“after every game i analyse everything from possession, to shots, to heat maps, the lot and this weekend was no different. why have we become the draw specialists?”
Welcome to Steve Heath, his players, and supporters from AFC Dunstable. It sounds a strange thing to say because it is welcoming another team to their home ground. Hopefully the weather behaves, and we can finally get the game on at the second time of trying. I said it last week and I repeat it again, I have a huge amount of respect for Simon and Steve at AFC Dunstable. They are both great people and have always been good with me and other members of the club.
AFC Dunstable have a lot of players in their squad that I have worked with in the past and will be a tough challenge for us tonight and one we are all looking forward to. As much as we all get on off the pitch when the game starts it is strictly business as usual and both of us will be desperately trying to win the game. There is a reason AFC Dunstable are always towards the top end of the table. They have a very experienced Manager in Steve as well as an excellent blend of youth and experience within their squad. As you will know me well enough by now to know I speak with a purity and honesty
of how I feel, and tonight’s programme notes will be no different. There are times when I really hate football! I did on Saturday for all of about five minutes at the end of the game. Only a Manager can fully empathise with that sickening feeling when you see the opposition put the ball into the net with the last kick of the game. It has happened to us too often this season. We are an incredibly fit side so are not making errors through fatigue but crazy decisions at critical moments of the game. Our players worked incredibly hard, played well, and didn’t deserve anything less than three points on Saturday in a game I felt we were in complete control of. I let the players know just how frustrated I was at the end of the game.
My frustration like so many others was due to the nature of the draw. I felt it was important to let the players know I wasn’t about to accept another point when it should have been three. Away at Ardley when the same thing happened I consoled and empathised but on Saturday it was important to
tell it differently. At 2-0 up we were so in control, never in danger and on the front foot. Moments at this level change games unfortunately and anytime you go down to 10 men you always create a problem for yourself. Firstly, I must make it clear I hold no grudge or bare any resentment to Robbie Goodman who was sent off. Robbie felt terrible afterwards however he is not to blame. Robbie did what any centre back would do. Human nature and human reaction is to do anything to keep the ball out the net. It was a series of events that led to it that was so avoidable. We then have to preserve and protect, and a ricochet drops to their centre forward who hits it to the bottom corner.
We have been desperately unlucky with injuries and suspensions. Kyle Faulkner started well yesterday and looked a real threat but then had to come off with a nasty foot injury. I’m delighted to say that his foot isn’t broken, and it is nasty bruising so hopefully he will be back soon. We then lost James Verney to a groin strain, and which again was a freakish looking injury. If our luck begins to turn, then in a couple of weeks we could be back to full strength and then I have no doubts we will really kick on. After every game I analyse everything from possession, to shots, to heat maps, the lot and this weekend was no different. Why have we become the draw specialists is the big question? Is it just bad luck? I don’t like to attribute anything to luck because then you are reliant on relinquishing control of our own fate. Over the 38 game league season if you rely on luck all season then you are in trouble. If we isolate the performance on Saturday and take the result away had the game stayed at 2-0, would I be questioning anything? Who knows. The reality is that once again through our own ridiculous errors we end up with one point as opposed
to three! It needs to stop and quickly. If people think I am going to keep saying to players “unlucky, its ok and don’t worry about it” think again! The demands are high here and the day I decide to lower my demands and accept anything other than the best for Dunstable Town is the day Dunstable Town will be welcoming a New Manager to proceedings which I hope is not for a long time yet.
Four defeats in 23 competitive games for some people is a good return and a lot of Managers out there have been honest to say they would snap my hand off for that record. Statistics tells us that currently we have a 17.39% of losing a competitive game and a 60.87% chance of winning with 82.6% leading to a game without defeat.
Unfortunately, I am not built like others. I am built differently and the standards I hold myself accountable for are far higher than I would ever expect from another human being. Mediocre might be ok for some but will never be accepted by myself and that is why I am so furious when we don’t see games out through stupid errors.
Our points return in the league needs to improve and that is a fact. We only have two league fixtures this side of Christmas so you don’t need to be a university graduate to work out from January onwards is when our league campaign will be defined. Hopefully, we will have a full squad to choose from when that time comes. Some players thrive on competition, and it makes them better, some can get sloppy if there is not competition hanging around. As the great saying goes, “If you can’t take the heat” I am sure you all know the rest.
Enjoy tonight’s game.
Good evening, everyone and welcome to Creasey Park for this evening’s match in the 1st Round of the Beds Senior Challenge Cup.
Our opponents tonight are AFC Dunstable who we groundshare Creasey Park with. As we have been drawn as the “home” team you’ll see Joe, Kyle and the coaches and subs take the home dugouts while Steve Heath and his team will take the away dugouts. It will be the same with the changing rooms.
AFC operate under the same conditions as we do at Creasey Park. They also don’t receive any matchday income from the sale of food and drink and pay the same to hire the facilities as we do. But for whatever reason, old fashioned sentiment, a fear of the unknown or as I like to firmly believe, a positive decision to create something very different, something very new and something
which takes Dunstable Town into a world of Community & Fan owned clubs where football is only part of what we do, the Club’s membership decided to take a different path into the world of Community Benefit Society clubs and operate as a social enterprise. The Club’s current ownership is around 140. Our last two owners have both been Americans so it’s nice to know that the word is spreading across the pond.
Of equal importance to the success of the First Team are our five community groups which exist as part of our programme, Improving the Lives of Others. Each group offers something a bit different to the others. Ian Bateman has transformed Walking Football and we’re looking to expand these groups even further with interested community partners. Sphere at the Glider wouldn’t be able to run without the support of DTFC owner and sponsor,
Rupert
“the club’s current ownership is around 140. Our last two owners have both been americans so it’s nice to know that the word is spreading across the pond.”
Groves, while Chums & Crumbs corun by Lee Nutley on behalf of DTFC & Vicky Harding from Titan PCN does the most incredible work with people every Thursday at the Dunstable Centre. Transforming & improving people’s lives for the better is why we exist and why we do what we do. While Joe and Kyle look after matters on the pitch, Ian, and Lee look after things in the community.
It was our community work which helped bring about a three-year sponsorship deal with Tandem Bank, who have now become the Club’s official banking partner. Tandem Bank are the UK’s leading greener, digital bank helping people enjoy a more affordable lifestyle, while reducing their carbon footprint.
For a club of our size where our community work has equal importance and standing as what we do on the football pitch this generous three-year sponsorship deal enables us to work with even more organisations and groups of people. Talks are already taking place with well-established local groups, and I hope to be able to make an official announcement or two very soon.
If you read the programme in chronological order, you’ll have read Joe’s thoughts on the last-minute equalizer that Potton scored. It’s gutwrenching and heart-breaking to concede again so late in the day and knowing how self-critical and hard on himself Joe is, my immediate concern is always for Joe. Nobody, and I mean nobody, could be doing more than he is and I know when the long list of walking wounded return to full fitness and he has a full squad to select from we’ll get a run going and be celebrating many more last-minute winners than we concede.
For most of my working life I commuted from Luton to various NHS hospitals, community bases in Northwest London. I considered a 30 mile journey a long drive. But it kept a roof over my family’s head and food on the table.
So, on Sunday evening I’m enjoying Andy Burrows’ interview with Tolu Ikuyinminu on the Talk of the Town podcast when I hear Tolu tell Andy he “commutes” to and from Leicester to Creasey Park, on Tuesdays when there’s a match, Thursdays for training and again on Saturday for matches. I could barely contain my amazement and emotions that a player of Tolu’s calibre chooses to drive at least twice the distance I used to do, up to three times a week just so that he can play for Dunstable Town FC. If that is not the personification of commitment and devotion, then ladies and gentlemen I’m at a loss to tell you what is.
A reminder, not that I suspect one is needed, that on Sunday 4th December we play Tring Athletic in the 3rd round of the Isuzu FA Vase. Mark from Farmhouse Catering will be back with more delicious pies, mash and gravy and discounts for DTFC owners (so please remember to show him your valid Blue Card)
Be loud, be proud both tonight and on Sunday. Please be respectful towards our opponents and their supporters. Let’s get behind Joe & the boys at both games and get people talking about Dunstable Town for all the right reasons and into the next rounds of both competitions.
Thank you as always for your tremendous support.
AFC Dunstable started life as Old Dunstablians Football Club in 1981. The name Old Dunstablians originated from an organisation for old boys from Dunstable Grammar School.
The club started in the Dunstable Alliance Football League for a couple of seasons then moved onto the Luton District and South Bedfordshire League in 1983. Still playing at Manshead School with the 1st team and reserves, success was limited with the 1st team runners up twice in Division One and runners up in the William Pease Cup. While in the Luton League though the 1st team did land the Bedfordshire Junior Cup beating Leighton Athletic on penalties in 1989/90 season.
With the club using Dunstable Town Cricket Club as their social base in Bull Pond Lane, the cricket club was looking to move to a larger site in Totternhoe and when the new club was opened in 1994, a football pitch was accommodated, so the football club moved there from Manshead School.
An improvement in facilities gave the club a chance to apply to join the South Midlands League in 1995. Accepted into Division One the club struggled, as they flirted with being relegated straight back to the Luton League in the first 2 seasons. Going through new managers every season, they finally started to gain some consolidation and in season 2001/02 the team finished4th in the league and won the Division One Cup. The following season they just missed out of the title, which was now named Division Two. They finally clinched the title the next season and were runners
up in the Division Two Cup. Ground Grading issues were starting to stop the team progressing as two ground sharing agreements were declined.
This was now the start of a trophy laden period, as the Division Two title again was secured and back-to-back Bedfordshire Senior Trophy’s. Added to that, the Division Two Cup was won.
In 2003/04 the club decided to launch its youth policy and when the Under 15’s were runners up in the Chiltern Youth League, it started on the path to work its way through the FA Charter Standard. They achieved Adult status in 2003/04. The club then made the decision to change its name to AFC Dunstable so not to get confused with the local rugby club, as the club started to grow, and the name was more associated to a football club. The youth setup was awarded the Charter Standard in 2005/06. The next big step was to become a Development Club and a great deal of work saw the club achieve this in 2007. Next up was a goal to become a FA Charter Standard Community Club and 2008 saw the club achieve this. In that time the club has been awarded the Development Club Of The Year in 2008 and the Community Club Of The Year in 2009.
The Bedfordshire Football Association approached the club to become partners in the new Creasey Park Community Football Centre in 2008 and this gave them the chance to move the 1st team to Creasey Park and apply for promotion to Division One for the start of the 2009/10 season, which was accepted. The team finished a very creditable 5th in its first season at the higher level.
History was made in the 2010/11 season, as the team was accepted to participate in the FA Vase. A fine run through to the 2nd Round Proper was achieved. Looking to improve on the league position the previous season, the team went all out for promotion and finished runners up in the league and gained promotion to the Premier Division at their 2nd attempt, also winning the SSMFL Division One Cup.
Now with the team in the SSMFL Premier Division and entered in the FA Cup for the 2011/12 season, they finished 3rd in the league. In the 2012/13 season the team consolidated in the Premier Division and finished a respectable 8th. Their run in the FA Cup saw them get through 3 rounds eventually going out to Northwood after a replay.
The team were being managed by the most successful pair in the club’s history; Alex Butler and Dermot Butler, but they decided to step down after 9 years at the helm halfway through 2013/14 season. This left the team in disarray, which saw many stalwarts of the team leave. The club decided to appoint current manager Steve Heath and the club went on a rebuilding exercise.
2014/15 saw the team secure 3rd place in the SSMFL Premier Division as they
challenged for the title all season. They also equalled their best run in the FA Vase getting to the 3rd Round proper.
2015/16 was the season that the team broke all club records. Before clinching the SSMFL Premier Division title, they progressed through 2 rounds of the FA Cup before finally going out to Ryman Premier leaders at the time Leiston 1-0 in the 1st Qualifying Round. The FA Vase was a great ride as the team made it to the 4th Round proper. Unfortunately, they drew phoenix club Salisbury who had competed in the Conference Premier only two seasons previous. The league campaign was a great ride. As the season reached October, only 5 points separated the top 6. By Christmas it looked like London Colney were starting to break away, going 5 points clear. The chasing pack were bunching up behind as only 6 points was the difference between 2nd and 7th. When the team lost to a lastminute penalty to Biggleswade United on January 2nd, they went 8 points behind London Colney, and it looked like the title ambitions had faded. That would be the last time AFC lost in the league. With 7 games left, the team went top of the league and eventually won the league by 13 points.
The 2016/17 season saw them compete in the Southern League Central Division. They competed nearly all season in a playoff place but just missed out by 3 points. The team though did pick up some silverware winning the prestigious Bedfordshire Senior Cup 2-0 against Dunstable Town at Kenilworth Road. At the beginning of this season, the Bedfordshire Premier Cup was also won.
After only their 2nd season at step 4, 2017/18 saw them top the table at the start of the season. They occupied a play-off place all season, which in the end saw them finish5th. A 2-0 loss in North Hampshire against Hartley Wintney ended the season. 2018/19 season was probably the most challenging as they stuttered at the start of the season. At Christmas they were flirting with relegation but turned the corner and went on a decent run that saw them looking at an outside chance of a play-off spot, but they fell away and finished 10th.
Following the disrupted 2019/20 and 2020/21 seasons the 2021/22 season proved to be another record-breaking one for the OD’s. Progressing the furthest they ever had in the FA Cup; AFC were knocked-out at home by step 3 Peterborough Sports in the 3rd qualifying round. The cup run was accompanied by an excellent performance in the league. Finishing 3rd in the table, the OD’s hosted Ware FC in the play-off semi-final but lost on penalties after the match had finished goalless.

The scoreline didn’t do justice to the Blues performance. In control for long periods and “cruising” particularly once Danny Webb’s second goal for the Club in the 70th minute, many in the crowd were looking forward to a celebratory drink in the bar with the players and coaching staff after the final whistle.
That all changed with the dismissal of Robbie Goodman who handled on the line trying to block a goalbound shot. Ball to hand or hand to ball, doesn’t make an iota of difference these days. Video evidence suggests Robbie was facing the net and had his back to the shot, but referees have decisions to make in milliseconds and Dunstable offered no protests. Robbie received a red card and to add insult to injury Finbar King converted the resulting penalty.
As happened at Tring seven days earlier, Dunstable had a hand in their own version of a Greek Tragedy when David Parkinson fired home in the 95th minute to spoil Dunstable’s day. Make no mistake it was an excellent finish which left Coulson with no chance.
Saturday’s performance wasn’t one of those days, and this isn’t one of those reports. Dunstable didn’t get what they deserved. Man to man they were on their game from the first whistle.
Alfie Osborne returned from suspension to wear the One Love armband. Well done to Vice Chair, Matt Carrington for arranging everything and showing the Club’s support for the LGBTQ+ community and solidarity with England, and other European nations, who were forbidden from wearing identical
armbands at the World Cup.
Physio Adam Ashton is busy treating the DTFC walking wounded. Alfie’s position at Centre Half was a sign that the list of players still out had not get any shorter.
Tolu & Ruari just seem to get better and better every game in unfamiliar but certainly becoming more accustomed full back positions. The midfield engine room drove the team on all afternoon.
Luke Dunstan, Harry Beaumont and Joe Sellers-West immense all afternoon. Up front, Kyle Faulkner, Danny Webb and James Verney all started. The run of bad luck with injuries continued though as both Faulkner & Verney needed to be substituted due to injury.
Dunstable finally got the goal they deserved with a downward header from Alfie Osborne on 30 minutes. Harry Beaumont’s perfectly flighted corner finding Alfie, unmarked, and 8 yards out, who headed the ball down so the bounce beat the keeper and went in off the underside of the bar.
Potton were not without attacking endeavour of their own and may have done better from close range on a couple of occasions, with the Blues being grateful for the crossbar on another occasion and the agility of Connor Coulson getting down low to keep out a free kick on another.
The second goal arrived on 70 minutes. Connor Coulson kicked long and Webb found himself one on one with the keeper. Danny’s lob was perfectly executed and with Dunstable doubling their lead all looked good until Potton’s two late goals and a share of the points.
Dunstable Town Lions 5-2 Flitwick Golds
The management team adopted a new 1-4-4-1 formation with the aim of being robust to the counter attack and to deny Gold’s speedy wingers time and space.
This system also gave the opportunity to Dean to thread the ball between the lines and screen in-behind the strikers.
Town have conceded the first goal too often and this was a system to prevent that, to allow Town to grow in to the game and not be chasing the game early on. Three minutes in and was going to plan. Josh ran on to a through ball and put it between the keepers’ legs.
Town looked solid, but could not keep the Eagles out and on 14 minutes the game was all square.
Town’s response was immediate. Josh powerfully fired one in on the keeper, who could only palm it out. Scott pounced on the loose ball, bravely slide in, and converted the chance.
Six minutes later and Town added a third. Town had practiced corners in midweek and following a rehearsed set piece, Darren found himself on the back post to head Town into a comfortable half time lead.
Eleven minutes in and the team had not quite adjusted to the changes and Eagles pulled one back.
The tension did not last long and Town quickly restored the two-goal cushion. Deano’s sidewinder had the keeper beaten all ends up. It was a fantastic volley.
Four minutes from time George added the fifth. Darren’s clipped cross to the penalty spot was headed about by the Eagles’ defence and George leapt highest to head home.
As the red night sky blazed and with chants of “can we play you every week” ringing around the ground the referee brought a consummate Town performance to a end.

With the break for the FIFA World Cup, it is a good opportunity to take a look at the current standings in our FPL table.
Since our last update there has been quite a few changes in the table with Higgos Heroes leaping from 8th to 1st, pushing the Crilley’s into 2nd and 3rd. Dropping like a stone are the Rebels Wivoutta Clue, who have fallen from 11th to 20th.
Gameweek 17 is on Boxing Day, so there is enough time to make adjustments to your squad for the festive restart.

The Bedfordshire Senior Challenge Cup, also known as the Beds Senior Cup is the county cup of the Bedfordshire County FA. The current holders are Leighton Town who won the competition in a penalty shoot-out following a 2-2 draw, after Bedford Town scored a 97th minute equaliser.
The Senior Challenge Cup was first contested during the 1894-95 season and the final tie was won by Luton Montrose in a fiery match against Dunstable Town. Dunstable Town were 3-0 up after 20 minutes, when Montrose started to get a little physical. Dunstable’s outside-left Beasley left the field to be treated for a broken arm, leaving them down to 10 men for the remainder of the match. Montrose scored before half time and went on to win the game 3-4.
Dunstable Town won the first of 12 finals the following season but had to wait over 60 years before their second victory in 1957. Their most successful period was the 1980s with 6 wins, winning four on the spin from 1986.
This century the Blues have had three Senior Cup final wins. A 1-0 victory over Isthmian Premier League side Bedford Town secured the trophy in 2002-03, who played two leagues above the Blues at the time.
Two more victories against the Biggleswade teams in the final saw Dunstable’s last cup final wins. Biggleswade United were beaten 2-0 in the 2006-07 final with goals from Ross Hanley and Chris Marsh. Their last win was in the final for the 2008-09 season
which saw the Blues secure the cup for the twelfth time on penalties against Biggleswade Town. After 90 minutes and extra time the two teams were locked at 1-1 with Dunstable having 10 men following a red card for Michael Toner and Nick Nolan’s goal.

Coventry is a city in the West Midlands, located on the River Sherbourne. Formerly part of Warwickshire until 1451, it is the second largest city in the West Midlands region, after Birmingham. The city is part of a larger conurbation known as the Coventry and Bedworth Urban Area. Coventry suffered extensive bomb damage during the second World War. The most severe was a massive Luftwaffe air raid on 14 November 1940 which carried on for 10 hours until the following morning. This led to severe damage to large areas of the city centre and to the historic cathedral. More than 4,000 houses were damaged or destroyed along with three quarters of the city’s industrial plants. Hundreds were killed with thousands injured and homeless. The poet Philip Larkin was born and brought up in Coventry, where his father was the City Treasurer. The football club was founded in 2013 by Chairman Jason Kay along with Jason
Timms,
In 2015, the club announced the takeover of Coventry City Ladies FC, rebranding as Coventry United Ladies FC. The club home kit matches the civic colours of the city, dark red and green. A Wednesday jaunt to the West Midlands was facilitated by the offer of a lift (much appreciated Phil). The journey via the M25 and M1 was decent, and we arrived at the Butts Park Arena around 15:15 and parked in the pay and display
car park adjacent to the ground. This allowed plenty of time to take photographs of the ground. We were able to gain access to the ground as Coventry United Ladies were holding a training session. Daylight photographs were secured as we toured the ground. With plenty of time before the match, we explored a couple of local refreshment options. Large Pizzas were enjoyed at the Railway Bar & Grill just a few hundred yards from the ground. This deceptively large bar was relatively busy and there were several screens showing the Spain v Costa Rica world cup match. Our second port of call was the wonderful Broomfield Tavern (only a stone’s throw from the ground but tucked away). At this establishment I enjoyed Goat’s Milk (3.8%) from Church End and Golden Ale (4.3%) from Pitchfork. Whilst in the Broomfield Tavern, it was good to chat with some regular Coventry United supporters. It was clear from the discussions that these folk have been through the mill a bit in recent years with the turbulent times at Coventry City, I sensed that Coventry United was their stability and the clearly enjoy this allegiance. We sat close to this group at the match and the banter throughout was excellent. The only covered accommodation for spectators at the ground is the rather
impressive, seated stand. The stand seats 3000 spectators and a good view of the pitch is afforded from all areas. There is a bar and a separate food area beneath the stand. The car park end of the ground is completely flat, although it is possible to stand here for the match. The opposite end is also flat and houses various refreshment facilities for the rugby club. The remaining side of the ground is out of bounds to spectators and houses the respective benches. This was a very one-sided match throughout. The hosts dominated visitors Desborough Town and displayed some excellent passing and movement. the only real surprise was that there was only one goal scored in the first half. This imbalance was rectified early in the second period, and we were treated to the Hawaii five o theme tune when the fifth goal went in! However, it was Desborough Town that completed the scoring with almost the last kick when Luca miller chipped the keeper. For the record, the scorers for Coventry United were Kyle Carey, Adam Miles, Samir Muzaffar, Renato Prifti and Sean Wills.

From A1 Biggleswade roundabout (Sainsburys). Go over the river bridge. At the next mini roundabout take the first left into Sun Street, then next left into Fairfield Road. Proceed to the end of the road and into the Lane. Ground is at the end of the lane.
There are a couple of routes to this game. After getting to Bedford station via Luton on the train, a 30-minute bus ride on the 74 to Hitchin will drop you within a 10-minute walk of the ground.
Alternatively, a train from Hitchin will get you to Biggleswade station, which is approximately a mile from the ground, giving you ample opportunity to visit the pubs below.
There are several pubs on the High Street including Wetherspoons Crown Hotel, a converted coaching inn, the White Hart, purported to be the oldest pub in town, and the oak beamed Golden Pheasant. Any or all, are worth the trip.
