in a retro mood

I

t’s that time of the year again when we showcase some of the exciting products and trends out in the marketplace. Coincidently it’s also that time of the year when I feel the need to renovate. Luckily a limited budget keeps things under control. So we’ve re-painted the bathroom, changed the couch cushions (again) and bought new dining chairs. What is so great about design is that small changes can make a huge difference — new materials and colours or a simple re-arranging of furniture can breathe new life into a space. I’ve also been in a retro design mood lately and it seems many designers are too. I love the fresh takes on everything from appliances and faucets to furniture and lighting to convey a hip, retrostyle with modern technology and sensibility. Retro inspired interiors are also being integrated into many homes, like the one on our cover. Built in the late 60s, this retro revival home was given a complete overhaul by Sarah Gallop Design with stunning results. An annual favourite source of inspiration is IDSWest. Celebrating its 10th anniversary, it was

another successful show that featured speakers, designers and of course products. The West Coast love affair with wood continues with many great products using the material, especially black walnut. The beauty of wood is annually celebrated and recognized by the AWMAC Awards of Excellence. We’ve included the winners inside. Take a look at the 12 outstanding architectural woodwork projects on pages 16-17. Unique concepts and ideas are also highlighted inside these pages with the winners of two design competitions — L.A.M.P and World Architecture Festival.

blast from the past Retro style is making a daring comeback. Whether it’s showing off organic 1950s space age-inspired shapes, a clean-lined 1960s mid-century modern aesthetic or a fun 1970s vibe, retro is experiencing a full revival.

he retro inspired interior for this home built in the 60s is a stunning makeover by Sarah Gallop Design and Best Builders Ltd. Located in Tsawwassen, B.C., the home was in desperate need of an update. The result is a modern home with retro flair. This kitchen was relocated from the centre of the home to the rear wall in order to create a fantastic kitchen great-room. Custom millwork with contrasting white and dark colours gives this kitchen more than average interest. An island was created to centre this kitchen, and features a live edge wood bar top. Quartz countertops throughout adds longevity and durability to this highly used space. The lime green backsplash is fun and interesting. A floor to ceiling open pantry perfectly suits the natural lifestyle of the family.

top choices Countertop options today are endless from materials to styles to colours. Countertops are no longer merely a work surface, but play a key element in modern kitchen designs.

Black Kool Glass countertop from LEEZA Surfaces is 100 per cent tempered glass. Available in 16 colours.

The colours most specified in larger markets (NY, Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver) have been a very contemporary palette range: white, grey, silver, charcoal, black. Many designers love black but most materials, in black, are problematic: shows scratches more easily, mars, imperfections appears more obvious. Black & white (contrasting kitchens) continue to be popular.

Colour, shape, and texture options are truly endless with glass countertops.

thick or thin

era of glass

Thinner countertop surfaces with cleaner and simpler lines have been in fashion for several years in Europe and are starting to take hold in North America. Even when surfaces aren’t necessarily thinner, certain edge treatments are done to give the illusion of a thinner material, like a reverse bevel edge. The era of “chunky” slabs is starting to fade, especially where contemporary designs are being implemented. In quartz, 3cm material still remains popular but there is shift a to a thinner 2cm material which is being used on many large scale commercial and residential projects. When reverse bevel edges are used, the 2cm material looks more like 1cm. In solid surface, the traditional edge build-up is becoming less popular. Simple 1.2cm (½”) thick material, without additional edge buildup, is satisfying the desired thin look. For glass countertops, the most popular thickness is 1.2cm (½”). This is very consistent with Europe.

In Europe, colourful glass countertops have enjoyed immense popularity among consumers and designers alike. Colour, shape, and texture options are truly endless with glass countertops. Pure glass is a naturally non-porous material, so it doesn’t require sealing (like granite). Recycled glass countertops that use cement for a binder need to be sealed. It’s hygienic, easy to clean, and impervious to water, making it ideal for many horizontal and vertical applications, such as full-height backsplashes. Durable and dramatically stunning.

10

DESIGN QUARTERLY | Resource Guide 2014

quartz Quartz continues to maintain its popularity, offering the look of a stone countertop without the strict maintenance of a granite or marble. Quartz is extremely hard and durable, making it a long-lasting choice.

democratization A noticeable trend in lighting products is a democratization of design or open-ended design. Many designers are creating lights that allow the end-user to play with configuration options and ultimately create the final design themselves. A great innovation that allows people to participate in the design process, configure lights specifically to their space, and re-use or re-configure the lights as often as needed.

As a collection of hanging lights that materialize as a two dimensional line drawing suspended in mid-air, Wireflow gives life to a groundbreaking modern version of the pendant light. The luminaire’s material structure comprises a black power cable and 3.7W adjustable LED terminals. The diffuser in the general ambiance lighting version is made from pressed glass. The new collection of Wireflow hanging lamps sketches geometries in two and three dimensions and permits a great variety of sizes, always creating an effect of transparency that defines the captivating graphic essence of this light fitting. Designed by Arik Levy for Vibia. It won a Wallpaper 2014 Design Award.

set Set is a new modular concept that allows wall sconces to be arranged in different configurations. The collection consists of two kinds of elements: one element with an LED light source and one element without a light. Elements with LED lights are used at the bottom of each composition to project light up to the other elements, producing a pleasant lighting effect. The elements without a light source can be rotated to create infinite geometries of light. By day, Set enhances a wall with customizable patterns, creating a geometric light motif. At night, it accents the decor with glowing, ambient light, adding to the mood and the feeling of each moment. Designed for Vibia by Xuclà.

string String suspension lights come with 12 or 22 metres of Kevlar reinforced coaxial cable, allowing end-users to play with various configuration options and ultimately create their own pendant design. String is great solution for when the electricity point is not where it needs to be. Designed by Michael Anastassiades for Flos.

aim Aim pendants have moveable diffusers hanging from 354 inches of cable, which can be adjusted to allow the end user to play with configuration options and direction of the light. This light is great because people can change the fixture head as often as they need to re-focus light distribution. Designed by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec for Flos.

design proposal for the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria (AGGV) has won international recognition at the World Architecture Festival 2014 in Singapore. Winnipeg based 5468796 Architecture and Number TEN Architectural Group of Victoria were recognized with two prestigious design awards for their innovative concept-design submission. The AGGV project earned the Future Project of the Year award, as well as the category winner in the Future Projects Competition Entries. The two architecture firms were the only North American design firms to earn awards at the prestigious event, which were selected from a panel of the world’s most accomplished architects. The design re-imagines the gallery as a village of small pavilions engulfed by the inspired landscape cascading through the site. A choreography of gardens and new public spaces weaves the property back into the fabric of the surrounding neighbourhood, allowing visitors to engage the gallery at all hours and from all directions. Interior spaces are defined by transparent walls, layered behind an innovative system of wood quills that cantilever from an external structural mesh. The skin acts as a natural shading device that protects the artwork while allowing for a diffused light penetration, creating a quality of space inspired by the shade and shadow of the woodland site. Visitors meander through the exhibitions, held above the land as if walking through the tree canopy itself, a gallery experience unlike any other in Canada. The World Architecture Festival is the world’s largest festival and live awards competition dedicated to celebrating and sharing architectural excellence from across the globe. Together with landscape architecture firm Atelier Anonymous, 5468796 Architecture and Number TEN were selected from an impressive shortlist that included leading practices from more than 50 countries across the globe. The two firms were among three teams shortlisted for the AGGV’s $14-million expansion contract, but were not selected. 24

Replacing the cool blues and greens of recent years, a warmer spectrum of pinks, reds and oranges is emerging, reflecting a more positive global outlook. As a paint translation of this trend, AkzoNobel research points to a orangey copper tone. The largest global paints and coatings company revealed copper orange as the colour of the year 2015. perts following in-depth research into emerging worldwide trends. Great on its own, the colour also combines perfectly with pinks, neutrals, whites and other orange hues, as well as metallic colours such as gold. It reflects and complements all of the major trends identified for 2015: a warmth in attitude and a renewed emphasis on sharing; the natural palette of the earth, from clay tones to sunlit highlights of yellow; the skin tones that reflect human interaction and the sepia hues of the past. It is a colour of depth and currency that combines wonderfully with the everyday.
