Maison de Ville - Materì Sustainable Architecture - Urban Planning prof. Patrizia Montini, Massimo Rossetti Realised with Giacomo Ghinello, Michelangelo Mezzocolli Master IUAV, 1st semester, 2013 - 14 The project is set in Matera, a rural town, based on a subsistence economy, located in the north of Benin, a country in Central Africa. The project consists of two parts: one hotel of 200 beds; residences for about 500 people. The installation of the facility is oriented perpendicular to the main city street; determining the role of the urban space in front of the hotel, a point of socializing and sharing for tourists and citizens. “Maison de Ville” is trying to overcome the western cliché of the hotel “exotic” particularly widespread in Africa, where the luxurious facilities are very introverted and creates a clear separation between tourists and local citizens.

The top image shows the architectural model of the project, made by laser cutting and photographed with a digital SLR camera. The photo has been altered using Adobe Photoshop.

The residential agglomeration and the hotel are included in a system that connects visually and functionally the two hemispheres. The objective is clear, to ensure quality and safety of the environment and create a rule through drawing.

Compared to the randomness in the distribution of the buildings in MaterĂŹ, the new development is based on a rule, where properties are defined in order to avoid arbitrary appropriation of the surrounding space.

IUAV

The building aims to create a real balance between the typical activities of a hotel and the pace of local life. The idea is to provide accommodation for both tourists and residents of Materi, to ensure full functionality of the structure during the year.

The design of the plan of the hotel is inspired by traditional African design, which is characterized by colonial influences and references anthropomorphic. The rooms are on the edge, in the center are located hall, shops and the catering area.

The residences have been designed to be manufactured with construction materials (mud bricks) local and therefore of easy availability, ensuring a better technological support than the one usually used.

In the design of the residences it has followed the principle of building the typical African house, where day care spaces are shared and where more people as part of a large family share the property.

Quadra 207 Norte - Brasilia Urban Design - Residential prof. Aldo aymonino, Laura zampieri, Enrico fontanari, Agostino Cappelli Realised with: Giacomo Ghinello, Michelangelo Mezzocolli, Martina Nuzzo Master IUAV, 2nd semester, 2013 - 14 The project area is the Quadra 207, lot overlooking the highway north of the city, one of the few areas in Brasilia remained untouched by development started in the sixties with the original plan of Lucio Costa. The project revolves around two axes, one pedestrian and one road. The path driveway is inspired by Europeans “woonerf: a succession of rest areas, obstacles, flower beds that slow traffic and make the presence of cars less limiting for the pedestrian. In addition to that, there will be a redevelopment of the subway to the bus and a new metro station. This system affects mobility and relations with the residential buildings and the principle by which they were designed.

The image above depicts a schematic plan of Lucio Costa Brasilia with realitve Quadras. Realised with Adobe Illustrator.

17

IUAV

A key theme of the project is the doubling of the commercial front, open to the project area. By inserting strips of trees and rest areas for pedestrians, it is delimited space relevant to the shops.

Galeazze Ovest - Venezia Heritage - Adaptive Reuse prof. Roberta Albiero, Francesco Doglioni, Maurizio Milan realised with: Martina Nuzzo, Rossella Villani Master IUAV, 1st Semester, 2014 - 15 The “Galeazze Ovest”, are old warehouses dating back to 1580, where ships of the Serenissima Republic of Venice were sheltered. Currently they are poorly used and the land behind them is totally abandoned and the buildings above in ruins. The project involves the redevelopment of these buildings through the creation of offices and a school, while in the Galeazze there’s the introduction of exhibition halls and recreational areas linked to water sports. The guiding principle is the conservation, the walled perimeters were kept and were not made demolition, except for the holes on the walls of the Arsenale to create the two entrances.

In the image above you can see the three Galeazze and the water basin of the Arsenale. Render made with ArchiCAD, Maxwell Render and Adobe Photoshop.

25

The project calls for the respect of the existing limits, however, creating a more complex relationship to the ground in relations between the buildings. Transparency and light play a key factor in the design of spaces.

Burgo do Couros - Guimarães Modular - Ephemeral Cultural prof. Paulo Jorge Figueira Almeida Urbano Mendonça, Paulo Lago de Carvalho Erasmus UMinho, 2nd semester, 2014 - 15

The complex architectural stratification and the rigid geometry of the design of the floor plan, due to the shape of COUROS, imposes a comparison with the pre-existence. Added to this is the direct approach to the area, through careful photographic cataloging of artifacts and an accurate survey of the buildings involved in the intervention. Reportedly now it looks, the absence of a solution of continuity between the buildings. Hence the attempt to find an answer in the project who could give an overview of the area and that riesva to bond the surfaces where they extend the Couros in a system that favors a return of activity.

The picture above is one of the granite buildings in the area of Couros Guimarães, now abandoned, where it will be made a redevelopment. The design was created with Adobe Illustrator.

7 x 10 x 21 - Marghera (Venezia) House Concept Prof. João Luís Carrilho da Graça W.A.VE. IUAV, Summer, 2013

The Tresse island, situated at the confluence of the channel with the channel Tresse Malamocco-Marghera, was designed by the Water Authority of Venice for the planting of sludge from the excavation and dredging of canals, rivers and sea beds of the city Venice and the Lagoon. Unused 90s, the island has rapidly eroded margins by putting polluting materials in direct contact with water. The location of the island facing directly toward the skyline of Venice makes it particularly interesting as a landscape midway between the historic city and the industrial area. The goal is to create a residential settlement on this site.

The sketch at the top was designed by architect João Luís Carrilho da Graça as a concept of the workshop.

Cube - Monte Zebio (Vicenza) “Theaters of War” - Exhibition prof. Alberto Ferlenga, Stefano Stanghellini realised with Giacomo Ghinello, Michelangelo Mezzocolli IUAV, Spring, 2013 The project site is located on the Asiago Altopiano, on the summit of Mount Zebio, to 1680 m. Here, as on other nearby mountains, the Austro-Hungarians in the First World War positioned themselves after the failure of Strafexpedition and built a formidable system of fortifications. The area of the trenches on top of Zebio has been transformed into an “outdoor museum”. All interventions are designed to keep the memory of the war. The goal of the workshop is to create an architectural device to be integrated with the existing museum and which aims to create the visitor a hint of what life must have been in the trenches.

The logo at the top is a stylization of the project, represents the two concrete blocks that contain the exhibition rooms. Drawing made by ArchiCAD and Adobe Illustrator.

45

Workshop

To evoke the rise of the soldiers in the trenches blocks have been placed along the passage of the old trail leading to the top of the mountain where they were located the Austro-Hungarian.
