Killington Fall

On how recording in a 12th Century abbey kept them focused... How did the band form?

Some of us went to school together. Some of us were friends of friends. Some of us were the others science experiment. But at the end of the day we all played instruments and fancied playing in a band together!

How was it recording "Keep Your Eyes To The Sea"? Recording Keep Your Eyes was an amazing experience. We recorded it in a 1 2th century abbey in Northern France, with our good friend Chris Hamilton of Eek! Recordings. We spent 1 0 days out in the middle of nowhere recording this EP. It was a really liberating experience being able to work on these songs 24 hours a day and have no distractions from the internet or TV. It was pretty isolated and amazing!

What was the concept behind it?

There was no huge concept behind this record. The only song where we actually took full blown inspiration from something was the track "Stable Waves". This was inspired by the cover art to the EP. Our friend George Sydney designed all the art for the EP and the photo on the front was one he took in Aberdeen. After seeing this picture we knew what we wanted that track to sound like. We also had a good idea for what we wanted 'Eventide, The Dark' to sound like when we started writing it as well. "Ghost Rockets" & "Two Surrendered Flags" on the other hand literally came from jamming around with no set idea.

How does it differ from "At The Soundless Dawn"?

With "Keep Your Eyes...." we were able to spend a lot more time writing and getting everything prepared. With ATSD we were still writing a lot of it in our studio time. So it was nice to go and record with fully formed ideas this time. It gave us a lot more time to mess around with sounds and textures. Our old guitarist Mark also left inbetween the two EP's and Max now plays guitar. So it was fun figuring out Max's playing & writing style and and how it would sit in amongst ours!
