Brewer Samuel Smith has introduced a new policy banning the use of mobile phones and tablets inside of its pubs in order to encourage “social conversation person to person.” This is in addition to the no music, no TVs and no swearing policies already in place. The move affects the Botolph Arms and the Wortley Almshouses in Peterborough, St Mary’s Vaults and Melbourn Bros in Stamford and the Olde White Horse in Spalding. Peterborough micropubs the Frothblowers, Wonky Donkey and Bumble Inn have joined forces to stage Micro Fest 2019 (10-12 May) which offers 50 beers and a vintage bus linking the three pubs on the Saturday and Sunday. The Frothblowers is also hosting a ‘Focal Local’ beer festival to coincide with the Werrington Carnival (21-23 June). Still in Werrington, the Ploughman has been put on the market by owner Andy Simmonds. The pub was the venue for the annual Peterborough Breweriana Fair. This year’s Peterborough Beer Festival (20-24 August) plays host to Siba (Society of Independent Brewers) Champion Beer of the Midlands Area Competition. The judging takes place before the event opens but all the 180 beers will be available to visitors in addition to the festival beers, with the winner being announced on the Main Stage at 5pm. including Oakham Ales, renamed Charlie’s AYC (the AYC referring to “Adult Youth Club”) and run by Marija Obradovic and Paul Richards. The pub is open Wednesday-Sunday, and all day Friday-Sunday. Having relocated successfully from Wisbech to Woodston last year, the Mile Tree Brewery is staging an open day at its premises at 29 Alfric Square PE2 7JP on Sunday 9 June, where its range of beers will be available for tasting and purchase. The Packhorse at Northborough reopened in early March under former manager Liam Oliver. Meri Hyde, former licensee at now demolished Heron in Stanground, took over the reins at the nearby Woolpack in Stanground on 1 March, and by all accounts is doing a brisk trade. The pub is open all day, with four real ales including Landlord, Black Sheep and two changing guest ales. The pub and riverside garden have been refreshed and a new kitchen
is being installed. We wish her well after the trauma of losing the popular local. The Stilton Cheese at Stilton was closed when we delivered the last issue in late February. The property has been sold, though a sign on the door of the pub suggested that it would be reopening. The sale of the Jolly Brewer in Stamford appears to have fallen through. So, Dean and Jill will be in situ for the foreseeable future. Carole Frith has announced that she will be leaving the Golden Fleece after four years, coinciding with the Potential tenants are asked to contact the brewery on 0116 201 4260. Liam Kavanagh and Rob Savill who currently run the Copper Room in St Mary’s Hill, Stamford, have taken over at the Exeter Arms, Easton on the Hill. They plan to extend the beer range to include more craft ales and extend the choice of wines and spirits – a beer festival and outdoor gin bar are also on

The Holbeach Music and Beer Festival year on 2-4 August with camping and a variety of bands including Zeb Rootz, The Jam’d, Wild Boys (80s covers), Revival (90s) and a Take That tribute act. An added attraction this year is a car show. Spalding’s Welland Brewery has announced a new brew – Fen Tiger (4%) is now available, and a brewery takeover night is planned for the Mermaid involved with the Spalding Festival, returning to the Castle Sports Complex for a fourth year between 24-26 May. The brewery will be supplying a festival special to supplement the 90+ ales and 15 ciders. An outdoor stage will feature a number of bands – details at www.spaldingfestival.co.uk The Chequered Skipper at Ashton, near Oundle closed suddenly in March, though the tenancy has been taken over by a local builder who hopes to have the pub open again soon. It is thought the same individual has also bought the lease of the Cross Keys at Kings Cliffe, which is also expected to reopen after extensive refurbishment. Various parties have shown an interest in the Kings Head at Wadenhoe, though another Kings Head, at Apethorpe, is still closed despite extensive interior rebuilding. General opinion was not in favour of a beer trip to the idea – “There’s nothing there” seemed to be the general opinion. We like to give everywhere a fair crack of the whip so it was decided to play safe, and that the pleasant neighbouring town of St Ives could be easily added by way of a regular bus route via village of Hartford, home of the renowned King of The Belgians pub. It’s only 17 minutes by train from Peterborough, so an offpeak adult return fare comes in at just £6.60 (returning any time). Exiting the station left, across the car park, and then right, Brampton Road soon
morphs into George Street as you head towards town. Just on the left, there’s a striking JD Wetherspoon opened in 2016, created from two imposing structures – one a former chapel, the other a Grade II listed former theatre (later a Post
this historic town. Manager Andy Sweet was please to give us a brief history. Old photos show the chapel once had a tower, and there’s still a lovely balcony overlooking the diners and drinkers below. The chain’s annual spring beer and cider

place was busy just after 11am. On a normal day there are three standard beers (from £1.89) and three changing guests. Further along George Street stands the George Hotel, a lovely old coaching inn dating
day. Having stood derelict for 10 years, the site now provides a welcoming introduction to
retaining an impressive galleried courtyard. Now a 26 roomed ‘Old English Inn’ (Greene King), the property was once home to
Oliver Cromwell’s grandfather and also curiously an operating base for Charles I. The IPA and Abbot were on good form and reasonable priced at £3.39 and £3.64 respectively. Turning right onto Market Hill, you’ll see the award winning 16th century Falcon on the right hand side – another place steeped in history as this was reputedly a recruiting station for Oliver Cromwell. It fell upon hard times as a pub more recently and stood empty for six years, before reopening as the town’s main outlet for real ale. Up to 18 beers and ciders can be available from Hobgoblin, Potbelly and many guest breweries, some from Northamptonshire (sister pubs are in Wellingborough, Kettering and Northampton), and their own Julian Church Brewery, all keenly priced between £1.99 and £3.30. Beer festivals are held in April, June September and December. Just across the square behind Barclays is the Market Inn – a welcoming local’s pub, open all day with a single real ale (a tasty Robinson Trooper) and a real cider usually available. No food is served but there’s a pool table and dart board. Along the High Street, the
The Market Inn, Huntingdon
open plan Cromwells appeared to be geared more towards the younger late evening drinker (it’s open to 2am) – two Marston’s ales were available but neither were drinkable. Moving on quickly, the Three Tuns offered no real beer, so we popped into the Samuel Pepys – named after another local celebrity from Britain’s distant past who attended Huntingdon Grammar School. Again, open all day, the beer was better here with Adnams, Butcombe plus the inevitable Doom Bar and a Pepys Pint from Marston’s. Food is served lunchtimes and evenings. We rounded off the Huntingdon leg at the Old Bridge Hotel, an impressive 18th century building situated beside the River Ouse and now it seems, surrounded my main roads. It’s a quality establishment with impressive wine list, but usually has three local-ish brews on – two from Nene Valley Brewery and one from Adnams, and we were made to feel very much at home by friendly bar staff Hazel and Lewis. There a bus every 15 minutes to St Ives from the nearby bus station for the 30-minute but we took Lewis’s advice and walked the mile or so via the
Riverside and Hartford Road to the King of the Belgians for our chosen lunch stop. This 16th century village inn has won numerous awards (including Cambridgeshire Pub of the Year three times) under the loving stewardship of Jane and Matt Spicer who rescued the pub from near oblivion some years ago. Four ever-changing well-kept ales are supplemented with seven ciders, there’s food lunchtimes and evenings, regular live entertainment and quizzes, and beer festivals in May (24-27 this year) and August. Just up the road alongside the bus stop is the Barleymow, pleasant and popular with diners, but for us not a patch on its illustrious neighbour, it provides three regular national brand ales. Catching the bus for the 15-minute ride from here to the pleasant riverside town of St Ives, we chose to alight at Ramsey Road, for the Grade II listed Slepe Hall Hotel, Slepe being the original name of the town of St Ives. This impressive 19th century hotel boasts 16 rooms and is popular for functions, but we were given a friendly reception from barmaid, Kirsten who did her best to give us some background history. Two
King of the Belgians, Hartford
contrasting beers, Oakham Citra and Magpie Raven were tasted, before we sped on to Floods, a traditional Elgood’s house with Cambridge Bitter and Golden Newt on hand pump. With time ticking it became obvious that we might not get all of the key pubs in on this visit, but we were determined to get to the Nelson’s Head – a Greene King pub with guest beers from Nene Valley Brewery (prices
Royal Oak, St Ives
from £2.90), and down to the former river port area, which was presumably once home to a number of busy watering holes – it’s reputed that the town once had a pub for every 69 inhabitants. The last remaining pub on this stretch is currently the town’s best for beer choice. The Oliver Cromwell stands to the left of the famous bridge (one of just four left in the UK to incorporate a chapel) and
has been popular free house for many years. There’s always a brew from Adnams and Oakham, plus four guests from the likes of Hop Back or Humpty Dumpty, a couple of real ciders and a range of bottled Belgian beers. There’s community feel to the pub, regular live entertainment and a couple of beer festivals each year. Imagine our shock then, when it was revealed that the pub has been sold to pubco Charles Wells– we’ll reserve judgement until we return. With that, we just had time to get to the Royal Oak on Crown Street, forsaking on this occasion the White Hart and the local JD Wetherspoon – the Swan & Angel. The Royal Oak is a busy town centre pub, rebuilt in the 19th century but retaining many features, and a decent range of beers, usually from local breweries such as Oakham Ales, Newby Wyke or Greene King. There’s live music at weekends and a friendly landlord who, after brief deliberation among the R&B team as to whether to risk the bus, kindly pointed our weary party in the direction of the taxi rank opposite where we arranged a 15-minute ride back to Huntingdon station.
