WORK PLACEMENT INTRODUCTION In January 2022, I was given the opportunity to work with Anthony Burrill. Due to the COVID restrictions, we only work on-site once a week and on the other days we have to work from home. During the placement, I have to develop a website to document one of the typefaces that Burrill has designed. In addition, I have designed a specimen book, posters and Instagram posts to promote typeface.

DAY 1 The first day of my placement was more of an introduction, I have to go to Anthony Burrill’s studio in Kent to introduce ourselves and talk more about the brief project I would be working on. This was also an opportunity to get to know more Burrill, he took me around his studio, showing me all his work and some other work that has inspired him. We also plan how we would be working remotely on the following days, we set daily meetings at 9:30 in the morning. For lunchtime, we went to the town of Rye where we have lunch together. It was surprising to see how most of the shops and restaurants in town have all his posters displayed. After lunch, we stayed in town and visited the letterpress printing, Rye Adam, which was the place where Anthony printed the famous poster “WORK HARD & BE NICE TO PEOPLE”. It was really exciting for me to be where it all started and get to know more about the process of printing.

DAY 2 On the second day, I have to work from home, so we have our daily meeting by Zoom in the morning where Anthony set some tasks for the day. By this time of the placement, the brief was to develop a website for the four typefaces he designed, Function, Kit Form, Lisbon and Metal and document its inspiration and the design, together with uses by other designers. So before we start developing the website, Anthony give me the task to study each font by researching its inspirations, examination of its construction and seeing how the letterforms relate to each other. In my research, I noticed that the four typefaces are all built of geometric shapes, have a stencil style appearance and most of them are inspired by particular places which give each one some personality. All these findings were added to a digital sketchbook, so the following day at the daily meeting I could show to Anthony the work I did from the previous day.

BUILDING A WEBSITE

DAY 3 On this day, Anthony realised that developing a website for four typafeces among with other outcomes, it would be a lot of work. Intead he suggected to select one of the typefaces to develop the website, so after looking through all the typefaces I decided to focus on the Function font. This font has catch my attention for its contemporary style and bold design make this type one of my favorites. Once selecting the typeface “Function” to develop the website, I have done some reach about other site that display and get an idea of how Icould display mine. After I finish with my resarch, I have made some sketches of how could be structure the website.

DAY 4

On the fourth day, I started developing my website on Adobe XD software, based on the sketches I made the previous day I have done three different drafts for the website with different colour palettes. I have used black and white, which are the most common colours in most of Anthony Burrill’s works, the other colour was yellow as the function typeface was inspired by the yellow mural painting in Shoreditch and the other colour was blue, which was the one Anthony liked it and told me to work on.

This day was the first day of the second week, we did our daily meeting and showed my outcomes for the website to Anthony and he was really happy with work. So we move on to the posters as it needed to be done by Wednesday because on the last day of the placement I would have to print it out and they needed to create the screen for the poster one day ahead. During this day, all I did was create different outcomes for the posters for at least have 30 of them and Anthony select one of them.

After lunch, I have made several mock-ups for the monsters as it was asked by Anthony.

DAY 10 On the final day, I have to travel to the Harvey Lloyd Screens printer in East Sussex, where I was going to print the posters together with Anthony. The owner of the place is a close friend of Burrill and they have worked together for a very long time. They have also worked with famous graphic designers and studios like Sara Boris, SPIN studio and others. As I sent my poster design ahead, they have already the screen prepared. All I have to do was to set up the printer and do many posters as could. This day was one of my favourite ones as after working for two weeks we get to see the final product.

CONCLUSION Working with Anthony Burrill was one of the best experiences I have had in my learning experience, he is such a nice person which makes it easy to work with, this shows me how important is to have a good relationship with your coworker, as this can stimulate your performances at work. But my overall learning from my placement with Anthony is that the design is all about experiments, it is okay to make mistakes as we learn from them and I should always be positive because if you work hard, good things would come from it. Another thing I would highlight from placement experience is that the design industry works faster than the academic way.
