The Catalyst
Where the body of Christ and the marketplace come together A publication of BIZ with a Good Name
Welcome to the second annual edition
of The Catalyst‌ where the body of Christ and the marketplace come together. The picture on the right is the cover of our first edition. Many have been blessed by last year’s edition, and we trust that this issue will be used of God to inform, equip and engage you further in your personal ministry. The Catalyst is a publication of BIZ With A Good Name. Our purpose is to provide resources about workplace ministry and provide the tools needed to live out your faith at work on a daily basis. Throughout scripture we read where God used men and women in the workplace to fulfill His purposes. Moses tending sheep, Gideon at the threshing floor, Elisha plowing and Lydia selling purple, are just a few examples of God calling people into workplace ministry. As believers today, we are called to serve the Lord wherever we are. God calls some to pastor, some to preach and some to perform their work in a manner which glorifies Him. Bezaleel (Exodus 31) is an example of God annointing His children for workplace ministry. Each business listed in this magazine is led by an individual who has subscribed to our Client Confession of Faith: I have trusted Christ as my personal Savior and pledge to strive to lead my business or organization according to scriptural principles. Statement of Accountability: As we live in a fallen world, if you are not satisfied in the manner in which one of our members conducts business please go to them privately and seek conflict resolution in a biblical manner. Please accept this valuable, free directory as an investment of our ministry in helping you to make a difference in the marketplace. You will want to keep this directory handy as a reference throughout the year. It would be appreciated if you would let the businesses listed know that you learned about them through the ministry of The Catalyst.
May God bless you and your family! 2
Purpose BIZ With A Good Name is the umbrella ministry which publishes The Catalyst. Membership is open to all churches, ministries and businesses who walk in the Christian faith and strive to conduct themselves in a professional and Christ-like manner in their daily activities. If you love the Lord, are involved in ministry or have a business, you already belong‌ why not make it official? We invite you to join our organization and help make an impact for the Kingdom. Our website is www.agoodname.biz. Office phone: 229.269.4690 Luncheons Marketplace luncheons are held quarterly and are open to everyone. Bring your faith to work. The Gospel message is under assault in the workplaces of our nation. Every month the Christian Law Association hears from large numbers of Christians who believe their rights are being violated. We are honored to serve and defend all of these people as part of our CLA ministry outreach.

omosexuality and transgender rights are in the national discussion. The federal government employment guidelines have changed, and Congress is looking to expand these “employment rights” based on sexual orientation into private workplaces. In light of these shifts, Christian rights are being trampled on nationally because telling a person that there is only one way to Heaven is often times considered harassment. Simple comments like, “you should read the Bible” or, “consider going to church” are now being treated as
the workplaces of our land. It is imperative that while Christians stand up for their rights, they should also diligently guard their testimonies. God’s Perspective on Employment
Three key passages describe the responsibilities of employees who work for God, as well as for their earthly employers.
I Timothy 6:1-2 Let as many servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honour, that the name of God and his doctrine be not blasphemed. And they that have believing masters, let them Because of the large amount of time spent at work, not despise them, because they are many Christians recognize that the workplace brethren; but rather do them service, provides an opportunity for witnessing. because they are faithful and beloved, partakers of the benefit. violations of corporate harassment I Peter 2: 18-20 Servants, be subject policy by a number of employers. to your masters with all fear; not only The Christian Law Association is committed to defending your rights to the good and gentle, but also to the froward. For this is thankworthy, to share Christ, invite people to if a man for conscience toward God church, or talk about the Bible in endure grief, suffering wrongfully. For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God.

A Word for Employees
Perhaps the best passage for modern-day employees is found in Colossians 3:22- 4:1. Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eye service, as men pleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God: And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ. But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done: and there is no respect of persons. Masters, give unto your servants that which is just and equal; knowing that ye also have a Master in heaven. The first spiritual principle we find here is that employees are to diligently perform their jobs to the best of their abilities, no matter how lowly or exalted that job may be. Employees are to have a singular focus in the workplace on doing a good job. As I Tim. 6:1-2 suggests, if we are fortunate enough to be employed in a Christian ministry, we should give even more, not less effort because we are serving the Lord directly. But even those Christian workers not directly working for a Christian ministry are commanded to give their best effort 100% of the time. Employees are not to give only “eye service” to their job. That is, they are not to work only when their employer or supervisor is watching. Christians should remember that God is watching them ALL of the time and their work should not only be as “men pleasers;” that is, only doing a good job when they are being observed. Christians are obligated to give their full measure of effort whether anyone is watching them or not. Christian employees should not attend only to what is inspected, but to everything that is expected of them. Christians should always consider that they are working for the Lord, whether 5
they are working for a ministry or secular employer. Even employees making widgets on an assembly line are ultimately working to please God; and they will receive their reward from the Lord, whether or not their worldly boss ever notices them or gives them a special commendation. The key thing God expects from employees, no matter what their work situation involves, is single-minded devotion to the job. As I Peter says, this singleminded devotion is expected of Christian workers whether their earthly boss is fair or unfair, kind or cruel. Every boss deserves the same respect and continual, consistent work performance that we would give to the Lord if we were working directly for Him. Christians must be careful not to put more emphasis on their “rights” than on what God says are their responsibilities. Whether or not your boss allows

quired to be the best, most honest and ethical, hardest working employees in the factory or office or ministry—or wherever God has placed you to work. That should be the distinctive of every Christian employee, whether or not his efforts are ever noticed or appreciated.

A Word for Employers Masters (employers) are not left out in these Scriptural admonitions. God expects employers to treat their employees well; to be just and fair with everyone. Christian employers should be the best employers of all because they

Nevertheless, this command to employers is not an “out” for employees. Employees are not to be good workers only if they have a good boss. These verses are a good backdrop for employees who want to witness at work. God tells us that the best workplace witnesses are those who do a good job and who obey their earthly employers no matter what the conditions might be on their job. They must earn the privilege of being a good witness to their coworkers as well as to their employer. When that high station has been achieved, there is no doubt that the employee’s witness for Christ will be great and Christ will truly be kept in that employee’s workplace.

Selling Among Wolves Without Joining the Pack
w
By: Michael Q PInk
hen we first enter the world of commerce, we’re told how to conform and we’re expected to do so. I began my sales career having no clue there were two systems based on two very different worldviews with two entirely different outcomes. I was told my mission was to work in the marketplace so I could fund the work of the kingdom. If possible I was to very discreetly share the gospel with coworkers and lead them to Christ. It was understood that we were to submit to the tyranny of the system without succumbing to its values. I entered the world of sales like many of you did, through what my friend Dennis Peacocke calls, Pharaoh’s School. It was there they taught me the ways of Egypt, the ways of the flesh or carnal nature. I wanted to learn God’s “way” but instead I was taught by reputable companies the subtle ways to appeal to a person’s pride, or their greed or their love of whatever the world has to offer. In short, I was taught how to appeal to the very side of human nature we are called to disdain. In the years that followed I struggled to find the Father’s “way” for succeeding in sales. Then one day it all changed for me. I took a job selling copiers in a city I had just moved to. On my first day, the vice president of sales told me they expected six sales in my first ninety days and from then on, to sell one out of four demonstrations. When I came home from work, my wife could see I was upset and asked what was bothering me. I told her they had asked me to accept a seventy-five percent failure rate, and I wasn’t happy about that. I reasoned, “What farmer plants four rows of corn and then prays to God that just one of them will come up?” I picked up my Bible and
told her I was going to study His word to find principles and strategies that I could apply to sales. If the Father really had a better “way”, I was going to find it and adapt it to the selling process. Instead of selling one out of four copiers, I purposed to sell one out of one! Ninety days later at my first quarterly sales review, I had to project my results on a screen in front of my peers. To their astonishment, I was able to report that I had done twenty-two demonstrations and closed twenty-two sales, which was three and a half times a goal no one had ever hit! The difference? I had found the “way” to successfully incorporate Biblical principles and strategies into the selling process. One reason folks don’t do well in sales is because they see the selling profession as an unclean thing, not recognizing that it’s neither moral nor immoral. For them, selling is a dirty word. They shun it, they dislike it, and they refuse to come to terms with it or to grow in their understanding of it. For their lack of knowledge, they slowly grind away in their mediocrity, living well below their God given potential as life slips by them, one unfulfilled dream after another. In a word, they begin to perish. 8
What happened? They were sold! Somewhere in life, they bought into the lie that selling is something you do to someone – for your profit, rather than with them – for mutual profit. Being decent people, they didn’t want to play that game. They’d seen the wolves thriving in the business arena virtually unchallenged and agonized internally over their prosperity, finally accepting the platitude that “nice guys finish last”. After all, they would rather be a nice guy and finish last, than a wolf and finish first, as if finishing first and being a nice guy were somehow mutually exclusive.
They walk with confidence into the lairs of any corporate boardroom and do not flinch, because they know the Shepherd is with them and they’ve learned His ways. Succeeding in sales is not about becoming a smarter wolf, a nicer wolf, a Christian wolf or in some way, a better wolf. No, succeeding in sales is about outserving your competition in the best interest of your customer. It’s about discovering your customer’s real needs and meeting them. It’s about understanding their goals, their dreams, and their vision for the future, then coming alongside, shouldering the burden and helping them get to their destination. It’s about not backing down from a ruthless competitor. It’s about hanging in there with the customer and walking them through their doubts, calming their fears and solving their problems. In short succeeding in sales is about bringing to bear on the customer’s behalf, that which benefits them most in a bold, uncompromising manner. And when the wolves begin to howl in the night, the nice guys among us can sleep peacefully, knowing they’ve honored God, served their fellow man and been true to themselves.
In the grand game of commerce, wolves and sheep compete for the same slice of the economic pie. In preparation for the contest, wolves don sheep’s apparel to ply their cunning ways under cover of implied innocence while hiding the devious essence of their soul. Many a sheep on the other hand, has traded the innocence of their soul for the crafty ways of the wolf, in a sorry attempt to level the playing field and win their “fair share” of the business. At the end of the day, they’ve become sheep in wolves clothing and that anguished, lonely howling they hear in the night – is their own. But there’s another breed arising! They’ve learned to walk close to the Shepherd while competing boldly with the wolves. They know how to keep their sense of balance in a most uneven world without adapting the predatory habits of their fiercest competitors.

You can know you are on your way to Heaven. First, realize God loves you. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world that He gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” The Bible teaches that regardless of your background, age, race, or any other factor, God loves you and desires a genuine, personal relationship with you. Second, realize everyone is a sinner. The Bible says in Romans 3:23, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” No one is perfect. We have all broken God’s commandments. This is called sin, and it separates us from God. Third, realize sin has a price that must be paid. Romans 6:23 tells us, “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” The “wage” or payment for our sin is death, which according to the Bible is eternal separation from God in a place called Hell. Fourth, realize Jesus Christ died to pay the price for your sin. Romans 5:8 says, “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” If we choose to accept Christ, we do not have to pay the price of death and Hell for our sins because Jesus paid for our sins when He died on the Cross and rose again three days later! Finally, pray and ask Jesus Christ to be your Saviour, and claim His promise of eternal life. In Romans 10:13 the Bible says, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” That is a promise directly from God that if you will pray to Him, confess that you are a sinner, ask Him to forgive your sins, and accept Him as your Saviour; He promises to save you and give you the free gift of eternal life.
