The Secret Stable Market Deeping’s Iron Horse Ranch House has seen some exciting developments recently. Opened eight years ago by Richard Swinscoe as an Americana/Biker themed pub/ diner, the venue is now staking a serious claim to the Deepings’ premier entertainment venue. On retirement, Richard has handed the reins to his daughter, Verity, with front of house duties managed by Rachel King, who talked us through the improvements. the original theme remains, but out back there are now two outdoor stages housed in an enormous rigid marquee, dubbed “the secret stable”. The capacity has grown to 500 standing guests (or 150 seated) with an outdoor Tiki bar offering a range of beers and wines along with the cocktails and spirits. As well as live music every weekend, into open mic nights, a monthly comedy club, pop-up markets and even a drag quiz night. The weekly bike nights continue in a separate marquee, and there’s now a riverside dining terrace.

Rachel King

The pub opens for breakfasts at 10am during the week and 9.30am at weekends. Food is available all day, and there’s a range of craft/keg beers, though currently no regular cask. Bands perform every Friday and Saturday night with afternoon entertainment on Sundays commencing at 3pm – see details in our listings section. A charity beer festival celebrating Richard’s retirement to the coast is to be

held on the weekend of 15-17 October at which there will be a wide range of cask ales and real ciders, along with live bands each day, kicking off with the Expletives on the Friday. If you haven’t visited yet, the Iron Horse can be found the High Street, Market Deeping, adjacent to the Market Place. See ironhorseranchhouse. co.uk for further information. Chris Shilling

The Fat Cat 49 West End Street Norwich Norfolk NR2 4NA 01603 624364 fatcatpub.co.uk No visit to Norfolk’s county town should go without a visit to the Fat Cat – arguably the UK’s best known real ale pub. It’s not exactly handy for the station, so unless you’re planning a pub crawl through the city, it’s best to jump in a taxi. I had an hour to spare, so did just that, and was lucky enough to catch charismatic owner Colin Keatley on a quiet day.

Now a youthful 71, Colin’s enjoyed a lifetime in the pub trade, starting at his dad’s pub in London – The Roundhouse – in 1971. He then took the Savoy Tavern (which is still there) becoming London’s youngest landlord, then moving to Norwich, taking on a couple of pubs before buying the 19th century former Steward & Patteson New Inn from Courage and renaming it the Fat Cat. The range of expertly kept real ales available in the pub grew to an incredible 35, and established the Fat Cat as a national mecca for lovers of good beer and a traditional pub atmosphere. Indeed, Camra awarded the pub its ultimate accolade – National

Pub of the Year – twice (in 1998 and 2004) along with countless regional awards, and most recently, a gold plaque – unique for the county of Norfolk. The successful formula was then employed elsewhere – former Spring Tavern was purchased in 1996, and is still run by Colin’s brother. In 2003, the former Wherryman in Lawson Road, Norwich was purchased and renamed the Fat Cat Tap, incorporating its own brewery, then further outlets in Thorpe Road, Norwich (Fat Cat & Canary), Colchester and latterly the nearby Perseverance which he renamed the Fat Percy, and has recently morphed from a

craft beer venue.

Leicestershire’s second largest town is perhaps best known for its university, but is also home to the world’s largest bell foundry, and the famous Brush ‘Falcon’ works where 150 years of railway engineering is about to end this later year when the rail refurbishment unit closes. The iconic Brush logo dominates the view from the platform as you arrive at the station, after an 80 to 90-minute train journey (changing at Leicester). Fares with railcards come in at around £20 from Peterborough, but this can be done cheaper from Stamford or Grantham.

Immediately post-Covid, opening times and beer ranges are perhaps a little tighter than would usually be expected, so an 11am arrival time is currently not ideal for the pubs nearest the station. It’s a 10-minute walk into town, past the Tap & Mallet, recently closed due to the ill health of the owner, but there are three midday opening pubs in close proximity. The Windmill on Sparrow Hill is the town’s oldest pub dating from 1650 and still boasts small individual rooms, with three cask ales – Pedigree and Draught Bass (still a strong seller here)

plus a guest beer – a tasty Moa New Zealand Pale Ale from Shiny Brewery when we called. Friendly landlord Luke formerly had the Organ Grinder pub in the town, and has stripped out the carpets (much to the dismay of some regulars) to expose the are available during the week, along with roasts on Sundays, and there’s a sizeable garden. On Churchgate, the Three Nuns in a foody but traditional Everards house with the usual Everards’ brands plus a guest beer from Castle Rock. The pub was busy with diners already and

A warm welcome at the Moonface Brewery Tap & Bar.

(do Loughborough students really care?) – The Tap & Clapper (formerly the Black Lion) looked promising from the outside, but could only offer Pedigree and the Bell Foundry is a sports bar with Doom Bar on tap. On to Market Street, the Cask Bah would surely offer salvation? No, temporarily closed due to Covid. The is a Marston’s owned burger joint with Ringwood Razorback as a guest ale, and the Crafty Fox was given short shrift due to its ale. At least the town’s other Wetherspoons – the Grade II listed Moon & Bell on Ward’s End – was an improvement on its sister pub. Our party enjoyed JHB and Citra from Oakham Ales as well as Kelham Island’s Pale Rider for just £1.99 a pint. A little further on the Jam Garden was offering Doom Bar as it’s sole ale and the Blacksmiths opposite looked like it had closed down. On to Woodgate, the Wheeltapper Cask & Tap House opens from 4pm, housed in a modern building but with a focus on mainly small breweries across

the UK at prices below £4, plus real ciders and a range of craft keg beers. Still on Woodgate, the Organ Grinder (formerly the Packhorse) is a familiar name, with outlets in Nottingham and Newark, and didn’t disappoint. Up to eight Blue Monkey beers are available along with a range of real ciders (the pub was awarded 2019 Pub of the Year by the local Camra branch), there’s a “Stable Bar” out the back and “Hayloft” function area upstairs. We were keen to take a look at the bar on the Great Central Railway station – the UK’s sole preserved main line railway, so we by-passed the Phantom (Doom Bar only) and the Royal Oak (Pedigree only) on London Road to reach the GCR Refreshment Room just as a steam hauled train pulled in. All very interesting, but sadly the bar had already closed so we could only view the sole handpump through the window. Keen to end on a high we retraced our steps to Moira Street to pay a visit to the Moonface Brewery & Tap Bar. Opened two years ago, this unassuming building, originally a photo studio, offers a delightful,

quirky cobbled outdoor drinking area with beer casks for seating. Two house beers were available (Mr B’s and No 1) along with guests from Leatherbritches and Blue Bee (and no keg beer). The beers were on top form lovingly cared for by business partners Lisa and Pete whose friendly and enthusiastic nature presumably contributed to the pub gaining the local Camra Pub of the Year award for both 2020 and 2021. The bar opens at 4pm during the week and 2pm at weekends, and usually remains open until 9pm canal, that offers a short route back to the main line station. Chris Shilling

Morton title, If You Knew performed by Crozier and Smith joined by ‘Magic’ Mike Henry on trumpet, Jim Swinnerton on string bass and Sarah on clarinet and tenor sax. As the title suggests, there will be more great jazz collaborations to come. Meanwhile you can enjoy a wide selection of the videos on Sarah’s YouTube channel: youtube.com/sarahtsax Run For Cover By Stefan Taylor & the Signatures, CD, Static Wax SWR004

The pandemic has produced some amazingly resourceful artistic presentations as found here with some hot recordings made by internationally renowned musicians from Europe and the US. These collaborations were initially made as videos making their individual track for a tune usually using their mobile phone and then sending them to Sarah Spencer in the UK for her to compile using each title as one take in as live a fashion as is possible. The results are a splendid set of recordings with a varied set of songs and tunes which, if you didn’t know better, you could consider that the musicians were together in a venue or studio nodding to each other when it was their tune to take a solo. With ten musicians taking part there are group presentations big and small, ranging from a duo on Jelly Roll Morton’s Kansas City Stomps with Hugh Crozier (who co-arranged all the tracks with Sarah), on piano and US drummer Hal Smith. Do you like soul music? Sweet soul music? Well, the great news is that a new generation of musicians and fans are loving the sort of soul so many grew up with in the 1960s onwards. The sound of soul promoted on the likes of the Atlantic, Stax and Motown labels was so popular in Europe that the original American performers found a ready audience for their music over here. There was also the Northern Soul movement with individual dance moves crafted to some rare soul records.

Stefan Taylor & the Signatures

If you want to hear some up-to-date soul try this ten-track CD from Stefan Taylor & the Signatures. Taylor, 27, is not from Chicago or Detroit, but Leicester and listened to the music played by his DJ dad. To play soul music properly you need a real band with a tight rhythm section, the right keyboard sound, a compact, punchy brass team and backing vocals – which is what the Signatures represent. They’ve now and can be heard to great effect on ten tracks including James Brown’s There Was a Time and Oscar Brown Junior’s ever popular The Snake. If the 35-minutes of studio sounds makes you long to experience the band live – and it should – then they have a string of performances coming up including Oakdene Forest Park Soul Weekender (25 September); Skamouth Festival, Great Yarmouth (1 October), Cambridge Soul Festival (12 November) and Madness House of Fun Weekender, Minehead (20 November).
