LIVING JUST ENOUGH DESIGN STUDIO VI PROFESSOR PETER MACAPIA LOCATION: QUEENSBRIDGE PARK JUSTICE IN EDUCATION -

New York currently has the most segregated school system in the United States, specifically for African American and Hispanic students. The landmark 1954 Supreme Court Decision - Brown vs. Board of Education declares school-based racial segregation to be unconstitutional and intended to desegregate schools. However, the schools did not reflect this Court ruling. It was generating the start of a conflict in justice that is still affecting students today. This project is designed for the students and families, giving them access to learn and advocate their educational rights in New York City. It will create a new awareness towards the role of education in segregated areas and how this affects the future of these communities. The primary intent is to put the city on trial for the issues in education. The integration of an exhibition space dedicated to replicating historical and contemporary events that have changed the way the education system works. The project exposes the system and teaches the community about the moments not taught in school. The integration of the courthouse will give the students a new voice and stand in the education system’s decisions. The plaza addition will serve as the main attraction, where people can host events and express themselves through music, poetry, or any medium necessary to carry their point of view.

SPIDER’S LEG NANOTECTONICA PROFESSOR JONAS COERSMEIER COLLABORATED W/KHALED NAHAS ARCHITECTURAL ELECTIVE

RESEARCH STATEMENT There is a great intestest in the morphology of the spider’s leg and describe it in terms of gradients - those gradients could be focused on the environment, context and function. So in the first set of studies we focused on the function of the spider’s leg and how that affects the evolution of such legs. The evolution of their legs differ depending on the main function of the spider. This is because of pendulum mechanics since the cellar spider uses suspensory locomotion which uses potential energy of gravity to convert it into kinetic energy. This is important in a biomechanical point of view since the morphological traits could be decoupled from gravity. We found that the shape of spiders matches what we would expect if pendulum mechanics explains the adaptive evolution of spider’s morphology. Our studies suggest that leg length has been directly favoured by natural selection, since larger spiders that hang from their webs have disproportionately longer legs relative to ground spiders. These findings have potentially important ecological and evolutionary implications since they could partially explain the occurrence of foraging plasticity and dispersal constraints as well as the evolution of sexual size dimorphism and sociality.

RESEARCH STATEMENT This projects explores the fabrication and computation design of a parametric facade. The units or aggregation of facade components is used to create an overall composition that will play with the surroundings. The voided spaces allow the public to move and direct easily around the building. Some of the units of the facade opening vary in order to allow light in the most public spaces and prevents the excess of light in private spaces.

Whether it be a summer day at farmers’ market with music or a winter night with a performance in the community center. Connect KC will promote togetherness in the post-pandemic world.

In order to serve the needs of lower-income residents, 43% of the new housing will be affordable. Additionally, due to a lack of grocery stores in the area and in the Paseo West neighborhood, and affordable, everyday grocery store will be situated on the most accessible area of the proposed site. COLLABORATED: In this project I worked closely with the Project Manager, Susanna Chan. It is a new Capital One Cafe located in Back Bay, Boston. It’s main prupose is to become the hub of the neighborhood. The design intent is to welcome people in a bright and warm way by the integration of warm materials/elements and immesive lighting to embrace daylight exposure. I participated in schematic design phase; design sharades, modeling and producing visual interpretations to communicate with client. In addition producing construction documentation for BIDs and permits. Collaborated with vendors, general contractor, lighting, structural and MEP.
