After many years without a pub, since the closure of the Coach & Horses and the White Hart, the Fletton area of Peterborough has a new micropub. The Wonky Donkey opened at the start shop on Fletton High Street – a short hop from the Ex-Service & Working Men’s Club. The building there. Run by brothers Andrew and Dave Williams, the pub is currently open WednesdayFriday from 4pm, and all day from noon at weekends. Eight well kept cask beers and around a dozen real ciders are currently available with an emphasis on local breweries such as Xtreme, Cliffe, though national brands will also be available. Currently seen doing a few shifts behind the bar is Meri Hyde, whose pub – the Heron in nearby Stanground – closed late last year. The Frothblowers in Werrington, run by another Williams brother, Steve and business partner John Lawrence,

The Wonky Donkey’s Dave Williams.

has been voted Peterborough Camra Pub of the Year for 2019 Bumble Inn, Yard of Ale and Charters. John also runs the Blue Bell in the village – the lease of the nearby Three Horseshoes is reportedly up for sale. A previous Camra award winning pub – the Letter B in with www.everardcole.co.uk Peterborough based Oakham Ales has stepped into the craft beer market with a range of heavily hopped American-style canned beers. The tenancy of the Blue Bell at Dogsthorpe is reportedly up for grabs. Out at Ramsey, the Railway has reopened as a free house. The organisers of the annual Deepings Beer Festival, traditionally held at the Rugby Club have decided not to run the event this year. The Packhorse in Northborough

closed temporarily in January after the licensee departed due to “unforeseen circumstances”. Owner Star Pubs is looking for a new tenant. Samuel Smith pub St Mary’s Vaults in Stamford has a new manager. Rose Henthorn was already working at the pub when the previous managers left at the end of December. She has immediately reintroduced a food offering. Dean Baker and Jill Perkins were expected to be leaving the Jolly Brewer by the time this issue appears after 13 successful years, as they concentrate on the brewing operation at the Baker’s Dozen brewery in nearby follow, but new licensee Antal Csakvari and his partner Olivia have pledged to improve the food offering while maintaining the high quality of real ales. Chef Antal who has lived in the town

(Contin since moving from Hungary, and has worked at the London Inn and the Crown will be concentrating on English cuisine and introducing Sunday roasts. Ian Cartmell, licensee of the Cross Keys at Kings Cliffe, departed suddenly at the end of December – the pub is still open, but back in the hands of the previous lessee. The Kings Head at Wadenhoe, near Oundle has closed and faces an uncertain future. Sally Facer, owner of the Falcon at Fotheringhay has put the pub/ restaurant on the market with KSA Commercial for £895k. The former Town Hall in Bourne is currently being refurbished as a community space which will include a bar and meeting rooms. Local tradespeople in nearby Billingborough have got behind Nigel and Carol Freedman, licensees at the Fortescue Arms in the village to offer their services for free in reviving the Grade II listed pub. The Brass Windmill at Helpringham, near Sleaford is now in the

Olive Branch, Clipsham

hands of Liz Squires and Alan moving north from Milton Keynes – they’ve introduced a weekly Sunday quiz and live entertainment along with guest ales. The 17th century Houblon Arms at Oasby has reopened after a year of closure and complete refurbishment. In Spalding, Bob and Mandy anniversary of the reopening of the Waters Edge by pledging to introduce locally sourced food and continue with regular live music. Also, in Spalding, the Welland Brewery has

introduced bottled beers, available alongside its cask ales at the Priors Oven in the town – the brewery has also applied for a licensee to open the brewery for events. The Plough at Holbeach St John is now in the hands of Jane and Bill Wright. In Oakham the Rutland Camra Beer Festival returns to Rutland County Museum in June/July. The Olive Branch at Clipsham has been included in the Top Ten Pubs with Rooms in the national Food and Travel magazine. Pubs no more An application has been made to demolish the closed Duke of York in Boston to make way for more positive note, the former Railway Social Club in the town has been given approval to become a new bar and restaurant. The former pub in Stamford remains derelict nearly four years after closure. Plans to convert it to a convenience store seem to have been shelved. The recently closed Birds pub in Spalding is to be redeveloped as a care home. Chris Shilling

But First, the News

A Two Ronnies-themed micropub is to open at Easton on the Hill. The tiny Four Candles, set in the garden of landlord Alf Spirool’s home, mixes his love of traditional pubs with his fondness for the comedy duo. As well as memorabilia

connected to Messers Corbett and Barker lining the walls, food and drink with a Two Ronnies connection will be served. Popular drinks on offer include one sack of coal, two large rocks, one pair of pink boobs, an enormous lemon and a large pale lady (on the house) – all served

in four-handled tankards – while the limited food menu menu includes dishes such as mnx. A state-of-the-art airconditioning system has been installed, keeping the micropub cool in the summer and able to deal with winter Frost Reports. Despite its size, there’s also space for a games room and a piano (pismronunciated “pea-aresquish team. “Squish?” I asked a little puzzled. “Yes,” replied Alf, “it’s a super game and I’ve got to go to a place called Lord’s tomorrow to meet two chaps called Botham and Willis, to play a game called cracket or something.” The Four Candles opens on 1 April. A report on the opening will feature in the next issue.

the walking and the wildlife. The island is only three miles long, so there’s time to walk the full length and back to the pub in time for a decent meal and a couple of pints before heading back to the boat. Reached by a short but steep walk up from the tiny landing stage, the pub offers warmth on a cold day and a pleasant beer garden with spectacular views when the sun’s out. Indeed, I was advised that the scenic view from the gents is the best anywhere in the UK (you really need to try it). Not surprisingly, there are no mod cons in this place, but a very pleasing nautically themed interior, basic but good food offering such as pasties, jacket potatoes, vegetarian options and local Lundy lamb. The pub doesn’t actually close, and is the only place on the island with 24-hour electricity, but alcohol is only available from 11am. If you’re stopping on the island, you can open an account for the duration of your stay, settling up as you leave. Three real ales are usually available at prices from £3.40 to £4 per pint. There’s usually something from the St Austell brewery, one from the Country Life brewery, based over the water at Westward Ho!, and another local brew, a very tasty Barnsey from Bath Ales when we visited. Opening times are 11am-11pm daily, with food served at lunchtimes and evenings. Chris Shilling

Redoubt

Timothy Taylor and not-so-local Burton Bridge and Exmoor. Of the others, only the Wagon looked interesting with its claim as a “beer emporium”, but a look through the window provided no evidence of anything other than keg beer. The Redoubt appears to have survived any attempt at modernisation. The four individual rooms have been retained, and the welcome is warm. There are a couple of well-kept real ales, Landlord and Tetley, at eyebrow-raising prices of just £2.75 and £2.60 per pint. Back towards town, the Enterprise-owned Elephant & Castle almost opposite the station retains a beautiful Grade II listed ceramic tiled exterior, but had its original heart ripped out a number of years back “fantastic and modern” but not appealing to our party. There’s a clutch of other pubs visible from Westgate but with later opening times, so we stuck to the main drag, dropping in on the Black Horse which had only reopened a week earlier after a major refurb. It has a modern feel, extra seating and an extended bar area, but has remained faithful to local cask ales such as Bradgate, Black Sheep and Timothy Taylor. Across

the road the Establishment showed promise but had not opened when we called, so on to Amber Inns’ Hogarths open plan Victorian pub, open from 11am and now branding itself as a gin palace with plenty of options in that department and a couple of hand pulled beers in the shape of Tetley and Bombardier. Moving along to the town centre, Alfred Moodies looked interesting but was only 5.6% Rest Day from the Outgang Brewery. If you’re happy to drink keg beer, they do offer John Smiths at just £1.90 between Monday and Wednesday. The rear exit leads to Bread Street Ale House, next door and the Black Rock Hotel to the left. The former opens at 9am and also provides cut priced beer such as Naylor’s Brew 1641 at just £2, John Smiths Cask and Old Rosie is a rare example of a traditional wet-led hotel right in the heart of the city, and although a little tired, still provides well kept beers such as Tetley, Oakham Citra and three guests from Ossett, Titanic and Blue Bee. The reputation clearly goes back a long time as it’s enjoyed a Good

Beer Guide listing since the book’s inception back in 1974. Back onto Westgate, and right to the end where the street meets Kirkgate (home to Six Chimneys marks the end of the Westgate Run. This branch of JD Wetherspoon enjoys mixed reviews ranging from “a great pub” to “the worst JDW the obvious conclusion is that it’s a building with no chimneys at all, though a chat with regular away on a ciggie by the entrance, revealed that the original building had been demolished long ago. On closer examination its detractors have been rather harsh, as the ambience was pleasant, beers were on good form (including Old Peculier for seasonal food special of Haggis, complete with neeps and tatties was a steal at just £2.49. The former Wakey’s bar next door had closed down, so we made our way to the Calder & Hops with four real ales from the Marston’s stable, and a couple of hire with individual screens for sporting events, and a set of wall mounted wings for photographic

purposes. Across the road is the Jolly Tap, formerly a newsagent’s, now a micropub complete with piano, opened in 2017 and the tap for Barnsley’s Jolly Boys Brewery. Two house beers were available along with two from Double Top and one from Scarborough Brewery. Tucked away on Avison yard, just off Kirkgate is an old favourite – the Fernandes Brewery Tap & Bier Keller (open from 11.30am, 4pm Monday-Wednesday), now owned by Ossett Brewery. The upstairs bar features wooden signs, wooden casks and other breweriana. This is an agreeable

spot with good beer including Ossett plus guests, ciders and continental beers in the adjacent bier keller. Onto George Street and back in the direction of the station, the Polka Hop Morris dancing step, this friendly place was opened in September 2018 by John Earnshaw and features regular live music, including folk every Tuesday, real changing beers (from Sunbeam,

Crochet & Knit night. Along Smyth Street, past Warehouse 23 where a trio of punk rockers were waiting for the night’s entertainment to begin, to the right on Bank Street, Ossett Brewery’s the Hop is open from 4pm and features nine handpulls with excellent beers from their own stable and guests from Rat, Bingley, Saltaire, Ilkley, as it was to stay, Harry’s Bar (open at 4pm) across the car park in an alleyway off Westgate is a must-visit pub with another impressive array of pumps from

43 when we visited). The walls Art Gallery and there’s a weekly

Empire and Oakham. As if that’s not enough the Old Print Works next door features 6 rotating beers from the likes of Moorhouses, Castlerock, Exit 33, Oakham and Rat breweries. Unfortunately these great pubs had to be crammed in at the end of a long day, as we still wanted to try the Marston’s Inns of Court on King Street, the Priory on Back Lane, and the Labour Club (Red Shed) but train time had arrived and the station is easily accessed through an archway alongside the Old Print Works and back across Westgate.
