Focuses on accounting and builds the foundation for participants to understand the significance and use of information in financial reports relative to management decisions.

Module learning objectives: Learn the relationships between the primary financial statements (balance sheet, income statement and statement of cash flows); Learn the significance of accrual accounting concepts and the differences between income, cash flow, assets and expenses; Learn the meaning of the terms and data found in financial reports.

Finance Dr. GEORGE KANATAS

Jesse H. Jones Professor of Finance Jones Graduate School of Business, Rice University The finance portion deals with managing growth, earnings and cash, and with a firm’s weighted average cost of capital and its relation to both Economic Value Added (EVA) and capital expenditure analysis.

Module learning objectives: Gain an understanding of the effect of growth on earnings and cash and how to determine optimal growth; Study how to determine a firm’s cost of capital and how it relates to the distinction between earnings and economic profit; Learn how to apply investment evaluation techniques including discounted cash flow analysis, payback and return on capital.

Financial Statement Analysis Dr. BRIAN ROUNTREE Assistant Professor of Accounting Jones Graduate School of Business, Rice University Concentrates on financial statement analysis and will employ existing knowledge to understand how companies’ strategies and operational execution are revealed in financial statements. We develop a systematic performance evaluation methodology that provides the foundation for assessing current and future economic prospects, along with linking this information to valuation.

Module learning objectives: Develop an understanding of earnings management techniques and evaluate the implications for future performance; Introduce the concept of ratio analysis and illustrate how to adjust ratios for differences in accounting techniques and operational decisions; Create a systematic method for evaluating firm performance using publicly available financial statements and linking this to forecasts of future performance.

Dr. KAREN K. NELSON Professor of Accounting, Accounting Area Coordinator Education: B.S., University of Colorado; Ph.D., University of Michigan Dr. Nelson investigates factors that influence the quality of financial reporting and disclosure and the role of regulators, auditors and private securities litigation in monitoring financial reporting quality. Her research focuses on earnings management and the interaction between corporate financial reporting strategies and securities litigation. She has held research seminars at leading business schools around the country.

Dr. George Kanatas Jesse H. Jones Professor of Finance, Finance Area Coordinator Education: B.S., The City College of New York; Ph.D., University of Kansas; Ph.D., Johns Hopkins University Dr. Kanatas’ work in the industry has been in the areas of capital budgeting, strategic financial analysis, and bank regulation. His research has dealt with bank capital regulation, deposit insurance, loan contracting under imperfect information, the effects of product market competition on corporate financial policy, and most recently, the effects of social culture on economic decisions.

Dr. Brian Rountree Assistant Professor of Accounting Education: B.S., Babson College; Ph.D., University of North Carolina Dr. Rountree examines the ways in which analysts, auditors and regulators influence firms’ financial reporting choices. His research addresses the market valuation of earnings smoothing, whether government-mandated changes in disclosure lead to improved financial reporting, and how the collapse of Arthur Andersen changed the market for audit services.
