the centre of the town, this must have once been an impressive destination pub. Now, however, it seems to be the preserve of pool-playing teenagers, though the draught Bass and Robinson’s James Blonde were drinkable. At the end of the road is Union Inn – a pleasant and busy open plan Marston Pub – and a favourite of the town centre faithful. Beers are limited to the Marston’s Two views of the White Bear

range, with Hobgoblin Gold, Pedigree and a very tasty Saddle Tank available. Across the road the Dog & Gun, a former Marston pub but now a free house with limited beer range (Marston’s again). The pub is very clean and tidy with a number of ‘life messages’ and sayings on plaques around the pub. It’s ‘nice’ but more akin to a tea shop – there are occasional live acts. Along Castle Street, past the church is the Pestle & Mortar – also open from 2pm – another good micropub, formerly a shop under a number of owners, now serving up to six well kept real

ales and a vast range of real ciders. The local Camra branch voted the pub its Cider Pub of the Year from 2016 to the present, and East Midlands Cider Pub of the Year in 2016. Pies and snacks are served alongside the excellent beer range. Onto the street known as New Buildings the Greyhound is more of a traditional locals’ boozer, but does have its own Elliswood beers alongside the ubiquitous Marston’s brands. Two house beers area available, and the pub offers darts and a function room. The Marston’s owned New Plough Inn on Leicester Road had not opened by 5pm, so we checked out the attractive

Weaver’s Arms – yet another Marston’s house, but offering up to three guest ales, from Elgood’s and Eagle brewery when we looked in. With the Black Horse also not open until evening. We popped into the Queens Head on Upper Bond Street – a lovely Victorian ex-Pub of the Year – open from 5pm and offering a good range of usually four changing beers. St Austell Proper Job, Thornbridge Jaipur and Butty Bach from Wye Valley are beers to grace any quality watering hole, but our visit was brief as we still had the current Pub of the Year to do on our way back down to the station: Housed in an unremarkable modern unit underneath

Cineworld, the family run Elbow Room micropub is unusually branded as a “Camra pub”, but with six changing beers mainly from micro-breweries, served straight from the cask, plus craft kegs/lagers, world beers and up to eight ciders, there really is something for every beer drinker here. The décor follows an industrial style, and the staff are knowledgeable and friendly. Food comes in the form of pork pies and scotch eggs. It would be easy to forget your train by leaving this until last, so it may be prudent to build in time for a last gasp half back in the Railway Inn, as it’s so convenient for the train home. Cadenhead’s Whisky Shop & Tasting Room 26 Chiltern Street Marylebone London W1U 7QF 020 7935 6999 whiskytastingroom.com With a fondness for cask beer, I know very little about whisky other than that single malt is meant to be the best. So I thought it best to seek some advice in choosing a bottle. Cadenhead’s, which was founded in Aberdeen in 1842, is Scotland’s oldest independent bottler. Owning thousands of casks for bottling or laying down, it’s little wonder that the shelves in its shop close to Baker Street station are packed full of whiskies. In the front you Scottish distilleries – including parent company J & A Mitchell & Co Ltd’s own Springbank and Glengyle distilleries in Campbeltown, “the original whisky capital” – while the back room features whiskies from Ireland and Japan, along with rum, brandy and gin. The downstairs tasting room sees regular use throughout the week; including a daily on Wednesday, Thursday and Fridays the Trip Around Scotland Tasting Evening. The latter, priced £35 each, is an hour and three quarters session, featuring malts from across Scotland, a selection of canapés and a lively presentation on the history of whisky, its production and the

effects of wood styles, regions and ageing on taste. session, from complete novices to those with more of a passing acquaintance with whisky. The session was led by Joel who introduced us to the Glencairn whisky glass, a tulip shaped glass that captures the aroma of whisky. We each had a glass dropper, to allow us to add a little water to the whisky, which splits the oil and resin in the drink. Spring water (“any spring water as long as it’s still”) is recommended as the volcanic elements in mineral can change the taste. Ice is a no no as the change of temperature shuts down the taste and, of course, melts introducing tap Selecting a whisky is all down to personal taste, or as Joel says: “You like what you like, life’s too short to worry,” and the same goes for how much water you add, “there’s no need to suffer.”

The same goes for what to eat with your whisky; there was a great spread at the tasting including Stilton cheese, smoked salmon and caviar on oatcakes, really is a case of personal taste whether you have something sweet or savoury. strength whiskies (some their whiskies when bottling, Cadenhead’s doesn’t), we got to try a 32-year-old Cognac. But my favourite of all the drams that night was a 14-year-old single malt from Benrinnes Distillery in Speyside. Now owned by Diageo, much of the distillery’s output goes towards its blends such as Johnnie Walker and J&B. But this well-rounded whisky, with a perfect as it is and I can see why William Cadenhead thought it a good idea to start bottling and selling single malts in the
