Is Your Mind Open For Business? I offer all my clients an introductory consultancy session free of charge. It's a chance for me to find out a bit about their business and what they want to achieve but, more importantly, an opportunity to pass on some free nuggets of advice to get them started. I had such a meeting yesterday. It started really well - we chatted about his past history, his goals and aspirations and the direction he wanted for his business. It was when it came to the advice bit that it all started to go horribly wrong. Every time I suggested a course of action, he told me it wouldn't work. Each proposal was met with the same negativity. Quite frankly, it was hard work! For every plan, he had a counter-plan. For every recommendation, he had a reason why it wasn't workable. In short, he resisted every single idea I gave him. Now, I don't claim to be an expert, but I'm good at what I do and, as this individual came to me by way of referral, I have to assume that my contact who referred him thinks so too. So why was he dismissing absolutely everything I said? Some people have closed minds. They know what they want and what they think they need and are simply not open to any suggestion that doesn't conform to their thinking. These people will never succeed in business. That's right, never! If you really want to be successful, you have to be open to suggestion, to the ideas of others. Now, you don't have to take all of them on board, or even agree with them, but you really do need to give them consideration. It's easy to get a fixed idea of your business, of what it's about and what you want it to be. But, quite often, you have nurtured that business and put an awful lot of emotional energy into it, even at the start-up stage. It's therefore often difficult to get a true perspective of what your business needs and that emotional connection can severely cloud your judgement. If you want your business to grow, you have to be open to suggestion, to exploring new avenues and perhaps accepting that the vision you had for that business isn't necessarily workable in its current form. You have to be open to a certain level of criticism, as long as it's entirely constructive. At the end of the day, no-one likes to be told they are wrong, but when it comes to taking on the world, two heads are definitely better than one. Just don't expect them to always be in total agreement. If you want to grow your business, you have to be open to new ideas. Because if you always do things the same way, you'll always get the same results.
How To Start An Online Business - Mind Set
Albert Einstein was described by teachers to be "mentally slow, unsociable, and adrift forever in foolish dreams." How many times did Edison "fail" before creating the light bulb? If my memory serves me correctly it was over 2,000 times. When starting an online business one must take into account the psychological ramifications of "creating something out of nothing" that sounds profound for a finite human! But in all seriousness we do well to afford ourselves plenty of failings and mistakes on our entrepreneurial journey. When doing online business or a host of other things a person begins with somewhat of a goal in mind. Now after working hard and long in the arena of starting an online business a person may not achieve the desired result in the desired time frame. Then what? well we know that anger and similar emotions are often times fostered by a unreached goal. But that will only be prevalent if the person cast aside the unavoidable certainty that this particular genera is fraught with those pot holes. Furthermore we do well to envision a picture of successes in terms of our online business future. Just like in life it is could to envision yourself in a positive manner so it is likewise in the online business world. I would air on the side of caution in regard to goals and time deadlines thereby creating and environment conducive to success and encouragement. How many people have bought into the get rich quick deception only to be demoralized when their failed expectations begin to materialize. I mentioned having realistic goals, as you know someone in any kind of competitive situation be it karate training or some complex dance routine will at first go through the motions at a very slow pace then increase momentum. What I mean without getting overly dramatic is there is a sort of system and art form in starting an online business. If only one would take that time to learn that steps and motions at a health
pace they would be proficient, profitable, and effective in a very short time. Isn't it ironic that when starting an online business the fastest way is actually to be slow and methodical. I know that is a turn off but allow me to share my own experience limited as it may be. I talk of slowness but I will work diligently from early in the morning to evening. How would someone say working full or part-time achieve a working understanding of online business? It would have to be a structured system of simply learning for a period of time before attempting to put to flight any ideas. I say this only to debunk some of the false ideas and notions in regard to making money quickly online. I'm a super advocate of starting an online business and making money quickly. I just (and I guess I got long-winded) think the fastest way is to take your time.
Start With Your Goal In Mind to Maximize Business Success
I was at a new restaurant. They handed me a menu. I opened it and the first thing listed was dessert. I knew it was going to be a fabulous meal. My husband laughs at me because I always look at a menu in reverse order. What desserts do they have? What, if anything, am I going to want? Is there more than one dessert that interests me? Am I going to want to share a dessert? I need to know how to pace myself, how much room to save in my "dessert spot" and if I need to get someone on board with me to split a dessert or maybe convince them to have the other dessert I'm interested in. Once I figure out dessert I can decide what I want to eat. It's the same thing in your business. You need to start at the end in order to figure out the best way for you to get there. When you have the end goal in sight, know how you want to feel when you get there, and what will be going on when you achieve it, it becomes much easier to plot your course. When you are at a restaurant the amount of time it will take you to reach your goal (that is to say, how long it takes to reach dessert) is predetermined, it's the length of one meal. In your business, the amount of time it takes you to reach your goal is up to you.
Once you decide how long you want it to take, you can think of details or added bells and whistles as side dishes. Do you want to add them or skip them? If you add them, does it change how long it will take you to reach your goal? If it does, are you okay with that? Do you need to partner with someone so that they can share the work and help you get it done quicker or maybe team up with someone to collaborate so that you can accomplish more in the same amount of time? Having your goal in sight is vital to everything you do. Knowing your goal will guide you on how you structure your day, the products and services you offer and projects you decide to take on. It's also true for how you work with your clients. What are their goals? What is the best route for them to reach that goal? What role does your business play in their goals? How can you help yourself (and your clients) reach dessert? Oh and that restaurant I was at was Cowboy Ciao in Scottsdale, AZ. Dinner was delicious and the dessert was even better. I highly recommend it.

The Key to Success in Business - Peace of Mind
Success in business requires pretty much the same mindset you need for success in life. The key to success we are talking about here is establishing a peace of mind. Our ability to attain such a state of mental bliss results from a lack of guilt, envy, selfishness or greed. Unfortunately our laser targeted focus for business success often times 'taints' our morals and better judgment. As a result this mental state of nirvana is more difficult to maintain once we submerge ourselves into the business world. The irony is our professional success is usually dependent upon our own personal productivity which in turn is enhanced by our peace of mind. So in reality our sometimes overly aggressive and 'blind' ambitions to succeed in business inhibit our own ability to actually excel. Hmmm. Here are 5 examples how maintaining a peace of mind by actually 'walking the walk' and doing the right thing can help you succeed in your journey for business success. Maintaining Gratitude Focusing on what you have as opposed to what you want will make a big difference in your outlook and in the way people perceive you. Heck you may even end up feeling happy all the time which could lead to a more productive you. That wouldn't be all that bad now would it? Drop the Envy Be competitive is one thing but being envious is quite another. The green eyed monster will make you constantly miserable and oblivious to all the good things that are part of your life. Strive to be the best person you can be and not to be like someone else.
Lighten Up Hey stuff happens so expect that and learn to take it in stride. Learn from the things that don't go your way and relish those things that do. It will be easier on your own health and will make you more enjoyable to be around or to associate with. Give and You Shall Get In work as in life it is always better to give then to receive. You know that warm and fuzzy feeling don't you? In fact the more you live this principal the more you will come to find that you will attract like minded people. The result will be that these people will 'give' back to you in return for your own demonstrated generosity. This goes for kind gestures or value you may have shared personally or professionally.
Attitude Determines Altitude The right attitude will not only make you feel better about yourself and life but will also be evident to the people you work and live with. The right attitude can attract people while a bad attitude can just as easily repel them. Success in business and success in life are goals that most everybody aspires to achieve. Curiously enough however is that the key to success in any endeavor is actually maintaining a peace of mind. This is the mindset we experience when all is good and our conscience is clear of any guilt, greed, aggression, or selfishness. Ironically our tunnel like vision that focuses on the achievement of professional success sometimes 'corrupts' our ability to maintain this coveted mindset. As a result our own personal productivity is diminished thereby making our professional goals more difficult to achieve. As you can see in the 5 examples we reviewed above by living right we can maintain this peaceful state and more easily attain our goals. Everybody wins!
