er t r a t s Ramadan pack Ramadan is the month in which was sent down the Quran, as the guide to mankind, (bearing) clear signs and the criterion (to distinguish right from wrong). So whoever witnesses this month, should fast but if anyone is ill, or on a journey, the prescribed period should be made up for later. Allah intends for your ease, not hardship and wants you to complete the prescribed period, and to glorify Him in that He has guided you and perchance you shall be grateful.

Sawm what it really means

GETTING READY FOR THE MONTH OF PIETY (TAQWA)

O you who believe! Fasting has been made obligatory upon you just as it was made obligatory upon those who were before you, so that you may have Taqwa

The Importance

The month of first revelation of the Quran. Also the month when the Quran was sent from the 7th to the 1st heaven.

Protection from

hubb-ul-dunia

Literally

To abstain from certain actions for a specific goal.

Etymologically

A few days before battle, horses were abstained from their regular diet to prepare them for the battle. These horses were called Sa’im (One who observes Sawm)

Pillars of An Niyyah (The Intention)

Resolve to carry out Allah’s command. Must be made the night before (before fajr)

Al Imsak (The Refraining)

Refraining from what breaks the fast.

Az Zaman (The Time) From Fajr(first crack of the dawn) till sunset (maghrib)

The Purpose

To gain taqwa: an emotion which develops in a person (abd) due to one to one relationship with Allah (the ilaah) that makes him not to transgress His limilts. It is the strongest driving force and can overcome every corporal instinct.

Path to

Islamically

To abstain from eating, drinking and sexual intercourse, with the intention of worshiping (Allah) from the first crack of dawn (Fajr) until the setting of the sun (Maghrib)

Just like Allah made sawm obligatory: “kutiba alaikum ul siyam” (decreed upon you is fasting) he also made these obligatory: “kutiba alaikum ul qital” [2:216] (decreed upon you is fighting) ”kutiba alaikum ul qisas” [2:178] (decreed upon you is legal retribution)

Sawm protects your heart from the love of dunia while purifying it using the Quran, hence making you ready for the challenges that will come on the path of Islam. It strengthens the belief that right and wrong is defined solely by Allah and we need to obey him even if our desires and intellect tell otherwise.

Nullifiers of sawm

• Eating, drinking or having sexual intercourse (also if one is forced to do so) • Fluid reaching inside of the body by any means (nose, eye, ear, injection, exaggerated rinsing, inhaling and exhaling water) • Deliberate excretion of semen due to staring (at something or someone that incites the lusts) or prolonged thinking (about sexual desires) or kissing or touching. • Intentional vomiting.

After sawm was made obligatory, the most remarkable event happened at Badr when the forces of Truth clashed with Falsehood for the first time and emerged victorious

Rayyan There is a gate in Paradise called Ar-Rayyan reserved for the people who observed fasting on the Day of Resurrection. None will enter it other than them. After they have entered, it will be closed and no one will enter it (after them)” [Bukhari and Muslim]

Disliked (makrooh) actions

• Exaggerating in gargling and inhaling water into the nostrils during ablution. • Kissing, lustfully staring at the spouse, thinking about having sex, lustful touching or rubbing the body against. • Rinsing the mouth other than Wudhu’ or without a need to do so. • Applying kohl (to the eyes) at the beginning of the day, but there is no problem with doing so at the end of the day. • Hijamah (cupping) or blood letting (by opening a vein). • Using foul language.

Quran 3:123

And already had Allah given you victory at [the battle of] Badr while you were few in number. Then fear Allah ; perhaps you will be grateful. [Also Read Surah Ale-Imran: 13, 121-127, 173, 174; Surah Al-Anfal: 7-12, 17,1-19, 42-44, 67, 71] “How many a small company has overcome a large company by permission of Allah . And Allah is with the patient.” [2:249]

“Fasting and the Qur’an will intercede for a person on the Day of Resurrection. Fasting will say: O Lord, I kept him from his food and desires during the day; let me intercede for him. And the Qur’an will say: I kept him from sleeping during the night; let me intercede for him. And they will be allowed to intercede.” [Ahmad]

Numerous Ahadith relate Fast ing & Quran

Allah alone is the Creator, Sustainer and Sovereign of all beings – everyone else is Allah’s slave. Allah alone is worthy of worship and obedience. Do not blindly follow any person, ideology or desire. Each person will one day return to Allah to account for one’s performance in the present phase of life. MuhammadSAW is the messenger of Allah and the perfect example to follow. Quran is the Word of Allah and a guidance for entire mankind.

Core Message of the Quran

Ramadan is introduced by Allah as the month in which the Quran was revealed. (Surah Baqarah:185)

That’s how Allah introduces the month The right tilawah of Quran is allowing what it makes lawful, prohibiting what it makes unlawful, reciting it as it was revealed by Allah, not changing the words from their places, and not interpreting it with other than its actual interpretation.

Abandoning the Quran

Uthman bin Affan recited whole quran every night in qyam. Some of them would complete the recitation every three days, some seven days and some every ten days.

Imam Shafi’ used to recite the Quran 60 times in the whole month.

The companions’ relationship with Quran

The Early Muslims continued this sunnah

The Prophet said: “Recite the Qur’an, for on the Day of Resurrection, it shall come as an intercessor for its companion.” [Muslim] He also said: “The Quran is evidence for you or against you.” [Muslim]

The Prophet’s Complaint!

Quran 25:30 And the Messenger (will) say: “O My Lord, indeed my people took this Quran as something worthy of being abandoned.”

Types of Mahjura (abandonment) 1. To abandon listening to it and believing in it. 2. To abandon acting upon it, and ignoring its lawful and prohibited ordinances (halal and haram), even if one believes and recites it. 3. To abandon judging by it, and resorting to it as a judge when there are differences in the essence of the religion. 4. To abandon pondering over it, and understanding it, and seeking the explanation of it. 5. To abandon using it as a cure in all types of diseases of the heart, and instead to seek to cure these diseases by other means.

1. Believe in the Quran as the ultimate source of guidance. 2. Listen to it with sincerity. 3. Recite with proper tajweed (tarteel). 4. Memorize it as much as possible. 5. Understand and reflect upon it. 6. Act upon its teachings. 7. Call people towards the Quran.

Action Plan Complete the Quran in 30 days • Read 4 pages of the Qur’an after every Salah. • Make sure you understand it through any translation of your choice. • 5 prayers X 4 pages = 20 pages • 20 pages = about 1 juz • 1 juz X 30 days = the entire Quran

Add-on

Every night before going to bed, make short notes of what you read that day and how you plan to apply it in your life.

ACTION PLAN

Gear ing Up!

The Mid-Ramadan Slump!!

Ramadan is filled with abundant chances to gain rewards as well as make positive changes. Since there is so much at stake, it’s best to start building momentum a few days prior to the blessed month. Here’s how you can recharge your imaan... A sincere intention and an honest dua Make a sincere intention to work on your imaan, and as you go along, remember to renew that intention regularly. Also make dua, asking Allah to assist in this. Acknowledge your own weakness – i.e. that you alone cannot succeed in this, and that you are dependent on His Mercy and help.

Get rid of distractions

Looming deadlines at work/college, family issues, personal goals, and to top it all, a plethora of stuff going on social media. All the perfect ingredients to drive you off track. Get rid of things which are not extremely necessary and will act as distractions. Prioritize work, and if possible try and finish much of it before Ramadan, so you have a little bit of time for yourself.

Cut down on sins

While imaan can be boosted by doing good actions, it’s equally important to stop doing the bad ones that hamper our imaan. Sins drain the barakah from our life, slowly or quickly, whether we notice it or not. So, when we’re feeling low in terms of imaan, look at what our sins or bad habits are, then try to reduce or eliminate them.

Prioritize salah

Salah is the most essential part of our deen. Try to offer them on time (in the masjid), work on khushu (concentration) and make sure to be steadfast in the sunnah prayers.

Being Productive

Ramadan is not an excuse for staying lazy , or for sleeping the whole day. It’s for realizing the fact that no matter how tough it is, we need to balance both dunia and aakhirah. Here are a few tips: • Plan your day each day of Ramadan, the night before. • Never EVER miss Suhoor. Wake up at least an hour before Fajr, read Quran and have a filling and balanced meal. • Get an afternoon nap (not more than 20 minutes) either before or after Dhuhur. • Plan your Ramadan days (and life) around Salah times, not the other way round. • Block at least one-hour for reciting Quran each day. • Break your fast with dates and milk or dates and water; go pray Maghrib, then come back for a LIGHT meal. • Give lots of ‘Physical Sadaqah’; get involved in organizing community iftars, charity drives, helping orphans etc. Earn reward working for others. • Don’t miss an opportunity for Dawah. When someone asks you about the fast, give them a beautiful explanation of Ramadan and Islam.

Laylat

al-Qadr

The Night of Decree

When? It falls in one of the last 10 nights of Ramadan. [Bukhari, Muslim] Allah concealed it from His Servants out of mercy so that they increase their acts of worship and gain great reward by performing Qiyam (standing for prayer) hence gaining the reward of each night.

It is highly possible for us to feel tired and drained out mid-way in Ramadan. In the midst of tiredness and lack of energy, it might happen that we get tangled with preparing iftaar and saving our energy , that we may lose sight of our actual goal. Remember: Fasting is to gain taqwa With time, our acts of ibadah may become mere rituals. We need to remind ourselves that: fasting is prescribed so that we may gain taqwa [Quran 2:183]. So we need to be more conscious of Allah and not be conscious of the clock ticking for iftaar!

It’s about quality, not quantity

Often, we tend to plan things way beyond our capabilities and hence compromise on the quality of ibadah. Remember, a short taraweeh with tafseer, coupled with fajr in congregation is way better than a taraweeh after which we miss fajr.

You will stumble

You might fall. But don’t ever stop trying. If you slip up one day and feel like your fast has been empty, void of all consciousness of what you were doing and why, don’t use that as the go-ahead for the rest of your month to follow in that way. Use it as a turning point and a reminder of what you should be working for.

Remember the reward

Your hunger means nothing when it is mindless and unconscious of Allah. You need to continuously remind yourself of your reward with Allah. Think about Jannah – what will it look like? Who do you want your neighbors to be? What kind of fruit will grow on your trees? Read about Jannah, what kinds of rewards Allah promises; try to picture it. Make your goal real!

Post Ramadan-The Real Battle! We often feel relaxed after Ramadan, not realizing that the holy month was just a training period. The real battle is about to begin. It’s easy to lose focus and spoil all the good that we acquired. Here’s what you should be doing: • Don’t make eid a rogue food-festival or movie-day. Spend time with family and friends. Catch-up with relatives. Discuss how Ramadan has modified you into a better person. Give gifts to your loved-ones. • Don’t let your sins come back after Ramadan. Keep them buried for good. • Introspect. Ramadan gives you enough insight to identify your shortcomings. Keep working on them. • You must have changed a lot throughout this month. Identify the transformed you and maintain this new Islamic identity. • Keep reading the Quran daily to gain perspective in life and purify your intentions. • Keep recharging your taqwa through regular nafil and sunnah fasts. Remember to fast the 6 days of Shawwal after Eid-ul-Fitr. • Control being attracted too much to the world and think more often about the akhirah.

Some Facts Allah revealed a chapter about this: Surah Al-Qadr (97) The Quran was sent down on this night. [Quran 97:1] Praying in Laylat al-Qadr is better than praying a thousand months. [Quran 97:3] Angels come down to the earth with goodness, blessing, and mercy for the believers. [Quran 97:4-5] The affairs of that year are dispatched from the Preserved Tablet to the angels who record the decrees.[Quran 44:4] Sins are forgiven, gates of goodness are opened, rewards are multiplied, and matters are facilitated. With the start of the last ten days of Ramadan, the Prophet used to tighten his waist belt (i.e. work hard) and used to perform Salah all the night, and used to keep his family awake for Salah.[Bukhari, Muslim]

I’tikaf

(the forgotten sunnah) The Prophet used to practice I`tikaf in the last ten days of Ramadan till he died... [Bukhari] So, he secluded from people during those ten days, engaging himself in obeying Allah, mentioning Him, forgetting everything that might distract him, and focusing on pleasing Allah by worship. I’tikaf can be done even on other days.
