1. Mostly A’s
Natachee’s Supper ‘n Punch 3622 Main St. Midtown (Ensemble/HCC Stop) This contemporary American eatery doesn’t just have great food but also a great experience with its particular blend of a comfortable roadhouse atmosphere and eccentric art-lined walls. Also, be sure to stop by on a Friday or Saturday so that you can enjoy a live band on their outdoor patio.
2. Mostly B’s
Tacos A Go-Go 3704 Main St. (Ensemble/HCC Stop) TAGG is definitely a Rice standard, but who can resist the magic of TexMex? Though it’s famous for its dessert tacos, this restaurant offers a wide variety of tortilla-swaddled dishes. Let’s also not forget the awesome Mexican pop art that covers every square foot of the restaurant’s wall space, making for a better-than-par atmosphere for a Tex-Mex joint.
3. Mostly C’s
Roma’s Pizza 233 Main St. (Downtown Stop) Are you looking for a Saturday hangout and/or study spot? Check out Roma’s for the timeless gourmet meal that is late-night pizza and coffee. It’ll be supah cheepe with your 10% student discount, and the downtown location has free wifi to boot.
4. Mostly D’s
Cali’s 3030 Travis St. (McGowen Stop) In the mysterious limbo-land between Midtown and Downtown there’s a little place called Cali’s. With by far the best phô in Houston for $5-7, bánh mi for <$3, and some damn good smoothies, what more could you possibly want? Maybe some free sesame seed buns if you happen to be around at night when they close (which is usually whenever they feel like it)
ART LAB:
As great as food is, that is not the only thing we want to showcase in this issue. We want to talk about creativity, namely your creativity and how Art Lab wants to showcase and promote you. So....
WHY WORKSHOPS? You’re probably a little brilliant, admit it. Learning new things, especially when it comes to hard logical thinking, comes easier to you than to most. Your knowledge within your academic major is extensive and the chances of you having an awesome future is higher than the chances of you bumming around for life. Success! Now think: this past semester, how many times did you let your creative thinking dominate? When was the last time you let your imagination or thoughts run wild, not giving a fuck about practicality or fear of the “wrong answer”? Expressing your own thoughts into something tangible, memorable, and sharable is healthy for you. This is art therapy! The resulting balance in creativity and rationality works wonders for the other parts of your life too.
So why go to an Art Lab workshop? Because going to artistic lectures, fancy gallery openings, and cultural events just teases your creative thinking; to truly dig into your creative potential, you have to try expressing your own thoughts physically with your own hands.
Instead of just talking about art (which is nice and all) Make art! Each Art Lab workshop is designed to accomodate all skill-levels and the Rice student schedule. Each will be a completely non-judgmental zen zone where you can just focus on doing you. At the same time, you can meet all kinds of people along the spectrum.
It’s an art jam sesh! So why go to an Art Lab workshop? Because it’s all kinds of good for the spirit! P.S. Check out the awesome collages from our first workshop in Fondy and in the pages of this Zine!
