On their new album "Repetitions" How did the band form Dunk: The band formed some 1 0 years ago in a similar way to how most bands form. in example a bunch of friends just making music together. Over time a more structured form of songwriting developed and gigs and recordings followed. Rich: I'm a later addition to the band. Although Dunk and I have been friends more many years, I've only been in the band for the last couple of years. I was drafted in to help tour "The Fallen Host"... Then never left! How was the recording of "Repetitions"? Rich: Liberating, really. We wanted to make the follow up to "The Fallen Host" more organic, more reflective, less digital... And more the sound of a band in a room playing together. All of those
aims make for a more fulfilling experience. It's much more sociable and spontaneous an experience. Dunk: Yeah, It was an enjoyable experience. We decided to work in a different environment with a different producer as I felt that these songs needed more depth, more warmth. I knew Mat Sampson after working with him many years ago and knew that it was the perfect place to record "Repetitions". We had a vast array of vintage recording equipment to play with which helped the recording both on an enjoyment aspect but also on a sonic level too.
more of a certain feeling....with "Scars of the Midwest", the overall snse was one of isolation and desperation, "The Fallen Host" was filled with far more anger and bitterness. With "Repetitions", the sense that I wanted to get across was one of acceptance. almost an enjoyment of feeling pain. similar to the feeling of being on morphone perhaps. The main difference is the fele of the songs, but sonically they've been recorded in a totally different way. Instead of opting to add in lots of effects after the recording has been done, everything has been done in real time, so that everything you hear is a What's the concept behind the album performance as such. It's a more dense and how does it differ from previous and deep album than the other two and releases?? I'd say its the most personal of the Dunk: I'd say theres no actual three. CONCEPT as such with this album... It's
If your music were to be adapted to film, what story would it tell? Rich: I'm not sure, but I like to think that the film would be a cross between "The Wicker Man", "It's a Wonderful Life" and "The Fog". Kind of a Christmas road movie with some horror pirates thrown in for good measure. Dunk: Hah! ....hmmm... Good question. So far it's not the happiest of stories! It's certainly a dark film, one featuring themes such as loss, resentment, guilt and bitterness. It'd be a hard going movie, but a rewarding experience once you got through it. Maybe if there is a fourth album from Blueneck we'll get a happy hollywood style ending to the film... You never know, but don't count on it!
What are your favorite albums at the moment? Rich: There's just 3 albums on endless rotation for me at the moment: My Bloody Valentine's "Loveless", Jon Hopkins' "Insides" and R.E.M's "Mumur". Dunk: I've not fallen in love with anything all that new recently, but albums that I've been listening to a lot recently are Why? "Eskimo Snow", Cult of Luna "Somewhere Along The Highway", Sufjan Stevens "Seven Swans", Radiohead "Kid A", The National "Boxer", Arcade Fire "Neon Bible". These are probably the albums I listened to most whilst on tour... They got me through some very long days! Would you like to come to Portugal? Rich: Of course! Who doesn't? We're currently planning our tours for next year and Portugal is definitely on the wish list. Design & Interview: Rick Words: Duncan & Rich Photo courtesy of Creative Eclipse PR
