remember a friend asking me once where do I come up with my ideas. Good question. Sometimes the hardest part about writing is finding ideas. After so many years of writing, the creative process still remains a mysterious beast to me. I do know, however, that what we see, feel, smell and hear greatly influences our creativity and expression. Ideas come from anywhere: a picture, a colour, an emotional film, an overheard comment or an afternoon stroll. Ideas are a great source of inspiration. Ideas definitely play an important role in the design process and the creation of design concepts. So with our 2010 Resource Guide, we once again have endeavoured to bring you a sampling of the wide selection of new and innovative products available along with a comprehensive listing of companies, products and services specific to the design industry. Beginning with trends for 2010, we take a look at what the world’s largest furniture retailer IKEA has identified as the four key home décor styles in the new year. Then onto the favourite room in any house — the kitchen — where we

Grey is the achromatic hue of the year. From high-gloss finishes for kitchens and bathrooms, to textured knits and woven fabrics, it is the perfect neutral. Subtle ranges in the shade, from cool pewter to deep slate, make it interesting to layer and bring a strong focus to texture.

The use of more natural shapes is a move towards interiors that feel safe, familiar and relaxing. There is a certain softness that can be added to a room by incorporating furnishings with rounded edges, organic shapes and curvy lines.

forward thinking ideas The Electrolux Design Lab 2009 award winners showcase home appliance ideas for the next 90 years. The thoughtfully-designed products address how people will prepare and store food, wash clothes, and do dishes over the next nine decades. This year more than 900 entries were submitted from students in more than 50 countries.

Winner: “Cocoon” by Rickard Hederstierna, Lund Institute of Technology, Sweden Cocoon is a sustainable response to the world’s growing population and its desire to consume meat and fish. Similar to heating popcorn in a microwave, Cocoon prepares genetically-engineered and pre-packaged meat and fish dishes by heating muscle cells identified by RFID (radio frequency identification) signals. The signals detect the specific dish and then suggest the required cooking time. This process utilizes science to create food, lifting a burden on the planet by reducing the need for further intensive farming and fishing.

Second Place: “Water Catcher” by Penghao Shan, Zhejiang Sci-tech University, China To address water shortage, Water Catcher, is a flying rain catcher and water purifier. This automated device dispatches small flying balls in the air to catch rain drops. They then return to a homing tray that purifies the water for drinking. Once purified, the balls take the drinking water directly to a person to be drunk. The homing tray also reads finger prints to determine what additives should be added to the water to ensure the drinker optimizes their health.

Third Place: “Renew” by Louis Filosa, Purdue University, USA Renew is a smart steamer that refreshes and cleans clothes. With two steam blades, Renew “blasts” garments clean. An infrared scanner and RFID (radio frequency identification) gather information from specifically designed clothing tags. Renew is safe to use, disabling the steamer if an unidentified object is detected, like a hand. An OLED touch screen allows for interaction. At 25 per cent the size of a current washing machine, Renew conserves space and is made of recycled aluminium and glass.

Finalist: “Naturewash” by Zhenpeng Li, Zhejiang University, China Naturewash is a waterless washing machine that uses negative ions to wash nano-coated fabrics. Horizontal in shape, the washing machine has three touchscreen settings: clean clothes, grass scent, and flower scent. A user can lie or sit on Naturewash to clean or refresh the clothes they are wearing. For a more thorough clean, clothes can be placed flat on the washer.

Finalist: EDL 09 “Bifoliate” by Toma Brundzaite, Vilnius Academy of Art, Lithuania Putting away clean dishes from the dishwasher is often a tedious job. That’s why Toma Brundzaite has designed Bifoliate, a space-saving, wall-mounted double dishwasher that allows the user to put dirty dishes in one compartment and use the other as a shelf for clean dishes. The dishwasher uses ultrasonic wave technology to clean making it more efficient and eco-friendly than today’s dishwashers.

People’s Choice: “Teleport Fridge” by Dulyawat Wongnawa, Chulalongkorn University, Thailand Dulyawat Wongnawa envisions a time when the technologies found in science fiction become reality, specifically teleportation. His concept, the Teleport Fridge teleports food, eliminating the time and distance a person has to travel to buy fresh groceries or products from a store or farm. Using touchscreen technology as the interface for the teleportation process, the Teleport Fridge simply teleports food to compartments in its refrigeration and freezer units.
